Inhomogeneous Circular Law for Correlated Matrices

We consider non-Hermitian random matrices $X \in \mathbb{C}^{n \times n}$ with general decaying correlations between their entries. For large $n$, the empirical spectral distribution is well approximated by a deterministic density, expressed in terms of the solution to a system of two coupled non-linear $n \times n$ matrix equations. This density is interpreted as the Brown measure of a linear combination of free circular elements with matrix coefficients on a non-commutative probability space. It is radially symmetric, real analytic in the radial variable and strictly positive on a disk around the origin in the complex plane with a discontinuous drop to zero at the edge. The radius of the disk is given explicitly in terms of the covariances of the entries of $X$. We show convergence down to local spectral scales just slightly above the typical eigenvalue spacing with an optimal rate of convergence.

Local elliptic law

The empirical eigenvalue distribution of the elliptic random matrix ensemble tends to the uniform measure on an ellipse in the complex plane as its dimension tends to infinity. We show this convergence on all mesoscopic scales slightly above the typical eigenvalue spacing in the bulk spectrum with an optimal convergence rate. As a corollary we obtain complete delocalisation for the corresponding eigenvectors in any basis.

Extremal eigenvalues of critical Erdős-Rényi graphs

We complete the analysis of the extremal eigenvalues of the the adjacency matrix $A$ of the Erdős-Rényi graph $G(N,d/N)$ in the critical regime $d \asymp \log N$ of the transition uncovered in [arXiv:1704.02953,arXiv:1704.02945], where the regimes $d \gg \log N$ and $d \ll \log N$ were studied. We establish a one-to-one correspondence between vertices of degree at least $2d$ and nontrivial (excluding the trivial top eigenvalue) eigenvalues of $A / \sqrt{d}$ outside of the asymptotic bulk $[-2,2]$. This correspondence implies that the transition characterized by the appearance of the eigenvalues outside of the asymptotic bulk takes place at the critical value $d = d_* = \frac{1}{\log 4 - 1} \log N$. For $d < d_*$ we obtain rigidity bounds on the locations of all eigenvalues outside the interval $[-2,2]$, and for $d > d_*$ we show that no such eigenvalues exist. All of our estimates are quantitative with polynomial error probabilities. Our proof is based on a tridiagonal representation of the adjacency matrix and on a detailed analysis of the geometry of the neighbourhood of the large degree vertices. An important ingredient in our estimates is a matrix inequality obtained via the associated nonbacktracking matrix and an Ihara-Bass formula [arXiv:1704.02945]. Our argument also applies to sparse Wigner matrices, defined as the Hadamard product of $A$ and a Wigner matrix, in which case the role of the degrees is replaced by the squares of the $\ell^2$-norms of the rows.

Correlated Random Matrices: Band Rigidity and Edge Universality

We prove edge universality for a general class of correlated real symmetric or complex Hermitian Wigner matrices with arbitrary expectation. Our theorem also applies to internal edges of the self-consistent density of states. In particular, we establish a strong form of band rigidity which excludes mismatches between location and label of eigenvalues close to internal edges in these general models.

The Local Semicircle Law for Random Matrices with a Fourfold Symmetry

We consider real symmetric and complex Hermitian random matrices with the additional symmetry $h_{xy}=h_{N-x,N-y}$. The matrix elements are independent (up to the fourfold symmetry) and not necessarily identically distributed. This ensemble naturally arises as the Fourier transform of a Gaussian orthogonal ensemble (GOE). It also occurs as the flip matrix model - an approximation of the two-dimensional Anderson model at small disorder. We show that the density of states converges to the Wigner semicircle law despite the new symmetry type. We also prove the local version of the semicircle law on the optimal scale.
