Soliton resolution for critical co-rotational wave maps and radial cubic wave equation

In this paper we prove the soliton resolution conjecture for all times, for all solutions in the energy space, of the co-rotational wave map equation. To our knowledge this is the first such result for all initial data in the energy space for a wave-type equation. We also prove the corresponding results for radial solutions, which remain bounded in the energy norm, of the cubic (energy-critical) nonlinear wave equation in space dimension 4.

Exterior energy bounds for the critical wave equation close to the ground state

By definition, the exterior asymptotic energy of a solution to a wave equation on $\mathbb{R}^{1+N}$ is the sum of the limits as $t\to \pm\infty$ of the energy in the the exterior $\{|x|>|t|\}$ of the wave cone. In our previous work (JEMS 2012, arXiv:1003.0625), we have proved that the exterior asymptotic energy of a solution of the linear wave equation in odd space dimension $N$ is bounded from below by the conserved energy of the solution. In this article, we study the analogous problem for the linear wave equation with a potential \begin{equation} \label{abstractLW} \tag{*} \partial_t^2u+L_Wu=0,\quad L_W:=-Δ-\frac{N+2}{N-2}W^{\frac{4}{N-2}} \end{equation} obtained by linearizing the energy critical wave equation at the ground-state solution $W$, still in odd space dimension. This equation admits nonzero solutions of the form $A+tB$, where $L_WA=L_WB=0$ with vanishing asymptotic exterior energy. We prove that the exterior energy of a solution of \eqref{abstractLW} is bounded from below by the energy of the projection of the initial data on the orthogonal complement of the space of initial data corresponding to these solutions. This will be used in a subsequent paper to prove soliton resolution for the energy-critical wave equation with radial data in all odd space dimensions. We also prove analogous results for the linearization of the energy-critical wave equation around a Lorentz transform of $W$, and give applications to the dynamics of the nonlinear equation close to the ground state in space dimensions $3$ and $5$.

Scattering for critical radial Neumann waves outside a ball

We show that the solutions of the three-dimensional critical defocusing nonlinear wave equation with Neumann boundary conditions outside a ball and radial initial data scatter. This is to our knowledge the first result of scattering for a nonlinear wave equation with Neumann boundary conditions. Our proof uses the scheme of concentration-compactness/rigidity introduced by Kenig and Merle, extending it to our setup, together with the so-called channels of energy method to rule out compact-flow solutions. We also obtain, for the focusing equation, the same exact scattering/blow-up dichotomy below the energy of the ground-state as in $\mathbb R^3$.

Self-similar solutions of energy-supercritical focusing wave equations in all dimensions

In this paper, we prove the existence of a countable family of regular spherically symmetric self-similar solutions to focusing energy super-critical semi-linear wave equations \begin{equation*} \partial_{tt}u-Δu=|u|^{p-1}u \qquad \text{in} \,\, \mathbb{R}^{N}, \end{equation*} where $N\geq 3$, $1+\frac{4}{N-2}<p$, and, if $N\geq 4$, $p \leq 1+\frac{4}{N-3}$. This was previously known only in the case $N=3$, for integer $p$ (see Bizoń, Maison and Wasserman \cite{BMW}). We also study the asymptotics of these solutions.

Universality of blow up profile for small blow up solutions to the energy critical wave map equation

In this paper we introduce the channel of energy argument to the study of energy critical wave maps into the sphere. More precisely, we prove a channel of energy type inequality for small energy wave maps, and as an application we show that for a wave map that has energy just above the degree one harmonic maps and that blows up in finite time, the solution asymptotically de-couples into a regular part plus a traveling wave with small momentum, in the energy space. In particular, the only possible form of energy concentration is through the concentration of traveling waves. This is often called quantization of energy at blow up. We also give a brief review of important background results in the subcritical and critical regularity theory for the two dimensional wave maps.

Blow-up of the critical Sobolev norm for nonscattering radial solutions of supercritical wave equations on $\mathbb{R}^{3}$

We consider the wave equation in space dimension $3$, with an energy-supercritical nonlinearity which can be either focusing or defocusing. For any radial solution of the equation, with positive maximal time of existence $T$, we prove that one of the following holds: (i) the norm of the solution in the critical Sobolev space goes to infinity as $t$ goes to $T$, or (ii) $T$ is infinite and the solution scatters to a linear solution forward in time. We use a variant of the channel of energy method, relying on a generalized $L^p$-energy which is almost conserved by the flow of the radial linear wave equation.

Profiles of bounded radial solutions of the focusing, energy-critical wave equation

In this paper we consider global and non-global bounded radial solutions of the focusing energy-critical wave equation in space dimension 3. We show that any of these solutions decouples, along a sequence of times that goes to the maximal time of existence, as a sum of modulated stationary solutions, a free radiation term and a term going to 0 in the energy space. In the case where there is only one stationary profile, we show that this expansion holds asymptotically without restriction to a subsequence.

Global existence, scattering and blow-up for the focusing NLS on the hyperbolic space

We prove global well-posedness, scattering and blow-up results for energy-subcritical focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equations on the hyperbolic space. We show in particular the existence of a critical element for scattering for all energy-subcritical power nonlinearities. For mass-supercritical nonlinearity, we show a scattering vs blow-up dichotomy for radial solutions of the equation in low dimension, below natural mass and energy thresholds given by the ground states of the equation. The proofs are based on trapping by mass and energy, compactness and rigidity, and are similar to the ones on the Euclidean space, with a new argument, based on generalized Pohozaev identities, to obtain appropriate monotonicity formulas.

Going beyond the threshold: scattering and blow-up in the focusing NLS equation

We study the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the $L^2$-supercritical regime with finite energy and finite variance initial data. We investigate solutions above the energy (or mass-energy) threshold. In our first result, we extend the known scattering versus blow-up dichotomy above that threshold for finite variance solutions in the energy-subcritical and energy-critical regimes, obtaining scattering and blow-up criteria for solutions with arbitrarily large mass and energy. As a consequence, we characterize the behavior of the ground state initial data modulated by a quadratic phase. Our second result gives two blow up criteria, which are also applicable in the energy-supercritical NLS setting. We finish with various examples illustrating our results.

Profiles for bounded solutions of dispersive equations, with applications to energy-critical wave and Schrödinger equations

Consider a bounded solution of the focusing, energy-critical wave equation that does not scatter to a linear solution. We prove that this solution converges in some weak sense, along a sequence of times and up to scaling and space translation, to a sum of solitary waves. This result is a consequence of a new general compactness/rigidity argument based on profile decomposition. We also give an application of this method to the energy-critical Schrödinger equation.

Solutions of the focusing nonradial critical wave equation with the compactness property

Consider the focusing energy-critical wave equation in space dimension 3, 4 or 5. In a previous paper, we proved that any solution which is bounded in the energy space converges, along a sequence of times and in some weak sense, to a solution with the compactness property, that is a solution whose trajectory stays in a compact subset of the energy space up to space translation and scaling. It is conjectured that the only solutions with the compactness property are stationary solutions and solitary waves that are Lorentz transforms of the former. In this note we prove this conjecture with an additional non-degeneracy assumption related to the invariances of the elliptic equation satisfied by stationary solutions. The proof uses a standard monotonicity formula, modulation theory, and a new channel of energy argument which is independent of the space dimension.

Universality of the blow-up profile for small type II blow-up solutions of energy-critical wave equation: the non-radial case

Following our previous paper in the radial case, we consider blow-up type II solutions to the energy-critical focusing wave equation. Let W be the unique radial positive stationary solution of the equation. Up to the symmetries of the equation, under an appropriate smallness assumption, any type II blow-up solution is asymptotically a regular solution plus a rescaled Lorentz transform of W concentrating at the origin.

Local feedback stabilisation to a non-stationary solution for a damped non-linear wave equation

We study a damped semi-linear wave equation in a bounded domain with smooth boundary. It is proved that any sufficiently smooth solution can be stabilised locally by a finite-dimensional feedback control supported by a given open subset satisfying a geometric condition. The proof is based on an investigation of the linearised equation, for which we construct a stabilising control satisfying the required properties. We next prove that the same control stabilises locally the non-linear problem.

Scattering for radial, bounded solutions of focusing supercritical wave equations

In this paper, we consider the wave equation in space dimension 3 with an energy-supercritical, focusing nonlinearity. We show that any radial solution of the equation which is bounded in the critical Sobolev space is globally defined and scatters to a linear solution. As a consequence, finite time blow-up solutions have critical Sobolev norm converging to infinity (along some sequence of times). The proof relies on the compactness/rigidity method, pointwise estimates on compact solutions obtained by the two last authors, and channels of energy arguments used by the authors in previous works on the energy-critical equation.

Maximizers for the Strichartz norm for small solutions of mass-critical NLS

Consider the mass-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equations in both focusing and defocusing cases for initial data in $L^2$ in space dimension N. By Strichartz inequality, solutions to the corresponding linear problem belong to a global $L^p$ space in the time and space variables, where $p=2+4/N$. In 1D and 2D, the best constant for the Strichartz inequality was computed by D.~Foschi who has also shown that the maximizers are the solutions with Gaussian initial data. Solutions to the nonlinear problem with small initial data in $L^2$ are globally defined and belong to the same global $L^p$ space. In this work we show that the maximum of the $L^p$ norm is attained for a given small mass. In addition, in 1D and 2D, we show that the maximizer is unique and obtain a precise estimate of the maximum. In order to prove this we show that the maximum for the linear problem in 1D and 2D is nondegenerated.

Minimal blow-up solutions to the mass-critical inhomogeneous NLS equation

We consider the mass-critical focusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation in the presence of an external potential, when the nonlinearity is inhomogeneous. We show that if the inhomogeneous factor in front of the nonlinearity is sufficiently flat at a critical point, then there exists a solution which blows up in finite time with the maximal (unstable) rate at this point. In the case where the critical point is a maximum, this solution has minimal mass among the blow-up solutions. As a corollary, we also obtain unstable blow-up solutions of the mass-critical Schrodinger equation on some surfaces. The proof is based on properties of the linearized operator around the ground state, and on a full use of the invariances of the equation with an homogeneous nonlinearity and no potential, via time-dependent modulations.
