Iridium 5$\textit{d}$-electron driven superconductivity in ThIr$_3$

Polycrystalline sample of superconducting ThIr$_{3}$ was obtained by arc-melting Th and Ir metals. Powder x-ray diffraction revealed that the compound crystalizes in a rhombohedral crystal structure (R-3m, s.g. no. 166) with the lattice parameters: a = 5.3394(1) $Å$ and c = 26.4228(8) $Å$. Normal and superconducting states were studied by magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity and heat capacity measurements. The results showed that ThIr$_{3}$ is a type II superconductor (Ginzburg-Landau parameter $κ$ = 38) with the critical temperature T$_{c}$ = 4.41 K. The heat capacity data yielded the Sommerfeld coefficient $γ$ = 17.6 mJ mol$^{-1}$ K$^{-2}$ and the Debye temperature $Θ_{D}$ = 169 K. The ratio $Δ$C / ($γ$ T$_{c}$) = 1.6, where $Δ$C stands for the specific heat jump at T$_{c}$, and the electron-phonon coupling constant $λ_{e-p}$ = 0.74 suggest that ThIr$_{3}$ is a moderate-strength superconductor. The experimental studies were supplemented by band structure calculations, which indicated that the superconductivity in ThIr$_{3}$ is governed mainly by 5d states of iridium. The significantly smaller band-structure value of Sommerfeld coefficient as well as the experimentally observed quadratic temperature dependence of resistivity and enhanced magnetic susceptibility suggest presence of electronic interactions in the system, which compete with superconductivity.

Crystal structure and low-energy Einstein mode in ErV$_2$Al$_{20}$ intermetallic cage compound

Single crystals of a new ternary aluminide ErV$_2$Al$_{20}$ were grown using a self-flux method. The crystal structure was determined by powder X-ray diffraction measurements and Rietveld refinement, and physical properties were studied by means of electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements. These measurements reveal that ErV$_2$Al$_{20}$ is a Curie-Weiss paramagnet down to 1.95 K with an effective magnetic moment $μ_{eff}$ = 9.27(1) $μ_B$ and Curie-Weiss temperature $Θ_{CW}$ = -0.55(4) K. The heat capacity measurements show a broad anomaly at low temperatures that is attributed to the presence of a low-energy Einstein mode with characteristic temperature $Θ_E$ = 44 K, approximately twice as high as in the isostructural 'Einstein solid' VAl$_{10.1}$.

Field induced suppression of charge density wave in GdNiC$_2$

We report the specific heat, magnetic, magnetotransport and galvanomagnetic properties of polycrystalline GdNiC$_2$. In the intermediate temperature region above $T_N$ = 20 K, we observe large negative magnetoresistance due to Zeeman splitting of the electronic bands and partial destruction of a charge density wave ground state. Our magnetoresistance and Hall measurements show that at low temperatures a magnetic field induced transformation from antiferromagnetic order to a metamagnetic phase results in the partial suppression of the CDW.

Rattling enhanced superconductivity in MV$_2$Al$_{20}$ (M = Sc, Lu, Y) intermetallic cage compounds

Polycrystalline samples of four intermetallic compounds: MV$_2$Al$_{20}$ (M = Sc, Y, La, and Lu) were synthesized using an arc-melting technique. The crystal structures were analyzed by means of powder x-ray diffraction and Rietveld analysis, and the physical properties were studied by means of heat capacity, electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements down to 0.4 K. For ScV$_2$Al$_{20}$, LuV$_2$Al$_{20}$, and YV$_2$Al$_{20}$, superconductivity was observed with critical temperatures T$_c$ = 1.00 K, 0.57 K, and 0.60 K, respectively. Superconductivity for the Lu compound is reported for the first time. Theoretical calculations of the electronic and phonon structures were conducted in order to analyze the superconductivity and dynamics in ScV$_2$Al$_{20}$, YV$_2$Al$_{20}$, and LuV$_2$Al$_{20}$ and to explain the lack of a superconducting transition in LaV$_2$Al$_{20}$ down to 0.4 K. The results of the experimental and theoretical studies show that all the compounds are weakly-coupled type II BCS superconductors, and reveal the importance of the M-atom anharmonic "rattling" modes for the superconductivity in these materials, which seem to enhance T$_c$, especially for ScV$_2$Al$_{20}$.

Superconductivity in CaBi$_{2}$

Superconductivity is observed with critical temperature $T_{c}$ = 2.0 K in self-flux-grown single crystals of $CaBi_{2}$. This material adopts the $ZrSi_{2}$ structure type with lattice parameters a = 4.696(1) $Å$, b = 7.081(2) $Å$ and c = 4.611(1) $Å$. The crystals of $CaBi_{2}$ were studied by means of magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and electrical resistivity measurements. The heat capacity jump at $T_{c}$ is $ΔC/γT_{c}$ = 1.41, confirming bulk superconductivity; the Sommerfeld coefficient $γ$ = 4.1 $mJ\: mol^{-1}\, K^{-2}$ and the Debye temperature $Θ_{D}$ = 157 K. The electron-phonon coupling strength is $λ_{el-ph}$ = 0.59, and the thermodynamic critical field $H_{c}$ is low, between 111 and 124 Oe $CaBi_{2}$ is a moderate coupling type-I superconductor. Results of electronic structure calculations are reported and charge densities, electronic bands, densities of states and Fermi surfaces are discussed, focusing on the effects of spin\textendash orbit coupling and electronic property anisotropy. We find a mixed quasi-2D + 3D character in the electronic structure, which reflects the layered crystal structure of the material.

Synthesis, single crystal growth and properties of $Sr_5Pb_3ZnO_{12}$

The novel $Sr_5Pb_3ZnO_{12}$ oxide was synthesized by the solid-state reaction method. The crystal structure was studied by means of the powder x-ray diffraction Rietveld method and was found to be similar to 3 other previously known $Sr_5Pb_3MO_{12}$ compounds (M = Co, Ni, Cu). Crystals of several hundred microns in size of the new phase were grown in molten sodium chloride and imaged using confocal optical and scanning electron microscopy. Electrical properties were studied using the impedance spectroscopy technique. It was found that $Sr_5Pb_3ZnO_{12}$ is a dielectric material with rather high relative permittivity ($ε_r$ = 22 at 300K) and with activation energy of the dielectric relaxation process $E_A$ = 0.80(4) eV. The heat capacity studies reveal the Debye temperature $Θ_D$ = 324(1) K.
