NbIr$_2$B$_2$ and TaIr$_2$B$_2$ -- new low symmetry noncentrosymmetric superconductors with strong spin orbit coupling

Superconductivity was first observed more than a century ago, but the search for new superconducting materials remains a challenge. The Cooper pairs in superconductors are ideal embodiments of quantum entanglement. Thus, novel superconductors can be critical for both learning about electronic systems in condensed matter and for possible application in future quantum technologies. Here two previously unreported materials, NbIr$_2$B$_2$ and TaIr$_2$B$_2$, are presented with superconducting transitions at 7.2 and 5.2 K, respectively. They display a unique noncentrosymmetric crystal structure, and for both compounds the magnetic field that destroys the superconductivity at 0 K exceeds one of the fundamental characteristics of conventional superconductors (the Pauli limit), suggesting that the superconductivity may be unconventional. Supporting this experimentally based deduction, first-principle calculations show a spin split Fermi surface due to the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling. These materials may thus provide an excellent platform for the study of non-BCS superconductivity in intermetallic compounds.

Polytypism and Superconductivity in the NbS$_2$ System

We report on the phase formation and the superconducting properties in the NbS$_2$ system. Specifically, we have performed a series of standardized solid-state syntheses in this system, which allow us to establish a comprehensive synthesis map for the formation of the two polytypes 2H-NbS$_2$ and 3R-NbS$_2$, respectively. We show that the identification of two polytypes by means of X-ray diffraction is not always unambiguous. Our physical property measurements on a phase-pure sample of 3R-NbS$_2$, on a phase-pure sample of 2H-NbS$_2$, and a mixed phase sample confirm earlier reports that 2H-NbS$_2$ is a bulk superconductor and that 3R-NbS$_2$ is not a superconductor above $T =$ 1.75 K. Our results clearly show that specific heat measurements, as true bulk measurements, are crucial for the identification of superconducting materials in this and related systems. Our results indicate that for the investigation of van-der-Waals materials great care has to be taken on choosing the synthesis conditions for obtaining phase pure samples.

Superconductivity in Metal-Rich Chalcogenide Ta2Se

The metal-metal bond in metal-rich chalcogenide is known to exhibit various structures and dominate interesting physical properties. Ta2Se can be obtained by both arc-melting and solid-state pellet methods. Ta2Se crystallizes a layered tetragonal structure with space group P4/nmm (S.G.129, Pearson symbol tP6). Each unit cell consists of four layers of body-centered closed packing Ta atoms sandwiched between two square nets of Se atoms, forming the Se-Ta-Ta-Ta-Ta-Se networks. A combined result of magnetic susceptibility, resistivity, and heat capacity measurements on Ta2Se indicate the bulk superconductivity with Tc = 3.8 (1) K. According to the first-principal calculations, the d orbitals in Ta atoms dominate the Fermi level in Ta2Se. The flat bands at gamma-point in the Brillouin zone (BZ) yield to the van Hove singularities in density of states (DOS) around the Fermi level, which is intensified by introducing spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effect, thus, could be critical for the superconductivity in Ta2Se. The physical properties especially superconductivity is completely different from Ta-rich alloys or transition metal dichalcogenide TaSe2.

Iridium 5$\textit{d}$-electron driven superconductivity in ThIr$_3$

Polycrystalline sample of superconducting ThIr$_{3}$ was obtained by arc-melting Th and Ir metals. Powder x-ray diffraction revealed that the compound crystalizes in a rhombohedral crystal structure (R-3m, s.g. no. 166) with the lattice parameters: a = 5.3394(1) $Å$ and c = 26.4228(8) $Å$. Normal and superconducting states were studied by magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity and heat capacity measurements. The results showed that ThIr$_{3}$ is a type II superconductor (Ginzburg-Landau parameter $κ$ = 38) with the critical temperature T$_{c}$ = 4.41 K. The heat capacity data yielded the Sommerfeld coefficient $γ$ = 17.6 mJ mol$^{-1}$ K$^{-2}$ and the Debye temperature $Θ_{D}$ = 169 K. The ratio $Δ$C / ($γ$ T$_{c}$) = 1.6, where $Δ$C stands for the specific heat jump at T$_{c}$, and the electron-phonon coupling constant $λ_{e-p}$ = 0.74 suggest that ThIr$_{3}$ is a moderate-strength superconductor. The experimental studies were supplemented by band structure calculations, which indicated that the superconductivity in ThIr$_{3}$ is governed mainly by 5d states of iridium. The significantly smaller band-structure value of Sommerfeld coefficient as well as the experimentally observed quadratic temperature dependence of resistivity and enhanced magnetic susceptibility suggest presence of electronic interactions in the system, which compete with superconductivity.

Crystal structure and low-energy Einstein mode in ErV$_2$Al$_{20}$ intermetallic cage compound

Single crystals of a new ternary aluminide ErV$_2$Al$_{20}$ were grown using a self-flux method. The crystal structure was determined by powder X-ray diffraction measurements and Rietveld refinement, and physical properties were studied by means of electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements. These measurements reveal that ErV$_2$Al$_{20}$ is a Curie-Weiss paramagnet down to 1.95 K with an effective magnetic moment $μ_{eff}$ = 9.27(1) $μ_B$ and Curie-Weiss temperature $Θ_{CW}$ = -0.55(4) K. The heat capacity measurements show a broad anomaly at low temperatures that is attributed to the presence of a low-energy Einstein mode with characteristic temperature $Θ_E$ = 44 K, approximately twice as high as in the isostructural 'Einstein solid' VAl$_{10.1}$.

Effect of Electron Count and Chemical Complexity in the Ta-Nb-Hf-Zr-Ti High-Entropy Alloy Superconductor

High-entropy alloys are made from random mixtures of principal elements on simple lattices, stabilized by a high mixing entropy. The recently discovered BCC Ta-Nb-Hf-Zr-Ti high entropy alloy superconductor appears to display properties of both simple crystalline intermetallics and amorphous materials, e.g. it has a well defined superconducting transition along with an exceptional robustness against disorder. Here we show that the valence-electron count dependence of the superconducting transition temperature in the high entropy alloy falls between those of analogous simple solid solutions and amorphous materials, and test the effect of alloy complexity on the superconductivity. We propose high-entropy alloys as excellent intermediate systems for studying superconductivity as it evolves between crystalline and amorphous materials.

Field induced suppression of charge density wave in GdNiC$_2$

We report the specific heat, magnetic, magnetotransport and galvanomagnetic properties of polycrystalline GdNiC$_2$. In the intermediate temperature region above $T_N$ = 20 K, we observe large negative magnetoresistance due to Zeeman splitting of the electronic bands and partial destruction of a charge density wave ground state. Our magnetoresistance and Hall measurements show that at low temperatures a magnetic field induced transformation from antiferromagnetic order to a metamagnetic phase results in the partial suppression of the CDW.

Rattling enhanced superconductivity in MV$_2$Al$_{20}$ (M = Sc, Lu, Y) intermetallic cage compounds

Polycrystalline samples of four intermetallic compounds: MV$_2$Al$_{20}$ (M = Sc, Y, La, and Lu) were synthesized using an arc-melting technique. The crystal structures were analyzed by means of powder x-ray diffraction and Rietveld analysis, and the physical properties were studied by means of heat capacity, electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements down to 0.4 K. For ScV$_2$Al$_{20}$, LuV$_2$Al$_{20}$, and YV$_2$Al$_{20}$, superconductivity was observed with critical temperatures T$_c$ = 1.00 K, 0.57 K, and 0.60 K, respectively. Superconductivity for the Lu compound is reported for the first time. Theoretical calculations of the electronic and phonon structures were conducted in order to analyze the superconductivity and dynamics in ScV$_2$Al$_{20}$, YV$_2$Al$_{20}$, and LuV$_2$Al$_{20}$ and to explain the lack of a superconducting transition in LaV$_2$Al$_{20}$ down to 0.4 K. The results of the experimental and theoretical studies show that all the compounds are weakly-coupled type II BCS superconductors, and reveal the importance of the M-atom anharmonic "rattling" modes for the superconductivity in these materials, which seem to enhance T$_c$, especially for ScV$_2$Al$_{20}$.

Superconductivity in CaBi$_{2}$

Superconductivity is observed with critical temperature $T_{c}$ = 2.0 K in self-flux-grown single crystals of $CaBi_{2}$. This material adopts the $ZrSi_{2}$ structure type with lattice parameters a = 4.696(1) $Å$, b = 7.081(2) $Å$ and c = 4.611(1) $Å$. The crystals of $CaBi_{2}$ were studied by means of magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and electrical resistivity measurements. The heat capacity jump at $T_{c}$ is $ΔC/γT_{c}$ = 1.41, confirming bulk superconductivity; the Sommerfeld coefficient $γ$ = 4.1 $mJ\: mol^{-1}\, K^{-2}$ and the Debye temperature $Θ_{D}$ = 157 K. The electron-phonon coupling strength is $λ_{el-ph}$ = 0.59, and the thermodynamic critical field $H_{c}$ is low, between 111 and 124 Oe $CaBi_{2}$ is a moderate coupling type-I superconductor. Results of electronic structure calculations are reported and charge densities, electronic bands, densities of states and Fermi surfaces are discussed, focusing on the effects of spin\textendash orbit coupling and electronic property anisotropy. We find a mixed quasi-2D + 3D character in the electronic structure, which reflects the layered crystal structure of the material.

A large new family of filled skutterudites stabilized by electron count

Based on the interplay of theory and experiment, a large new family of filled group 9 (Co, Rh and Ir) skutterudites is designed and synthesized. The new materials fill the empty cages in the structures of the known binary CoSb3, RhSb3 and IrSb3 skutterudites with alkaline, alkaline earth, and rare earth atoms to create compounds of the type AyB4X12; A atoms fill the cages to a fraction y, B are the group 9 transition metals, and X is a mixture of electronegative main group elements chosen to achieve chemical stability by adjusting the electron counts to electron-precise values. Forty-three new compounds are reported, antimony-tin and phosphorous-silicon based, with 63 compositional variations presented. The new family of compounds is large and general. The results described here can be extended to the synthesis of hundreds of new group 9 filled skutterudites.

Unusual Behaviour of (Np,Pu)B2C

Two transuranium metal boron carbides, NpB2C and PuB2C have been synthesized by argon arc melting. The crystal structures of the {Np,Pu}B2C compounds were determined from single crystal X-ray data to be isotypic with the ThB2C-type (space group R3m, a = 0.6532(2) nm; c = 1.0769(3) nm for NpB2C and a = 0.6509(2) nm; c = 1.0818(3) nm for PuB2C; Z=9). Physical properties have been derived from polycrystalline bulk material in the temperature range from 2 K to 300 K and in magnetic fields up to 9 T. Magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity data indicate the occurrence of antiferromagnetic ordering for NpB2C with a Neel temperature T_N = 68 K. PuB2C is a Pauli paramagnet most likely due to a strong hybridisation of s(p,d) electrons with the Pu-5f states. A pseudo-gap, as concluded from the Sommerfeld value and the electronic transport, is thought to be a consequence of the hybridisation. The magnetic behaviour of {Np,Pu}B2C is consistent with the criterion of Hill.

Synthesis, single crystal growth and properties of $Sr_5Pb_3ZnO_{12}$

The novel $Sr_5Pb_3ZnO_{12}$ oxide was synthesized by the solid-state reaction method. The crystal structure was studied by means of the powder x-ray diffraction Rietveld method and was found to be similar to 3 other previously known $Sr_5Pb_3MO_{12}$ compounds (M = Co, Ni, Cu). Crystals of several hundred microns in size of the new phase were grown in molten sodium chloride and imaged using confocal optical and scanning electron microscopy. Electrical properties were studied using the impedance spectroscopy technique. It was found that $Sr_5Pb_3ZnO_{12}$ is a dielectric material with rather high relative permittivity ($ε_r$ = 22 at 300K) and with activation energy of the dielectric relaxation process $E_A$ = 0.80(4) eV. The heat capacity studies reveal the Debye temperature $Θ_D$ = 324(1) K.

A Non-Centrosymmetric Superconductor with a Bulk 3D Dirac Cone Gapped by Strong Spin Orbit Coupling

Layered, non-centrosymmetric, heavy element PbTaSe2 is found to be superconducting. We report its electronic properties accompanied by electronic structure calculations. Specific heat, electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate that PbTaSe2 is a moderately coupled, type-II BCS superconductor (Tc = 3.72 K, Ginzburg-Landau parameter Kappa = 14) with an electronphonon coupling constant of Lambda_ep = 0.74. Electronic structure calculations reveal a single bulk 3D Dirac cone at the K point of the Brillouin Zone derived exclusively from its hexagonal Pb layer; it is similar to the feature found in graphene except there is a 0.8 eV gap opened by spin-orbit coupling. The combination of large spin-orbit coupling and lack of inversion symmetry also results in large Rashba splitting on the order of tenths of eV.

Superconductivity in the Cu(Ir1-xPtx)2Se4 Spinel

We report the observation of superconductivity in the CuIr2Se4 spinel induced by partial substitution of Pt for Ir. The optimal doping level for superconductivity in Cu(Ir1-xPtx)2Se4 is x = 0.2, where Tc is 1.76 K. A superconducting Tc vs. composition dome is established between the metallic, normal conductor CuIr2Se4 and semiconducting CuIrPtSe4. Electronic structure calculations show that the optimal Tc occurs near the electron count of a large peak in the calculated electronic density of states and that CuIrPtSe4 is a band-filled insulator. Characterization of the superconducting state in this heavy metal spinel through determination of ΔC/γTc, indicates that it is BCS-like. The relatively high upper critical field at the optimal superconducting composition (Hc2(0) = 3.2 T) is much larger than that reported for analogous rhodium spinels and is comparable to or exceeds the Pauli field (mu0Hp), suggesting that strong spin orbit coupling may influence the superconducting state. Further, comparison to doped CuIr2S4 suggests that superconductivity in iridium spinels is not necessarily associated with the destabilization of a charge-ordered spin-paired state through doping.
