Novel quantum phase of the chromium spinel oxide HgCr$_{\rm 2}$O$_{\rm 4}$ in high magnetic fields

In this study, we have performed the magnetocaloric effect and the specific heat measurements of chromium spinel oxide HgCr$_2$O$_4$, wherein the magnetic Cr$^{3+}$ ions form a highly frustrated pyrochlore lattice with significant spin-lattice coupling. In addition to the known magnetic-field-induced phases, our thermodynamic measurements detect a novel quantum phase just before the saturation of the magnetization, which has not been expected from the classical theories of the pyrochlore lattice antiferromagnet with spin-lattice coupling. Based on recent theoretical model calculation, we discuss the possibility of a spin nematic state appearing for this quantum phase.

Effects of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in volborthite: Magnetic orders and thermal Hall effect

Volborthite offers an interesting example of a highly frustrated quantum magnet in which ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions compete on anisotropic kagome lattices. A recent density functional theory calculation has provided a magnetic model based on coupled trimers, which is consistent with a broad 1/3-magnetization plateau observed experimentally. Here we study the effects of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions in volborthite. We derive an effective model in which pseudospin-1/2 moments emerging on trimers form a network of an anisotropic triangular lattice. Using the effective model, we show that for a magnetic field perpendicular to the kagome layer, magnon excitations from the 1/3-plateau feel a Berry curvature due to the DM interactions, giving rise to a thermal Hall effect. Our magnon Bose gas theory can explain qualitative features of the magnetization and the thermal Hall conductivity measured experimentally. A further quantitative comparison with experiment poses constraints on the coupling constants in the effective model, promoting a quasi-one-dimensional picture. Based on this picture, we analyze low-temperature magnetic phase diagrams using effective field theory, and point out their crucial dependence on the field direction.

Novel phases in a square-lattice frustrated ferromagnet : 1/3-magnetisation plateau, helicoidal spin-liquid and vortex crystal

A large part of the interest in magnets with frustrated antiferromagnetic interactions comes from the many new phases found in applied magnetic field. In this Article, we explore some of the new phases which arise in a model with frustrated ferromagnetic interactions, the $J_1-J_2-J_3$ Heisenberg model on a square lattice. Using a combination of classical Monte-Carlo simulation and spin-wave theory, we uncover behaviour reminiscent of some widely-studied frustrated antiferromagnets, but with a number of new twists. We first demonstrate that, for a suitable choice of parameters, the phase diagram as a function of magnetic field and temperature is nearly identical to that of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a triangular lattice, including the celebrated 1/3-magnetisation plateau. We then examine how this phase diagram changes when the model is tuned to a point where the classical ground--state is highly degenerate. In this case, two new phases emerge; a classical, finite-temperature spin-liquid, characterised by a "ring" in the spin structure--factor $\mathcal{S}({\mathbf q})$; and a vortex crystal, a multiple-Q state with finite magnetisation, which can be viewed as an ordered lattice of magnetic vortices. All of these new phases persist for a wide range of magnetic field. We discuss the relationship between these results and published studies of frustrated antiferromagnets, together with some of the materials where these new phases might be observed in experiment.

Nematic ordering in pyrochlore antiferromagnets: high-field phase of chromium spinel oxides

Motivated by recent observation of a new high field phase near saturation in chromium spinels $A$Cr$_2$O$_4$ ($A=$ Zn, Cd, Hg), we study the $S = 3/2$ pyrochlore Heisenberg antiferromagnet with biquadratic interactions. Magnon instability analysis at the saturation field reveals that a very small biquadratic interaction can induce magnon pairing in pyrochlore antiferromagnets, which leads to the emergence of a ferro-quadrupolar phase, or equivalently a spin nematic phase, below the saturation field. We present the magnetic phase diagram in an applied field, studying both $S=3/2$ and $S=1$ spin systems. The relevance of our result to chromium spinels is discussed.

Magnon condensation with finite degeneracy on the triangular lattice

We study the spin 1/2 triangular-lattice $J_1$-$J_2$-$J_3$ antiferromagnet close to the saturation field using the dilute Bose gas theory, where the magnetic structure is determined by the condensation of magnons. We focus on the case of ferromagnetic $J_1$ and antiferromagnetic $J_2,J_3$, that is particularly rich because frustration effects allow the single-magnon energy dispersion to have six-fold degenerate minima at incommensurate momenta. Our calculation also includes an interlayer coupling $J_0$, which covers both antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic cases including negligibly small regime (two-dimensional case). Besides the spiral and fan phases, we find a new double-$q$ phase (superposition of two modes), dubbed "${\bf Q}_0$-${\bf Q}_1$" (or simply "01") phase, that enjoys a new type of multiferroic character. Certain phase boundaries have a singular $J_0$ dependence for $J_0\to 0$, implying that even a very small interlayer coupling drastically changes the ground state. A mechanism for this singularity is presented. Moreover, in some regions of the parameter space, we show that a dilute gas of magnons can not be stable, and phase separation (corresponding to a magnetization jump) is expected. In the $J_1$-$J_2$ model ($J_3=0$), formation of two-magnon bound states is observed, which can lead to a quadrupolar (spin-nematic) ordered phase. Exact diagonalization analysis is also applied to the search of bound states.

Z_3 symmetry-protected topological phases in the SU(3) AKLT model

We study $\mathbb{Z}_3$ symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases in one-dimensional spin systems with $Z_3 \times Z_3$ symmetry. We construct ground-state wave functions of the matrix product form for nontrivial $\mathbb{Z}_3$ phases and their parent Hamiltonian from a cocycle of the group cohomology $H^2(Z_3\times Z_3,U(1))$. The Hamiltonian is an SU(3) version of the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) model, consisting of bilinear and biquadratic terms of su(3) generators in the adjoint representation. A generalization to the SU($N$) case, the SU($N$) AKLT Hamiltonian, is also presented which realizes nontrivial $\mathbb{Z}_N$ SPT phases. We use the infinite-size variant of the density matrix renormalization group (iDMRG) method to determine the ground-state phase diagram of the SU(3) bilinear-biquadratic model as a function of the parameter $θ$ controlling the ratio of the bilinear and biquadratic coupling constants. The nontrivial $\mathbb{Z}_3$ SPT phase is found for a range of the parameter $θ$ including the point of vanishing biquadratic term ($θ=0$) as well as the SU(3) AKLT point [$θ=\arctan(2/9)$]. A continuous phase transition to the SU(3) dimer phase takes place at $θ\approx -0.027π$, with a central charge $c\approx3.2$. For SU(3) symmetric cases we define string order parameters for the $\mathbb{Z}_3$ SPT phases in a similar way to the conventional Haldane phase. We propose simple spin models that effectively realize the SU(3) and SU(4) AKLT models.

Dynamical spin structure factors of quantum spin nematic states

Dynamical spin structure factors of quantum spin nematic states are calculated in a spin-1/2 square-lattice J1-J2 model with ferromagnetic J1 and competing antiferromagnetic J2 interactions. To this end, we use a fermion representation, generalizing it to N flavors. We begin with a spin-triplet pairing state of fermion fields, called Z2 planar state, which is a stable saddle-point solution in the large-N limit in a finite parameter range where the couplings J1 and J2 compete strongly [R. Shindou and T. Momoi, Phys. Rev. B 80, 064410 (2009)]. Using a large-N expansion, we take into account fluctuations around this saddle point up to corrections of order 1/N. The dynamical spin structure factors thus obtained signify the existence of gapless q-linear director-wave (spin-wave) modes at q=(0,0) and gapped `gauge-field' like collective modes at q=(pi,pi), whose spectral weight vanishes as a linear and quadratic function of the momentum respectively. The low-energy collective modes contain fluctuations of nematic-director, spin, and gauge degrees of freedom. Associated with the gapless q-linear modes, we evaluate the temperature dependence of the nuclear spin relaxation rate 1/T1 in the low-temperature regime as 1/T1 \propto T^{2d-1}, where d is the effective spatial dimension.

Nematic phase and phase separation near saturation field in frustrated ferromagnets

We study the effects of quantum fluctuations in magnetic properties of quantum frustrated ferromagnets in a magnetic field. It is shown that a non-classical phase or a phase separation appears due to quantum fluctuations below the saturation field in a parameter range close to the classical zero-field phase boundary between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases, for the case that the classical antiferromagnetic state is not an eigenstate of the quantum model. As an example to which this argument is applicable, we study the S=1/2 J1-J2 Heisenberg model with ferromagnetic J1 (J1<0) on the bcc lattice using a dilute Bose gas approach. For -1.50097 < J1/J2 < -1.389, magnons form f-wave two-magnon bound states, leading to a spin nematic phase, and for -1.389 < J1/J2 < -0.48 a canted coplanar antiferromagnetic phase appears accompanied with a phase separation below the saturation field.

Spin-Nematic and Spin-Density-Wave Orders in Spatially Anisotropic Frustrated Magnets in a Magnetic Field

We develop a microscopic theory of finite-temperature spin-nematic orderings in three-dimensional spatially anisotropic magnets consisting of weakly-coupled frustrated spin-1/2 chains with nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor couplings in a magnetic field. Combining a field theoretical technique with density-matrix renormalization group results, we complete finite-temperature phase diagrams in a wide magnetic-field range that possess spin-bond-nematic and incommensurate spin-density-wave ordered phases. The effects of a four-spin interaction are also studied. The relevance of our results to quasi-one-dimensional edge-shared cuprate magnets such as LiCuVO4 is discussed.

NMR relaxation rate in the field-induced octupolar liquid phase of spin-1/2 J1-J2 frustrated chains

In the spin-1/2 frustrated chain with nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic exchange J1 and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic exchange J2 under magnetic field, magnetic multipolar-liquid (quadrupolar, octupolar, and hexadecapolar) phases are widely expanded from the saturation down to a low-field regime. Recently, we have clarified characteristic temperature and field dependence of the NMR relaxation rate 1/T_1 in the quadrupolar phase. In this paper, we examine those of 1/T_1 in the octupolar phase combining field theoretical method with numerical data. The relevance of the results to quasi one-dimensional J1-J2 magnets such as PbCuSO4(OH)2, Rb2Cu2Mo3O12 and Li2ZrCuO4 is shortly discussed.

Phase diagram of the classical Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a triangular lattice in applied magnetic field

The Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a two-dimensional triangular lattice is a paradigmatic problem in frustrated magnetism. Even in the classical limit, its properties are far from simple. The "120 degree" ground state favoured by the frustrated antiferromagnetic interactions contains a hidden chiral symmetry, and supports two distinct types of excitation. And famously, three distinct phases, including a collinear one-third magnetisation plateau, are stabilised by thermal fluctuations in applied magnetic field. The questions of symmetry-breaking raised by this model are deep and subtle, and after more than thirty years of study, many of the details of its phase diagram remain surprisingly obscure. In this paper we use modern Monte Carlo simulation techniques to determine the finite-temperature phase diagram of the classical Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a triangular lattice in applied magnetic field. At low to intermediate values of magnetic field, we find evidence for a continuous phase transition from the paramagnet into the collinear one-third magnetisation plateau, belonging to the three-state Potts universality class. We also find evidence for conventional Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions from the one-third magnetisation plateau into the canted "Y-state", and into the 2:1 canted phase found at high fields. However, the phase transition from the paramagnet into the 2:1 canted phase, while continuous, does not appear to fall into any conventional universality class. We argue that this, like the chiral phase transition discussed in zero field, deserves further study as an interesting example of a finite-temperature phase transition with compound order-parameter symmetry. We comment on the relevance of these results for experiments on magnetic materials with a triangular lattice.

Projective studies of spin nematics in a quantum frustrated ferromagnet

We study the ground state properties of the spin-1/2 frustrated ferromagnetic J1-J2 Heisenberg model on the square lattice, employing projected BCS wavefunctions with spin-triplet pairings of the spinon fields as trial wavefunctions. Based on the variational Monte Carlo analysis, we argue that, in the competing coupling regime, a certain type of the projected BCS wavefunction, dubbed the projected Z2 planar state, achieves the best optimal energy among the other competing states such as the ferromagnetic state and collinear antiferromagnetic state. Like in quantum spin liquids, the projected Z2 planar state preserves the translational symmetry of the square lattice. However, it is also accompanied by a d-wave ordering of the quadrupole moments, breaking the spin rotational symmetry. The state thus describes a quantum spin analogue of the nematic liquid crystals. The calculated static correlation functions also reveal that the projected Z2 planar state has a strong collinear antiferromagnetic fluctuation.

Spin nematic order in multiple-spin exchange models on the triangular lattice

We figure out that the ground state of a multiple-spin exchange model applicable to thin films of solid 3He possesses an octahedral spin nematic order. In the presence of magnetic field, it is deformed into an antiferro-quadrupolar order in the perpendicular spin plane, in which lattice Z3 rotational symmetry is also broken. Furthermore, this system shows a narrow magnetization plateau at half, m/m_{sat}=1/2, which resembles recent magnetization measurement [H. Nema et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 075301 (2009)].

SU(2) slave-boson formulation of spin nematic states in S=1/2 frustrated ferromagnets

An SU(2) slave boson formulation of bond-type spin nematic orders is developed in frustrated ferromagnets, where the spin nematic states are described as the resonating spin-triplet valence bond (RVB) states. The d-vectors of spin-triplet pairing ansatzes play the role of the directors in the bond-type spin quadrupolar states. The low-energy excitations around such spin-triplet RVB ansatzes generally comprise the (potentially massless) gauge bosons, massless Goldstone bosons, and spinon individual excitations. Extending the projective symmetry group argument to the spin-triplet ansatzes, we show how to identify the number of massless gauge bosons efficiently. Applying this formulation, we next (i) enumerate possible mean field solutions for the S=1/2 ferromagnetic J1-J2 Heisenberg model on the square lattice, with ferromagnetic nearest neighbor J1 and competing antiferromagnetic next-nearest neighbor J2, and (ii) argue their stability against small gauge fluctuations. As a result, two stable spin-triplet RVB ansatzes are found in the intermediate coupling regime around J1:J2 \simeq 1:0.4. One is the Z_2 Balian-Werthamer (BW) state stabilized by the Higgs mechanism and the other is the SU(2) chiral p-wave (Anderson-Brinkman-Morel) state stabilized by the Chern-Simon mechanism. The former Z_2 BW state in fact shows the same bond-type spin quadrupolar order as found in the previous exact diagonalization study [N. Shannon et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 027213 (2006)].

Phase diagram of the spin-1/2 $J_1$-$J_2$-$J_3$ Heisenberg model on the square lattice

We presents the results of an extensive numerical study of the phase diagram of the spin-1/2, \protect{$J_1$-$J_2$-$J_3$} Heisenberg model on a square lattice, for both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interactions $J_1$, using exact diagonalization with periodic and twisted boundary conditions. Comparison is made with published spin wave calculations. We show that quantum fluctuations play a very important role, changing both the extent and the wave vector of classical spiral phases, and leading to new quantum phases where the classical spiral states have a high degeneracy. These include a new phase with small or vanishing spin-stiffness, in addition to known valence-bond-solid and bond-nematic phases.

Finite-Temperature Mott Transition in Two-Dimensional Frustrated Hubbard Models

We investigate the Hubbard model on two typical frustrated lattices in two dimensions, the kagome lattice and the anisotropic triangular lattice, by means of the cellular dynamical mean field theory. We show that the metallic phase is stabilized up to fairly large Hubbard interactions under strong geometrical frustration in both cases, which results in heavy fermion behavior and several anomalous properties around the Mott transition point. In particular, for the anisotropic triangular lattice, we find novel reentrant behavior in the Mott transition in the moderately frustrated parameter regime, which is caused by the competition between Fermi-liquid formation and magnetic correlations. It is demonstrated that the reentrant behavior is a generic feature inherent in the Mott transition with intermediate geometrical frustration, and indeed in accordance with recent experimental findings for organic materials.

Duality relations and exotic orders in electronic ladder systems

We discuss duality relations in correlated electronic ladder systems to clarify mutual relations between various conventional and unconventional phases. For the generalized two-leg Hubbard ladder, we find two exact duality relations, and also one asymptotic relation which holds in the low-energy regime. These duality relations show that unconventional (exotic) density-wave orders such as staggered flux or circulating spin-current are directly mapped to conventional density-wave orders, which establishes the appearance of various exotic states with time-reversal and/or spin symmetry breaking. We also study duality relations in the SO(5) symmetry that was proposed to unify antiferromagnetism and d-wave superconductivity. We show that the same SO(5) symmetry also unifies circulating spin current order and s-wave superconductivity.
