Site-Order Optimization in the Density Matrix Renormalization Group via Multi-Site Rearrangement

In the approaches based on matrix-product states (MPSs), such as the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method, the ordering of the sites crucially affects the computational accuracy. We investigate the performance of an algorithm that searches for the optimal site order by iterative local site rearrangement. We improve the algorithm by expanding the range of site rearrangement and apply it to a one-dimensional quantum Heisenberg model with random site permutation. The results indicate that increasing the range of the site rearrangement significantly improves the computational accuracy of the DMRG method. In particular, increasing the rearrangement range from two to three sites reduces the average relative error in the ground-state energy by 65% to 94% in the cases we tested. We also discuss the computational cost of the algorithm and its application as a preprocessing for MPS-based calculations.

Ground-state phase diagram of an anisotropic S=1/2 ladder with alternating rung interactions

Employing mainly numerical methods, we explore the ground-state phase diagram of an anisotropic $S=1/2$ ladder, in which leg interactions are uniform and isotropic, while rung interactions are alternating and have a common Ising-type anisotropy. We determine the phase diagram in the case where $J_{\rm leg}=0.2$ (antiferromagnetic), $J_{\rm rung}=-1.0$ (ferromagnetic) and $|J_{\rm rung}'|\!\leq\!1.0$, the first one being the magnitude of the leg interaction and the second and third ones those of the rung interactions, which are alternating. It is emphasized that the system has a frustration when $J_{\rm rung}'$ is positive. We find that, in the frustrated region, the Haldane state appears as the ground state even when the Ising character of rung interactions is strong. This appearance of the Haldane phase is contrary to the ordinary situation, and it is called the inversion phenomenon concerning the interaction anisotropy. We also find that an incommensurate state becomes the ground state in a portion of the Haldane phase region.

Long distance entanglement in one-dimensional quantum systems under sinusoidal deformation

We investigate entanglement generation in one-dimensional quantum spin systems with the sinusoidal deformation. In the system, the energy scale of each local term in the Hamiltonian is modified according to a position-dependent function \sin^α[\fracπ{N} (x - \frac{1}{2})], where x is the position of the local term and N is the length of the system. We show that at zero temperature the system with α\ge 2 is able to generate a sizable entanglement between two spins at open edges even when the two spins are infinitely far apart. This long-distance entanglement is rather robust against thermal fluctuations and survives up to a temperature that decays with the system size slowly, in an algebraic form.

Spin-Nematic and Spin-Density-Wave Orders in Spatially Anisotropic Frustrated Magnets in a Magnetic Field

We develop a microscopic theory of finite-temperature spin-nematic orderings in three-dimensional spatially anisotropic magnets consisting of weakly-coupled frustrated spin-1/2 chains with nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor couplings in a magnetic field. Combining a field theoretical technique with density-matrix renormalization group results, we complete finite-temperature phase diagrams in a wide magnetic-field range that possess spin-bond-nematic and incommensurate spin-density-wave ordered phases. The effects of a four-spin interaction are also studied. The relevance of our results to quasi-one-dimensional edge-shared cuprate magnets such as LiCuVO4 is discussed.

Connecting distant ends of one-dimensional critical systems by a sine-square deformation

We study the one-dimensional quantum critical spin systems with the sine-square deformation, in which the energy scale in the Hamiltonian at the position $x$ is modified by the function $f_x = \sin^2\left[π{L}(x-1/2)]$, where $L$ is the length of the system. By investigating the entanglement entropy, spin correlation functions, and wave-function overlap, we show that the sine-square deformation changes the topology of the geometrical connection of the ground state drastically; Although the system apparently has open edges, the sine-square deformation links those ends and realizes the periodic ground state at the level of wave function. Our results propose a new method to control the topology of quantum states by energy-scale deformation.

Edge magnetism of Heisenberg model on honeycomb lattice

In our previous study, a single-branch of ferromagnetic magnon with linear dispersion is shown to exist near the (uncompensated) zigzag edge for Heisenberg model on honeycomb lattice. Here we develop a field-theory description for the edge magnon and find its dynamics is captured by the one-dimensional relativistic Klein-Gordon equation. It is intriguing that the boundary field theory for the edge magnon is tied up with its bulk counterpart, described by the two-dimensional Klein-Gordon equation. Furthermore, we also reveal how the parity symmetry relates evanescent modes on opposite edges in a honeycomb nanoribbon. By employing alternative methods, including Schwinger bosons and density-matrix renormalization group, we also demonstrate that the relativistic edge magnon is robust even when the Neel order in the bulk is destroyed by quantum fluctuations. The edge magnon is a direct consequence of uncompensated edge and may be verified in realistic materials by experimental probes.

NMR relaxation rate in the field-induced octupolar liquid phase of spin-1/2 J1-J2 frustrated chains

In the spin-1/2 frustrated chain with nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic exchange J1 and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic exchange J2 under magnetic field, magnetic multipolar-liquid (quadrupolar, octupolar, and hexadecapolar) phases are widely expanded from the saturation down to a low-field regime. Recently, we have clarified characteristic temperature and field dependence of the NMR relaxation rate 1/T_1 in the quadrupolar phase. In this paper, we examine those of 1/T_1 in the octupolar phase combining field theoretical method with numerical data. The relevance of the results to quasi one-dimensional J1-J2 magnets such as PbCuSO4(OH)2, Rb2Cu2Mo3O12 and Li2ZrCuO4 is shortly discussed.

Sine-square deformation of free fermion systems in one and higher dimensions

We study free fermion systems with the sine-square deformation (SSD), in which the energy scale of local Hamiltonians is modified according to the scaling function f(x)=sin^2[π(x-1/2)/L], where x is the position of the local Hamiltonian and L is the length of the system in the x direction. It has been revealed that when applied to one-dimensional critical systems the SSD realizes the translationally-invariant ground state which is the same as that of the uniform periodic system. In this paper, we propose a simple theory to explain how the SSD maintains the translational invariance in the ground-state wave function. In particular, for a certain one-dimensional system with SSD, it is shown that the ground state is exactly identical with the Fermi sea of the uniform periodic chain. We also apply the SSD to two-dimensional systems and show that the SSD is able to suppress the boundary modulations from the open edges extremely well, demonstrating that the SSD works in any dimensions and in any directions.

Phase diagram of the frustrated spin ladder

We re-visit the phase diagram of the frustrated spin-1/2 ladder with two competing inter-chain antiferromagnetic exchanges, rung coupling J_\perp and diagonal coupling J_\times. We suggest, based on the accurate renormalization group analysis of the low-energy Hamiltonian of the ladder, that marginal inter-chain current-current interaction plays central role in destabilizing previously predicted intermediate columnar dimer phase in the vicinity of classical degeneracy line J_\perp = 2J_\times. Following this insight we then suggest that changing these competing inter-chain exchanges from the previously considered antiferromagnetic to the ferromagnetic ones eliminates the issue of the marginal interactions altogether and dramatically expands the region of stability of the columnar dimer phase. This analytical prediction is convincingly confirmed by the numerical density matrix renormalization group and exact diagonalization calculations as well as by the perturbative calculation in the strong rung-coupling limit. The phase diagram for ferromagnetic J_\perp and J_\times is determined.

Spintronics at Nanoscale: Flat-Band Ferromagnetism in Armchair Nanoribbons and Nanotubes

We study the electronic correlation effects in armchair nanoribbon and nanotube using weak-coupling approach and non-Abelian density-matrix renormalization-group method. We show that upon appropriate doping, the system exhibits a new type of flat-band ferromagnetism, different from the well-known Milke-Tasaki one. The strongly correlated ground state consists of intrinsic magnetic moments of flat-band states and itinerant carriers of dispersive bands, and the exchange coupling between them yields a ferromagnetism. The resultant ferromagnetic state with metallic conductivity has a potential in spintronics applications at nanoscale.

Duality relations and exotic orders in electronic ladder systems

We discuss duality relations in correlated electronic ladder systems to clarify mutual relations between various conventional and unconventional phases. For the generalized two-leg Hubbard ladder, we find two exact duality relations, and also one asymptotic relation which holds in the low-energy regime. These duality relations show that unconventional (exotic) density-wave orders such as staggered flux or circulating spin-current are directly mapped to conventional density-wave orders, which establishes the appearance of various exotic states with time-reversal and/or spin symmetry breaking. We also study duality relations in the SO(5) symmetry that was proposed to unify antiferromagnetism and d-wave superconductivity. We show that the same SO(5) symmetry also unifies circulating spin current order and s-wave superconductivity.

Phase transitions in spin-orbital coupled model for pyroxene titanium oxides

We study the competing phases and the phase transition phenomena in an effective spin-orbital coupled model derived for pyroxene titanium oxides ATiSi2O6 (A=Na, Li). Using the mean-field-type analysis and the numerical quantum transfer matrix method, we show that the model exhibits two different ordered states, the spin-dimer and orbital-ferro state and the spin-ferro and orbital-antiferro state. The transition between two phases is driven by the relative strength of the Hund's-rule coupling to the onsite Coulomb repulsion and/or by the external magnetic field. The ground-state phase diagram is determined. There is a keen competition between orbital and spin degrees of freedom in the multicritical regime, which causes large fluctuations and significantly affects finite-temperature properties in the paramagnetic phase.

Ground-State and Thermodynamic Properties of the Quantum Mixed Spin-1/2-1/2-1-1 Chain

We investigate both analytically and numerically the ground-state and thermodynamic properties of the quantum mixed spin-1/2-1/2-1-1 chain described by the Hamiltonian $H=\sum_{\ell=1}^{N/4} (J_1\vecs_{4\ell-3}\cdot \vecs_{4\ell-2}+J_2\vecs_{4\ell-2}\cdot\vecS_{4\ell-1}+J_3\vecS_{4\ell-1}\cdot \vecS_{4\ell}+J_2\vecS_{4\ell}\cdot\vecs_{4\ell+1})$, where two $S=1/2$ spins ($\vecs_{4\ell-3}$ and $\vecs_{4\ell-2}$) and two S=1 spins ($\vecS_{4\ell-1}$ and $\vecS_{4\ell}$) are arranged alternatively. Inseveral limiting cases of $J_1$, $J_2$, and $J_3$ we apply the Wigner-Eckart theorem and carry out a perturbation calculation to examine the behavior of the massless lines where the energy gap vanishes. Performing a quantum Monte Carlo calculation without global flips at a sufficiently low temperature for the case where $J_1=J_3=1.0$ and $J_2>0$, we find that the ground state of the present system in this case undergoes a second-order phase transition accompanying the vanishing of the energy gap at $J_2=J_{2c$ with $J_{2 c} = 0.77 \pm 0.01$. We also find that the ground states for both $J_2 < J_{2 c$ and $J_2 > J_{2c$ can be understood by means of the valence-bond-solid picture. A quantum Monte Carlo calculation which takes the global flips along the Trotter direction into account is carried out to elucidate the temperature dependences of the specific heat and the magnetic susceptibility. In particular, it is found that the susceptibility per unit cell for $J_2=0.77$ with $J_1=J_3=1.0$ takes a finite value at absolute zero temperature and that the specific heat per unit cell versus temperature curve for $J_2=5.0$ with $J_1=J_3=1.0$ has a double peak.
