Vacuum energy in effective field theory of general relativity

It is shown to all orders of perturbation theory that in the effective field theory of general relativity the condition of vanishing of the vacuum energy leads to the same value of the cosmological constant, viewed as a parameter of the effective Lagrangian, as obtained by demanding the consistency of the effective field theory in Minkowski background. The resulting effective action is characterized by the cosmological constant term that vanishes exactly.

Nucleon-nucleon scattering up to next-to-next-to-leading order in manifestly Lorentz-invariant chiral effective field theory: peripheral phases

We study the nucleon-nucleon interaction up to next-to-next-to-leading order using time-ordered perturbation theory in the framework of manifestly Lorentz-invariant chiral effective field theory. We present the two-pion exchange contribution at one-loop level, which is consistent with the corresponding non-relativistic expressions in the large-nucleon-mass limit. Using the Born series truncated at one-loop order, we calculate the phase shifts and mixing angles of the partial waves with the angular momentum $l\geq 2$. Comparing with the results of non-relativistic formulation, we find an improved description of the phase shifts for some $D$ waves such as the $^3D_3$ one. For the other partial waves, both approaches show the globally similar results.

On the definition of local spatial densities in hadrons

We show that the matrix element of a local operator between hadronic states gives rise to an unambiguous definition of the associated spatial density. As an explicit example, we consider the charge density of a spinless particle in the rest and moving frames and clarify its relationship to the electric form factor. Our results suggest that the interpretation of the spatial densities of local operators and their moments such as the mean square charge radius needs to be revised.

Semi-local nuclear forces from chiral EFT: State-of-the-art & challenges

Recently, a new generation of nuclear forces has been developed in the framework of chiral EFT. An important feature of these potentials is a novel semi-local regularization approach that combines the advantages of a local regulator for long-range interactions with the convenience of an angle-independent nonlocal regulator for contact interactions. The authors discuss the key features of the semi-local two-nucleon potentials and demonstrate their outstanding performance in the two-nucleon sector by showing selected results up to fifth order in the EFT expansion. Also reviewed are applications to heavier systems, which are currently limited to third chiral order. This limitation reflects the conceptual difficulty in constructing a consistently regularized many-body forces and current operators and affects all currently available interactions. The authors outline possible ways to tackle this problem and discuss future directions in the field.

Chiral theory of $ρ$-meson gravitational form factors

The low-energy chiral effective field theory of vector mesons and Goldstone bosons in external gravitational field is considered. The energy-momentum tensor is obtained and the gravitational form factors of the $ρ$-meson are calculated up to next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion. This amounts to considering tree-level and one-loop order diagrams. The chiral expansion of the form factors at zero momentum transfer as well as of the slope parameters is worked out. Also, the long-range behaviour of the energy and internal force distributions is obtained and analysed.

Insights into $Z_b(10610)$ and $Z_b(10650)$ from dipion transitions from $Υ(10860)$

The dipion transitions $Υ(10860)\toπ^+π^-Υ(nS)$ ($n=1,2,3$) are studied in the framework of a unitary and analytic coupled-channel formalism previously developed for analysing experimental data on the bottomoniumlike states $Z_b(10610)$ and $Z_b(10650)$ [Phys. Rev. D 98, 074023 (2018)] and predicting the properties of their spin partners [Phys. Rev. D 99, 094013 (2019)]. In this work we use a relatively simple but realistic version of this approach, where the scattering and production amplitudes are constructed employing only short-ranged interactions between the open- and hidden-flavour channels consistent with the constraints from heavy quark spin symmetry, for an extended analysis of the experimental line shapes. In particular, the transitions from the $Υ(10860)$ to the final states $ππh_b(mP)$ ($m=1,2$) and $πB^{(*)}\bar B^* $ already studied before, are now augmented by the $Υ(10860)\toπ^+π^-Υ(nS)$ final states ($n=1,2,3$). This is achieved by employing dispersion theory to account for the final state interaction of the $ππ$ subsystem including its coupling to the $K\bar K$ channel. Fits to the two-dimensional Dalitz plots for the $π^+π^-Υ$ final states were performed. Two real subtraction constants are adjusted to achieve the best description of the Dalitz plot for each $Υ(nS)$ $(n=1,2,3)$ while all the parameters related to the properties of the $Z_b$'s are kept fixed from the previous study. A good overall description of the data for all $Υ(10860)\toπ^+π^-Υ(nS)$ channels achieved in this work provides additional strong support for the molecular interpretation of the $Z_b$ states.

Is $Z_{cs}(3982)$ a molecular partner of $Z_c(3900)$ and $Z_c(4020)$ states?

We perform an effective-field-theory-based coupled-channel analysis of the recent BES III data on the $e^+e^-$ annihilation into the final state $K^+(D_s^-D^{*0}+D_s^{*-}D^0)$ in a wide energy range and extract the poles responsible for the formation of the $Z_{cs}(3982)$. We identify two scenarios which provide a similar description of the experimental mass distributions but result in utterly different predictions for the spin partners of the $Z_{cs}(3982)$: although both scenarios are consistent with the $Z_{cs}$ as a $SU(3)$ partner of the $Z_c(3900)$, the $Z_c(4020)$ appears naturally as a spin partner of these states only in one of them (fit 1) while in the other (fit 2) its nature has to be different. Also, the $Z_{cs}(3982)$ has a $J^{P}=1^+$ spin partner near the $\bar D_s^* D^*$ threshold in fit 1, while no such state exists in fit 2. We predict the $\bar{D}_s^*D^*$ invariant mass distribution in the $J^{P}=1^+$ channel for the reaction $e^+e^-\to K^+D_s^{*-}D^{*0}$ and argue that this line shape can be used to distinguish between the two scenarios once data in this channel are available.

Nucleon-nucleon interaction in chiral EFT with a finite cutoff: explicit perturbative renormalization at next-to-leading order

We present a study of two-nucleon scattering in chiral effective field theory with a finite cutoff to next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion. In the proposed scheme, the contributions of the lowest-order interaction to the scattering amplitude are summed up to an arbitrary order, while the corrections beyond leading order are iterated only once. We consider a general form of the regulator for the leading-order potential including local and non-local structures. The main objective of the paper is to address formal aspects of renormalizability within the considered scheme. In particular, we provide a rigorous proof, valid to all orders in the iterations of the leading-order potential, that power-counting breaking terms originating from the integration regions with momenta of the order of the cutoff can be absorbed into the renormalization of the low energy constants of the leading contact interactions. We also demonstrate that the cutoff dependence of the scattering amplitude can be reduced by perturbatively subtracting the regulator artifacts at next-to-leading order. The obtained numerical results for phase shifts in $P$- and higher partial waves confirm the applicability of our scheme for nucleon-nucleon scattering.

Precision determination of pion-nucleon coupling constants using effective field theory

The pion-nucleon coupling constants determine the strength of the long-range nuclear forces and play a fundamental part in our understanding of nuclear physics. While the charged- and neutral-pion couplings to protons and neutrons are expected to be very similar, owing to the approximate isospin symmetry of the strong interaction, the different masses of the up- and down-quarks and electromagnetic effects may result in their slightly different values. Despite previous attempts to extract these coupling constants from different systems, our knowledge of their values is still deficient. In this Letter we present a precision determination of these fundamental observables with fully controlled uncertainties from neutron-proton and proton-proton scattering data using chiral effective field theory. To achieve this goal, we use a novel methodology based on the Bayesian approach and perform, for the first time, a full-fledged partial-wave analysis of nucleon-nucleon scattering up to the pion production threshold in the framework of chiral effective field theory, including a complete treatment of isospin-breaking effects and our own determination of mutually consistent data. The resulting values of the pion-nucleon coupling constants are accurate at the percent level and show no significant charge dependence. These results mark an important step towards developing a precision theory of nuclear forces and structure.

Applications of the chiral potential with the semi-local regularization in momentum space to the disintegration processes

We apply the chiral potential with the momentum space semi-local regularization to the $^2$H and $^3$He photodisintegration processes and to the (anti)neutrino induced deuteron breakup reactions. Specifically, the differential cross section, the photon analyzing power and the final proton polarization have been calculated for the deuteron photodisintegration at the photon energies 30 MeV and 100 MeV. For the $^3$He photodisintegration predictions for the semi-inclusive and exclusive differential cross sections are presented for the photon energies up to 120 MeV. The total cross section is calculated for the (anti)neutrino disintegrations of the deuteron for the (anti)neutrino energies below 200 MeV. The predictions based on the Argonne V18 potential or on the older chiral force with regularization applied in coordinate space are used for comparison. Using the fifth order chiral nucleon-nucleon potential supplemented with dominant contributions from the sixth order allows us to obtain converged predictions for the regarded reactions and observables. Our results based on the newest semi-local chiral potentials show even smaller cutoff dependence for the considered electroweak observables than the previously reported ones with a coordinate-space regulator. However, some of the studied polarization observables in the deuteron photodisintegration process reveal more sensitivity to the regulator value than the unpolarized cross section. The chiral potential regularized semi-locally in momentum space yields also fast convergence of results with the chiral order. These features make the used potential a high quality tool to study electroweak processes.

Elastic and inelastic pion-nucleon scattering to fourth order in chiral perturbation theory

We extend our previous study of elastic pion-nucleon scattering in the framework of chiral perturbation theory by performing a combined analysis of the reactions $πN \to πN$ and $πN \to ππN$. The calculation is carried out to fourth order in the chiral expansion using the heavy baryon approach and the covariant formulation supplemented with a modified version of the extended on-mass-shell renormalization scheme. We demonstrate that a combined fit to experimental data in both channels leads to a reduced amount of correlations between the low-energy constants. A satisfactory description of the experimental data in both channels is obtained, which is further improved upon including tree-level contributions of the $Δ$(1232) resonance. We also explore a possibility of using the empirical information about $πN$ subthreshold parameters obtained recently by means of the Roy-Steiner equations to stabilize the fits.

Extraction of the neutron charge radius from a precision calculation of the deuteron structure radius

We present a high-accuracy calculation of the deuteron structure radius in chiral effective field theory. Our analysis employs the state-of-the-art semilocal two-nucleon potentials and takes into account two-body contributions to the charge density operators up to fifth order in the chiral expansion. The strength of the fifth-order short-range two-body contribution to the charge density operator is adjusted to the experimental data on the deuteron charge form factor. A detailed error analysis is performed by propagating the statistical uncertainties of the low-energy constants entering the two-nucleon potentials and by estimating errors from the truncation of the chiral expansion as well as from uncertainties in the nucleon form factors. Using the predicted value for the deuteron structure radius together with the very accurate atomic data for the difference of the deuteron and proton charge radii we, for the first time, extract the charge radius of the neutron from light nuclei. The extracted value reads $r_n^2 = - 0.106 \substack{ +0.007\\ -0.005\\} \, \text{fm}^2$ and its magnitude is about $1.7σ$ smaller than the current value given by the Particle Data Group. In addition, given the high accuracy of the calculated deuteron charge form factor and its careful and systematic error analysis, our results open the way for an accurate determination of the nucleon form factors from elastic electron-deuteron scattering data measured at the Mainz Microtron and other experimental facilities.

High-accuracy calculation of the deuteron charge and quadrupole form factors in chiral effective field theory

We present a comprehensive analysis of the deuteron charge and quadrupole form factors based on the latest two-nucleon potentials and charge density operators derived in chiral effective field theory. The single- and two-nucleon contributions to the charge density are expressed in terms of the proton and neutron form factors, for which the most up-to-date empirical parametrizations are employed. By adjusting the fifth-order short-range terms in the two-nucleon charge density operator to reproduce the world data on the momentum-transfer dependence of the deuteron charge and quadrupole form factors, we predict the values of the structure radius and the quadrupole moment of the deuteron: $r_{\rm str}=1.9729\substack{+0.0015\\ -0.0012}\ \text{fm},\ Q_d=0.2854\substack{+0.0038\\ -0.0017}\ \text{fm}^2. $ A comprehensive and systematic analysis of various sources of uncertainty in our predictions is performed. Following the strategy advocated in our recent publication Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 082501 (2020), we employ the extracted structure radius together with the accurate atomic data for the deuteron-proton mean-square charge radii difference to update the determination of the neutron charge radius, for which we find: $r_n^2=-0.105\substack{+0.005\\ -0.006} \, \text{fm}^2$. Given the observed rapid convergence of the deuteron form factors in the momentum-transfer range of $Q \simeq 1-2.5$ fm$^{-1}$, we argue that this intermediate-energy domain is particularly sensitive to the details of the nucleon form factors and can be used to test different parametrizations.

How to renormalize integral equations with singular potentials in effective field theory

We briefly review general concepts of renormalization in quantum field theory and discuss their application to solutions of integral equations with singular potentials in the few-nucleon sector of the low-energy effective field theory of QCD. We also describe a particular subtractive renormalization scheme and consider a specific application to a toy-model with a singular potential serving as its effective field theoretical leading-order approximation.

Lambda-nucleon scattering in baryon chiral perturbation theory

We calculate the lambda-nucleon scattering phase shifts and mixing angles by applying time-ordered perturbation theory to the manifestly Lorentz-invariant formulation of SU(3) baryon chiral perturbation theory. Scattering amplitudes are obtained by solving the corresponding coupled-channel integral equations that have a milder ultraviolet behavior compared to their non-relativistic analogs. This allows us to consider the removed cutoff limit in our leading-order calculations also in the $^3P_0$ and $^3P_1$ partial waves. We find that, in the framework we are using, at least some part of the higher-order contributions to the baryon-baryon potential in these channels needs to be treated nonperturbatively and demonstrate how this can be achieved in a way consistent with quantum field theoretical renormalization for the leading contact interactions. We compare our results with the ones of the non-relativistic approach and lattice QCD phase shifts obtained for non-physical pion masses.

Meson-baryon scattering in resummed baryon chiral perturbation theory using time-ordered perturbation theory

Integral equations for meson-baryon scattering amplitudes are obtained by utilizing time-ordered perturbation theory for a manifestly Lorentz-invariant formulation of baryon chiral perturbation theory. Effective potentials are defined as sums of two-particle irreducible contributions of time-ordered diagrams and the scattering amplitudes are obtained as solutions of integral equations. Ultraviolet renormalizability is achieved by solving integral equations for the leading order amplitude and including higher order corrections perturbatively. As an application of the developed formalism, pion-nucleon scattering is considered.

Nucleon polarizabilities in covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory with explicit $Δ$ degrees of freedom

We compute various nucleon polarizabilities in chiral perturbation theory implementing the $Δ$-full ($Δ$-less) approach up to order $ε^3 + q^4$ ($q^4$) in the small-scale (chiral) expansion. The calculation is carried out using the covariant formulation of $χ$PT by utilizing the extended on-mass shell renormalization scheme. Except for the spin-independent dipole polarizabilities used to fix the values of certain low-energy constants, our results for the nucleon polarizabilities are pure predictions. We compare our calculations with available experimental data and other theoretical results. The importance of the explicit treatment of the $Δ$ degree of freedom in the effective field theory description of the nucleon polarizabilities is analyzed. We also study the convergence of the $1/m$ expansion and analyze the efficiency of the heavy-baryon approach for the nucleon polarizabilities.

Parity- and time-reversal-violating nuclear forces

Parity-violating and time-reversal conserving (PVTC) and parity-violating and time-reversal-violating (PVTV) forces in nuclei form only a tiny component of the total interaction between nucleons. The study of these tiny forces can nevertheless be of extreme interest because they allow to obtain information on fundamental symmetries using nuclear systems. The PVTC interaction derives from the weak interaction between the quarks inside nucleons and nuclei and the study of PVTC effects opens a window on the quark-quark weak interaction. The PVTV interaction is sensitive to more exotic interactions at the fundamental level, in particular to strong CP violation in the Standard Model Lagrangian, or even to exotic phenomena predicted in various beyond-the-Standard-Model scenarios. The presence of these interactions can be revealed either by studying various asymmetries in polarized scattering of nuclear systems, or by measuring the presence of non-vanishing permanent electric dipole moments of nucleons, nuclei and diamagnetic atoms and molecules. In this contribution, we review the derivation of the nuclear PVTC and PVTV interactions within various frameworks. We focus in particular on the application of chiral effective field theory, which allows for a more strict connection with the fundamental interactions at the quark level. We investigate PVTC and PVTV effects induced by these potential on several few-nucleon observables, such as the longitudinal asymmetry in proton-proton scattering and radiative neutron-proton capture, and the electric dipole momentsof the deuteron and the trinucleon system.

Uncertainty of three-nucleon continuum observables arising from uncertainties of two-nucleon potential parameters

Propagation of uncertainties from two-nucleon potential parameters to three-nucleon observables, that is statistical errors for the neutron-deuteron elastic scattering and the deuteron breakup reaction at neutron laboratory energies up to 200 MeV is investigated. To that end we use the chiral nucleon-nucleon interaction with the semi-local momentum-space regularization at various orders of the chiral expansion, exploiting knowledge of the covariance matrix of its parameters. For both reactions we compare statistical uncertainties for chiral predictions with the uncertainties obtained in the same way but for the semi-phenomenological One-Pion-Exchange two-nucleon force. In addition for the elastic scattering we show also the truncation errors arising from restriction to a given order of chiral predictions, estimated among others within the Bayesian method, and the cutoff dependence of chiral predictions. We find that the resulting statistical uncertainty is smaller than the truncation errors for the chiral force at lower orders of the chiral expansion. At the higher orders of the chiral expansion and at low energies the statistical errors exceed the truncation ones but at intermediate and higher energies truncation errors are more important. Overall, magnitudes of the theoretical uncertainties are small and amount up to 0.5\%-4\%, depending on the observable and energy. We also find that the magnitudes of statistical uncertainties for the chiral and semi-phenomenological potentials are similar and that the dependence of predictions on the regularization parameter values is important at all investigated energies.

Towards high-order calculations of three-nucleon scattering in chiral effective field theory

We discuss the current status of chiral effective field theory in the three-nucleon sector and present selected results for nucleon-deuteron scattering observables based on semilocal momentum-space-regularized chiral two-nucleon potentials together with consistently regularized three-nucleon forces up to third chiral order. Using a Bayesian model for estimating truncation errors, the obtained results are found to provide a good description of the experimental data. We confirm our earlier findings that a high-precision description of nucleon-deuteron scattering data below pion production threshold will require the theory to be pushed to fifth chiral order. This conclusion is substantiated by an exploratory study of selected short-range contributions to the three-nucleon force at that order, which, as expected, are found to have significant effects on polarization observables at intermediate and high energies. We also outline the challenges that will need to be addressed in order to push the chiral expansion of three-nucleon scattering observables to higher orders.

Elastic pion-nucleon scattering in chiral perturbation theory: A fresh look

Elastic pion-nucleon scattering is analyzed in the framework of chiral perturbation theory up to fourth order within the heavy-baryon expansion and a covariant approach based on an extended on-mass-shell renormalization scheme. We discuss in detail the renormalization of the various low-energy constants and provide explicit expressions for the relevant $β$-functions and the finite subtractions of the power-counting breaking terms within the covariant formulation. To estimate the theoretical uncertainty from the truncation of the chiral expansion, we employ an approach which has been successfully applied in the most recent analysis of the nuclear forces. This allows us to reliably extract the relevant low-energy constants from the available scattering data at low energy. The obtained results provide a clear evidence that the breakdown scale of the chiral expansion for this reaction is related to the $Δ$-resonance. The explicit inclusion of the leading contributions of the $Δ$-isobar is demonstrated to substantially increase the range of applicability of the effective field theory. The resulting predictions for the phase shifts are in an excellent agreement with the ones from the recent Roy-Steiner-equation analysis of pion-nucleon scattering.

Heavy-quark spin symmetry partners of the $X(3872)$ revisited

We revisit the consequences of the heavy-quark spin symmetry for the possible spin partners of the $X(3872)$. We confirm that, if the $X(3872)$ were a $D\bar{D}^*$ molecular state with the quantum numbers $J^{PC}=1^{++}$, then in the strict heavy-quark limit there should exist three more hadronic molecules degenerate with the $X(3872)$, with the quantum numbers $0^{++}$, $1^{+-}$, and $2^{++}$ in line with previous results reported in the literature. We demonstrate that this result is robust with respect to the inclusion of the one-pion exchange interaction between the $D$ mesons. However, this is true only if all relevant partial waves as well as particle channels which are coupled via the pion-exchange potential are taken into account. Otherwise, the heavy-quark symmetry is destroyed even in the heavy-quark limit. Finally, we solve the coupled-channel problem in the $2^{++}$ channel with nonperturbative pions beyond the heavy-quark limit and, contrary to the findings of previous calculations with perturbative pions, find for the spin-2 partner of the $X(3872)$ a significant shift of the mass as well as a width of the order of 50 MeV.

Low-energy theorems for nucleon-nucleon scattering at $M_π=450$ MeV

We apply the low-energy theorems to analyze the recent lattice QCD results for the two-nucleon system at a pion mass of $M_π\simeq 450$ MeV obtained by the NPLQCD collaboration. We find that the binding energies of the deuteron and dineutron are inconsistent with the low-energy behavior of the corresponding phase shifts within the quoted uncertainties and vice versa. Using the binding energies of the deuteron and dineutron as input, we employ the low-energy theorems to predict the phase shifts and extract the scattering length and the effective range in the $^3S_1$ and $^1S_0$ channels. Our results for these quantities are consistent with those obtained by the NPLQCD collaboration from effective field theory analyses but are in conflict with their determination based on the effective-range approximation.

Pion-nucleon scattering in covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory with explicit Delta resonances

We present the results of a third order calculation of the pion-nucleon scattering amplitude in a chiral effective field theory with pions, nucleons and delta resonances as explicit degrees of freedom. We work in a manifestly Lorentz invariant formulation of baryon chiral perturbation theory using dimensional regularization and the extended on-mass-shell renormalization scheme. In the delta resonance sector, the on mass-shell renormalization is realized as a complex-mass scheme. By fitting the low-energy constants of the effective Lagrangian to the $S$- and $P$-partial waves a satisfactory description of the phase shifts from the analysis of the Roy-Steiner equations is obtained. We predict the phase shifts for the $D$ and $F$ waves and compare them with the results of the analysis of the George Washington University group. The threshold parameters are calculated both in the delta-less and delta-full cases. Based on the determined low-energy constants, we discuss the pion-nucleon sigma term. Additionally, in order to determine the strangeness content of the nucleon, we calculate the octet baryon masses in the presence of decuplet resonances up to next-to-next-to-leading order in SU(3) baryon chiral perturbation theory. The octet baryon sigma terms are predicted as a byproduct of this calculation.

Role of the total isospin 3/2 component in three-nucleon reactions

We discuss the role of the three-nucleon isospin T=3/2 amplitude in elastic neutron-deuteron scattering and in the deuteron breakup reaction. The contribution of this amplitude originates from charge-independence breaking of the nucleon-nucleon potential and is driven by the difference between neutron-neutron (proton-proton) and neutron-proton forces. We study the magnitude of that contribution to the elastic scattering and breakup observables, taking the locally regularized chiral N4LO nucleon-nucleon potential supplemented by the chiral N2LO three-nucleon force. For comparison we employ also the Av18 nucleon-nucleon potential combined with the Urbana IX three-nucleon force. We find that the isospin T=3/2 component is important for the breakup reaction and the proper treatment of charge-independence breaking in this case requires the inclusion of the 1S0 state with isospin T=3/2. For neutron-deuteron elastic scattering the T=3/2 contributions are insignificant and charge-independence breaking can be accounted for by using the effective t-matrix generated with the so-called "2/3-1/3" rule.

Testing semi-local chiral two-nucleon interaction in selected electroweak processes

The recently developed semi-local improved chiral nucleon-nucleon interaction is used for the first time to study several electromagnetic and weak processes at energies below the pion production threshold. Cross sections and selected polarization observables for deuteron photodisintegration, nucleon-deuteron radiative capture, three-body $^3$He photodisintegration as well as capture rates for decays of the muonic $^2$H and $^3$He atoms are calculated. The Lippmann-Schwinger and Faddeev equations in momentum space are solved to obtain nuclear states. The electromagnetic current operator is taken as a single nucleon current supplemented by many-body contributions induced via the Siegert theorem. For muon capture processes the nonrelativistic weak current together with the dominant relativistic corrections is used. Our results compare well with experimental data, demonstrating the same quality as is observed for the semi-phenomenological AV18 potential. Compared to the older version of the chiral potential with a nonlocal regularization, a much smaller cut-off dependence is found for the state-of-art chiral local interaction employed in this paper. Finally, estimates of errors due to the truncation of the chiral expansion are given.

Threshold pion production in proton-proton collisions at NNLO in chiral EFT

The reaction $NN \to NN π$ offers a good testing ground for chiral effective field theory at intermediate energies. It challenges our understanding of the first inelastic channel in nucleon-nucleon scattering and of the charge-symmetry breaking pattern in hadronic reactions. In our previous studies, we presented a complete calculation of the pion-production operator for s-wave pions up-to-and-including next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in the formulation of chiral effective field theory, which includes pions, nucleons and $Δ(1232)$ degrees of freedom. In this paper we calculate the near threshold cross section for the $pp \to d π^{+}$ reaction by performing the convolution of the obtained operators with nuclear wave functions based on modern phenomenological and chiral potentials. The available chiral $NN$ wave functions are constructed with a cutoff comparable with the momentum transfer scale inherent in pion production reactions. Hence, a significant portion of the dynamical intermediate-range physics is thereby cut off by them. On the other hand, the NNLO amplitudes evaluated with phenomenological wave functions appear to be largely independent of the $NN$ model used and give corrections to the dominant leading order contributions as expected from dimensional analysis. The result gives support to the counting scheme used to classify the pion production operators, which is a precondition for a reliable investigation of the chirally suppressed neutral pion production. The explicit inclusion of the $Δ(1232)$ is found to be important but smaller than expected due to cancellations.

Two-nucleon scattering in a modified Weinberg approach with a symmetry-preserving regularization

We consider the nucleon-nucleon scattering problem by applying time-ordered perturbation theory to the Lorentz invariant formulation of baryon chiral perturbation theory. Using a symmetry preserving higher derivative form of the effective Lagrangian, we exploit the freedom of the choice of the renormalization condition and obtain an integral equation for the scattering amplitude with an improved ultraviolet behavior. The resulting formulation is used to quantify finite regulator artifacts in two-nucleon phase shifts as well as in the chiral extrapolations of the S-wave scattering lengths and the deuteron binding energy. This approach can be straightforwardly extended to analyze few-nucleon systems and processes involving external electroweak sources.

$^1S_0$ nucleon-nucleon scattering in the modified Weinberg approach

Nucleon-nucleon scattering in the $^1S_0$ partial wave is considered in chiral effective field theory within the renormalizable formulation of Ref. [1] beyond the leading-order approximation. By applying subtractive renormalization, the subleading contact interaction in this channel is taken into account non-perturbatively. For a proper choice of renormalization conditions, the predicted energy dependence of the phase shift and the coefficients in the effective range expansion are found to be in a good agreement with the results of the Nijmegen partial wave analysis.

Baryon chiral perturbation theory extended beyond the low-energy region

We consider an extension of the one-nucleon sector of baryon chiral perturbation theory beyond the low-energy region. The applicability of this approach for higher energies is restricted to small scattering angles, i.e. the kinematical region, where the quark structure of hadrons cannot be resolved. The main idea is to re-arrange the low-energy effective Lagrangian according to a new power counting and to exploit the freedom of the choice of the renormalization condition for loop diagrams. We generalize the extended on-mass-shell scheme for the one-nucleon sector of baryon chiral perturbation theory by choosing a sliding scale, that is we expand the physical amplitudes around kinematical points beyond the threshold. This requires the introduction of complex-valued renormalized coupling constants which can be either extracted from experimental data, or calculated using the renormalization group evolution of coupling constants fixed in threshold region.

Binding energy of the $X(3872)$ at unphysical pion masses

Chiral extrapolation of the $X(3872)$ binding energy is investigated using the modified Weinberg formulation of chiral effective field theory for the $D \bar{D}^*$ scattering. Given its explicit renormalisability, this approach is particularly useful to explore the interplay of the long- and short-range $D \bar{D}^*$ forces in the $X(3872)$ from studying the light-quark (pion) mass dependence of its binding energy. In particular, the parameter-free leading-order calculation shows that the $X$-pole disappears for unphysical large pion masses. On the other hand, without contradicting the naive dimensional analysis, the higher-order pion-mass-dependent contact interaction can change the slope of the binding energy at the physical point yielding the opposite scenario of a stronger bound $X$ at pion masses larger than its physical value. An important role of the pion dynamics and of the 3-body $D\bar{D}π$ effects for chiral extrapolations of the $X$-pole is emphasised. The results of the present study should be of practical value for the lattice simulations since they provide a non-trivial connection between lattice points at unphysical pion masses and the physical world.

We present a novel framework to decompose three-nucleon forces in a momentum space partial-wave basis. The new approach is computationally much more efficient than previous methods and opens the way to ab initio studies of few-nucleon scattering processes, nuclei and nuclear matter based on higher-order chiral 3N forces. We use the new framework to calculate matrix elements of chiral three-nucleon forces at N2LO and N3LO in large basis spaces and carry out benchmark calculations for neutron matter and symmetric nuclear matter. We also study the size of the individual three-nucleon force contributions for $^3$H. For nonlocal regulators, we find that the sub-leading terms, which have been neglected in most calculations so far, provide important contributions. All matrix elements are calculated and stored in a user-friendly way, such that values of low-energy constants as well as the form of regulator functions can be chosen freely.

Few-nucleon systems with state-of-the-art chiral nucleon-nucleon forces

We apply improved nucleon-nucleon potentials up to fifth order in chiral effective field theory, along with a new analysis of the theoretical truncation errors, to study nucleon-deuteron (Nd) scattering and selected low-energy observables in 3H, 4He, and 6Li. Calculations beyond second order differ from experiment well outside the range of quantified uncertainties, providing truly unambiguous evidence for missing three-nucleon forces within the employed framework. The sizes of the required three-nucleon force contributions agree well with expectations based on Weinberg's power counting. We identify the energy range in elastic Nd scattering best suited to study three-nucleon force effects and estimate the achievable accuracy of theoretical predictions for various observables.

Low-energy theorems for nucleon-nucleon scattering at unphysical pion masses

The longest-range part of the nuclear force due to the one-pion exchange governs the energy dependence of the scattering amplitude in the near-threshold region and imposes correlations between the coefficients in the effective range expansion. These correlations may be regarded as low-energy theorems and are known to hold to a high accuracy in the neutron-proton 3S1 partial wave. We generalize the low-energy theorems to the case of unphysical pion masses and provide results for the correlations between the coefficients in the effective range expansion in this partial wave for pion masses up to Mpi ~ 400 MeV. We discuss the implications of our findings for the available and upcoming lattice-QCD simulations of two-nucleon observables.

New fixed points of the renormalisation group for two-body scattering

We outline a separable matrix ansatz for the potentials in effective field theories of nonrelativistic two-body systems with short-range interactions. We use this ansatz to construct new fixed points of the renormalisation-group equation for these potentials. New fixed points indicate a much richer structure than previously recognized in the RG flows of simple short-range potentials.

We investigate the parity-violating analyzing power in neutron capture on the proton at thermal energies in the framework of chiral effective field theory. By combining this analysis with a previous analysis of parity violation in proton-proton scattering, we are able to extract the size of the weak pion-nucleon coupling constant. The uncertainty is significant and dominated by the experimental error which is expected to be reduced soon.

Remarks on the study of the X(3872) from Effective Field Theory with Pion-Exchange Interaction

In a recent paper Phys.Rev.Lett. 111, 042002 (2013) (arXiv:1304.0846), the charmonium state X(3872) is studied in the framework of an effective field theory. In that work it is claimed that (i) the one-pion exchange (OPE) alone provides sufficient binding to produce the X as a shallow bound state at the $D^0\bar{D}^{*0}$ threshold, (ii) short-range dynamics (described by a contact interaction) provides only moderate corrections to the OPE, and (iii) the X-pole disappears as the pion mass is increased slightly and therefore the X should not be seen on the lattice, away from the pion physical mass point, if it were a molecular state. In this paper we demonstrate that the results of Phys.Rev.Lett. 111, 042002 (2013) (arXiv:1304.0846) suffer from technical as well as conceptual problems and therefore do not support the conclusions drawn by the authors.

Improved chiral nucleon-nucleon potential up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order

We present improved nucleon-nucleon potentials derived in chiral effective field theory up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order. We argue that the nonlocal momentum-space regulator employed in the two-nucleon potentials of Refs. [E. Epelbaum, W. Gloeckle, U.-G. Meißner, Nucl. Phys. A747 (2005) 362], [D.R. Entem, R. Machleidt, Phys. Rev. C68 (2003) 041001] is not the most efficient choice, in particular since it affects the long-range part of the interaction. We are able to significantly reduce finite-cutoff artefacts by using an appropriate regularization in coordinate space which maintains the analytic structure of the amplitude. The new potentials do not require the additional spectral function regularization employed in Ref. [E. Epelbaum, W. Gloeckle, U.-G. Meißner, Nucl. Phys. A747 (2005) 362] to cut off the short-range components of the two-pion exchange and make use of the low-energy constants c_i and d_i determined from pion-nucleon scattering without any fine tuning. We discuss in detail the construction of the new potentials and convergence of the chiral expansion for two-nucleon observables. We also introduce a new procedure for estimating the theoretical uncertainty from the truncation of the chiral expansion that replaces previous reliance on cutoff variation.

Local chiral effective field theory interactions and quantum Monte Carlo applications

We present details of the derivation of local chiral effective field theory interactions to next-to-next-to-leading order, and show results for nucleon-nucleon phase shifts and deuteron properties for these potentials. We then perform systematic auxiliary-field diffusion Monte Carlo calculations for neutron matter based on the developed local chiral potentials at different orders. This includes studies of the effects of the spectral-function regularization and of the local regulators. For all orders, we compare the quantum Monte Carlo results with perturbative many-body calculations and find excellent agreement for low cutoffs.

Low-energy neutron-deuteron reactions with N3LO chiral forces

We solve three-nucleon Faddeev equations with nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon forces derived consistently in the framework of chiral perturbation theory at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion. In this first investigation we include only matrix elements of the three-nucleon force for partial waves with the total two-nucleon (three-nucleon) angular momenta up to 3 (5/2). Low-energy neutron-deuteron elastic scattering and deuteron breakup reaction are studied. Emphasis is put on Ay puzzle in elastic scattering and cross sections in symmetric-space-star and neutron-neutron quasi-free-scattering breakup configurations, for which large discrepancies between data and theory have been reported.

Precision nucleon-nucleon potential at fifth order in the chiral expansion

We present a nucleon-nucleon potential at fifth order in chiral effective field theory. We find a substantial improvement in the description of nucleon-nucleon phase shifts as compared to the fourth-order results of Ref. [E. Epelbaum, H. Krebs, U.-G. Meißner, arXiv:1412.0142 [nucl-th]]. This provides clear evidence of the corresponding two-pion exchange contributions with all low-energy constants being determined from pion-nucleon scattering. The fifth-order corrections to nucleon-nucleon observables appear to be of a natural size which confirms the good convergence of the chiral expansion for nuclear forces. Furthermore, the obtained results provide strong support for the novel way of quantifying the theoretical uncertainty due to the truncation of the chiral expansion proposed in Ref. [E. Epelbaum, H. Krebs, U.-G. Meißner, arXiv:1412.0142 [nucl-th]]. Our work opens up new perspectives for precision ab initio calculations in few- and many-nucleon systems and is especially relevant for ongoing efforts towards a quantitative understanding the structure of the three-nucleon force in the framework of chiral effective field theory.

Quantum Monte Carlo Calculations of Light Nuclei Using Chiral Potentials

We present the first Green's function Monte Carlo calculations of light nuclei with nuclear interactions derived from chiral effective field theory up to next-to-next-to-leading order. Up to this order, the interactions can be constructed in a local form and are therefore amenable to quantum Monte Carlo calculations. We demonstrate a systematic improvement with each order for the binding energies of $A=3$ and $A=4$ systems. We also carry out the first few-body tests to study perturbative expansions of chiral potentials at different orders, finding that higher-order corrections are more perturbative for softer interactions. Our results confirm the necessity of a three-body force for correct reproduction of experimental binding energies and radii, and pave the way for studying few- and many-nucleon systems using quantum Monte Carlo methods with chiral interactions.

We confirm the claim of Ref. [D.R. Phillips, C. Schat, Phys. Rev. [D.R. Phillips, C. Schat, Phys. Rev. C88 (2013) 3, 034002] and [H. Krebs, A.M. Gasparyan, E. Epelbaum, Phys.Rev. C87 (2013) 5, 054007]. We also address implications of the large-N_c expansion in QCD for the size of the various three-nucleon force contributions.

Deuteron electromagnetic form factors in a renormalizable formulation of chiral effective field theory

We calculate the deuteron electromagnetic form factors in a modified version of Weinberg's chiral effective field theory approach to the two-nucleon system. We derive renormalizable integral equations for the deuteron without partial wave decomposition. Deuteron form factors are extracted by applying the Lehmann-Symanzik-Zimmermann reduction formalism to the three-point correlation function of deuteron interpolating fields and the electromagnetic current operator. Numerical results of a leading-order calculation with removed cutoff regularization agree well with experimental data.

On the renormalization of the one-pion exchange potential and the consistency of Weinberg's power counting

Nogga, Timmermans and van Kolck recently argued that Weinberg's power counting in the few-nucleon sector is inconsistent and requires modifications. Their argument is based on the observed cutoff dependence of the nucleon-nucleon scattering amplitude calculated by solving the Lippmann-Schwinger equation with the regularized one-pion exchange potential and the cutoff Lambda varied in the range Lambda = 2...20 fm^(-1). In this paper we discuss the role the cutoff plays in the application of chiral effective field theory to the two-nucleon system and study carefully the cutoff-dependence of phase shifts and observables based on the one-pion exchange potential. We show that (i) there is no need to use the momentum-space cutoff larger than Lambda ~ 3 fm^(-1); (ii) the neutron-proton low-energy data show no evidence for an inconsistency of Weinberg's power counting if one uses Lambda ~ 3 fm^{-1}.

Parity violation in proton-proton scattering from chiral effective field theory

We present a calculation of the parity-violating longitudinal asymmetry in proton-proton scattering. The calculation is performed in the framework of chiral effective field theory which is applied systematically to both the parity-conserving and parity-violating interactions. The asymmetry is calculated up to next-to-leading order in the parity-odd nucleon-nucleon potential. At this order the asymmetry depends on two parity-violating low-energy constants: the weak pion-nucleon coupling constant $h_π$ and one four-nucleon contact coupling. By comparison with the existing data, we obtain a rather large range for $h_π= (1.1\pm 2)\cdot 10^{-6}$. This range is consistent with theoretical estimations and experimental limits, but more data are needed to pin down a better constrained value. We conclude that an additional measurement of the asymmetry around 125 MeV lab energy would be beneficial to achieve this goal.

Pion production in nucleon-nucleon collisions in chiral effective field theory with Delta(1232)-degrees of freedom

A calculation of the pion-production operator up to next-to-next-to-leading order for s-wave pions is performed within chiral effective field theory. In the previous study [Phys. Rev. C 85, 054001 (2012)] we discussed the contribution of the pion-nucleon loops at the same order. Here we extend that study to include explicit Delta degrees of freedom and the 1/m_N^2 corrections to the pion-production amplitude. Using the power counting scheme where the Delta-nucleon mass difference is of the order of the characteristic momentum scale in the production process, we calculate all tree-level and loop diagrams involving Delta up to next-to-next-to-leading order. The long-range part of the Delta loop contributions is found to be of similar size to that from the pion-nucleon loops which supports the counting scheme. The net effect of pion-nucleon and Delta loops is expected to play a crucial role in understanding of the neutral pion production data.

Quantum Monte Carlo Calculations with Chiral Effective Field Theory Interactions

We present the first quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations with chiral effective field theory (EFT) interactions. To achieve this, we remove all sources of nonlocality, which hamper the inclusion in QMC calculations, in nuclear forces to next-to-next-to-leading order. We perform auxiliary-field diffusion Monte Carlo (AFDMC) calculations for the neutron matter energy up to saturation density based on local leading-order, next-to-leading order, and next-to-next-to-leading order nucleon-nucleon interactions. Our results exhibit a systematic order-by-order convergence in chiral EFT and provide nonperturbative benchmarks with theoretical uncertainties. For the softer interactions, perturbative calculations are in excellent agreement with the AFDMC results. This work paves the way for QMC calculations with systematic chiral EFT interactions for nuclei and nuclear matter, for testing the perturbativeness of different orders, and allows for matching to lattice QCD results by varying the pion mass.

Quark mass dependence of the X(3872) binding energy

We explore the quark-mass dependence of the pole position of the X(3872) state within the molecular picture. The calculations are performed within the framework of a nonrelativistic Faddeev-type three-body equation for the $D\bar{D}π$ system in the $J^{PC}=1^{++}$ channel. The $πD$ interaction is parametrised via a $D^*$ pole, and a three-body force is included to render the equations well defined. Its strength is adjusted such that the X(3872) appears as a $D\bar{D}^*$ bound state 0.5 MeV below the neutral threshold. We find that the trajectory of the X(3872) depends strongly on the assumed quark-mass dependence of the short-range interactions which can be determined in future lattice QCD calculations. At the same time we are able to provide nontrivial information on the chiral extrapolation in the $X$ channel.

This is in a reasonably good agreement with the available lattice QCD calculations for this quantity.

Varying the light quark mass: impact on the nuclear force and Big Bang nucleosynthesis

The quark mass dependences of light element binding energies and nuclear scattering lengths are derived using chiral perturbation theory in combination with non-perturbative methods. In particular, we present new, improved values for the quark mass dependence of meson resonances that enter the nuclear force. A detailed analysis of the theoretical uncertainties arising in this determination is presented. As an application we derive from a comparison of observed and calculated primordial deuterium and helium abundances a stringent limit on the variation of the light quark mass, $δm_q/m_q = 0.02 \pm 0.04$. Inclusion of the neutron lifetime modification under the assumption of a variation of the Higgs vacuum expectation value that translates into changing quark, electron, and weak gauge boson masses, leads to a stronger limit, $|δm_q/m_q| < 0.009$.

Calculation of Doublet Capture Rate for Muon Capture in Deuterium within Chiral Effective Field Theory

The doublet capture rate of the negative muon capture in deuterium is calculated employing the nuclear wave functions generated from accurate nucleon-nucleon potentials constructed at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order of heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory and the weak meson exchange current operator derived within the same formalism. All but one of the low-energy constants that enter the calculation were fixed from pion-nucleon and nucleon-nucleon scattering data. The low-energy constant d^R (c_D), which cannot be determined from the purely two-nucleon data, was extracted recently from the triton beta-decay and the binding energies of the three-nucleon systems. The calculated values of the doublet capture rates show a rather large spread for the used values of the d^R. Precise measurement of the doublet capture rate in the future will not only help to constrain the value of d^R, but also provide a highly nontrivial test of the nuclear chiral EFT framework. Besides, the precise knowledge of the constant d^R will allow for consistent calculations of other two-nucleon weak processes, such as proton-proton fusion and solar neutrino scattering on deuterons, which are important for astrophysics.

New insights into the spin structure of the nucleon

We analyze the low-energy spin structure of the nucleon in a covariant effective field theory with explicit spin-3/2 degrees of freedom to third order in the small scale expansion. Using the available data on the strong and electromagnetic width of the Delta-resonance, we give parameter-free predictions for various spin-polarizabilities and moments of spin structure functions. We find an improved description of the nucleon spin structure at finite photon virtualities for some observables and point out the necessity of a fourth order calculation.

Pion production in nucleon-nucleon collisions in chiral effective field theory: next-to-next-to-leading order contributions

A complete calculation of the pion-nucleon loops that contribute to the transition operator for $NN\to NNπ$ up-to-and-including next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^2$LO) in chiral effective field theory near threshold is presented. The evaluation is based on the so-called momentum counting scheme, which takes into account the relatively large momentum of the initial nucleons inherent in pion-production reactions. We show that the significant cancellations between the loops found at next-to-leading order (NLO) in the earlier studies are also operative at N$^2$LO. In particular, the $1/m_N$ corrections (with $m_N$ being the nucleon mass) to loop diagrams cancel at N$^2$LO, as do the contributions of the pion loops involving the low-energy constants $c_i$, i=1...4. In contrast to the NLO calculation however, the cancellation of loops at N$^2$LO is incomplete, yielding a non-vanishing contribution to the transition amplitude. Together with the one-pion exchange tree-level operators, the loop contributions provide the long-range part of the production operator. Finally, we discuss the phenomenological implications of these findings. In particular, we find that the amplitudes generated by the N$^2$LO pion loops yield contributions comparable in size with the most important phenomenological heavy-meson exchange amplitudes.

The multiple-scattering series in pion-deuteron scattering and the nucleon-nucleon potential: perspectives from effective field theory

Important contributions to meson-nucleus scattering are produced by terms in the multiple-scattering series, which is defined as the sum of all diagrams where the meson scatters back and forth between a pair of static nucleons before leaving the nucleus. In particular, the sum of this series is needed for an accurate description of kaon-deuteron scattering, and appears as part of the nucleon-nucleon potential. In this article we present some effective-field-theory (EFT)-based insights into this series in the case of two-nucleon systems. In particular, we discuss the fact that, if meson-nucleon scattering is approximated by the scattering-length term, individual terms of the series are divergent, and enhanced with respect to the straightforward expectation from chiral perturbation theory ($χ$PT). This apparently indicates the presence of similarly enhanced counterterms. However, we show that when the series is resummed the divergences cancel, such that no additional information on short-range interactions is needed to obtain predictions for observables after resummation. We discuss the conditions under which this resummation is justified. We show that the same issues arise in the $NN$ potential, where the resummed series produces poles whose appearance indicates the breakdown scale of the $χ$PT expansion for that quantity. This demonstrates unequivocally that $χ$PT cannot be applied to compute $V(r)$ for distances smaller than $r \sim 1$ fm at least in the theory without explicit Delta(1232) degrees of freedom. We briefly discuss whether this bound can be lowered if the Delta resonance is included in the EFT as an explicit degree of freedom.

Weinberg's approach to nucleon-nucleon scattering revisited

We propose a new, renormalizable approach to nucleon-nucleon scattering in chiral effective field theory based on the manifestly Lorentz invariant form of the effective Lagrangian without employing the heavy-baryon expansion. For the pion-less case and for the formulation based on perturbative pions, the new approach reproduces the known results obtained by Kaplan, Savage and Wise. Contrary to the standard formulation utilizing the heavy-baryon expansion, the nonperturbatively resummed one-pion exchange potential can be renormalized by absorbing all ultraviolet divergences into the leading S-wave contact interactions. We explain in detail the differences to the heavy-baryon formulation and present numerical results for two-nucleon phase shifts at leading order in the low-momentum expansion.

Signatures of the chiral two-pion exchange electromagnetic currents in the 2H and 3He photodisintegration reactions

The recently derived long-range two-pion exchange (TPE) contributions to the nuclear current operator which appear at next-to-leading order (NLO) of the chiral expansion are used to describe electromagnetic processes. We study their role in the photodisintegration of 2H and 3He and compare our predictions with experimental data. The bound and scattering states are calculated using five different parametrizations of the chiral next-to-next-to-leading order (N2LO) nucleon-nucleon (NN) potential which allows us to estimate the theoretical uncertainty at a given order in the chiral expansion. For some observables the results are very close to the predictions based on the AV18 NN potential and the current operator (partly) consistent with this force. In the most cases, the addition of long-range TPE currents improved the description of the experimental data.

Signatures of three-nucleon interactions in few-nucleon systems

Recent experimental results in three-body systems have unambiguously shown that calculations based only on nucleon-nucleon forces fail to accurately describe many experimental observables and one needs to include effects which are beyond the realm of the two-body potentials. This conclusion owes its significance to the fact that experiments and calculations can both be performed with a high accuracy. In this review, both theoretical and experimental achievements of the past decade will be underlined. Selected results will be presented. The discussion on the effects of the three-nucleon forces is, however, limited to the hadronic sector. It will be shown that despite the major successes in describing these seemingly simple systems, there are still clear discrepancies between data and the state-of-the-art calculations.

The triton with long-range chiral N3LO three nucleon forces

Long-range contributions to the three-nucleon force that have been recently worked out in chiral effective field theory at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order are for the first time included in the triton and the doublet nucleon-deuteron scattering length calculations. The strengths of the two short-range terms available at this order in the chiral expansion are determined from the triton binding energy and the neutron-deuteron doublet scattering length. The structure of the resulting three-nucleon force is explored and effects for the two-nucleon correlation function in the triton are investigated. Expectation values of the individual contributions to the three-nucleon force in the triton are found to be in the range from a few 100 keV to about 1 MeV. Our study demonstrates that the very complicated operator structure of the novel chiral three-nucleon forces can be successively implemented in three-nucleon Faddeev calculations.

Two-Pion Exchange Currents in Photodisintegration of the Deuteron

Chiral effective field theory (ChEFT) is a modern framework to analyze the properties of few-nucleon systems at low energies. It is based on the most general effective Lagrangian for pions and nucleons consistent with the chiral symmetry of QCD. For energies below the pion-production threshold it is possible to eliminate the pionic degrees of freedom and derive nuclear potentials and nuclear current operators solely in terms of the nucleonic degrees of freedom. This is very important because, despite a lot of experience gained in the past, the consistency between two-nucleon forces, many-nucleon forces and the corresponding current operators has not been achieved yet. In this presentation we consider the recently derived long-range two-pion exchange (TPE) contributions to the nuclear current operator which appear at next-to leading order of the chiral expansion. These operators do not contain any free parameters. We study their role in the deuteron photodisintegration reaction and compare our predictions with experimental data. The bound and scattering states are calculated using five different chiral N2LO nucleon-nucleon (NN) potentials which allows to estimate the theoretical uncertainty at a given order in the chiral expansion. For some observables the results are very close to the reference predictions based on the AV18 NN potential and the current operator (partly) consistent with this force.

A new way to perform partial wave decompositions of few-nucleon forces

We formulate a general and exact method of partial wave decomposition (PWD) of any nucleon-nucleon (NN) potential and any three-nucleon (3N) force. The approach allows one to efficiently use symbolic algebra software to generate the interaction dependent part of the program code calculating the interaction. We demonstrate the feasibility of this approach for the one-boson exchange BonnB potential, a recent nucleon-nucleon chiral force and the chiral two-pion-exchange three-nucleon force. In all cases very good agreement between the new and the traditional PWD is found. The automated PWD offered by the new approach is of the utmost importance in view of future applications of numerous chiral N3LO contributions to the 3N force in three nucleon calculations.

Gauge invariance in the presence of a cutoff

We use the method of gauging equations to construct the electromagnetic current operator for the two-nucleon system in a theory with a finite cutoff. The employed formulation ensures that the two-nucleon T-matrix and corresponding five-point function, in the cutoff theory, are identical to the ones formally defined by a reference theory without a cutoff. A feature of our approach is that it effectively introduces a cutoff into the reference theory in a way that maintains the long-range part of the exchange current operator; for applications to effective field theory (EFT), this property is usually sufficient to guarantee the predictive power of the resulting cutoff theory. In addition, our approach leads to Ward-Takahashi (WT) identities that are linear in the interactions. From the point of view of EFT's where such a WT identity is satisfied in the reference theory, this ensures that gauge invariance in the cutoff theory is maintained order by order in the expansion.

Regularization, renormalization and "peratization" in effective field theory for two nucleons

We discuss conceptual aspects of renormalization in the context of effective field theories for the two-nucleon system. It is shown that, contrary to widespread belief, renormalization scheme dependence of the scattering amplitude can only be eliminated up to the order the calculations are performed. We further consider an effective theory for an exactly solvable quantum mechanical model which possesses a long- and short-range interaction to simulate pionful effective field theory. We discuss the meaning of low-energy theorems in this model and demonstrate their validity in calculations with a finite cutoff $Λ$ as long as it is chosen of the order of the hard scale in the problem. Removing the cutoff by taking the limit $Λ\to \infty$ yields a finite result for the scattering amplitude but violates the low-energy theorems and is, therefore, not compatible with the effective field theory framework.

The proton to proton polarization transfer coefficients K_x^{x'}, K_y^{y'}, K_z^{x'} and the proton to deuteron polarization transfer coefficients K_x^{x'}, K_y^{y'}, K_z^{x'}, K_x^{y'z'}, K_y^{z'z'}, K_z^{y'z'}, K_y^{x'z'} and K_y^{x'x'-y'y'} have been measured in d(\vec p, \vec p)d and d(\vec p, \vec d)p reactions at E^{lab}_p = 22.7 MeV, respectively. The data have been compared to predictions of modern nuclear forces obtained by solving the three-nucleon Faddeev equations in momentum space. Realistic (semi) phenomenological nucleon-nucleon potentials combined with model three-nucleon forces and modern chiral nuclear forces have been used. The AV18, CD Bonn, Nijm I and II nucleon-nucleon interactions have been applied alone or combined with the Tucson-Melbourne 99 three-nucleon force, adjusted separately for each potential to reproduce the triton binding energy. For the AV18 potential also the Urbana IX three-nucleon force have been used. In addition chiral NN potentials in the next-to-leading-order and chiral two- and three-nucleon forces in the next-to-next-to-leading-order have been applied. Only when three-nucleon forces are included a satisfactory description of all data results. For the chiral approach the restriction to the forces in the next-to-leading order is insufficient. Only when going over to the next-to-next-to-leading order one gets a satisfactory description of the data, similar to the one obtained with the (semi) phenomenological forces.

Isospin-violating nucleon-nucleon forces using the method of unitary transformation

Recently, we have derived the leading and subleading isospin-breaking three-nucleon forces using the method of unitary transformation. In the present work we extend this analysis and consider the corresponding two-nucleon forces using the same approach. Certain contributions to the isospin-violating one- and two-pion-exchange potential have already been discussed by various groups within the effective field theory framework. Our findings agree with the previously obtained results. In addition, we present the expressions for the subleading charge-symmetry-breaking two-pion exchange potential which were not considered before. These corrections turn out to be numerically important. Together with the three-nucleon force results presented in our previous work, the results of the present study specify completely isospin-violating nuclear forces up to the order $q^5/Λ^5$, where $q$ ($Λ$) denotes the soft (hard) scale.

Systematic study of three-nucleon force effects in the cross section of the deuteron-proton breakup at 130 MeV

High precision cross-section data of the deuteron-proton breakup reaction at 130 MeV are presented for 72 kinematically complete configurations. The data cover a large region of the available phase space, divided into a systematic grid of kinematical variables. They are compared with theoretical predictions, in which the full dynamics of the three-nucleon (3N) system is obtained in three different ways: realistic nucleon-nucleon (NN) potentials are combined with model 3N forces (3NF's) or with an effective 3NF resulting from explicit treatment of the Delta-isobar excitation. Alternatively, the chiral perturbation theory approach is used at the next-to-next-to-leading order with all relevant NN and 3N contributions taken into account. The generated dynamics is then applied to calculate cross-section values by rigorous solution of the 3N Faddeev equations. The comparison of the calculated cross sections with the experimental data shows a clear prefernce for the predictions in which the 3NF's are included. The majority of the experimental data points is well reproduced by the theoretical predictions. The remaining discrepancies are investigated by inspecting cross sections integrated over certain kinematical variables. The procedure of global comparisons leads to establishing regularities in disagreements between the experimental data and the theoretically predicted values of the cross sections. They indicate deficiencies still present in the assumed models of the 3N system dynamics.

Low-momentum nucleon-nucleon interaction and its application to the few-nucleon systems

Low-momentum nucleon-nucleon interactions are derived within the framework of a unitary-transformation theory, starting with realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions. A cutoff momentum Lambda is introduced to specify a border between the low- and high-momentum spaces. By the Faddeev-Yakubovsky calculations the low-momentum interactions are investigated with respect to the dependence of ground-state energies of ^3H and ^4He on the parameter Lambda. It is found that we need the momentum cutoff parameter Lambda >= 5 fm^-1 in order to reproduce satisfactorily the exact values of the binding energies for ^3H and ^4He. The calculation with Lambda =2 fm^-1 recommended by Bogner et al. leads to considerable overbinding at least for the few-nucleon systems.

The two-nucleon system at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order

We consider the two-nucleon system at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N^3LO) in chiral effective field theory. The two-nucleon potential at N^3LO consists of one-, two- and three-pion exchanges and a set of contact interactions with zero, two and four derivatives. In addition, one has to take into account various isospin-breaking and relativistic corrections. We employ spectral function regularization for the multi-pion exchanges. Within this framework, it is shown that the three-pion exchange contribution is negligibly small. The low-energy constants (LECs) related to pion-nucleon vertices are taken consistently from studies of pion-nucleon scattering in chiral perturbation theory. The total of 26 four-nucleon LECs has been determined by a combined fit to some np and pp phase shifts from the Nijmegen analysis together with the nn scattering length. The description of nucleon-nucleon scattering and the deuteron observables at N^3LO is improved compared to the one at NLO and NNLO. The theoretical uncertainties in observables are estimated based on the variation of the cut-offs in the spectral function representation of the potential and in the regulator utilized in the Lippmann-Schwinger equation.

Nuclear forces from chiral Lagrangians using the method of unitary transformation II: The two-nucleon system

We employ the chiral nucleon-nucleon potential derived in ref.[1] to study bound and scattering states in the two-nucleon system. At next-to-leading order, this potential is the sum of renormalized one-pion and two-pion exchange and contact interactions. At next-to-next-to-leading order, we have additional chiral two-pion exchange with low-energy constants determined from pion-nucleon scattering. Alternatively, we consider the Δ(1232) as an explicit degree of freedom in the effective field theory. The nine parameters related to the contact interactions can be determined by a fit to the np S- and P-waves and the mixing parameter ε_1 for laboratory energies below 100 MeV. The predicted phase shifts and mixing parameters for higher energies and higher angular momenta are mostly well described for energies below 300 MeV. The S-waves are described as precisely as in modern phenomenological potentials. We find a good description of the deuteron properties.
