Planar Novikov-Shubin invariant for adjacency matrices of structured directed dense random graphs

The Novikov-Shubin invariant associated to a graph provides information about the accumulation of eigenvalues of the corresponding adjacency matrix close to the origin. For a directed graph these eigenvalues lie in the complex plane and having a finite value for the planar Novikov-Shubin invariant indicates a polynomial behaviour of the eigenvalue density as a function of the distance to zero. We provide a complete description of these invariants for dense random digraphs with constant batch sizes, i.e. for the directed stochastic block model. The invariants depend only on which batches in the graph are connected by non-zero edge densities. We present an explicit finite step algorithm for their computation. For the proof we identify the asymptotic spectral density with the distribution of a CK\mathbb{C}^K-valued circular element in operator-valued free probability theory. We determine the spectral density in the bulk regime by solving the associated Dyson equation and infer the singular behaviour of this density close to the origin by determining the exponents associated to the power law with which the resolvent entries of the adjacency matrix that corresponds to the individual batches diverge to infinity or converge to zero.

Inhomogeneous Circular Law for Correlated Matrices

We consider non-Hermitian random matrices X∈Cn×nX \in \mathbb{C}^{n \times n} with general decaying correlations between their entries. For large nn, the empirical spectral distribution is well approximated by a deterministic density, expressed in terms of the solution to a system of two coupled non-linear n×nn \times n matrix equations. This density is interpreted as the Brown measure of a linear combination of free circular elements with matrix coefficients on a non-commutative probability space. It is radially symmetric, real analytic in the radial variable and strictly positive on a disk around the origin in the complex plane with a discontinuous drop to zero at the edge. The radius of the disk is given explicitly in terms of the covariances of the entries of XX. We show convergence down to local spectral scales just slightly above the typical eigenvalue spacing with an optimal rate of convergence.

Quadratic vector equations on complex upper half-plane

We consider the nonlinear equation −1m=z+Sm-\frac{1}{m}=z+Sm with a parameter zz in the complex upper half plane H\mathbb{H} , where SS is a positivity preserving symmetric linear operator acting on bounded functions. The solution with values in H \mathbb{H} is unique and its zz-dependence is conveniently described as the Stieltjes transforms of a family of measures vv on R\mathbb{R}. In [AEK17a] we qualitatively identified the possible singular behaviors of vv: under suitable conditions on SS we showed that in the density of vv only algebraic singularities of degree two or three may occur. In this paper we give a comprehensive analysis of these singularities with uniform quantitative controls. We also find a universal shape describing the transition regime between the square root and cubic root singularities. Finally, motivated by random matrix applications in the companion paper [AEK16b], we present a complete stability analysis of the equation for any z∈Hz\in \mathbb{H}, including the vicinity of the singularities.

Random Matrices with Slow Correlation Decay

We consider large random matrices with a general slowly decaying correlation among its entries. We prove universality of the local eigenvalue statistics and optimal local laws for the resolvent away from the spectral edges, generalizing the recent result of [arXiv:1604.08188] to allow slow correlation decay and arbitrary expectation. The main novel tool is a systematic diagrammatic control of a multivariate cumulant expansion.

Coexistence and Survival in Conservative Lotka-Volterra Networks

Analyzing coexistence and survival scenarios of Lotka-Volterra (LV) networks in which the total biomass is conserved is of vital importance for the characterization of long-term dynamics of ecological communities. Here, we introduce a classification scheme for coexistence scenarios in these conservative LV models and quantify the extinction process by employing the Pfaffian of the network's interaction matrix. We illustrate our findings on global stability properties for general systems of four and five species and find a generalized scaling law for the extinction time.

Local semicircle law with imprimitive variance matrix

We extend the proof of the local semicircle law for generalized Wigner matrices given in [4] to the case when the matrix of variances has an eigenvalue −1 -1 . In particular, this result provides a short proof of the optimal local Marchenko-Pastur law at the hard edge (i.e. around zero) for sample covariance matrices X∗X \boldsymbol{\mathrm{X}}^\ast \boldsymbol{\mathrm{X}} , where the variances of the entries of X \boldsymbol{\mathrm{X}} may vary.
