Rigidity results in multi-bubble dynamics for non-radial energy-critical heat equation

This paper concerns the classification of asymptotic behaviors in multi-bubble dynamics for the energy-critical nonlinear heat equations in large dimensions $N\geq7$ without symmetry. This multi-bubble dynamics appears naturally at least for a sequence of times in view of soliton resolution. We assume each bubble is given by the scalings and translations of $\pm W$ with (localized) non-colliding conditions for a sequence of times, where $W$ is the ground state. The case of one soliton was previously established and in particular there is no blow-up. We consider the case of $J\geq2$ solitons, where we expect only infinite-time blow-up. We are able to identify three different scenarios, where we have a continuous-in-time resolution with an unexpected universal blow-up speed. The first one is when one scaling is much larger than the others. In this case, one bubble does not concentrate (hence stabilize) and the other bubbles concentrate with the universal blow-up speed $t^{-2/(N-6)}$ together with strong sign constraints. Next, assuming we are not in the first scenario, we establish a non-degenerate condition on the positions of bubbles to obtain that all bubbles concentrate with the universal blow-up speed $t^{-1/(N-4)}$. The last case we consider is a degenerate, but not too much degenerate, scenario. Here again, we obtain that all bubbles concentrate with the universal blow-up speed $t^{-1/(N-3)}$. This last rate has not been discovered before. Our theorem covers the case of four or less bubbles and we provide the construction of examples. To our knowledge, this is the first classification result in the non-radial multi-bubble dynamics, where both the scales, positions, and signs enter the dynamics nontrivially.

On degenerate blow-up profiles for the subcritical semilinear heat equation

We consider the semilinear heat equation with a superlinear power nonlinearity in the Sobolev subcritical range. We construct a solution which blows up in finite time only at the origin, with a completely new blow-up profile, which is cross-shaped. Our method is general and extends to the construction of other solutions blowing up only at the origin, with a large variety of blow-up profiles, degenerate or not.

Soliton resolution for critical co-rotational wave maps and radial cubic wave equation

In this paper we prove the soliton resolution conjecture for all times, for all solutions in the energy space, of the co-rotational wave map equation. To our knowledge this is the first such result for all initial data in the energy space for a wave-type equation. We also prove the corresponding results for radial solutions, which remain bounded in the energy norm, of the cubic (energy-critical) nonlinear wave equation in space dimension 4.

Exterior energy bounds for the critical wave equation close to the ground state

By definition, the exterior asymptotic energy of a solution to a wave equation on $\mathbb{R}^{1+N}$ is the sum of the limits as $t\to \pm\infty$ of the energy in the the exterior $\{|x|>|t|\}$ of the wave cone. In our previous work (JEMS 2012, arXiv:1003.0625), we have proved that the exterior asymptotic energy of a solution of the linear wave equation in odd space dimension $N$ is bounded from below by the conserved energy of the solution. In this article, we study the analogous problem for the linear wave equation with a potential \begin{equation} \label{abstractLW} \tag{*} \partial_t^2u+L_Wu=0,\quad L_W:=-Δ-\frac{N+2}{N-2}W^{\frac{4}{N-2}} \end{equation} obtained by linearizing the energy critical wave equation at the ground-state solution $W$, still in odd space dimension. This equation admits nonzero solutions of the form $A+tB$, where $L_WA=L_WB=0$ with vanishing asymptotic exterior energy. We prove that the exterior energy of a solution of \eqref{abstractLW} is bounded from below by the energy of the projection of the initial data on the orthogonal complement of the space of initial data corresponding to these solutions. This will be used in a subsequent paper to prove soliton resolution for the energy-critical wave equation with radial data in all odd space dimensions. We also prove analogous results for the linearization of the energy-critical wave equation around a Lorentz transform of $W$, and give applications to the dynamics of the nonlinear equation close to the ground state in space dimensions $3$ and $5$.

On the implosion of a three dimensional compressible fluid

We consider the compressible three dimensional Navier Stokes and Euler equations. In a suitable regime of barotropic laws, we construct a set of finite energy smooth initial data for which the corresponding solutions to both equations implode (with infinite density) at a later time at a point, and completely describe the associated formation of singularity. Two essential steps of the analysis are the existence of $\mathcal C^\infty$ smooth self-similar solutions to the compressible Euler equations for quantized values of the speed and the derivation of spectral gap estimates for the associated linearized flow which are addressed in the companion papers \cite{MRRSprofile, MRRSdefoc}. All blow up dynamics obtained for the Navier-Stokes problem are of type II (non self-similar).

Dynamics near the ground state for the energy critical nonlinear heat equation in large dimensions

We consider the energy critical semilinear heat equation $$\partial_tu=Δu+|u|^{\frac{4}{d-2}}u, \ \ x\in \mathbb R^d$$ and give a complete classification of the flow near the ground state solitary wave $$Q(x)=\frac{1}{\left( 1+\frac{|x|^2}{d(d-2)}\right)^{\frac{d-2}{2}}}$$ in dimension $d\ge 7$, in the energy critical topology and without radial symmetry assumption. Given an initial data $Q+\varepsilon_0$ with $\parallel \nabla \varepsilon_0\parallel_{L^2}\ll 1$, the solution either blows up in the ODE type I regime, or dissipates, and these two open sets are separated by a codimension one set of solutions asymptotically attracted by the solitary wave. In particular, non self similar type II blow up is ruled out in dimension $d\ge 7$ near the solitary wave even though it is known to occur in smaller dimensions. Our proof is based on sole energy estimates deeply and draws a route map for the classification of the flow near the solitary wave in the energy critical setting. A by-product of our method is the classification of minimal elements around $Q$ belonging to the unstable manifold.

Universality of blow up profile for small blow up solutions to the energy critical wave map equation

In this paper we introduce the channel of energy argument to the study of energy critical wave maps into the sphere. More precisely, we prove a channel of energy type inequality for small energy wave maps, and as an application we show that for a wave map that has energy just above the degree one harmonic maps and that blows up in finite time, the solution asymptotically de-couples into a regular part plus a traveling wave with small momentum, in the energy space. In particular, the only possible form of energy concentration is through the concentration of traveling waves. This is often called quantization of energy at blow up. We also give a brief review of important background results in the subcritical and critical regularity theory for the two dimensional wave maps.

Codimension one threshold manifold for the critical gKdV equation

We construct the 'threshold manifold' near the soliton for the mass critical gKdV equation, completing results obtained in arXiv:1204.4625 and arXiv:1204.4624. In a neighborhood of the soliton, this C1 manifold of codimension one separates solutions blowing up in finite time and solutions in the 'exit regime'. On the manifold, solutions are global in time and converge locally to a soliton. In particular, the soliton behavior is strongly unstable by blowup.

Construction of multi-solitons for the energy-critical wave equation in dimension 5

We construct 2-solitons of any speed of the focusing energy-critical nonlinear wave equation in dimension 5. The existence result also holds for the case of K-solitons, for any K >2, assuming that the speeds are collinear. The main difficulty of the construction is the strong interaction between the solitons due to the slow spatial decay of the single soliton. This is in contrast with previous constructions of multi-solitons for other nonlinear models (like generalized KdV and nonlinear Schrodinger equations in energy subcritical cases), where the interactions are exponentially small in time due to the exponential decay of the solitons.

Profiles of bounded radial solutions of the focusing, energy-critical wave equation

In this paper we consider global and non-global bounded radial solutions of the focusing energy-critical wave equation in space dimension 3. We show that any of these solutions decouples, along a sequence of times that goes to the maximal time of existence, as a sum of modulated stationary solutions, a free radiation term and a term going to 0 in the energy space. In the case where there is only one stationary profile, we show that this expansion holds asymptotically without restriction to a subsequence.

Blow up for the critical gKdV equation II: minimal mass dynamics

We fully revisit the near soliton dynamics for the mass critical (gKdV) equation. In Part I, for a class of initial data close to the soliton, we prove that only three scenario can occur: (BLOW UP) the solution blows up in finite time $T$ in a universal regime with speed $1/(T-t)$; (SOLITON) the solution is global and converges to a soliton in large time; (EXIT) the solution leaves any small neighborhood of the modulated family of solitons in the scale invariant $L^2$ norm. Regimes (BLOW UP) and (EXIT) are proved to be stable. We also show in this class that any nonpositive energy initial data (except solitons) yields finite time blow up, thus obtaining the classification of the solitary wave at zero energy. In Part II, we classify minimal mass blow up by proving existence and uniqueness (up to invariances of the equation) of a minimal mass blow up solution $S(t)$. We also completely describe the blow up behavior of $S(t)$. Second, we prove that $S(t)$ is the universal attractor in the (EXIT) case, i.e. any solution as above in the (EXIT) case is close to $S$ (up to invariances) in $L^2$ at the exit time. In particular, assuming scattering for $S(t)$ (in large positive time), we obtain that any solution in the (EXIT) scenario also scatters, thus achieving the description of the near soliton dynamics.

Dynamics near explicit stationary solutions in similarity variables for solutions of a semilinear wave equation in higher dimensions

This is the first of two papers devoted to the study of the properties of the blow-up surface for the $N$ dimensional semilinear wave equation with subconformal power nonlinearity. In a series of papers, we have clarified the situation in one space dimension. Our goal here is to extend some of the properties to higher dimension. In dimension one, an essential tool was to study the dynamics of the solution in similarity variables, near the set of non-zero equilibria, which are obtained by a Lorentz transform of the space-independent solution. As a matter of fact, the main part of this paper is to study similar objects in higher dimensions. More precisely, near that set of equilibria, we show that solutions are either non-global, or go to zero, or converge to some explicit equilibrium. We also show that the first case cannot occur in the characteristic case, and that only the third possibility occurs in the non-characteristic case, thanks to the non-degeneracy of the blow-up limit, another new result in our paper. As a by-product of our techniques, we obtain the stability of the zero solution.

On the nonexistence of pure multi-solitons for the quartic gKdV equation

We consider the quartic (nonintegrable) (gKdV) equation. Let u(t) be an outgoing 2-soliton of the equation, i.e. a solution behaving exactly as the sum of two solitons (of speeds c1 and c2) for large positive time. In arXiv:0910.3204, for nearly equal solitons, the solution u(t) is computed up to some order of epsilon=1-c2/c1, everywhere in time and space. In particular, it is deduced that u(t) is not a multi-soliton for large negative time, proving the nonexistence of pure multi-soliton in this context. In the present paper, we prove the same result for an explicit range of speeds: 3/4 c1< c2< c1, by a different approach, which does not longer require a precise description of the solution. In fact, the nonexistence result holds for outgoing N-solitons, for any N>1, under an explicit assumption on the speeds, which is a natural generalization of the condition for N=2.

On the stability of the notion of non-characteristic point and blow-up profile for semilinear wave equations

We consider a blow-up solution for the semilinear wave equation in $N$ dimensions, with subconformal power nonlinearity. Introducing $\RR_0$ the set of non-characteristic points with the Lorentz transform of the space-independent solution as asymptotic profile, we show that $\RR_0$ is open and that the blow-up surface is of class $C^1$ on $\RR_0$. Then, we show the stability of $\RR_0$ with respect to initial data.

Profiles for bounded solutions of dispersive equations, with applications to energy-critical wave and Schrödinger equations

Consider a bounded solution of the focusing, energy-critical wave equation that does not scatter to a linear solution. We prove that this solution converges in some weak sense, along a sequence of times and up to scaling and space translation, to a sum of solitary waves. This result is a consequence of a new general compactness/rigidity argument based on profile decomposition. We also give an application of this method to the energy-critical Schrödinger equation.

Solutions of the focusing nonradial critical wave equation with the compactness property

Consider the focusing energy-critical wave equation in space dimension 3, 4 or 5. In a previous paper, we proved that any solution which is bounded in the energy space converges, along a sequence of times and in some weak sense, to a solution with the compactness property, that is a solution whose trajectory stays in a compact subset of the energy space up to space translation and scaling. It is conjectured that the only solutions with the compactness property are stationary solutions and solitary waves that are Lorentz transforms of the former. In this note we prove this conjecture with an additional non-degeneracy assumption related to the invariances of the elliptic equation satisfied by stationary solutions. The proof uses a standard monotonicity formula, modulation theory, and a new channel of energy argument which is independent of the space dimension.

Type II blow up for the energy supercritical NLS

We consider the energy super critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation $$i\pa_tu+Δu+u|u|^{p-1}=0$$ in large dimensions $d\geq 11$ with spherically symmetric data. For all $p>p(d)$ large enough, in particular in the super critical regime, we construct a family of smooth finite time blow up solutions which become singular via concentration of a universal profile with the so called type II quantized blow up rates. The essential feature of these solutions is that all norms below scaling remain bounded. Our analysis fully revisits the construction of type II blow up solutions for the corresponding heat equation, which was done using maximum principle techniques following. Instead we develop a robust energy method, in continuation of the works in the energy and mass critical cases. This shades a new light on the essential role played by the solitary wave and its tail in the type II blow up mechanism, and the universality of the corresponding singularity formation in both energy critical and super critical regimes.

Universality of the blow-up profile for small type II blow-up solutions of energy-critical wave equation: the non-radial case

Following our previous paper in the radial case, we consider blow-up type II solutions to the energy-critical focusing wave equation. Let W be the unique radial positive stationary solution of the equation. Up to the symmetries of the equation, under an appropriate smallness assumption, any type II blow-up solution is asymptotically a regular solution plus a rescaled Lorentz transform of W concentrating at the origin.

Blow up for the critical gKdV equation III: exotic regimes

We consider the blow up problem in the energy space for the critical (gKdV) equation in the continuation of part I and part II. We know from part I that the unique and stable blow up rate for solutions close to the solitons with strong decay on the right is $1/t$. In this paper, we construct non-generic blow up regimes in the energy space by considering initial data with explicit slow decay on the right in space. We obtain finite time blow up solutions with speed $t^{-ν}$ where $ ν>11/13,$ as well as global in time growing up solutions with both exponential growth or power growth. These solutions can be taken with initial data arbitrarily close to the ground state solitary wave.

Scattering for radial, bounded solutions of focusing supercritical wave equations

In this paper, we consider the wave equation in space dimension 3 with an energy-supercritical, focusing nonlinearity. We show that any radial solution of the equation which is bounded in the critical Sobolev space is globally defined and scatters to a linear solution. As a consequence, finite time blow-up solutions have critical Sobolev norm converging to infinity (along some sequence of times). The proof relies on the compactness/rigidity method, pointwise estimates on compact solutions obtained by the two last authors, and channels of energy arguments used by the authors in previous works on the energy-critical equation.

Blow up dynamics for smooth data equivariant solutions to the energy critical Schrodinger map problem

We consider the energy critical Schrodinger map to the 2-sphere for equivariant initial data of homotopy number k=1. We show the existence of a set of smooth initial data arbitrarily close to the ground state harmonic map in the scale invariant norm which generates finite time blow up solutions. We give a sharp description of the corresponding singularity formation which occurs by concentration of a universal bubble of energy. The concentration rate is given by $$λ(t)=κ(u)\frac{T-t}{|\log (T-t)|^2}(1+o(1))$$ for some $κ(u)>0$. The detailed proofs of the results will appear in a companion paper.

Blow up dynamics for smooth equivariant solutions to the energy critical Schrödinger map

We consider the energy critical Schrödinger map problem with the 2-sphere target for equivariant initial data of homotopy index $k=1$. We show the existence of a codimension one set of smooth well localized initial data arbitrarily close to the ground state harmonic map in the energy critical norm, which generates finite time blow up solutions. We give a sharp description of the corresponding singularity formation which occurs by concentration of a universal bubble of energy.

Maximizers for the Strichartz norm for small solutions of mass-critical NLS

Consider the mass-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equations in both focusing and defocusing cases for initial data in $L^2$ in space dimension N. By Strichartz inequality, solutions to the corresponding linear problem belong to a global $L^p$ space in the time and space variables, where $p=2+4/N$. In 1D and 2D, the best constant for the Strichartz inequality was computed by D.~Foschi who has also shown that the maximizers are the solutions with Gaussian initial data. Solutions to the nonlinear problem with small initial data in $L^2$ are globally defined and belong to the same global $L^p$ space. In this work we show that the maximum of the $L^p$ norm is attained for a given small mass. In addition, in 1D and 2D, we show that the maximizer is unique and obtain a precise estimate of the maximum. In order to prove this we show that the maximum for the linear problem in 1D and 2D is nondegenerated.

The instability of Bourgain-Wang solutions for the L^2 critical NLS

We consider the two dimensional $L^2$ critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation $i\pa_tu+Δu+u|u|^2=0$. In the pioneering work \cite{BW}, Bourgain and Wang have constructed smooth solutions which blow up in finite time $T<+\infty$ with the pseudo conformal speed $$\|\nabla u(t)\|_{L^2}\sim \frac{1}{T-t},$$ and which display some decoupling between the regular and the singular part of the solution at blow up time. We prove that this dynamic is unstable. More precisely, we show that any such solution with small super critical $L^2$ mass lies on the boundary of both $H^1$ open sets of global solutions that scatter forward and backwards in time, and solutions that blow up in finite time on the right in the log-log regime exhibited in \cite{MR1}, \cite{MR4}, \cite{R1}. We moreover exhibit some continuation properties of the scattering solution after blow up time and recover the chaotic phase behavior first exhibited in \cite{Mcpam} in the critical mass case
