Charm associated production of the pseudoscalar Higgs boson $h''$ in the MCPM' at the LHC

We discuss charm associated production of the pseudoscalar Higgs boson $h''$ in the MCPM'. In our analysis we assume $m_{h''}$ = 95.4 GeV, which corresponds to an enhancement observed by the CMS collaboration in the $γγ$ channel. As discussed recently, the MCPM' is consistent with the CMS enhancement. In this model the $h''$ Higgs boson of this mass decays dominantly into $c \bar c$ jets. The cross section for the associated $h''$ production in $p p \to h'' c \bar c$ is found to be almost as big as that for the Drell-Yan (DY) $c \bar c \to h''$ production, much larger than that for two-gluon fusion $g g \to h''$. Since in the MCPM' the dominant $h''$ decay is into the $c \bar c$ channel we have to deal with the $p p \to c \bar c c \bar c$ process with $c$ and $\bar c$ jets. In addition to the signal processes, we have sizeable single parton scattering (SPS) and double parton scattering (DPS) nonresonant background. In our analysis we include diagrams of gluon-gluon fusion $g g \to h''$ which lead to the $c \bar c c \bar c$ final state. We discuss also the possible role of the reaction $p p \to h'' h''$. Assuming 100\% c and $\bar c$ jet tagging we discuss in detail how to improve the signal-to-background ratio. Our analysis shows promising resonance-like enhancements and relatively large cross sections in the $c \bar c c \bar c$ channel within the MCPM'. In an appendix we discuss the total cross section for $h''$ production at the LHC. We also compare distributions for the reactions $p p \to h'' X$ and $p p \to Z X$ with $h''$ and $Z$ decaying to $c\bar c$ and $μ^{+}μ^{-}$. We hope that the LHC collaborations will in the future perform the experimental studies corresponding to the theoretical studies discussed here.

Transition Form-Factor for $η_Q$ at NNLO in the strong coupling $α_s$ and with all-order $v^2$ resummation

In this work, we discuss both relativistic and perturbative QCD corrections to the transition form-factor ${\cal F}_{η_Q}{(t_1,t_2)}$ for the process $γ^*(q_1) γ^*(q_2) \leftrightarrow η_Q(P)$ with dependencies on the normalised photon virtualities $t_1=q_1^2/m_Q^2$ and $t_2=q_2^2/m_Q^2$, where $m_Q$ is the heavy quark mass. We resum a class of relativistic corrections to all orders in the relativistic parameter $\langle v^2 \rangle_{η_Q}$. In addition, we include perturbative QCD corrections up to Next-to-Next-to-Leading Order (NNLO) in the strong coupling constant $α_s$. This involves the computation of two-loop amplitudes with two off-shell photons. We explore three different phenomenological applications of our transition form-factors for the charmonium case. We first study the ratio $\vert {\cal F}_{η_c}{(t_1,0)} \vert/ \vert {\cal F}_{η_c}{(0,0)} \vert$ for the single space-like photon case and compare our results with the existing $η_c$ measurements from the BaBar collaboration. Secondly, we consider observables for the case of double space-like photons and discuss the impact of the different corrections. The NNLO corrections for this case are presented here for the first time in the literature. Finally, we revisit the decay width $Γ[η_c \rightarrow γγ]$ and compare it with the existing PDG value.

Exclusive emissions of polarized $ρ$ mesons at the EIC and the proton content at low $x$

We present a new study on helicity amplitudes and cross sections for the exclusive production of $ρ$ mesons at the EIC in high-energy factorization. In this framework the analytic expression of amplitudes takes the form of a convolution between an off-shell impact factor, depicting the ($γ^* \to ρ$) transition, and a nonperturbative density, known as Unintegrated Gluon Distribution (UGD) that encodes information about the proton structure at low $x$ and evolves according to the BFKL equation. We come out with an evidence that observables sensitive to the polarizations of the incoming virtual photon and of the emitted meson allow us to discriminate among different UGD models and to gather quantitative information on the proton content at high energies.

Hadron structure at small-x via unintegrated gluon densities

Inclusive as well as exclusive emissions in forward and central directions of rapidity are widely recognized as excellent channels to access the proton structure at small-x. In this regime, to describe nucleons structure, it is necessary to use kT-unintegrated distributions. In particular, at large transverse momenta, the x-evolution of the so-called unintegrated gluon distribution is driven by the Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov equation, within the framework of the high-energy factorization (HEF). Recent analyses on the diffractive electroproduction of ρmesons have corroborated the underlying assumption that the small-size dipole scattering mechanism is at work, thus validating the use of the HEF formalism. Nonetheless, a significant sensitivity of polarized cross sections to intermediate values of the meson transverse momenta, where, in the case of inclusive emissions, a description at the hand of the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization starts to be the most appropriate framework, has been observed. In this work, we will review the formal description of the UGD within the BFKL approach and present some UGD models that have been proposed, then we will describe the state of the art of some recent phenomenological analyses.

Impact of the LHCb $p\!+\!\!^{4}\!H\!e$ fixed-target $D^0/\bar{D^0}$ data on the intrinisic $c \bar c$ component in the nucleon

We discuss the impact of the new LHCb fixed-target $p\!+\!^{4}\!He$ data for $D^0/{\bar D}^0$ production on the intrinsic $c \bar c$ component in the nucleon wave function. Within the scenario presented here neither the traditional gluon-gluon fusion or quark-antiquark annihilation mechanisms calculated in the $k_T$-factorization approach nor their counterparts from the collinear next-to-leading order collinear framework are sufficient to describe the transverse momentum and rapidity distributions of $D^0/{\bar D}^0$ mesons. First the $c{\bar c}$-pair production within the standard frameworks is considered. Here a crucial role of the $c \to D$ hadronization effects at low energies and low transverse momenta is found and discussed, which was not analyzed in previous studies. A contribution related to intrinsic $c \bar c$ component in the nucleon wave function is included in addition. Two models of the symmetric ($c(x) = \bar c(x)$) intrinsic charm (IC) component are considered. The intrinsic charm $g^* c \to g c$ (or $g^* {\bar c} \to g {\bar c}$) contribution needs to be regularized in order to obtain a suppression of the minijet $p_{T}$ spectrum present in the phenomenological minijet model, commonly used in Monte Carlo generators. We show that in our model the regularization parameter can be obtained from the fit to the LHCb fixed-target data under consideration here. We discuss uncertainties of our calculations (scale, charm quark mass, fragmentation function) as well as set limits on the IC probability. According to our model the intrinsic charm probability $P_{IC} = 1.65\%$ allows to significantly improve description of the LHCb data but the number is rather uncertain.

Soft-photon radiation in high-energy proton-proton collisions within the tensor-Pomeron approach: Bremsstrahlung

We discuss diffractive processes in proton-proton collisions at small momentum transfers without and with photon radiation. We consider the soft exclusive reactions $pp \to pp$, $p\bar{p} \to p\bar{p}$, and $pp \to pp γ$ within the tensor-pomeron and vector-odderon approach. We compare our results with the data for $pp$ and $p\bar{p}$ total cross sections, for the ratio of real to imaginary part of the forward scattering amplitude, and for the elastic $pp$ cross sections, especially those from TOTEM. To describe the low-energy data more accurately the secondary reggeons must be included. We write down the amplitudes for the photon bremsstrahlung in high-energy proton-proton collisions using the tensor-pomeron model. These results are relevant for the c.m. energies presently available at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and at the LHC. We present predictions for the proposed measurements of soft photons with the planned future upgrade of the ALICE experiment at the LHC. We investigate the limits of applicability of the soft-photon approximation (SPA) based on Low's theorem. The corresponding SPA results are compared to those obtained from our complete model. The regions of phase space are given quantitatively where SPA and our complete tensor-pomeron results are close to each other. As an example, let $k_{\perp}$, $\rm y$, and $ω$, be the absolute value of the transverse momentum, the rapidity, and the energy of the photon, respectively, in the overall c.m. system. For the region $1 \; {\rm MeV} < k_{\perp} < 100 \; {\rm MeV}$ and $3.5 < |\rm y| < 5.0$, we find that the SPA Ansatz with only the pole terms $\propto ω^{-1}$ agrees at the percent level with our complete model result up to $ω\cong 2$ GeV.

The Forward Physics Facility: Sites, Experiments, and Physics Potential

The Forward Physics Facility (FPF) is a proposal to create a cavern with the space and infrastructure to support a suite of far-forward experiments at the Large Hadron Collider during the High Luminosity era. Located along the beam collision axis and shielded from the interaction point by at least 100 m of concrete and rock, the FPF will house experiments that will detect particles outside the acceptance of the existing large LHC experiments and will observe rare and exotic processes in an extremely low-background environment. In this work, we summarize the current status of plans for the FPF, including recent progress in civil engineering in identifying promising sites for the FPF and the experiments currently envisioned to realize the FPF's physics potential. We then review the many Standard Model and new physics topics that will be advanced by the FPF, including searches for long-lived particles, probes of dark matter and dark sectors, high-statistics studies of TeV neutrinos of all three flavors, aspects of perturbative and non-perturbative QCD, and high-energy astroparticle physics.

Impact of intrinsic charm amount in the nucleon and saturation effects on the prompt atmospheric $ν_μ$ flux for IceCube

The predictions for the atmospheric neutrino flux at high energies strongly depend on the contribution of prompt neutrinos, which are determined by the production of charmed meson in the atmosphere at very forward rapidities. In this paper we estimate the related cross sections taking into account the presence of an intrinsic charm (IC) component in the proton wave function and the QCD dynamics modified by the onset of saturation effects. The impact on the predictions for the prompt neutrino flux is investigated assuming different values for the probability to find the IC in the nucleon. Comparison with the IceCube data is performed and conclusions are drawn.

Anomalous electromagnetic moments of $τ$ lepton in $γγ\to τ^+ τ^-$ reaction in Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC

We discuss the sensitivity of the $γγ\to τ^+ τ^-$ process in ultraperipheral Pb+Pb collisions on the anomalous magnetic ($a_τ$) and electric ($d_τ$) moments of $τ$ lepton at LHC energies. We derive the corresponding cross sections by folding the elementary cross section with the heavy-ion photon fluxes and considering semi-leptonic decays of both $τ$ leptons in the fiducial volume of ATLAS and CMS detectors. We present predictions for total and differential cross sections, and for the ratios to $γγ\to e^+ e^- (μ^+ μ^-$) process. These ratios allow to cancel theoretical and experimental uncertainties when performing precision measurement of $a_τ$ at the LHC. The expected limits on $a_τ$ with existing Pb+Pb dataset are found to be better by a factor of two comparing to current best experimental limits and can be further improved by another factor of two at High Luminosity LHC.

Central exclusive production of scalar and pseudoscalar charmonia in the light-front $k_T$-factorization approach

We study exclusive production of scalar $χ_{c0}\equiv χ_c(0^{++})$ and pseudoscalar $η_c$ charmonia states in proton-proton collisions at the LHC energies. The amplitudes for $gg \to χ_{c0}$ as well as for $gg \to η_c$ mechanisms are derived in the $k_{T}$-factorization approach. The $p p \to p p η_c$ reaction is discussed for the first time. We have calculated rapidity, transverse momentum distributions as well as such correlation observables as the distribution in relative azimuthal angle and $(t_1,t_2)$ distributions. The latter two observables are very different for $χ_{c0}$ and $η_c$ cases. In contrast to the inclusive production of these mesons considered very recently in the literature, in the exclusive case the cross section for $η_c$ is much lower than that for $χ_{c0}$ which is due to a special interplay of the corresponding vertices and off-diagonal UGDFs used to calculate the cross sections. We present the numerical results for the key observables in the framework of potential models for the light-front quarkonia wave functions. We also discuss how different are the absorptive corrections for both considered cases.

Centrality dependence of dilepton production via $γγ$ processes from Wigner distributions of photons in nuclei

We propose a new complete method, based on the Wigner distributions of photons, how to calculate differential distributions of dileptons created via photon-photon fusion in semicentral ($b<2R_A$) $AA$ collisions. The formalism is used to calculate different distributions of invariant mass, dilepton transverse momentum and acoplanarity for different regions of centrality. The results of calculation are compared with recent STAR, ALICE and ATLAS experimental data. Very good agreement with the data is achieved without free parameters and without including additional mechanisms such as a possible rescattering of leptons in the quark-gluon plasma.

From transition electromagnetic form factors $γ^* γ^* η_c(1S,2S)$ to the production of $η_c(1S,2S)$ at the LHC

We review our recent results for production of $η_c(1S)$ and $η_c(2S)$ in the $γ^* γ^* \to η_c(1S,2S)$ fusion and in proton-proton collisions via gluon-gluon fusion. The quarkonium wave functions are calculated by solving Schrödinger equation for different $c \bar c$ potentials. Using Terentev prescription the light-cone wave functions are obtained. The light-cone wave functions are used then to calculate $γ^* γ^* \to η_c$ transition form factors. The theoretical results are compared to the Belle experimental data for $η_c(1S)$. In addition we discuss our results for two-photon decay width. We present also results of our calculations for proton-proton collisions obtained within $k_T$-factorization approach for different unintegrated gluon distributions. The results for hadroproduction of $η_c(1S)$ are compared to the LHCb experimental data.

Hadroproduction of scalar $P$-wave quarkonia in the light-front $k_T$-factorization approach

In this work, we present a thorough analysis of scalar $P$-wave $χ_{Q0}$, $Q=c,b$ quarkonia electromagnetic form factors for the $γ^* γ^* \to χ_{Q0}$ couplings, as well as their hadroproduction observables in $k_\perp$-factorisation using the light-front potential approach for the quarkonium wave function. The electromagnetic form factors are presented as functions of photon virtualities. We discuss the role of the Melosh spin-rotation and relativistic corrections estimated by comparing our results with those in the standard nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) approach. Theoretical uncertainties of our approach are found by performing the analysis with two different unintegrated gluon densities and with five distinct models of the $Q\bar Q$ interaction potentials consistent with the meson spectra. The results for the rapidity and transverse momentum distributions of $χ_{Q0}$ produced in high-energy $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13 \, \rm{TeV}$ are shown.

Local energy-momentum conservation and initial conditions for quark-gluon plasma evolution in nucleus-nucleus collisions at SPS and RHIC BES energies

We investigate consequences of local energy-momentum conservation for initial eccentricity coefficients in heavy ion collisions at not too high energies relevant for CERN SPS and RHIC BES. Different models of energy density available for pion production are considered. We study dependence of eccentricity coefficients on space-time rapidity for different impact parameters. The naive formula how to define eccentricities breaks with our initial conditions and must be corrected. We predict considerable eccentricities for $ε_{1,2,3,4}$ and specific dependence on space-time rapidity as well as on impact parameter for lower energies. The effect becomes smaller at larger energies when restricting to narrow rapidity interval arround zero. Our predictions are in principle input for further hydrodynamical evolution but it is not clear whether they can be easily used. Our initial condition suggest a strong preequilibrium phase which is difficult for modelling.

Ultra-peripheral collisions (UPCs) involving heavy ions and protons are the energy frontier for photon-mediated interactions. UPC photons can be used for many purposes, including probing low-$x$ gluons via photoproduction of dijets and vector mesons, probes of beyond-standard-model processes, such as those enabled by light-by-light scattering, and studies of two-photon production of the Higgs.

Production of $f_{0}(980)$ meson at the LHC: Color evaporation versus color-singlet gluon-gluon fusion

The production of the $f_{0}(980)$ meson at high energies is not well understood. We investigate two different potential mechanisms for inclusive scalar meson production in the $k_t$-factorization approach: color-singlet gluon-gluon fusion and color evaporation model. The $γ^* γ^* \to f_0(980)$ form factor(s) can be constraint from the $f_0(980)$ radiative decay width. The $g^* g^* \to f_0(980)$ form factors are obtained by a replacement of $α_{\rm{em}}$ electromagnetic coupling constant by $α_{\rm{s}}$ strong coupling constant and appropriate color factors. The form factors for the two couplings are parametrized with a function motivated by recent results for scalar quarkonia. The differential cross sections are calculated in the $k_t$-factorization approach with modern unintegrated gluon distributions. Unlike for quarkonia it seems rather difficult to describe a preliminary ALICE data for inclusive production of $f_0(980)$ exclusively by the color singlet gluon-gluon fusion mechanism. Two different scenarios for flavor structure of $f_0(980)$ are considered in this context. We consider also mechanism of fusion of quark-antiquark associated with soft gluon emission in a phenomenological color evaporation model (CEM) used sometimes for quarkonium production. Here we use $k_t$-factorization version of CEM to include higher-order contributions. In addition, for comparison we consider also NLO collinear approach with $q \bar{q} q$ and $q \bar{q} g$ color octet partonic final states. Both approaches lead to a similar result. However, very large probabilities are required to describe the preliminary ALICE data. The pomeron-pomeron fusion mechanism is also discussed and results are quantified.

Production of axial-vector mesons at $e^+ e^-$ collisions with double-tagging as a way to constrain the axial meson LbL contribution to muon g-2 and/or hyperfine splitting of muonic hydrogen

We calculate cross sections for production of axial-vector $f_1(1285)$ mesons for double-tagged measurements of the $e^+ e^- \to e^+ e^- f_1(1285)$ reaction. Different $γ^* γ^* \to f_1(1285)$ vertices from the literature are used. Both integrated cross section as well as differential distributions are calculated. Predictions for a potential measurement at Belle II are presented. Quite different results are obtained for the different vertices proposed in the literature. Future measurements at $e^+ e^-$ colliders could test and/or constrain the $γ^* γ^* \to f_1 (a_1, f_1')$ vertices and associated form factors, known to be important ingredients for calculating contributions to anomalous magnetic moment of muon and hyperfine splitting of levels of muonic atoms.

Production of heavy particle pairs via photon-photon processes at the LHC

We discuss production of $W^+ W^-$ pairs and $t \bar t$ quark-antiquark pairs in proton-proton collisions induced by two-photon fusion including transverse momenta of incoming photons. The unintegrated inelastic fluxes (related to proton dissociation) of photons are calculated based on modern parametrizations of deep inelastic structure functions in a broad range of $x$ and $Q^2$. We focus on processes with single and double proton dissociation. Highly excited remnant systems hadronise producing particles that can be vetoed in the calorimeter. We calculate associated gap survival factors. The gap survival factors depend on the process, mass of the remnant system and collision energy. The rapidity gap survival factor due to remnant fragmentation for double dissociative (DD) collisions is smaller than that for single dissociative (SD) process. We observe approximate factorisation: $S_{R,DD} \approx S_{R,SD}^2$ when imposing rapidity veto. For the $W^+W^-$ final state, the remnant fragmentation leads to a taming of the cross section when the rapidity gap requirement is imposed. Also for $t \bar t$ quark-antiquark pairs such a condition reverses the hierarchy observed for the case when such condition is taken into account. Our results imply that for the production of such heavy objects as $t$ quark and $\bar t$ antiquark the virtuality of the photons attached to the dissociative system are very large ($Q^2 <$ 10$^{4}$ GeV$^2$). A similar effect is observed for the $W^+ W^-$ system.

Searching for the odderon in $pp \to pp K^{+}K^{-}$ and $pp \to pp μ^{+}μ^{-}$ reactions in the $ϕ(1020)$ resonance region at the LHC

We explore the possibility of observing odderon exchange in the $pp \to pp K^{+}K^{-}$ and $pp \to pp μ^{+}μ^{-}$ reactions at the LHC. We consider the central exclusive production (CEP) of the $ϕ(1020)$ resonance decaying into $K^{+} K^{-}$ and $μ^{+}μ^{-}$. We compare the purely diffractive contribution (odderon-pomeron fusion) to the photoproduction contribution (photon-pomeron fusion). The theoretical results are calculated within the tensor-pomeron and vector-odderon model for soft reactions. We include absorptive corrections at the amplitude level. In order to fix the coupling constants for the photon-pomeron fusion contribution we discuss the reactions $γp \to ωp$ and $γp \to ϕp$ including $ϕ$-$ω$ mixing. We compare our results for these reactions with the available data, especially those from HERA. Our coupling constants for the pomeron-odderon-$ϕ$ vertex are taken from an analysis of the WA102 data for the $p p \to p p ϕ$ reaction. We show that the odderon-exchange contribution significantly improves the description of the $pp$ azimuthal correlations and the $dP_{t}$ "glueball-filter variable" dependence of $ϕ$ CEP measured by WA102. To describe the low-energy data more accurately we consider also subleading processes with reggeized vector-meson exchanges. However, they do not play a significant role at the LHC. We present predictions for two possible types of measurements: at midrapidity and with forward measurement of protons (relevant for ATLAS-ALFA or CMS-TOTEM), and at forward rapidities and without measurement of protons (relevant for LHCb). We discuss the influence of experimental cuts on the integrated cross sections and on various differential distributions. With the corresponding LHC data one should be able to get a decisive answer concerning the presence of an odderon-pomeron fusion contribution in single $ϕ$ CEP.

Extracting the pomeron-pomeron-$f_{2}(1270)$ coupling in the $p p \to p p π^{+} π^{-}$ reaction through angular distributions of the pions

We discuss how to extract the pomeron-pomeron-$f_2(1270)$ ($\mathbb{P} \mathbb{P} f_2(1270)$) coupling within the tensor-pomeron model. The general $\mathbb{P} \mathbb{P} f_2(1270)$ coupling is a combination of seven basic couplings (tensorial structures). To study these tensorial structures we propose to measure the central-exclusive production of a $π^+ π^-$ pair in the invariant mass region of the $f_2(1270)$ meson. An analysis of angular distributions in the $π^+ π^-$ rest system, using the Collins-Soper (CS) and the Gottfried-Jackson (GJ) frames, turns out to be particularly relevant for our purpose. For both frames the $\cosθ_{π^{+}}$ and $ϕ_{π^{+}}$ distributions are discussed. We find that the azimuthal angle distributions in these frames are fairly sensitive to the choice of the $\mathbb{P} \mathbb{P} f_2$ coupling. We show results for the resonance case alone as well as when the dipion continuum is included. We show the influence of the experimental cuts on the angular distributions in the context of dedicated experimental studies at RHIC and LHC energies. Absorption corrections are included for our final distributions.

Independent quark/antiquark fragmentation to massive particles in proton-proton collisions

We critically discuss fragmentation of quark or antiquark to massive particles (mesons or baryons) in proton-proton collisions. Both heavy and light quark/antiquark fragmentations are discussed using universal $z$-dependent fragmentation functions. Different scenarios how to define the $z$ variable are considered: as a fraction of energy, momentum or light-cone momentum of the parent quark/antiquark. Also a choice of the direction of motion of hadron with respect to the parent parton must be made in the simplest approach. Energy and flavour violation is discussed for the region of small $p_t$ and/or center-of-mass $y \sim$ 0. Results of different approaches are compared. We show that at the LHC energies all schemes become consistent for $D$-meson transverse momenta larger than $2$ GeV. Relations to results from the literature are made. We present some examples for production of D mesons from light and charm quarks/antiquarks. Emission with respect to the direction of motion lowers the cross section of $D$ mesons at larger rapidities compared to the traditional approach ($y_D = y_{q/\bar q}$). As illustrated here the effect of using different prescriptions is particularly large at low energies (fixed target experiments).

Production asymmetry of $ν_τ$ neutrinos and ${\overline ν}_τ$ antineutrinos from a fixed target experiment SHiP

We discuss how to calculate cross sections as well as rapidity, transverse momentum and energy distributions of $ν_τ$ and ${\overline ν}_τ$ produced from the direct $D_s^{\pm} \to ν_τ/{\overline ν}_τ$ and chain $D_s^{\pm} \to τ^+/τ^- \to ν_τ/{\overline ν}_τ$ decays in $p\!+^{96}\!\mathrm{Mo}$ scattering with proton beam $E_{\mathrm{lab}}$ = 400 GeV \textit{i.e.} at $\sqrt{s}_{NN}$ = 27.4 GeV. The $τ$ decays are simulated with the help of the \textsc{Tauola} code and include multiple decay channels of $τ$ in amounts proportional to their branching ratios. In our calculations we include $D_s^{\pm}$ from charm fragmentation $c \to D_s^{+}$ and $\bar c \to D_s^-$ as well as those from subleading fragmentation of strange quarks/antiquarks $s \to D_s^-$ and $\bar s \to D_s^+$. The $s \ne \bar s$ asymmetry of the strange quark content of proton is included. The different contributions to $D_s^{\pm}$ and $ν_τ / {\overline ν}_τ$ are shown explicitly. We discuss and quantify a not discussed so far effect of asymmetries for production of $ν_τ$ and ${\overline ν}_τ$ caused by subleading fragmentation mechanism and discuss related uncertainties. A potential measurement of the asymmetry is discussed. Estimates of a number of observed $ν_τ / \overlineν_τ$ in the $ν_τ / \overlineν_τ +^{208}\!\mathrm{Pb}$ reaction, with 2m long target are given with the help of the NuWro program. We refer also to the production of the high-energy (anti)neutrinos in the atmosphere.

Prompt hadroproduction of $η_c(1S,2S)$ in the $k_T$-factorization approach

In this work, we present a thorough analysis of $η_c(1S,2S)$ quarkonia hadroproduction in $k_\perp$-factorisation in the framework of the light-front potential approach for the quarkonium wave function. The off-shell matrix elements for the $g^* g^* η_c(1S,2S)$ vertices are derived. We discuss the importance of taking into account the gluon virtualities. %We discuss the role of relativistic corrections, the Melosh spin-rotation and theoretical uncertainties by comparing our results with the standard NRQCD approach. We present the transverse momentum distributions of $η_c$ for several models of the unintegrated gluon distributions. Our calculations are performed for four distinct parameterisations for the $c\bar c$ interaction potential consistent with the meson spectra. We compare our results for $η_c(1S)$ to measurements by the LHCb collaboration and present predictions for $η_c(2S)$ production.

Semiexclusive production of vector mesons in proton-proton collisions with electromagnetic dissociation

We calculate distributions of different vector mesons in purely exclusive ($p p \to p p V$) and semi-exclusive ($p p \to p X V$) processes with electromagnetic dissociation of a proton. The cross section for the electromagnetic dissociation is expressed through electromagnetic structure functions of the proton. We include the transverse momentum distribution of initial photons in the associated flux. Contributions of the exclusive and semi-exclusive processes are compared for different vector mesons ($V = ϕ, J/ψ, Υ$). We discuss how the relative contribution of the semi-exclusive processes depends on the mass of the vector meson as well as on different kinematical variables of the vector meson ($y$, $p_t$). The ratio of semi-exclusive to exclusive contributions are shown and compared for different mesons in different variables.

Can the diphoton enhancement at 750 GeV be due to a neutral technipion?

We discuss a scenario in which the diphoton enhancement at $M_{γγ}$ = 750 GeV, observed by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations, is a neutral technipion $\tildeπ^0$. We consider two distinct minimal models for the dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking. In a first one, two-flavor vector-like technicolor (VTC) model, we assume that the two-photon fusion is a dominant production mechanism. We include $γγ\to {\tilde π}^0$ and production of technipion associated with one or two jets. All the considered mechanisms give similar contributions. With the strong Yukawa (technipion-techniquark) coupling $g_{TC}$ = 10 - 20 we obtain the measured cross section of the "signal". With such values of $g_{TC}$ we get a relatively small $Γ_{\rm tot}$. In a second approach, one-family walking technicolor (WTC) model, the isoscalar technipion is produced dominantly via the gluon-gluon fusion. We also discuss the size of the signal at lower energies (LHC, Tevatron) for $γγ$ (VTC) and jet-jet (WTC) final states and check consistency with the existing experimental data. We predict a measurable cross section for ${\tilde π}^0$ production associated with one or two soft jets. The technipion signal in both models is compared with the SM background diphoton contributions. We observe the dominance of inelastic-inelastic processes for $γγ$ induced processes. In the VTC scenario, we predict the signal cross section for purely exclusive $p p \to p p γγ$ processes at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV to be about 0.2 fb. Such a cross section would be, however, difficult to measure with the planned integrated luminosity. In all considered cases the signal is below the background or/and below the threshold set by statistics.

Can we obtain a "new femtoscopy" on the basis of electromagnetic effects?

We review our studies of spectator-induced electromagnetic (EM) effects on charged pion emission in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. These effects are found to consist in the electromagnetic {charge splitting} of pion directed flow as well as very large distortions in spectra and ratios of produced charged particles. As it emerges from our analysis, they offer sensitivity to the actual distance $d_E$ between the pion formation zone at freeze-out and the spectator matter. As a result, this gives a new possibility of studying the space-time evolution of dense and hot matter created in the course of the collision. Having established that $d_E$ traces the longitudinal evolution of the system and therefore rapidly decreases as a function of pion rapidity, we investigate the latter finding in view of pion feed-over from intermediate resonance production. As a result we obtain a first estimate of the pion decoupling time from EM effects which we compare to existing HBT data. We conclude that spectator-induced EM interactions can serve as a new tool for studying the space-time characteristics and longitudinal evolution of the system.

Central exclusive diffractive production of $π^{+}π^{-}$ continuum, scalar and tensor resonances in $pp$ and $p \bar{p}$ scattering within tensor pomeron approach

We consider central exclusive diffractive dipion production in the reactions $pp \to pp π^{+} π^{-}$ and $p\bar{p} \to p\bar{p} π^{+} π^{-}$ at high energies. We include the dipion continuum, the dominant scalar $f_{0}(500)$, $f_{0}(980)$, and tensor $f_{2}(1270)$ resonances decaying into the $π^{+} π^{-}$ pairs. The calculation is based on a tensor pomeron model and the amplitudes for the processes are formulated in terms of vertices respecting the standard crossing and charge-conjugation relations of Quantum Field Theory. The formulae for the dipion continuum and tensor meson production are given here for the first time. The theoretical results are compared with existing STAR, CDF, CMS experimental data and predictions for planned or being carried out experiments (ALICE, ATLAS) are presented. We show the influence of the experimental cuts on the integrated cross section and on various differential distributions for outgoing particles. Distributions in rapidities and transverse momenta of outgoing protons and pions as well as correlations in azimuthal angle between them are presented. We find that the relative contribution of resonant $f_2(1270)$ and dipion continuum strongly depends on the cut on proton transverse momenta or four-momentum transfer squared $t_{1,2}$ which may explain some controversial observations made by different ISR experiments in the past. The cuts may play then the role of a $ππ$ resonance filter. We suggest some experimental analyses to fix model parameters related to the pomeron-pomeron-$f_{2}$ coupling.

Charm quark and meson production in association with single-jet at the LHC

We discuss charm quark/antiquark and charmed meson production in association with one extra jet (gluon, quark, antiquark) at the LHC. The calculations are performed both in collinear and $k_T$-factorization approaches. Different unintegrated gluon distribution functions are used in the $k_T$-factorization approach. Several predictions for the LHC are presented. We show distributions in rapidity and transverse momenta of $c$/$\bar c$ (or charmed mesons) and the associated jet as well as some two-dimensional observables. Interesting correlation effects are predicted, \textit{e.g.} in azimuthal angles $φ_{c\bar{c}}$ and $φ_{c\mathrm{\textit{-jet}}}$. We have also discussed a relation of the $2 \to 2$ and $2 \to 3$ partonic calculations in the region of large transverse momenta of charm quarks/antiquarks as well as the similarity of the next-to-leading order collinear approach and the $k_T$-factorization approach with the KMR unintegrated parton distribution functions. Integrated cross sections for $D^{0}$ + jet production for ATLAS detector acceptance and for different cuts on jet transverse momenta are also presented.

Diffractive processes at the LHC within $k_t$ -factorization approach

We discuss the single diffractive production of $c \bar c$ pairs and charmed mesons at the LHC. In addition to standard collinear approach, for a first time we propose a $k_t$-factorization approach to the diffractive processes. The transverse momentum dependent (the unintegrated diffractive parton distributions) in proton are obtained with the help of the Kimber-Martin-Ryskin prescription where collinear diffractive PDFs are used as input. In this calculation the transverse momentum of the pomeron is neglected with respect to transverse momentum of partons entering the hard process. The results of the new approach are compared with those of the standard collinear one. Significantly larger cross sections are obtained in the $k_t$-factorization approach where some part of higher-order effects is effectively included. Some correlation observables, like azimuthal angle correlation between $c$ and $\bar c$, and $c \bar c$ pair transverse momentum distribution were obtained for the first time.

Diffractive production of heavy mesons at the LHC within $k_t$ - factorization approach

We discuss diffractive production of heavy mesons at the LHC. The differential cross sections for single- and central-diffractive mechanisms for $c\bar c$ pair production are calculated in the framework of the Ingelman-Schlein model corrected for absorption effects. Here, leading-order gluon-gluon fusion and quark-antiquark anihilation partonic subprocesses are taken into consideration. Both pomeron flux factors as well as parton distributions in the pomeron are taken from the H1 Collaboration analysis of diffractive structure function and diffractive dijets at HERA. The extra corrections from subleading reggeon exchanges are also taken into consideration. In addition to standard collinear approach, for the first time the differential cross sections for the diffractive $c\bar c$ pair production are calculated in the framework of the $k_t$-factorization approach, i.e. effectively including higher-order corrections. The unintegrated (transverse momentum dependent) diffractive parton distributions in proton are calculated with the help of the Kimber-Martin-Ryskin prescription where collinear diffractive PDFs are used as input. Some correlation observables, like azimuthal angle correlation between $c$ and $\bar c$, and $c \bar c$ pair transverse momentum were obtained for the first time. The hadronization of charm quarks is taken into account by means of fragmentation function technique.

Diphoton production in lead-lead and proton-proton UPC

We discuss diphoton semi(exclusive) production in ultraperipheral $PbPb$ collisions at energy of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 5.5 TeV (LHC). The nuclear calculations are based on equivalent photon approximation in the impact parameter space. The cross sections for elementary $γγ\to γγ$ subprocess are calculated including three different mechanisms: box diagrams with leptons and quarks in the loops, a VDM-Regge contribution with virtual intermediate hadronic excitations of the photons and the two-gluon exchange contribution (formally three-loops) to elastic photon-photon scattering in the high-energy approximation. We got relatively high cross sections in $PbPb$ collisions ($306$ nb). This opens a possibility to study the $γγ\to γγ$ (quasi)elastic scattering at the LHC. We find that the cross section for elastic $γγ$ scattering could be measured in the lead-lead collisions for the diphoton invariant mass up to $W_{γγ} \approx 15-20$ GeV. We identify region(s) of phase space where the two-gluon exchange contribution becomes important ingredient compared to box and nonperturbative VDM-Regge mechanisms. We perform a similar analysis for the $pp \to ppγγ$ reaction at energy of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=7$ and $100$ TeV.

Double scattering production of two positron-electron pairs in ultraperipheral heavy-ion collisions

We present first measurable predictions for electromagnetic (two-photon) double scattering production of two positron-electron pairs in ultraperipheral heavy-ion collisions at LHC. Measureable cross sections are obtained with realistic cuts on electron/positron (pseudo)rapidities and transverse momenta for the ALICE and ATLAS or CMS experiments. The predictions for total and differential cross sections are presented. We show also two-dimensional distributions in rapidities of the opposite-sign (from the same or different subcollisions) and of the same-sign ($e^+ e^+$ or $e^- e^-$) electrons and in rapidity distance between them. Expected number of events are presented and discussed. Our calculations strongly suggest that relevant measurements with the help of ATLAS, CMS and ALICE detectors are possible in a near future.

Double-parton scattering effects in double charm production within gluon fragmentation scenario

We discuss charm $D^0 D^0$ meson-meson pair production in the forward rapidity region related to the LHCb experimental studies at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV. We consider double-parton scattering mechanisms of double $c \bar c$ production and subsequent standard $cc \to D^{0}D^{0}$ scale-independent hadronization as well as new double $g$ and mixed $g c\bar c $ production mechanisms with $gg \to D^{0}D^{0}$ and $gc \to D^{0}D^{0}$ scale-dependent hadronization. The new scenario with gluon fragmentation components results also in a new single-parton scattering mechanism of $gg$ production which is also taken here into account. Results of the numerical calculations are compared with the LHCb data for several correlation observables. The new mechanisms lead to a larger cross sections and to slightly different shapes of the calculated correlation observables.

Drell-Yan production at forward rapidities: a hybrid factorization approach

We discuss the Drell-Yan production of dileptons at high energies in the forward rapidity region of proton-proton collisions in a hybrid high-energy approach. This approach uses unintegrated gluon distributions in one proton and collinear quark/antiquark distributions in the second proton. We compute various distributions for the case of low-mass dilepton production and compare to the LHCb and ATLAS experimental data on dilepton mass distributions. In distinction to dipole approaches, we include four Drell-Yan structure functions as well as cuts at the level of lepton kinematics. The impact of the interference structure functions is rather small for typical experimental cuts. We find that both side contributions ($g q/\bar q$ and $q/\bar q g$) have to be included even for the LHCb rapidity coverage which is in contradiction with what is usually done in the dipole approach. We present results for different unintegrated gluon distributions from the literature. Some of them include saturation effects, but we see no clear hints of saturation even at small $M_{ll}$.

Electromagnetic effects on meson production: a new tool for studying the space-time evolution of heavy ion collisions

We review our studies of spectator-induced electromagnetic (EM) effects on the emission of charged mesons in the final state of ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. We argue that these effects offer sensitivity to the distance $d_E$ between the charged meson formation zone at freeze-out and the spectator system. As such, they can serve as an independent, new tool to probe the space-time and longitudinal evolution of the system created in the collision. As a phenomenological application for this tool in the context of resonance production and decay, we obtain a first estimate of the time of pion emission from EM effects. This we compare to existing HBT data.

Exclusive diffractive production of $π^{+}π^{-}π^{+}π^{-}$ via the intermediate $σσ$ and $ρρ$ states in proton-proton collisions within tensor pomeron approach

We present first predictions of the cross sections and differential distributions for the central exclusive reaction $pp \to pp π^{+} π^{-} π^{+} π^{-}$ being studied at RHIC and LHC. The amplitudes for the processes are formulated in terms of the tensor pomeron and tensor $f_{2 R}$ reggeon exchanges with the vertices respecting the standard crossing and charge-conjugation relations of Quantum Field Theory. The $σσ$ and $ρρ$ contributions to the $π^{+} π^{-} π^{+} π^{-}$ final state are considered focussing on their specificities. The correct inclusion of the pomeron spin structure seems crucial for the considered sequential mechanisms in particular for the $ρρ$ contribution which is treated here for the first time. The mechanism considered gives a significant contribution to the $pp \to pp π^{+} π^{-} π^{+} π^{-}$ reaction. We adjust parameters of our model to the CERN-ISR experimental data and present several predictions for the STAR, ALICE, ATLAS and CMS experiments. A measurable cross section of order of a few $μb$ is obtained including the experimental cuts relevant for the LHC experiments. We show the influence of the experimental cuts on the integrated cross section and on various differential distributions.

Exclusive diffractive production of $π^+ π^-$ pairs within tensor pomeron approach

We discuss exclusive central diffractive production of $π^{+} π^{-}$ in proton-(anti)proton collisions at high energies. Based on a tensor pomeron model we present results of the purely diffractive dipion continuum, the scalar $f_{0}(500)$, $f_{0}(980)$ and tensor $f_{2}(1270)$ resonances decaying into the $π^{+} π^{-}$ pairs as well as the photoproduction mechanism ($ρ^{0}$, Drell-Söding). We discuss how two pomerons couple to the tensor meson $f_{2}(1270)$ and the interference effects of resonance and dipion continuum contributions. The theoretical results are compared with existing STAR, CDF, and CMS experimental data. Predictions for planned or being carried out experiments (ALICE, ATLAS) are presented. We find that the relative contribution of resonant $f_2(1270)$ and dipion continuum strongly depend on the cut on proton transverse momenta (or four-momentum transfer squared $t_{1,2}$) which may explain some controversial observations made by different ISR experiments in the past. Forward production of Drell-Yan dileptons at high energies and low dilepton invariant masses in a $k_t$-factorization approach: Do we see onset of saturation?

We discuss Drell-Yan production of dileptons at high energies in forward rapidity region in a hybrid high-energy approach. This approach uses unintegrated gluon distributions in one proton and collinear quark/antiquark distributions in the second proton. Corresponding momentum-space formula for the differential cross sections in high-energy approximation has been derived. The relation to the commonly used dipole approach is discussed. We conclude and illustrate that some results of the dipole approaches are too approximate, as far as kinemtics is considered, and in fact cannot be used for real experiments. We find that the dipole formula is valid only in very forward/backward rapidity regions ($|y| >$ 5). Some differential cross sections for low-mass dilepton production are shown and compared to the LHCb and ATLAS experimental data. In distinction to dipole approaches, we include four Drell-Yan structure functions (the impact of interference structure functions is rather small for typical experimental cuts). Four-jet production in single- and double-parton scattering within high-energy factorization

We perform a first study of 4-jet production in a complete high-energy factorization (HEF) framework. We include and discuss contributions from both single-parton scattering (SPS) and double-parton scattering (DPS). The calculations are performed for kinematical situations relevant for two experimental measurements (ATLAS and CMS) at the LHC. We compare our results to those reported by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations for different sets of kinematical cuts. The results of the HEF approach are compared with their counterparts for collinear factorization. For symmetric cuts the DPS HEF result is considerably smaller than the one obtained with collinear factorization. The mechanism leading to this difference is of kinematical nature. We conclude that an analysis of inclusive 4-jet production with asymmetric $p_T$-cuts below 50 GeV would be useful to enhance the DPS contribution relative to the SPS contribution. In contrast to the collinear approach, the HEF approach nicely describes the distribution of the $ΔS$ variable, which involves all four jets and their angular correlations.

Four-jet production in the $k_t$-factorisation

We discuss the single-parton and double-parton scattering (SPS or DPS) effects in four-jet production at the LHC. The calculations of both single-parton and double-parton scattering components are done in the high-energy (or $k_{T}$)-factorization approach. Here we follow our recent developments of relevant methods and tools. The calculations are performed for kinematical situations relevant for two experimental measurements (ATLAS and CMS) at the LHC. We compare our results to those reported by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations for different sets of kinematical cuts. A special attention is given to the optimization of kinematical conditions in order to enhance the relative contribution of DPS in four-jet sample. Several differential distributions are calculated and carefully discussed in the context of recent and future searches for DPS effects at the LHC. The dependences of the relative DPS amount is studied as a function of rapidity of jets, rapidity distance, and various azimuthal correlations between jets. The regions with an enhanced DPS contribution are identified.

From deep-inelastic structure functions to two-photon dilepton production in proton-proton collisions

We compare two different approaches used for calculating cross sections for the two-photon $p p \to l^+ l^- X$ process. In one of the approaches photon is treated as a collinear parton in the proton. In the second approach a recently proposed $k_T$-factorization method is used. In this presentation we discuss sensitivity of the results to the choice of structure function parametrization and experimental cuts in the $k_T$-factorization approach. We compare results of our calculations with recent experimental data for dilepton production and find that in most cases the contribution of the photon-photon mechanism is rather small. We discuss how to enhance the photon-photon contribution. We also compare our results to those of recent measurements of exclusive and semi-exclusive $e^+ e^-$ pair production with certain experimental data by the CMS collaboration.

Helicity in Proton-Proton Elastic Scattering and the Spin Structure of the Pomeron

We discuss different models for the spin structure of the nonperturbative pomeron: scalar, vector, and rank-2 symmetric tensor. The ratio of single-helicity-flip to helicity-conserving amplitudes in polarised high-energy proton-proton elastic scattering, known as the complex r_5 parameter, is calculated for these models. We compare our results to experimental data from the STAR experiment. We show that the spin-0 (scalar) pomeron model is clearly excluded by the data, while the vector pomeron is inconsistent with the rules of quantum field theory. The tensor pomeron is found to be perfectly consistent with the STAR data.

Inclusive production of J/$ψ$ and $ψ'$ mesons at the LHC

We discuss the prompt production of $J/ψ$ mesons in proton-proton collisions at the LHC within a NRQCD $k_{t}$-factorization approach using Kimber-Martin-Ryskin (KMR) unintegrated gluon distributions (UGDF). We include both direct color-singlet production ($gg \to J/ψ$g) as well as a feed-down from $χ_{c} \to J/ψγ$ and $ψ' \to J/ψX$. The production of the decaying mesons ($χ_{c}$ or $ψ'$)is also calculated within NRQCD $k_{t}$-factorization. The corresponding matrix elements for $gg \to J/ψ$, $gg \to ψ'$ and $gg \to χ_{c}$ include parameters of the nonrelativistic spatial wave functions of quarkonia at $r=0$, which are taken from potential models from the literature. We get the ratio of the corresponding of the cross sections for $χ_{c}(2)$-to-$χ_{c}(1)$ much closer to experimental data than obtained in recent analyses. Differential distributions in rapidity of $J/ψ$ and $ψ'$ are calculated and compared to experimental data of the ALICE and LHCb collaborations. We discuss possible onset of gluon saturation effects at forward/backward rapidities. One can describe the experimental data for $J/ψ$ production within model uncertainties with color-singlet component only. Therefore our theoretical results leave only a relatively small room for the color-octet contributions.

Interpreting the 750 GeV diphoton signal as technipion

We discuss whether the enhancement in the diphoton final state at $M_{γγ}$ = 750 GeV, observed recently by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations could be a neutral pseudoscalar technipion $\tildeπ^0$. We considered two distinct minimal models for the dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking. Here we concentrate only on two-flavor vector-like technicolor model and we assume that the two-photon fusion is a dominant production mechanism. We include contributions of $2 \to 1$, $2 \to 2$ and $2 \to 3$ partonic processes. All the mechanisms give similar contributions to the cross section. With the strong Yukawa (technipion-techniquark) coupling $g_{TC} \simeq 20$ we roughly obtain the measured cross section of the "signal". With such value of $g_{TC}$ we get a relatively small total decay width $Γ_{\rm tot}$. We discuss also the size of the signal at lower energies (LHC, Tevatron) for $γγ$ final states, where the enhancement was not observed. We predict a measurable cross section for neutral technipion production associated with one or two soft jets. The technipion signal is compared with the Standard Model diphoton background contributions. We observe the dominance of inelastic-inelastic $γγ$ processes. We predict the signal cross section for purely exclusive $p p \to p p γγ$ procesess at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV to be about 0.2 fb. Such a cross section would be, however, difficult to measure with the planned integrated luminosity. We conclude that in all considered cases the signal is below the background or/and below the threshold set by statistics although some tension can be seen.

New mechanisms for double charmed meson production at the LHCb

We discuss production of $D^0 D^0$ (and ${\bar D}^0 {\bar D}^0$) pairs related to the LHCb Collaboration results for $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV in proton-proton scattering. We consider double-parton scattering (DPS) mechanisms of double $c \bar c$ production and subsequent $cc \to D^{0}D^{0}$ hadronization as well as double $g$ and mixed $g c\bar c $ production with $gg \to D^{0}D^{0}$ and $gc \to D^{0}D^{0}$ hadronization calculated with the help of the scale-dependent hadronization functions of Kniehl et al. Single-parton scattering (SPS) mechanism of digluon production is also taken into account. We compare our results with several correlation observables in azimuthal angle $φ_{D^{0}D^{0}}$ between $D^{0}$ mesons or in dimeson invariant mass $M_{D^{0}D^{0}}$. The inclusion of new mechanisms with $g \to D^{0}$ fragmentation leads to larger cross sections, than when including only DPS mechanism with standard scale-independent $cc \to D^{0}D^{0}$ fragmentation functions. Some consequences of the presence of the new mechanisms are discussed. In particular a larger $σ_{eff}$ is needed to describe the LHCb data. There is a signature that $σ_{eff}$ may depend on transverse momentum of $c$ quarks and/or $\bar c$ antiquarks.

New single- and double-parton scattering mechanisms for double charmed meson production

We discuss charm meson-meson pair production recently observed by the LHCb Collaboration at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV in proton-proton scattering. We examine double-parton scattering (DPS) mechanisms of double $c \bar c$ production and following $cc \to D^{0}D^{0}$ hadronization as well as double $g$ and mixed $g c\bar c $ production with $gg \to D^{0}D^{0}$ and $gc \to D^{0}D^{0}$ hadronization calculated with the help of the scale-dependent KKKS08 fragmentation functions. Calculated differential distributions as a function of transverse momentum $p_{T}$ of one of the $D^{0}$ mesons, pair invariant mass $M_{D^{0}D^{0}}$ and azimuthal angle $φ_{D^{0}D^{0}}$ distributions are confronted with the measured ones. The manifestation of the new SPS mechanisms with $g \to D^{0}$ fragmentation within the scale-dependent fragmentation scheme change the overall picture suitable for standard scale-independent fragmentation where only DPS $cc \to D^{0}D^{0}$ mechanism is present. Photoproduction of $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ states in exclusive and proton-dissociative diffractive events

The amplitude for $γp \to V p$, where $V$ is a $J/ψ$ or $Υ$ ground state or excited vector meson, is calculated in a pQCD $k_{T}$-factorization approach. We use this amplitude to predict the cross section for exclusive photoproduction of $J/ψ, ψ', Υ$ mesons in proton-proton collisions. Calculations are performed for a variety of unintegrated gluon distributions, and we compare our results to LHCb data. Here we especially focus on the possibilty of constraining saturation effects. Compared to earlier calculations we include both Dirac and Pauli electromagnetic form factors. We discuss the role of the $Q\bar Q$ light-cone wave functions for differential distributions for ratios such as $σ(ψ')/σ(J/ψ)$. Absorption effects are always taken into account. We also discuss the related diffractive production in proton dissociative events. Here we concentrate on electromagnetic dissociation , which is calculable without additional free parameters. Besides being of interest in their own right, dissociative events constitute an important experimental background to exclusive production.

Search for walking technipion in four-jet sample

We discuss how to search for a possibe signal of the recently observed 750 GeV enhancement in the diphoton channel in the four-jet production. In the present studies we assume that the produced state is pseudoscalar. This fact, when combined with specificity of the corresponding amplitude, allows to improve the signal-to-background (S/B) ratio. We discuss in detail how to impose cuts on jets in rapidity and transverse momenta in order to find optimal S/B ratio and not to loose too much statistics. Our study suggest a measurement of two soft (low cut on $p_t$) large-rapidity jets and two hard (high cut on $p_t$) mid-rapidity jets. Azimuthal correlation between the soft external jets may be useful to further improve the situation. Several differential distributions in rapidities and transverse momenta of jets as well as dijet invariant mass are shown. The integrated cross sections corresponding to different cuts are collected in a table and number of events are presented.

Two-gluon exchange contribution to elastic $γγ\to γγ$ scattering and production of two-photons in ultraperipheral ultrarelativistic heavy ion and proton-proton collisions

We discuss the two-gluon exchange contribution (formally three-loops) to elastic photon-photon scattering in the high-energy approximation. The elastic $γγ\to γγ$ amplitude is given in the impact-factor representation for all helicity configurations and finite quark masses. We discuss the importance of including the charm quark, which contribution, due to interference, can enhance the cross section considerably. We investigate the contribution to the $γγ\to γγ$ amplitude from the soft region, by studying its dependence on nonperturbative gluon mass. Helicity-flip contributions are shown to be much smaller than helicity-conserving ones. We identify region(s) of phase space where the two-gluon exchange contribution becomes important ingredient compared to box and nonperturbative VDM-Regge mechanisms considered in the literature. Consequences for the $A A \to A A γγ$ reaction are discussed. Several differential distributions are shown. A feasibility study to observe the effect of two-gluon exchange is presented. We perform a similar analysis for the $p p \to p p γγ$ reaction. Only by imposing severe cuts on $M_{γγ}$ and a narrow window on photon transverse momenta the two gluon contribution becomes comparable to the box contribution but the corresponding cross section is rather small.

A short review of some double-parton scattering processes

A few examples of quickly developing field of double parton scattering are discussed. We present arguments that the production of two pairs of charm quark-antiquark is the golden reaction to study the double parton scattering effects. We discuss briefly also mechanism of single parton scattering and show that it gives much smaller contribution to the $c \bar c c \bar c$ final state. In this context we discuss also the contribution of perturbative parton-splitting mechanism which should also be added to the conventional DPS mechanism. The presence of the letter leads to collision energy and other kinematical variables dependence of so-called $σ_{eff}$. We briefly discuss production of four jets. We concentrate on estimation of the contribution of DPS for jets widely separated in rapidity. Finally we briefly mention about DPS effects in production of $W^+ W^-$.

Central exclusive production of pion pairs in proton-(anti)proton collisions

We present results for exclusive $p p \to p p π^+ π^-$ or $p \bar p \to p \bar p π^+ π^-$ processes at high energies. We discuss the role of new additional absorption corrections in the non-resonant Lebiedowicz-Szczurek model mediated by the pomeron and reggeon exchanges. We discuss also the role of the $ρ^{0}$ and the Drell-Söding photoproduction mechanism. We compare our predictions with recent experimental results obtained by the STAR and CDF Collaborations. We present predictions for the ALICE, ATLAS and CMS experiments. Differential distributions in invariant two-pion mass and two-dimensional distributions in proton-proton relative azimuthal angle and transverse momentum of one of the protons are presented.

Double charm production in single- and double-parton scattering

We discuss production of two pairs of $c \bar c$ in proton-proton collisions at the LHC. Both double-parton scattering (DPS) and single-parton scattering (SPS) contributions are included in the analysis. Each step of DPS is calculated within $k_t$-factorization approach which effectively includes some next-to-leading order corrections. The discussed mechanisms unavoidably lead to the production of pairs of mesons: $D_i D_j$ (each containing $c$ quarks) or $\bar D_i \bar D_j$ (each containing $\bar c$ antiquarks). We calculate corresponding differential distribution for $(D^0 D^0$ + $\bar D^0 \bar D^0)$ production. Within large theoretical uncertainties the predicted DPS cross section is fairly similar to the cross section measured recently by the LHCb collaboration. We also present first results for the $2 \to 4$ single-parton scattering $g g \to c \bar c c \bar c$ subprocess for the first time fully within the $k_t$-factorization approach. In this calculation we have used an off-shell matrix element squared calculated using recently developed techniques. The results are compared with our earlier result obtained within the collinear approach. Only slightly larger cross sections are obtained than in the case of the collinear approach but still the SPS mechanism contribution is much smaller than the DPS one. Inclusion of transverse momenta of gluons entering the hard process leads to a much stronger azimuthal decorrelation between $c c$ and $\bar c \bar c$ than in the collinear-factorization approach. A comparison to predictions of double parton scattering (DPS) results and the LHCb data strongly suggests that the assumption of two fully independent DPS ($g g \to c \bar c \otimes g g \to c \bar c$) may be too approximate.

Double parton scattering at high energies

We discuss a few examples of rich newly developing field of double parton scattering. We start our presentation from production of two pairs of charm quark-antiquark and argue that it is the golden reaction to study the double parton scattering effects. In addition to the DPS we consider briefly also mechanism of single parton scattering and show that it gives much smaller contribution to the $c \bar c c \bar c$ final state. Next we discuss a perturbative parton-splitting mechanism which should be included in addition to the conventional DPS mechanism. We show that the presence of this mechanism unavoidably leads to collision energy and other kinematical variables dependence of so-called $σ_{eff}$ parameter being extracted from different experiments. Next we briefly discuss production of four jets. We concentrate on estimation of the contribution of DPS for jets remote in rapidity. Understanding of this contribution is very important in the context of searches for BFKL effects known under the the name Mueller-Navelet jets. We discuss the situation in a more general context. Finally we briefly mention about DPS effects in production of $W^+ W^-$. Outlook closes the presentation.

Double-scattering mechanism of production of two $ρ^0$ mesons in ultraperipheral, ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions

We study, for the first time, differential distributions for two $ρ^0$ meson production in exclusive ultraperipheral, ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions via a double-scattering mechanism. The calculations are done in the impact parameter space. The cross section for $γA \to ρ^0 A$ is parametrized based on an existing model. Smearing of $ρ^0$ masses is taken into account. The results of calculations for single and double-$ρ^0$ production are compared to experimental data at the RHIC and LHC energies. The mechanism considered gives a significant contribution to the $AA \to AA π^+π^-π^+π^-$ reaction. Some observables related to charged pions are presented too. We compare results of our calculations with the STAR collaboration results for four charged pion production.

Exclusive production of heavy charged Higgs boson pairs in the $p p \to p p H^+ H^-$ reaction at the LHC and a future circular collider

We calculate differential cross sections for exclusive production of heavy charged scalar, weakly interacting particles (charged Higgs bosons, charged technipions, etc.) via photon-photon exchanges in the $p p \to p p H^+ H^-$ reaction with exact $2 \to 4$ kinematics. We present distributions in rapidities, transverse momenta, and correlations in azimuthal angles between the protons and between the charged Higgs bosons. As an example, the integrated cross section for $\sqrt{s}$ = 14~TeV (LHC) is about 0.1~fb and about 0.9~fb at the Future Circular Collider (FCC) for $\sqrt{s}$ = 100~TeV when assuming $m_{H^{\pm}} = 150$~GeV. The results are compared with results obtained within standard equivalent-photon approximation known from the literature. We discuss the role of the Dirac and Pauli electromagnetic form factors of the proton. We have also performed first calculations of cross sections for the exclusive diffractive Khoze-Martin-Ryskin mechanism. We have estimated limits on the $g_{h H^+ H^-}$ coupling constant within two-Higgs dublet model based on recent experimental data from the LHC. The diffractive contribution is, however, much smaller than the $γγ$ one. The $Z γ$, $γZ$, and $ZZ$ exchanges give even smaller contributions. Absorption corrections are calculated for the first time differentially for various distributions. In general, they lead to a damping of the cross section. The damping depends on the $M_{H^{+}H^{-}}$ invariant mass and on $t$ four-momentum transfers squared. In contrast to diffractive processes, the larger the collision energy, the smaller the effect of absorption. We discuss a possibility to measure the exclusive production of two charged Higgs bosons with the help of so-called "forward proton detectors" at the LHC experiments.

Exploring double-parton scattering effects for jets with large rapidity separation and in four-jet production at the LHC

We present an estimation of the contribution of double parton scattering (DPS) for jets widely separated in rapidity and for four-jet sample. In the case of four-jet production we calculate cross section for both single-parton scattering (SPS) using the code ALPGEN as well as for DPS in LO collinear approach. The DPS contribution is calculated within the so-called factorized Ansatz and each step of DPS is calculated in the LO collinear approximation. We show that the relative (with respect to SPS dijets and to the BFKL Mueller-Navelet (MN) jets) contribution of DPS is growing at large rapidity distance between jets. The calculated differential cross sections as a function of rapidity distance between the most remote in rapidity jets are compared with recent results of LL and NLL BFKL calculations for the Mueller-Navelet jet production at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV. Our results for four-jet sample are compared with experimental data obtained recently by the CMS collaboration and a rather good agreement is achieved. We propose to impose different cuts in order to enhance the relative DPS contribution. The relative DPS contribution increases when decreasing the lower cut on the jet transverse momenta as well as when a low lower cut on the rapidity distance between the most remote jets is imposed.

Higgs production within $k_t$-factorization with unintegrated gluon distributions

We present differential cross sections for Higgs boson and/or two-photon production from intermediate (virtual) Higgs boson within the formalism of $k_t$-factorization. Resulting distributions for two photons from the Higgs boson are compared with recent ATLAS collaboration data. In contrast to a recent calculation the leading order $g g \to H$ contribution is rather small compared to the ATLAS experimental data ($γγ$ transverse momentum and rapidity distributions). We include also higher-order contribution $g g \to H (\to γγ) g$, $g g \to g H g$ and the contribution of the $W^+ W^-$ and $Z^0 Z^0$ exchanges. The $gg\to Hg$ mechanism gives a similar contribution as the $gg\to H$ mechanism. We argue that there is almost no double counting when adding $gg\to H$ and $gg\to Hg$ contributions due to different topology of corresponding Feynman diagrams. The final sum is comparable with the ATLAS two-photon data.

Open charm meson production at BNL RHIC within $k_{t}$-factorization approach and revision of their semileptonic decays

We discuss inclusive production of open charm mesons in proton-proton scattering at the BNL RHIC. The calculation is performed in the framework of $k_t$-factorization approach which effectively includes higher-order pQCD corrections. Different models of unintegrated gluon distributions (UGDF) from the literature are used. We focus on UGDF models favoured by the LHC data and on a new up-to-date parametrizations based on the HERA collider DIS high-precision data. Results of the $k_t$-factorization approach are compared to next-to-leading order collinear predictions. The hadronization of heavy quarks is done by means of fragmentation function technique. The theoretical transverse momentum distributions of charmed mesons are compared with recent experimental data of the STAR collaboration at $\sqrt{s} = 200$ and $500$ GeV. Theoretical uncertainties related to the choice of renormalization and factorization scales as well as due to the quark mass are discussed. Very good description of the measured integrated cross sections and differential distributions is obtained for the Jung setB$0$ CCFM UGDF. Revised charm and bottom theoretical cross sections corresponding to those measured recently by the STAR and PHENIX collaborations for semileptonic decays of $D$ and $B$ mesons are presented. Significant improvement in theoretical description of the non-photonic electrons measurements is clearly obtained with respect to the previous studies within the $k_{t}$-factorization.

Photoproduction of $J/ψ$ mesons in peripheral and semi-central heavy ion collisions

We calculate total and differential cross sections for $J/ψ$ photoproduction in ultrarelativistic lead-lead collisions at the LHC energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76$ TeV. In the present approach we use a simple model based on vector dominance picture and multiple scattering of the hadronic ($c \bar c$) state in a cold nucleus as an example. In our analysis we use both the classical mechanics and quantum (Glauber) formulae for calculating $σ_{tot}(J/ψPb)$ which is a building block of our model. We compare our UPC results with ALICE and CMS data. For semi-central collisions ($b<R_A+R_B$) a modification of the photon flux seems necessary. We discuss different physics motivated approximations. We try to estimate the cross sections for different centrality bins and for $J/ψ$ mesons emitted in forward rapidity range ($2.5<y<4$) corresponding to recent ALICE experimental results. Reasonable results are obtained but open questions are discussed.

We discuss also first calculations of cross section for exclusive diffractive pQCD mechanism with estimated limits on the $g_{hH^{+}H^{-}}$ coupling constant within 2HDM based on the LHC experimental data. The diffractive contribution is much smaller than the $γγ$ one. Absorption corrections are calculated differentially for various distributions. In general, they lead to a damping of the cross section. The damping depends on $M_{H^{+}H^{-}}$ invariant mass and on four-momentum transfers squared in the proton line. We discuss a possibility to measure the exclusive production of $H^{\pm}$ bosons.

We present the main results of our recent analyses of exclusive production of vector charmonia ($J/ψ$ and $ψ'$) in $k_t$-factorization approach and for $γγ$ production of charged dilepton pairs in exclusive and semiinclusive processes in a new approach, similar in spirit to $k_t$-factorization. The results for charmonia are compared with recent results of the LHCb collaboration. We include some helicity flip contributions and quantify the effect of absorption correction. Revision of absorption corrections for the $p p \to p p π^{+} π^{-}$ process

We include new additional absorption corrections into the Lebiedowicz-Szczurek (non-resonant) model for $p p \to p p π^+ π^-$ or $p \bar p \to p \bar p π^+ π^-$ processes. They are related to the $πN$ nonperturbative interaction in the final state of the reaction. The role of the absorption corrections is quantified for several differential distributions for $\sqrt{s}$ = 0.2, 1.96, 7, and 8 TeV. The new absorption corrections lead to further decrease of the cross section by about a factor of two. They change the shape of some distributions ($d σ/ dt$, $d σ/ dp_{t,p}$, $d σ/d ϕ_{pp}$) but leave almost unchanged shape of other distributions ($d σ/ dM_{ππ}$, $d σ/ dy_π$, $d σ/dp_{t,π}$, $d σ/ d ϕ_{ππ}$). The effect may have important impact on the interpretation of the recent STAR and CDF data as well as the forthcoming data of the ALICE, ATLAS + ALFA and CMS + TOTEM collaborations.

Searching for and exploring double-parton scattering effects in four-jet production at the LHC

We discuss four-jet production at the LHC. We calculate cross section for both single-parton scattering (SPS) using the ALPGEN code as well as for double-parton scattering (DPS) in leading-order collinear approach. Our results are compared with experimental data obtained recently by the CMS collaboration. We show that the ALPGEN code relatively well describes distributions in transverse momenta and rapidity of each of the four jets ordered by their transverse momenta (leading, subleading etc.). The SPS mechanism does not explain the distributions at large rapidity for the leading jet. The DPS mechanism considerably improves the agreement with the experimental data in this corner of the phase space. In order to enhance the relative DPS contribution we propose to impose different cuts. The relative DPS contribution increases when decreasing the lower cut on the jet transverse momenta as well as when a low lower cut on the rapidity distance between the most remote jets is imposed. We predict very flat distribution in azimuthal angle between the most remote jets with low lower cuts on jets transverse momentum. We identify phase-space corners where the DPS content is enhanced relatively to the SPS one.

Single- and central-diffractive production of open charm and bottom mesons at the LHC

We discuss diffractive production of open charm and bottom mesons at the LHC. The differential cross sections for single- and central-diffractive mechanisms for $c\bar c$ and $b\bar b$ pair production are calculated in the framework of the Ingelman-Schlein model corrected for absorption effects. The LO gluon-gluon fusion and quark-antiquark anihilation partonic subprocesses are taken into consideration, which are calculated within standard collinear approximation. The extra corrections from reggeon exchanges are taken into account. The hadronization of charm and bottom quarks is taken into account by means of fragmentation functions. Predictions for single- and central-diffractive production in the case of $D$ and $B$ mesons, as well as $D\bar D$ pairs are presented, including detector acceptance of the ATLAS, CMS and LHCb Collaborations.

Subleading processes in production of $W^+ W^-$ pairs in proton-proton collisions

We discuss new subleading processes for inclusive production of $W^+ W^-$ pairs. We focus mainly on photon-photon induced processes. We include elastic-elastic, elastic-inelastic, inelastic-elastic and inelastic-inelastic contributions. The inelastic photon distributions in the proton are calculated in two different ways: naive approach used already in the literature and using photon distributions by solving special evolution equations with the photon being a parton in the proton. The results strongly depend on the approach used. The resolved photon contribution was calculated in addition and found to be small. We also calculate the cross section for single-diffractive production of $W^+ W^-$ pairs including pomeron and reggeon exchanges in the Ingelman-Schlein model. Finally we only mention here about double parton contribution which is interesting by itself.

Two-photon dilepton production in proton-proton collisions: two alternative approaches

We investigate different methods to incorporate the effect of photons in hard processes. We compare two different approaches used for calculating cross sections for two-photon $p p \to l^+ l^- X$ process. In one of the approaches photon is treated as a collinear parton in the proton. In the second approach recently proposed a $k_T$-factorization method is used. We discuss how results of the collinear parton model depend on the initial condition for the QCD evolution and discuss an approximate treatment where photon is excluded from the combined QCD-QED evolution. We demonstrate that it is not necessary to put photon into the evolution equation as often done recently but it is sufficient to use a simplified approach in which photon couples to quarks and antiquarks which by themselves undergo DGLAP evolution equations. We discuss sensitivity of the results to the choice of structure function parametrization and experimental cuts in the $k_T$-factorization approach. A new optimal structure function parametrization is proposed.

$W^+ W^-$ pair production in proton-proton collisions: small missing terms

$W^+ W^-$ production is one of the golden channels for testing the Standard Model as well for searches beyond the Standard Model. We discuss many new subleading processes for inclusive production of $W^+ W^-$ pairs generally not included in the litterature so far. We focus mainly on photon-photon induced processes. We include elastic-elastic, elastic-inelastic, inelastic-elastic and inelastic-inelastic contributions. We also calculate the contributions with resolved photons including the partonic substructure of the virtual photon. Predictions for the total cross section and differential distributions in $W$- boson rapidity and transverse momentum as well as $WW$ invariant mass are presented. The $γγ$ components only constitute about 1-2 \% of the inclusive $W^+ W^-$ cross section but increases up to about 10 \% at large $W^{\pm}$ transverse momenta, and are even comparable to the dominant $q \bar q$ component at large $M_{WW}$, i.e. are much larger than the $g g \to W^+ W^-$ one.

Applications of the tensor pomeron model to exclusive central diffractive meson production

We discuss exclusive central diffractive production of scalar ($f_{0}(980)$, $f_{0}(1370)$, $f_{0}(1500)$), pseudoscalar ($η$, $η'(958)$), and vector ($ρ^{0}$) mesons in proton-proton collisions. We show that high-energy central production of mesons could provide crucial information on the spin structure of the soft pomeron. The amplitudes are formulated in terms of effective vertices respecting standard rules of Quantum Field Theory and propagators for the exchanged pomeron and reggeons. For the scalar and pseudoscalar meson production, in most cases, two lowest orbital angular momentum - spin couplings are necessary to describe WA102 experimental differential distributions. Different pomeron-pomeron-meson tensorial (vectorial) coupling structures are possible in general. For the $ρ^{0}$ production the photon-tensor pomeron/reggeon exchanges are considered and the coupling parameters are fixed from the H1 and ZEUS experimental data of the $γp \to ρ^{0} p$ reaction. We present first predictions of this mechanism for the $pp \to pp (ρ^{0} \to π^{+} π^{-})$ reaction being studied at COMPASS, RHIC, Tevatron, and LHC. We analyse influence of the experimental cuts on integrated cross section and various differential distributions for produced mesons.

Central $μ^{+}μ^{-}$ production via photon-photon fusion in proton-proton collisions with proton dissociation

We present a formalism which uses fluxes of equivalent photons including transverse momenta of the intermediate photons. The formalism reminds the familiar $k_t$-factorization approach used, e.g., to study the two-photon production of $c\bar{c}$ or $b\bar{b}$ pairs. The results of the new method are compared with those obtained using the code LPAIR, and a good agreement is obtained. The inclusion of the photon transverse momenta is necessary in studies of correlation observables. We present distributions for the dimuon invariant mass, transverse momentum of the muon pair and relative azimuthal angle between muons separately for elastic-elastic, elastic-inelastic, inelastic-elastic and inelastic-inelastic mechanisms. For typical experimental cuts all mechanisms give similar contributions. The results are shown for different sets of cuts relevant for the LHC experiments. The cross sections in different regions of phase space depend on $F_2$ structure function in different regions of $x$ and $Q^2$. A comment on $F_2$ is made.

Charge splitting of directed flow and space-time picture of pion emission from the electromagnetic interactions with spectators

We estimate the effect of the spectator-induced electromagnetic interaction on the directed flow of charged pions. For intermediate centrality Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=7.7$~GeV, we demonstrate that the electromagnetic interaction between spectator charges and final state pions results in charge splitting of positive and negative pion directed flow. Such a charge splitting is visible in the experimental data reported by the STAR Collaboration. The magnitude of this charge splitting appears to strongly depend on the actual distance between the pion emission site (pion at freeze-out) and the spectator system. As such, the above electromagnetic effect brings new, independent information on the space-time evolution of pion production in heavy ion collisions. From the comparison of our present analysis to our earlier studies made for pions produced at higher rapidity, we formulate conclusions on the rapidity dependence of the distance between the pion emission site and the spectator system. This distance appears to decrease with increasing pion rapidity, reflecting the longitudinal expansion of the strongly-interacting system responsible for pion emission. Thus for the first time, information on the space-time characteristics of the system is being provided by means of the spectator-induced electromagnetic interaction. The above electromagnetic effect being in fact a straight-forward consequence of the presence of spectator charges in the collision, we consider that it should be considered as a baseline for studies of other phenomena, like those related to the electric conductivity of the quark-gluon plasma.

Charm meson production and double parton interactions at the LHC

We discuss production of open charm mesons in proton-proton collisions at the LHC. The cross section for inclusive production of $c \bar c$ pairs is calculated within the $k_{\perp}$-factorization approach in which a major part of higher-order corrections is belived to be effectively included. We use and test the applicability of several unintegrated gluon distributions. Numerical results of the $k_{\perp}$-factorization approach are compared to NLO pQCD collinear predictions. Inclusive differential distributions in transverse momentum and (pseudo)rapidity of several charmed mesons are presented and compared to recent results of the ALICE, ATLAS and LHCb collaborations. We also examine production of neutral charmed meson-antimeson pairs ($D^0 {\overline D^0}$) in unique kinematics of forward rapidities of the LHCb experiment. Kinematical correlations in azimuthal angle $φ_{D^0 {\overline D^0}}$, invariant mass $M_{D^0 {\overline D^0}}$ and rapidity difference $Y_{D^0 {\overline D^0}}$ distributions are calculated. Moreover, we also discuss production of two pairs of $c \bar c$ within a simple formalism of double-parton scattering (DPS). We compare results of calculations of single-parton scattering (SPS) and double-parton scattering (DPS) for production of $c \bar c c \bar c$ and for $D^0-D^0$ meson-meson correlations. We compare our predictions for double charm production with recent results of the LHCb collaboration for azimuthal angle $φ_{D^0 D^0}$ distribution, dimeson invariant mass $M_{D^0 D^0}$ and rapidity distance between mesons $Y_{D^0 D^0}$. The obtained results clearly certify the dominance of DPS in the production of events with double charm.

Conventional versus single-ladder-splitting contributions to double parton scattering production of two quarkonia, two Higgs bosons and $c \bar c c \bar c$

The double parton distributions (dPDF), both conventional and those corresponding to parton splitting, are calculated and compared for different two-parton combinations. The conventional and splitting dPDFs have very similar shape in $x_1$ and $x_2$. We make a first quantitative evaluation of the single-ladder-splitting contribution to double parton scattering (DPS) production of two S- or P-wave quarkonia, two Higgs bosons and $c \bar c c \bar c$. The ratio of the single-ladder-splitting to conventional contributions is discussed as a function of centre-of-mass energy, mass of the produced system and other kinematical variables. Using a simple model for the dependence of the conventional two-parton distribution on transverse parton separation (Gaussian and independent of $x_i$ and scales), we find that the 2v1 contribution is as big as the 2v2 contribution discussed in recent years in the literature. This means that the phenomenological analyses of $σ_{eff}$ including only the conventional DPS mechanism have to be revised including explicitly the single-ladder-splitting contributions discussed here. The differential distributions in rapidity and transverse momenta calculated for conventional and single-ladder-splitting DPS processes are however very similar which causes their experimental separation to be rather difficult, if not impossible. The direct consequence of the existence of the two components (conventional and splitting) is the energy and process dependence of the empirical parameter $σ_{eff}$. This is illustrated in our paper for the considered processes.

Double parton effects for jets with large rapidity separation

We discuss production of four jets $pp \rightarrow j j j j X$ with at least two jets with large rapidity separation in proton-proton collisions at the LHC through the mechanism of double-parton scattering (DPS). The cross section is calculated in a factorizaed approximation. Each hard subprocess is calculated in LO collinear approximation. The LO pQCD calculations are shown to give a reasonably good descritption of CMS and ATLAS data on inclusive jet production. It is shown that relative contribution of DPS is growing with increasing rapidity distance between the most remote jets, center-of-mass energy and with decreasing (mini)jet transverse momenta. We show also result for angular azimuthal dijet correlations calculated in the framework of $k_t$-factorization approaximation.

Double-parton scattering contribution to production of jet pairs with large rapidity separation at the LHC

We discuss production of four-jet final state $pp \rightarrow j j j j X$ in proton-proton collisions at the LHC through the mechanism of double-parton scattering (DPS) in the context of jets with large rapidity separation. The DPS contributions are calculated within the so-called factorized Ansatz and each step of DPS is calculated in the LO collinear approximation. The LO pQCD calculations are shown to give a reasonably good descritption of recent CMS and ATLAS data on inclusive jet production and therefore this formalism can be used to reliably estimate the DPS effects. Relative contribution of DPS is growing at large rapidity distance between jets. This is consistent with our experience from previous studies of double-parton scattering effects in the case of open and hidden charm production. The calculated differential cross sections as a function of rapidity distance between the most remote in rapidity jets are compared with recent results of LL and NLL BFKL calculations for Mueller-Navelet (MN) jet production at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV. The DPS contribution to widely rapidity separated jet production is carefully studied for the present energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV and also at the nominal LHC energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 14 TeV and in different ranges of jet transverse momenta. The differential cross section as a function of dijet transverse momenta as well as two-dimensional ($p_{T}(y_{min})\times p_{T}(y_{max})$)-plane correlations for DPS mechanism are also presented. Some ideas how the DPS effects could be studied in the case of double dijet production are suggested.

Exclusive central diffractive production of scalar, pseudoscalar and vector mesons

The amplitudes are formulated in terms of effective vertices required to respect standard rules of Quantum Field Theory and propagators for the exchanged pomeron and reggeons. Different pomeron-pomeron-meson tensorial (vectorial) coupling structures are possible in general. In most cases two lowest orbital angular momentum - spin couplings are necessary to describe experimental differential distributions. For the $f_{0}(980)$ and $η$ production the reggeon-pomeron, pomeron-reggeon, and reggeon-reggeon exchanges are included in addition, which seems to be necessary at relatively low energies. The theoretical results are compared with the WA102 experimental data, in order to determine the model parameters. For the $ρ^{0}$ production the photon-pomeron and pomeron-photon exchanges are considered. The coupling parameters of tensor pomeron and/or reggeon are fixed from the H1 and ZEUS experimental data of the $γp \to ρ^{0} p$ reaction. We present first predictions of this mechanism for $pp \to pp π^{+} π^{-}$ reaction being studied at COMPASS, RHIC, Tevatron, and LHC. Correlation in azimuthal angle between outgoing protons and distribution in pion rapidities at $\sqrt{s} = 7$TeV are presented. We show that high-energy central production of mesons could provide crucial information on the spin structure of the soft pomeron.

Exclusive photoproduction of charmonia in $γp \to V p$ and $p p \to p V p$ reactions within $k_t$-factorization approach

The amplitude for $γp \to J/ψp$ ($γp \to ψ' p$) is calculated in a pQCD $k_{T}$-factorization approach. The total cross section for this process is calculated for different unintegrated gluon distributions and compared with the HERA data and the data extracted recently by the LHCb collaboration. The amplitude for $γp \to J/ψp$ ($γp \to ψ' p$) is used to predict the cross section for exclusive photoproduction of $J/ψ$ ($ψ'$) meson in proton-proton collisions. Compared to earlier calculations we include both Dirac and Pauli electromagnetic form factors. The effect of Pauli form factor is quantified. Absorption effects are taken into account and their role is discussed in detail. Different differential distributions e.g. in $J/ψ$ ($ψ'$) rapidity and transverse momentum are presented and compared with existing experimental data. The UGDF with nonlinear effects built in better describe recent experimental data of the LHCb collaboration but no definite conclusion on onset of saturation can be drawn. We present our results also for the Tevatron. A good agreement with the CDF experimental data points at the midrapidity for both $J/ψ$ and $ψ'$ is achieved.

Inclusive production of Higgs boson in the two-photon channel at the LHC within $k_{t}$-factorization approach and with the Standard Model couplings

We calculate differential cross sections for Higgs boson and/or two-photon production from intermediate (virtual) Higgs boson within the formalism of $k_t$-factorization. The off-shell $g^* g^* \to H$ matrix elements are used. We compare results obtained with infinite top fermion (quark) mass and with finite mass taken into account. The latter effect is rather small. We compare results with different unintegrated gluon distributions from the literature. Two methods are used. In the first method first Higgs boson is produced in the $2 \to 1$ $g g \to H$ $k_t$-factorization approach and then isotropic decay with the Standard Model branching fraction is performed. In the second method we calculate directly two photons coupled to the virtual Higgs boson. The results of the two methods are compared and differences are discussed. The results for two photons from the Higgs boson are compared with recent ATLAS collaboration data. In contrast to a recent calculation the leading order $g g \to H$ contribution is rather small compared to the ATLAS experimental data ($γγ$ transverse momentum and rapidity distributions) for all unintegrated gluon distributions from the literature. We include also higher-order contribution $g g \to H (\to γγ) g$, $g g \to g H g$ and the contribution of the $W^+ W^-$ and $Z^0 Z^0$. The $gg\to Hg$ mechanism gives similar cross section as the $gg\to H$ mechanism. We argue that there is almost no double counting when adding $gg\to H$ and $gg\to Hg$ contributions due to different topology of Feynman diagrams. The final sum is comparable with the ATLAS two-photon data. We discuss uncertainties related to both the theoretical approach and existing UGDFs.

Peripheral, ultrarelativistic production of particles in heavy ion collisions

The cross sections for the production of two-pions in ultraperipheral ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions, calculated in the impact parameter Equivalent Photon Approximation (EPA), are presented. Differential distributions in impact parameter, dipion invariant mass, single pion and dipion rapidity, pion transverse momentum and pion pseudorapidity are shown. The $γγ\to π^+ π^-$ subprocess constitutes a background to the $A A \to A ρ^0 (\to π^+ π^-) A$ process, initiated by emission of a photon by one of colliding nuclei. Only a part of the dipion invariant mass distribution associated with the $γγ$-collisions can be visible as the cross section for the $A A \to A ρ^0 A$ reaction is very large. Differential distributions for two $ρ^0$ meson production in exclusive ultraperipheral, ultrarelativistic collisions via a double scattering mechanism are presented. The cross section for $γA \to ρ^0 A$ is parametrized based on a calculation from the literature. Smearing of $ρ^0$ masses is taken into account. The results of calculations are compared to experimental data obtained at RHIC and to the contribution of the two-photon mechanism. The double scattering mechanism populates larger $ρ^0 ρ^0$ invariant masses and larger rapidity distances between the two $ρ^0$ mesons compared to the $γγ$ fusion. It gives a significant contribution to the $A A \to A A π^+ π^- π^+ π^-$ reaction. Some observables related to charged pions are presented. The results of our calculation are compared with the STAR collaboration results for four charged pion production. While the shape in invariant mass of the four-pion system is very similar to the measured one, the predicted cross section constitutes only 20 \% of the measured one. \end{abstract}

Production of charmed meson-meson pairs at the LHC: Single- versus double-parton scattering mechanisms

We discuss hadroproduction of open charmed mesons ($D^0$, $D^{\pm}$, $D^{\pm}_{S}$) at the LHC energy $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV. The cross section for inclusive production of $c \bar c$ pairs is calculated within the $k_{\perp}$-factorization (or high-energy factorization) approach which effectively includes higher-order corrections. Results of the $k_{\perp}$-factorization approach are compared to NLO parton model predictions. The hadronization of charm quarks is included with the help of the Peterson fragmentation functions. Inclusive differential distributions in (pseudo)rapidity and transverse momentum for several charmed mesons are calculated and compared to recent results of the ALICE, ATLAS and LHCb experiments. We also take into consideration a mechanism of double charm (two pairs of $c \bar c$) production within a simple formalism of double-parton scattering (DPS). Surprisingly for LHC energies the DPS cross sections are found to be larger than those from the standard SPS mechanism. We compare our predictions for $DD$ meson-meson pair production with recent measurements of the LHCb collaboration, including correlation observables. Our calculations clearly confirm the dominance of DPS in the production of double charm, however some strength seems to be still lacking. Possible missing contribution from the so-called single-ladder-splitting DPS mechanism is also discussed.

Production of dijets with large rapidity separation: Mueller-Navelet mechanism versus double-parton scattering

We discuss hadroproduction of 4-jet final state at the LHC within the double-parton scattering (DPS) mechanism in the context of large-rapidity-distance jets. For planned and/or being currently performed high energy experiments this is the kinematical region where searches for BFKL signal are of the main interest. The DPS contributions are calculated in the LO collinear approach within the so-called factorized Ansatz. We show that the relative contribution of DPS is growing with respect to standard single-parton scattering (SPS) production of dijets and to the BFKL Mueller-Navelet (MN) jet mechanism at large rapidity distance between jets. This is consistent with recent studies of DPS effects in the case of double $D$ and double $J/\!ψ$ meson production. The calculated differential cross sections as a function of rapidity distance between the jets that are the most distant in rapidity are compared with recent results of LL and NLL BFKL calculations for the Mueller-Navelet jet production at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV. The DPS contribution is carefully studied for $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV and $\sqrt{s}$ = 14 TeV and in different ranges of jet transverse momenta.

Single- and central-diffractive production of open charm and bottom mesons at the LHC: theoretical predictions and experimental capabilities

In this approach one assumes that the pomeron has a well defined partonic structure, and that the hard process takes place in a pomeron-proton or proton-pomeron (single diffraction) or pomeron-pomeron (central diffraction) processes. Here, leading-order gluon-gluon fusion and quark-antiquark anihilation partonic subprocesses are taken into consideration, which are calculated within standard collinear approximation. Both pomeron flux factors as well as parton distributions in the pomeron are taken from the H1 Collaboration analysis of diffractive structure function and diffractive dijets at HERA. The extra corrections from subleading reggeon exchanges are explicitly calculated and are also taken into consideration. Several quark-level differential distributions are shown. The hadronization of charm and bottom quarks is taken into account by means of fragmentation function technique. Predictions for single- and central-diffractive production in the case of inclusive $D$ and $B$ mesons, as well as $D\bar D$ pairs are presented, including detector acceptance of the ATLAS, CMS and LHCb Collaborations. The experimental aspects of possible standard and dedicated measurements are carefully discussed.

Single-parton scattering versus double-parton scattering in the production of two $c \bar c$ pairs and charmed meson correlations at the LHC

We compare results of exact calculations of single parton scattering (SPS) and double parton scattering (DPS) for production of $c \bar c c \bar c$ and for $D$ meson correlations. The SPS calculations are performed in collinear approximation with exact matrix element for $g g \to c \bar c c \bar c$ and $q \bar q \to c \bar c c \bar c$ subprocesses. It is shown that the contribution of gluon-gluon subprocess is about factor 50 larger than that for quark-antiquark annihilation. The new results are compared with results of previous calculation with the approximate matrix element for $g g \to c \bar c c \bar c$ in the high-energy approximation. The cross section for the present exact calculation is bigger only at small invariant masses and small rapidity difference between two $c$ quarks (or two $\bar c$ antiquarks). We compare correlations in rapidities of two $c$ (or two $\bar c$) for DPS and SPS contributions. Finally we compare our predictions for $D$ mesons with recent results of the LHCb collaboration for invariant mass, rapidity distance between mesons and dimeson invariant mass. The predicted shapes are similar to the measured ones, however, some strength seems to be lacking. Our new calulations clearly confirm the dominance of DPS in the production of events with double charm.

The $ρ^0$ and Drell-Söding contributions to central exclusive production of $π^+ π^-$ pairs in proton-proton collisions at high energies

We present a study of the central exclusive $π^{+} π^{-}$ production via the photoproduction mechanism in nucleon-nucleon collisions. The photon-pomeron/reggeon and pomeron/reggeon-photon exchanges both for the $ρ^{0}$ resonance contribution and the Drell-Söding contribution are considered. The amplitudes for the processes are formulated in terms of vertices respecting the standard crossing and charge-conjugation relations of Quantum Field Theory. The coupling parameters of tensor pomeron and reggeon exchanges are fixed based on the H1 and ZEUS experimental data for the $γp \to ρ^{0} p$ reaction. We present first predictions of this mechanism for the $pp \to pp π^{+} π^{-}$ reaction being studied at COMPASS, RHIC, Tevatron, and LHC. We show the influence of the experimental cuts on the integrated cross section and on various differential distributions for outgoing particles. Distributions in rapidities and transverse momenta of outgoing protons and pions as well as correlations in azimuthal angle between them are presented. We compare the photoproduction contribution to $π^{+} π^{-}$ distributions with double pomeron/reggeon two-pion continuum. We discuss whether the high-energy central production of $ρ^{0}$ mesons could be selected experimentally.

$π^+ π^-$ and $π^0 π^0$ pair production in photon-photon and in ultraperipheral ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions

We discuss $γγ\to ππ$ reactions, starting from the two-pion threshold up to about $\sqrt{s_{γγ}}$ = 6 GeV. We include the dipion continuum due to pion exchange (for $π^+π^-$) and $ρ^\pm$ exchange (for $π^0π^0$) as well as the dipion $σ(600)$, $f_0(980)$ and $f_2(1270)$ s-channel resonances. We discuss also a possible contribution of less pronounced scalar resonances $f_0(1500)$ and $f_0(1710)$ as well as the tensor resonances $f'_2(1525)$, $f_2(1565)$ and $f_2(1950)$. We find that the inclusion of the spin-four $f_4(2050)$ resonant state improves the situation at $\sqrt{s_{γγ}} \approx$ 2 GeV. We estimate the relevant diphoton partial decay width to be $Γ_{f_4 \to γγ} \approx$ 0.7 keV. At higher energies, Brodsky-Lepage and hand-bag mechanisms are included in addition. We nicely describe the world data for $γγ\to ππ$ for the first time both for the total cross section and angular distributions. The cross section for the production of two-pions in ultraperipheral ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions is calculated in the impact parameter space Equivalent Photon Approximation (EPA). We obtain the nuclear cross section of 46.7 mb for $π^+π^-$ and 8.7 mb for $π^0π^0$ at the LHC energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}} =$ 3.5 TeV and minimal cut on pion transverse momentum $p_t>$ 0.2 GeV. Differential distributions in impact parameter, dipion invariant mass, single pion and dipion rapidity, pion transverse momentum as well as pion pseudorapidity are shown. The $γγ\to π^+ π^-$ subprocess constitutes a background to $A A \to A ρ^0 (\to π^+ π^-) A$ process.

Charmed mesons and leptons from semileptonic decays at the LHC

We discuss production of charmed mesons as well as electrons/muons from semileptonic decays of charm and bottom mesons in proton-proton collisions at the LHC. The cross section for inclusive production of $c \bar c$ and $b \bar b$ pairs is calculated in the framework of the $k_{\perp}$-factorization approach. Here, the KMR and Jung CCFM unintegrated gluon distribution functions are used. Theoretical uncertainties of the model related to the choice of renormalization and factorization scales as well as due to the quark mass are also discussed. The hadronization of charm and bottom quarks is included within the fragmentation functions technique. Inclusive differential distributions in transverse momentum of charmed mesons are presented and compared to recent results of the ALICE collaboration. Furthermore, we also consider production of different $D \bar D$ pairs in unique kinematics of forward rapidities of the LHCb experiment. Kinematical correlations in azimuthal angle $φ_{D\bar D}$ and invariant mass $M_{D \bar D}$ distributions are presented and compared to LHCb data. Furthermore, the semileptonic decays of charm and bottom mesons are done with the help of decay functions found by fitting recent semileptonic data obtained by the CLEO and BABAR collaborations. Inclusive differential distributions in transverse momentum of leptons for several kinematical regions are presented and compared to recent results of the ALICE and CMS collaborations.

Diffractive dissociation of gluons into heavy quark-antiquark pairs in proton-proton collisions

We discuss diffractive dissociation of gluons into heavy quark pairs. The particular mechanism is similar to the diffractive dissociation of virtual photons into quarks, which drives diffractive deep inelastic production of charm in the low-mass diffraction, or large $β$-region. There, it can be understood, with some reservations, in terms of a valence heavy quark content of the Pomeron. The amplitude for the $g p \to Q \bar Q p$ is derived in the impact parameter and momentum space. The cross section for single diffractive $p p \to Q \bar Q p X$ is calculated as a convolution of the elementary cross section and gluon distribution in the proton. Integrated cross section and the differential distributions in e.g. transverse momentum and rapidity of the charm and bottom quark and antiquark, as well as the quark-antiquark invariant mass are calculated for the nominal LHC energy for different unintegrated gluon distributions from the literature. The ratio of the bottom-to-charm cross sections are shown and discussed as a function of several kinematical variables.

Diffractive mechanisms in $pp \to pp π^{0}$ reaction at high energies

We present a study of exclusive production of $π^{0}$ meson in proton-proton collisions at high energies. Both diffractive bremsstrahlung (Drell-Hiida-Deck type model), photon-photon, photon-omega and photon-odderon exchange mechanisms are included in the calculation. The $π^{0}$-bremsstrahlung contribution dominates at large (forward, backward) pion rapidities and contributes at small $π^0 p$ invariant mass and could be therefore misinterpreted as the Roper resonance $N^{*}(1440)$. Large cross sections of the order of mb are predicted. We predict strong dependence of the slope in $t$ (squared four-momentum transfer between ingoing and outgoing proton) on the mass of the supplementary excited $π^{0} p$ system. At high energy and midrapidity, the photon-photon contribution dominates over the diffractive components, however, the corresponding cross section is rather small. The photon-odderon and odderon-photon contributions are included in addition and first estimates (upper limits) of their contributions are presented. We suggest a search for the odderon contribution at midrapidity and at $p_{\perp,π^{0}} \sim$ 0.5 GeV. Our predictions are ready for verification at LHC. The bremsstrahlung mechanisms discussed here contribute also to the $pp \to p(n π^{+})$ reaction. Both channels give a sizable contribution to the low-mass single diffractive cross section and must be included in extrapolating the measured experimental single diffractive cross section.

Double-scattering mechanism in exclusive $A A \to A A ρ^0 ρ^0$ reaction at ultrarelativistic collisions

We calculate, for the first time, differential distributions for double $ρ^0$ meson production in exclusive ultraperipheral, ultrarelativistic collisions via a double scattering mechanism. The calculations are done in impact parameter space. The cross section for $γA \to ρ^0 A$ is parametrized based on an existing calculation. Smearing of $ρ^0$ masses is taken into account. The results of our calculations are compared at the RHIC energy to the contribution of the two-photon mechanism discussed previously in the literature. The cross section for the double scattering mechanism is found to be an order of magnitude larger at $M_{ρρ} <$ 2 GeV and more than two orders of magnitude at $M_{ρρ} >$ 3 GeV, than that for the photon-photon mechanism. Compared to the two-photon mechanism the double scattering mechanism populates somewhat larger $ρ^0 ρ^0$ invariant masses and larger rapidity distances between the two $ρ^0$ mesons and gives a significant contribution to the $A A \to A A π^+ π^- π^+ π^-$ reaction. Some observables related to charged pions are presented too. We compare the results of our calculation with the STAR collaboration results on four charged pion production. While the shape in invariant mass of the four-pion system is very similar to the measured one, the predicted cross section constitutes only 20% of the measured one. We discuss a possibility of identifying the double scattering mechanism at the LHC.

Electromagnetic excitation of nuclei and neutron evaporation in ultrarelativistic ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions

We present a new approach for calculating electromagnetic excitation of nuclei as well as probabilities of emission and distributions of neutrons from decays of excited nuclear systems for ultrarelativistic, ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions. Excitation functions for $γ$ + Pb $\to$ Pb$^*$ are parametrized using physics-motivated components: excitation of giant resonances, quasi-deuteron absorption mechanism, excitation of nucleon resonances as well as high-energy dissociation of protons and neutrons. Neutron emission (up to 10 neutrons) from low-energy excitations of $^{208}$Pb is modelled in terms of the Hauser-Feshbach formalism. The probabilities of a given number of neutrons are calculated as a function of excitation energy in a Monte-Carlo code GEMINI. These functions are parametrized by smooth analytical functions. The results are compared to appropriate data for the $γ$ Pb $\to$ Pb$^*$ $\to$ k n reaction. As an example the approach is used for calculating electromagnetic excitation in UPC processes. Both single photon and double photon excitations are included and discussed. Topological cross sections with a given number of neutrons in forward and backward directions are calculated in the calculation at the LHC energies. Excitation functions are presented. The results of calculation are compared with SPS and more recent ALICE experimental data and good agreement is achieved.

Exclusive $p p \to p p π^{0}$ reaction at high energies

The amplitudes for the $p p \to p p π^{0}$ process applicable at high energy are discussed in detail. Both diffractive bremsstrahlung (Drell-Hiida-Deck--type model), photon-photon and photon-omega exchange mechanisms are included in the calculation. Large cross sections of the order of mb are predicted. The corresponding differential cross sections in rapidities and transverse momenta of outgoing protons and pions as well as relative azimuthal angle between outgoing protons are calculated for RHIC and LHC energies. The hadronic bremsstrahlung contributions dominate at large (forward, backward) pion rapidities. The diffractive nonresonant background contributes at small $π^0 p$ invariant mass and could be therefore misinterpreted as the Roper resonance. We predict strong dependence of the slope in $t$ (squared four-momentum transfer between ingoing and outgoing proton) on the mass of the supplementary excited $π^{0}p$ system. At high energies and midrapidities, the photon-photon contribution dominates over the diffractive components, however, the corresponding cross section is rather small. The photon-odderon and odderon-photon contributions are included in addition and first estimates (upper limits) of their contributions to rapidity and transverse momentum distribution of neutral pions are presented. We suggest a search for the odderon contribution at midrapidity and at $p_{\perp,π^{0}} \sim$ 0.5 GeV. Our predictions are ready for verification at RHIC and LHC. Exclusive central diffractive production of scalar and pseudoscalar mesons; tensorial vs. vectorial pomeron

We discuss consequences of the models of "tensorial pomeron" and "vectorial pomeron" for exclusive diffractive production of scalar and pseudoscalar mesons in proton-proton collisions. Diffractive production of $f_{0}(980)$, $f_{0}(1370)$, $f_{0}(1500)$, $η$, and $η'(958)$ mesons is discussed. Different pomeron-pomeron-meson tensorial coupling structures are possible in general. In most cases two lowest orbital angular momentum - spin couplings are necessary to describe experimental differential distributions. For $f_{0}(980)$ and $η$ production reggeon-pomeron, pomeron-reggeon, and reggeon-reggeon exchanges are included in addition, which seems to be necessary at relatively low energies. The theoretical results are compared with the WA102 experimental data. Correlations in azimuthal angle between outgoing protons, distributions in rapidities and transverse momenta of outgoing protons and mesons, in a special "glueball filter variable", as well as some two-dimensional distributions are presented. We discuss differences between results of the vectorial and tensorial pomeron models. We show that high-energy central production, in particular of pseudoscalar mesons, could provide crucial information on the spin structure of the soft pomeron.

Exclusive diffractive photon bremsstrahlung at high energies

We discuss the $p p \to p p γ$ reaction at the LHC. We consider diffractive classical bremsstrahlung mechanisms including effects of non point-like nature of protons. In addition, we take into account (vector meson)-pomeron, photon-pion as well as photon-pomeron exchange processes for the first time in the literature. The integrated diffractive bremsstrahlung cross section ($E_γ>100$ GeV) is only of the order of $μ$b. We try to identify regions of the phase space where one of the mechanisms dominates. The classical bremsstrahlung dominates at large forward/backward photon pseudorapidities, close to the pseudorapidities of scattered protons. In contrast, the photon-pomeron (pomeron-photon) mechanism dominates at midrapidities but the related cross section is rather small. In comparison the virtual-omega--rescattering mechanism contributes at smaller angles of photons (larger photon rapidities).

Exclusive diffractive photon bremsstrahlung at the LHC

We calculate differential distributions for the $p p \to p p γ$ reaction at the LHC energy $\sqrt{s} = 14$ TeV. We consider diffractive classical bremsstrahlung mechanisms including effects of non point-like nature of protons. In addition, we take into account (vector meson)-pomeron, photon-pion as well as photon-pomeron exchange processes for the first time in the literature. Predictions for the total cross section and several observables related to these processes e.g. differential distributions in pseudorapidities and transverse momenta of photons or protons are shown and discussed. The integrated diffractive bremsstrahlung cross section ($E_γ>100$ GeV) is only of the order of $μ$b. We try to identify regions of the phase space where one of the mechanisms dominates. In comparison the virtual-omega rescattering mechanism contributes at smaller angles of photons (larger photon rapidities). Photons in the forward/backward region can be measured by the Zero Degree Calorimeters (ZDCs) installed in experiments at the LHC while the midrapidity photons are difficult to measure (small cross section, small photon transverse momenta). Protons could be measured by ALFA detector (ATLAS) or TOTEM detector at CMS. The exclusivity could be checked with the help of main central detectors.

Open charm production at the LHC - $k_{t}$-factorization approach

Different models of unintegrated gluon distributions (UGDF) from the literature are used. The theoretical transverse momentum as well as (pseudo)rapidity distributions of charmed mesons are compared with recent experimental data of ATLAS, ALICE and LHCb collaborations. Only the calculation with Kimber-Martin-Ryskin (KMR) UGDF gives results comparable to experimental ones. All other popular models of UGDF significantly underpredict experimental data. Several sources of uncertainties of the theoretical predictions are also studied in details. In addition we discuss correlations between $D$ and $\bar D$ mesons. Good description of experimental distribution in invariant mass and in relative azimuthal angle between $D$ and $\bar D$ mesons is achieved for the KMR UGDF. Production of $c \bar c c \bar c$ in double-parton scattering within $k_{t}$-factorization approach -- meson-meson correlations

We discuss production of two pairs of $c \bar c$ in proton-proton collisions at the LHC. Both double-parton scattering (DPS) and single-parton scattering (SPS) contributions are included in the analysis. Each step of DPS is calculated within $k_t$-factorization approach, i.e. effectively including next-to-leading order corrections. The conditions how to identify the DPS contribution are presented. The discussed mechanism unavoidably leads to the production of pairs of mesons: $D_i D_j$ (each containing $c$ quarks) or $\bar D_i \bar D_j$ (each containing $\bar c$ antiquarks). We calculate corresponding production rates for different combinations of charmed mesons as well as some differential distribution for $(D^0 D^0$ + $\bar D^0 \bar D^0)$ production. Within large theoretical uncertainties the predicted DPS cross section is fairly similar to the cross section measured recently by the LHCb collaboration. The best description is obtained with the Kimber-Martin-Ryskin (KMR) unintegrated gluon distribution, which very well simulates higher-order corrections. The contribution of SPS, calculated in the high-energy approximation, turned out to be rather small. Finally, we emphasize significant contribution of DPS mechanism to inclusive charmed meson spectra measured recently by ALICE, ATLAS and LHCb.

QCD diffractive mechanism of exclusive $W^+W^-$ pair production at high energies

We discuss new diffractive mechanism of central exclusive production of $W^+W^-$ pairs in proton-proton collisions at the LHC. We include diagrams with intermediate virtual Higgs boson as well as quark box diagrams. Several observables related to this process are calculated. Predictions for the total cross section and differential distributions in $W$-boson rapidity and transverse momentum as well as $WW$ invariant mass are presented. We also show results for different polarization states of the final $W^{\pm}$ bosons. We compare the contribution of the $γγ\to W^+ W^-$ mechanism considered in the literature with the contribution of the diffractive mechanism through the $gg \to W^+ W^-$ subprocess for the different observables. The phase space integrated diffractive contribution when separated is only a small fraction of fb compared to 115.4 fb of the $γγ$-contribution without absorption. The latter contribution dominates at small four-momentum transfers squared in the proton lines and in a broad range of $W^+ W^-$ invariant masses. This offers a possibility of efficient searches for anomalous triple-boson ($γW W$) and quartic-boson ($γγWW$) couplings and testing models beyond the Standard Model. We discuss shortly also the $p p \to p p γγ$ process, where the box contribution is very similar to that for $W^+ W^-$ and compare our results with recent CDF data. Nice agreement has been achieved without additional free parameters.

The dependence of the cross section on parameters of recently proposed vector-like Technicolor model is studied. Characteristic features of the differential distributions are discussed. For not too large technipion masses the diphoton decay channel has the dominant branching fraction. This is also the main reason for an enhanced production of neutral technipions in $γγ$-fusion reaction. We discuss potential backgrounds of the QCD and QED origin to the $p p \to p p (\tildeπ^0 \to γγ)$ process at large invariant $γγ$ masses. We conclude that compared to inclusive case the signal-to-background ratio in the considered exclusive reaction is vary favorable which thereby could serve as a good probe for Technicolor dynamics searches at the LHC.

Spectator charge splitting of directed flow in heavy ion collisions

We estimate the effect of the spectator charge on distortion of single charged pion distributions as well as on azimuthal anisotropies in heavy ion collisions. A large electromagnetic effect on directed flow $v_1$ is predicted in good agreement with existing WA98 as well as RHIC data. This effect results in a splitting of $v_1$ for positive and negative pions. Detailed analysis of this phenomenon may provide new information on the collision dynamics.

Spectator induced electromagnetic effect on directed flow in heavy ion collisions

We estimate the electromagnetic effect of the spectator charge on azimuthal anisotropies observed in heavy ion collisions. For peripheral Pb+Pb reactions at the top energy of the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron, $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=17.3$ GeV, we predict this effect to bring very large distortions to the observed directed flow, $v_1$, of positive and negative pions emitted close to beam rapidity. The overall magnitude of this effect is comparable to values of $v_1$ reported by the WA98 experiment. We argue that also at lower rapidities, the spectator induced electromagnetic effect may result in the splitting of values of $v_1$ observed for positive and negative pions. Such a splitting is visible in the data reported by the STAR Collaboration from the RHIC Beam Energy Scan. Both effects are sensitive to the space-time scenario assumed for pion emission. Therefore, they bring new information on the collision dynamics.

Strong and Electromagnetic Forces in Heavy Ion Collisions

The interplay between the strong and electromagnetic force in high energy nucleus-nucleus collisions was studied experimentally and theoretically in our earlier works. This effect appeared to result in very large distortions in spectra of charged pions produced in the collision. It was also found to bring new, independent information on the space-time evolution of the non-perturbative process of particle production. In this paper, we present our new results on the influence of the spectator-induced electromagnetic force on spectra of charged particles produced in two different Pb-induced reactions. For the first time, we also address the topic of p+A collisions in view of obtaining information about their centrality and nuclear break-up, both subjects being of importance in the context of the new p+A data collected at the LHC.

Studying the Interplay of Strong and Electromagnetic Forces in Heavy Ion Collisions with NICA

In the following we stress the advantages of the NICA research programme in the context of studying the spectator-induced electromagnetic phenomena present in proton-nucleus and heavy ion collisions. We point at the specific interest of using these phenomena as a new, independent source of information on the space-time evolution of the reaction and of the non-perturbative process of particle production. We propose an extended series of measurements of well-defined observables to be performed in different types of nuclear reactions and in the whole range of collision energies available to NICA. We expect these measurements to bring very valuable new insight into the mechanism of non-perturbative strong interactions, complementary to the studies made at the SPS at CERN, RHIC at BNL, and the LHC.

Subleading processes in production of $W^+ W^-$ pairs in proton-proton collisions

We discuss many new subleading processes for inclusive production of $W^+ W^-$ pairs not included in the literature so far. We focus on photon-photon induced processes. We include elastic-elastic, elastic-inelastic, inelastic-elastic and inelastic-inelastic contributions. The inelastic photon distributions in the proton are calculated in two different ways: naive approach used already in the literature and using photon distributions by solving special evolution equation with photon being a parton in the proton. The results strongly depend on the approach used. We calculate also contributions with resolved photons. The diffractive components have similar characteristics as the photon-photon elastic-inelastic and inelastic-elastic mechanisms. The subleading contributions are compared with the well known $q \bar q$ and $g g$ as well as with double-parton scattering contributions. Predictions for the total cross section and differential distributions in $W$- boson rapidity and transverse momentum as well as $WW$ invariant mass are presented. The $γγ$ components constitute only about 1-2 % of the inclusive $W^+ W^-$ cross section but about 10 % at large $W^{\pm}$ transverse momenta, and are even comparable to the dominant $q \bar q$ component at large $M_{WW}$, i.e. are much larger than the often celebrated $g g \to W^+ W^-$ component. Its size is comparable to double parton scattering contribution. Only elastic-elastic, elastic-inelastic and inelastic-elastic contributions could be potentially measured to verify our predictions using forward proton detectors.

Diffractive pQCD mechanism of exclusive production of $W^+ W^-$ pairs in proton-proton collisions

We present a study of central exclusive production of $W^+W^-$ pairs in proton-proton collisions at the LHC. We compare the contribution of the $γγ\to W^+ W^-$ mechanism with a new mechanism of exclusive diffractive production through the $gg \to W^+ W^-$ subprocess with intermediate virtual Higgs boson and quark box diagrams. The amplitude for the latter process is expressed in terms of the off-diagonal unintegrated gluon distribution functions. Several observables related to this process are calculated. The phase space integrated diffractive contribution when separated is only a small fraction of fb compared to 115.4 fb of the $γγ$-contribution without absorption. This opens a possibility of efficient searches for anomalous boson $γW^+ W^-$ and $γγW^+ W^-$ couplings due to new physics beyond Standard Model.

Diffractive pQCD mechanisms of exclusive production of $b \bar b$ dijets and $W^+ W^-$ pairs in proton-proton collisions

We discuss central exclusive production of $W^+W^-$ pairs in proton-proton collisions at LHC. Predictions for the total cross section and differential distributions in transverse momentum of $W^{\pm}$ and $WW$ invariant mass are presented. We discuss both $γγ\to W^+ W^-$ mechanism as well as a new mechanism of exclusive diffractive production. The amplitude for the latter process is calculated in the Durham model. We compare the two (QED and QCD) types of contributions. The diffractive contribution is only a small fraction of fb compared to the $γγ$ contribution which is of the order of 100 fb. This opens a possibility of searches for anomalous four-boson $γγW^+ W^-$ coupling due to physics beyond Standard Model.

Diffractive production of c \bar c

At high-energies the gluon-gluon fusion is the dominant mechanism of c \bar c production. This process was calculated in the NLO collinear as well as in the kt-factorization approaches in the past. In this presentation we concentrate on production of c \bar c pairs including several subleading mechanisms. In this context we use MRST-QED parton distributions which include photon as a parton in the proton as well as elastic photon distributions calculated in the equivalent photon approximation. We present distributions in the c quark (c antiquark) rapidity and transverse momenta and compare them to the dominant gluon-gluon fusion contribution.valent photon approximation. We discuss also inclusive single and central diffractive processes using diffractive parton distribution found from the analysis of HERA diffractive data. As in the previous case we present distribution in c \bar c rapidity and transverse momentum. Next we present results for exclusive central diffractive mechanism discussed recently in the literature. We show corresponding differential distributions and compare them with corresponding distributions for single and central diffractive components. Finally we discuss production of two pairs of c \bar c within a simple formalism of double-parton scattering (DPS). Surprisingly very large cross sections, comparable to single-parton scattering (SPS) contribution, are predicted for LHC energies.

Diffractive production of charm quark/antiquark pairs at RHIC and LHC

We have discussed single and central diffractive production of $c \bar c$ pairs in the Ingelman-Schlein model. In these calculations we have included diffractive parton distributions obtained by the H1 collaboration at HERA and absorption effects neglected in some early calculations in the literature. The absorption effects which are responsible for the naive Regge factorization breaking cause that the cross section for diffractive processes is much smaller than that for the fully inclusive case, but could be measured at RHIC and LHC by imposing special condition on rapidity gaps. We discuss also different approaches to diffractive production of heavy quark/antiquark. The particular mechanism is similar to the diffractive dissociation of virtual photons into quarks, which drives diffractive deep inelastic production of charm in the low-mass diffraction, or large $β$-region.

Exclusive meson pair production in proton-proton collisions

We present a study of the exclusive production of meson pairs in the four-body $pp \to pp π^{+} π^{-}$, $pp K^{+}K^{-}$ reactions at high energies which constitute an irreducible background to resonance states (e.g. $ϕ$, $f_{2}(1270)$, $f_{0}(1500)$, $f_{2}'(1525)$, $χ_{c0}$). We consider central diffractive contribution mediated by Pomeron and Reggeon exchanges and new diffractive mechanism of emission of pions/kaons from the proton lines. We include absorption effects due to proton-proton interaction and pion/kaon rescattering. Predictions for the total cross section and differential distributions in pion/kaon rapidity and transverse momentum as well as two-pion/kaon invariant mass are presented for the RHIC, Tevatron and LHC colliders. Finally we consider a measurement of exclusive production of a scalar $χ_{c0}$ meson via $χ_{c0} \to π^{+} π^{-}$, $K^{+} K^{-}$ decay.

Exclusive production of meson pairs and resonances in proton-proton collisions

We report a study of the central exclusive production of $π^{+} π^{-}$ and $K^{+}K^{-}$ pairs in high energy hadron-hadron collisions. The amplitude is calculated in the Regge approach including both pomeron and secondary reggeon exchanges and absorption effects due to proton-proton interaction and $ππ$ ($KK$) rescattering. We discuss a measurement of exclusive production of a scalar $χ_{c0}$ meson via $χ_{c0} \to π^{+} π^{-}$, $K^{+} K^{-}$ decay. We find that the relative contribution of resonance states and the $ππ$ ($KK$) continuum strongly depend on the cut on pion (kaon) transverse momentum. We compare the results with the existing experimental data and present predictions for the RHIC, Tevatron and LHC colliders. We discuss also the $f_{2}(1270)$ meson production mediated by an effective tensor pomeron exchanges.

Exclusive scalar $f_0(1500)$ meson production

We evaluate differential distributions for exclusive scalar $f_0(1500)$ meson (glueball candidate) production. Both QCD diffractive, pion-pion meson exchange current (MEC) components as well as double-diffractive mechanism with intermediate pionic loop are calculated. The pion-pion component, which can be reliably calculated, dominates close to the threshold while the diffractive component may take over only for larger energies. At the moment only upper limit for the QCD-diffractive component can be obtained. The diffractive component is calculated based on the Khoze-Martin-Ryskin approach proposed for diffractive Higgs boson production. Different unintegrated gluon distribution functions (UGDFs) from the literature are used. Rather large cross sections (due to pion-pion fusion) are predicted for PANDA energies, where the gluonic mechanism is shown to be negligible.

New mechanisms of charm production

We discuss production of charm quarks, mesons as well as nonphotonic electrons in $pp$ scattering at RHIC. The distributions in rapidity and transverse momentum of charm and bottom quarks/antiquarks are calculated in the $k_t$-factorization approach. The hadronization of heavy quarks is done by means of fenomenological fragmentation functions and semileptonic decay functions are found by fitting semileptonic decay data. Good description of the inclusive data at large transverse momenta of electrons is obtained and a missing strength at small transverse momenta of electrons is found. In addition we discuss kinematical correlations between charged leptons from different mechanisms. Reactions initiated by purely QED $γ^*γ^*$-fusion in elastic and inelastic $pp$ collisions as well as diffractive mechanism of exclusive $c \bar c$ production are included. A good description of the dilepton invariant mass spectrum of the PHENIX collaboration is achieved. Distributions in the dilepton pair transverse momentum and in azimuthal angle between electron and positron are presented. A new mechanism of exclusive production of $c \bar c$ is discussed. Corresponding results are shown and the possibility of its identification is discussed. We discuss also production of two pairs of $c \bar c$ within a simple formalism of double-parton scattering (DPS). Very large cross sections, comparable to single-$c \bar c$ production, are predicted for LHC energies. Both total inclusive cross section as a function of energy and differential distributions are shown. We discuss a perspective how to identify the double scattering contribution.

Production of digluon and quark-antiquark dijets in central exclusive processes

We discuss exclusive central production of Higgs boson, quark-antiquark and digluon dijets. Some differential distributions are shown and disussed. Irreducible leading-order $b \bar b $ background to Higgs production is calculated. The signal-to-background ratio is shown and improvements are suggested by imposing cuts on $b$ ($\bar b$) transverse momenta and rapidities. We disuss also gluonic dijet production. Here we use rather reggeon-reggeon-gluon vertices. We discuss briefly also a new mechanism of emission of gluons from different $t$-channel gluons (reggeons). The latter contribution turned out to be rather small. When gluons are missidentified as $b$ or $\bar b$ jets the latter contribution constitutes a reducible but large contribution to exclusive Standard Model Higgs boson.

Production of two $c \bar c$ pairs in gluon-gluon scattering in high energy proton-proton collisions

We calculate cross sections for $g g \to Q \bar Q Q \bar Q$ in the high-energy approximation in the mixed (longitudinal momentum fraction, impact parameter) and momentum space representations. Besides the total cross section as a function of subsystem energy also differential distributions (in quark rapidity, transverse momentum, $Q Q$, $Q \bar Q$ invariant mass) are presented. The elementary cross section is used to calculate production of $(c \bar c) (c \bar c)$ in single-parton scattering (SPS) in proton-proton collisions. We present integrated cross section as a function of proton-proton center of mass energy as well as differential distribution in $M_{(c \bar c)(c \bar c)}$. The results are compared with corresponding results for double-parton scattering (DPS) discussed recently in the literature. We find that the considered SPS contribution to $(c \bar c)(c \bar c)$ production is at high energy ($\sqrt{s} >$ 5 TeV) much smaller than that for DPS contribution.

The $γγ\to J/ψJ/ψ$ reaction and the $J/ψJ/ψ$ pair production in exclusive ultraperipheral ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions

We calculate the cross section for the $γγ\to J/ψJ/ψ$ process. Two mechanisms are considered: box (two-loop) diagrams of the order of $O(α_{em}^2 α_s^2)$ and two-gluon exchange of the order of $O(α_{em}^2 α_s^4)$. The first mechanism is calculated in the heavy-quark non-relativistic approximation while the second case we also include the effects of quantum motion of quarks in the bound state. The box contribution dominates at energies close to the threshold ($W <$ 15 GeV) while the two-gluon mechanism takes over at $W >$ 15 GeV. Including the bound-state wave function effects for the two-gluon exchange mechanism gives a cross section 0.1 - 0.4 pb, substantially smaller than that in the non-relativistic limit (0.4 - 1.6 pb). We also find a strong infrared sensitivity which manifests itself in a rather strong dependence on the mass for the $t$-channel gluons. The elementary cross section is then used in the Equivalent Photon Approximation (EPA) in the impact parameter space to calculate the cross section for $^{208}Pb+^{208}Pb \to ^{208}Pb + J/ψJ/ψ+ ^{208}Pb$ reaction. Distributions in rapidity of the $J/ψJ/ψ$ pair and invariant mass of the pair are shown.

$pp \to pp K^{+}K^{-}$ reaction at high energies

We evaluate differential distributions for the four-body $p p \to p p K^{+} K^{-}$ reaction at high energies which constitutes an irreducible background to three-body processes $p p \to p p M$, where $M=ϕ$, $f_{2}(1275)$, $f_{0}(1500)$, $f_{2}'(1525)$, $χ_{c0}$. We consider central diffractive contribution mediated by Pomeron and Reggeon exchanges as well as completely new mechanism of emission of kaons from the proton lines. We include absorption effects due to proton-proton interaction and kaon-kaon rescattering. We compare our results with measured cross sections for the CERN ISR experiment. We make predictions for future experiments at RHIC, Tevatron and LHC. Differential distributions in invariant two-kaon mass, kaon rapidities and transverse momenta of kaons are presented. Two-dimensional distribution in $(y_{K^+}, y_{K^-})$ is particularly interesting. The higher the incident energy, the higher preference for the same-hemisphere emission of kaons. We find that the kaons from the new mechanism of emission directly from proton lines are produced rather forward and backward but the corresponding cross section is rather small. The processes considered here constitute a sizeable contribution to the total proton-proton cross section as well as to kaon inclusive cross section. We consider a measurement of exclusive production of scalar $χ_{c0}$ meson in the proton-proton collisions via $χ_{c0} \to K^{+}K^{-}$ decay. The corresponding amplitude for exclusive central diffractive $χ_{c0}$ meson production is calculated within the $k_{t}$-factorization approach. The influence of kinematical cuts on the signal-to-background ratio is discussed.

Central exclusive quark-antiquark dijet and Standard Model Higgs boson production in proton-(anti)proton collisions

We consider the central exclusive production of $q\bar{q}$ pairs and Higgs boson at proton-proton collisions at LHC. The amplitude for the process is derived within the $k_{\perp}$-factorization approach and considered in different kinematical asymptotics, in particular, in the important high quark transverse momenta and massless quark limits. Quark helicity and spin-projection amplitudes in two different frames are shown in extenso. Rapidity distributions, quark jet $p_{\perp}$ distributions, invariant $q\bar{q}$ mass distributions, angular azimuthal correlations between outgoing protons and jets are presented. Exclusive production of $ω$ meson in proton-proton collisions at high energies

First we calculate cross section for the $γp \to ωp$ reaction from the threshold to very large energies. At low energies the pion exchange is the dominant mechanism. At large energies the experimental cross section can be well described within the $k_{t}$-factorization approach by adjusting light-quark constituent mass. Next we calculate differential distributions for the $p p \to p p ω$ reaction at RHIC, Tevatron and LHC energies for the first time in the literature. We consider photon-pomeron (pomeron-photon), photon-pion (pion-photon) as well as diffractive hadronic bremsstrahlung mechanisms. The latter are included in the meson/reggeon exchange picture with parameters fixed from the known phenomenology. Interesting rapidity distributions are predicted. The hadronic bremsstrahlung contributions dominate at large (forward, backward) rapidities. At small energies the photon-pomeron contribution is negligible compared to the bremsstrahlung contributions. It could be, however, easily identified at large energies at midrapidities. Absorptions effects are included and discussed. Our predictions are ready for verification at RHIC and LHC.

Exclusive production of large invariant mass pion pairs in ultraperipheral ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions

The cross section for exclusive production of $π^+ π^-$ and $π^0 π^0$ meson pairs in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions is calculated for LHC energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}} =$ 3.5 TeV taking into account photon-photon mechanism. We concentrate on the production of large two-pion invariant masses where the mechanism of the elementary $γγ\to ππ$ process is not fully understood. In order to include a size of nuclei we perform calculation in the impact-parameter equivalent photon approximation (EPA). Realistic charge densities are used to calculate charged form factor of $^{208}$Pb nucleus and to generate photon fluxes associated with ultrarelativistic heavy ions. Sizeable cross sections are obtained that can be measured at LHC. The cross section for elementary $γγ\to ππ$ is calculated in the framework of pQCD Brodsky-Lepage (BL) mechanism with the distribution amplitude used to descibe recent data of the BABAR collaboration on pion transition form factor, using hand-bag mechanism advocated to describe recent Belle data as well as $t$ and $u$-channel meson/reggeon exchanges. Exclusive production of vector mesons in $γp$ and $p p$ collisions

The dominant mechanism for the central exclusive production of vector meson in $p p$ and $p \bar p$ collisions is the $γ$ $I P$ fusion. As a building block for the pp reaction, the amplitude for photoproduction $ γp \to V p $ is calculated in a pQCD $k_{T}$- factorization approach. We will present results for several vector mesons: $ρ$, $ω$, $ϕ$, $J/Ψ$ and $Υ$. The total cross section for diffractive mesons production as a function of energy and photon virtuality is calculated. We will present dependence on the mass of the quark for light mesons. The results for $ γp \to V p $ photoproduction depend on the model of the meson wave function. We compare our results with a HERA data for photon-proton collisions. Heavy quark production at collider energies: some selected topics

We discuss production of charm quarks and mesons as well as nonphotonic electrons in $pp$ scattering at RHIC. The distributions in rapidity and transverse momentum of charm and bottom quarks/antiquarks are calculated in the $k_t$-factorization approach. The hadronization of heavy quarks is done by means of fenomenological fragmentation functions. Good description of the inclusive data at large transverse momenta of electrons is obtained and a missing strength at small transverse momenta of electrons is found. Furthermore we discuss kinematical correlations between charged leptons from semileptonic decays of open charm/bottom, leptons produced in the Drell-Yan mechanism as well as some other mechanisms not included so far in the literature. When calculating the Drell-Yan processes we include transverse momenta of $q$ and $\bar q$, using the Kwieciński parton distributions. Reactions initiated by purely QED $γ^*γ^*$-fusion in elastic and inelastic $pp$ collisions as well as diffractive mechanism of exclusive $c \bar c$ production are included. Inclusive and exclusive diffractive production of dilepton pairs in proton-proton collisions at high energies

We calculate for the first time cross sections for single and central diffractive as well as exclusive diffractive production of dilepton pairs in proton-proton collisions. Several differential distributions are shown. The inclusive diffractive processes are calculated using diffractive parton distributions extracted from the analysis of diffractive structure function and dijet production at HERA. We find that the inclusive single-diffractive Drell-Yan process is by about 2 orders of magnitude smaller than ordinary Drell-Yan process. The central-diffractive processes are smaller by one order of magnitude compared to single-diffractive ones. We consider also exclusive production of dilepton pairs. The exclusive photon-pomeron (pomeron-photon) process constitutes a background to the QED photon-photon process proposed to be used for controlling luminosity at LHC. Both processes are compared then in several differential distributions. We find a region of the phase space where the photon-pomeron or pomeron-photon contributions can be larger than the photon-photon one.

Kinematical correlations of dielectrons from semileptonic decays of heavy mesons and Drell-Yan processes at BNL RHIC

We discuss kinematical correlations between charged leptons from semileptonic decays of open charm/bottom, leptons produced in the Drell-Yan mechanism as well as some other mechanisms not included so far in the literature in proton-proton scattering at BNL RHIC. The distributions of charm and bottom quarks/antiquarks are calculated in the framework of the $k_t$-factorization approach. For this calculation we use the Kwieciński unintegrated parton distributions. The hadronization of heavy quarks is done by means of Peterson et al. fragmentation function. We use semileptonic decay functions found by fitting recent semileptonic data obtained by the CLEO and BABAR collaborations. The Drell-Yan processes were calculated including transverse momenta of quarks and antiquarks, also using the Kwieciński parton distributions. We have also took into consideration reactions initiated by purely QED $γ^*γ^*$-fusion in elastic and inelastic pp collisions as well as recently proposed diffractive mechanism of exclusive charm-anticharm production. The contribution of the later mechanism is rather small. We get good description of the dilepton invariant mass spectrum measured recently by the PHENIX collaboration and present predictions for the dilepton pair transverse momentum distribution as well as distribution in azimuthal angle between electron and positron.

Measurement of exclusive production of scalar $χ_{c0}$ meson in proton-(anti)proton collisions via $χ_{c0} \to π^{+}π^{-}$ decay

We consider a measurement of exclusive production of scalar $χ_{c}(0^{++})$ meson in the proton-proton collisions at LHC and RHIC and in the proton-antiproton collisions at the Tevatron via $χ_{c0} \to π^{+}π^{-}$ decay. The corresponding amplitude for exclusive double-diffractive $χ_{c0}$ meson production was obtained within the $k_{t}$-factorization approach including virtualities of active gluons and the corresponding cross section is calculated with unintegrated gluon distribution functions (UGDFs) known from the literature. The four-body $p p \to p p π^+ π^-$ reaction constitutes an irreducible background to the exclusive $χ_{c0}$ meson production. We calculate several differential distributions for $pp(\bar{p}) \to pp(\bar{p})χ_{c0}$ process including absorptive corrections. The influence of kinematical cuts on the signal-to-background ratio is investigated. Corresponding experimental consequences are discussed.

New contributions to central exclusive production of dijets in proton-(anti)proton collisions

We consider central exclusive production of $gg$ dijets in proton-proton (proton-antiproton) collisions at LHC and Tevatron for different intermediate and final gluon polarisations. The amplitude for the process is derived within the $k_\perp$-factorization approach (with both the standard QCD and the Lipatov's effective three-gluon verticies) and is considered in various kinematical asymptotia, in particular, in the important limit of high-$p_\perp$ jets. Compared to earlier works we include emissions of gluons from different gluonic $t$-channel lines as well as emission of quark-antiquark dijets. Rapidity distributions, gluon jet $p_\perp$ distributions and invariant dijet mass distributions are presented. We explore the competition of the standard diagram with both jets emitted from a single $t$-channel gluon and the one with the emission from both $t$-channel gluons. The second mechanism requires a special treatment. We propose two different approaches. Including special kinematics and using properties of off-diagonal gluons at small $x$ and $ξ$ we arrive to correlations in two-dimensional distributions in rapidity of one and second jet. We find that the second contribution is much smaller than that known from the literature. The digluon production constitutes an important background to exclusive Higgs production.

Production of two $c \bar c$ pairs in double-parton scattering

We discuss production of two pairs of $c \bar c$ within a simple formalism of double-parton scattering (DPS). Surprisingly very large cross sections, comparable to single-parton scattering (SPS) contribution, are predicted for LHC energies. Both total inclusive cross section as a function of energy and differential distributions for $\sqrt{s}$ are shown. We discuss a perspective how to identify the double scattering contribution.

Subdominant terms in the production of $c \bar c$ pairs in proton-proton collisions

At high-energies the gluon-gluon fusion is the dominant mechanism of $c \bar c$ production. This process was calculated in the NLO collinear as well as in the k$_t$-factorization approaches in the past. We show that the present knowledge of gluon distributions does not allow to make a precise predictions for $c \bar c$ production at LHC, in particular at forward rapidities. In this paper we study production of $c \bar c$ pairs including several subleading mechanisms. This includes: $gg \to Q \bar Q$, $γg \to Q \bar Q$, $g γ\to Q \bar Q$, $γγ\to Q \bar Q$. In this context we use MRST-QED parton distributions which include photon as a parton in the proton as well as elastic photon distributions calculated in the equivalent photon approximation. We present distributions in the $c$ quark ($\bar c$ antiquark) rapidity and transverse momenta and compare them to the dominant gluon-gluon fusion contribution. We discuss also inclusive single and central diffractive processes using diffractive parton distribution found from the analysis of HERA diffractive data. As in the previous case we present distribution in $c$ ($\bar c$) rapidity and transverse momentum. Finally we present results for exclusive central diffractive mechanism discussed recently in the literature. We show corresponding differential distributions and compare them with corresponding distributions for single and central diffractive components.

Diffractive exclusive production of heavy quark pairs at high energy proton-proton collisions

We discuss exclusive double diffractive (EDD) production of heavy quark - heavy antiquark pairs at high energies. Differential distributions for $c \bar c$ at $\sqrt{s}$ = 1.96 GeV and for $b \bar b$ at $\sqrt{s}$ = 14 TeV are shown and discussed. Irreducible leading-order $b \bar b $ background to Higgs production is calculated for the first time in several kinematical variables. The signal-to-background ratio is shown and several improvements are suggested.

Double -- photon exclusive processes with heavy quark -- heavy antiquark pairs in high-energy Pb-Pb collisions at LHC

The cross section for exclusive heavy quark and heavy antiquark pair ($Q \bar Q$) production in peripheral ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions is calculated for the LHC energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.5 TeV. Here we consider only processes with photon--photon interactions and omit diffractive contributions. We present results in the impact parameter equivalent photon approximation (EPA) and compare some of them with results obtained by exact calculations of the Feynman diagrams in the momentum space. We include both $Q \bar Q$, $Q \bar Q g$ and $Q \bar Q q \bar q$ final states as well as photon single-resolved components. Realistic charge densities in nuclei were taken in the calculation. The different components give contributions of the same order of magnitude to the nuclear cross section. The cross sections found here are smaller than those for the diffractive photon-pomeron mechanism and larger than diffractive pomeron-pomeron discussed in the literature.

Exclusive photoproduction of $ϕ$ meson in $γp \to ϕp$ and $p p \to p ϕp$ reactions

The amplitude for $γp \to ϕp$ is calculated in a pQCD $k_{T}$ - factorization approach. The total cross section for this process is compared with HERA data. Total cross section, as a function of photon-proton energy and photon virtuality, is calculated. We also discuss the ratio of $σ_{L}$ / $σ_{T}$ and the dependence on the mass of the strange quark. The amplitude for $γp \to ϕp$ is used to predict the cross section for exclusive photoproduction of $ϕ$ meson in proton-proton collisions. Absorption effects are included. The results for RHIC, Tevatron and LHC energies are presented.

Exclusive production of $ρ^0 ρ^0$ pairs in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions

We disuss exclusive electromagnetic production of two neutral $ρ^0$~mesons and show the predictions for the $AA \to AA ρ^0 ρ^0$ reactions for gold-gold collisions at the energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV (RHIC) and for lead-lead collisions at the energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.5 TeV (LHC). The elementary cross section is calculated with the help of the vector-dominance-model (VDM)-Regge approach which usually very well describes the experimental data at large $γγ$ energy. The low-energy $γγ\to ρ^0 ρ^0$ cross section is parametrized. The cross section for nuclear process is calculated by means of the equivalent photon approximation (EPA). We compare the results with realistic charge density with the results for monopole form factor.

Polarisation effects in the central exclusive $χ_c$ production and the $J/ψ$ angular distributions

We discuss exclusive elastic double diffractive axial-vector $χ_c(1^+)$ and tensor $χ_c(2^+)$ mesons production for different meson polarisations in proton-(anti)proton collisions at the Tevatron energy. The amplitude for the process is derived within the $k_t$-factorisation approach using unintegrated gluon distributions (UGDFs). Differential cross sections for different $χ_c$ polarisations are calculated. Angular distributions of $J/ψ$ meson from the radiative $χ_c(1^+,2^+)$ decays are derived. Prospects for experimental selection of different spin states of $χ_c$ mesons are discussed.

Presented production rates for open charm and bottom were estimated by a detailed analysis of so-called nonphotonic electrons. Exclusive $pp \to pp π^{+}π^{-}$ reaction: from the threshold to LHC

We evaluate differential distributions for the four-body $p p \to p p π^+ π^-$ reaction which constitutes a irreducible background to three-body processes $p p \to p p M$, where $M$ are a broad resonances in the $π^+ π^-$ channel, e.g. $M=σ, ρ^{0}, f_{0}(980), f_{2}(1275), f_{0}(1500)$. We include both double-diffractive contribution (both pomeron and reggeon exchanges) as well as the pion-pion rescattering contribution. The first process dominates at higher energies and small pion-pion invariant masses while the second becomes important at lower energies and higher pion-pion invariant masses. The amplitude(s) is(are) calculated in the Regge approach. We compare our results with measured cross sections for the ISR experiments at CERN. We make predictions for future experiments at PANDA, RHIC, Tevatron and LHC energies. Differential distributions in effective two-pion mass, pion rapidities and transverse momenta of pions are presented. The two-dimensional distribution in $(y_{π^+}, y_{π^-})$ is particularly interesting. The higher the incident energy, the higher preference for the same-hemisphere emission of pions. The processes considered constitute a sizeable contribution to the total nucleon-nucleon cross section as well as to pion inclusive cross section.

Exclusive double-diffractive production of open charm in proton-proton and proton-antiproton collisions

We calculate differential cross sections for exclusive double diffractive (EDD) production of open charm in proton-proton and proton-antiproton collisions. Sizeable cross sections are found. The EDD contribution constitutes about 1 % of the total inclusive cross section for open charm production. A few differential distributions are shown and discussed. The EDD contribution falls faster both with transverse momentum of the $c$ quark/antiquark and the $c \bar c$ invariant mass than in the inclusive case.

Kinematical correlations: from RHIC to LHC

Kinematical correlations between outgoing partons (elementary particles) are discussed in the framework of $k_t$-factorization. Different unintegrated gluon distributions are used. I discuss correlations between charm-anticharm, jets, photon and jet, and between leptons from semileptonic decays of heavy quarks as well as leptons produced in the Drell-Yan mechanism. Both correlations in azimuth as well as in the length of transverse momenta are shown. General conclusions are drawn.

Dijet and photon-jet correlations in proton-proton collisions at RHIC

We discuss correlations in azimuthal angle as well as correlations in two-dimensional space of transverse momenta of two jets as well as photon and jet. Some $k_t$-factorization subprocesses are included for the first time in the literature. Different unintegrated gluon/parton distributions are used in the $k_t$-factorization approach. The results depend on UGDF/UPDF used. The collinear NLO $2 \to 3$ contributions dominate over $k_t$-factorization cross section at small relative azimuthal angles as well as for asymmetric transverse momentum configurations.

The contribution of $γ^* γ^* \to η'$ fusion is estimated. The distributions in the Feynman $x_F$ (or rapidity), transferred four-momenta squared between initial and final protons ($t_1$, $t_2$) and azimuthal angle difference between outgoing protons ($Φ$) are calculated and discussed. Direct Photon Production in $pp$ and $p \bar p$ Collisions at High Energies

The invariant cross sections for direct photon production in hadron-hadron collisions are calculated for several initial energies (SPS, ISR, S$p \bar p$S, RHIC, Tevatron, LHC) including initial parton transverse momenta within the formalism of unintegrated parton distributions (UPDF). Kwieciński UPDFs provide very good description of all world data, especially at SPS and ISR energies. Inclusion of the QCD evolution effects and especially their effect on initial parton transverse momenta allowed to solve the long-standing problem of understanding the low energy and low transverse momentum data.

Pion and Kaon Production in Nucleon - Nucleon Collisions

Inclusive cross section for pion production in proton - proton collisions are calculated based on unintegrated parton distribution functions (uPDFs). In addition to purely gluonic terms the present approach includes also quark degrees of freedom. Phenomenological fragmentation functions from the literature are used. The new mechanisms are responsible for $π^+$ - $π^-$ asymmetry. In contrast to standard collinear approach, application of 2 $\to$ 1 $k_t$ - factorization approach can be extended towards much lower transverse momenta, both at mid and forward rapidity region. The results of the calculation are compared with SPS and RHIC data.

Unintegrated parton distributions and pion production in pp collisions at RHIC's energies

We compare results of $2 \to 1$ $k_t$-factorization approach with Kwieciński unintegrated parton distributions and the standard collinear factorization approach at RHIC and slightly smaller energies. Our approach contains only one free parameter responsible for internal parton motion in nucleons. In contrast to recent works in the literature our $k_t$-factorization approach includes also quark degrees of freedom in addition to purely gluonic terms. Both mid and forward rapidity regions are considered. We discuss uncertainties due to fragmentation functions. In general, the $k_t$-factorization approach gives a better description of the $p_t \sim$ 1 -- 4 GeV region both at mid and forward rapidity regions. Our approach leads to asymmetry in the production of $π^+$ and $π^-$, very similar to the one observed very recently by the BRAHMS collaboration.
