Addendum: Towards next-to-next-to-leading-log accuracy for the width difference in the $\mathbf{B_s-\bar{B}_s}$ system: fermionic contributions to order $\mathbf{(m_c/m_b)^0}$ and $\mathbf{(m_c/m_b)^1}$

We calculate the three-loop master integrals of Ref. [1] [arXiv:1709.02160] in analytic form. This allows us to present the fermionic contributions to the $ΔB=2$ Wilson coefficients of the $B$-$\bar B$ decay matrix in next-to-next-to-leading order of QCD with full analytic dependence on the mass of the charm quark in the fermionic loops.

Higgs decay into a lepton pair and a photon: a roadmap to $\mathbf{H\to Zγ}$ discovery and probes of new physics

The decay $H\to \ell^+\ell^- γ$, $\ell=e,μ$, receives contributions from $H\to Z[\to \ell^+\ell^-] γ$ and a non-resonant contribution, both of which are loop-induced. We describe how one can separate these sub-processes in a gauge-independent way, define the decay rate $Γ(H\to Zγ)$, and extract the latter from differential $H\to \ell^+\ell^- γ$ branching ratios. For $\ell=μ$ also the tree decay rate, which is driven by the muon Yukawa coupling, is important. We propose kinematic cuts optimized to separate the three contributions, paving the way to the milestones (i) discovery of $H\to Z γ$, (ii) discovery of $H\to μ^+μ^- \left. γ\right|_{\rm tree}$, and (iii) quantification of new physics in both the effective $H$-$Z$-$γ$ and non-resonant $H$-$\ell^+$-$\ell^-$-$γ$ couplings.

The width difference in \bbm\ at order $α_s$ and beyond

We complete the calculation of the element $Γ_{12}^q$ of the decay matrix in $B_q-\bar{B}_q$ mixing, $q=d,s$, to order $α_s$ in the leading power of the Heavy Quark Expansion. To this end we compute one- and two-loop contributions involving two four-quark penguin operators. Furthermore, we present two-loop QCD corrections involving a chromomagnetic operator and either a current-current or four-quark penguin operator. Such contributions are of order $α_s^2$, i.e. next-to-next-to-leading-order. We also present one-loop and two-loop results involving two chromomagnetic operators which are formally of next-to-next-to-leading and next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-order, respectively. With our new corrections we obtain the Standard-Model prediction $ΔΓ_s/ΔM_s= (5.20\pm 0.69)\cdot 10^{-3}$ if $Γ_{12}^s$ is expressed in terms of the $\overline{\rm MS}$ b-quark mass, while we find $ΔΓ_s/ΔM_s= (4.70\pm 0.96)\cdot 10^{-3}$ instead for the use of the pole mass.

The width difference in the $B-\bar{B}$ system at next-to-next-to-leading order of QCD

We extend the theoretical prediction for the width difference $ΔΓ_q$ in the mixing of neutral $B$ mesons in the Standard Model to next-to-next-to-leading order in $α_s$. To this aim we calculate three-loop diagrams with two $|ΔB|=1$ current-current operators analytically. In the matching between $|ΔB|=1$ and $|ΔB|=2$ effective theories we regularize the infrared divergences dimensionally and take into account all relevant evanescent operators. Further elements of the calculation are the two-loop renormalization matrix $Z_{ij}$ for the $|ΔB|=2$ operators and the $\mathcal{O}(α_s^2)$ corrections to the finite renormalization that ensures the $1/m_b$ suppression of the operator $R_0$ at two-loop order. Our theoretical prediction reads $ΔΓ_s/ΔM_s = {(4.33\pm 0.93)\cdot 10^{-3}}$ if expressed in terms of the bottom mass in the $\overline{\rm MS}$ scheme and $ΔΓ_s/ΔM_s = {(4.20\pm 0.95)\cdot 10^{-3}}$ for the use of the potential-subtracted mass. While the controversy on $|V_{cb}|$ affects both $ΔΓ_s$ and $ΔM_s$, the ratio $ΔΓ_s/ΔM_s$ is not affected by the uncertainty in $|V_{cb}|$ .

Charm decays

I discuss hadronic decays of $D$ mesons with emphasis on the recent discovery of charm CP violation in $D^0\to K^+K^-,π^+π^-$ decays. The measured difference $Δa_{CP} \, \equiv \; a_{CP}^{\mathrm{dir}}(D^0\rightarrow K^+K^-) - a_{CP}^{\mathrm{dir}}(D^0\rightarrowπ^+π^-) = \; (-15.4\pm 2.9)\cdot 10^{-4}$ of two direct CP asymmetries exceeds the SM prediction by a factor of 7. A possible explanation is an enhancement of the penguin amplitude entering $ a_{CP}^{\mathrm{dir}}$ by QCD effects which are not understood yet. Alternatively, $Δa_{CP}$ could be dominated by contributions from new physics. In order to distinguish these two hypotheses further CP asymmetries should be measured. To this end CP asymmetries resulting from the interference of two tree-level amplitudes auch as $a_{CP}^{\mathrm{dir}}(D^0\rightarrow K_SK_S)$ or $a_{CP}^{\mathrm{dir}}(D^0 \to K^{*0} K_S)$ are especially interesting.

Higgs portal to dark matter and $B\to K^{(*)}$ decays

We consider a Higgs portal model in which the 125-GeV Higgs boson mixes with a light singlet mediator $h_2$ coupling to particles of a Dark Sector and study potential $b\to s h_2$ decays in the Belle II experiment. Multiplying the gauge-dependent off-shell Standard-Model $b$-$s$-Higgs vertex with the sine of the Higgs mixing angle does not give the correct $b$-$s$-$h_2$ vertex. We clarify this issue by calculating the $b$-$s$-$h_2$ vertex in an arbitrary $R_ξ$ gauge and demonstrate how the $ξ$ dependence cancels from physical decay rates involving an on-shell or off-shell $h_2$. Then we revisit the $b\to s h_2$ phenomenology and point out that a simultaneous study of $B\to K^* h_2$ and $B\to K h_2$ helps to discriminate between the Higgs portal and alternative models of the Dark Sector. We further advocate for the use of the $h_2$ lifetime information contained in displaced-vertex data with $h_2$ decaying back to Standard-Model particles to better constrain the $h_2$ mass or to reveal additional $h_2$ decay modes into long-lived particles.

Penguin contribution to width difference and CP asymmetry in $B_q$-$\bar B_q$ mixing at order $α_s^2 N_f$

We present new contributions to the decay matrix element $Γ_{12}^q$ of the $B_q$-$\bar B_q$ mixing complex, where $q=d$ or $s$. Our new results constitute the order $α_s^2 N_f$ corrections to the penguin contributions to the Wilson coefficients entering $Γ_{12}^q$ with full dependence on the charm quark mass. This is the first step towards the prediction of the CP asymmetry $a_{\rm fs}^q$ quantifying CP violation in mixing at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic order (NNLO) in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and further improves the prediction of the width difference $ΔΓ_q$ between the two neutral-meson eigenstates. We find a sizable effect from the non-zero charm mass and our partial NNLO result decreases the NLO penguin corrections to $a_{\rm fs}^q$ by 37\% and those to $ΔΓ_q$ by 16\%. We further update the Standard-Model NLO predictions for $a_{\rm fs}^q$ and the ratio of the width and mass differences of the $B_q$ eigenstates: If we express the results in terms of the pole mass of the bottom quark we find $a_{\rm fs}^s=(2.07 \pm 0.10)\cdot 10^{-5}$, $a_{\rm fs}^d=(-4.71 \pm 0.24)\cdot 10^{-4}$, $ΔΓ_s/Δ{M}_s = (4.33 \pm 1.26)\cdot 10^{-3}$, and $ΔΓ_d/Δ{M}_d = (4.48 \pm 1.19)\cdot 10^{-3}$. In the $\overline{\rm MS}$ scheme these numbers read $a^s_{\rm fs} =(2.04 \pm 0.11)\cdot 10^{-5}$, $a^d_{\rm fs} = (-4.64 \pm 0.25)\cdot 10^{-4}$, $ΔΓ_s/Δ{M}_s = (4.97 \pm 1.02)\cdot 10^{-3}$, and $ΔΓ_d/Δ{M}_d = (5.07 \pm 0.96)\cdot 10^{-3}$.

Charm Quark Contribution to K+ -> pi+ nu anti-nu at Next-to-Next-to-Leading Order

We calculate the complete NNLO QCD corrections to the charm contribution of the rare decay K+ -> pi+ nu nu-bar. We encounter several new features, which were absent in lower orders. We discuss them in detail and present the results for the 2-loop matching conditions of the Wilson coefficients, the 3-loop anomalous dimensions, and the 2-loop matrix elements of the relevant operators that enter the NNLO renormalization group analysis of the Z-penguin and the electroweak box contribution. The inclusion of the NNLO QCD corrections leads to a significant reduction of the theoretical uncertainty from 9.8% down to 2.4% in the relevant parameter Pc, implying the leftover scale uncertainties in BR(K+ -> pi+ nu nu-bar) and in the determination of |V_td|, sin(2 beta), and gamma from the K -> pi nu nu system to be 1.3%, 1.0%, 0.006, and 1.2 degrees, respectively. For the charm quark MSbar mass mc=(1.30+-0.05) GeV and |V_us|= 0.2248 the NLO value Pc=0.37+-0.06 is modified to Pc=0.38+-0.04 at the NNLO level with the latter error fully dominated by the uncertainty in mc. We present tables for Pc as a function of mc and alphas(MZ) and a very accurate analytic formula that summarizes these two dependences as well as the dominant theoretical uncertainties. Adding the recently calculated long-distance contributions we find BR(K+ -> pi+ nu nu-bar)=(8.0+-1.1)*10^-11 with the present uncertainties in mc and the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa elements being the dominant individual sources in the quoted error. We also emphasize that improved calculations of the long-distance contributions to K+ -> pi+ nu nu-bar and of the isospin breaking corrections in the evaluation of the weak current matrix elements from K+ -> pi0 e+ nu would be valuable in order to increase the potential of the two golden K -> pi nu nu decays in the search for new physics.

Direct CP violation in $K\to ππ$ decays and supersymmetry

The quantities $ε_K^\prime$ and $ε_K$ measure the amount of direct and indirect CP violation in $K\to ππ$ decays, respectively. Using the recent lattice results from the RBC and UKQCD Collaborations and a new compact implementation of the $ΔS=1$ renormalization group evolution we predict $ \mbox{Re}\, \frac{ε_{K}'}{ε_{K}} = \left(1.06 \pm 5.07 \right) \times 10^{-4}$ in the Standard Model. This value is $2.8\,σ$ below the experimental value of $ \mbox{Re}\, \frac{ε_{K}'}{ε_{K}} = \left(16.6 \pm 2.3 \right) \times 10^{-4}.$ In generic models of new physics the well-understood $ε_K$ precludes large contributions to $ε_K^\prime$, if the new contributions enter at loop level. However, one can resolve the tension in $ε_{K}'/ε_{K}$ within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. To this end two features of supersymmetry are crucial: First, one can have large isospin-breaking contributions (involving the strong instead of the weak interaction) which enhance $ε_K^\prime$. Second, the Majorana nature of gluinos permits a suppression of the MSSM contribution to $ε_K$, because two box diagrams interfere destructively.

Singularity-free Next-to-leading Order $ΔS= 1$ Renormalization Group Evolution and $ε_{K}^{\prime}/ε_{K}$ in the Standard Model and Beyond

The standard analytic solution of the renormalization group (RG) evolution for the $ΔS = 1$ Wilson coefficients involves several singularities, which complicate analytic solutions. In this paper we derive a singularity-free solution of the next-to-leading order (NLO) RG equations, which greatly facilitates the calculation of $ε_K^{\prime}$, the measure of direct $CP$ violation in $K\to ππ$ decays. Using our new RG evolution and the latest lattice results for the hadronic matrix elements, we calculate the ratio $ε_{K}^{\prime}/ε_{K}$ (with $ε_{K}$ quantifying indirect $CP$ violation) in the Standard Model (SM) at NLO to $ε_{K}^{\prime}/ε_{K} = (1.06 \pm 5.07) \times 10^{-4} $, which is $2.8\,σ$ below the experimental value. We also present the evolution matrix in the high-energy regime for calculations of new physics contributions and derive easy-to-use approximate formulae. We find that the RG amplification of new-physics contributions to Wilson coefficients of the electroweak penguin operators is further enhanced by the NLO corrections: If the new contribution is generated at the scale of 1-10 TeV, the RG evolution between the new-physics scale and the electroweak scale enhances these coefficients by 50-100 %. Our solution contains a term of order $α_{EM}^2/α_s^2$, which is numerically unimportant for the SM case but should be included in studies of high-scale new-physics.

Supersymmetric Explanation of CP Violation in $K\to ππ$ Decays

Recent progress in the determination of hadronic matrix elements has revealed a tension between the measured value of $ε_K^{\prime}/ε_K$, which quantifies direct $CP$ violation in $K \to ππ$ decays, and the Standard-Model prediction. The well-understood indirect $CP$ violation encoded in the quantity $ε_K$ typically precludes large new-physics contributions to $ε_K^{\prime}/ε_K$ and challenges such an explanation of the discrepancy. We show that it is possible to cure the $ε_K^{\prime}/ε_K$ anomaly in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model with squark masses above 3 TeV without overshooting $ε_K$. This solution exploits two features of supersymmetry: the possibility of large isospin-breaking contributions (enhancing $ε_K^{\prime}$) and the Majorana nature of gluinos (permitting a suppression of $ε_K$). Our solution involves no fine-tuning of $CP$ phases or other parameters.

CP Violation in $D^0\rightarrow K_SK_S$

The direct CP asymmetry $a_{CP}^{\mathrm{dir}}(D^0\rightarrow K_SK_S)$ involves exchange diagrams which are induced at tree level in the Standard Model. Since the corresponding topological amplitude $E_{KK}$ can be large, $D^0\rightarrow K_SK_S$ is a promising discovery channel for charm CP violation. We estimate the penguin annihilation amplitude with a perturbative calculation and extract the exchange amplitude $E_{KK}$ from a global fit to $D$ branching ratios. Our results are further used to predict the size of mixing-induced CP violation. We obtain $\vert a_{CP}^{\mathrm{dir}}(D^0\rightarrow K_SK_S)\vert \leq 1.1\%$ (95\% C.L.). The same bound applies to the nonuniversal part of the phase between the $D\!-\overline{\!D}\,$ mixing and decay amplitudes. If future data exceed our predictions, this will point to new physics or an enhancement of the penguin annihilation amplitude by QCD dynamics. We briefly discuss the implications of these possibilities for other CP asymmetries.

Lepton-flavour violating $B$ decays in generic $Z^\prime$ models

LHCb has reported deviations from the Standard Model in $b\to sμ^+μ^-$ transitions for which a new neutral gauge boson is a prime candidate for an explanation. As this gauge boson has to couple in a flavour non-universal way to muons and electrons in order to explain $R_K$, it is interesting to examine the possibility that also lepton flavour is violated, especially in the light of the CMS excess in $h\toτ^\pmμ^\mp$. In this article, we investigate the perspectives to discover the lepton-flavour violating modes $B\to K^{(*)}τ^\pmμ^\mp$, $B_s\to τ^\pmμ^\mp$ and $B\to K^{(*)} μ^\pm e^\mp$, $B_s\to μ^\pm e^\mp$. For this purpose we consider a simplified model in which new-physics effects originate from an additional neutral gauge boson ($Z^\prime$) with generic couplings to quarks and leptons. The constraints from $τ\to3μ$, $τ\toμν\barν$, $μ\to eγ$, $g_μ-2$, semi-leptonic $b\to sμ^+μ^-$ decays, $B\to K^{(*)}νν$ and $B_s$--$\overline{B}_s$ mixing are examined. From these decays, we determine upper bounds on the decay rates of lepton flavour violating $B$ decays. $Br(B\to Kνν)$ limits the branching ratios of LFV $B$ decays to be smaller than $8\times 10^{-5} (2\times 10^{-5})$ for vectorial (left-handed) lepton couplings. However, much stronger bounds can be obtained by a combined analysis of $B_s$--$\overline{B}_s$, $τ\to3μ$, $τ\toμν\barν$ and other rare decays. The bounds depend on the amount of fine-tuning among the contributions to $B_s$--$\overline{B}_s$ mixing. Allowing for a fine-tuning at the percent level we find upper bounds of the order of $10^{-6}$ for branching ratios into $τμ$ final states, while $B_s\to μ^\pm e^\mp$ is strongly suppressed and only $B\to K^{(*)} μ^\pm e^\mp$ can be experimentally accessible (with a branching ratio of order $10^{-7}$).

Penguin contributions to CP phases in $B_{d,s}$ decays to charmonium

The precision of the CP phases $2β$ and $2β_s$ determined from the mixing-induced CP asymmetries in $B_d\to J/ψK_S$ and $B_s\to J/ψϕ$, respectively, is limited by the unknown long-distance contribution of a penguin diagram involving up quarks. The penguin contribution is expected to be comparable in size to the precision of the LHCb and Belle II experiments and therefore limits the sensitivity of the measured quantities to new physics. We analyze the infrared QCD structure of this contribution and find that all soft and collinear divergences either cancel between different diagrams or factorize into matrix elements of local four-quark operators up to terms suppressed by $Λ_{QCD}/m_ψ$, where $m_ψ$ denotes the $J/ψ$ mass. Our results, which are based on an operator product expansion, allow us to calculate the penguin-to-tree ratio $P/T$ in terms of the matrix elements of these operators and to constrain the penguin contribution to the phase $2β$ as $|Δϕ_d|\leq {0.68}^\circ$. The penguin contribution to $2β_s$ is bounded as $|Δϕ_s^{0}|\leq {0.97}^\circ$, $|Δϕ_s^{\parallel}|\leq {1.22}^\circ$, and $|Δϕ_s^{\perp}|\leq {0.99}^\circ$ for the case of longitudinal, parallel, and perpendicular $ϕ$ and $J/ψ$ polarizations, respectively. We further place bounds on $|Δϕ_d|$ for $B_d\to ψ(2S) K_S$ and the polarization amplitudes in $B_d\to J/ψK^*$. In our approach it is further possible to constrain $P/T$ for decays in which $P/T$ is Cabibbo-unsuppressed and we derive upper limits on the penguin contribution to the mixing-induced CP asymmetries in $B_d\to J/ψπ^0$, $B_d\to J/ψρ^0$, $B_s\to J/ψK_S$, and $B_s\to J/ψK^*$. For all studied decay modes we also constrain the sizes of the direct CP asymmetries.

Sum Rules of Charm CP Asymmetries beyond the SU(3)$_F$ Limit

We find new sum rules between direct CP asymmetries in $D$ meson decays with coefficients that can be determined from a global fit to branching ratio data. Our sum rules eliminate the penguin topologies $P$ and $PA$, which cannot be determined from branching ratios. In this way we can make predictions about direct CP asymmetries in the standard model without ad hoc assumptions on the sizes of penguin diagrams. We consistently include first-order SU(3)$_F$ breaking in the topological amplitudes extracted from the branching ratios. By confronting our sum rules with future precise data from LHCb and Belle~II one will identify or constrain new-physics contributions to $P$ or $PA$. The first sum rule correlates the CP asymmetries $a_{CP}^{\mathrm{dir}}$ in $D^0\to K^+K^-$, $D^0\to π^+π^-$, and $D^0\to π^0π^0$. We study the region of the $a_{CP}^{\mathrm{dir}}(D^0\to π^+π^-)$--$a_{CP}^{\mathrm{dir}} (D^0\to π^0π^0)$ plane allowed by current data and find that our sum rule excludes more than half of the allowed region at 95\% C.L. Our second sum rule correlates the direct CP asymmetries in $D^+\rightarrow \bar{K}^0 K^+$, $D_s^+\rightarrow K^0 π^+$, and $D_s^+\rightarrow K^+π^0$.

Topological amplitudes in $D$ decays to two pseudoscalars: a global analysis with linear $SU(3)_F$ breaking

We study decays of $D^0$, $D^+$, and $D_s^+$ mesons into two pseudoscalar mesons by expressing the decay amplitudes in terms of topological amplitudes. Including consistently SU(3)$_F$ breaking to linear order, we show how the topological-amplitude decomposition can be mapped onto the standard expansion using reduced amplitudes characterized by SU(3) representations. The tree and annihilation amplitudes can be calculated in factorization up to corrections which are quadratic in the color-counting parameter $1/N_c$. We find new sum rules connecting $D^+\rightarrow K_SK^+$, $D_s^+\rightarrow K_Sπ^+$ and $D^+\rightarrow K^+π^0$, which test the quality of the $1/N_c$ expansion. Subsequently, we determine the topological amplitudes in a global fit to the data, taking the statistical correlations among the various measurements into account. We carry out likelihood ratio tests in order to quantify the role of specific topological contributions. While the SU(3)$_F$ limit is excluded with a significance of more than five standard deviations, a good fit (with $Δχ^2 <1$) can be obtained with less than $28\%$ of SU(3)$_F$ breaking in the decay amplitudes. The magnitude of the penguin amplitude $P_{\mathrm{break}}$, which probes the Glashow Iliopoulos Maiani (GIM) mechanism, is consistent with zero; the hypothesis $P_{\mathrm{break}}=0$ is rejected with a significance of just $0.7σ$. We obtain the Standard-Model correlation between $\mathcal{B}(D^0\rightarrow K_L π^0)$ and $\mathcal{B}(D^0\rightarrow K_Sπ^0)$, which probes doubly Cabibbo-suppressed amplitudes, and find that $\mathcal{B}(D^0\rightarrow K_L π^0)<\mathcal{B}(D^0\rightarrow K_Sπ^0)$ holds with a significance of more than $4σ$. We finally predict $\mathcal{B}(D_s^+\rightarrow K_L K^+)= 0.012^{+0.006}_{-0.002}$ at $3σ$ CL.

Vacuum stability of the effective Higgs potential in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model

The parameters of the Higgs potential of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) receive large radiative corrections which lift the mass of the lightest Higgs boson to the measured value of 126 GeV. Depending on the MSSM parameters, these radiative corrections may also lead to the situation that the local minimum corresponding to the electroweak vacuum state is not the global minimum of the Higgs potential. We analyze the stability of the vacuum for the case of heavy squark masses as favored by current LHC data. To this end we first consider an effective Lagrangian obtained by integrating out the heavy squarks and then study the MSSM one-loop effective potential V_eff, which comprises all higher-dimensional Higgs couplings of the effective Lagrangian. We find that only the second method gives correct results and argue that the criterion of vacuum stability should be included in phenomenological analyses of the allowed MSSM parameter space. Discussing the cases of squark masses of 1 and 2 TeV we show that the criterion of vacuum stability excludes a portion of the MSSM parameter space in which (mu tanbeta) and A_t are large.

Benchmarks for Higgs Pair Production and Heavy Higgs Searches in the Two-Higgs-Doublet Model of Type II

The search for additional Higgs particles and the exact measurements of Higgs (self-) couplings is a major goal of future collider experiments. In this paper we investigate the possible sizes of new physics signals in these searches in the context of the $CP$-conserving two-Higgs doublet model of type II. Using current constraints from flavour, electroweak precision, and Higgs signal strength data, we determine the allowed sizes of the triple Higgs couplings and the branching fractions of the heavy Higgs bosons into lighter Higgs bosons. Identifying the observed Higgs resonance with the light $CP$-even 2HDM Higgs boson $h$, we find that the $hhh$ coupling cannot exceed its SM value, but can be reduced by a factor of $0.56$ at the 2 $σ$ level. The branching fractions of the heavy neutral Higgs bosons $H$ and $A$ into two-fermion or two-vector-boson final states can be reduced by factors of $0.4$ and $0.01$, respectively, if decays into lighter Higgs boson are possible and if the mass of the decaying Higgs is below the $t\bar t$ threshold. To facilitate future studies of collider signatures in 2HDM scenarios with large triple Higgs couplings or decay modes of the heavy Higgs bosons not covered by the SM Higgs searches we provide a set of benchmark points which exhibit these features and agree with all current constraints. We also discuss the effect of the heavy Higgs bosons on the $gg\to hh$ cross section at a 14 TeV LHC for some of these benchmarks. For $m_H$ below the $hh$ threshold we see a reduction of the SM $gg\to hh$ cross section due to destructive interference, but for $m_H$ above the $hh$ threshold current constraints allow enhancement factors above 50. An enhancement factor of 6 is still possible in scenarios in which the heavy Higgs particles would not be discovered by standard searches after 300 fb${}^{-1}$ of data.

Status of the two-Higgs-doublet model of type II

We determine the allowed parameter space of the CP-conserving two-Higgs-doublet model (2HDM) of type II with a softly broken Z_2 symmetry. Our analysis includes theoretical constraints from vacuum stability and perturbativity as well as experimental constraints from signal strengths of the 126 GeV Higgs boson, the non-observation of additional Higgs resonances and electroweak precision and flavour observables. If the 126 GeV resonance is interpreted as the light CP-even Higgs boson of the 2HDM our analysis shows that scenarios where the couplings of this boson deviate substantially from those of the SM Higgs boson are disfavoured at one standard deviation and completely excluded for small values of tan(beta). We also discuss bounds on the masses of the heavy 2HDM Higgs bosons and their implications for the possible decay modes of these particles. We find that the region in which both non-standard neutral Higgs bosons are simultaneously lighter than 300 GeV is excluded at two standard deviations.

Gamma(K -> e nu)/Gamma(K -> mu nu) in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model

The quantity R_K = Gamma(K -> e nu)/Gamma(K -> mu nu) studied by the experiment NA62 at CERN is known to probe lepton-flavour violating (LFV) parameters of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). A non-zero parameter delta_{RR}^{13} can open the decay channel K -> e nu_tau and enhance R_K over its Standard-Model value. In the region of the parameter space probed by NA62 the contribution from a bino-stau loop diagram is numerically dominant and the mixing between left-handed and right-handed staus is important. For large values of the stau mixing angle theta_tau the commonly adopted mass insertion approximation is not accurate. We therefore express the supersymmetric contribution to R_K in terms of the mass of the lightest stau eigenstate, the mixing angle theta_tau, and other relevant MSSM parameter such as tan(beta) and the charged-Higgs boson mass M_H and plot the parameter regions constrained by R_K. We further study to which extent R_K can be depleted through MSSM contributions interfering destructively with the SM amplitude for K -> e nu_e. This lepton-flavour conserving (LFC) mechanism involves the parameter combination |delta_{LL}^{13} delta_{RR}^{13}|, which can be constrained with a naturalness consideration for the electron mass or with the measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron. The LFC effect on R_K is marginal, an NA62 measurement of R_K significantly below the Standard Model expectation would indicate physics beyond the MSSM.

Impact of a Higgs boson at a mass of 126 GeV on the standard model with three and four fermion generations

We perform a comprehensive statistical analysis of the standard model (SM) with three and four generations using the latest Higgs search results from LHC and Tevatron, the electroweak precision observables (EWPOs) measured at LEP and SLD and the latest determinations of M_W, m_t and alpha_s. For the three-generation case we analyse the tensions in the electroweak fit by removing individual observables from the fit and comparing their predicted values with the measured ones. In particular, we discuss the impact of the Higgs search results on the deviations of the EWPOs from their best-fit values. Our indirect prediction of the top mass is m_t=175.7(+3.0)(-2.2) GeV at 68.3% CL, in good agreement with the direct measurement. We also plot the preferred area in the M_W - m_t plane. The best-fit Higgs mass is 126.0 GeV. For the case of the SM with a perturbative sequential fourth fermion generation (SM4) we discuss the deviations of the Higgs signal strengths from their best-fit values. The H -> gamma gamma signal strength now disagrees with its best-fit SM4 value at more than 4 sigma. We perform a likelihood-ratio test to compare the SM and SM4 and show that the SM4 is excluded at 5.3 sigma. Without the Tevatron data on H -> b bbar the significance drops to 4.8 sigma.

Joint analysis of Higgs decays and electroweak precision observables in the Standard Model with a sequential fourth generation

We analyse the impact of LHC and Tevatron Higgs data on the viability of the Standard Model with a sequential fourth generation (SM4), assuming Dirac neutrinos and a Higgs mass of 125 GeV. To this end we perform a combined fit to the signal cross sections of pp -> H -> gamma gamma,ZZ*,WW* at the LHC, to p pbar -> VH -> V b bbar (V = W, Z) at the Tevatron and to the electroweak precision observables. Fixing the mass of the fourth generation down-type quark b' to 600 GeV we find best-fit values of m_t' = 632 GeV, m_l4 = 113.6 GeV and m_nu4 = 58.0 GeV for the other fourth-generation fermion masses. We compare the chi-square values and pulls of the different observables in the three and four-generation case and show that the data is better described by the three-generation Standard Model. We also investigate the effects of mixing between the third and fourth-generation quarks and of a future increased lower bound on the fourth-generation charged lepton mass of 250 GeV.

Resolving the sign ambiguity in Delta Gamma_s with B_s -> D_s K

The analysis of tagged B_s -> J/psi phi decays determines the CP phase phi_s in B_s-anti-B_s mixing with a two-fold ambiguity. The solutions differ in the sign of cos(phi_s) which equals the sign of the width difference Delta Gamma_s among the two B_s mass eigenstates. We point out that this ambiguity can be removed with the help of B_s -> D_s K decays. We compare untagged and tagged strategies and find the tagged analysis more promising. The removal of the sign ambiguity in Delta Gamma_s can be done with relatively low statistics and could therefore be a target for the early stage of B_s -> D_s K studies.

Status of the fourth fermion generation before ICHEP2012: Higgs data and electroweak precision observables

We perform a global fit of the parameters of the Standard Model with a sequential fourth generation (SM4) to LHC and Tevatron Higgs data and electroweak precision data. Using several likelihood ratio tests we compare the performance of the SM4 and SM3 at describing the measured data. Since the SM3 and SM4 are not nested (i.e. the SM3 can not be considered as a special case of the SM4 with some parameters fixed) the usual analytical formulae for p-values in likelihood ratio tests do not hold. We thus apply a new method to compute these p-values. For a Higgs mass of 126.5 GeV and fourth-generation quark masses above 600 GeV we find that the SM4 is excluded at 3.1 sigma.

Flavor Physics in an SO(10) Grand Unified Model

In supersymmetric grand-unified models, the lepton mixing matrix can possibly affect flavor-changing transitions in the quark sector. We present a detailed analysis of a model proposed by Chang, Masiero and Murayama, in which the near-maximal atmospheric neutrino mixing angle governs large new b -> s transitions. Relating the supersymmetric low-energy parameters to seven new parameters of this SO(10) GUT model, we perform a correlated study of several flavor-changing neutral current (FCNC) processes. We find the current bound on B(tau -> mu gamma) more constraining than B(B -> X_s gamma). The LEP limit on the lightest Higgs boson mass implies an important lower bound on tan beta, which in turn limits the size of the new FCNC transitions. Remarkably, the combined analysis does not rule out large effects in B_s-B_s-bar mixing and we can easily accomodate the large CP phase in the B_s-B_s-bar system which has recently been inferred from a global analysis of CDF and DO data. The model predicts a particle spectrum which is different from the popular Constrained Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (CMSSM). B(tau -> mu gamma) enforces heavy masses, typically above 1 TeV, for the sfermions of the degenerate first two generations. However, the ratio of the third-generation and first-generation sfermion masses is smaller than in the CMSSM and a (dominantly right-handed) stop with mass below 500 GeV is possible.

Flavour physics, supersymmetry and grand unification

A global fit to quark flavour-physics data disfavours the Standard Model with 3.6 standard deviations and points towards new CP-violating physics in meson-antimeson mixing amplitudes. Tevatron data call for a new Bs-Bs-bar mixing phase and new physics in Bd-Bd-bar mixing alleviates the tension on the unitarity triangle driven by B(B-> tau nu). In supersymmetric GUT models the large atmospheric neutrino mixing angle can influence b -> s transitions. I present the results of a recent analysis in an SO(10) GUT model which accomodates the large Bs-Bs-bar mixing phase while simultaneously obeying all other experimental constraints.

Numerical updates of lifetimes and mixing parameters of B mesons

We update the Standard-Model predictions for several quantities related to $B_s - \bar B_s$ and $B_d - \bar B_d$ mixing. The mass and width differences in the $B_s$ system read $ ΔM_s^{\rm SM} = (17.3 \pm 2.6) ps^{-1}$ and $ΔΓ_s^{\rm SM}= (0.087 \pm 0.021) ps^{-1}$, respectively. The CP asymmetries in flavour-specific decays are $a_{\rm fs}^{s,\rm SM} = (1.9 \pm 0.3) \cdot 10^{-5}$ and $a_{\rm fs}^{d,\rm SM} = - (4.1 \pm 0.6) \cdot 10^{-4}$. We further critically discuss the sensitivity of $ΔΓ_d$ to new physics and the uncertainties in the relation between $ΔΓ_s$ and the branching fraction of $B_s \to D_s^{(*)}{}^+ D_s^{(*)}{}^-$. Then we present a numerical update of the average width $Γ_s$ in the $B_s$ system and correlate $Γ_s$ with the $B^+$-$B_d$ lifetime ratio. Finally we summarise the key results of our recent global analysis with the CKMfitter collaboration addressing new physics in $B - \bar B$-mixing. In an appropriately defined scenario parametrising new physics in $B - \bar B$-mixing by two complex parameters $Δ_d$ and $Δ_s$ the Standard-Model point {$Δ_d=Δ_s=1$} is disfavoured by 3.6 standard deviations.

Phenomenological consequences of radiative flavor violation in the MSSM

In this article we investigate the consequences of radiative flavor violation (RFV) in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). In this framework the small off-diagonal elements of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix and the small quark masses of the first two generations are generated from the trilinear supersymmetry-breaking terms. The impact of RFV on flavor-physics observables is studied in detail. We focus on the limiting cases in which the CKM matrix is either generated in the down-sector, i.e. by the soft SUSY-breaking mass insertions delta^dLR_i3 (i=1,2), or in the up-quark sector, i.e. by the mass insertions delta^uLR_i3. In the first case we find an enhancement of b->s gamma, which constrains the allowed range of sparticle masses (Fig. 3). In addition, neutral Higgs penguins significantly contribute to B_s,d->mu^+mu^- and, if also delta^dLR_32 is different from zero, these Higgs effects are capable of explaining the observed CP phase in the B_s system. If, on the other hand, the CKM generation takes place in the up-sector, |epsilon_K| receives additional positive contributions enforcing large squark and gluino masses (see Fig. 8). In this case also the rare decay K->pi nu nu receives sizable contributions. In conclusion we find that for SUSY masses around 1 TeV RFV is an interesting alternative to Minimal Flavor Violation (MFV).

The MSSM with a softly broken U(2)^3 flavor symmetry

In this article we review the phenomenological consequences of radiative flavor-violation (RFV) in the MSSM. In the model under consideration the U(3)^3 flavor symmetry of the gauge sector is broken in a first step to U(2)^3 by the top and bottom Yukawa couplings of the superpotential (and possibly also by the bilinear SUSY-breaking terms). In a second step the remaining U(2)^3 flavor symmetry is softly broken by the trilinear A-terms in order to obtain the measured quark masses and the CKM matrix of the Standard Model (SM) at low energies. The phenomenological implications of this model depend on the actual choice of the SUSY breaking A-terms. If the CKM matrix is generated in the down sector (by A^d), Bs->mu^+mu^- receives non-decoupling contributions from Higgs penguins which become important already for moderate values of tan(beta). Also the Bs mixing amplitude can be significantly modified compared to the SM prediction including a potential induction of a new CP-violating phase (which is not possible in the MSSM with MFV).

Yukawa coupling and anomalous magnetic moment of the muon: an update for the LHC era

We study the interplay between a soft muon Yukawa coupling generated radiatively with the trilinear A-terms of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) and the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. In the absence of a tree-level muon Yukawa coupling the lightest smuon mass is predicted to be in the range between 750 GeV and 2700 GeV at 2 sigma, if the bino mass M_1 is below 1 TeV. Therefore, a detection of a smuon (in conjunction with a sub-TeV bino) at the LHC would directly imply a non-zero muon Yukawa coupling in the MSSM superpotential. Inclusion of slepton flavor mixing could in principle lower the mass of one smuon-like slepton below 750 GeV. However, the experimental bounds on radiative lepton decays instead strengthen the lower mass bound, with larger effects for smaller M_1, We also extend the analysis to the electron case and find that a light selectron close to the current experimental search limit may prove the MSSM electron Yukawa coupling to be non-zero.

Chirally enhanced corrections to FCNC processes in the generic MSSM

Chirally enhanced supersymmetric QCD corrections to FCNC processes are investigated in the framework of the MSSM with generic sources of flavor violation. These corrections arise from flavor-changing self-energy diagrams and can be absorbed into a finite renormalization of the squark-quark-gluino vertex. In this way enhanced two-loop and even three-loop diagrams can be efficiently included into a leading-order (LO) calculation. Our corrections substantially change the values of the parameters delta^{d,LL}_{23}, delta^{d,LR}_{23}, delta^{d,RL}_{23}, and delta^{d,RR}_{23} extracted from Br[B->X_s gamma] if tan(beta) is large. We find stronger (weaker) constraints compared to the LO result for negative (positive) values of mu. The constraints on delta^{d,LR,RL}_{13} and delta^{d,LR,RL}_{23} from B_d mixing and B_s mixing change drastically if the third-generation squark masses differ from those of the first two generations. K mixing is more strongly affected by the chirally enhanced loop diagrams and even sub-percent deviations from degenerate down and strange squark masses lead to profoundly stronger constraints on delta^{d,LR,RL}_{12}.

Flavor physics within and beyond the Standard Model

I review recent progress in theoretical calculations related to the CKM unitarity triangle. After briefly discussing hints for new physics in B_d-B_d-bar mixing and B_s-B_s-bar mixing I present three topics of MSSM flavor physics: First I discuss new tan-beta-enhanced radiative corrections to flavor-changing neutral current (FCNC) amplitudes which go beyond the familiar Higgs-mediated FCNC diagrams and may enhance the mixing-induced CP asymmetry in B_d -> phi K_S. The second topic is a reappraisal of the idea that flavor violation originates from the soft supersymmetry-breaking terms. Finally I discuss how mu -> e gamma can be used to constrain the flavor structure of the dimension-5 Yukawa interactions which appear in realistic grand unified theories.

Lepton flavour violation in the MSSM

We derive new constraints on the quantities delta_{XY}^{ij}, X,Y=L,R, which parametrise the flavour-off-diagonal terms of the charged slepton mass matrix in the MSSM. Considering mass and anomalous magnetic moment of the electron we obtain the bound |delta^{13}_{LL} delta^{13}_{RR}|<0.1 for tan beta=50, which involves the poorly constrained element delta^{13}_{RR}. We improve the predictions for the decays tau -> mu gamma, tau -> e gamma and mu -> e gamma by including two-loop corrections which are enhanced if tan beta is large. The finite renormalisation of the PMNS matrix from soft SUSY-breaking terms is derived and applied to the charged-Higgs-lepton vertex. We find that the experimental bound on BR(tau -> e gamma) severely limits the size of the MSSM loop correction to the PMNS element U_{e3}, which is important for the proper interpretation of a future U_{e3} measurement. Subsequently we confront our new values for delta^{ij}_{LL} with a GUT analysis. Further, we include the effects of dimension-5 Yukawa terms, which are needed to fix the Yukawa unification of the first two generations. If universal supersymmetry breaking occurs above the GUT scale, we find the flavour structure of the dimension-5 Yukawa couplings tightly constrained by mu -> e gamma.

Resummation of tan-beta-enhanced supersymmetric loop corrections beyond the decoupling limit

We study the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model with Minimal Flavour Violation for the case of a large parameter tanbeta and arbitrary values of the supersymmetric mass parameters. We derive several resummation formulae for tanbeta-enhanced loop corrections, which were previously only known in the limit of supersymmetric masses far above the electroweak scale. Studying first the renormalisation-scheme dependence of the resummation formula for the bottom Yukawa coupling, we clarify the use of the sbottom mixing angle in the supersymmetric loop factor Delta_b. As a new feature, we find tan-beta-enhanced loop-induced flavour-changing neutral current (FCNC) couplings of gluinos and neutralinos which in turn give rise to new effects in the renormalisation of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix and in FCNC processes of B mesons. For the chromomagnetic Wilson coefficient C_8, these gluino-squark loops can be of the same size as the known chargino-squark contribution. We discuss the phenomenological consequences for the mixing-induced CP asymmetry in B_d -> phi K_S. We further quote formulae for B_s -> mu^+ mu^- and B_s-B_s-bar mixing valid beyond the decoupling limit and find a new contribution affecting the phase of the B_s-B_s-bar mixing amplitude. Our resummed tan-beta-enhanced effects are cast into Feynman rules permitting an easy implementation in automatic calculations.

Supersymmetric renormalisation of the CKM matrix and new constraints on the squark mass matrices

We compute the finite renormalisation of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix induced by gluino-squark diagrams in the MSSM with non-minimal sources of flavour violation. Subsequently we derive bounds on the flavour-off-diagonal elements of the squark mass matrices by requiring that the radiative corrections to the CKM elements do not exceed the experimental values. Our constraints on the associated dimensionless quantities delta^{d LR}_{ij}, j>i, are stronger than the bounds from flavour-changing neutral current (FCNC) processes if gluino and squarks are heavier than 500 GeV. Our bound on |delta^{u LR}_{12}| is stronger than the FCNC bound from D-D-bar mixing for superpartner masses above 900 GeV. We further find a useful bound on |delta_{13}^{u LR}|, for which no FCNC constraint is known. Our results imply that it is still possible to generate all observed flavour violation from the soft supersymmetry-breaking terms without conflicting with present-day data on FCNC processes. We suggest that a flavour symmetry renders the Yukawa sector flavour-diagonal and the trilinear supersymmetry-breaking terms are the spurion fields breaking this flavour symmetry. We further derive the dominant supersymmetric radiative corrections to the couplings of charged Higgs bosons and charginos to quarks and squarks.

Gluino-mediated FCNCs in the MSSM with large tan(beta)

We present results of our study of tan(beta)-enhanced loop corrections in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) with Minimal Flavour Violation (MFV). We demonstrate that these corrections induce flavour changing neutral current (FCNC) gluino couplings which have a large impact on the Wilson coefficient C_8 of the chromomagnetic operator. To illustrate the phenomenological consequences of this gluino-squark contribution to C_8, we briefly discuss its effect on the mixing-induced CP asymmetry in the decay B_d -> phi K_S.

The supersymmetric Higgs sector and B-Bbar mixing for large tan beta

We match the Higgs sector of the most general flavour breaking and CP violating minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) onto a generic two-Higgs-doublet model, paying special attention to the definition of tan beta in the effective theory. In particular no tan beta-enhanced loop corrections appear in the relation to tan beta defined in the DRbar scheme in the MSSM. The corrections to the Higgs-mediated flavour-changing amplitudes which result from this matching are especially relevant for the B_d and B_s mass differences dM_s,d for minimal flavour violation, where the superficially leading contribution vanishes. We give a symmetry argument to explain this cancellation and perform a systematic study of all Higgs-mediated effects, including Higgs loops. The corrections to dM_s are at most 7% for mu>0 and M_A < 600 if constraints from other observables are taken into account. For mu<0 they can be larger, but are always less than about 20%. Contrary to recent claims we do not find numerically large contributions here, nor do we find any tan beta-enhanced contributions from loop corrections to the Higgs potential in B^+ -> tau^+ nu or B -> X_s gamma. We further update supersymmetric loop corrections to the Yukawa couplings, where we include all possible CP-violating phases and correct errors in the literature. The possible presence of CP-violating phases generated by Higgs exchange diagrams is briefly discussed as well. Finally we provide improved values for the bag factors P^VLL_1, P^LR_2, and P^SLL_1 at the electroweak scale.

Bounds on new physics from B_s mixing

I summarize the observables constraining the B_s-B_s-bar mixing complex and present a new calculation of the element Gamma_{12}^s of the decay matrix. Gamma_{12}^s enters the prediction of the width difference Delta Gamma_s, for which we obtain Delta Gamma_s^SM = 0.088 +/- 0.017 ps^(-1), if no new physics enters B_s-B_s-bar mixing. Applying our formulae to Tevatron data we find a deviation of the B_s-B_s-bar mixing phase phi_s from its Standard Model value by 2 standard deviations. I stress that present data do not give any information on the sign of Delta Gamma_s.

Theoretical update of Bs-Bs-bar mixing

We update the theory predictions for the mass difference $\dm_s$, the width difference $\dg_s$ and the CP asymmetry in flavour-specific decays, $a_{\rm fs}^{s}$, for the \bbs system. In particular we present a new expression for the element $Γ_{12}^s$ of the decay matrix, which enters the predictions of $\dg_s$ and $a_{\rm fs}^{s}$. To this end we introduce a new operator basis, which reduces the troublesome sizes of the $1/m_b$ and $α_s$ corrections and diminishes the hadronic uncertainty in $\dg_s/\dm_s$ considerably. Logarithms of the charm quark mass are summed to all orders. We find $\dg_s/\dm_s= (49.7 \pm 9.4) \cdot 10^{-4}$ and $\dg_s =(f_{B_s}/240 {\rm MeV})^2 [(0.105 \pm 0.016) B + (0.024 \pm 0.004) \tilde{B}_S' - 0.027 \pm 0.015] {ps}^{-1}$ in terms of the bag parameters $B$, $\tilde{B}_S'$ in the NDR scheme and the decay constant $f_{B_s}$. The improved result for $Γ_{12}^s$ also permits the extraction of the CP-violating \bbms phase from $a_{\rm fs}^{s}$ with better accuracy. We show how the measurements of $ΔM_s$, $ΔΓ_s$, $a_{\rm fs}^{s}$, $A_{\rm CP}^{\rm mix}(B_s\to J/ψϕ)$ and other observables can be efficiently combined to constrain new physics. Applying our new formulae to data from the DØexperiment, we find a 2$σ$ deviation of the \bbms phase from its Standard Model value. We also briefly update the theory predictions for the \bbd system and find $\dg_d/\dm_d = \lt(52.6 \epm{11.5}{12.8} \rt) \cdot 10^{-4}$ and $a_{\rm fs}^d = \lt(-4.8\epm{1.0}{1.2} \rt) \cdot 10^{-4}$ in the Standard Model.

Higgs Sector of the Minimal Left-Right Symmetric Model

We perform an exhaustive analysis of the most general Higgs sector of the minimal left-right symmetric model (MLRM). We find that the CP properties of the vacuum state are connected to the Higgs spectrum: if CP is broken spontaneously, the MLRM does not approach the Standard Model in the limit of a decoupling left-right symmetry breaking scale. Depending on the size of the CP phases scenarios with extra non-decoupling flavor-violating doublet Higgses or very light SU(2) triplet Higgses emerge, both of which are ruled out by phenomenology. For zero CP phases the non-standard Higgses decouple only if a very unnatural fine-tuning condition is fulfilled. We also discuss generalizations to a non-minimal Higgs sector.

In Pursuit of New Physics with B_s Decays

The presence of a sizeable CP-violating phase in B_s^0-B_s^0-bar mixing would be an unambiguous signal of physics beyond the Standard Model. We analyse various possibilities to detect such a new phase considering both tagged and untagged decays. The effects of a sizeable width difference Delta Gamma between the B_s mass eigenstates, on which the untagged analyses rely, are included in all formulae. A novel method to find this phase from simple measurements of lifetimes and branching ratios in untagged decays is proposed. This method does not involve two-exponential fits, which require much larger statistics. For the tagged decays, an outstanding role is played by the observables of the time-dependent angular distribution of the B_s -> J/psi [-> l^+ l^-] ϕ[-> K^+K^-] decay products. We list the formulae needed for the angular analysis in the presence of both a new CP-violating phase and a sizeable Delta Gamma, and propose methods to remove a remaining discrete ambiguity in the new phase. This phase can therefore be determined in an unambiguous way.

B_{s,d} -> l+ l- in a Two-Higgs-Doublet Model

We compute the branching fractions of B_{s,d} -> l+ l- in the type-II two-Higgs-doublet model with large tan(beta). We find that the parameters of the neutral Higgs sector of the two-Higgs-doublet model cancel in the result, so that the branching fractions depend only on the charged Higgs mass and tan(beta). For large values of tan(beta) and a charged Higgs mass above the bound from b -> s gamma, we find that the branching fractions can be enhanced by up to an order of magnitude or suppressed by up to a factor of two compared to the Standard Model result. We point out that previous calculations in the literature are gauge-dependent due to the omission of an important diagram, which gives the dominant contribution in the 't Hooft-Feynman gauge. We have analyzed in detail the region of the (M_{H^+}, tan(beta)) plane to be probed by searches for B_s -> mu+ mu- in Run II of the Tevatron. Since the branching fraction increases like tan^4(beta), this decay mode is complementary to b -> s gamma and efficiently probes the large tan(beta) region. For tan(beta)=60, an integrated luminosity of 20 fb^{-1} in an extended Run II will probe charged Higgs masses up to 260 GeV, if the background to B_s -> mu+ mu- is small. For the same value of tan(beta), the LHC may be able to explore charged Higgs masses up to 1 TeV using this decay.

Penguin Diagrams, Charmless B-Decays and the ``Missing Charm Puzzle''

We calculate the contributions of penguin diagrams with internal u or c quarks to various inclusive charmless B-decay rates. Further we analyze the influence of the chromomagnetic dipole operator Q_8 on these rates. We find that the rates corresponding to B-bar --> X_{u u-bar s}, B-bar --> X_{d d-bar s}, B-bar --> X_{s s-bar s}, B-bar --> X_{s s-bar d} and B --> X_{d d-bar d} are dominated by the new penguin contributions. The contributions of Q_8 sizably diminish these rates. Despite of an increase of the total charmless decay rate by 36 % the new contributions are not large enough to explain the charm deficit observed by ARGUS and CLEO. We predict n_c=1.33 +/- 0.06 for the average number of charmed particles per B-decay in the Standard Model. Then the hypothesis of an enhancement of the chromomagnetic dipole coefficient C_8 by new physics contributions is analyzed. We perform a model independent fit of C_8 to the experimental data. If the CKM structure of the new physics contribution is the same as in the Standard Model, |C_8(M_W)| must be enhanced by a factor of 9 to 16 in order to explain the observed charm deficit.

Probing penguin coefficients with the lifetime ratio tau(B_s)/tau(B_d)

We calculate penguin contributions to the lifetime splitting between the B_s and the B_d meson. In the Standard Model the penguin effects are found to be opposite in sign, but of similar magnitude as the contributions of the current-current operators, despite of the smallness of the penguin coefficients. We predict tau(B_s)/tau(B_d) -1 = ( -1.2 +/- 10.0 ) * 10^(-3) * (f_{B_s}/190 MeV)^2 where the error stems from hadronic uncertainties. Since penguin coefficients are sensitive to new physics and poorly tested experimentally, we analyze the possibility to extract them from a future precision measurement of tau(B_s)/tau(B_d). Anticipating progress in the determination of the hadronic parameters epsilon_1, epsilon_2 and f_{B_s}/f_{B_d} we find that the coefficient C_4 can be extracted with an uncertainty of order |Delta C_4|= 0.1 from the double ratio (tau(B_s)-tau(B_d))/(tau(B^+)-tau(B_d)), if |epsilon_1-epsilon_2| is not too small.

Evanescent Operators, Scheme Dependences and Double Insertions

The anomalous dimension matrix of dimensionally regularized four-quark operators is known to be affected by evanescent operators, which vanish in $D=4$ dimensions. Their definition, however, is not unique, as one can always redefine them by adding a term proportional to $(D-4)$ times a physical operator. In the present paper we compare different definitions used in the literature and find that they correspond to different renormalization schemes in the physical operator basis. The scheme transformation formulae for the Wilson coefficients and the anomalous dimension matrix are derived in the next-to-leading order. We further investigate the proper treatment of evanescent operators in processes appearing at second order in the effective four-fermion interaction such as particle-antiparticle mixing, rare hadron decays or inclusive decays.

Higgs Sector Renormalization Group in the MS-bar and OMS Scheme

We discuss different aspects of the Higgs self-interaction in the MS-bar and the on-mass-shell (OMS) scheme. The running coupling λ(μ) is investigated in great detail. The three-loop coefficient of the β-function in the OMS scheme is derived, and the three-loop running coupling is calculated. The breakdown of perturbation theory for large Higgs masses M_H is analyzed in three physical observables for which two-loop results are known. Requiring the dependence on the renormalization scale to diminish order-by-order in λ, we find that perturbation theory breaks down for M_H=O(700 GeV) in Higgs decays. Similarly, M_H must be smaller than O(400 GeV) for perturbatively calculated cross sections to be trustworthy up to cm energies of O(2 TeV). If the Higgs sector shall be perturbative up to the GUT scale, the Higgs must be lighter than O(150 GeV). For the two-loop observables examined, the apparent convergence of the perturbation series is better in the OMS scheme than in the MS-bar scheme.

Indirect CP-Violation in the Neutral Kaon System Beyond Leading Logarithms

We have calculated the short distance QCD coefficient η_3 of the effective |ΔS|=2-hamiltonian in the next-to-leading order. Since now all coefficients η_1, η_2 and η_3 are known beyond the leading log approximation, one can achieve a much higher precision in the theoretical analysis of ε_K. The measured value for ε_K$ yields a lower bound on each of |V_{cb}|, |V_{ub}/V_{cb}|, the top quark mass $m_t$ and the non- perturbative parameter B_K as a function of the remaining three quantities. We discuss the implications on the CKM phase δ, |V_{td}| and the key quantity for all CP-violating processes, Im λ_t = Im [V^*_{ts} V_{td}]. These quantities and the improved Wolfenstein parameters \barρand \barηare tabulated and the shape of the unitarity triangle is discussed. We compare the range for |V_{td}| with the one obtained from the analysis of B^0--\bar{B^0} mixing. For 0.037 \leq |V_{cb}| \leq 0.043, 0.06 \leq |V_{ub}/V_{cb}| \leq 0.10 and 0.65 \leq B_K \leq 0.85 we find from a combined analysis of ε_K and the B^0--\bar{B^0} mixing paramater x_d: 49^{\circ} \leq δ\leq 146^{\circ}, 7.4 \cdot 10^{-3} \leq |V_{td}| \leq 12.4 \cdot 10^{-3}, 0.85 \cdot 10^{-4} \leq \imag λ_t \leq 1.60 \cdot 10^{-4}, -0.36 \leq \barρ\leq 0.28 and 0.21 \leq \barη\leq 0.44. We predict the mass difference of the $B_s^0$ system to lie in the range 6.5 ps^{-1} \leq Δm_{B_s} \leq 28 ps^{-1}. Finally we have a 1995 look at the K_L--K_S mass difference.
