Poisson Hierarchy of Discrete Strings

The Poisson geometry of a discrete string in three dimensional Euclidean space is investigated. For this the Frenet frames are converted into a spinorial representation, the discrete spinor Frenet equa- tion is interpreted in terms of a transfer matrix formalism, and Poisson brackets are introduced in terms of the spinor components. The construction is then generalised, in a self-similar manner, into an infinite hierarchy of Poisson algebras. As an example, the classical Virasoro (Witt) algebra that determines reparametrisation diffeomorphism along a continuous string, is identified as a particular sub-algebra, in the hierarchy of the discrete string Poisson algebra.

On spinors, strings, integrable models and decomposed Yang-Mills theory

This paper deals with various interrelations between strings and surfaces in three dimensional ambient space, two dimensional integrable models and two dimensional and four dimensional decomposed SU(2) Yang-Mills theories. Initially, a spinor version of the Frenet equation is introduced in order to describe the differential geometry of static three dimensional string-like structures. Then its relation to the structure of the su(2) Lie algebra valued Maurer-Cartan one-form is presented; while by introducing time evolution of the string a Lax pair is obtained, as an integrability condition. In addition, it is show how the Lax pair of the integrable nonlinear Schroedinger equation becomes embedded into the Lax pair of the time extended spinor Frenet equation and it is described how a spinor based projection operator formalism can be used to construct the conserved quantities, in the case of the nonlinear Schroedinger equation. Then the Lax pair structure of the time extended spinor Frenet equation is related to properties of flat connections in a two dimensional decomposed SU(2) Yang-Mills theory. In addition, the connection between the decomposed Yang-Mills and the Gauss-Godazzi equation that describes surfaces in three dimensional ambient space is presented. In that context the relation between isothermic surfaces and integrable models is discussed. Finally, the utility of the Cartan approach to differential geometry is considered. In particular, the similarities between the Cartan formalism and the structure of both two dimensional and four dimensional decomposed SU(2) Yang-Mills theories are discussed, while the description of two dimensional integrable models as embedded structures in the four dimensional decomposed SU(2) Yang-Mills theory are presented.

Wormholes Threaded by Chiral Fields

We consider Lorentzian wormholes with a phantom field and chiral matter fields. The chiral fields are described by the non-linear sigma model with or without a Skyrme term. When the gravitational coupling of the chiral fields is increased, the wormhole geometry changes. The single throat is replaced by a double throat with a belly inbetween. For a maximal value of the coupling, the radii of both throats reach zero. Then the interior part pinches off, leaving a closed universe and two (asymptotically) flat spaces. A stability analysis shows that all wormholes threaded by chiral fields inherit the instability of the Ellis wormhole.

Solutions of the Generic Non-Compact Weyl Equation

In this paper, solutions of the generic non-compact Weyl equation are obtained. In particular, by identifying a suitable similarity transformation and introducing a non-trivial change of variables we are able to implement azimuthal dependence on the solutions of the diagonal non-compact Weyl equation. We also discuss some open questions related to the construction of infinite BPS monopole configurations.

BPS Monopoles and Open Spin Chains

We construct SU(n+1) BPS spherically symmetric monopoles with minimal symmetry breaking by solving the full Weyl equation. In this context, we explore and discuss the existence of open spin chain-like part within the Weyl equation. For instance, in the SU(3) case the relevant spin chain is the 2-site spin 1/2 XXX chain with open boundary conditions. We exploit the existence of such a spin chain part in order to solve the full Weyl equation.

Weyl Equation and (Non)-Commutative SU(n+1) BPS Monopoles

We apply the ADHMN construction to obtain the SU(n+1)(for generic values of n) spherically symmetric BPS monopoles with minimal symmetry breaking. In particular, the problem simplifies by solving the Weyl equation, leading to a set of coupled equations, whose solutions are expressed in terms of the Whittaker functions. Next, this construction is generalized for non-commutative SU(n+1) BPS monopoles, where the corresponding solutions are given in terms of the Heun B functions.

Noncommutative Baby Skyrmions

We subject the baby Skyrme model to a Moyal deformation, for unitary or Grassmannian target spaces and without a potential term. In the abelian case, the radial BPS configurations of the ordinary noncommutative sigma model also solve the baby Skyrme equation of motion. This gives a class of exact analytic noncommutative baby Skyrmions, which have a singular commutative limit but are stable against scaling due to the noncommutativity. We compute their energies, investigate their stability and determine the asymptotic two-Skyrmion interaction.

Non-BPS Black holes in N=4 Supersymmetric Yang-Mills Theory Coupled to Gravity

We construct non-BPS regular and black hole solutions of N=4 SU(N) supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory coupled to Einstein gravity. Our numerical studies reveal a number of interesting phenomena when the gravitational constant $α=M_{YM}/gM_{Planck}$ (where $M_{Planck}$ is the Planck mass and $M_{YM}$ is the monopole mass) is either weak (flat limit) or comparable to the Yang-Mills interaction. In fact, black hole solutions exist in a certain bounded domain in the $(α, r_H)$ plane where $r_H$ denotes the radius of the black

Gravitating SU(N) Monopoles from Harmonic maps

Spherically symmetric solutions of the SU(N) Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs system are constructed using the harmonic map ansatz. The problem reduces to solving a set of ordinary differential equations for the appropriate profile functions. In the SU(2) case, we recover the equations studied in great detail previously, while for the SU(N) (N > 2) case we find new solutions. In the SU(3) case we see that our expressions are the gravitating analogues of the solutions obtained through the SO(3) embedding into SU(2).

Non-trivial Soliton Scattering in Planar Integrable Systems

The behavior of solitons in integrable theories is strongly constrained by the integrability of the theory, that is by the existence of an infinite number of conserved quantities that these theories are known to possess. As a result the soliton scattering of such theories are expected to be trivial (with no change of direction, velocity or shape). In this paper we present an extended review on soliton scattering of two spatial dimensional integrable systems which have been derived as dimensional reductions of the self-dual Yang-Mills-Higgs equations and whose scattering properties are highly non-trivial.

Monopoles and Harmonic Maps

Recently Jarvis has proved a correspondence between SU(N) monopoles and rational maps of the Riemann sphere into flag manifolds. Furthermore, he has outlined a construction to obtain the monopole fields from the rational map. In this paper we examine this construction in some detail and provide explicit examples for spherically symmetric SU(N) monopoles with various symmetry breakings. In particular we show how to obtain these monopoles from harmonic maps into complex projective spaces. The approach extends in a natural way to monopoles in hyperbolic space and we use it to construct new spherically symmetric SU(N) hyperbolic monopoles.

Solutions of the Modified Chiral Model in (2+1) Dimensions

This paper deals with classical solutions of the modified chiral model on $R^{2+1}$. Such solutions are shown to correspond to products of various factor which we call time-dependent unitons. Then the problem of solving the system of second-order partial differential equations for the chiral field is reduced to solving a sequence of systems of first-order partial differential equations for the unitons.

Soliton Dynamics in a Novel Discrete O(3) Sigma Model in (2+1) Dimensions

The O(3) sigma model in two spatial dimensions admits topological (Bogomol'nyi) lower bound on its energy. This paper proposes a lattice version of this system which maintains the Bogomol'nyi bound and allows the explicit construction of static solitons on the lattice. Numerical simulations show that these lattice solitons are unstable undersmall perturbations; in fact, their size changes linearly with time.
