Boundary unique continuation on $C^1$-Dini domains and the size of the singular set

Let $u$ be a harmonic function in a $C^1$-Dini domain $D$ such that $u$ vanishes on a boundary surface ball $\partial D \cap B_{5R}(0)$. We consider an effective version of its singular set (up to boundary) $\mathcal{S}(u):=\{X\in \overline{D}: u(X) = |\nabla u(X)| = 0\} $ and give an estimate of its $(d-2)$-dimensional Minkowski content, which only depends on the upper bound of some modified frequency function of $u$ centered at $0$. Such results are already known in the interior and at the boundary of convex domains, when the standard frequency function is monotone at every point. The novelty of our work on Dini domains is how to compensate for the lack of such monotone quantities at boundary as well as interior points.

Soliton resolution for critical co-rotational wave maps and radial cubic wave equation

In this paper we prove the soliton resolution conjecture for all times, for all solutions in the energy space, of the co-rotational wave map equation. To our knowledge this is the first such result for all initial data in the energy space for a wave-type equation. We also prove the corresponding results for radial solutions, which remain bounded in the energy norm, of the cubic (energy-critical) nonlinear wave equation in space dimension 4.

Improved quantitative unique continuation for complex-valued drift equations in the plane

In this article, we investigate the quantitative unique continuation properties of complex-valued solutions to drift equations in the plane. We consider equations of the form $Δu + W \cdot \nabla u = 0$ in $\mathbb{R}^2$, where $W = W_1 + i W_2$ with each $W_j$ real-valued. Under the assumptions that $W_j \in L^{q_j}$ for some $q_1 \in [2, \infty]$, $q_2 \in (2, \infty]$, and $W_2$ exhibits rapid decay at infinity, we prove new global unique continuation estimates. This improvement is accomplished by reducing our equations to vector-valued Beltrami systems. Our results rely on a novel order of vanishing estimate combined with a finite iteration scheme.

$L^p$ resolvent estimates for magnetic Schrödinger operators with unbounded background fields

We prove $L^p$ and smoothing estimates for the resolvent of magnetic Schrödinger operators. We allow electromagnetic potentials that are small perturbations of a smooth, but possibly unbounded background potential. As an application, we prove an estimate on the location of eigenvalues of magnetic Schrödinger and Pauli operators with complex electromagnetic potentials.

Universality of blow up profile for small blow up solutions to the energy critical wave map equation

In this paper we introduce the channel of energy argument to the study of energy critical wave maps into the sphere. More precisely, we prove a channel of energy type inequality for small energy wave maps, and as an application we show that for a wave map that has energy just above the degree one harmonic maps and that blows up in finite time, the solution asymptotically de-couples into a regular part plus a traveling wave with small momentum, in the energy space. In particular, the only possible form of energy concentration is through the concentration of traveling waves. This is often called quantization of energy at blow up. We also give a brief review of important background results in the subcritical and critical regularity theory for the two dimensional wave maps.

Asymptotic decomposition for semilinear wave and equivariant wave map equations

In this paper we give a unified proof to the soliton resolution conjecture along a sequence of times, for the semilinear focusing energy critical wave equations in the radial case and two dimensional equivariant wave map equations, including the four dimensional radial Yang Mills equation, without using outer energy type inequalities. Such inequalities have played a crucial role in previous works with similar results. Roughly speaking, we prove that along a sequence of times approaching the maximal time of existence, the solution decouples to a sum of rescaled solitons and a term vanishing in the energy space, plus a free radiation term in the global case or a regular part in the finite time blow up case. The main difficulty is that in general (for instance for the radial four dimensional Yang Mills case and the radial six dimensional semilinear wave case) we do not have a favorable outer energy inequality for the associated linear wave equations. Our main new input is the simultaneous use of two virial identities.

Characterization of large energy solutions of the equivariant wave map problem: II

We consider 1-equivariant wave maps from 1+2 dimensions to the 2-sphere of finite energy. We establish a classification of all degree 1 global solutions whose energies are less than three times the energy of the harmonic map Q. In particular, for each global energy solution of topological degree 1, we show that the solution asymptotically decouples into a rescaled harmonic map plus a radiation term. Together with our companion article, where we consider the case of finite-time blow up, this gives a characterization of all 1-equivariant, degree 1 wave maps in the energy regime [E(Q), 3E(Q)).

Improved Regularity in Bumpy Lipschitz Domains

This paper is devoted to the proof of Lipschitz regularity, down to the microscopic scale, for solutions of an elliptic system with highly oscillating coefficients, over a highly oscillating Lipschitz boundary. The originality of this result is that it does not assume more than Lipschitz regularity on the boundary. Our Theorem, which is a significant improvement of our previous work on Lipschitz estimates in bumpy domains, should be read as an improved regularity result for an elliptic system over a Lipschitz boundary. Our progress in this direction is made possible by an estimate for a boundary layer corrector. We believe that this estimate in the Sobolev-Kato class is of independent interest.

Profiles of bounded radial solutions of the focusing, energy-critical wave equation

In this paper we consider global and non-global bounded radial solutions of the focusing energy-critical wave equation in space dimension 3. We show that any of these solutions decouples, along a sequence of times that goes to the maximal time of existence, as a sum of modulated stationary solutions, a free radiation term and a term going to 0 in the energy space. In the case where there is only one stationary profile, we show that this expansion holds asymptotically without restriction to a subsequence.

Stable soliton resolution for exterior wave maps in all equivariance classes

In this paper we consider finite energy, \ell-equivariant wave maps from 1+3-dimensional Minkowski space exterior to the unit ball at the origin into the 3-sphere. We impose a Dirichlet boundary condition at r=1, which in this context means that the boundary of the unit ball in the domain gets mapped to the north pole. Each such \ell-equivariant wave map has a fixed integer-valued topological degree, and in each degree class there is a unique harmonic map, which minimizes the energy for maps of the same degree. We prove that an arbitrary \ell-equivariant exterior wave map with finite energy scatters to the unique harmonic map in its degree class, i.e., soliton resolution. This extends the recent results of the first, second, and fourth authors on the 1-equivariant equation to higher equivariance classes, and thus completely resolves a conjecture of Bizon, Chmaj and Maliborski, who observed this asymptotic behavior numerically. The proof relies crucially on exterior energy estimates for the free radial wave equation in dimension d = 2 \ell +3, which are established in a companion paper.

The Landis Conjecture for variable coefficient second-order elliptic PDES

In this work, we study the Landis conjecture for second-order elliptic equations in the plane. Precisely, assume that $V\ge 0$ is a measurable real-valued function satisfying $\|V\|_{L^\infty({\mathbb R}^2)} \le 1$. Let $u$ be a real solution to $\mbox{div}(A \nabla u) - V u = 0$ in ${\mathbb R}^2$. Assume that $|u(z)| \le \exp(c_0 |z|)$ and $u(0) = 1$. Then, for any $R$ sufficiently large, \[ \inf_{|z_0| = R} \|u\|_{L^\infty(B_1(z_0))} \ge \exp(- C R \log R). \] In addition to equations with electric potentials, we also derive similar estimates for equations with magnetic potentials. The proofs rely on transforming the equations to Beltrami systems and Hadamard's three-quasi-circle theorem.

Channels of energy for the linear radial wave equation

Exterior channel of energy estimates for the radial wave equation were first considered in three dimensions by Duyckaerts, the first author, and Merle, and recently for the 5-dimensional case by the first, second, and fourth authors. In this paper we find the general form of the channel of energy estimate in all odd dimensions for the radial free wave equation. This will be used in a companion paper to establish soliton resolution for equivariant wave maps in 3 dimensions exterior to the ball B(0,1), and in all equivariance classes.

On Landis' conjecture in the plane

In this paper we prove a quantitative form of Landis' conjecture in the plane. Precisely, let $W(z)$ be a measurable real vector-valued function and $V(z)\ge 0$ be a real measurable scalar function, satisfying $\|W\|_{L^{\infty}({\mathbf R}^2)}\le 1$ and $\|V\|_{L^{\infty}({\mathbf R}^2)}\le 1$. Let $u$ be a real solution of $Δu-\nabla(Wu)-Vu=0$ in ${\mathbf R}^2$. Assume that $u(0)=1$ and $|u(z)|\le\exp(C_0|z|)$. Then $u$ satisfies $\underset{|z_0|=R}{\inf}\,\underset{|z-z_0|<1}{\sup}|u(z)|\ge \exp(-CR\log R)$, where $C$ depends on $C_0$. In addition to the case of the whole plane, we also establish a quantitative form of Landis' conjecture defined in an exterior domain.

preprint2014arXiv

Quantitative uniqueness estimates for second order elliptic equations with unbounded drift

In this paper we derive quantitative uniqueness estimates at infinity for solutions to an elliptic equation with unbounded drift in the plane. More precisely, let $u$ be a real solution to $Δu+W\cdot\nabla u=0$ in ${\mathbf R}^2$, where $W$ is real vector and $\|W\|_{L^p({\mathbf R}^2)}\le K$ for $2\le p<\infty$. Assume that $\|u\|_{L^{\infty}({\mathbf R}^2)}\le C_0$ and satisfies certain a priori assumption at $0$. Then $u$ satisfies the following asymptotic estimates at $R\gg 1$ \[ \inf_{|z_0|=R}\sup_{|z-z_0|<1}|u(z)|\ge \exp(-C_1R^{1-2/p}\log R)\quad\text{if}\quad 2<p<\infty \] and \[ \inf_{|z_0|=R}\sup_{|z-z_0|<1}|u(z)|\ge R^{-C_2}\quad\text{if}\quad p=2, \] where $C_1>0$ depends on $p, K, C_0$, while $C_2>0$ depends on $K, C_0$ . Using the scaling argument in [BK05], these quantitative estimates are easy consequences of estimates of the maximal vanishing order for solutions of the local problem. The estimate of the maximal vanishing order is a quantitative form of the strong unique continuation property.

The Regularity problem for second order elliptic operators with complex-valued bounded measurable coefficients

The present paper establishes a certain duality between the Dirichlet and Regularity problems for elliptic operators with $t$-independent complex bounded measurable coefficients ($t$ being the transversal direction to the boundary). To be precise, we show that the Dirichlet boundary value problem is solvable in $L^{p'}$, subject to the square function and non-tangential maximal function estimates, if and only if the corresponding Regularity problem is solvable in $L^p$. Moreover, the solutions admit layer potential representations. In particular, we prove that for any elliptic operator with $t$-independent real (possibly non-symmetric) coefficients there exists a $p>1$ such that the Regularity problem is well-posed in $L^p$.

Uniform Lipschitz Estimates in Bumpy Half-Spaces

This paper is devoted to the proof of uniform Hölder and Lipschitz estimates close to oscillating boundaries, for divergence form elliptic systems with periodically oscillating coefficients. Our main point is that no structure is assumed on the oscillations of the boundary. In particular, those are neither periodic, nor quasiperiodic, nor stationary ergodic. We investigate the consequences of our estimates on the large scales of Green and Poisson kernels. Our work opens the door to the use of potential theoretic methods in problems concerned with oscillating boundaries, which is an area of active research.

Relaxation of wave maps exterior to a ball to harmonic maps for all data

In this paper we study 1-equivariant wave maps of finite energy from 1+3-dimensional Minkowski space exterior to the unit ball at the origin into the 3-sphere. We impose a Dirichlet boundary condition at r=1, meaning that the unit sphere in R^3 gets mapped to the north pole. Finite energy implies that spacial infinity gets mapped to either the north or south pole. In particular, each such equivariant wave map has a well-defined topological degree which is an integer. We establish relaxation of such a map of arbitrary energy and degree to the unique stationary harmonic map in its degree class. This settles a recent conjecture of Bizon, Chmaj, Maliborski who observed this asymptotic behavior numerically.

Universality of the blow-up profile for small type II blow-up solutions of energy-critical wave equation: the non-radial case

Following our previous paper in the radial case, we consider blow-up type II solutions to the energy-critical focusing wave equation. Let W be the unique radial positive stationary solution of the equation. Up to the symmetries of the equation, under an appropriate smallness assumption, any type II blow-up solution is asymptotically a regular solution plus a rescaled Lorentz transform of W concentrating at the origin.

Energy partition for the linear radial wave equation

We consider the radial free wave equation in all dimensions and derive asymptotic formulas for the space partition of the energy relative to a light cone, as time goes to infinity. We show that the exterior energy estimate, which Duyckaerts, Merle and the second author obtained in odd dimensions, fails in even dimensions. Positive results for restricted classes of data are obtained. This is a companion paper to our two nonlinear papers with Andrew Lawrie.

Scattering for radial, bounded solutions of focusing supercritical wave equations

In this paper, we consider the wave equation in space dimension 3 with an energy-supercritical, focusing nonlinearity. We show that any radial solution of the equation which is bounded in the critical Sobolev space is globally defined and scatters to a linear solution. As a consequence, finite time blow-up solutions have critical Sobolev norm converging to infinity (along some sequence of times). The proof relies on the compactness/rigidity method, pointwise estimates on compact solutions obtained by the two last authors, and channels of energy arguments used by the authors in previous works on the energy-critical equation.

Square function/non-tangential maximal function estimates and the dirichlet problem for non-symmetric elliptic operators

We consider divergence form elliptic operators L = - div A(x)\nabla, defined in the half space R^{n+1}_+, n \geq 2, where the coefficient matrix A(x) is bounded, measurable, uniformly elliptic, t-independent, and not necessarily symmetric. We establish square function/non-tangential maximal function estimates for solutions of the homogeneous equation Lu = 0, and we then combine these estimates with the method of "ε-approximability" to show that L-harmonic measure is absolutely continuous with respect to surface measure (i.e., n-dimensional Lebesgue measure) on the boundary, in a scale-invariant sense: more precisely, that it belongs to the class A_\infty with respect to surface measure (equivalently, that the Dirichlet problem is solvable with data in L^p, for some p < \infty). Previously, these results had been known only in the case n = 1.

BMO solvability and the $A_\infty$ condition for elliptic operators

We establish a connection between the absolute continuity of elliptic measure associated to a second order divergence form operator with bounded measurable coefficients with the solvability of an endpoint $BMO$ Dirichlet problem. We show that these two notions are equivalent. As a consequence we obtain an end-point perturbation result, i.e., the solvability of the $BMO$ Dirichlet problem implies $L^p$ solvability for all $p>p_0$.
