Coexistence of phononic Weyl, nodal line, and threefold excitations in chalcopyrite CdGeAs$_{2}$ and associated thermoelectric properties

Realization of topologically protected quantum states leads to unprecedented opportunities for fundamental science and device applications. Here, we demonstrate the coexistence of multiple topological phononic states and calculate the associated thermoelectric properties of a chalcopyrite material CdGeAs$_2$ using first-principles theoretical modeling. CdGeAs$_{2}$ is a direct bandgap semiconductor with a bandgap of $0.65$ eV. By analysing the phonon spectrum and associated symmetries, we show the presence of nearly isolated Weyl, nodal line, and threefold band crossings in CdGeAs$_2$. Specifically, the two triply degenerate points (TDPs) identified on the $k_{z}$ axis are formed by the optical phonons bands 7, 8, and 9 with type-II energy dispersion. These TDPs form a time reversal pair and are connected by a straight nodal line with zero Berry phase. The TDPs formed between bands 14, 15, and 16 exhibit type-I crossings and are connected through the open straight nodal line. Our transport calculations show a large thermopower exceeding $\sim$500 and $200$ $\rm μV/K$ for the hole and electron carriers, respectively, above 500 K with a carrier doping of 10$^{18}$ cm$^{-3}$. The large thermopower in $p$-type CdGeAs$_{2}$ is a consequence of the sharp density of states appear from the presence of a heavy hole band at the $Γ$ point. We argue that the presence of topological states in the phonon bands could lead to low lattice thermal conductivity and drive a high figure-of-merit in CdGeAs$_{2}$.

Behavior of gapped and ungapped Dirac cones in an antiferromagnetic topological metal, SmBi

We studied the behavior of nontrivial Dirac fermion states in an antiferromagnetic metal SmBi using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). The experimental results exhibit multiple Fermi pockets around $\overlineΓ$ and $\overline{M}$ points along with a band inversion in the spectrum along the $\overlineΓ$-$\overline{M}$ line consistent with the density functional theory results. In addition, ARPES data reveal Dirac cones at $\overlineΓ$ and $\overline{M}$ points within the energy gap of the bulk bands. The Dirac cone at $\overline{M}$ exhibit a distinct Dirac point and is intense in the high photon energy data while the Dirac cone at $\overlineΓ$ is intense at low photon energies. Employing ultra-high-resolution ARPES, we discover destruction of a Fermi surface constituted by the surface states across the Neél temperature of 9 K. Interestingly, the Dirac cone at $\overlineΓ$ is found to be gapped at 15 K and the behavior remains similar across the magnetic transition. These results reveal complex momentum dependent gap formation and fermi surface destruction across magnetic transition in an exotic correlated topological material; the interplay between magnetism and topology in this system calls for ideas beyond existing theoretical models.

Giant spectral renormalization and complex hybridization physics in a Kondo lattice system, CeCuSb2

We investigate the electronic structure of a Kondo lattice system, CeCuSb2 exhibiting significant mass enhancement and Kondo-type behavior. We observe multiple features in the hard x-ray photoemission spectra of Ce core levels due to strong final-state effects. The depth-resolved data exhibit a significant change in relative intensity of the features with the surface sensitivity of the probe. The extracted surface and bulk spectral functions are different and exhibit a Kondo-like feature at higher binding energies in addition to the well and poorly screened features. The core-level spectra of Sb exhibit huge and complex changes as a function of the surface sensitivity of the technique. The analysis of the experimental data suggests that the two non-equivalent Sb sites possess different electronic structures and in each category, the Sb layers close to the surface are different from the bulk ones. An increase in temperature influences the Ce-Sb hybridization significantly. The plasmon-excitation-induced loss features are also observed in all core level spectra. All these results reveal the importance of Ce-Sb hybridizations and indicate that the complex renormalization of Ce-Sb hybridization may be the reason for the exotic electronic properties of this system.

Shubnikov-de Haas and de Haas-van Alphen oscillation in Czochralski grown CoSi single crystal

Anisotropic transport, Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH), and de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) quantum oscillations studies are reported on a high-quality CoSi single crystal grown by the Czochralski method. Temperature-dependent resistivities indicate the dominating electron-electron scattering. Magnetoresistance (MR) at 2 K reaches 610% for I||[111] and B||[01-1], whereas it is 500% for I||[01-1] and B||[111]. A negative slope in field-dependent Hall resistivity suggests electrons are the majority carriers. The carrier concentration extracted from Hall conductivity indicates no electron-hole compensation. In 3D CoSi, the electron transport lifetime is found to be approximately in the same order as quantum lifetime, whereas in 2D electron gas the long-range scattering drives the transport life much larger than the quantum lifetime. From linear and Hall SdH oscillations the effective masses and Dingle temperatures have been calculated. The dHvA oscillation reveals three frequencies at 18 ($γ$), 558 ($α$) and 663 T ($β$)), whereas, SdH oscillation results in only two frequencies $α$ and $β$. The $γ$ frequency observed in dHvA oscillation is a tiny hole pocket at the $Γ$ point.

Solid-like to Liquid-like Behavior of Cu Diffusion in Superionic Cu2X (X=S, Se): An Inelastic Neutron Scattering and Ab-Initio Molecular Dynamics Investigation

Cu2Se and Cu2S are excellent model systems of superionic conductors with large diffusion coefficients that have been reported to exhibit different solid-liquid-like Cu-ion diffusion. In this paper, we clarify the atomic dynamics of these compounds with temperature-dependent ab-initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) experiments. Using the dynamical structure factor and Van-Hove correlation function, we interrogate the jump-time, hopping length distribution and associated diffusion coefficients. In cubic-Cu2Se at 500 K, we find solid-like diffusion with Cu-jump lengths matching well the first-neighbour Cu-Cu distance of ~3 Å in the crystal, and clearly defined optic phonons involving Cu-vibrations. Above 700 K, the jump-length distribution becomes a broad maximum cantered around 4 Å, spanning the first and second neighbour lattice distances, and a concurrent broadening of the Cu-phonon density of states. Further, above 900 K, the Cu-diffusion becomes close to liquid-like, with distributions of Cu-atoms continuously connecting crystal sites, while the vibrational modes involving Cu motions are highly damped, though still not fully over-damped as in a liquid. At low temperatures, the solid-like diffusion is consistent with previous X-ray diffraction and quasielastic neutron scattering experiments, while the higher-temperature observation of the liquid-like diffusion is in agreement with previous AIMD simulations. We also report AIMD simulations in Cu2S in the hexagonal and cubic superionic phases, and observe similar solid and liquid-like diffusion at low- and high-temperatures, respectively. The calculated ionic-conductivity is in fair agreement with reported experimental values.

Coplanar cavity for strong coupling between photons and magnons in van der Waals antiferromagnet

We investigate the performance of niobium nitride superconducting coplanar waveguide resonators towards hybrid quantum devices with magnon-photon coupling. We find internal quality factors ~ 20000 at 20 mK base temperature, in zero magnetic field. We find that by reducing film thickness below 100 nm internal quality factor greater than 1000 can be maintained up to parallel magnetic field of ~ 1 T and perpendicular magnetic field of ~ 100 mT. We further demonstrate strong coupling of microwave photons in these resonators, with magnons in chromium trichloride, a van der Waals antiferromagnet, which shows that these cavities serve as a good platform for studying magnon-photon coupling in 2D magnonics based hybrid quantum systems. We demonstrate strong magnon-photon coupling for both optical and acoustic magnon modes of an antiferromagnet.

Nodeless superconductivity in the charge density wave superconductor LaPt$_2$Si$_2$

We have studied the superconducting gap structure of LaPt$_2$Si$_2$ by measuring the temperature dependence of the London penetration depth shift $Δλ(T)$ and point contact spectroscopy of single crystals. $Δλ(T)$ shows an exponential temperature dependence at low temperatures, and the derived normalized superfluid density $ρ_{s}(T)$ can be well described by a single-gap s-wave model. The point-contact conductance spectra can also be well fitted by an s-wave Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk model, where the gap value shows a typical BCS temperature and magnetic field dependence consistent with type-II superconductivity. These results suggest fully gapped superconductivity in LaPt$_2$Si$_2$, with moderately strong electron-phonon coupling.

Evolution of charge density wave order and superconductivity under pressure in LaPt$_2$Si$_2$

We report measurements of the electrical resistivity and ac magnetic susceptibility of single crystalline LaPt$_2$Si$_2$ under pressure, in order to investigate the interplay of superconductivity and CDW order. LaPt$_2$Si$_2$ exhibits a first order phase transition from a tetragonal to orthorhombic structure, accompanied by the onset of CDW order below $T_{\rm{CDW}}$ = 76 K, while superconductivity occurs at a lower temperature of $T_{\rm{c}}$ = 1.87 K. We find that the application of pressure initially suppresses the CDW transition, but enhances $T_{\rm{c}}$. At pressures above 2.4 GPa, CDW order vanishes, while both $T_{\rm{c}}$ and the resistivity $A$-coefficient reach a maximum value around this pressure. Our results suggest that the occurrence of a superconducting dome can be accounted for within the framework of BCS theory, where there is a maximum in the density of states upon the closure of the CDW gap.

Preparation, characterization and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy study of a correlated semimetal, SmBi

We report high quality single crystalline growth of SmBi using flux method. The compound crystallizes in the simple rock salt structure with space group Fm3m. The cubic structure of the single crystal was confirmed by Laue diffraction pattern. The magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal sharp antiferromagnetic order with Neel temperature of 9 K. The core level photoemission spectroscopy study of Sm 3d has been performed using monochromatic Al Kalpha source. We observe multiple features in the experimental spectra due to fonal state effect - a signature of hybridization between Sm 4f - Bi 6p states. Intense satellite features are also observed presumably due to mixed valency arising from Kondo coupling. No signature of surface-bulk difference is observed in the Sm 3d core level spectra.

Selective spin and nematic excitations using polarized pump pulses

Quantum materials display exotic behaviours related to the interplay between temperature-driven phase transitions. Here, we study electron dynamics in one such material, CaFe2As2, a parent Fe-based superconductor, employing time and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. CaFe2As2 exhibits concomitant transition to spin density wave state and nematic order below 170 K. We discover that magnetic excitations can be induced selectively, by using polarized pump pulses, significantly before the destruction of nematic order. More specifically, we observe that s-polarized light enhances electron temperature by several hundreds of degrees at a time scale of about 200 fs, while the temperature of the electrons participating in magnetic order can be enhanced by similar amount at a much faster time scale (50 fs) using p-polarized pump pulse. These results provide a pathway to achieve selective electron heating, which is not possible with other methods, as well as to disentangle phase transitions in quantum materials.

Anisotropic magnetic properties of trigonal ErAl$_2$Ge$_2$ single crystal

We report the anisotropic magnetic properties of the ternary compound ErAl$_2$Ge$_2$. Single crystals of this compound were grown by high temperature solution growth technique, using Al:Ge eutectic composition as flux. From the powder x-ray diffraction we confirmed that ErAl$_2$Ge$_2$ crystallizes in the trigonal CaAl$_2$Si$_2$-type crystal structure. The anisotropic magnetic properties of a single crystal were investigated by measuring the magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, heat capacity and electrical resistivity. A bulk magnetic ordering occurs around 4 K inferred from the magnetic susceptibility and the heat capacity. The magnetization measured along the $ab$-plane increases more rapidly than along the $c$-axis suggesting the basal $ab$-plane as the easy plane of magnetization. The magnetic susceptibility, magnetization and the $4f$-derived part of the heat capacity in the paramagnetic regime analysed based on the point charge model of the crystalline electric field (CEF) indicate a relatively low CEF energy level splitting.

Anomalies in the core level spectroscopy of a noncentrosymmetric solid, BiPd

Understanding exotic solids is a difficult task as interactions are often hidden by the symmetry of the system. Here, we study the electronic properties of a noncentrosymmetric solid, BiPd, which is a rare material exhibiting both superconductivity and topological phase of matter. Employing high resolution photoemission spectroscopy with photon energies ranging from hard x-ray to extreme ultraviolet regime, we show that hard x-ray spectroscopy alone is not enough to reveal surface-bulk differences in the electronic structure. We derived the escape depths close to the extreme surface sensitivity and find that the photon energies used for high resolution measurements such as ARPES fall in the surface sensitive regime. In addition, we discover deviation of the branching ratio of Bi core level features derived from conventional quantum theories of the core hole final states. Such paradigm shift in core level spectroscopy can be attributed to the absence of center of symmetry and spin-orbit interactions.

Weak antilocalization in a noncentrosymmetric CaAgBi single crystal

We report on the single crystal growth and transport properties of a topological semimetal CaAgBi which crystallises in the hexagonal $ABC-$type structure with the non-centrosymmetric space group $\mathit{P6_3mc}$ (No. 186). The transverse magnetoresistance measurements with current in the basal plane of the hexagonal crystal structure reveal a value of about 30 % for I // [10-10] direction and about 50 % for I // [1-210] direction at 10 K in an applied magnetic field of 14 T. The magnetoresistance shows a cusp-like behavior in the low magnetic-field region, suggesting the presence of weak antilocalization effect for temperatures less than 100 K. The Hall measurements reveal that predominant charge carriers are $p$ type exhibiting a linear behavior for fields up to 14 T and can be explained based on the single band model. The magnetoconductance of CaAgBi is analysed based on the modified Hikami-Larkin-Nagaoka (HLN) model. Our first-principles calculations within a density-functional theory framework reveal that CaAgBi supports a topological Dirac semimetal state with Dirac points located on the rotational axis slightly above the Fermi level and are protected by $C_{6v}$ point-group symmetry. The Fermi surface consists of both the electron and hole pockets. However, the size of hole pockets is much larger than electron pockets suggesting the dominant $p$ type carriers in accord with our experimental results.

Crystal structure and anisotropic magnetic properties of new ferromagnetic Kondo lattice compound Ce(Cu,Al,Si)2

Single crystals of the new compound CeCu0.18Al0.24Si1.58 have been grown by high-temperature solution growth method using a eutectic Al-Si mixture as flux. This compound is derived from the binary CeSi2 (tetragonal ThSi2-type, Pearson symbol tI12, space group I41/amd) obtained by partial substitution of Si by Cu and Al atoms but showing full occupation of the Si crystal site (8e). While CeSi2 is a well-known valence-fluctuating paramagnetic compound, the CeCu0.18Al0.24Si1.58 phase orders ferromagnetically at TC = 9.3 K. At low temperatures the easy-axis of magnetization is along the a-axis, which re-orients itself along the c-axis above 30 K. The presence of hysteresis in the magnetization curve, negative temperature coefficient of resistivity at high temperatures, reduced jump in the heat capacity and a relatively lower entropy released up to the ordering temperature, and enhanced Sommerfeld coefficient (~100 mJ/mol K2) show that CeCu0.18Al0.24Si1.58 is a Kondo lattice ferromagnetic, moderate heavy fermion compound. Analysis of the high temperature heat capacity data in the paramagnetic region lets us infer that the crystal electric field split doublet levels are located at 178 and 357 K, respectively, and Kondo temperature (8.4 K) is of the order of TC in CeCu0.18Al0.24Si1.58.

DC Magnetization study of Ni$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$ nanoalloy

Ni$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$ bulk alloys exhibit a ferromagnetic to paramagnetic quantum phase transition (QPT) at the critical concentration $x_c \sim$ 0.37. A spin glass phase arises below the Ferromagnetism by controlling the short range interaction between Ni and Rh atoms. we have synthesized nanoalloys of two different concentrations with two different reaction times by chemical reflux method. From the dc magnetization measurements, existence of ferromagnetism and spin glass phase in these nanoalloys is confirmed. A step like feature in both ZFC and FC curve at certain temperature indicates the existence of the spin glass phase.

Exploring metamagnetism of single crystalline \eun\ by neutron scattering

We present here a neutron diffraction study, both in zero field and as a function of magnetic field, of the magnetic structure of the tetragonal intermetallic \eun\ on a single crystalline sample. This material is known to undergo a cascade of transitions, first at 13.2\,K towards an incommensurate modulated magnetic structure, then at 10.5\,K to an equal moment, yet undetermined, antiferromagnetic structure. We show here that the low temperature phase presents a spiral moment arrangement with wave-vector {\bf k} = ($\frac{1}{4},δ,0)$. For a magnetic field applied along the tetragonal {\bf c}-axis, the square root of the scattering intensity of a chosen reflection matches very well the complex metamagnetic behavior of the magnetization along {\bf c} measured previously. For the magnetic field applied along the {\bf b}-axis, two magnetic transitions are observed below the transition to a fully polarized state.

Ferromagnetic ordering of minority Ce$^{3+}$ spins in a quasi-skutterudite Ce${_3}$Os${_4}$Ge$_{13}$ single crystal

We report site disorder driven ferromagnetic ordering of nearly 8$\%$ Ce atoms in single crystalline Ce${_3}$Os${_4}$Ge$_{13}$ below 0.5~K. Ce${_3}$Os${_4}$Ge$_{13}$ crystallizes in a cubic structure with space group $\it{Pm\bar{3}n}$. The structural analysis shows the presence of site-disorder in the system, where 2(a) Ge site is partially occupied by the Ce atoms. Due to the small Ce $4f$-ligand hybridization, these Ce atoms are in the Ce$^{3+}$ (magnetic) state while rest of the Ce atoms in the unit cell are in Ce$^{4-δ}$ (non-magnetic) state. The heat capacity shows a peak below 0.5~K corresponding to the ferromagnetic ordering of the Ce$^{3+}$ moments. The ferromagnetic ordering below 0.5~K is also seen in the ac-susceptibility data. At low temperatures (1.8~K$\leq T\leq 6$~K), the magnetization shows $log(T)$ dependence, whereas the resistivity shows power law ($T^n$) temperature dependence indicating the non-Fermi liquid behavior of the quasiparticles.

Giant Rashba effect at the topological surface of PrGe revealing antiferromagnetic spintronics

Rashba spin-orbit splitting in the magnetic materials opens up a new perspective in the field of spintronics. Here, we report a giant Rashba-type spin-orbit effect on PrGe [010] surface in the paramagnetic phase with Rashba coefficient α_R=5 eVÅ. Significant changes in the electronic band structure has been observed across the phase transitions from paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic (44 K) and from antiferromagnetic to the ferromagnetic ground state (41.5 K). We find that Pr 4f states in PrGe is strongly hybridized with the Pr 5d and Ge 4s-4p states near the Fermi level. The behavior of Rashba effect is found to be different in the k_x and the k_y directions showing electron-like and the hole-like bands, respectively. The possible origin of Rashba effect in the paramagnetic phase is related to the anti-parallel spin polarization present in this system. First-principles density functional calculations of Pr terminated surface with the anti-parallel spins shows a fair agreement with the experimental results. We find that the anti-parallel spins are strongly coupled to the lattice such that the PrGe system behaves like weak ferromagnetic system. Analysis of the energy dispersion curves at different magnetic phases showed that there is a competition between the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction and the exchange interaction which gives rise to the magnetic ordering in PrGe. Supporting evidences of the presence of Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction are observed as anisotropic magnetoresistance with respect to field direction and first-order type hysteresis in the X-ray diffraction measurements. A giant negative magnetoresistance of 43% in the antiferromagnetic phase and tunable Rashba parameter with temperature across the magnetic transitions makes this material a suitable candidate for technological application in the antiferromagnetic spintronic devices.

Superconducting Properties of the Non-Centrosymmetric Superconductor Re6Hf

The synthesis and detailed characterization of the noncentrosymmetric superconductor Re$_{6}$Hf using powder x-ray diffraction (XRD), magnetization, transport and thermodynamic measurements are reported. XRD confirms the crystal structure of Re$_{6}$Hf to be cubic noncentrosymmetric $α$-\textit{Mn} with a lattice parameter a = 9.6850(3)\textÅ. Resistivity, DC and AC magnetization confirms the bulk superconducting transition T$_{c}^{onset} \sim $ ~ 5.96 K. The lower critical field H$_{C1}(0)\approx$ 5.6 mT and upper critical H$_{C2}(0)$ was found to be around 12.2 T which is greater than the Pauli limiting field, indicating unconventional behavior in Re$_{6}$Hf and leads to the possibility of triplet pairing. A sharp discontinuity in the specific heat data was observed around T$_{c}$ indicating bulk superconductivity, and the normalized specific heat jump is $ΔC_{el}$/$γ_{n}$T$_{c}$ = 1.53 which is in close agreement with BCS value. Superconducting electronic specific heat data is fitted reasonably well for an exponential relation with Sommerfeld coefficient ($γ$) showing a linear relation with magnetic field suggesting that in Re$_{6}$Hf dominant pairing channel is s-wave with isotropic superconducting gap parameter without nodes.

{Multiband Superconductivity in Lu$_3$Os$_4$Ge$_{13}$

Intermetallic R$_3$T$_4$X$_{13}$ series consists of cage like structure and have been in focus due to their unconventional electronic ground states. In this work, we report the normal and superconducting state properties of a high quality single crystal of Lu$_3$Os$_4$Ge$_{13}$. Lu$_3$Os$_4$Ge$_{13}$ belongs to the above mentioned series and crystallizes in a cubic crystal structure with the space group $\it{Pm\bar{3}n}$. Using electrical transport, magnetization and heat capacity measurements, we show that Lu$_3$Os$_4$Ge$_{13}$ is a type-II multi-band superconductor ($T{_c} =3.1$~K) with unusual superconducting properties. The analysis of the low temperature heat capacity data suggests that Lu$_3$Os$_4$Ge$_{13}$ is a moderately coupled multi-band BCS superconductor with two gaps ($2Δ/ {k{_B}T{_c}} = 3.68 \pm {0.04} ~\& ~0.34 \pm {0.02}$) in the superconducting state. The dc-magnetization ($M-H$) shows a large reversible region in the superconducting state similar to the vortex liquid phase observed in high-$T{_c}$ superconductors. The value of the Ginzburg number $G_{i}$ suggests that the thermal fluctuations, though small as compared to those in high-$T{_c}$ cuprates, may play an important role in the unpinning of the vortices in this compound. The electronic band structure calculations show that three bands cross the Fermi level and constitute a complex Fermi surface in Lu$_3$Os$_4$Ge$_{13}$

Anisotropic physical properties of PrRhAl$_4$Si$_2$ single crystal a non-magnetic singlet ground state compound

We have grown the single crystal of PrRhAl$_4$Si$_2$, which crystallizes in the tetragonal crystal structure. From the low temperature physical property measurements like, magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, heat capacity and electrical resistivity, we found that this compound does not show any magnetic ordering down to 70~mK. Our crystal field calculations on the magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements reveal that the 9-fold degenerate $(2J+1)$ levels of Pr atom in PrRhAl$_4$Si$_2$, splits into 7 levels, with a singlet ground state and a well separated excited doublet state at 123~K, with a overall level splitting energy of 320~K.

Electronic nature of the lock-in magnetic transition in CeXAl4Si2

We have investigated the underlying magnetism in newly discovered single crystal Kondo lattices CeXAl4Si2, where X = Rh, Ir. We show that the compound undergoes an incommensurate-to-commensurate magnetic transition at Tc = 9.19 K (10.75 K in Ir). The spin correlation in the incommensurate phase is described by a spin density wave configuration of Ce-ions, which locks-in to the long-range antiferromagnetic order at T = Tc. The qualitative analysis of the experimental data suggests the role of the Fermi surface nesting, instead of the lattice distortion causing the Umklapp correction or the soliton propagation, as the primary mechanism behind this phenomenon.

Enhanced conduction band density of states in intermetallic EuTSi$_3$ (T=Rh, Ir)

We report on the physical properties of single crystalline EuRhSi$_3$ and polycrystalline EuIrSi$_3$, inferred from magnetisation, electrical transport, heat capacity and $^{151}$Eu Mössbauer spectroscopy. These previously known compounds crystallise in the tetragonal BaNiSn$_3$-type structure. The single crystal magnetisation in EuRhSi$_3$ has a strongly anisotropic behaviour at 2 K with a spin-flop field of 13 T, and we present a model of these magnetic properties which allows the exchange constants to be determined. In both compounds, specific heat shows the presence of a cascade of two close transitions near 50 K, and the $^{151}$Eu Mössbauer spectra demonstrate that the intermediate phase has an incommensurate amplitude modulated structure. We find anomalously large values, with respect to other members of the series, for the RKKY Néel temperature, for the spin-flop field (13 T), for the spin-wave gap ($\simeq$ 20-25 K) inferred from both resistivity and specific heat data, for the spin-disorder resistivity in EuRhSi$_3$ ($\simeq 35$ $μ$Ohm.cm) and for the saturated hyperfine field (52 T). We show that all these quantities depend on the electronic density of states at the Fermi level, implying that the latter must be strongly enhanced in these two materials. EuIrSi$_3$ exhibits a giant magnetoresistance ratio, with values exceeding 600 % at 2 K in a field of 14 T.

Evolution of magnetic, transport, and thermal properties in Na$_{4-x}$Ir$_3$O$_8$

The hyper-kagome material Na$_4$Ir$_3$O$_8$ is a three-dimensional spin-liquid candidate proximate to a quantum critical point (QCP). We present a comprehensive study of the structure, magnetic susceptibility $χ$, heat capacity $C$, and electrical transport on polycrystalline samples of the doped hyper-kagome material Na$_{4-x}$Ir$_3$O$_8$ ($x \approx 0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.7)$. Materials with $x\leq 0.3$ are found to be Mott insulators with strong antiferromagnetic interactions and no magnetic ordering down to $T = 2$ K\@. All samples show irreversibility below $T \approx 6$ K between the zero-field-cooled and field-cooled magnetization measured in low fields ($H = 0.050$ T) suggesting a frozen low temperature state although no corresponding anomaly is seen in the heat capacity. The $x = 0.7$ sample shows $ρ(T)$ which weakly increases with decreasing temperature $T$, nearly $T$ independent $χ$, a linear in $T$ contribution to the low temperature $C$, and a Wilson ratio $R_W \approx 7$ suggesting anomalous semi-metallic behavior.

Kondo lattice and antiferromagnetic behavior in quaternary CeTAl$_4$Si$_2$ (T~=~Rh, Ir) single crystals

We report the synthesis and the magnetic properties of single crystalline CeRhAl$_4$Si$_2$ and CeIrAl$_4$Si$_2$ and their non magnetic La-analogs. The single crystals of these quaternary compounds were grown using Al-Si binary eutectic as flux. The anisotropic magnetic properties of the cerium compounds were explored in detail by means of magnetic susceptibility, isothermal magnetization, electrical resistivity, magnetoresistivity and heat capacity measurements. Both CeRhAl$_4$Si$_2$ and CeIrAl$_4$Si$_2$ undergo two antiferromagnetic transitions, first from the paramagnetic to an antiferromagnetic state at $T_{\rm N1}$~=~12.6~K and 15.5~K, followed by a second transition at lower temperatures $T_{\rm N2}$~=~9.4~K and 13.8~K, respectively. The paramagnetic susceptibility is highly anisotropic and its temperature dependence in the magnetically ordered state suggests the $c$-axis to be the relatively easy axis of magnetization. Concomitantly, isothermal magnetization at 2~K along the $c$-axis shows a sharp spin-flop transition accompanied by a sizeable hysteresis, while it varies nearly linearly with field along the [100] direction up to the highest field 14~T, of our measurement. The electrical resistivity provides evidence of the Kondo interaction in both compounds, inferred from its $-lnT$ behavior in the paramagnetic region. The heat capacity data confirm the bulk nature of the two magnetic transitions in each compound, and further confirm the presence of Kondo interaction by a reduced value of the entropy associated with the magnetic ordering. From the heat capacity data below 1~K, the coefficient of the linear term in the electronic heat capacity, $γ$, is inferred to be 195.6 and 49.4~mJ/mol K$^2$ in CeRhAl$_4$Si$_2$ and CeIrAl$_4$Si$_2$, respectively classifying these materials as moderate heavy fermion compounds.

Magnetic properties and complex magnetic phase diagram in non centrosymmetric EuRhGe$_3$ and EuIrGe$_3$ single crystals

We report the magnetic properties of two Eu based compounds, single crystalline EuIrGe$_3$ and EuRhGe$_3$, inferred from magnetisation, electrical transport, heat capacity and $^{151}$Eu Mössbauer spectroscopy. These previously known compounds crystallise in the non-centrosymmetric, tetragonal, $I4mm$, BaNiSn$_3$-type structure. Single crystals of EuIrGe$_3$ and EuRhGe$_3$ were grown using high temperature solution growth method using In as flux. EuIrGe$_3$ exhibits two magnetic orderings at $T_{\rm N1}$ = 12.4 K, and $T_{\rm N2}$ = 7.3 K. On the other hand EuRhGe$_3$ presents a single magnetic transition with a $T_{\rm N}$ = 12 K. $^{151}$Eu Mössbauer spectra present evidence for a cascade of transitions from paramagnetic to incommensurate amplitude modulated followed by an equal moment antiferromagnetic phase at lower temperatures in EuIrGe$_3$, the transitions having a substantial first order character. On the other hand the $^{151}$Eu Mössbauer spectra at 4.2 and 9 K in EuRhGe$_3$ present evidence of a single magnetic transition. In both compounds a superzone gap is observed for the current density $J\parallel$ [001], which enhances with transverse magnetic field. The magnetisation measured up to 14 T shows the occurrence of field induced transitions, which are well documented in the magnetotransport data as well. The magnetic phase diagram constructed from these data is complex, revealing the presence of many phases in the $H-T$ phase space.

The CeMIn5 (M = Rh, Ir and Co) System and the Single Energy Scale Model of Metamagnetism

For a decade and a half, CeCoIn$_5$ and related alloys have served as a rich playground to explore the interplay between magnetism and unconventional superconductivity. Despite this extended study, the presence/absence of metamagnetism (MM) in this ternary system remains as an unresolved issue. Here we show that the linear and non-linear magnetic response in CeMIn$_5$ (M = Rh, Ir and Co) can be understood within the context of the recently proposed single energy scale (SES) model of MM. New measurements of the third-order susceptibility, $χ_3$, in CeCoIn$_5$ are presented and together with the known systematics of the linear susceptibility in all three compounds, are shown to be consistent with the SES model. Predictions are made for the MM critical field in CeCoIn$_5$ and the fifth-order susceptibility, $χ_5$.

Unveiling of Bragg glass to vortex glass transition by an ac driving force in a single crystal of Yb3Rh4Sn13

We present here some striking discrepancies in the results of ac and dc magnetization measurements performed in a single crystal of low Tc superconductor, Yb3Rh4Sn13. Fingerprint of a transition from an ordered vortex lattice a la Bragg glass (BG) phase to a partially-disordered vortex glass (VG) like phase gets unearthed under the influence of an ac driving force present inevitably in the isothermal ac susceptibility measurements. In contrast to its well-known effect of improving the state of spatial order in the vortex matter, the ac drive is surprisingly found to promote disorder by assisting the BG to VG transition to occur at a lower field value in this compound. On the other hand, the isothermal dc magnetization (M-H) scans, devoid of such a driving force, do not reveal this transition; they instead yield signature of another order-disorder transition at elevated fields, viz., peak effect (PE), located substantially above the BG to VG transition observed in the isothermal ac susceptibility measurements. Further, the evolution of PE feature with increasing field as observed in isofield ac susceptibility plots indicates emergence of an ordered vortex configuration (BG) from a disordered phase above a certain field, H* (~ 4 kOe). Below H*, the vortex matter created via field-cooling (FC) is found to be better spatially ordered than that prepared in zero field-cooled (ZFC) mode. This is contrary to the usual behavior anticipated near the high-field order-disorder transition (PE) wherein a FC state is supposed to be a supercooled disordered phase and the ZFC state is comparatively better ordered.

Weakening of the spin density wave gap at low temperatures in SrFe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals

We report on temperature dependent scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy studies of undoped SrFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ single crystals from 6 K to 292 K. Resistivity data show spin density wave (SDW) transition at T$_{SDW}$ $\approx$ 205 K and the superconducting transition at $\sim$ 21 K while magnetic susceptibility does not show any superconductivity. Conductance maps and local tunneling spectra show an electronically homogeneous surface at all studied temperatures. Tunnel spectra correlate well with the SDW transition with a depression in the density of states near the Fermi energy below T$_{SDW}$. On further lowering the temperature, the width of this partial energy gap associated with the SDW decreases. Using the anti-correlation of superconducting phase with SDW, we interpret this gap weakening as a precursor to superconductivity. This may give rise to a facile nucleation of superconductivity near defects.

$μ$SR and inelastic neutron scattering investigations of the noncentrosymmetric antiferromagnet CeNiC$_2$

The magnetic state of the noncentrosymmetric antiferromagnet CeNiC$_2$ has been studied by magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements. CeNiC$_2$ exhibits three magnetic phase transitions at $T_{N_1}$ = 20 K, $T_{N_2}$ = 10 K and $T_{N_3}$ = 2.5 K. The presence of long range magnetic order below 20 K is confirmed by the observation of oscillations in the $μ$SR spectra between 10 and 20 K and a sharp increase in the muon depolarization rate. INS studies reveal two well-defined crystal electric field (CEF) excitations around 8 and 30 meV. INS data have been analyzed using a CEF model and the wave functions were evaluated. We also calculated the direction and magnitude of the ground state moment using CEF wave functions and compare the results with that proposed from the neutron diffraction. Our CEF model correctly predicts that the moments order along the $b-$axis (or $y$-axis) and the observed magnetic moment is 0.687(5) $μ_B$, which is higher than the moment observed from the neutron diffraction (0.25 $μ_B$/Ce). We attribute the observed reduced moment due to the Kondo screening effect.

Anisotropic magnetic properties and giant magnetocaloric effect of PrSi single crystal

Single crystal of PrSi was grown by Czochralski method in a tetra-arc furnace. Powder x-ray diffraction of the as grown crystal revealed that PrSi crystallizes in FeB$-$type structure with space group $Pnma$ (no. 62). PrSi undergoes a ferromagnetic transition at 52 K with [010] direction as the easy axis of magnetization. Heat capacity data confirm the bulk nature of the transition at 52 K and exhibit a huge anomaly at the transition. A sharp rise in the low temperature heat capacity has been observed (below 5 K) which is attributed to the $^{141}$Pr nuclear Schottky heat capacity arising from the hyperfine field of the Pr moment. The estimated Pr magnetic moment 2.88 $μ_{\rm B}$/Pr from the hyperfine splitting is in agreement with the saturation magnetization value obtained from the magnetization data measured at 2 K. From the crystal electric field (CEF) analysis of the magnetic susceptibility, magnetization and the heat capacity data it is found that the degenerate $J = 4$ Hund's rule derived state of Pr$^{3+}$-ion splits into nine singlets with an overall splitting of 284 K, the first excited singlet state separated by just 9 K from the ground state. The magnetic ordering in PrGe appears to be due to the exchange generated admixture of low lying crystal field levels. Magnetocaloric effect (MCE) has been investigated from magnetization data along all the three principal crystallographic directions. Large magnetic entropy change, $-ΔS_M = $22.2 J/kg K, and the relative cooling power, RCP = $460$ J/kg, characteristic of giant magneto caloric effect are achieved near the transition temperature ($T_{\rm C}$ = 52 K) for $H =$~70 kOe along $[010]$. Furthermore, the PrSi single crystal exhibits a giant MCE anisotropy.

Anisotropic putative "up-up-down" magnetic structure in EuTAl$_4$Si$_2$ (T = Rh and Ir)

We present detailed investigations in single crystals of two recently reported quaternary intermetallic compounds EuRhAl$_4$Si$_2$ and EuIrAl$_4$Si$_2$ employing magnetization, electrical resistivity in zero and applied fields, heat capacity and $^{151}$Eu Mössbauer spectroscopy measurements. The two compounds order antiferromagnetically at $T_{\rm N1}$ = 11.7 and 14.7\,K, respectively, each undergoing two magnetic transitions: the first from paramagnetic to incommensurate modulated antiferromagnetic, the second at lower temperature to a commensurate antiferromagnetic phase as confirmed by heat capacity and Mössbauer spectra. The magnetic properties in the ordered state present a large anisotropy despite Eu$^{2+}$ being an $S$-state ion for which the single-ion anisotropy is expected to be weak. Two features in the magnetization measured along the $c$-axis are prominent. At 1.8\,K, a ferromagnetic-like jump occurs at very low field to a value one third of the saturation magnetization (1/3 M$_0$) followed by a wide plateau up to 2\,T for T = Rh and 4\,T for T = Ir. At this field value, a sharp hysteretic spin-flop transition occurs to a fully saturated state (M$_0$). Surprisingly, the magnetization does not return to origin when the field is reduced to zero in the return cycle, as expected in an antiferromagnet. Instead, a remnant magnetization 1/3 M$_0$ is observed and the magnetic loop around the origin shows hysteresis. This suggests that the zero field magnetic structure has a ferromagnetic component, and we present a model with up to third neighbor exchange and dipolar interaction which reproduces the magnetization curves and hints to an "up-up-down" magnetic structure in zero field.

Crystal growth and magnetic properties of equiatomic CeAl

Single crystal of CeAl has been grown by flux method using Ce-Al self-flux. Several needle like single crystals were obtained and the length of the needle corresponds to the [001] crystallographic direction. Powder x-ray diffraction revealed that CeAl crystallizes in orthorhombic CrB-type structure with space group ${Cmcm}$ (no. 63). The magnetic properties have been investigated by means of magnetic susceptibility, isothermal magnetization, electrical transport, and heat capacity measurements. CeAl is found to order antiferromagnetically with a N$\grave{\rm e}$el temperature $T_{\rm N}$ = 10K. The magnetization data below the ordering temperature reveals two metamagentic transitions for fields less than 20kOe. From the inverse magnetic susceptibility an effective moment of $2.66μ_{\rm B}$/Ce has been estimated, which indicates that Ce is in its trivalent state. Electrical resistivity data clearly shows a sharp drop at 10K due to the reduction of spin disorder scattering of conduction electrons thus confirming the magnetic ordering. The estimated residual resistivity ratio (RRR) is 33, thus indicating a good quality of the single crystal. The bulk nature of the magnetic ordering is also confirmed by heat capacity data. From the Schottky anomaly of the heat capacity we have estimated the crystal field level splitting energies of the $(2J+1)$ degenerate ground state as 25K and 175K respectively for the fist and second excited states.

Dual role of an ac driving force and the underlying two distinct order-disorder transitions in the vortex phase diagram of Ca3Ir4Sn13

We present distinct demarcation of the Bragg glass (BG) to multi-domain vortex glass (VG) transition line and the eventual amorphization of the VG phase in a weakly pinned single crystal of the superconducting compound Ca3Ir4Sn13 on the basis of comprehension of the different yields about the second magnetization peak (SMP) anomaly in the dc magnetization and the corresponding anomalous feature in the ac susceptibility measurements. The shaking by a small ac magnetic field, inevitably present in the ac susceptibility measurements, is seen to result in contrasting responses in two different portions of the field-temperature (H, T) phase space of the multi-domain VG. In one of the portions, embracing the BG to VG transition across the onset of the SMP anomaly, the ac drive is surprisingly seen to assist the transformation of the well ordered BG phase to a lesser ordered VG phase. The BG phase exists as a superheated state over a small portion of the VG space and this attests to the first order nature of the BG to VG transition.

Electronic inhomogeneities in the superconducting phase of CaFe1.96Ni0.04As2 single crystals

Superconductivity in Iron-Arsenic based pnictides emerges in close proximity to an antiferromagnetic (AFM)ordered parent state and the AFM phase overlaps with superconducting (SC) phase in some pnictides for certain range of doping. CaFe2-xNixAs2 belongs to this category, where both the phases overlap. Here we use scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy to investigate the local electronic properties of uderdoped CaFe1.96Ni0.04As2 single crystals in the vicinity of the boundary of the two phases. Both resistivity and magnetic measurements show that a tiny portion (~ 1.2 %) of this compound becomes superconductor below the SC onset temperature TC ~ 15 K. Topographic images show reasonably flat surface with signatures of atomic resolution. High temperature spectra are spatially homogeneous and show signatures of spin density wave (SDW) gap with a finite density of states near the Fermi energy. Below TC, spectra show significant spatial inhomogeneity with a SDW gap everywhere but at some locations we also see an asymmetric or symmetric depression in ~ +/- 5 meV energy range together with the SDW gap. Inhomogeneity reduces significantly as the temperature goes above TC and disappears completely far above TC. These observations are discussed in terms of an inhomogeneous electronic phase that may exist due to the vicinity of this composition to the SC dome boundary on the underdoped side of the phase diagram.

Estimate of the Coulomb Correlation Energy in CeAg$_2$Ge$_2$ from Inverse Photoemission and High Resolution Photoemission Spectroscopy

The occupied and the unoccupied electronic structure of CeAg$_2$Ge$_2$ single crystal has been studied using high resolution photoemission and inverse photoemission spectroscopy respectively. High resolution photoemission reveals the clear signature of Ce $4f$ states in the occupied electronic structure which was not observed earlier due to the poor resolution. The coulomb correlation energy in this system has been determined experimentally from the position of the $4f$ states above and below the Fermi level. Theoretically the correlation energy has been determined by using the first principles density functional calculations within the generalized gradient approximations taking into account the strong intra-atomic (on-site) interaction Hubbard $U_{eff}$ term. Although the valence band calculated with different $U_{eff}$ does not show significant difference, but the substantial changes are observed in the conduction band. The estimated value of correlation energy from both the theory and the experiment is $\approx$4.2~eV for CeAg$_2$Ge$_2$.

EuNiGe3, an equal moment anisotropic antiferromagnet

Single crystals of EuNiGe$_3$ crystallizing in the non-centrosymmetric BaNiSn$_3$-type structure have been grown using In flux, enabling us to explore the anisotropic magnetic properties which was not possible with previously reported polycrystalline samples. The EuNiGe$_3$ single crystalline sample is found to order antiferromagnetically at 13.2 K as revealed from the magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity and electrical resistivity data. The low temperature magnetization M(H) is distinctly different for field parallel to ${ab}$-plane and $c$-axis; the ${ab}$-plane magnetization varies nearly linearly with field before the occurrence of an induced ferromagnetic phase (spin-flip) at 6.2 Tesla; on the other hand M(H) along the $c$-axis is accompanied by two metamagnetic transitions followed by a spin-flip at 4.1 T. A model including anisotropic exchange and dipole-dipole interactions reproduces the main features of magnetization plots but falls short of full representation. (H,T) phase diagrams have been constructed for the field applied along the principal directions. From the $^{151}$Eu Mössbauer spectra, we determine that the 13.2 K transition leads to an incommensurate antiferromagnetic intermediate phase followed by a transition near 10.5 K to a commensurate antiferromagnetic configuration.

Evidence of surface superconductivity and multi-quanta vortex states in a weakly-pinned single crystal of Ca3Ir4Sn13

We report here the observation of anomalous paramagnetic signal(s) in the isofield field-cooled cool-down magnetization scans (MFCC(T)) recorded for a single crystal of a low Tc superconductor Ca3Ir4Sn13. Novel features emanating from the MFCC(T) response include an oscillatory magnetization behaviour below Tc and a rich multiplicity (non-uniqueness) in magnetization ranging from diamagnetism to paramagnetism at a given H, T value. The metastability in MFCC(T) has been ascribed to non-unique coexistence of multi-quanta vortex states and single quantum (Abrikosov) vortices. Additionally, the isothermal M(H) scans recorded across a short window of temperature just below Tc show evidence for only the multi-quanta vortex states in the domain of surface superconductivity, with no fingerprint(s) of pinned Abrikosov lattice.

Probing anisotropy in a new noncentrosymmetric superconductor BiPd

Strength of Rashba type antisymmetric spin orbit coupling has the crucial effect on superconducting and normal state properties in noncentrosymmetric (NCS) superconductors. This can be seen on various anisotropic properties of the system. For a system with lowered crystalline symmetry as in noncentrosymmetric crystals, the superconducting pairing state can have correlation to the normal state properties. In our earlier work we have shown that alfa-BiPd which has a monoclinic (P_21) structure with the absence of the centre of inversion exhibits bulk superconductivity at 3.8 K. In order to understand the role of spin-orbit scattering, we have studied the anisotropic properties of high quality single crystal (RRR 170) of NCS BiPd by measuring magnetic susceptibility, electrical transport from 1.8 K to 300 K and isothermal M_H loop (1.8 K to 3.8 K) in the superconducting state for <010> and <100> crystallographic directions respectively. Moderate anisotropy up to 30 % has been found in the electrical transport possibly indicating significant Rashba type antisymmetric spin orbit coupling present in alfa-BiPd.

Superconductivity in cubic noncentrosymmetric PdBiSe Crystal

Mixing of spin singlet and spin triplet superconducting pairing state is expected in noncentrosymmetric superconductors (NCS) due to the inherent presence of Rashba-type antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling. Unlike low symmetry (tetragonal or monoclinic) NCS, parity is isotropicaly broken in space for cubic NCS and can additionally lead to the coexistence of magnetic and superconducting state under certain conditions. Motivated with such enriched possibility of unconventional superconducting phases in cubic NCS we are reporting successful formation of single crystalline cubic noncentrosymmetric PdBiSe with lattice parameter a = 6.4316 Å and space group P2_1 3 (space group no. 198) which undergoes to superconducting transition state below 1.8 K as measured by electrical transport and AC susceptibility measurements. Significant strength of Rashba-type antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling can be expected for PdBiSe due to the presence of high Z (atomic number) elements consequently making it potential candidate for unconventional superconductivity.

Superconductivity in Y$_3$Ru$_4$Ge$_{13}$ and Lu$_3$Os$_4$Ge$_{13}$: A comparative study

A variety of unconventional superconductors have low carrier density as a common factor. However, the underlying mechanism of superconductivity in such low carrier density systems is not well understood. Besides, small carrier density is an unfavourable component for conventional superconductivity as described by the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory. Therefore, studying low carrier density systems can lead to a better understanding in such systems. In this paper, we report superconductivity property studies in low carrier density systems, Y$_3$Ru$_4$Ge$_{13}$ and Lu$_3$Os$_4$Ge$_{13}$, using various experimental techniques. Single crystals of Y$_3$Ru$_4$Ge$_{13}$ and Lu$_3$Os$_4$Ge$_{13}$ have been grown using the Czochralski crystal pulling method in a tetra-arc furnace. The x-ray diffraction experiment reveals that both compounds crystallize in cubic structure {(space group $\it{Pm3n}$, no. 223)}. The transport, magnetization and heat capacity measurements show that Y$_3$Ru$_4$Ge$_{13}$ single crystal undergoes a superconducting transition at 2.85~K, whereas, Lu$_3$Os$_4$Ge$_{13}$ becomes superconductor at 3.1~K.

Anisotropic magnetic properties and crystal electric field studies on CePd$_2$Ge$_2$ single crystal

The anisotropic magnetic properties of the antiferromagnetic compound CePd$_2$Ge$_2$, crystallizing in the tetragonal crystal structure have been investigated in detail on a single crystal grown by Czochralski method. From the electrical transport, magnetization and heat capacity data, the Néel temperature is confirmed to be 5.1 K. Anisotropic behaviour of magnetization and resistivity is observed along the two principal crystallographic directions viz., [100] and [001]. The isothermal magnetization measured in the magnetically ordered state at 2 K exhibits a spin re-orientation at 13.5 T for field applied along [100] direction, whereas the magnetization was linear along the [001] direction attaining a value of 0.94 $μ_{\rm B}$/Ce at 14 T. The reduced value of the magnetization is attributed to the crystalline electric field (CEF) effects. A sharp jump in the specific heat at the magnetic ordering temperature is observed. After subtracting the phononic contribution, the jump in the heat capacity amounts to 12.5 J/K mol which is the expected value for a spin ${1}{2}$ system. From the CEF analysis of the magnetization data the excited crystal field split energy levels were estimated to be at 120 K and 230 K respectively, which quantitatively explain the observed Schottky anomaly in the heat capacity. A magnetic phase diagram has been constructed based on the field dependence of magnetic susceptibility and the heat capacity data.

Electronic structure of CaFe2As2

We investigate the electronic structure of CaFe$_2$As$_2$ using high resolution photoemission spectroscopy. Experimental results exhibit three energy bands crossing the Fermi level making hole pockets around the $Γ$-point. Temperature variation reveal a gradual shift of an energy band away from the Fermi level with the decrease in temperature in addition to the spin density wave (SDW) transition induced Fermi surface reconstruction of the second energy band across SDW transition temperature. The hole pocket in the former case eventually disappears at lower temperatures while the hole Fermi surface of the third energy band possessing finite $p$ orbital character survives till the lowest temperature studied. These results reveal signature of a complex charge redistribution among various energy bands as a function of temperature that might be associated to the exotic properties of this system.

Single crystal of CeMg$_{12}$ is obtained by Bridgman method. CeMg$_{12}$ crystallizes in the tetragonal structure with space group $I4/mmm$ (#139). The Laue pattern confirms the tetragonal crystal structure of CeMg$_{12}$. We have studied the magnetic properties by measuring magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, heat capacity and electrical transport. Specific heat measurement shows that the compound orders at 1.2 K. We have measured the magnetic susceptibility in the temperature range 1.8 to 300 K, and the susceptibility data show that [100] crystallographic direction is the easy axis of magnetization. Indium Sulphide (InS) single crystals are successfully grown by In flux. Single crystal X-ray diffraction shows orthorhombic structure of Pnnm space group. Ellipsometry measurements performed on the (010) oriented crystal exhibit low anisotropy in the 300-1000 nm wavelength range and consequently negligible THz emission is observed. Optical band gap of $2.09 eV$ is deduced from linear optical measurements. Nonlinear optical properties are studied by single beam Z-scan measurements at 800 nm, where two-photon absorption is present. Nonlinear refractive index and absorption coefficient are estimated to be $η_2$ = $2.3 10^{-11} cm^2/W$ and $β$= $62.4 cm/ GW$, respectively for excitation intensity of $0.32 GW/cm^2$. The origin of nonlinearity in InS crystal is accounted to be due to the third-order anharmonic motion of the bound electrons.

Superconductivity in a low carrier density system: A single crystal study of cubic Y$_3$Ru$_4$Ge$_{13}$

We have successfully grown the single crystal of a low carrier density system Y$_3$Ru$_4$Ge$_{13}$ which crystallizes in the cubic crystal structure with the space group Pm3n. Y$_3$Ru$_4$Ge$_{13}$ exhibits super conductivity below 2.85 K as determined from the electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements. The bulk measurements indicate multiband superconductivity in this low carrier system. Hall effect measurements show that the Hall coefficient R$_H$ is positive and it decreases rapidly with temperature which is highly unusual. The simple estimation of the carrier concentration gives a value (\sim 10$^{20}$/cm$^3$) which is 2-3 orders of magnitude lower than that of a conventional metal like Cu which seems to suggest that Y$_3$Ru$_4$Ge$_{13}$ is a semimetal that display multiband superconductivity.

Anisotropic magnetic properties and superzone gap formation in CeGe single crystal

Single crystals of CeGe and its non-magnetic analogue LaGe have been grown by Czochralski method. CeGe compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic FeB-type crystal structure with the space group \textit{Pnma} (#62). The anisotropic magnetic properties have been investigated on well oriented single crystals by measuring the magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity and heat capacity. It has been found that CeGe orders antiferromagnetically at 10.5 K. Both transport and magnetic studies have revealed large anisotropy reflecting the orthorhombic crystal structure. The magnetization measurement measured at 2 K revealed metamagnetic transitions along the [010] direction at 4.8 and 6.4 T and along [100] direction at a critical field of 10.7 T, while the magnetiztaion along [001] direction was increasing linearly without any anomaly up to a field of 16 T. From the magnetic susceptibility and the magnetization measurements it has been found that [010] direction is the easy axis of magnetization. The electrical resistivity along the three crystallographic directions exhibited an upturn at $T_{\rm N}$ indicating the superzone gap formation below $T_{\rm N}$ in this compound. We have performed the crystalline electric field (CEF) analysis on the magnetic susceptibility and the heat capacity data and found that the ground state is doublet and the splitting energies from the ground state to the first and second excited doublet states were estimated to be 39 and 111 K, respectively.

Anomalous local magnetic field distribution and strong pinning in CaFe1.94Co0.06As2 single crystals

Magneto-optical imaging of a single crystal of CaFe1.94Co0.06As2, shows anomalous remnant magnetization within Meissner like regions of the superconductor. The unconventional shape of the local magnetization hysteresis loop suggests admixture of superconducting and magnetic fractions governing the response. Near the superconducting transition temperature, local magnetic field exceeds the applied field resulting in a diamagnetic to positive magnetization transformation. The observed anomalies in the local magnetic field distribution are accompanied with enhanced bulk pinning in the CaFe1.94Co0.06As2 single crystals. We propose our results suggest a coexistence of superconductivity and magnetic correlations.

Antiferro and ferromagnetic ordering in PrGe single crystal

The equiatomic PrGe single crystal was grown by Czochralski pulling method. The grown single crystal was found to have CrB-type orthorhombic crystal structure with the space group \textit{Cmcm} (#63). Transport and magnetization data reveal large anisotropy in the electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and magnetization. PrGe was found to exhibit two consecutive magnetic orderings at 44 K and 41.5 K, respectively. The magnetic susceptibility measurement along the three principal directions, in low applied fields, revealed a cusp like behaviour at 44 K while at 41.5 K a ferromagnetic like increase was observed. The hysteritic behaviour in the magnetization measurement at 1.8 K confirmed the ferromagnetic nature of PrGe at low temperatures. The heat capacity data clearly revealed the bulk nature of two magnetic transitions by the presence of two sharp peaks attaining values exceeding 40 J/K$\cdot$mol at the respective temperatures. The absence of Schottky contribution in the magnetic part of heat capacity indicates a quasi-ninefold degenerate J=4 magnetic ground state in this system. The low temperature data of electrical resistivity and the magnetic part of heat capacity show an existence of gap in the spin-wave spectrum.

Imaging local magnetic field distribution in a single crystal of superconductor CaFe1.94Co0.06As2 shows the presence of anomalous remnant magnetization within Meissner like regions of the sample. Close to the superconducting transition temperature we find a coexistence of superconductivity and magnetic correlations. While the magnetic correlations are enhanced with the lowering of temperature, interestingly the area over which the magnetic phase exists shrinks at the expense of a growing superconducting phase in the sample. The coexistence of two phases deep inside the superconducting phase in this compound is maintained within the temperature range that we have explored in our experiment.

Evidence of the influence of magnetism on pseudogap states in the high resolution spectra of EuFe$_2$As$_2$

Employing {\it state of the art} high resolution photoemission spectroscopy, we studied the temperature evolution of the electronic structure of EuFe$_2$As$_2$, an unique pnictide, where antiferromagnetism of Eu layer survives within the superconducting phase due to `FeAs' layers achieved via substitution and/or pressure. High energy and angle resolution helped to reveal pseudogap-quasiparticle features having primarily As 4$p$ character and spin density wave transition induced band folding in the electronic structure. A weakly dispersing feature of dominant As 4$p$ character is discovered around 80 meV that becomes weaker in intensity below 20 K manifesting influence of antiferromagnetic order on conduction electrons. These results provide an evidence of a link between the pseudogap states and magnetism that could be revealed employing high resolutions.

Magnetic and transport properties of Pr2Pt3Si5

We have investigated the magnetic and transport properties of a polycrystalline Pr2Pt3Si5 sample through the dc and ac magnetic susceptibilities, electrical resistivity, and specific heat measurements. The Rietveld refinement of the powder X-ray diffraction data reveals that Pr2Pt3Si5 crystallizes in the U2Co3Si5-type orthorhombic structure (space group Ibam). Both the dc and ac magnetic susceptibility data measured at low fields exhibit sharp anomaly near 15 K. In contrast, the specific heat data exhibit only a broad anomaly implying no long range magnetic order down to 2 K. The broad Schottky-type anomaly in low temperature specific heat data is interpreted in terms of crystal electric field (CEF) effect, and a CEF-split singlet ground state is inferred. The absence of the long range order is attributed to the presence of nonmagnetic singlet ground state of the Pr3+ ion. The electrical resistivity data exhibit metallic behavior and are well described by the Bloch-Grüniesen-Mott relation.

Magnetic properties of the heavy fermion antiferromagnet CeMg$_3$

We have grown the single crystals of CeMg$_3$ and its non-magnetic analogue LaMg$_3$, which crystallize in the cubic crystal structure with the space group \textit{Fm\rm{\={3}}m}, and studied their magnetic properties on well oriented single crystals by measuring the magnetic susceptibility, magnetization and heat capacity. CeMg$_3$ orders antiferromagnetically with a Néel temperature $T_{\rm N}$ of 2.6 K. The specific heat capacity at low temperature exhibits an enhanced Sommerfeld coefficient of 370 mJ/K$^2$$...$ mol indicating the heavy fermion nature of CeMg$_3$. An estimation of Kondo temperature $T_{\rm K}$ was made and found that it is of similar magnitude as that of $T_{\rm N}$. The reduced value of the magnetization below the ordering temperature, together with the reduced entropy at the magnetic ordering temperature and the enhanced low temperature heat capacity indicates that Kondo effect plays a significant role in this compound. We have performed the crystalline electric field (CEF) analysis on the magnetic susceptibility and the heat capacity data and found that the ground state is a $Γ_7$ doublet with an overall splitting of 191 K.

Superconductivity in non-centrosymmetric BiPd system

In this work, we establish the bulk superconductivity of a high quality sample of monoclinic BiPd ($α$-BiPd, space group P2$_1$) below 3.87 K by studying its electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity. We show that it is clean type-II superconductor with moderate electron-phonon coupling and determine its superconducitng and normal state parameters. Although $α$-BiPd is a noncentrosymmetric superconductor with large electronic heat capacity (therefore, large $γ$), the effect of spin-orbit splitting of the electronic bands at the Fermi level is small. This makes little influence on the superconducting properties of $α$-BiPd.

Unusual Coupling Between Field-induced Spin Fluctuations and Spin Density Wave in Intermetallic CeAg2Ge2

We report on the experimental evidences for an unusual coupling between the magnetic field- induced fluctuations of correlated Ce-ions coinciding with the discontinuous movement of the underlying spin density wave in the intermetallic rare earth compound CeAg2Ge2. The measurements performed using neutron scattering and magnetic Gruneisen ratio methods suggest that the coupling onsets at H= 2.7 T, T < 3.8 K and persists to the lowest measurement temperature T ~ 0.05 K. These measurements suggest a new mechanism behind the spin fluctuations which can affect the intrinsic properties of the system.

Field induced spin reorientation and giant spin-lattice coupling in EuFe2As2

We have studied a EuFe2As2 single crystal by neutron diffraction under magnetic fields up to 3.5 T and temperatures down to 2 K. A field induced spin reorientation is observed in the presence of a magnetic field along both the a and c axes, respectively. Above critical field, the ground state antiferromagnetic configuration of Eu$^{2+}$ moments transforms into a ferromagnetic structure with moments along the applied field direction. The magnetic phase diagram for Eu magnetic sublattice in EuFe2As2 is presented. A considerable strain ($\sim$0.9%) is induced by the magnetic field, caused by the realignment of the twinning structure. Furthermore, the realignment of the twinning structure is found to be reversible with the rebound of magnetic field, which suggested the existence of magnetic shape-memory effect. The Eu moment ordering exhibits close relationship with the twinning structure. We argue that the Zeeman energy in combined with magnetic anisotropy energy is responsible for the observed spin-lattice coupling.

Magnetic properties of EuPtSi$_3$ single crystals

Single crystals of EuPtSi$_3$, which crystallize in the BaNiSn$_3$-type crystal structure, have been grown by high temperature solution growth method using molten Sn as the solvent. EuPtSi$_3$ which lacks the inversion symmetry and has only one Eu site in the unit cell is found to be an antiferromagnet with two successive magnetic transitions at $T_{\rm N1}$ = 17 K and $T_{\rm N2}$ = 16 K, as inferred from magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity and $^{151}$Eu Mössbauer measurements. The isothermal magnetization data for $H \parallel$ [001] reveal a metamagnetic transition at a critical field $H_{\rm c}$ = 1 T. The magnetization saturates to a moment value of 6.43 $μ_{\rm B}$/Eu above 5.9 T (9.2 T) for $H \parallel $ [001] ([100]), indicating that these fields are spin-flip fields for the divalent Eu moments along the two axes. The origin of this anisotropic behaviour is discussed. A magnetic (H, T) phase diagram has been constructed from the temperature dependence of isothermal magnetization data. The reduced jump in the heat capacity at $T_{\rm N1}$ indicates a transition to an incommensurate, amplitude modulated antiferromagnetic structure. The shape of the hyperfine field split Mössbauer spectrum at $T_{\rm N1}$ provides additional support for the proposed nature of this magnetic transition.

Search and identification of repeated magnetic compensation in Nd(1-x)R(x)Al(2) (R = Gd, Tb) series

We undertook investigations in polycrystalline R(x)R'(1-x)Al(2) alloys, in particular, explored the stoichiometries, Nd(0.8)Gd(0.2)Al(2) and Nd(0.8)Tb(0.2)Al(2), to study the magnetic compensation behavior in them in the context of contemporary interest. In these admixed rare-earth (RE) intermetallics, the compensation phenomenon is characterized by a crossover of the M = 0 axis in the low field thermomagnetic response, and a turnaround behavior due to the field-induced reversal in the orientations of the RE moments at high fields. While the characteristic attributes are present in Nd(0.8)Gd(0.2)Al(2), a repeated/multiple magnetic compensation behavior stands observed in Nd(0.8)Tb(0.2)Al(2). The ac susceptibility, the heat capacity and the transport measurements in the latter compound reveal the onset of two quasi-antiferromagnetic transitions one after the other on cooling down from the high temperature end. The two magnetic transitions involving competition between the contributions from nearly balanced weighted averages of moments of Nd{3+} and Tb{3+} ions generate the curious multiple crossings of the M = 0 axis. The results are compared and contrasted with repeated compensation behavior reported earlier in admixed Nd(0.8)Gd(0.2)Rh(3)B(2) alloy.

The compounds crystallize in an orthorhombic structure with space group \textit {Pnma}. LaAu$_{2}$In$_{4}$ shows a Pauli-paramagnetic behavior. CeAu$_{2}$In$_{4}$ do not order down to 1.8 K. The easy axis of magnetization for CeAu$_{2}$In$_{4}$ is along [010] direction. The magnetization data is analyzed on the basis of crystalline electric field (CEF) model.

Magnetic Behavior in RRhX (R = rare earths; X=B, C) Compounds

We report on the magnetic behavior of RRhB (R = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Gd, Tb and Tm) and RRhC (R = La, Ce, Pr and Gd) compounds crystallizing in the cubic perovskite type structure with space group Pm3m. The heat capacity data on Pauli-paramagnetic LaRhB and LaRhC indicate a high frequency vibrating motion of boron and carbon atoms in the unit cell. Ce is in -like nonmagnetic state in both the compounds. Pr compounds show a dominant crystal field effect with a nonmagnetic singlet ground state in PrRhB and a nonmagnetic quadrupolar doublet in PrRhC. Compounds with other rare earths order ferromagnetically at low temperatures except TmRhB in which the zero field evolution of magnetic interactions is relatively more complicated. The electrical resistivity of GdRhB decreases with increasing temperature in the paramagnetic state in the vicinity of T, which is rarely seen in ferromagnets. The behavior is discussed to be arising due to the short range spin fluctuation and a possible contribution from Fermi surface geometry.

Magnetocrystalline anisotropy in RAu_{2}Ge_{2} (R = La, Ce and Pr) single crystals

Anisotropic magnetic properties of single crystalline RAu_{2}Ge_{2} (R = La, Ce and Pr) compounds are reported. LaAu_{2}Ge_{2} exhibit a Pauli-paramagnetic behavior whereas CeAu_{2}Ge_{2} and PrAu_{2}Ge_{2} show an antiferromagnetic ordering with N\grave{e}el temperatures T_{N} = 13.5 and 9 K, respectively. The anisotropic magnetic response of Ce and Pr compounds establishes [001] as the easy axis of magnetization and a sharp spin-flip type metamagnetic transition is observed in the magnetic isotherms. The resistance and magnetoresistance behavior of these compounds, in particular LaAu_{2}Ge_{2}, indicate an anisotropic Fermi surface. The magnetoresistivity of CeAu_{2}Ge_{2} apparently reveals the presence of a residual Kondo interaction. A crystal electric field analysis of the anisotropic susceptibility in conjunction with the experimentally inferred Schottky heat capacity enables us to propose a crystal electric field level scheme for Ce and Pr compounds. For CeAu_{2}Ge_{2} our values are in excellent agreement with the previous reports on neutron diffraction. The heat capacity data in LaAu_{2}Ge_{2} show clearly the existence of Einstein contribution to the heat capacity.

Pressure dependence of phonon modes across the tetragonal to collapsed tetragonal phase transition in CaFe2As2

The pressure dependence of a large number of phonon modes in CaFe2As2 with energies covering the full range of the phonon spectrum has been studied using inelastic x-ray and neutron scattering. The observed phonon frequency changes are in general rather small despite the sizable changes of the lattice parameters at the phase transition. This indicates that the bonding properties are not profoundly altered by the phase transition. The transverse acoustic phonons propagating along the c-direction are an exception because they stiffen very significantly in response to the large contraction of the c-axis. The lattice parameters are found to change significantly as a function of pressure before, during and after the first-order phase transition. However, the frequencies change nearly uniformly with the change in the lattice parameters due to pressure, with no regard specifically to the first-order phase transition. Density functional theory describes the frequencies in both the zero pressure and in the collapsed phase in a satisfactory way if based on the respective crystal structures.

Thermal and Transport Behavior of Single Crystalline R2CoGa8 (R = Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Lu and Y) Compounds

The anisotropy in electrical transport and thermal behavior of single crystalline R$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$ series of compounds is presented. These compounds crystallize in a tetragonal structure with space gropup P4/mmm. The nonmagnetic counterparts of the series namely Y$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$ and Lu$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$show a behavior consistent with the low density of states at the fermi level. In Y$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$, a possibility of charge density wave transition is observed at $\approx$ 30 K. Gd$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$ and Er$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$ show a presence of short range correlation above the magnetic ordering temperature of the compound. In case of Gd$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$, the magnetoresistance exhibits a significant anisotropy for current parallel to {[}100{]} and {[}001{]} directions. Compounds with other magnetic rare earths (R = Tb, Dy, Ho and Tm) show the normal expected magnetic behavior whereas Dy$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$ exhibits the possibility of charge density wave (CDW) transition at approximately same temperature as that of Y$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$. The thermal property of these compounds is analysed on the basis of crystalline electric field (CEF) calculations.

Crystal Growth and Anisotropic Magnetic Properties of RAg$_2$Ge$_2$ (R = Pr, Nd and Sm) Single Crystals

We report the single crystal growth and anisotropic magnetic properties of the tetragonal RAg$_2$Ge$_2$ (R = Pr, Nd and Sm) compounds which crystallize in the ThCr$_2$Si$_2$ type crystal structure with the space group \textit{I4/mmm}. The single crystals of RAg$_2$Ge$_2$ (R = Pr, Nd and Sm) were grown by self-flux method using Ag:Ge binary alloy as flux. From the magnetic studies on single crystalline samples we have found that PrAg$_2$Ge$_2$ and NdAg$_2$Ge$_2$ order antiferromagnetically at 12 K and 2 K respectively, thus corroborating the earlier polycrystalline results. SmAg$_2$Ge$_2$ also orders antiferromagnetically at 9.2 K. The magnetic susceptibility and magnetization show a large anisotropy and the easy axis of magnetization for PrAg$_2$Ge$_2$ and NdAg$_2$Ge$_2$ is along the [100] direction where as it changes to [001] direction for SmAg$_2$Ge$_2$. Two metamagnetic transitions were observed in NdAg$_2$Ge$_2$ at $H_{\rm m1}$ = 1.25 T and $H_{\rm m2}$ =3.56 T for the field parallel to [100] direction where as the magnetization along [001] direction was linear indicating the hard axis of magnetization.

Exchange bias and its phase reversal in the zero magnetization admixed rare earth intermetallics

Exchange bias effect is an important attribute in several device applications. Traditionally, it is discussed as a form of exchange anisotropy at the interface between the ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic layers of two distinct systems. We report here on the magnetically ordered alloys possessing the feature of unidirectional anisotropy, which reverses its sign across a characteristic temperature. These are admixed rare earth intermetallics, comprising two dissimilar rare earth (RE) ions, belonging to the two different halves of the 4f-series and imbibing the notion of ferromagnetic coupling between the spins of all 4f-rare earth ions and that of the conduction electrons. Magnetic moments of dissimilar RE ions in such admixed alloys, however, get antiferromagnetically coupled and they display magnetic compensation feature such that the field induced reversal in the orientation of the magnetic moments of dissimilar rare earth ions happens across the compensation temperature (Tcomp). Above a threshold field, the conduction electron polarization also reverses its sign across Tcomp, this is argued to correlate with the observed phase reversal in the exchange bias field.

Sign reversal in the exchange bias and the collapse of hysteresis width across the magnetic compensation temperature in a single crystal of Nd0.75Ho0.25Al2

In the admixed Nd0.75Ho0.25Al2 system, magnetic moments of Nd and Ho occupying the same crystallographic site are antiferromagnetically coupled and the chosen stoichiometry displays a magnetic compensation behavior (Tcomp of about 24 K) in all orientations. In the vicinity of Tcomp, the conduction electron polarization (CEP) assumes the role of a soft ferromagnet exchange coupled to a pseudo-antiferromagnet comprising Nd/Ho moments, resulting in an asymmetry in the hysteretic (M-H) loop, i.e., the notion of an exchange bias field (Hexch). Across Tcomp, the CEP contribution reverses sign, and in consonance, the asymmetry in the M-H loop also undergoes a phase reversal. Interestingly, the width of the M-H loop shows a divergence, followed by a collapse on approaching Tcomp from either end. The observed behavior confirms a long standing prediction based on a phenomenological model for ferrimagnetic systems. The field induced changes across Tcomp leave an imprint of a quasi-phase transition in the heat capacity data. Magneto-resistance (ΔR / R vs T) has an oscillatory response, in which the changes across Tc and Tcomp can be recognized.
