Unifying the Anderson Transitions in Hermitian and Non-Hermitian Systems

Non-Hermiticity enriches the 10-fold Altland-Zirnbauer symmetry class into the 38-fold symmetry class, where critical behavior of the Anderson transitions (ATs) has been extensively studied recently. Here, we propose a correspondence of the universality classes of the ATs between Hermitian and non-Hermitian systems. We illustrate that the critical exponents of the length scale in non-Hermitian systems coincide with the critical exponents in the corresponding Hermitian systems with additional chiral symmetry. A remarkable consequence of the correspondence is superuniversality, i.e., the ATs in some different symmetry classes of non-Hermitian systems are characterized by the same critical exponent. In addition to the comparisons between the known critical exponents for non-Hermitian systems and their Hermitian counterparts, we obtain the critical exponents in symmetry classes AI, AII, AII$^{\dagger}$, CII$^{\dagger}$, and DIII in two and three dimensions. Estimated critical exponents are consistent with the proposed correspondence. According to the correspondence, some of the exponents also give useful information of the unknown critical exponents in Hermitian systems, paving a way to study the ATs of Hermitian systems by the corresponding non-Hermitian systems.

Dissipationless Spin-Charge Conversion in Excitonic Pseudospin Superfluid

Spin-charge conversion by inverse spin Hall effect or inverse Rashba-Edelstein effect is prevalent in spintronics but dissipative. We propose a dissipationless spin-charge conversion mechanism by an excitonic pseudospin superfluid in an electron-hole double layer system. Magnetic exchange fields lift singlet-triplet degeneracy of interlayer exciton levels in the double layer system. Condensation of the singlet-triplet hybridized excitons breaks both a U(1) gauge symmetry and a pseudospin rotational symmetry around the fields, leading to spin-charge coupled superflow in the system. We demonstrate the mechanism by deriving spin-charge coupled Josephson equations for the excitonic superflow from a coupled quantum-dot model.

Universality classes of the Anderson Transitions Driven by non-Hermitian Disorder

An interplay between non-Hermiticity and disorder plays an important role in condensed matter physics. Here, we report the universal critical behaviors of the Anderson transitions driven by non-Hermitian disorders for three dimensional (3D) Anderson model and 3D U(1) model, which belong to 3D class ${\rm AI}^{\dagger}$ and 3D class A in the classification of non-Hermitian systems, respectively. Based on level statistics and finite-size scaling analysis, the critical exponent for length scale is estimated as $ν=0.99\pm 0.05$ for class ${\rm AI}^{\dagger}$, and $ν=1.09\pm 0.05 $ for class A, both of which are clearly distinct from the critical exponents for 3D orthogonal and 3D unitary classes, respectively. In addition, spectral rigidity, level spacing distribution, and level spacing ratio distribution are studied. These critical behaviors strongly support that the non-Hermiticity changes the universality classes of the Anderson transitions.

Berry curvature for coupled waves of magnons and electromagnetic waves

In this paper, we introduce Berry curvature, topological Chern number and topological chiral edge mode, that emerge from a hybridization between magnon and electromagnetic wave in a ferromagnet insulator. By focusing on the energy conservation, we first reformulate the Landau-Lifshitz-Maxwell equation into a Hermitian eigenvalue equation. From the eigenvalue equation, we define the Berry curvature of the magnon-photon coupled waves. We show that the Berry curvature thus introduced shows a prominent peak around a hybridization point between magnon mode and photon mode, and a massive hybrid mode takes a non-zero Chern number ($\pm 1$) due to the magnon-photon coupling. In accordance with the non-zero Chern number, the topological edge modes emerge inside the hybridization gap at a domain wall between two ferromagnetic insulators with opposite magnetizations.

Fate of a multiple-band Fermi liquid that is coupled with critical $ϕ^4$ bosons

Multiple-band nature of electronic energy bands leads to novel physical effects in solids. In this paper, we clarify physical properties of a Fermi system with a pair of electron and hole Fermi surfaces (FSs), whose coupling is mediated by a critical U(1) boson field. By using a one-loop renormalization group analysis, we show that when the boson field undergoes a quantum phase transition with broken U(1) symmetry, the multiple-band Fermi system shows a non-Fermi liquid (non-FL) behaviour in its thermodynamic and magnetic properties. At a quantum critical point (QCP), Fermi velocities of the two FSs are renormalized into a same critical velocity as a boson velocity, and the fermion's density of states (DOS) shows a pseudo-gap behaviour with a logarithmic energy dependence at the QCP.

Topological Boundary Modes from Translational Deformations

Localized states universally appear when a periodic potential is perturbed by defects or terminated at its surface. In this Letter, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate a mechanism that generates localized states through continuous translational deformations of periodic potentials. We provide a rigorous proof of the emergence of the localized states under the deformations. The mechanism is experimentally verified in microwave photonic crystals. We also demonstrate topological phase windings of reflected waves for translated photonic crystals.

Critical Behaviors of Anderson Transitions in Three Dimensional Orthogonal Classes with Particle-hole Symmetries

From transfer-matrix calculation of localization lengths and their finite-size scaling analyses, we evaluate critical exponents of the Anderson metal-insulator transition in three dimensional (3D) orthogonal class with particle-hole symmetry, class CI, as $ν=1.16\pm 0.02$. We further study disorder-driven quantum phase transitions in the 3D nodal line Dirac semimetal model, which belongs to class BDI, and estimate critical exponent as $ν=0.80\pm 0.02$. From a comparison of the critical exponents, we conclude that a disorder-driven re-entrant insulator-metal transition from the topological insulator phase in the class BDI to the diffusive metal phase belongs to the same universality class as the Anderson transition in the 3D class BDI. We also argue that an infinitesimally small disorder drives the nodal line Dirac semimetal in the clean limit to the diffusive metal.

Effect of Disorder in a Three-Dimensional Layered Chern Insulator

We studied effects of disorder in a three dimensional layered Chern insulator. By calculating the localization length and density of states numerically, we found two distict types of metallic phases between Anderson insulator and Chern insulator; one is diffusive metallic (DM) phase and the other is renormalized Weyl semimetal (WSM) phase. We show that longitudinal conductivity at the zero energy state remains finite in the renormalizd WSM phase as well as in the DM phase, while goes to zero at a semimetal-metal quantum phase transition point between these two. Based on the Einstein relation combined with the self-consistent Born analysis, we give a conductivity scaling near the quantum transition point.

Integer Quantum Magnon Hall Plateau-Plateau Transition in a Spin Ice Model

Low-energy magnon bands in a two-dimensional spin ice model become integer quantum magnon Hall bands. By calculating the localization length and the two-terminal conductance of magnon transport, we show that the magnon bands with disorders undergo a quantum phase transition from an integer quantum magnon Hall regime to a conventional magnon localized regime. Finite size scaling analysis as well as a critical conductance distribution shows that the quantum critical point belongs to the same universality class as that in the quantum Hall transition. We characterize thermal magnon Hall conductivity in disordered quantum magnon Hall system in terms of robust chiral edge magnon transport.

Nature of Possible Magnetic Phases in Frustrated Hyperkagome Iridate

Based on Kitaev-Heisenberg model with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions, we studied nature of possible magnetic phases in frustrated hyperkagome iridate, Na$_4$Ir$_{3}$O$_8$ (Na-438). Using Monte-Carlo simulation, we showed that the phase diagram is mostly covered by two competing magnetic ordered phases; Z$_2$ symmetry breaking (SB) phase and Z$_6$ SB phase, latter of which is stabilized by the classical order by disorder. These two phases are separated by a first order phase transition line with Z$_8$-like symmetry. The critical nature at the Z$_6$ SB ordering temperature is characterized by the 3D XY universality class, below which U(1) to Z$_6$ crossover phenomena appears; the Z$_6$ spin anisotropy becomes irrelevant in a length scale shorter than a crossover length $Λ_*$ while becomes relevant otherwise. A possible phenomenology of polycrystalline Na-438 is discussed based on this crossover phenomena.

Dirac fermions in Fe ultra-thin film

We show the existence of massive Dirac fermions in electronic band structures of a few Fe atomic layers with perpendicular magnetization. Based on a tight binding model fitted to ab-initio band structure, we observe four distinct massive Dirac fermions near the Fermi level, which result from atomic spin-orbit coupling of Fe and a band inversion between Fe $4s$-$3d_{x^2-y^2}$ hybrid orbital band and $3d_{xy}$ orbital band. These lead to a valence band with finite Chern integer (+2) and chiral edge modes near the Fermi level. When the chemical potential is set inside the Dirac gap by carrier doping, the Hall conductivity exhibits a plateau-like structure with quantized value $2\frac{e^2}{h}$, and orbital magnetization shows a prominent increase, latter of which is mostly due to chiral orbital motion of electrons along the edge modes. We discuss the stability of the Dirac fermions in Fe(001) monolayer on MgO(001) substrate and Fe(001) bilayer case.

Magnetostatic wave analog of integer quantum Hall state in patterned magnetic films

A magnetostatic spin wave analog of integer quantum Hall (IQH) state is proposed in realistic patterned ferromagnetic thin films. Due to magnetic shape anisotropy, magnetic moments in a thin film lie within the plane, while all spin-wave excitations are fully gapped. Under an out-of-plane magnetic field, the film acquires a finite magnetization, where some of the gapped magnons become significantly softened near a saturation field. It is shown that, owing to a spin-orbit locking nature of the magnetic dipolar interaction, these soft spin-wave volume-mode bands become chiral volume-mode bands with finite topological Chern integers. A bulk-edge correspondence in IQH physics suggests that such volume-mode bands are accompanied by a chiral magnetostatic spin-wave edge mode. The existence of the edge mode is justified both by micromagnetic simulations and by band calculations based on a linearized Landau-Lifshitz equation. Employing intuitive physical arguments, we introduce proper tight-binding models for these soft volume-mode bands. Based on the tight-binding models, we further discuss possible applications to other systems such as magnetic ultrathin films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA).

Chiral spin-wave edge modes in dipolar magnetic thin films

Based on a linearized Landau-Lifshitz equation, we show that two-dimensional periodic allay of ferromagnetic particles coupled with magnetic dipole-dipole interactions supports chiral spin-wave edge modes, when subjected under the magnetic field applied perpendicular to the plane. The mode propagates along a one-dimensional boundary of the system in a unidirectional way and it always has a chiral dispersion within a band gap for spin-wave volume modes. Contrary to the well-known Damon-Eshbach surface mode, the sense of the rotation depends not only on the direction of the field but also on the strength of the field; its chiral direction is generally determined by the sum of the so-called Chern integers defined for spin-wave volume modes below the band gap. Using simple tight-binding descriptions, we explain how the magnetic dipolar interaction endows spin-wave volume modes with non-zero Chern integers and how their values will be changed by the field.

Dynamical spin structure factors of quantum spin nematic states

Dynamical spin structure factors of quantum spin nematic states are calculated in a spin-1/2 square-lattice J1-J2 model with ferromagnetic J1 and competing antiferromagnetic J2 interactions. To this end, we use a fermion representation, generalizing it to N flavors. We begin with a spin-triplet pairing state of fermion fields, called Z2 planar state, which is a stable saddle-point solution in the large-N limit in a finite parameter range where the couplings J1 and J2 compete strongly [R. Shindou and T. Momoi, Phys. Rev. B 80, 064410 (2009)]. Using a large-N expansion, we take into account fluctuations around this saddle point up to corrections of order 1/N. The dynamical spin structure factors thus obtained signify the existence of gapless q-linear director-wave (spin-wave) modes at q=(0,0) and gapped `gauge-field' like collective modes at q=(pi,pi), whose spectral weight vanishes as a linear and quadratic function of the momentum respectively. The low-energy collective modes contain fluctuations of nematic-director, spin, and gauge degrees of freedom. Associated with the gapless q-linear modes, we evaluate the temperature dependence of the nuclear spin relaxation rate 1/T1 in the low-temperature regime as 1/T1 \propto T^{2d-1}, where d is the effective spatial dimension.

Topological chiral magnonic edge mode in a magnonic crystal

Topological phases have been explored in various fields in physics such as spintronics, photonics, liquid helium, correlated electron system and cold-atomic system. This leads to the recent foundation of emerging materials such as topological band insulators, topological photonic crystals and topological superconductors/superfluid. In this paper, we propose a topological magnonic crystal which provides protected chiral edge modes for magnetostatic spin waves. Based on a linearized Landau-Lifshitz equation, we show that a magnonic crystal with the dipolar interaction acquires spin-wave volume-mode band with non-zero Chern integer. We argue that such magnonic systems are accompanied by the same integer numbers of chiral spin-wave edge modes within a band gap for the volume-mode bands. In these edge modes, the spin wave propagates in a unidirectional manner without being scattered backward, which implements novel fault-tolerant spintronic devices.

Projective studies of spin nematics in a quantum frustrated ferromagnet

We study the ground state properties of the spin-1/2 frustrated ferromagnetic J1-J2 Heisenberg model on the square lattice, employing projected BCS wavefunctions with spin-triplet pairings of the spinon fields as trial wavefunctions. Based on the variational Monte Carlo analysis, we argue that, in the competing coupling regime, a certain type of the projected BCS wavefunction, dubbed the projected Z2 planar state, achieves the best optimal energy among the other competing states such as the ferromagnetic state and collinear antiferromagnetic state. Like in quantum spin liquids, the projected Z2 planar state preserves the translational symmetry of the square lattice. However, it is also accompanied by a d-wave ordering of the quadrupole moments, breaking the spin rotational symmetry. The state thus describes a quantum spin analogue of the nematic liquid crystals. The calculated static correlation functions also reveal that the projected Z2 planar state has a strong collinear antiferromagnetic fluctuation.

Disordered topological quantum critical points in three-dimensional systems

Generic non-magnetic disorder effects onto those topological quantum critical points (TQCP), which intervene the three-dimensional topological insulator and an ordinary insulator, are investigated. We first show that, in such 3-d TQCP, any backward scattering process mediated by the chemical-potential-type impurity is always canceled by its time-reversal (T-reversal) counter-process, because of the non-trivial Berry phase supported by these two processes in the momentum space. However, this cancellation can be generalized into only those backward scattering processes which conserve a certain internal degree of freedom, i.e. the parity density, while the `absolute' stability of the TQCP against any non-magnetic disorders is required by the bulk-edge correspondence. Motivated by this, we further derive the self-consistent-Born phase diagram in the presence of generic non-magnetic disorder potentials and argue the behaviour of the quantum conductivity correction in such cases. The distinction and similarity between the case with only the chemical-potential-type disorder and that with the generic non-magnetic disorders are finally summarized.

Quantum impurity spin in Majorana edge fermions

We show that Majorana edge modes of two-dimensional spin-triplet topological superconductors have Ising-like spin density whose direction is determined by the d-vector characterizing the spin-triplet pairing symmetry. Exchange coupling between an impurity spin (S=1/2) and Majorana edge modes is thus Ising-type. Under external magnetic field perpendicular to the Ising axis, the system can be mapped to a two-level system with Ohmic dissipation, which is equivalent to the anisotropic Kondo model. The magnetic response of the impurity spin can serve as a local experimental probe for the order parameter.

SU(2) slave-boson formulation of spin nematic states in S=1/2 frustrated ferromagnets

An SU(2) slave boson formulation of bond-type spin nematic orders is developed in frustrated ferromagnets, where the spin nematic states are described as the resonating spin-triplet valence bond (RVB) states. The d-vectors of spin-triplet pairing ansatzes play the role of the directors in the bond-type spin quadrupolar states. The low-energy excitations around such spin-triplet RVB ansatzes generally comprise the (potentially massless) gauge bosons, massless Goldstone bosons, and spinon individual excitations. Extending the projective symmetry group argument to the spin-triplet ansatzes, we show how to identify the number of massless gauge bosons efficiently. Applying this formulation, we next (i) enumerate possible mean field solutions for the S=1/2 ferromagnetic J1-J2 Heisenberg model on the square lattice, with ferromagnetic nearest neighbor J1 and competing antiferromagnetic next-nearest neighbor J2, and (ii) argue their stability against small gauge fluctuations. As a result, two stable spin-triplet RVB ansatzes are found in the intermediate coupling regime around J1:J2 \simeq 1:0.4. One is the Z_2 Balian-Werthamer (BW) state stabilized by the Higgs mechanism and the other is the SU(2) chiral p-wave (Anderson-Brinkman-Morel) state stabilized by the Chern-Simon mechanism. The former Z_2 BW state in fact shows the same bond-type spin quadrupolar order as found in the previous exact diagonalization study [N. Shannon et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 027213 (2006)].

Noncommutative geometry and nonabelian Berry phase in the wave-packet dynamics of Bloch electrons

Motivated by a recent proposal on the possibility of observing a monopole in the band structure, and by an increasing interest on the role of Berry phase in spintronics, we studied the adiabatic motion of a wave packet of Bloch functions, under a perturbation varying slowly and incommensurately to the lattice structure. We show using only the fundamental principles of quantum mechanics that its effective wave-packet dynamics is conveniently described by a set of equations of motion (EOM) for a semiclassical particle coupled to a nonabelian gauge field associated with a geometric Berry phase. Our EOM can be viewed as a generalization of the standard Ehrenfest's theorem, and their derivation was asymptotically exact in the framework of linear response theory. Our analysis is entirely based on the concept of local Bloch bands, a good starting point for describing the adiabatic motion of a wave packet. One of the advantages of our approach is that the various types of gauge fields were classified into two categories by their different physical origin: (i) projection onto specific bands, (ii) time-dependent local Bloch basis. Using those gauge fields, we write our EOM in a covariant form, whereas the gauge-invariant field strength stems from the noncommutativity of covariant derivatives along different axes of the reciprocal parameter space. The degeneracy of Bloch bands makes the gauge fields nonabelian. We applied our formalism to the analyses on various types of Hall and polarization currents. We highlighted their behavior under time reversal (T) and space inversion (I). The concept of parity polarization current was also introduced. Together with charge/spin Hall/polarization currents, this type of orbital current is expected to be a potential probe for detecting and controling Berry phase.
