Boson stars and black holes with wavy scalar hair

In this paper, we follow up on the discovery of a new type of solution in the Einstein-Maxwell system coupled minimally to a self-interacting complex scalar field. For sufficiently large gravitational coupling and sufficiently small electromagnetic coupling we demonstrate that boson stars as well as black holes can carry scalar hair that shows a distinct new feature~: a number of spatial oscillations in the scalar field away from the core or horizon, respectively. These spatial oscillations appear also in the curvature invariants and hence should be a detectable feature of the space-time. As a first hint that this is true, we show that the effective potential for null geodesics in this space-time possesses a local minimum indicating that in the spatial region where oscillations occur a new stable photon sphere should be possible. We also study the interior of the black holes with scalar hair and show that the curvature singularity appears at a finite value of the radius and that black holes with wavy scalar hair have this singularity very close to the center.

Scalarization of asymptotically Anti-de Sitter black holes with applications to holographic phase transitions

We study the spontaneous scalarization of spherically symmetric, static and asymptotically Anti-de Sitter (aAdS) black holes in a scalar-tensor gravity model with non-mininal coupling of the form $ϕ^2\left(α{\cal R} + γ{\cal G}\right)$, where $α$ and $γ$ are constants, while ${\cal R}$ and ${\cal G}$ are the Ricci scalar and Gauss-Bonnet term, respectively. Since these terms act as an effective ``mass'' for the scalar field, non-trivial values of the scalar field in the black hole space-time are possible for {\it a priori} vanishing scalar field mass. In particular, we demonstrate that the scalarization of an aAdS black hole requires the curvature invariant $-\left(α{\cal R} + γ{\cal G}\right)$ to drop below the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound close to the black hole horizon, while it asymptotes to a value well above the bound. The dimension of the dual operator on the AdS boundary depends on the parameters $α$ and $γ$ and we demonstrate that -- for fixed operator dimension -- the expectation value of this dual operator increases with decreasing temperature of the black hole, i.e. of the dual field theory. When taking backreaction of the space-time into account, we find that the scalarization of the black hole is the dual description of a phase transition in a strongly coupled quantum system, i.e. corresponds to a holographic phase transition. A possible application are liquid-gas quantum phase transitions, e.g. in $^4$He. Finally, we demonstrate that extremal black holes with $AdS_2\times S^2$ near-horizon geometry {\it cannot support regular scalar fields on the horizon} in the scalar-tensor model studied here.

Strong gravity effects of charged Q-clouds and inflating black holes

In this paper, we re-examine charged Q-clouds around spherically symmetric, static black holes. In particular, we demonstrate that for fixed coupling constants two different branches of charged scalar clouds exist around Schwarzschild black holes. This had not been noticed previously. We find that the new solutions possess a "hard wall" at maximal possible gauge coupling. This wall separates the interior (containing the black hole horizon), in which the scalar field is trapped in the "false vacuum", from the "true vacuum" exterior. When taking back-reaction onto the space-time into account, we find that at maximal possible back reaction, the black hole solutions corresponding to these two branches either become extremal black holes with diverging scalar field derivative on the horizon or inflating black holes with a second, "cosmological" horizon which - outside this second horizon - correspond to extremal Reissner-Nordström black holes.

Black hole spontaneous scalarisation with a positive cosmological constant

A scalar field non-minimally coupled to certain geometric [or matter] invariants which are sourced by [electro]vacuum black holes (BHs) may spontaneously grow around the latter, due to a tachyonic instability. This process is expected to lead to a new, dynamically preferred, equilibrium state: a scalarised BH. The most studied geometric [matter] source term for such spontaneous BH scalarisation is the Gauss-Bonnet quadratic curvature [Maxwell invariant]. This phenomenon has been mostly analysed for asymptotically flat spacetimes. Here we consider the impact of a positive cosmological constant, which introduces a cosmological horizon. The cosmological constant does not change the local conditions on the scalar coupling for a tachyonic instability of the scalar-free BHs to emerge. But it leaves a significant imprint on the possible new scalarised BHs. It is shown that no scalarised BH solutions exist, under a smoothness assumption, if the scalar field is confined between the BH and cosmological horizons. Admitting the scalar field can extend beyond the cosmological horizon, we construct new scalarised BHs. These are asymptotically de Sitter in the (matter) Einstein-Maxwell-scalar model, with only mild difference with respect to their asymptotically flat counterparts. But in the (geometric) extended-scalar-tensor-Gauss-Bonnet-scalar model, they have necessarily non-standard asymptotics, as the tachyonic instability dominates in the far field. This interpretation is supported by the analysis of a test tachyon on a de Sitter background.

Boson stars in biscalar extensions of Horndeski gravity

This paper is concerned with the construction and analysis of boson stars in the context of nonminimal derivative coupling theories. In particular we embed our model in the biscalar extension of Horndeski gravity, considering a scalar field theory displaying a nonminimally coupled kinetic term given by the Einstein tensor. We focus on the case where the potential is given by a mass term only, and when a six order self-interaction is included. In the latter case we consider specific couplings in the self-interacting terms in such a way that our self-interaction is given by a positive definite potential presenting two degenerate local vacua. We show how solutions can be obtained and we compare its principal properties with standard configurations constructed with the usual minimally coupled kinetic term.

Inside black holes with synchronized hair

Recently, various examples of asymptotically flat, rotating black holes (BHs) with synchronized hair have been explicitly constructed, including Kerr BHs with scalar or Proca hair, and Myers-Perry BHs with scalar hair and a mass gap, showing there is a general mechanism at work. All these solutions have been found numerically, integrating the fully non-linear field equations of motion from the event horizon outwards. Here, we address the spacetime geometry of these solutions inside the event horizon. Firstly, we provide arguments, within linear theory, that there is no regular inner horizon for these solutions. Then, we address this question fully non-linearly, using as a tractable model five dimensional, equal spinning, Myers-Perry hairy BHs. We find that, for non-extremal solutions: $(1)$ the inside spacetime geometry in the vicinity of the event horizon is smooth and the equations of motion can be integrated inwards; $(2)$ before an inner horizon is reached, the spacetime curvature grows (apparently) without bound. In all cases, our results suggest the absence of a smooth Cauchy horizon, beyond which the metric can be extended, for hairy BHs with synchronized hair.

Minimal boson stars in 5 dimensions: classical instability and existence of ergoregions

We show that minimal boson stars, i.e. boson stars made out of scalar fields without self-interaction, are always classically unstable in 5 space-time dimensions. This is true for the non-rotating as well as rotating case with two equal angular momenta and in both Einstein and Gauss-Bonnet gravity, respectively, and contrasts with the 4-dimensional case, where classically stable minimal boson stars exist. We also discuss the appearance of ergoregions for rotating boson stars with two equal angular momenta. While rotating black holes typically possess an ergoregion, rotating compact objects without horizons such as boson stars have ergoregions only in a limited range of the parameter space. In this paper, we show for which values of the parameters these ergoregions appear and compare this with the case of standard Einstein gravity. We also point out that the interplay between Gauss-Bonnet gravity and rotation puts constraints on the behaviour of the space-time close to the rotation axis.

Charged isotropic non-Abelian dyonic black branes

We construct black holes with a Ricci flat horizon in Einstein--Yang-Mills theory with a negative cosmological constant, which approach asymptotically an AdS$_d$ spacetime background (with $d\geq 4$). These solutions are isotropic, $i.e.$ all space directions in a hypersurface of constant radial and time coordinates are equivalent, and possess both electric and magnetic fields. We find that the basic properties of the non-Abelian solutions are similar to those of the dyonic isotropic branes in Einstein-Maxwell theory (which, however, exist in even spacetime dimensions only). These black branes possess a nonzero magnetic field strength on the flat boundary metric, which leads to a divergent mass of these solutions, as defined in the usual way. However, a different picture is found for odd spacetime dimensions, where a non-Abelian Chern-Simons term can be incorporated in the action. This allows for black brane solutions with a magnetic field which vanishes asymptotically.

From topological to non-topological solitons: kinks, domain walls and Q-balls in a scalar field model with non-trivial vacuum manifold

We consider a scalar field model with a self-interaction potential that possesses a discrete vacuum manifold. We point out that this model allows for both topological as well as non-topological solitons. In (1+1) dimensions both type of solutions have finite energy, while in (3+1) dimensions, the topological solitons have finite energy per unit area only and correspond to domain walls. Non-topological solitons with finite energy do exist in (3+1) dimensions due to a non-trivial phase of the scalar field and an associated U(1) symmetry of the model, though. We construct these so-called Q-ball solutions numerically, point out the differences to previous studies with different scalar field potentials and also discuss the influence of a minimal coupling to both gravity as well as a U(1) gauge field. In this latter case, the conserved Noether charge Q can be interpreted as the electric charge of the solution.

Self-interacting boson stars with a single Killing vector field in Anti-de Sitter

We construct rotating boson stars in (4+1)-dimensional asymptotically Anti-de Sitter space-time (aAdS) with two equal angular momenta that are composed out of a massive and self-interacting scalar field. These solutions possess a single Killing vector field. We construct explicit solutions of the equations in the case of a fixed AdS background and vanishing self-coupling of the scalar field. These are the generalizations of the oscillons discussed in the literature previously now taking the mass of the scalar field into account. We study the evolution of the spectrum of massive oscillons when taking backreaction and/or the self-coupling into account numerically. We observe that very compact boson stars possess an ergoregion.

Charged Q-balls and boson stars and dynamics of charged test particles

We construct electrically charged Q-balls and boson stars in a model with a scalar self-interaction potential resulting from gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking. We discuss the properties of these solutions in detail and emphasize the differences to the uncharged case. We observe that Q-balls can only be constructed up to a maximal value of the charge of the scalar field, while for boson stars the interplay between the attractive gravitational force and the repulsive electromagnetic force determines their behaviour. We find that the vacuum is stable with respect to pair production in the presence of our charged boson stars. We also study the motion of charged, massive test particles in the space-time of boson stars. We find that in contrast to charged black holes the motion of charged test particles in charged boson star space-times is planar, but that the presence of the scalar field plays a crucial role for the qualitative features of the trajectories. Applications of this test particle motion can be made in the study of extreme-mass ratio inspirals (EMRIs) as well as astrophysical plasmas relevant e.g. in the formation of accretion discs and polar jets of compact objects.

Myers-Perry black holes with scalar hair and a mass gap

We construct a family of asymptotically flat, rotating black holes with scalar hair and a regular horizon, within five dimensional Einstein's gravity minimally coupled to a complex, massive scalar field doublet. These solutions are supported by rotation and have no static limit. They are described by their mass $M$, two equal angular momenta $J_1=J_2\equiv J$ and a conserved Noether charge $Q$, measuring the scalar hair. For vanishing horizon size the solutions reduce to five dimensional boson stars. In the limit of vanishing Noether charge density, the scalar field becomes point-wise arbitrarily small and the geometry becomes, locally, arbitrarily close to that of a specific set of Myers-Perry black holes (MPBHs); but there remains a global difference with respect to the latter, manifest in a finite mass gap. Thus, the scalar hair never becomes a linear perturbation of MPBHs. This is a qualitative difference when compared to Kerr black holes with scalar hair~\cite{Herdeiro:2014goa}. Whereas the existence of the latter can be anticipated in linear theory, from the existence of scalar bound states on the Kerr geometry (i.e. scalar clouds), the hair of these MPBHs is intrinsically non-linear.

AdS solitons with conformal scalar hair

We study spherically symmetric soliton solutions in a model with a conformally coupled scalar field as well as in full conformal gravity. We observe that a new type of limiting behaviour appears for particular choices of the self-coupling of the scalar field, i.e. the solitons interpolate smoothly between the Anti-de Sitter vacuum and an uncharged configuration. Furthermore, within conformal gravity the qualitative approach of a limiting solution does not change when varying the charge of the scalar field - contrary to the Einstein-Hilbert case. However, it changes with the scalar self-coupling.

Black hole solutions in d=5 Chern-Simons gravity

The five dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity with a negative cosmological constant becomes, for a special value of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant, a Chern-Simons (CS) theory of gravity. In this work we discuss the properties of several different types of black object solutions of this model. Special attention is paid to the case of spinning black holes with equal-magnitude angular momenta which posses a regular horizon of spherical topology. Closed form solutions are obtained in the small angular momentum limit. Nonperturbative solutions are constructed by solving numerically the equations of the model. Apart from that, new exact solutions describing static squashed black holes and black strings are also discussed. The action and global charges of all configurations studied in this work are obtained by using the quasilocal formalism with boundary counterterms generalized for the case of a d=5 CS theory.

Formation of scalar hair on Gauss-Bonnet solitons and black holes

We discuss the formation of scalar hair on Gauss-Bonnet solitons and black holes in 5-dimensional Anti-de Sitter (AdS) space-time. We present new results on the static case and point out further details. We find that the presence of the Gauss-Bonnet term has an influence on the pattern of soliton solutions for small enough values of the electric charge. We also discuss rotating Gauss-Bonnet black holes with and without scalar hair.

Q-ball formation at the deconfinement temperature in large-$N_c$ QCD

The deconfinement phase transition in large-$N_c$ QCD is studied within the framework of an effective Polyakov-loop model, where the potential has a U(1) symmetry originating in the large-$N_c$ limit of a Z$_{N_c}$-symmetric model. At the critical temperature, the shape of the effective potential allows the existence of Q-balls as position-dependent fluctuations of the Polyakov loop. Q-balls with spherical or axial symmetry are numerically obtained from the equations of motion of the effective model under consideration. The physical properties of these non-topological solitons (mass, charge and size) are discussed, as well as their interpretation in terms of spinning "bubbles", with various shapes, of deconfined matter surrounded by a confined environment.

Rotating Boson Stars in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

A self-interacting SU(2)-doublet of complex scalar fields, minimally coupled to Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity is considered in five space-time dimensions. The classical equations admit two families of solitons corresponding to spinning and non-spinning bosons stars. The generic solutions are constructed numerically and agree with exact results that are available in special limits of the parameters. The pattern of the boson stars is shown to be qualitatively affected by the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant.

Stability of charged solitons and formation of boson stars in 5-dimensional Anti-de Sitter space-time

We study the stability of charged solitons in 5-dimensional Anti-de Sitter (AdS) space-time. We show that for appropriate choices of the parameters of the model these solutions become unstable to form scalar hair. We find that the existence of charged solitons with scalar hair depends crucially on the charge and the mass of the scalar field. We investigate the dependence of the spectrum of solutions on the mass of the scalar field in detail. For positive mass of the scalar field the hairy solitons can be interpreted as charged boson stars. We find that for sufficiently small value of the charge of the scalar field a "forbidden band" of the boson star mass and charge exists, while all our results indicate that - contrary to the asymptotically flat space-time case - boson stars in asymptotically AdS can have arbitrarily large charge and mass.

Charged squashed black holes with negative cosmological constant in odd dimensions

We construct new electrically charged solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations with negative cosmological constant in general odd dimensions $d=2n+3 \geq 5$. They correspond to higher dimensional generalizations of the squashed black hole solutions, which were known so far only in five dimensions. We explore numerically the general properties of such classical solutions and, using a counterterm prescription, we compute their conserved charges and discuss their thermodynamics.

Electrically charged black branes in N=4^+, D=5 gauged supergravity

We analyze the properties of asymptotically AdS electrically charged black brane solutions in a consistent truncation of the N=4^+, D=5 Romans' gauged supergravity which contains gravity, SU(2) and U(1) gauge fields, and a dilaton possessing a nontrivial potential approaching a constant negative value at infinity. We find that the U(1)\times U(1) solutions become unstable to forming non-Abelian hair. These configurations emerge as zero modes of the Abelian solutions at critical temperature and a critical (nonvanishing) ratio of the electric charges and can be viewed as holographic p-wave superfluids.

Excited DeSitter brane worlds localized by a kink

We reconsider, in five-dimensional space-time, the issue of thick brane localized in the extra dimension by a kink formed by a scalar field. The localization is achieved by a sine-Gordon potential. Apart from a fundamental brane (discovered by Koley and Kar \cite{koley_kar}) where the scalar field is a monotonic function of the extra dimension), we show that a series of new solutions exist as well, labelled by the number of zeros of the scalar field. These solutions are regular, localized on the brane and mirror symmetric with respect to the extra dimension. They form a tower of "excited branes". The study of some perturbations of the solutions reveals that the new solutions are not stable. Finally, fermions are coupled to the scalar field by means of a Yukawa potential and their localization in the background of the new solutions is examined. %%The influence on the new solutions on the fermions on the brane is investigated. It turns out that the excited branes can localize left and right chiral fermion either on the brane and/or in the bulk but close to the brane.

Hairy charged Gauss-Bonnet solitons and black holes

We study the stability of (4+1)-dimensional charged Gauss-Bonnet black holes and solitons. We observe an instability related to the condensation of a scalar field and construct explicit "hairy" black hole and soliton solutions of the full system of coupled field equations. We investigate the cases of a massless scalar field as well as that of a tachyonic scalar field. The solitons with scalar hair exist for a particular range of the charge and the gauge coupling. This range is such that for intermediate values of the gauge coupling a "forbidden band" of charges for the hairy solitons exists. We also discuss the behaviour of the black holes with scalar hair when changing the horizon radius and/or the gauge coupling and find that various scenarios at the approach of a limiting solution appear. One observation is that hairy Gauss-Bonnet black holes never tend to a regular soliton solution in the limit of vanishing horizon radius. We also prove that extremal Gauss-Bonnet black holes can not carry massless or tachyonic scalar hair and show that our solutions tend to their planar counterparts for large charges.

An instability of the Reissner-Nordstrom solution and new hairy black holes in d=5 dimensions

The d=5 Reissner-Nordstrom black hole becomes unstable when considered as a solution of Einstein--Yang-Mills--Chern-Simons theory. The existence of a marginally stable mode gives rise to a new branch of black holes with non-Abelian magnetic fields outside the horizon. These solutions carry a nonzero electric charge and have finite mass. We argue that these features manifest themselves both for Minkowski and (Anti-)de Sitter asymptotics. The properties of solutions in a de Sitter background are new to the present work and are emphasised. All solutions constructed have finite mass by virtue of the presence of the Chern-Simons term, which in d=5 plays the role of a higher order term scaling appropriately for this purpose.

Einstein-Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons solutions in D=2n+1 dimensions

We investigate finite energy solutions of the Einstein--Yang-Mills--Chern-Simons system in odd spacetime dimensions, D=2n+1, with n>1. Our configurations are static and spherically symmetric, approaching at infinity a Minkowski spacetime background. In contrast with the Abelian case, the contribution of the Chern-Simons term is nontrivial already in the static, spherically symmetric limit. Both globally regular, particle-like solutions and black holes are constructed numerically for several values of D. These solutions carry a nonzero electric charge and have finite mass. For globally regular solutions, the value of the electric charge is fixed by the Chern-Simons coupling constant. The black holes can be thought as non-linear superpositions of Reissner-Nordstrom and non-Abelian configurations. A systematic discussion of the solutions is given for D=5, in which case the Reissner-Nordstrom black hole becomes unstable and develops non-Abelian hair. We show that some of these non-Abelian configurations are stable under linear, spherically symmetric perturbations. A detailed discussion of an exact D=5 solution describing extremal black holes and solitons is also provided.

Holographic superfluid/fluid/insulator phase transitions in 2+1 dimensions

We study the breaking of an Abelian symmetry close to the horizon of a black string as well as close to the tip of a solitonic, cigar-shaped solution in (3+1)-dimensional Anti-de Sitter space-time. We use these solutions to describe holographic superfluids away from the probe limit, i.e. taking backreaction into account. We observe that up to four phases exist in this model representing the duals of black string solutions with and without scalar hair and solitonic, cigar-shaped solutions with and without scalar hair, respectively. We construct the full phase diagram that describes the phase transitions between fluids and superfluids, between insulators and superfluids as well as between insulators and fluids. In the probe limit the phase transition from fluids to black string superfluids changes from being second order to first order for sufficiently large values of the superfluid velocity and/or the angular momentum of the dual black string. We find that if we take backreaction into account phase transitions that are first order for weak backreaction become again second order for sufficiently strong backreaction. Moreover, we find a new type of insulator/superfluid phase transition for strong backreaction and vanishing superfluid velocity as well as a new type of fluid/superfluid phase transition that exists only for non-vanishing superfluid velocity.

Stability of Gauss-Bonnet black holes in Anti-de-Sitter space-time against scalar field condensation

We study the stability of static, hyperbolic Gauss-Bonnet black holes in (4+1)-dimensional Anti-de-Sitter (AdS) space-time against the formation of scalar hair. Close to extremality the black holes possess a near-horizon topology of AdS_2 x H^3 such that within a certain range of the scalar field mass one would expect that they become unstable to the condensation of an uncharged scalar field. We confirm this numerically and observe that there exists a family of hairy black hole solutions labelled by the number of nodes of the scalar field function. We construct explicit examples of solutions with a scalar field that possesses zero nodes, one node and two nodes, respectively, and show that the solutions with nodes persist in the limit of Einstein gravity, i.e. for vanishing Gauss-Bonnet coupling. We observe that the interval of the mass for which scalar field condensation appears decreases with increasing Gauss-Bonnet coupling and/or with increasing node number.

AdS_5 solutions in Einstein--Yang-Mills--Chern-Simons theory

We investigate static, spherically symmetric solutions of an Einstein-Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons system with negative cosmological constant, for an SO(6) gauge group. For a particular value of the Chern-Simons coefficient, this model can be viewed as a truncation of the five-dimensional maximal gauged supergravity and we expect that the basic properties of the solutions in the full model to persist in this truncation. Both globally regular, particle-like solutions and black holes are considered. In contrast with the Abelian case, the contribution of the Chern-Simons term is nontrivial already in the static, spherically symmetric limit. We find two types of solutions: the generic configurations whose magnetic gauge field does not vanish fast enough at infinity (although the spacetime is asymptotically AdS), whose mass function is divergent, and the special configurations, whose existence depends on the Chern--Simons term, which are endowed with finite mass. In the case of the generic configurations, we argue that the divergent mass implies a nonvanishing trace for the stress tensor of the dual d=4 theory.

Asymptotically flat, stable black hole solutions in Einstein--Yang-Mills--Chern-Simons theory

We construct finite mass, asymptotically flat black hole solutions in d=5 Einstein--Yang-Mills--Chern-Simons theory. Our results indicate the existence of a second order phase transition between Reissner-Nordstrom solutions and the non-Abelian black holes which generically are thermodynamically preferred. Some of the non-Abelian configurations are also stable under linear, spherically symmetric perturbations. In addition a solution in closed form describing an extremal black hole with non-Abelian hair is found for a special value of the Chern-Simons coupling constant.

Holographic Superconductors in 3+1 dimensions away from the probe limit

We study holographic superconductors in 3+1 dimensions away from the probe limit, i.e. taking back-reaction of the space-time into account. We consider the case of pure Einstein- and Gauss-Bonnet gravity, respectively. Similar to the probe limit we observe that the critical temperature at which condensation sets in decreases with increasing Gauss-Bonnet coupling. The decrease is however stronger when taking back-reaction of the space-time into account. We observe that the critical temperature becomes very small, but stays positive for all values of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling no matter how strong the back-reaction of the space-time is.

Holographic superfluids as duals of rotating black strings

We study the breaking of an Abelian symmetry close to the horizon of an uncharged rotating Anti-de Sitter black string in 3+1 dimensions. The boundary theory living on R^2 x S^1 has no rotation, but a magnetic field that is aligned with the axis of the black string. This boundary theory decribes non-rotating (2+1)-dimensional holographic superfluids with non-vanishing superfluid velocity. We study these superfluids in the grand canonical ensemble and show that for sufficiently small angular momentum of the dual black string and sufficiently small superfluid velocity the phase transition is 2nd order, while it becomes 1st order for larger superfluid velocity. Moreover, we observe that the phase transition is always 1st order above a critical value of the angular momentum independent of the choice of the superfluid velocity.

Inflating baby-Skyrme branes in six dimensions

We consider a six dimensional brane world model, where the brane is described by a localized solution to the baby-Skyrme model extending in the extradimensions. The branes have a cosmological constant modeled by inflating four dimensional slices and we further consider a bulk cosmological constant. We construct solutions numerically and present evidences that the solutions cease to exist for large values of the brane cosmological constant in some particular case. Then we study the stability of the model by considering perturbation of the gravitational part (resp. baby skyrmion) with fixed matter fields (resp. gravitational background). Our results indicate that the perturbation equations do not admit localized solutions for certain type of perturbation. The stability analysis can be alternatively seen as leading to a particle spectrum; we give mass estimations for the baby-Skyrme perturbation and for the graviton.

Rotating black holes with equal-magnitude angular momenta in d=5 Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory

We construct rotating black hole solutions in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory in five spacetime dimensions. These black holes are asymptotically flat, and possess a regular horizon of spherical topology and two equal-magnitude angular momenta associated with two distinct planes of rotation. The action and global charges of the solutions are obtained by using the quasilocal formalism with boundary counterterms generalized for the case of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory. We discuss the general properties of these black holes and study their dependence on the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant $α$. We argue that most of the properties of the configurations are not affected by the higher derivative terms. For fixed $α$ the set of black hole solutions terminates at an extremal black hole with a regular horizon, where the Hawking temperature vanishes and the angular momenta attain their extremal values. The domain of existence of regular black hole solutions is studied. The near horizon geometry of the extremal solutions is determined by employing the entropy function formalism.

Angularly excited and interacting boson stars and Q-balls

We study angularly excited as well as interacting non-topological solitons, so-called Q-balls and their gravitating counterparts, so-called boson stars in 3+1 dimensions. Q-balls and boson stars carry a non-vanishing Noether charge and arise as solutions of complex scalar field models in a flat space-time background and coupled minimally to gravity, respectively. We present examples of interacting Q-balls that arise due to angular excitations, which are closely related to the spherical harmonics. We also construct explicit examples of rotating boson stars that interact with non-rotating boson stars. We observe that rotating boson stars tend to absorb the non-rotating ones for increasing, but reasonably small gravitational coupling. This is a new phenomenon as compared to the flat space-time limit and is related to the negative contribution of the rotation term to the energy density of the solutions. In addition, our results indicate that a system of a rotating and non-rotating boson star can become unstable if the direct interaction term in the potential is large enough. This instability is related to the appearance of ergoregions.

The effect of dark strings on semilocal strings

Dark strings have recently been suggested to exist in new models of dark matter that explain the excessive electronic production in the galaxy. We study the interaction of these dark strings with semilocal strings which are solutions of the bosonic sector of the Standard Model in the limit $\sin^2θ_{\rm w}=1$, where $θ_{\rm w}$ is the Weinberg angle. While embedded Abelian-Higgs strings exist for generic values of the coupling constants, we show that semilocal solutions with non-vanishing condensate inside the string core exist only above a critical value of the Higgs to gauge boson mass ratio when interacting with dark strings. Above this critical value, which is greater than unity, the energy per unit length of the semilocal-dark string solutions is always smaller than that of the embedded Abelian-Higgs-dark string solutions and we show that Abelian-Higgs-dark strings become unstable above this critical value. Different from the non-interacting case, we would thus expect semilocal strings to be stable for values of the Higgs to gauge boson mass ratio larger than unity. Moreover, the one-parameter family of solutions present in the non-interacting case ceases to exist when semilocal strings interact with dark strings.

Interacting Q-balls

We study non-topological solitons, so called Q-balls, which carry a non-vanishing Noether charge and arise as lump solutions of self-interacting complex scalar field models. Explicit examples of new axially symmetric non-spinning Q-ball solutions that have not been studied so far are constructed numerically. These solutions can be interpreted as angular excitations of the fundamental $Q$-balls and are related to the spherical harmonics. Correspondingly, they have higher energy and their energy densities possess two local maxima on the positive z-axis. We also study two Q-balls interacting via a potential term in (3+1) dimensions and construct examples of stationary, solitonic-like objects in (3+1)-dimensional flat space-time that consist of two interacting global scalar fields. We concentrate on configurations composed of one spinning and one non-spinning Q-ball and study the parameter-dependence of the energy and charges of the configuration. In addition, we present numerical evidence that for fixed values of the coupling constants two different types of 2-Q-ball solutions exist: solutions with defined parity, but also solutions which are asymmetric with respect to reflexion through the x-y-plane.

Regular and black hole solutions to higher order curvature Einstein--Yang-Mills--Grassmannian systems in 5 dimensions

We construct both regular and black hole spherically symmetric solutions to the original higher curvature EYM model augmented by a Grassmannian sigma model field in $d=5$ spacetime dimensions. Unlike the original model, the new model supports regular solutions in the flat space limit. We find that a peculiar singular behaviour of the solutions in the original model, persists in the case of the modified model too. A study of the solutions to the Grassmannian model in flat space is also carried out.

Spherically symmetric solutions of a (4+n)-dimensional Einstein-Yang-Mills model with cosmological constant

We construct solutions of an Einstein-Yang-Mills system including a cosmological constant in 4+n space-time dimensions, where the n-dimensional manifold associated with the extra dimensions is taken to be Ricci flat. Assuming the matter and metric fields to be independent of the n extra coordinates, a spherical symmetric Ansatz for the fields leads to a set of coupled ordinary differential equations. We find that for n > 1 only solutions with either one non-zero Higgs field or with all Higgs fields constant and zero gauge fields exist. We give the analytic solutions available in this model. These are ``embedded'' abelian solutions with a diverging size of the manifold associated with the extra n dimensions. Depending on the choice of parameters, these latter solutions either represent naked singularities or they possess a single horizon. We also present solutions of the effective 4-dimensional Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs-dilaton model, where the higher dimensional cosmological constant induces a Liouville-type potential. The solutions are non-abelian solutions with diverging Higgs fields, which exist only up to a maximal value of the cosmological constant.

Spherically symmetric Yang-Mills solutions in a (4+n)- dimensional space-time

We consider the Einstein-Yang-Mills Lagrangian in a (4+n)-dimensional space-time. Assuming the matter and metric fields to be independent of the n extra coordinates, a spherical symmetric Ansatz for the fields leads to a set of coupled ordinary differential equations. We find that for n > 1 only solutions with either one non-zero Higgs field or with all Higgs fields constant exist. We construct the analytic solutions which fulfill this conditions for arbitrary n, namely the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton solutions. We also present generic solutions of the effective 4-dimensional Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs-dilaton model, which possesses n Higgs triplets coupled in a specific way to n independent dilaton fields. These solutions are the abelian Einstein-Maxwell- dilaton solutions and analytic non-abelian solutions, which have diverging Higgs fields. In addition, we construct numerically asymptotically flat and finite energy solutions for n=2.

de Sitter/ Anti-de Sitter global monopoles

We consider global monopoles in asymptotic de Sitter/ Anti- de Sitter space-time. We present the by our numerical analysis confirmed asymptotic behaviour of the metric and Goldstone field functions. We find that the appearance of horizons in this model depends strongly on the sign and value of the cosmological constant as well as on the value of the gravitational coupling. In Anti-de Sitter (AdS) space, we find that for a fixed value of the cosmological constant, global monopoles without horizons exist only up to a critical value of the gravitational coupling. Moreover, we observe (in contrast to another recent study) that the introduction of a cosmological constant can NOT render a positive mass of the global monopole.

Gravitating SU(N) Monopoles from Harmonic maps

Spherically symmetric solutions of the SU(N) Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs system are constructed using the harmonic map ansatz. The problem reduces to solving a set of ordinary differential equations for the appropriate profile functions. In the SU(2) case, we recover the equations studied in great detail previously, while for the SU(N) (N > 2) case we find new solutions. In the SU(3) case we see that our expressions are the gravitating analogues of the solutions obtained through the SO(3) embedding into SU(2).

Spherically symmetric Yang-Mills solutions in a 5-dimensional (Anti-) de Sitter space-time

We consider an Einstein-Yang-Mills Lagrangian in a five dimensional space-time including a cosmological constant. Assuming all fields to be independent of the extra coordinate, a dimensional reduction leads to an effective (3+1)-dimensional Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs-dilaton model where the cosmological constant induces a Liouville potential in the dilaton field. We construct spherically symmetric solutions analytically in specific limits and study the generic solutions for vanishing dilaton coupling numerically. We find that in this latter case the solutions bifurcate with the branch of (Anti-) de Sitter-Reissner-Nordstrom ((A)dSRN) solutions.

SU(2) gauged Skyrme-monopoles in scalar-tensor gravity

Considering a Skyrme model with a peculiar gauging of the symmetry, monopole-like solutions exist through a topological lower bound. However, it was recently shown that these objects cannot form bound states in the limit of vanishing Skyrme coupling. Here we consider these monopoles in scalar-tensor gravity. A numerical study of the equations reveals that neither the coupling to gravity nor to the scalar dilaton nor to dilaton-gravity leads to bound multimonopole states.

SU(5) monopoles and non-abelian black holes

We construct spherically and axially symmetric monopoles in SU(5) Yang-Mills-Higgs theory both in flat and curved space as well as spherical and axial non-abelian, ''hairy'' black holes. We find that in analogy to the SU(2) case, the flat space monopoles are either non-interacting (in the BPS limit) or repelling. In curved space, however, gravity is able to overcome the repulsion for suitable choices of the Higgs coupling constants and the gravitational coupling. In addition, we confirm that indeed all qualitative features of (gravitating) SU(2) monopoles are found as well in the SU(5) case. For the non-abelian black holes, we compare the behaviour of the solutions in the BPS limit with that for non-vanishing Higgs self-coupling constants.

Monopoles and dyons in SO(3) gauged Skyrme models

Three dimensional SO(3) gauged Skyrme models characterised by specific potentials imposing special asymptotic values on the chiral field are considered. These models are shown to support finite energy solutions with nonvanishing magnetic and electrix flux, whose energies are bounded from below by two distinct charges - the magnetic (monopole) charge and a non-integer version of the Baryon charge. Unit magnetic charge solutions are constructed numerically and their properties characterised by the chosen asymptotics and the Skyrme coupling are studied. For a particular value of the chosen asymptotics, charge-2 axially symmetric solutions are also constructed and the attractive nature of the like-monopoles of this system are exhibited. As an indication towards the possible existence of large clumps of monopoles, some consideration is given to axially symmetric monopoles of charges-2,3,4.

On Axially Symmetric Solutions in the Electroweak Theory

We present the general ansatz, the energy density and the Chern-Simons charge for static axially symmetric configurations in the bosonic sector of the electroweak theory. Containing the sphaleron, the multisphalerons and the sphaleron-antisphaleron pair at finite mixing angle, the ansatz further allows the construction of the sphaleron and multisphaleron barriers and of the bisphalerons at finite mixing angle. We conjecture that further solutions exist.

Sphalerons at finite temperature

We construct the sphaleron for several temperature dependent effective potentials. We determine the sphaleron energy as a function of temperature and demonstrate that the sphaleron energy at a given temperature $T$ is well approximated by the sphaleron energy at temperature zero scaled by the ratio of the vacuum expectation values of the Higgs field at temperatures $T$ and zero. We address the cosmological upper bound on the Higgs mass.
