Challenging exclusive top quark pair production at low and high luminosity LHC

The elastic production of top quark pairs in $pp$ collisions at low and high luminosity regimes is investigated in detail. We extend the study performed in Phys. Rev. D102, 074014 (2020) which has demonstrated that the sum of two semi-exclusive $t\bar{t}$ production modes, namely in photon-Pomeron and Pomeron-Pomeron interactions, can be experimentally measured when the $t\bar{t}$ system decays semi-leptonically, $t\bar{t}\rightarrow jjblν_l\bar{b}$, both forward protons are tagged and a low amount of pile-up is present. In this study we focus on separating individual channels and a special attention is paid to the situation at high-luminosity LHC environment. We observe that the separation of the pomeron-pomeron and photon-photon events is a challenging task, especially at high amounts of pile-up even with an optimistic 10~ps resolution of timing detectors. In contrast, the photon-Pomeron signal is relatively well separable from all backgrounds at low levels of pile-up, allowing us to discover the elastic $t\bar{t}$ production and probe, for the first time, the production of a top quark pair in the photon-Pomeron interactions. The diffractive photoproduction of such a complex system as the $t\bar{t}$ pair hence can be used not only to study diffractive properties of the scattering amplitude but also to search for new physics beyond the Standard Model, and consequently to be a solid part of the physics programme of forward proton detectors at LHC.

Exclusive processes in $ep$ collisions at the EIC and LHeC: A closer look on the predictions of saturation models

The exclusive production of vector mesons and photons in $ep$ collisions is investigated considering three phenomenological saturation models based on distinct assumptions for the treatment of the dipole - hadron scattering amplitude. The latest high precision HERA data for the reduced and vector meson cross sections are used to update the saturation model proposed by Marquet - Peschanski - Soyez (MPS), which predicts that the saturation model is dependent of the squared momentum transfer $t$. The MPS predictions for the photon virtuality, energy and $t$ - dependencies of the exclusive $ρ$, $J/Ψ$ and DVCS cross sections are presented and a detailed comparison with the results derived using the impact parameter saturation models is performed. Our results indicate that a future experimental analysis of the $t$ - distribution $dσ/dt$ for exclusive processes in the kinematical range that will covered by the EIC and LHeC, considering the distinct photon polarizations and large values of $t$, will be able to discriminate between the distinct approaches for the QCD dynamics at high energies.

Impact of slow conversions on hybrid stars with sequential QCD phase transitions

In this paper, we investigate the impact of the phase conversion speed on the properties of hybrid stars with sequential sharp QCD phase transitions. We consider that these hybrid stars possess an inner (outer) core of CFL (2SC) quark matter surrounded by hadronic matter. Assuming that the phase conversions can be slow or rapid, we analyze the dynamical stability of these objects. In particular, we present our predictions for the mass-radius profile and the fundamental eigenfrequencies of hybrid stars with sequential QCD first order phase transitions. Our results demonstrate that the usual stability criteria i.e. $\partial M/ \partial P_0 \geq 0$, is sufficient only if both conversions are rapid. Moreover, we show that if any of the interfaces has a slow conversion speed, the fundamental eigenfrequencies are significantly modified.

Kaon production in high multiplicity events at the LHC

The production of the $K_S^0$ meson in high multiplicity $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV is investigated considering the hybrid formalism and the solution of the running coupling Balitsky - Kovchegov equation. The associated cross section is estimated and compared with the experimental data for the transverse momentum spectrum. Moreover, we analyze the self-normalized yields of $K_S^0$ mesons as a function of the multiplicity of coproduced charged hadrons and demonstrate that a steep increasing is theoretically predicted. A comparison with the ALICE data is presented considering two distinct solutions of the BK equation.

The Forward Physics Facility: Sites, Experiments, and Physics Potential

The Forward Physics Facility (FPF) is a proposal to create a cavern with the space and infrastructure to support a suite of far-forward experiments at the Large Hadron Collider during the High Luminosity era. Located along the beam collision axis and shielded from the interaction point by at least 100 m of concrete and rock, the FPF will house experiments that will detect particles outside the acceptance of the existing large LHC experiments and will observe rare and exotic processes in an extremely low-background environment. In this work, we summarize the current status of plans for the FPF, including recent progress in civil engineering in identifying promising sites for the FPF and the experiments currently envisioned to realize the FPF's physics potential. We then review the many Standard Model and new physics topics that will be advanced by the FPF, including searches for long-lived particles, probes of dark matter and dark sectors, high-statistics studies of TeV neutrinos of all three flavors, aspects of perturbative and non-perturbative QCD, and high-energy astroparticle physics.

Impact of intrinsic charm amount in the nucleon and saturation effects on the prompt atmospheric $ν_μ$ flux for IceCube

The predictions for the atmospheric neutrino flux at high energies strongly depend on the contribution of prompt neutrinos, which are determined by the production of charmed meson in the atmosphere at very forward rapidities. In this paper we estimate the related cross sections taking into account the presence of an intrinsic charm (IC) component in the proton wave function and the QCD dynamics modified by the onset of saturation effects. The impact on the predictions for the prompt neutrino flux is investigated assuming different values for the probability to find the IC in the nucleon. Comparison with the IceCube data is performed and conclusions are drawn.

Isolated photon production and pion-photon correlations in high-energy $pp$ and $pA$ collisions

A phenomenological study of the isolated photon production in high energy $pp$ and $pA$ collisions at RHIC and LHC energies is performed. Using the color dipole approach we investigate the production cross section differential in the transverse momentum of the photon considering three different phenomenological models for the universal dipole cross section. We also present the predictions for the rapidity dependence of the ratio of $pA$ to $pp$ cross sections. As a further test of the formalism, for different energies and photon rapidites we analyse the correlation function in azimuthal angle $Δϕ$ between the photon and a forward pion. The characteristic double-peak structure of the correlation function around $Δϕ\simeq π$ observed previously for Drell-Yan pair production is found for isolated photon emitted into the forward rapidity region which can be tested by future experiments.

New opportunities at the photon energy frontier

Ultra-peripheral collisions (UPCs) involving heavy ions and protons are the energy frontier for photon-mediated interactions. UPC photons can be used for many purposes, including probing low-$x$ gluons via photoproduction of dijets and vector mesons, probes of beyond-standard-model processes, such as those enabled by light-by-light scattering, and studies of two-photon production of the Higgs.

Probing hidden-bottom pentaquarks in fixed-target collisions at the LHC

In this paper we investigate the possibility of searching for the hidden-bottom pentaquark states in photon-induced interactions at the LHC. We consider the presence of the $P_b$ resonance in the $s$-channel of the $γp \rightarrow Υp$ reaction and estimate its contribution for the exclusive $Υ$ photoproduction in the fixed-target mode of the LHC. Predictions for the total cross sections, rapidity and transverse momentum distributions are derived using the STARlight Monte Carlo considering $Pb-p$, $Pb-He$ and $Pb-Ar$ fixed-target collisions at the LHC. Our results indicate that the presence of the $P_b$ resonance implies an enhancement in the rapidity distribution in the kinematical range covered by the LHCb detector. We demonstrate that the $P_b$ contribution for the $Υ$ photoproduction becomes dominant if kinematical cuts are imposed on the rapidity and transverse momentum of the final state. These results indicate that an experimental analysis of the $Υ$ photoproduction in fixed-target collisions can provide complementary and independent checks of the existence of these states, and help to understand their underlying nature.

Drell-Yan process in $pA$ collisions: the exact treatment of coherence effects

In this work, we investigate production of Drell-Yan (DY) pairs in proton-nucleus collisions in kinematic regions where the corresponding coherence length does not exceed the nuclear radius, $R_A$, and the quantum coherence effects should be treated with a special care. The results for the nucleus-to-nucleon production ratio available in the literature so far are usually based on the assumption of a very long coherence length (LCL) $l_c\gg R_A$. Since the onset of coherence effects is controlled by the coherence length $l_c$, we estimated its magnitude in various kinematic regions of the DY process and found that the LCL approximation should not be used at small and medium c.m. collision energies ($\sqrt{s} \lesssim 200$ GeV) as well as at large dilepton invariant masses. In order to obtain realistic predictions, we computed for the first time the DY cross section using the generalised color dipole approach based on the rigorous Green function formalism, which naturally incorporates the color transparency and quantum coherence effects and hence allows to estimate the nuclear shadowing with no restrictions on the CL. In addition to the shadowing effect, we studied a complementary effect of initial state interactions (ISI) that causes an additional suppression at large values of the Feynman variable. Numerical results for the nuclear modification factor accounting for the ISI effect and the finite $l_c$ are compared to the data available from the fixed-target FNAL measurements and a good agreement has been found. Besides, we present new predictions for the nuclear suppression as a function of dilepton rapidity and invariant mass in the kinematic regions that can be probed by the RHIC collider as well as by the planned AFTER@LHC and LHCb fixed-target experiments.

Nuclear effects in Drell-Yan pair production in high-energy $pA$ collisions

The Drell-Yan (DY) process of dilepton pair production off nuclei is not affected by final state interactions, energy loss or absorption. A detailed phenomenological study of this process is thus convenient for investigation of the onset of initial-state effects in proton-nucleus ($pA$) collisions. In this paper, we present a comprehensive analysis of the DY process in $pA$ interactions at RHIC and LHC energies in the color dipole framework. We analyse several effects affecting the nuclear suppression, $R_{pA}<1$, of dilepton pairs, such as the saturation effects, restrictions imposed by energy conservation (the initial-state effective energy loss) and the gluon shadowing, as a function of the rapidity, invariant mass of dileptons and their transverse momenta $p_T$. In this analysis, we take into account besides the $γ^*$ also the $Z^0$ contribution to the production cross section, thus extending the predictions to large dilepton invariant masses. Besides the nuclear attenuation of produced dileptons at large energies and forward rapidities emerging due to the onset of shadowing effects, we predict a strong suppression at large $p_T$, dilepton invariant masses and Feynman $x_F$ caused by the Initial State Interaction effects in kinematic regions where no shadowing is expected. The manifestations of nuclear effects are investigated also in terms of the correlation function in azimuthal angle between the dilepton pair and a forward pion $Δϕ$ for different energies, dilepton rapidites and invariant dilepton masses. We predict that the characteristic double-peak structure of the correlation function around $Δϕ\simeq π$ arises for very forward pions and large-mass dilepton pairs.

Drell-Yan phenomenology in the color dipole picture revisited

An extensive phenomenological study of the Drell-Yan (DY) process in $pp$ collisions at various energies is performed in the color dipole framework. Besides previously studied $γ^*$ production we have also included the $Z^0$ contribution relevant at large dilepton invariant masses. We investigate the DY cross section differential in invariant mass, rapidity and transverse momentum of the dilepton pair in $pp$ collisions at RHIC and LHC. We consider three different phenomenological models for the dipole cross section and found a reasonable agreement with the available data. As a further test of the color dipole formalism, we also study the correlation function in azimuthal angle between the dilepton pair and a forward pion $Δϕ$ for different energies, dilepton rapidites and invariant masses. The characteristic double-peak structure of the correlation function around $Δϕ\simeq π$ found for very forward pions and low-mass dilepton pairs is sensitive to the saturation effects and can be tested by future DY measurements in $pp$ collisions.

On the Determination of Small x Shadowing Corrections at HERA

The recent $F_2$ data can be described using the DGLAP evolution equations with an appropriate choice of input distributions and the choice of the starting scale for the $Q^2$ evolution. We demonstrate in this paper that we cannot conclude that there are no significant shadowing corrections at HERA kinematic region using $F_2$ data only. In this paper we calculate the shadowing corrections to the longitudinal structure function $F_L(x,Q^2)$ and to the charm component of the proton structure function $F_2^c(x,Q^2)$ at HERA kinematic region using an eikonal approach. We demonstrate that the shadowing corrections to these observables are very large and that the charm production is strongly modified at small-$x$. Our results agree with the recent few H1 data.
