LIDL: Local Intrinsic Dimension Estimation Using Approximate Likelihood

Most of the existing methods for estimating the local intrinsic dimension of a data distribution do not scale well to high-dimensional data. Many of them rely on a non-parametric nearest neighbors approach which suffers from the curse of dimensionality. We attempt to address that challenge by proposing a novel approach to the problem: Local Intrinsic Dimension estimation using approximate Likelihood (LIDL). Our method relies on an arbitrary density estimation method as its subroutine and hence tries to sidestep the dimensionality challenge by making use of the recent progress in parametric neural methods for likelihood estimation. We carefully investigate the empirical properties of the proposed method, compare them with our theoretical predictions, and show that LIDL yields competitive results on the standard benchmarks for this problem and that it scales to thousands of dimensions. What is more, we anticipate this approach to improve further with the continuing advances in the density estimation literature.

Sparsifying Transformer Models with Trainable Representation Pooling

We propose a novel method to sparsify attention in the Transformer model by learning to select the most-informative token representations during the training process, thus focusing on the task-specific parts of an input. A reduction of quadratic time and memory complexity to sublinear was achieved due to a robust trainable top-$k$ operator. Our experiments on a challenging long document summarization task show that even our simple baseline performs comparably to the current SOTA, and with trainable pooling, we can retain its top quality, while being $1.8\times$ faster during training, $4.5\times$ faster during inference, and up to $13\times$ more computationally efficient in the decoder.

Asymptotic Schur orthogonality in hyperbolic groups with application to monotony

We prove a generalization of Schur orthogonality relations for certain classes of representations of Gromov hyperbolic groups. We apply the obtained results to show that representations of non-abelian free groups associated to the Patterson-Sullivan measures corresponding to a wide class of invariant metrics on the group are monotonous in the sense introduced by Kuhn and Steger. This in particular includes representations associated to harmonic measures of a wide class of random walks.

Boundary representations of hyperbolic groups

Let $Γ$ be a Gromov hyperbolic group, endowed with an arbitrary left-invariant hyperbolic metric, quasi-isometric to a word metric. The action of $Γ$ on its boundary $\partialΓ$ endowed with the Patterson-Sullivan measure $μ$, after an appropriate normalization, gives rise to a faithful unitary representation of $Γ$ on $L^2(\partialΓ,μ)$. We show that these representations are irreducible, and give criteria for their unitary equivalence in terms of the metrics on $Γ$. Special cases include quasi-regular representations on the Poisson boundary.

Factoriality of Hecke-von Neumann algebras of right-angled Coxeter groups

The Hecke algebra $\mathbb{C}_q[W]$ of a Coxter group $W$, associated to parameter $q$, can be completed to a von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{N}_q(W)$. We study such algebras in case where $W$ is right-angled. We determine the range of $q$ for which $\mathcal{N}_q(W)$ is a factor, i.e. has trivial center. Moreover, in case of nontrivial center, we prove a result allowing to decompose $\mathcal{N}_q(W)$ into a finite direct sum of factors.

The Neretin groups

This is the extended version of the talk we gave during the Arbeitsgemeinschaft on totally disconnected locally compact groups, held in Oberwolfach in October 2014. We give the definition of the Neretin group of spheromorphisms of the infinite $q$-regular tree, and describe its natural totally disconnected group topology, which is not the one that usually appears as the first guess. We also present the proof of simplicity due to Kapoudjian. We do not make any claims concerning the originality of the presented results.

Property of rapid decay for extensions of compactly generated groups

In the article we settle down the problem of permanence of property RD under group extensions. We show that if $1\to N\to G\to Q\to 1$ is a short exact sequence of compactly generated groups such that $Q$ has property RD, and $N$ has property RD with respect to the restriction of a word-length on $G$, then $G$ has property RD. We also generalize the result of Ji and Schweitzer stating that locally compact groups with property RD are unimodular. Namely, we show that any automorphism of a locally compact group with property RD which distorts distances subexponentially, preserves the Haar measure.

The problem of zero divisors in convolution algebras of supersolvable Lie groups

We prove a variant of the Titchmarsh convolution theorem for simply connected supersolvable Lie groups, namely we show that the convolution algebras of compactly supported continuous functions and compactly supported finite measures on such groups do not contain zero divisors. This can be also viewed as a topological version of the zero divisor conjecture of Kaplansky.

Analogs of principal series representations for Thompson's groups $F$ and $T$

We define series of representations of the Thompson's groups $F$ and $T$, which are analogs of principal series representations of $SL(2,\R)$. We show that they are irreducible and classify them up to unitary equivalence. We also prove that they are different from representations induced from finite-dimensional representations of stabilizers of points under natural actions of $F$ and $T$ on the unit interval and the unit circle, respectively.
