Conjectures on reductive homogeneous spaces

We address some conjectures and open problems in "analysis of symmetries" which include the study of non-commutative harmonic analysis and discontinuous groups for reductive homogeneous spaces beyond the classical framework: (1) discrete series for non-symmetric homogeneous spaces $G/H$; (2) discontinuous group $Γ$ for $G/H$ beyond the Riemannian setting; (3) analysis on pseudo-Riemannian locally homogeneous spaces.

Distinguished representations of SO(n+1,1) x SO(n,1), periods and branching laws

Given irreducible representations $Π$ and $π$ of the rank one special orthogonal groups $G=SO(n+1,1)$ and $G'=SO(n,1)$ with nonsingular integral infinitesimal character, we state in terms of $θ$-stable parameter necessary and sufficient conditions so that \[ \operatorname{Hom}_{G'}(Π|_{G'}, π)\not = \{0\}. \] In the special case that both $Π$ and $π$ are tempered, this implies the Gross--Prasad conjectures for tempered representations of $SO(n+1,1) \times SO(n,1)$ which are nontrivial on the center. We apply these results to construct nonzero periods and distinguished representations. If both $Π$ and $ π$ have the trivial infinitesimal character $ρ$ then we use a theorem that the periods are nonzero on the minimal $K$-type to obtain a nontrivial bilinear form on the $({\mathfrak g},K)$-cohomology of the representations.

Classification of differential symmetry breaking operators for differential forms

We give a complete classification of conformally covariant differential operators between the spaces of differential $i$-forms on the sphere $S^n$ and $j$-forms on the totally geodesic hypersphere $S^{n-1}$ by analyzing the restriction of principal series representations of the Lie group $O(n+1,1)$. Further, we provide explicit formulæ for these matrix-valued operators in the flat coordinates and find factorization identities for them.

Conformal symmetry breaking operators for differential forms on spheres

We give a complete classification of conformally covariant differential operators between the spaces of $i$-forms on the sphere $S^n$ and $j$-forms on the totally geodesic hypersphere $S^{n-1}$. Moreover, we find explicit formulæ for these new matrix-valued operators in the flat coordinates in terms of basic operators in differential geometry and classical orthogonal polynomials. We also establish matrix-valued factorization identities among all possible combinations of conformally covariant differential operators. The main machinery of the proof is the "F-method" based on the "algebraic Fourier transform of Verma modules" (Kobayashi-Pevzner [Selecta Math. 2016]) and its extension to matrix-valued case developed here. A short summary of the main results was announced in [C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris, 2016].

Intrinsic sound of anti-de Sitter manifolds

As is well-known for compact Riemann surfaces, eigenvalues of the Laplacianbare distributed discretely and most of eigenvalues vary viewed as functions on the Teichmuller space. We discuss a new feature in the Lorentzian geometry, or more generally, in pseudo-Riemannian geometry. One of the distinguished features is that $L^2$-eigenvalues of the Laplacian may be distributed densely in R in pseudo-Riemannian geometry. For three-dimensional anti-de Sitter manifolds, we also explain another feature proved in joint with F. Kassel [Adv. Math. 2016] that there exist countably many $L^2$-eigenvalues of the Laplacian that are stable under any small deformation of anti-de Sitter structure.

A program for branching problems in the representation theory of real reductive groups

We wish to understand how irreducible representations of a group G behave when restricted to a subgroup G' (the branching problem). Our primary concern is with representations of reductive Lie groups, which involve both algebraic and analytic approaches. We divide branching problems into three stages: (A) abstract features of the restriction; (B) branching laws (irreducible decompositions of the restriction); and (C) construction of symmetry breaking operators on geometric models. We could expect a simple and detailed study of branching problems in Stages B and C in the settings that are {\it{a priori}} known to be "nice" in Stage A, and conversely, new results and methods in Stage C that might open another fruitful direction of branching problems including Stage A. The aim of this article is to give new perspectives on the subjects, to explain the methods based on some recent progress, and to raise some conjectures and open questions.

Branching laws for Verma modules and applications in parabolic geometry. I

We initiate a new study of differential operators with symmetries and combine this with the study of branching laws for Verma modules of reductive Lie algebras. By the criterion for discretely decomposable and multiplicity-free restrictions of generalized Verma modules [T. Kobayashi, http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s00031-012-9180-y {Transf. Groups (2012)}], we are brought to natural settings of parabolic geometries for which there exist unique equivariant differential operators to submanifolds. Then we apply a new method (F-method) relying on the Fourier transform to find singular vectors in generalized Verma modules, which significantly simplifies and generalizes many preceding works. In certain cases, it also determines the Jordan--Hölder series of the restriction for singular parameters. The F-method yields an explicit formula of such unique operators, for example, giving an intrinsic and new proof of Juhl's conformally invariant differential operators [Juhl, http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-7643-9900-9 {Progr. Math. 2009}] and its generalizations. This article is the first in the series, and the next ones include their extension to curved cases together with more applications of the F-method to various settings in parabolic geometries.

Classification of finite-multiplicity symmetric pairs

We give a complete classification of the reductive symmetric pairs (G,H) for which the homogeneous space $(G \times H)/diag(H)$ is real spherical in the sense that a minimal parabolic subgroup has an open orbit. Combining with a criterion established in [T. Kobayashi--T. Oshima, Adv. Math. 2013], we give a necessary and sufficient condition for a reductive symmetric pair $(G,H)$ such that the multiplicities for the branching law of the restriction any admissible smooth representation of $G$ to $H$ have finiteness/boundedness property.

Differential symmetry breaking operators. I-Genreal theory and F-method. II-Rankin-Cohen Operators for Symmetric Pairs

Part I. We prove a one-to-one correspondence between differential symmetry breaking operators for equivariant vector bundles over two homogeneous spaces and certain homomorphisms for representations of two Lie algebras, in connection with branching problems of the restriction of representations. We develop a new method (F-method) based on the algebraic Fourier transform for generalized Verma modules, which characterizes differential symmetry breaking operators by means of certain systems of partial differential equations. In contrast to the setting of real flag varieties, continuous symmetry breaking operators of Hermitian symmetric spaces are proved to be differential operators in the holomorphic setting. In this case symmetry breaking operators are characterized by differential equations of second order via the F-method. Part II. Rankin--Cohen brackets are symmetry breaking operators for the tensor product of two holomorphic discrete series representations of SL(2,R). We address a general problem to find explicit formulae for such intertwining operatorsin the setting of multiplicity-free branching laws for reductive symmetric pairs. We discover explicit formulae of new differential symmetry breaking operators for all the six different complex geometries arising from semisimple symmetric pairs of split rank one, and reveal an intrinsic reason why the coefficients of orthogonal polynomials appear in these operators (Rankin--Cohen type) in the three geometries and why normal derivatives are symmetry breaking operators in the other three cases. Further, we analyze a new phenomenon that the multiplicities in the branching laws of Verma modules may jump up at singular parameters.

Shintani functions, real spherical manifolds, and symmetry breaking operators

For a pair of reductive groups $G \supset G'$, we prove a geometric criterion for the space $Sh(λ, ν)$ of Shintani functions to be finite-dimensional in the Archimedean case. This criterion leads us to a complete classification of the symmetric pairs $(G,G')$ having finite-dimensional Shintani spaces. A geometric criterion for uniform boundedness of $dim Sh(λ, ν)$ is also obtained. Furthermore, we prove that symmetry breaking operators of the restriction of smooth admissible representations yield Shintani functions of moderate growth, of which the dimension is determined for $(G, G') = (O(n+1,1), O(n,1))$.

Vector-valued covariant differential operators for the Möbius transformation

We obtain a family of functional identities satisfied by vector-valued functions of two variables and their geometric inversions. For this we introduce particular differential operators of arbitrary order attached to Gegenbauer polynomials. These differential operators are symmetry breaking for the pair of Lie groups $(SL(2,\mathbb C), SL(2,\mathbb R))$ that arise from conformal geometry.

Classification of symmetric pairs with discretely decomposable restrictions of (g,K)-modules

We give a complete classification of reductive symmetric pairs (g, h) with the following property: there exists at least one infinite-dimensional irreducible (g,K)-module X that is discretely decomposable as an (h,H \cap K)-module. We investigate further if such X can be taken to be a minimal representation, a Zuckerman derived functor module A_q(λ), or some other unitarizable (g,K)-module. The tensor product $π_1 \otimes π_2$ of two infinite-dimensional irreducible (g,K)-modules arises as a very special case of our setting. In this case, we prove that $π_1 \otimes π_2$ is discretely decomposable if and only if they are simultaneously highest weight modules.

F-method for symmetry breaking operators

We provide some insights in the study of branching problems of reductive groups, and a method of investigations into symmetry breaking operators. First, we give geometric criteria for finiteness property of linearly independent continuous (respectively, differential) operators that intertwine two induced representations of reductive Lie groups and their reductive subgroups. Second, we extend the F-method known for local operators to non-local operators. We then illustrate the idea by concrete examples in conformal geometry, and explain how the F-method works for detailed analysis of symmetry breaking operators, e.g., finding functional equations and explicit residue formulae of regular symmetry breaking operators with meromorphic parameters.

Finite multiplicity theorems for induction and restriction

We find upper and lower bounds of the multiplicities of irreducible admissible representations $π$ of a semisimple Lie group $G$ occurring in the induced representations $Ind_H^Gτ$ from irreducible representations $τ$ of a closed subgroup $H$. As corollaries, we establish geometric criteria for finiteness of the dimension of $Hom_G(π,Ind_H^G τ)$ (induction) and of $Hom_H(π|_H,τ)$ (restriction) by means of the real flag variety $G/P$, and discover that uniform boundedness property of these multiplicities is independent of real forms and characterized by means of the complex flag variety.

Poincaré series for non-Riemannian locally symmetric spaces

The discrete spectrum of the Laplacian has been extensively studied on reductive symmetric spaces and on Riemannian locally symmetric spaces. Here we examine it for the first time in the general setting of non-Riemannian, reductive, locally symmetric spaces. For any non-Riemannian, reductive symmetric space X on which the discrete spectrum of the Laplacian is nonempty, and for any discrete group of isometries Gamma whose action on X is sufficiently proper, we construct L^2-eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on X_{Gamma}:=Gamma\X for an infinite set of eigenvalues. These eigenfunctions are obtained as generalized Poincaré series, i.e. as projections to X_{Gamma} of sums, over the Gamma-orbits, of eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on X. We prove that the Poincaré series we construct still converge, and define nonzero L^2-functions, after any small deformation of Gamma, for a large class of groups Gamma. In other words, the infinite set of eigenvalues we construct is stable under small deformations. This contrasts with the classical setting where the nonzero discrete spectrum varies on the Teichmüller space of a compact Riemann surface. We actually construct joint L^2-eigenfunctions for the whole commutative algebra of invariant differential operators on X_{Gamma}.

Symmetry breaking for representations of rank one orthogonal groups

We give a complete classification of intertwining operators (symmetry breaking operators) between spherical principal series representations of G=O(n+1,1) and G'=O(n,1). We construct three meromorphic families of the symmetry breaking operators, and find their distribution kernels and their residues at all poles explicitly.Symmetry breaking operators at exceptional discrete parameters are thoroughly studied. We obtain closed formulae for the functional equations which the composition of the the symmetry breaking operators with the Knapp-Stein intertwining operators of $G$ and G' satisfy, and use them to determine the symmetry breaking operators between irreducible composition factors of the spherical principal series representations of G and G'. Some applications are included.

Transmission-phase measurement of the 0.7 anomaly in a quantum point contact

We measure the transmission phase of a quantum point contact (QPC) at a low carrier density in which electron interaction is expected to play an important role and anomalous behaviors are observed. In the first conductance plateau, the transmission phase shifts monotonically as the carrier density is decreased by the gate voltage. When the conductance starts to decrease, in what is often called the 0.7 regime, the phase exhibits an anomalous increase compared with the noninteracting model. The observation implies an increase in the wave vector as the carrier density is decreased, suggesting a transition to a spin-incoherent Luttinger liquid.

Classification of discretely decomposable A_q(λ) with respect to reductive symmetric pairs

We give a classification of the triples (g,g',q) such that Zuckerman's derived functor (g,K)-module A_q(λ) for a θ-stable parabolic subalgebra q is discretely decomposable with respect to a reductive symmetric pair (g,g'). The proof is based on the criterion for discretely decomposable restrictions by the first author and on Berger's classification of reductive symmetric pairs.

Fock model and Segal-Bargmann transform for minimal representations of Hermitian Lie groups

For any Hermitian Lie group G of tube type we construct a Fock model of its minimal representation. The Fock space is defined on the minimal nilpotent K_C-orbit X in p_C and the L^2-inner product involves a K-Bessel function as density. Here K is a maximal compact subgroup of G, and g_C=k_C+p_C is a complexified Cartan decomposition. In this realization the space of k-finite vectors consists of holomorphic polynomials on X. The reproducing kernel of the Fock space is calculated explicitly in terms of an I-Bessel function. We further find an explicit formula of a generalized Segal-Bargmann transform which intertwines the Schroedinger and Fock model. Its kernel involves the same I-Bessel function. Using the Segal--Bargmann transform we also determine the integral kernel of the unitary inversion operator in the Schroedinger model which is given by a J-Bessel function.

Minimal representations via Bessel operators

We construct an L^2-model of "very small" irreducible unitary representations of simple Lie groups G which, up to finite covering, occur as conformal groups Co(V) of simple Jordan algebras V. If $V$ is split and G is not of type A_n, then the representations are minimal in the sense that the annihilators are the Joseph ideals. Our construction allows the case where G does not admit minimal representations. In particular, applying to Jordan algebras of split rank one we obtain the entire complementary series representations of SO(n,1)_0. A distinguished feature of these representations in all cases is that they attain the minimum of the Gelfand--Kirillov dimensions among irreducible unitary representations. Our construction provides a unified way to realize the irreducible unitary representations of the Lie groups in question as Schroedinger models in L^2-spaces on Lagrangian submanifolds of the minimal real nilpotent coadjoint orbits. In this realization the Lie algebra representations are given explicitly by differential operators of order at most two, and the key new ingredient is a systematic use of specific second-order differential operators (Bessel operators) which are naturally defined in terms of the Jordan structure.

Restrictions of generalized Verma modules to symmetric pairs

We initiate a new line of investigation on branching problems for generalized Verma modules with respect to complex reductive symmetric pairs (g,k). Here we note that Verma modules of g may not contain any simple module when restricted to a reductive subalgebra k in general. In this article, using the geometry of K_C orbits on the generalized flag variety G_C/P_C, we give a necessary and sufficient condition on the triple (g,k, p) such that the restriction X|_k always contains simple k-modules for any g-module $X$ lying in the parabolic BGG category O^p attached to a parabolic subalgebra p of g. Formulas are derived for the Gelfand-Kirillov dimension of any simple k-module occurring in a simple generalized Verma module of g. We then prove that the restriction X|_k is multiplicity-free for any generic g-module X \in O if and only if (g,k) is isomorphic to a direct sum of (A_n,A_{n-1}), (B_n,D_n), or (D_{n+1},B_n). We also see that the restriction X|_k is multiplicity-free for any symmetric pair (g, k) and any parabolic subalgebra p with abelian nilradical and for any generic g-module X \in O^p. Explicit branching laws are also presented.

Varna Lecture on L^2-Analysis of Minimal Representations

Minimal representations of a real reductive group G are the "smallest" irreducible unitary representations of G. The author suggests a program of global analysis built on minimal representations from the philosophy: small representation of a group = large symmetries in a representation space. This viewpoint serves as a driving force to interact algebraic representation theory with geometric analysis of minimal representations, yielding a rapid progress on the program. We give a brief guidance to recent works with emphasis on the Schroedinger model.

Branching problems of Zuckerman derived functor modules

We discuss recent developments on branching problems of irreducible unitary representations $π$ of real reductive groups when restricted to reductive subgroups. Highlighting the case where the underlying $(g,K)$-modules of $π$ are isomorphic to Zuckerman's derived functor modules $A_q(λ)$, we show various and rich features of branching laws such as infinite multiplicities, irreducible restrictions, multiplicity-free restrictions, and discrete decomposable restrictions. We also formulate a number of conjectures.

Orthogonal polynomials associated to a certain fourth order differential equation

We introduce orthogonal polynomials $M_j^{μ,\ell}(x)$ as eigenfunctions of a certain self-adjoint fourth order differential operator depending on two parameters $μ\in\mathbb{C}$ and $\ell\in\mathbb{N}_0$. These polynomials arise as $K$-finite vectors in the $L^2$-model of the minimal unitary representations of indefinite orthogonal groups, and reduce to the classical Laguerre polynomials $L_j^μ(x)$ for $\ell=0$. We establish various recurrence relations and integral representations for our polynomials, as well as a closed formula for the $L^2$-norm. Further we show that they are uniquely determined as polynomial eigenfunctions.

Propagation of multiplicity-freeness property for holomorphic vector bundles

We give a complete proof of a propagation theorem of multiplicity-free property from fibers to spaces of global sections for holomorphic vector bundles. The propagation theorem is formalised in three ways, aiming for producing various multiplicity-free theorems in representation theory for both finite and infinite dimensional cases in a systematic and synthetic manner. The key geometric condition in our theorem is an orbit-preserving anti-holomorphic diffeomorphism on the base space, which brings us to the concept of visible actions on complex manifolds.

Special functions associated to a certain fourth order differential equation

We develop a theory of "special functions" associated to a certain fourth order differential operator $\mathcal{D}_{μ,ν}$ on $\mathbb{R}$ depending on two parameters $μ,ν$. For integers $μ,ν\geq-1$ with $μ+ν\in2\mathbb{N}_0$ this operator extends to a self-adjoint operator on $L^2(\mathbb{R}_+,x^{μ+ν+1}dx)$ with discrete spectrum. We find a closed formula for the generating functions of the eigenfunctions, from which we derive basic properties of the eigenfunctions such as orthogonality, completeness, $L^2$-norms, integral representations and various recurrence relations. This fourth order differential operator $\mathcal{D}_{μ,ν}$ arises as the radial part of the Casimir action in the Schrödinger model of the minimal representation of the group $O(p,q)$, and our "special functions" give $K$-finite vectors.

Algebraic analysis of minimal representations

Small representations of a group bring us to large symmetries in a representation space. Analysis on minimal representations utilises large symmetries in their geometric models, and serves as a driving force in creating new interesting problems that interact with other branches of mathematics. This article discusses the following three topics that arise from minimal representations of the indefinite orthogonal group: 1. construction of conservative quantities for ultra-hyperbolic equations, 2. quantative discrete branching laws, 3. deformation of the Fourier transform with emphasis on the prominent roles of Sato's idea on algebraic analysis.

An integral formula for L^2-eigenfunctions of a fourth order Bessel-type differential operator

We find an explicit integral formula for the eigenfunctions of a fourth order differential operator against the kernel involving two Bessel functions. Our formula establishes the relation between K-types in two different realizations of the minimal representation of the indefinite orthogonal group, namely the L^2-model and the conformal model.

Geometric analysis on small unitary representations of GL(N,R)

The most degenerate unitary principal series representations π_{iλ,δ} (with λ \in R, δ\in Z/2Z) of G = GL(N,R) attain the minimum of the Gelfand-Kirillov dimension among all irreducible unitary representations of G. This article gives an explicit formula of the irreducible decomposition of the restriction π_{iλ,δ}|_H (branching law) with respect to all symmetric pairs (G,H). For N=2n with n \geq 2, the restriction π_{iλ,δ}|_H remains irreducible for H=Sp(n,R) if λ\neq0 and splits into two irreducible representations if λ=0. The branching law of the restriction π_{iλ,δ}|_H is purely discrete for H = GL(n,C), consists only of continuous spectrum for H = GL(p,R) \times GL(q,R) (p+q=N), and contains both discrete and continuous spectra for H=O(p,q) (p>q\geq1). Our emphasis is laid on geometric analysis, which arises from the restriction of `small representations' to various subgroups.

The Schrodinger model for the minimal representation of the indefinite orthogonal group O(p, q)

We introduce the `Fourier transform' F_C on the isotropic cone C associated to an indefinite quadratic form of signature (n_1,n_2) on R^n (n=n_1+n_2: even). This transform is in some sense the unique and natural unitary operator on L^2(C), as is the case with the Euclidean Fourier transform. Inspired by recent developments of algebraic representation theory of reductive groups, we shed new light on classical analysis on the one hand, and give the global formulas for the L^2-model of the minimal representation of the simple Lie group G=O(n_1+1,n_2+1) on the other hand. The transform F_C expands functions on C into joint eigenfunctions of the n commuting, self-adjoint, second order differential operators. We decompose F_C into the singular Radon transform and the Mellin--Barnes integral, find its distribution kernel, and establish the inversion and the Plancherel formula. F_C reduces to the Hankel transform if G is O(n,2) or O(3,3). The unitary operator F_C together with the simple action of the conformal transformation group generates the minimal representation of the indefinite orthogonal group G. Various different models of the same representation have been constructed by Kazhdan, Kostant, Binegar-Zierau, Gross-Wallach, Zhu-Huang, Torasso, Brylinski, and Kobayashi-Orsted, and others. Among them, our model built on L^2(C) generalizes the classic Schrodinger model of the Weil representation. Yet another motif is special functions. Large group symmetries in the minimal representation yield functional equations of various special functions. We find explicit K-finite vectors on L^2(C), and give a new proof of the Plancherel formula for Meijer's G-transforms.

A generalized Cartan decomposition for the double coset space U(n_1) x U(n_2) x U(n_3)) U(n) / U(p) x U(q)

Motivated by recent developments on visible actions on complex manifolds, we raise a question whether or not the multiplication of three subgroups $L$, $G'$ and $H$ surjects a Lie group $G$ in the setting that $G/H$ carries a complex structure and contains $G'/G' \cap H$ as a totally real submanifold. Particularly important cases are when $G/L$ and $G/H$ are generalized flag varieties, and we classify pairs of Levi subgroups $(L, H)$ such that $L G' H = G$, or equivalently, the real generalized flag variety $G'/H \cap G'$ meets every $L$-orbit on the complex generalized flag variety $G/H$ in the setting that $(G, G') = (U(n), O(n))$. For such pairs $(L, H)$, we introduce a \textit{herringbone stitch} method to find a generalized Cartan decomposition for the double coset space $L \backslash G/H$, for which there has been no general theory in the non-symmetric case. Our geometric results provides a unified proof of various multiplicity-free theorems in representation theory of general linear groups.

Deformation of Properly Discontinuous Actions of Z^k on R^{k+1}

We consider the deformation of a discontinuous group acting on the Euclidean space by affine transformations. A distinguished feature here is that even a `small' deformation of a discrete subgroup may destroy proper discontinuity of its action. In order to understand the local structure of the deformation space of discontinuous groups, we introduce the concepts from a group theoretic perspective, and focus on `stability' and `local rigidity' of discontinuous groups. As a test case, we give an explicit description of the deformation space of Z^k acting properly discontinuously on R^{k+1} by affine nilpotent transformations. Our method uses an idea of `continuous analogue' and relies on the criterion of proper actions on nilmanifolds.

Multiplicity-free theorems of the restrictions of unitary highest weight modules with respect to reductive symmetric pairs

The complex analytic methods have found a wide range of applications in the study of multiplicity-free representations. This article discusses, in particular, its applications to the question of restricting highest weight modules with respect to reductive symmetric pairs. We present a number of multiplicity-free branching theorems that include the multiplicity-free property of some of known results such as the Clebsh--Gordan--Pieri formula for tensor products, the Plancherel theorem for Hermitian symmetric spaces (also for line bundle cases), the Hua--Kostant--Schmid $K$-type formula, and the canonical representations in the sense of Vershik--Gelfand--Graev. Our method works in a uniform manner for both finite and infinite dimensional cases, for both discrete and continuous spectra, and for both classical and exceptional cases.

On discontinuous group actions on non-Riemannian homogeneous spaces

This article gives an up-to-date account of the theory of discrete group actions on non-Riemannian homogeneous spaces. As an introduction of the motifs of this article, we begin by reviewing the current knowledge of possible global forms of pseudo-Riemannian manifolds with constant curvatures, and discuss what kind of problems we propose to pursue. For pseudo-Riemannian manifolds, isometric actions of discrete groups are not always properly discontinuous. The fundamental problem is to understand when discrete subgroups of Lie groups $G$ act properly discontinuously on homogeneous spaces $G/H$ for non-compact $H$. For this, we introduce the concepts from a group-theoretic perspective, including the `discontinuous dual' of $G/H$ that recovers $H$ in a sense. We then summarize recent results giving criteria for the existence of properly discontinuous subgroups, and the known results and conjectures on the existence of cocompact ones. The final section discusses the deformation theory and in particular rigidity results for cocompact properly discontinuous groups for pseudo-Riemannian symmetric spaces.

The inversion formula and holomorphic extension of the minimal representation of the conformal group

The minimal representation $π$ of the indefinite orthogonal group $O(m+1,2)$ is realized on the Hilbert space of square integrable functions on $\mathbb R^m$ with respect to the measure $|x|^{-1} dx_1... dx_m$. This article gives an explicit integral formula for the holomorphic extension of $π$ to a holomorphic semigroup of $O(m+3, \mathbb C)$ by means of the Bessel function. Taking its `boundary value', we also find the integral kernel of the `inversion operator' corresponding to the inversion element on the Minkowski space $\mathbb R^{m,1}$.

Visible actions on symmetric spaces

A visible action on a complex manifold is a holomorphic action that admits a $J$-transversal totally real submanifold $S$. It is said to be strongly visible if there exists an orbit-preserving anti-holomorphic diffeomorphism $σ$ such that $σ|_S = \mathrm{id}$. In this paper, we prove that for any Hermitian symmetric space $D = G/K$ the action of any symmetric subgroup $H$ is strongly visible. The proof is carried out by finding explicitly an orbit-preserving anti-holomorphic involution and a totally real submanifold $S$. Our geometric results provide a uniform proof of various multiplicity-free theorems of irreducible highest weight modules when restricted to reductive symmetric pairs, for both classical and exceptional cases, for both finite and infinite dimensional cases, and for both discrete and continuous spectra.

Compact Clifford-Klein forms of symmetric spaces -- revisited

This article discusses the existence problem of a compact quotient of a symmetric space by a properly discontinuous group with emphasis on the non-Riemannian case. Discontinuous groups are not always abundant in a homogeneous space $G/H$ if $H$ is non-compact. The first half of the article elucidates general machinery to study discontinuous groups for $G/H$, followed by the most update and complete list of symmetric spaces with/without compact quotients. In the second half, as applications of general theory, we prove: (i) there exists a 15 dimensional compact pseudo-Riemannian manifold of signature $(7,8)$ with constant curvature, (ii) there exists a compact quotient of the complex sphere of dimension 1, 3 and 7, and (iii) there exists a compact quotient of the tangential space form of signature $(p,q)$ if and only if $p$ is smaller than the Hurwitz-Radon number of $q$.

Branching problems of unitary representations

The irreducible decomposition of a unitary representation often contains continuous spectrum when restricted to a non-compact subgroup. The author singles out a nice class of branching problems where each irreducible summand occurs discretely with finite multiplicity (admissible restrictions). Basic theory and new perspectives of admissible restrictions are presented from both analytic and algebraic view points. We also discuss some applications of admissible restrictions to modular varieties and $L^p$-harmonic analysis.

Analysis on the minimal representation of O(p,q) -- I. Realization via conformal geometry

This is the first in a series of papers devoted to an analogue of the metaplectic representation, namely, the minimal unitary representation of an indefinite orthogonal group; this representation corresponds to the minimal nilpotent coadjoint orbit in the philosophy of Kirillov-Kostant. We begin by applying methods from conformal geometry of pseudo-Riemannian manifolds to a general construction of an infinite-dimensional representation of the conformal group on the solution space of the Yamabe equation. By functoriality of the constructions, we obtain different models of the unitary representation, as well as giving new proofs of unitarity and irreducibility. The results in this paper play a basic role in the subsequent papers, where we give explicit branching formulae, and prove unitarization in the various models.

Analysis on the minimal representation of O(p,q) -- II. Branching laws

This is a second paper in a series devoted to the minimal unitary representation of O(p,q). By explicit methods from conformal geometry of pseudo-Riemannian manifolds, we find the branching law corresponding to restricting the minimal unitary representation to natural symmetric subgroups. In the case of purely discrete spectrum we obtain the full spectrum and give an explicit Parseval-Plancherel formula, and in the general case we construct an infinite discrete spectrum.

For the group O(p,q) we give a new construction of its minimal unitary representation via Euclidean Fourier analysis. This is an extension of the q = 2 case, where the representation is the mass zero, spin zero representation realized in a Hilbert space of solutions to the wave equation. The group O(p,q) acts as the Moebius group of conformal transformations on R^{p-1, q-1}, and preserves a space of solutions of the ultrahyperbolic Laplace equation on R^{p-1, q-1}. We construct in an intrinsic and natural way a Hilbert space of ultrahyperbolic solutions so that O(p,q) becomes a continuous irreducible unitary representation in this Hilbert space. We also prove that this representation is unitarily equivalent to the representation on L^2(C), where C is the conical subvariety of the nilradical of a maximal parabolic subalgebra obtained by intersecting with the minimal nilpotent orbit in the Lie algebra of O(p,q).
