Symplectic Induction, Prequantum Induction, and Prequantum Multiplicities

Frobenius reciprocity asserts that induction from a subgroup and restriction to it are adjoint functors in categories of unitary G-modules. In the 1980s, Guillemin and Sternberg established a parallel property of Hamiltonian G-spaces, which (as we show) unfortunately fails to mirror the situation where more than one G-module "quantizes" a given Hamiltonian G-space. This paper offers evidence that the situation is remedied by working in the category of *prequantum* G-spaces, where this ambiguity disappears; there, we define induction and multiplicity spaces, and establish Frobenius reciprocity as well as the "induction in stages" property.

Group-valued momentum maps for actions of automorphism groups

The space of smooth sections of a symplectic fiber bundle carries a natural symplectic structure. We provide a general framework to determine the momentum map for the action of the group of bundle automorphism on this space. Since, in general, this action does not admit a classical momentum map, we introduce the more general class of group-valued momentum maps which is inspired by the Poisson Lie setting. In this approach, the group-valued momentum map assigns to every section of the symplectic fiber bundle a principal circle-bundle with connection. The power of this general framework is illustrated in many examples: we construct generalized Clebsch variables for fluids with integral helicity; the anti-canonical bundle turns out to be the momentum map for the action of the group of symplectomorphisms on the space of compatible complex structures; the Teichmüller moduli space is realized as a symplectic orbit reduced space associated to a coadjoint orbit of $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ and spaces related to the other coadjoint orbits are identified and studied. Moreover, we show that the momentum map for the group of bundle automorphisms on the space of connections over a Riemann surface encodes, besides the curvature, also topological information of the bundle.

A new Lagrangian dynamic reduction in field theory

For symmetric classical field theories on principal bundles there are two methods of symmetry reduction: covariant and dynamic. Assume that the classical field theory is given by a symmetric covariant Lagrangian density defined on the first jet bundle of a principal bundle. It is shown that covariant and dynamic reduction lead to equivalent equations of motion. This is achieved by constructing a new Lagrangian defined on an infinite dimensional space which turns out to be gauge group invariant.

Higher order Lagrange-Poincaré and Hamilton-Poincaré reductions

Motivated by the problem of longitudinal data assimilation, e.g., in the registration of a sequence of images, we develop the higher-order framework for Lagrangian and Hamiltonian reduction by symmetry in geometric mechanics. In particular, we obtain the reduced variational principles and the associated Poisson brackets. The special case of higher order Euler-Poincaré and Lie-Poisson reduction is also studied in detail.

Noether's Theorem for Dissipative Quantum Dynamical Semigroups

Noether's Theorem on constants of the motion of dynamical systems has recently been extended to classical dissipative systems (Markovian semi-groups) by Baez and Fong. We show how to extend these results to the fully quantum setting of quantum Markov dynamics. For finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces, we construct a mapping from observables to CP maps that leads to the natural analogue of their criterion of commutativity with the infinitesimal generator of the Markov dynamics. Using standard results on the relaxation of states to equilibrium under quantum dynamical semi-groups, we are able to characterise the constants of the motion under quantum Markov evolutions in the infinite-dimensional setting under the usual assumption of existence of a stationary strictly positive density matrix. In particular, the Noether constants are identified with the fixed point of the Heisenberg picture semigroup.

Equivalent theories of liquid crystal dynamics

There are two competing descriptions of nematic liquid crystal dynamics: the Ericksen-Leslie director theory and the Eringen micropolar approach. Up to this day, these two descriptions have remained distinct in spite of several attempts to show that the micropolar theory comprises the director theory. In this paper we show that this is the case by using symmetry reduction techniques and introducing a new system that is equivalent to the Ericksen-Leslie equations and includes disclination dynamics. The resulting equations of motion are verified to be completely equivalent, although one of the two different reductions offers the possibility of accounting for orientational defects. After applying these two approaches to the ordered micropolar theory of Lhuiller and Rey, all the results are eventually extended to flowing complex fluids, such as nematic liquid crystals.

Extensions of Lie-Rinehart algebras and cotangent bundle reduction

Let Q denote a smooth manifold acted upon smoothly by a Lie group G. The G-action lifts to an action on the total space T of the cotangent bundle of Q and hence on the standard symplectic Poisson algebra of smooth functions on T. The Poisson algebra of G-invariant functions on T yields a Poisson structure on the space T/G of G-orbits. We relate this Poisson algebra with extensions of Lie-Rinehart algebras and derive an explicit formula for this Poisson structure in terms of differentials. We then show, for the particular case where the G-action on Q is principal, how an explicit description of the Poisson algebra derived in the literature by an ad hoc construction is essentially a special case of the formula for the corresponding extension of Lie-Rinehart algebras. By means of various examples, we also show that this kind of description breaks down when the G-action does not define a principal bundle.

Integrable G-Strands on semisimple Lie groups

The present paper derives systems of partial differential equations that admit a quadratic zero curvature representation for an arbitrary real semisimple Lie algebra. It also determines the general form of Hamilton's principles and Hamiltonians for these systems and analyzes the linear stability of their equilibrium solutions in the examples of $\mathfrak{so}(3)$ and $\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{R})$.

Moduli spaces of toric manifolds

We construct a distance on the moduli space of symplectic toric manifolds of dimension four. Then we study some basic topological properties of this space, in particular, path-connectedness, compactness, and completeness. The construction of the distance is related to the Duistermaat-Heckman measure and the Hausdorff metric. While the moduli space, its topology and metric, may be constructed in any dimension, the tools we use in the proofs are four-dimensional, and hence so is our main result.

Multisymplectic variational integrators and space/time symplecticity

Multisymplectic variational integrators are structure preserving numerical schemes especially designed for PDEs derived from covariant spacetime Hamilton principles. The goal of this paper is to study the properties of the temporal and spatial discrete evolution maps obtained from a multisymplectic numerical scheme. Our study focuses on a 1+1 dimensional spacetime discretized by triangles, but our approach carries over naturally to more general cases. In the case of Lie group symmetries, we explore the links between the discrete Noether theorems associated to the multisymplectic spacetime discretization and to the temporal and spatial discrete evolution maps, and emphasize the role of boundary conditions. We also consider in detail the case of multisymplectic integrators on Lie groups. Our results are illustrated with the numerical example of a geometrically exact beam model.

On the coupling between an ideal fluid and immersed particles

In this paper we use Lagrange-Poincare reduction to understand the coupling between a fluid and a set of Lagrangian particles that are supposed to simulate it. In particular, we reinterpret the work of Cendra et al. by substituting velocity interpolation from particle velocities for their principal connection. The consequence of writing evolution equations in terms of interpolation is two-fold. First, it gives estimates on the error incurred when interpolation is used to derive the evolution of the system. Second, this form of the equations of motion can inspire a family of particle and hybrid particle-spectral methods where the error analysis is "built-in". We also discuss the influence of other parameters attached to the particles, such as shape, orientation, or higher-order deformations, and how they can help with conservation of momenta in the sense of Kelvin's circulation theorem.

Poisson Reduction of Controlled Hamiltonian System by Controllability Distribution

In this paper, we first study the Poisson reductions of controlled Hamiltonian (CH) system and symmetric CH system by controllability distributions. These reductions are the extension of Poisson reductions by distribution for Poisson manifolds to that for phase spaces of CH systems with external force and control. We give Poisson reducible conditions of CH system by controllability distribution, and prove that the Poisson reducible property for CH systems leaves invariant under the CH-equivalence. Moreover, we study the Poisson reduction of symmetric CH system by G-invariant controllability distribution. Next, we consider the singular Poisson reduction and SPR-CH-equivalence for CH system with symmetry, and prove the singular Poisson reduction theorem of CH system. We also study the relationship between Poisson reduction for singular Poisson reducible CH systems by G-invariant controllability distribution and that for associated reduced CH system by reduced controllability distribution. At last, some examples are given to state the theoretical results.

The affine invariant of generalized semitoric systems

A generalized semitoric system F:=(J,H): M --> R^2 on a symplectic 4-manifold is an integrable system whose essential properties are that F is a proper map, its set of regular values is connected, J generates an S^1-action and is not necessarily proper. These systems can exhibit focus-focus singularities, which correspond to fibers of F which are topologically multipinched tori. The image F(M) is a singular affine manifold which contains a distinguished set of isolated points in its interior: the focus-focus values {(x_i,y_i)} of F. By performing a vertical cutting procedure along the lines {x:=x_i}, we construct a homeomorphism f : F(M) --> f(F(M)), which restricts to an affine diffeomorphism away from these vertical lines, and generalizes a construction of Vu Ngoc. The set Δ:=f(F(M)) in R^2 is a symplectic invariant of (M,ω,F), which encodes the affine structure of F. Moreover, Δmay be described as a countable union of planar regions of four distinct types, where each type is defined as the region bounded between the graphs of two functions with various properties (piecewise linear, continuous, convex, etc). If F is a toric system, Δis a convex polygon (as proven by Atiyah and Guillemin-Sternberg) and f is the identity.

Euler-Poincaré approaches to nematodynamics

Nematodynamics is the orientation dynamics of flowless liquid-crystals. We show how Euler-Poincaré reduction produces a unifying framework for various theories, including Ericksen-Leslie, Luhiller-Rey, and Eringen's micropolar theory. In particular, we show that these theories are all compatible with each other and some of them allow for more general configurations involving a non vanishing discination density. All results are also extended to flowing liquid crystals.

Gradient flows in the normal and Kähler metrics and triple bracket generated metriplectic systems

The dynamics of gradient and Hamiltonian flows with particular application to flows on adjoint orbits of a Lie group and the extension of this setting to flows on a loop group are discussed. Different types of gradient flows that arise from different metrics including the so-called normal metric on adjoint orbits of a Lie group and the Kähler metric are compared. It is discussed how a Kähler metric can arise from a complex structure induced by the Hilbert transform. Hybrid and metriplectic flows that arise when one has both Hamiltonian and gradient components are examined. A class of metriplectic systems that is generated by completely antisymmetric triple brackets is described and for finite-dimensional systems given a Lie algebraic interpretation. A variety of explicit examples of the several types of flows are given.

Stability of equilibria for the $\mathfrak{so}(4)$ free rigid body

The stability for all generic equilibria of the Lie-Poisson dynamics of the $\mathfrak{so}(4)$ rigid body dynamics is completely determined. It is shown that for the generalized rigid body certain Cartan subalgebras (called of coordinate type) of $\mathfrak{so}(n)$ are equilibrium points for the rigid body dynamics. In the case of $\mathfrak{so}(4)$ there are three coordinate type Cartan subalgebras whose intersection with a regular adjoint orbit give three Weyl group orbits of equilibria. These coordinate type Cartan subalgebras are the analogues of the three axes of equilibria for the classical rigid body in $\mathfrak{so}(3)$. In addition to these coordinate type Cartan equilibria there are others that come in curves.

Invariant higher-order variational problems II

Motivated by applications in computational anatomy, we consider a second-order problem in the calculus of variations on object manifolds that are acted upon by Lie groups of smooth invertible transformations. This problem leads to solution curves known as Riemannian cubics on object manifolds that are endowed with normal metrics. The prime examples of such object manifolds are the symmetric spaces. We characterize the class of cubics on object manifolds that can be lifted horizontally to cubics on the group of transformations. Conversely, we show that certain types of non-horizontal geodesics on the group of transformations project to cubics. Finally, we apply second-order Lagrange--Poincaré reduction to the problem of Riemannian cubics on the group of transformations. This leads to a reduced form of the equations that reveals the obstruction for the projection of a cubic on a transformation group to again be a cubic on its object manifold.

Symplectic bifurcation theory for integrable systems

This paper develops a symplectic bifurcation theory for integrable systems in dimension four. We prove that if an integrable system has no hyperbolic singularities and its bifurcation diagram has no vertical tangencies, then the fibers of the induced singular Lagrangian fibration are connected. The image of this singular Lagrangian fibration is, up to smooth deformations, a planar region bounded by the graphs of two continuous functions. The bifurcation diagram consists of the boundary points in this image plus a countable collection of rank zero singularities, which are contained in the interior of the image. Because it recently has become clear to the mathematics and mathematical physics communities that the bifurcation diagram of an integrable system provides the best framework to study symplectic invariants, this paper provides a setting for studying quantization questions, and spectral theory of quantum integrable systems.

Applying Hodge theory to detect Hamiltonian flows

We prove that when Hodge theory survives on non-compact symplectic manifolds, a compact symplectic Lie group action having fixed points is necessarily Hamiltonian, provided the associated almost complex structure preserves the space of harmonic one-forms. For example, this is the case for complete Kähler manifolds for which the symplectic form has an appropriate decay at infinity. This extends a classical theorem of Frankel for compact Kähler manifolds to complete non-compact Kähler manifolds.

Exact geometric theory of dendronized polymer dynamics

Dendronized polymers consist of an elastic backbone with a set of iterated branch structures (dendrimers)attached at every base point of the backbone. The conformations of such molecules depend on the elastic deformation of the backbone and the branches, as well as on nonlocal (e.g., electrostatic, or Lennard-Jones) interactions between the elementary molecular units comprising the dendrimers and/or backbone. We develop a geometrically exact theory for the dynamics of such polymers, taking into account both local (elastic) and nonlocal interactions. The theory is based on applying symmetry reduction of Hamilton's principle for a Lagrangian defined on the tangent bundle of iterated semidirect products of the rotation groups that represent the relative orientations of the dendritic branches of the polymer. The resulting symmetry-reduced equations of motion are written in conservative form.

Lagrange-Poincare field equations

The Lagrange-Poincare equations of classical mechanics are cast into a field theoretic context together with their associated constrained variational principle. An integrability/reconstruction condition is established that relates solutions of the original problem with those of the reduced problem. The Kelvin-Noether theorem is formulated in this context. Applications to the isoperimetric problem, the Skyrme model for meson interaction, metamorphosis image dynamics, and molecular strands illustrate various aspects of the theory.

Geometric representation theory for unitary groups of operator algebras

Geometric realizations for the restrictions of GNS representations to unitary groups of $C^*$-algebras are constructed. These geometric realizations use an appropriate concept of reproducing kernels on vector bundles. To build such realizations in spaces of holomorphic sections, a class of complex coadjoint orbits of the corresponding real Banach-Lie groups are described and some homogeneous holomorphic Hermitian vector bundles that are naturally associated with the coadjoint orbits are constructed.

Asymptotic and Lyapunov stability of Poisson equilibria

This paper includes results centered around three topics, all of them related with the nonlinear stability of equilibria in Poisson dynamical systems. Firstly, we prove an energy-Casimir type sufficient condition for stability that uses functions that are not necessarily conserved by the flow and that takes into account certain asymptotically stable behavior that may occur in the Poisson category. This method is adapted to Poisson systems obtained via a reduction procedure and we show in examples that the kind of stability that we propose is appropriate when dealing with the stability of the equilibria of some constrained systems. Finally, we discuss two situations in which the use of continuous Casimir functions in stability studies is equivalent to the topological stability methods introduced by Patrick {\it et al.}
