On resampling schemes for particle filters with weakly informative observations

We consider particle filters with weakly informative observations (or `potentials') relative to the latent state dynamics. The particular focus of this work is on particle filters to approximate time-discretisations of continuous-time Feynman--Kac path integral models -- a scenario that naturally arises when addressing filtering and smoothing problems in continuous time -- but our findings are indicative about weakly informative settings beyond this context too. We study the performance of different resampling schemes, such as systematic resampling, SSP (Srinivasan sampling process) and stratified resampling, as the time-discretisation becomes finer and also identify their continuous-time limit, which is expressed as a suitably defined `infinitesimal generator.' By contrasting these generators, we find that (certain modifications of) systematic and SSP resampling `dominate' stratified and independent `killing' resampling in terms of their limiting overall resampling rate. The reduced intensity of resampling manifests itself in lower variance in our numerical experiment. This efficiency result, through an ordering of the resampling rate, is new to the literature. The second major contribution of this work concerns the analysis of the limiting behaviour of the entire population of particles of the particle filter as the time discretisation becomes finer. We provide the first proof, under general conditions, that the particle approximation of the discretised continuous-time Feynman--Kac path integral models converges to a (uniformly weighted) continuous-time particle system.

Besov spaces via hyperbolic fillings

We establish a new characterization of the homogeneous Besov spaces $\dot{\mathcal B}^{s}_{p,q}(Z)$ with smoothness $s \in (0,1)$ in the setting of doubling metric measure spaces $(Z,d,μ)$. The characterization is given in terms of a hyperbolic filling of the metric space $(Z,d)$, a construction which has previously appeared in the context of other function spaces in [3,1,2]. We use the characterization to obtain results concerning the density of Lipschitz functions in the spaces $\dot{\mathcal B}^{s}_{p,q}(Z)$ and a general complex interpolation formula in the smoothness range $0 < s < 1$.

Traces of Besov, Triebel-Lizorkin and Sobolev spaces on metric spaces

We establish trace theorems for function spaces defined on general Ahlfors regular metric spaces $Z$. The results cover the Triebel-Lizorkin spaces and the Besov spaces for smoothness indices $s<1,$ as well as the first order Hajłasz-Sobolev space $M^{1,p}(Z)$. They generalize the classical results from the Euclidean setting, since the traces of these function spaces onto any closed Ahlfors regular subset $F \subset Z$ are Besov spaces defined intrinsically on $F$. Our method employs the definitions of the function spaces via hyperbolic fillings of the underlying metric space.

Triebel-Lizorkin spaces on metric spaces via hyperbolic fillings

We give a new characterization of (homogeneous) Triebel-Lizorkin spaces $\dot{\mathcal F}^{s}_{p,q}(Z)$ in the smoothness range $0 < s < 1$ for a fairly general class of metric measure spaces $Z$. The characterization uses Gromov hyperbolic fillings of $Z$. This gives a short proof of the quasisymmetric invariance of these spaces in case $Z$ is $Q$-Ahlfors regular and $sp = Q > 1$. We also obtain first results on complex interpolation for these spaces in the framework of doubling metric measure spaces.

Bounded compositions on scaling invariant Besov spaces

For $0 < s < 1 < q < \infty$, we characterize the homeomorphisms $φ: \real^n \to \real^n$ for which the composition operator $f \mapsto f \circ φ$ is bounded on the homogeneous, scaling invariant Besov space $\dot{B}^s_{n/s,q}(\real^n)$, where the emphasis is on the case $q\not=n/s$, left open in the previous literature. We also establish an analogous result for Besov-type function spaces on a wide class of metric measure spaces as well, and make some new remarks considering the scaling invariant Triebel-Lizorkin spaces $\dot{F}^s_{n/s,q}(\real^n)$ with $0 < s < 1$ and $0 < q \leq \infty$.

Pointwise and grand maximal function characterizations of Besov-type and Triebel-Lizorkin-type spaces

In this note, we establish characterizations for the homogeneous Besov-type spaces $\dot{B}^{s,τ}_{p,q}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ and Triebel-Lizorkin-type spaces $\dot{F}^{s,τ}_{p,q}(\mathbb{R}^n)$, introduced by Yang and Yuan, through fractional Hajłasz-type gradients for suitable values of the parameters $p$, $q$ and $τ$ when $0 < s < 1$, and through grand Littlewood-Paley-type maximal functions for all admissible values of the parameters. These characterizations extend the characterizations obtained by Koskela, Yang and Zhou for the standard homogeneous Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces.
