Coherent coupling of two remote magnonic resonators mediated by superconducting circuits

We demonstrate microwave-mediated distant magnon-magnon coupling on a superconducting circuit platform, incorporating chip-mounted single-crystal Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ (YIG) spheres. Coherent level repulsion and dissipative level attraction between the magnon modes of the two YIG spheres are demonstrated. The former is mediated by cavity photons of a superconducting resonator, and the latter is mediated by propagating photons of a coplanar waveguide. Our results open new avenues towards exploring integrated hybrid magnonic networks for coherent information processing on a quantum-compatible superconducting platform.

Unreliability of two-band model analysis of magnetoresistivities in unveiling temperature-driven Lifshitz transition

Recently, anomalies in the temperature dependences of the carrier density and/or mobility derived from analysis of the magnetoresistivities using the conventional two-band model have been used to unveil intriguing temperature-induced Lifshitz transitions in various materials. For instance, two temperature-driven Lifshitz transitions were inferred to exist in the Dirac nodal-line semimetal ZrSiSe, based on two-band model analysis of the Hall magnetoconductivities where the second band exhibits a change in the carrier type from holes to electrons when the temperature decreases below T = 106 K and a dip is observed in the mobility versus temperature curve at T = 80 K. Here, we revisit the experiments and two-band model analysis on ZrSiSe. We show that the anomalies in the second band may be spurious, because the first band dominates the Hall magnetoconductivities at T > 80 K, making the carrier type and mobility obtained for the second band from the two-band model analysis unreliable. That is, care must be taken in interpreting these anomalies as evidences for temperature-driven Lifshitz transitions. Our skepticism on the existence of such phase transitions in ZrSiSe is further supported by the validation of the Kohler's rule for magnetoresistances at temperatures below 180 K. This work showcases potential issues in interpreting anomalies in the temperature dependence of the carrier density and mobility derived from the analysis of magnetoconductivities or magnetoresistivities using the conventional two-band model.

Rapid Doubling of the Critical Current of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ Coated Conductors for Viable High-Speed Industrial Processing

We demonstrate that 3.5-MeV oxygen irradiation can markedly enhance the in-field critical current of commercial 2nd generation superconducting tapes with an exposure time of just one second per 0.8 cm2. The speed demonstrated here is now at the level required for an industrial reel-to-reel post-processing. The irradiation is made on production line samples through the protective silver coating and does not require any modification of the growth process. From TEM imaging, we identify small clusters as the main source of increased vortex pinning.

The CeMIn5 (M = Rh, Ir and Co) System and the Single Energy Scale Model of Metamagnetism

For a decade and a half, CeCoIn$_5$ and related alloys have served as a rich playground to explore the interplay between magnetism and unconventional superconductivity. Despite this extended study, the presence/absence of metamagnetism (MM) in this ternary system remains as an unresolved issue. Here we show that the linear and non-linear magnetic response in CeMIn$_5$ (M = Rh, Ir and Co) can be understood within the context of the recently proposed single energy scale (SES) model of MM. New measurements of the third-order susceptibility, $χ_3$, in CeCoIn$_5$ are presented and together with the known systematics of the linear susceptibility in all three compounds, are shown to be consistent with the SES model. Predictions are made for the MM critical field in CeCoIn$_5$ and the fifth-order susceptibility, $χ_5$.

Study of antiferromagnetic and nematic phase transitions in $BaFe_2(As_{1-x}P_x)_2$ by AC micro-calorimetry and SQUID magnetometry

We study the antiferromagnetic (AFM) and structural phase transitions in single crystal $BaFe_2(As_{1-x}P_x)_2$ $(x=0, 0.3)$ at temperatures $T_N$ and $T_S$, respectively, by high resolution ac microcalorimetry and SQUID magnetometry. The specific heat measurements of both as grown and annealed $BaFe_2As_2$ displays a sharp peak at the AFM/Structural transitions. A kink in the entropy of annealed $BaFe_2As_2$ gives evidence for splitting of the two transitions by approximately 0.5K. No additional features could be identified in the specific heat of both $BaFe_2As_2$ and $BaFe_2(As_{0.7}P_{0.3})_2$ in the temperature regions around $T^*$ > $T_S$ where torque measurements [S. Kasahara et al., Nature 486, 382 (2012)] had revealed the "true" nematic phase transition, indicating that the behavior at $T^*$ does not represent a 2nd order phase transition, and that the phase transition of $BaFe_2(As_{1-x}P_x)_2$ into the orthorhombic phase does occur at $T_S$.

A single-solenoid pulsed-magnet system for single-crystal scattering studies

We present a pulsed-magnet system that enables x-ray single-crystal diffraction in addition to powder and spectroscopic studies with the magnetic field applied on or close to the scattering plane. The apparatus consists of a single large-bore solenoid, cooled by liquid nitrogen. A second independent closed-cycle cryostat is used for cooling samples near liquid helium temperatures. Pulsed magnetic fields close to $\sim 30$ T with a zero-to-peak-field rise time of $\sim$2.9 ms are generated by discharging a 40 kJ capacitor bank into the magnet coil. The unique characteristic of this instrument is the preservation of maximum scattering angle ($\sim 23.6^\circ$) on the entrance and exit sides of the magnet bore by virtue of a novel double-funnel insert. This instrument will facilitate x-ray diffraction and spectroscopic studies that are impractical, if not impossible, to perform using split-pair and narrow-opening solenoid magnets, and offers a practical solution for preserving optical access in future higher-field pulsed magnets.

Fermi-surface induced modulation in an optimally doped YBCO superconductor

We have observed a Fermi-surface (FS) induced lattice modulation in a YBCO superconductor with a wavevector along CuO chains, {\it i.e.} ${\bf q}_1$=(0,$δ$,0). The value of $δ\sim0.21$ is twice the Fermi wavevector ($2{\bf k}_F$) along {\bf b*} connecting nearly nested FS `ridges'. The ${\bf q}_1$ modulation exists only within O-vacancy-ordered islands (characterized by ${\bf q}_0$=$(\frac14,0,0))$ and persists well above and below $T_c$. Our results are consistent with the presence of a FS-induced charge-density wave.
