MedDialogRubrics: A Comprehensive Benchmark and Evaluation Framework for Multi-turn Medical Consultations in Large Language Models

Medical conversational AI (AI) plays a pivotal role in the development of safer and more effective medical dialogue systems. However, existing benchmarks and evaluation frameworks for assessing the information-gathering and diagnostic reasoning abilities of medical large language models (LLMs) have not been rigorously evaluated. To address these gaps, we present MedDialogRubrics, a novel benchmark comprising 5,200 synthetically constructed patient cases and over 60,000 fine-grained evaluation rubrics generated by LLMs and subsequently refined by clinical experts, specifically designed to assess the multi-turn diagnostic capabilities of LLM. Our framework employs a multi-agent system to synthesize realistic patient records and chief complaints from underlying disease knowledge without accessing real-world electronic health records, thereby mitigating privacy and data-governance concerns. We design a robust Patient Agent that is limited to a set of atomic medical facts and augmented with a dynamic guidance mechanism that continuously detects and corrects hallucinations throughout the dialogue, ensuring internal coherence and clinical plausibility of the simulated cases. Furthermore, we propose a structured LLM-based and expert-annotated rubric-generation pipeline that retrieves Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) guidelines and utilizes the reject sampling to derive a prioritized set of rubric items ("must-ask" items) for each case. We perform a comprehensive evaluation of state-of-the-art models and demonstrate that, across multiple assessment dimensions, current models face substantial challenges. Our results indicate that improving medical dialogue will require advances in dialogue management architectures, not just incremental tuning of the base-model.

The extremal process of super-Brownian motion: a probabilistic approach via skeletons

Recently Ren et al. [Stoch. Proc. Appl., 137 (2021)] have proved that the extremal process of the super-Brownian motion converges in distribution in the limit of large times. Their techniques rely heavily on the study of the convergence of solutions to the Kolmogorov-Petrovsky-Piscounov equation along the lines of [M. Bramson, Mem. Amer. Math. Soc., 44 (1983)]. In this paper we take a different approach. Our approach is based on the skeleton decomposition of super-Brownian motion. The skeleton may be interpreted as immortal particles that determine the large time behaviour of the process. We exploit this fact and carry asymptotic properties from the skeleton over to the super-Brownian motion. Some new results concerning the probabilistic representations of the limiting process are obtained, which cannot be directly obtained through the results of [Y.-X. Ren et al., Stoch. Proc. Appl., 137 (2021)]. Apart from the results, our approach offers insights into the driving force behind the limiting process for super-Brownian motions.

Spine decomposition and $L\log L$ criterion for superprocesses with non-local branching mechanisms

In this paper, we provide a pathwise spine decomposition for superprocesses with both local and non-local branching mechanisms under a martingale change of measure. This result complements the related results obtained in Evans (1993), Kyprianou et al. (2012) and Liu, Ren and Song (2009) for superprocesses with purely local branching mechanisms and in Chen, Ren and Song (2016) and Kyprianou and Palau (2016) for multitype superprocesses. As an application of this decomposition, we obtain necessary/sufficient conditions for the limit of the fundamental martingale to be non-degenerate. In particular, we obtain extinction properties of superprocesses with non-local branching mechanisms as well as a Kesten-Stigum $L\log L$ theorem for the fundamental martingale.

Boundary Harnack principle and gradient estimates for fractional Laplacian perturbed by non-local operators

Suppose $d\ge 2$ and $0<β<α<2$. We consider the non-local operator $\mathcal{L}^{b}=Δ^{α/2}+\mathcal{S}^{b}$, where $$\mathcal{S}^{b}f(x):=\lim_{\varepsilon\to 0}\mathcal{A}(d,-β)\int_{|z|>\varepsilon}\left(f(x+z)-f(x)\right)\frac{b(x,z)}{|z|^{d+β}}\,dy.$$ Here $b(x,z)$ is a bounded measurable function on $\mathbb{R}^{d}\times\mathbb{R}^{d}$ that is symmetric in $z$, and $\mathcal{A}(d,-β)$ is a normalizing constant so that when $b(x, z)\equiv 1$, $\mathcal{S}^{b}$ becomes the fractional Laplacian $Δ^{β/2}:=-(-Δ)^{β/2}$. In other words, $$\mathcal{L}^{b}f(x):=\lim_{\varepsilon\to 0}\mathcal{A}(d,-β)\int_{|z|>\varepsilon}\left(f(x+z)-f(x)\right) j^b(x, z)\,dz,$$ where $j^b(x, z):= \mathcal{A}(d,-α) |z|^{-(d+α)}+ \mathcal{A}(d,-β) b(x, z)|z|^{-(d+β)}$. It is recently established in Chen and Wang [arXiv:1312.7594 [math.PR]] that, when $j^b(x, z)\geq 0$ on $\mathbb{R}^d\times \mathbb{R}^d$, there is a conservative Feller process $X^{b}$ having $\mathcal{L}^b$ as its infinitesimal generator. In this paper we establish, under certain conditions on $b$, a uniform boundary Harnack principle for harmonic functions of $X^b$ (or equivalently, of $\mathcal{L}^b$) in any $κ$-fat open set. We further establish uniform gradient estimates for non-negative harmonic functions of $X^{b}$ in open sets.

Law of large numbers for branching symmetric Hunt processes with measure-valued branching rates

We establish weak and strong law of large numbers for a class of branching symmetric Hunt processes with the branching rate being a smooth measure with respect to the underlying Hunt process, and the branching mechanism being general and state-dependent. Our work is motivated by recent work on strong law of large numbers for branching symmetric Markov processes by Chen-Shiozawa [J. Funct. Anal., 250, 374--399, 2007] and for branching diffusions by Engländer-Harris-Kyprianou [Ann. Inst. Henri Poincaré Probab. Stat., 46, 279--298, 2010]. Our results can be applied to some interesting examples that are covered by neither of these papers.

Dirichlet heat kernel estimates for fractional Laplacian under non-local perturbation

For $d\ge 2$ and $0<β<α<2$, consider a family of non-local operators $\mathcal{L}^{b}=Δ^{α/2}+\mathcal{S}^{b}$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$, where $$ \mathcal{S}^{b}f(x):=\lim_{\varepsilon\to 0}\mathcal{A}(d,-β)\int_{ \{z\in \mathbb{R}^d: |z|>\varepsilon\}} (f(x+z)-f(x))\frac{b(x,z)}{|z|^{d+β}}\,dz, $$ and $b(x,z)$ is a bounded measurable function on $\mathbb{R}^{d}\times\mathbb{R}^{d}$ with $b(x,z)=b(x,-z)$ for every $x,z\in\mathbb{R}^{d}$. Here ${\cal A}(d, -β)$ is a normalizing constant so that $\mathcal{S}^b=-(-Δ)^{β/2}$ when $b(x, z)\equiv 1$. It was recently shown in Chen and Wang [arXiv:1312.7594 [math.PR]] that when $b(x, z) \geq -\frac{\mathcal{A}(d, -α)} {\mathcal{A}(d, -β)}\, |z|^{β-α}$, then $\mathcal{L}^b$ admits a unique fundamental solution $p^b(t, x, y)$ which is strictly positive and continuous. The kernel $p^b(t, x, y)$ uniquely determines a conservative Feller process $X^b$, which has strong Feller property. The Feller process $X^b$ is also the unique solution to the martingale problem of $(\mathcal{L}^b, \mathcal{S}(\mathbb{R}^d))$, where $\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ denotes the space of tempered functions on $\mathbb{R}^d$. In this paper, we are concerned with the subprocess $X^{b,D}$ of $X^{b}$ killed upon leaving a bounded $C^{1,1}$ open set $D\subset \mathbb{R}^d$. We establish explicit sharp two-sided estimates for the transition density function of $X^{b, D}$.

Photonic analog computing with integrated silicon waveguides

The spectra of silicon integrated waveguides are tailored to process analog computing (i.e.,differential and integral) in optical domain with huge bandwidth. With the theory of signal and system, we design some silicon integrated devices to implement photonic differentiator and optical differential equation solver. The basic principle is to tailor the spectra of silicon integrated waveguides to meet the requirements of analog computing circuits. These analog photonic integrated circuits are very promising in future computing systems with high speed, low cost, and compact size. We also plan to employ these basic computing units in more complex computing modules.

Conditional limit theorems for critical continuous-state branching processes

In this paper we study the conditional limit theorems for critical continuous-state branching processes with branching mechanism $ψ(λ)=λ^{1+α}L(1/λ)$ where $α\in [0,1]$ and $L$ is slowly varying at $\infty$. We prove that if $α\in (0,1]$, there are norming constants $Q_{t}\to 0$ (as $t\uparrow +\infty$) such that for every $x>0$, $P_{x}\left(Q_{t}X_{t}\in\cdot|X_{t}>0\right)$ converges weakly to a non-degenerate limit. The converse assertion is also true provided the regularity of $ψ$ at 0. We give a conditional limit theorem for the case $α=0$. The limit theorems we obtain in this paper allow infinite variance of the branching process.

Experimental observation of optical differentiation and optical Hilbert transformation using a single SOI microdisk chip

Optical differentiation and optical Hilbert transformation play important roles in communications, computing, information processing and signal analysis in optical domain which offering huge bandwidth. Meanwhile, silicon-based photonic integrated circuits are preferable in all-optical signal processing due to their intrinsic advantages of low power consumption, compact footprint and ultra-high speed. In this study, we analyze the interrelation between first-order optical differentiation and optical Hilbert transformation and then experimentally demonstrate a feasible integrated scheme which can simultaneously function as first-order optical differentiation and optical Hilbert transformation based on a single microdisk resonator. This finding may motivate the development of integrated optical signal processors.
