Random tree Besov priors -- Towards fractal imaging

We propose alternatives to Bayesian a priori distributions that are frequently used in the study of inverse problems. Our aim is to construct priors that have similar good edge-preserving properties as total variation or Mumford-Shah priors but correspond to well defined infinite-dimensional random variables, and can be approximated by finite-dimensional random variables. We introduce a new wavelet-based model, where the non zero coefficient are chosen in a systematic way so that prior draws have certain fractal behaviour. We show that realisations of this new prior take values in some Besov spaces and have singularities only on a small set $τ$ that has a certain Hausdorff dimension. We also introduce an efficient algorithm for calculating the MAP estimator, arising from the the new prior, in denoising problem.

Homogenization of iterated singular integrals with applications to random quasiconformal maps

We study homogenization of iterated randomized singular integrals and homeomorphic solutions to the Beltrami differential equation with a random Beltrami coefficient. More precisely, let $(F_j)_{j \geq 1}$ be a sequence of normalized homeomorphic solutions to the planar Beltrami equation $\overline{\partial} F_j (z)=μ_j(z,ω) \partial F_j(z),$ where the random dilatation satisfies $|μ_j|\leq k<1$ and has locally periodic statistics, for example of the type $$μ_j (z,ω)=ϕ(z)\sum_{n\in \mathbf{Z}^2}g(2^j z-n,X_{n}(ω)), $$ where $g(z,ω)$ decays rapidly in $z$, the random variables $X_{n}$ are i.i.d., and $ϕ\in C^\infty_0$. We establish the almost sure and local uniform convergence as $j\to\infty$ of the maps $F_j$ to a deterministic quasiconformal limit $F_\infty$. This result is obtained as an application of our main theorem, which deals with homogenization of iterated randomized singular integrals. As a special case of our theorem, let $T_1,\ldots , T_{m}$ be translation and dilation invariant singular integrals on ${\bf R}^d, $ and consider a $d$-dimensional version of $μ_j$, e.g., as defined above or within a more general setting. We then prove that there is a deterministic function $f$ such that almost surely as $j\to\infty$, $$ μ_j T_{m}μ_j\ldots T_1μ_j\to f \quad \textrm{weakly in } L^p,\quad 1 < p < \infty\ . $$

Local times and sample path properties of the Rosenblatt process

Let $Z = (Z_t)_{t \geq 0}$ be the Rosenblatt process with Hurst index $H \in (1/2, 1)$. We prove joint continuity for the local time of $Z$, and establish Hölder conditions for the local time. These results are then used to study the irregularity of the sample paths of $Z$. Based on analogy with similar known results in the case of fractional Brownian motion, we believe our results are sharp. A main ingredient of our proof is a rather delicate spectral analysis of arbitrary linear combinations of integral operators, which arise from the representation of the Rosenblatt process as an element in the second chaos.

Multiplicative chaos measures for a random model of the Riemann zeta function

We prove convergence of a stochastic approximation of powers of the Riemann $ζ$ function to a non-Gaussian multiplicative chaos measure, and prove that this measure is a non-trivial multifractal random measure. The results cover both the subcritical and critical chaos. A basic ingredient of the proof is a 'good' Gaussian approximation of the induced random fields that is potentially of independent interest.

Traces of Besov, Triebel-Lizorkin and Sobolev spaces on metric spaces

We establish trace theorems for function spaces defined on general Ahlfors regular metric spaces $Z$. The results cover the Triebel-Lizorkin spaces and the Besov spaces for smoothness indices $s<1,$ as well as the first order Hajłasz-Sobolev space $M^{1,p}(Z)$. They generalize the classical results from the Euclidean setting, since the traces of these function spaces onto any closed Ahlfors regular subset $F \subset Z$ are Besov spaces defined intrinsically on $F$. Our method employs the definitions of the function spaces via hyperbolic fillings of the underlying metric space.

Triebel-Lizorkin spaces on metric spaces via hyperbolic fillings

We give a new characterization of (homogeneous) Triebel-Lizorkin spaces $\dot{\mathcal F}^{s}_{p,q}(Z)$ in the smoothness range $0 < s < 1$ for a fairly general class of metric measure spaces $Z$. The characterization uses Gromov hyperbolic fillings of $Z$. This gives a short proof of the quasisymmetric invariance of these spaces in case $Z$ is $Q$-Ahlfors regular and $sp = Q > 1$. We also obtain first results on complex interpolation for these spaces in the framework of doubling metric measure spaces.

Basic properties of critical lognormal multiplicative chaos

We study one-dimensional exact scaling lognormal multiplicative chaos measures at criticality. Our main results are the determination of the exact asymptotics of the right tail of the distribution of the total mass of the measure, and an almost sure upper bound for the modulus of continuity of the cumulative distribution function of the measure. We also find an almost sure lower bound for the increments of the measure almost everywhere with respect to the measure itself, strong enough to show that the measure is supported on a set of Hausdorff dimension $0$.

Bounded compositions on scaling invariant Besov spaces

For $0 < s < 1 < q < \infty$, we characterize the homeomorphisms $φ: \real^n \to \real^n$ for which the composition operator $f \mapsto f \circ φ$ is bounded on the homogeneous, scaling invariant Besov space $\dot{B}^s_{n/s,q}(\real^n)$, where the emphasis is on the case $q\not=n/s$, left open in the previous literature. We also establish an analogous result for Besov-type function spaces on a wide class of metric measure spaces as well, and make some new remarks considering the scaling invariant Triebel-Lizorkin spaces $\dot{F}^s_{n/s,q}(\real^n)$ with $0 < s < 1$ and $0 < q \leq \infty$.

The uniqueness of the Gaussian multiplicative chaos revisited

We consider Gaussian multiplicative chaos measures defined in a general setting of metric measure spaces. Uniqueness results are obtained, verifying that different sequences of approximating Gaussian fields lead to the same chaos measure. Specialized to Euclidean spaces, our setup covers both the subcritical chaos and the critical chaos, actually extending to all non-atomic Gaussian chaos measures.

A hunt for sharp $L ^p$-estimates and rank-one convex variational integrals

Learning how to figure out sharp $L^p$-estimates of nonlinear differential expressions, to prove and use them, is a fundamental part of the development of PDEs and Geometric Function Theory (GFT). Our survey presents, among what is known to date, some notable recent efforts and novelties made in this direction. We focus attention here on the historic Morrey's Conjecture and Burkholder's martingale inequalities for stochastic integrals. Some of these topics have already been discussed by the present authors [5] and by Rodrigo Bañuelos [10]. Nevertheless, there is always something new to add.

Quasiconformal maps with controlled Laplacian

We establish that every $K$-quasiconformal mapping of $w$ of the unit disk $\ID$ onto a $C^2$-Jordan domain $Ω$ is Lipschitz provided that $Δw\in L^p(\ID)$ for some $p>2$. We also prove that if in this situation $K\to 1$ with $\|Δw\|_{L^p(\ID)}\to 0$, and $Ω\to \ID$ in $C^{1,α}$-sense with $α>1/2,$ then the bound for the Lipschitz constant tends to $1$. In addition, we provide a quasiconformal analogue of the Smirnov absolute continuity result over the boundary.

Bilipschitz and quasiconformal rotation, stretching and multifractal spectra

We establish sharp bounds for simultaneous local rotation and Hölder-distortion of planar quasiconformal maps. In addition, we give sharp estimates for the corresponding joint quasiconformal multifractal spectrum, based on new estimates for Burkholder functionals with complex parameters. As a consequence, we obtain optimal rotation estimates also for bi-Lipschitz maps.

Critical Mandelbrot Cascades

We study Mandelbrot's multiplicative cascade measures at the critical temperature. As has been recently shown by Barral, Rhodes and Vargas (arXiv:1203.5445), an appropriately normalized sequence of cascade measures converges weakly in probability to a nontrivial limit measure. We prove that these limit measures have no atoms and give bounds for the modulus of continuity of the cumulative distribution of the measure. Using the earlier work of Barral and Seuret (2007), we compute the multifractal spectrum of the measures. We also extend the result of Benjamini and Schramm (2009), in which the KPZ formula from quantum gravity is validated for the high temperature cascade measures, to the critical and low temperature cases.

Harnack's inequality for p-harmonic functions via stochastic games

We give a proof of Lipschitz continuity of p-harmonious functions, that are tug-of-war game analogies of ordinary p-harmonic functions. This result is used to obtain a new proof of Harnack's inequality for p-harmonic functions in the case $p>2$ that avoids classical techniques like Moser iteration, but instead relies on suitable choices of strategies for the stochastic tug-of-war game.

Optimal growth of frequently hypercyclic entire functions

We solve a problem posed by A. Bonilla and K.-G. Grosse-Erdmann by constructing an entire function $f$ that is frequently hypercyclic with respect to the differentiation operator, and satisfies $M_f(r)\leq\displaystyle ce^r r^{-1/4}$, where $c>0$ be chosen arbirarily small. The obtained growth rate is sharp. We also obtain optimal results for the growth when measured in terms of average $L^p$-norms. Among other things, the proof applies Rudin-Shapiro polynomials and heat kernel estimates.

Burkholder integrals, Morrey's problem and quasiconformal mappings

Inspired by Morrey's Problem (on rank-one convex functionals) and the Burkholder integrals (of his martingale theory) we find that the Burkholder functionals $B_p$, $p \ge 2$, are quasiconcave, when tested on deformations of identity $f\in Id + C^\infty_0(Ω)$ with $B_p(Df(x)) \ge 0$ pointwise, or equivalently, deformations such that $|Df|^2 \leq \frac{p}{p-2} J_f$. In particular, this holds in explicit neighbourhoods of the identity map. Among the many immediate consequences, this gives the strongest possible $L^p$- estimates for the gradient of a principal solution to the Beltrami equation $\f_{\bar{z}} = μ(z) f_z$, for any $p$ in the critical interval $2 \leq p \leq 1+1/\|μ_f\|_\infty$. Examples of local maxima lacking symmetry manifest the intricate nature of the problem.

Compact and weakly compact composition operators on BMOA

We show that a composition operator induced by an analytic self-map of the unit disc in the complex plane is weakly compact on the space BMOA precisely when the operator is compact on BMOA. As a crucial step we simplify the compactness criterion due to Smith for composition operators on BMOA and show that his condition on the Nevanlinna counting function alone characterizes compactness. In addition, other equivalent compactness criteria are established for composition operators on both BMOA and its subspace VMOA.

On the ergodicity of the adaptive Metropolis algorithm on unbounded domains

This paper describes sufficient conditions to ensure the correct ergodicity of the Adaptive Metropolis (AM) algorithm of Haario, Saksman and Tamminen [Bernoulli 7 (2001) 223--242] for target distributions with a noncompact support. The conditions ensuring a strong law of large numbers require that the tails of the target density decay super-exponentially and have regular contours. The result is based on the ergodicity of an auxiliary process that is sequentially constrained to feasible adaptation sets, independent estimates of the growth rate of the AM chain and the corresponding geometric drift constants. The ergodicity result of the constrained process is obtained through a modification of the approach due to Andrieu and Moulines [Ann. Appl. Probab. 16 (2006) 1462--1505].

Integral means and boundary limits of Dirichlet series

We study the boundary behavior of functions in the Hardy spaces HD^p for ordinary Dirichlet series. Our main result, answering a question of H. Hedenmalm, shows that the classical F. Carlson theorem on integral means does not extend to the imaginary axis for functions in HD^\infty, i.e., for ordinary Dirichlet series in H^\infty of the right half-plane. We discuss an important embedding problem for HD^p, the solution of which is only known when p is an even integer. Viewing HD^p as Hardy spaces of the infinite-dimensional polydisc, we also present analogues of Fatou's theorem.

Representing non-weakly compact operators

For each $S \in L(E)$ (with $E$ a Banach space) the operator $R(S) \in L(E^{**}/E)$ is defined by $R(S)(x^{**}+E) = S^{**}x^{**}+E$ \quad ($x^{**}\in E^{**}$). We study mapping properties of the correspondence $S\to R(S),$ which provides a representation $R$ of the weak Calkin algebra $L(E)/W(E)$ (here $W(E)$ denotes the weakly compact operators on $E$). Our results display strongly varying behaviour of $R.$ For instance, there are no non--zero compact operators in Im$(R)$ in the case of $L^1$ and $C(0,1),$ but $R(L(E)/W(E))$ identifies isometrically with the class of lattice regular operators on $\ell^2$ for $E=\ell^2(J)$ (here $J$ is the James' space). Accordingly, there is an operator $T \in L(\ell^2(J))$ such that $R(T)$ is invertible but $T$ fails to be invertible modulo $W(\ell^2(J)).$
