A hyperbolic analogue of the Atiyah-Hitchin manifold

The Atiyah-Hitchin manifold is the moduli space of parity inversion symmetric charge two SU(2) monopoles in Euclidean space. Here a hyperbolic analogue is presented, by calculating the boundary metric on the moduli space of parity inversion symmetric charge two SU(2) monopoles in hyperbolic space. The calculation of the metric is performed using a twistor description of the moduli space and the result is presented in terms of standard elliptic integrals.

Boundary metrics on soliton moduli spaces

The geodesic approximation is a powerful method for studying the dynamics of BPS solitons. However, there are systems, such as BPS monopoles in three-dimensional hyperbolic space, where this approach is not applicable because the moduli space metric defined by the kinetic energy is not finite. In the case of hyperbolic monopoles, an alternative metric has been defined using the abelian connection on the sphere at infinity, but its relation to the dynamics of hyperbolic monopoles is unclear. Here this metric is placed in a more general context of boundary metrics on soliton moduli spaces. Examples are studied in systems in one and two space dimensions, where it is much easier to compare the results with simulations of the full nonlinear field theory dynamics. It is found that geodesics of the boundary metric provide a reasonable description of soliton dynamics.

Colonies of threaded rings in excitable media

A thring is a recent addition to the zoo of spiral wave phenomena found in excitable media and consists of a scroll ring that is threaded by a pair of counter-rotating scroll waves. This arrangement behaves like a particle that swims through the medium. Here, we present the first results on the dynamics, interaction and collective behaviour of several thrings via numerical simulation of the reaction-diffusion equations that model thrings created in chemical experiments. We reveal an attraction between two thrings that leads to a stable bound pair that thwarts their individual locomotion. Furthermore, such a pair emits waves at a higher frequency than a single thring, which protects the pair from the advances of any other thring and rules out the formation of a triplet bound state. As a result, the long-term evolution of a colony of thrings ultimately yields an unusual frozen nonequilibrium state consisting of a collection of pairs accompanied by isolated thrings that are inhibited from further motion by the waves emanating from the pairs.

Untangling knots via reaction-diffusion dynamics of vortex strings

We introduce and illustrate a new approach to the unknotting problem via the dynamics of vortex strings in a nonlinear partial differential equation of reaction-diffusion type. To untangle a given knot, a Biot-Savart construction is used to initialize the knot as a vortex string in the FitzHugh-Nagumo equation. Remarkably, we find that the subsequent evolution preserves the topology of the knot and can untangle an unknot into a circle. Illustrative test case examples are presented, including the untangling of a hard unknot known as the culprit. Our approach to the unknotting problem has two novel features, in that it applies field theory rather than particle mechanics and uses reaction-diffusion dynamics in place of energy minimization.

Magnetic bags in hyperbolic space

A magnetic bag is an abelian approximation to a large number of coincident SU(2) BPS monopoles. In this paper we consider magnetic bags in hyperbolic space and derive their Nahm transform from the large charge limit of the discrete Nahm equation for hyperbolic monopoles. An advantage of studying magnetic bags in hyperbolic space, rather than Euclidean space, is that a range of exact charge N hyperbolic monopoles can be constructed, for arbitrarily large values of N, and compared with the magnetic bag approximation. We show that a particular magnetic bag (the magnetic disc) provides a good description of the axially symmetric N-monopole. However, an abelian magnetic bag is not a good approximation to a roughly spherical N-monopole that has more than N zeros of the Higgs field. We introduce an extension of the magnetic bag that does provide a good approximation to such monopoles and involves a spherical non-abelian interior for the bag, in addition to the conventional abelian exterior.

The dynamics of aloof baby Skyrmions

The aloof baby Skyrme model is a (2+1)-dimensional theory with solitons that are lightly bound. It is a low-dimensional analogue of a similar Skyrme model in (3+1)-dimensions, where the lightly bound solitons have binding energies comparable to nuclei. A previous study of static solitons in the aloof baby Skyrme model revealed that multi-soliton bound states have a cluster structure, with constituents that preserve their individual identities due to the short-range repulsion and long-range attraction between solitons. Furthermore, there are many different local energy minima that are all well-described by a simple binary species particle model. In this paper we present the first results on soliton dynamics in the aloof baby Skyrme model. Numerical field theory simulations reveal that the lightly bound cluster structure results in a variety of exotic soliton scattering events that are novel in comparison to standard Skyrmion scattering. A dynamical version of the binary species point particle model is shown to provide a good qualitative description of the dynamics.

Aloof Baby Skyrmions

We show that a suitable choice for the potential term in the two-dimensional baby Skyrme model yields solitons that have a short-range repulsion and a long-range attraction. The solitons are therefore aloof, in the sense that static multi-soliton bound states have constituents that preserve their individual identities and are sufficiently far apart that tail interactions yield small binding energies. The static multi-soliton solutions are found to have a cluster structure that is reproduced by a simple binary species particle model. In the standard three-dimensional Skyrme model of nuclei, solitons are too tightly bound and are often too symmetric, due to symmetry enhancement as solitons coalesce to form bound states. The aloof baby Skyrmion results endorse a way to resolve these issues and provides motivation for a detailed study of the related three-dimensional version of the Skyrme model.

Hyperbolic monopoles, JNR data and spectral curves

A large class of explicit hyperbolic monopole solutions can be obtained from JNR instanton data, if the curvature of hyperbolic space is suitably tuned. Here we provide explicit formulae for both the monopole spectral curve and its rational map in terms of JNR data. Examples with platonic symmetry are presented, together with some one-parameter families with cyclic and dihedral symmetries. These families include hyperbolic analogues of geodesics that describe symmetric monopole scatterings in Euclidean space and we illustrate the results with energy density isosurfaces. There is a metric on the moduli space of hyperbolic monopoles, defined using the abelian connection on the boundary of hyperbolic space, and we provide a simple integral formula for this metric on the space of JNR data.

Leapfrogging vortex rings in the Landau-Lifshitz equation

Vortex rings are ubiquitous in fluids, with smoke rings being a familiar example. The interaction of multiple vortex rings produces complex dynamical behaviour, such as the leapfrogging motion first analysed by Helmholtz more than a century and a half ago. Here we report on numerical investigations of vortex ring dynamics in a different setting from fluids, namely, as solutions of the Landau-Lifshitz equation that models the evolution of the local magnetization in a ferromagnetic medium. We present the results of the first study on the dynamics of interacting magnetic vortex rings and provide a novel link between fluids and magnetism, by showing that a range of phenomena familiar in fluids are reproduced in ferromagnets. This includes the leapfrogging motion of a pair of vortex rings and evidence for the chaotic dynamics of a trio of rings.

A low-dimensional analogue of holographic baryons

Baryons in holographic QCD correspond to topological solitons in the bulk. The most prominent example is the Sakai-Sugimoto model, where the bulk soliton in the five-dimensional spacetime of AdS-type can be approximated by the flat space self-dual Yang-Mills instanton with a small size. Recently, the validity of this approximation has been verified by comparison with the numerical field theory solution. However, multi-solitons and solitons with finite density are currently beyond numerical field theory computations. Various approximations have been applied to investigate these important issues and have led to proposals for finite density configurations that include dyonic salt and baryonic popcorn. Here we introduce and investigate a low-dimensional analogue of the Sakai-Sugimoto model, in which the bulk soliton can be approximated by a flat space sigma model instanton. The bulk theory is a baby Skyrme model in a three-dimensional spacetime with negative curvature. The advantage of the lower-dimensional theory is that numerical simulations of multi-solitons and finite density solutions can be performed and compared with flat space instanton approximations. In particular, analogues of dyonic salt and baryonic popcorn configurations are found and analysed.

ADHM Polytopes

We discuss the construction of ADHM data for Yang-Mills instantons with the symmetries of the regular polytopes in four dimensions. We show that the case of the pentatope can be studied using a simple modification of the approach previously developed for platonic data. For the remaining polytopes, we describe a framework in which the building blocks of the ADHM data correspond to the edges in the extended Dynkin diagram that arises via the McKay correspondence. These building blocks are then assembled into ADHM data through the identification of pairs of commuting representations of the associated binary polyhedral group. We illustrate our procedure by the construction of ADHM data associated with the pentatope, the hyperoctahedron and the 24-cell, with instanton charges 4, 7 and 23, respectively. Furthermore, we show that within our framework these are the lowest possible charges with these symmetries. Plots of topological charge densities are presented that confirm the polytope structure and the relation to JNR instanton data is clarified.

Platonic hyperbolic monopoles

We construct a number of explicit examples of hyperbolic monopoles, with various charges and often with some platonic symmetry. The fields are obtained from instanton data in four-dimensional Euclidean space that are invariant under a circle action, and in most cases the monopole charge is equal to the instanton charge. A key ingredient is the identification of a new set of constraints on ADHM instanton data that are sufficient to ensure the circle invariance. Unlike for Euclidean monopoles, the formulae for the squared Higgs field magnitude in the examples we construct are rational functions of the coordinates. Using these formulae, we compute and illustrate the energy density of the monopoles. We also prove, for particular monopoles, that the number of zeros of the Higgs field is greater than the monopole charge, confirming numerical results established earlier for Euclidean monopoles. We also present some one-parameter families of monopoles analogous to known scattering events for Euclidean monopoles within the geodesic approximation.

The dynamics of domain wall Skyrmions

It has recently been shown that Skyrmions with a fixed size can exist in theories without a Skyrme term, providing the Skyrmion is located on a domain wall. Here we numerically compute domain wall Skyrmions of this type, in a (2+1)-dimensional O(3) sigma model with a potential term. Moreover, we investigate Skyrmion dynamics, to study both Skyrmion stability and the scattering of multi-Skyrmions. We demonstrate that scattering events in which both Skyrmions remain on the same domain wall are effectively one-dimensional, and at low speeds are well-approximated by kink scattering in the integrable sine-Gordon model. However, more exotic fully two-dimensional scatterings are also presented, in which Skyrmions that are initially on different domain walls emerge on the same domain wall.

The Sakai-Sugimoto soliton

The Sakai-Sugimoto model is the preeminent example of a string theory description of holographic QCD, in which baryons correspond to topological solitons in the bulk. Here we investigate the validity of various approximations of the Sakai-Sugimoto soliton that are used widely to study the properties of holographic baryons. These approximations include the flat space self-dual instanton, a linear expansion in terms of eigenfunctions in the holographic direction and an asymptotic power series at large radius. These different approaches have produced contradictory results in the literature regarding properties of the baryon, such as relations for the electromagnetic form factors. Here we determine the regions of validity of these various approximations and show how to relate different approximations in contiguous regions of applicability. This analysis clarifies the source of the contradictory results in the literature and resolves some outstanding issues, including the use of the flat space self-dual instanton, the detailed properties of the asymptotic soliton tail, and the role of the UV cutoff introduced in previous investigations. A consequence of our analysis is the discovery of a new large scale, that grows logarithmically with the 't Hooft coupling, at which the soliton fields enter a nonlinear regime. Finally, we provide the first numerical computation of the Sakai-Sugimoto soliton and demonstrate that the numerical results support our analysis.

Hyperbolic vortices with large magnetic flux

There has been some recent interest in the study of non-abelian BPS monopoles in the limit of large magnetic charge. Most investigations have used a magnetic bag approximation, in which spherical symmetry is assumed within an abelian description. In particular, this approach has been used to suggest the existence of two types of magnetic bag, with differing distributions of the zeros of the Higgs field, together with multi-layer structures, containing several magnetic bags. This paper is concerned with the analogous situation of abelian BPS vortices in the hyperbolic plane, in the limit of large magnetic flux. This system has the advantage that explicit exact solutions can be obtained and compared with a magnetic bag approximation. Exact BPS vortex solutions are presented that are analogous to the two types of magnetic bags predicted for BPS monopoles and it is shown that these structures can be combined to produce exact multi-layer solutions.

Broken Baby Skyrmions

The baby Skyrme model is a (2+1)-dimensional analogue of the Skyrme model, in which baryons are described by topological solitons. In this paper we introduce a version of the baby Skyrme model in which the global O(3) symmetry is broken to the dihedral group D_N. It is found that the single soliton in this theory is composed of N partons, that are topologically confined. The case N=3 is studied in some detail and multi-soliton solutions are computed. These soliton solutions are related to polyiamonds, which are plane figures composed of equilateral triangles joined by common edges. It is shown that the solitons may be viewed as pieces of a doubly periodic soliton lattice. An alternative model with D_3 symmetry is also introduced, which has an exact explicit soliton lattice solution. Soliton solutions are computed and compared in the two D_3 theories. Some comments are made regarding the extension of these ideas to the Skyrme model.

Monopoles in AdS

Applications to holographic theories have led to some recent interest in magnetic monopoles in four-dimensional Anti-de Sitter spacetime. This paper is concerned with a study of these monopoles, using both analytic and numerical methods. An approximation is introduced in which the fields of a charge N monopole are explicitly given in terms of a degree N rational map. Within this approximation, it is shown that the minimal energy monopole of charge N has the same symmetry as the minimal energy Skyrmion with baryon number N in Minkowski spacetime. Beyond charge two the minimal energy monopole has only a discrete symmetry, which is often Platonic. The rational map approximation provides an upper bound on the monopole energy and may be viewed as a smooth non-abelian refinement of the magnetic bag approximation, to which it reverts under some additional approximations. The analytic results are supported by numerical solutions obtained from simulations of the non-abelian field theory. A similar analysis is performed on the monopole wall that emerges in the large N limit, to reveal a hexagonal lattice as the minimal energy architecture.

Skyrmions in a truncated BPS theory

Recently, it has been shown that (4+1)-dimensional Yang-Mills theory may be written as a (3+1)-dimensional BPS Skyrme model, in which the Skyrme field is coupled to an infinite tower of vector mesons. Truncating this tower to a single vector meson yields an extension of the standard Skyrme model to a theory of pions coupled to the rho meson, with the significant simplification that no additional free parameters are introduced. The present paper is concerned with this truncated theory and results are presented for Skyrmions with baryon numbers one to four. The approach involves the use of an extended version of the Atiyah-Manton construction, in which the Skyrme field is approximated by the holonomy of a Yang-Mills instanton. It is found that the coupling to the rho meson significantly reduces Skyrmion binding energies, to produce an improved comparison with the experimental data on nuclei. A truncation that includes both a vector and an axial vector meson is also investigated, providing a model of pions, the rho meson and the a1 meson. Binding energies are further reduced by the inclusion of this additional meson, shifting the Skyrmion energies a little closer to those of nuclei. Fixing the energy unit by equating the energy of the baryon number four Skyrmion to the He-4 mass, yields masses for all lower baryon numbers that are within 20 MeV of the experimental values, which is an error that is four times smaller than in the standard Skyrme model.

Gauss-Bonnet Holographic Superconductors

We study holographic superconductors in five dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity both numerically and analytically. We find the critical temperature of the superconductor decreases as backreaction is increased, although the effect of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling is more subtle: the critical temperature first decreases then increases as the coupling tends towards the Chern-Simons value in a backreaction dependent fashion. We compute the conductivity of the system, finding the energy gap, and show that the effect of both backreaction and higher curvature is to increase the gap ratio $ω_g/T_c$, thus there is no universal relation for these superconductors.

Hopf solitons and elastic rods

Hopf solitons in the Skyrme-Faddeev model are string-like topological solitons classified by the integer-valued Hopf charge. In this paper we introduce an approximate description of Hopf solitons in terms of elastic rods. The general form of the elastic rod energy is derived from the field theory energy and is found to be an extension of the classical Kirchhoff rod energy. Using a minimal extension of the Kirchhoff energy, it is shown that a simple elastic rod model can reproduce many of the qualitative features of Hopf solitons in the Skyrme-Faddeev model. Features that are captured by the model include the buckling of the charge three solution, the formation of links at charges five and six, and the minimal energy trefoil knot at charge seven.

Hopf solitons in the Nicole model

The Nicole model is a conformal field theory in three-dimensional space. It has topological soliton solutions classified by the integer-valued Hopf charge, and all currently known solitons are axially symmetric. A volume-preserving flow is used to numerically construct soliton solutions for all Hopf charges from one to eight. It is found that the known axially symmetric solutions are unstable for Hopf charges greater than two and new lower energy solutions are obtained that include knots and links. A comparison with the Skyrme-Faddeev model suggests many universal features, though there are some differences in the link types obtained in the two theories.

Skyrmions, instantons and holography

Some time ago, Atiyah and Manton observed that computing the holonomy of Yang-Mills instantons yields good approximations to static Skyrmion solutions of the Skyrme model. This paper provides an extension and explanation of this result, by proving that instanton holonomies produce exact solutions of a BPS Skyrme model, in which the Skyrme field is coupled to a tower of vector mesons. Neglecting any (or indeed all) of the vector mesons breaks the scale invariance and removes the BPS property of the Skyrmions. However, it is shown that a truncation of the BPS Skyrme theory, in which only the first vector meson is included, already moves the Skyrme model significantly closer to the BPS system. A theory that is close to a BPS system is required to reproduce the experimental data on binding energies of nuclei. A zero-mode quantization of the Skyrmion is performed in the truncated BPS theory and the results are compared to the physical properties of the nucleon. The approach is an analogue in five-dimensional Minkowski spacetime of a recent holographic construction of a Skyrme model by Sakai and Sugimoto, based on a string theory derivation of a Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theory in a curved five-dimensional spacetime.

Domain Walls and Double Bubbles

We study configurations of intersecting domain walls in a Wess-Zumino model with three vacua. We introduce a volume-preserving flow and show that its static solutions are configurations of intersecting domain walls that form double bubbles, that is, minimal area surfaces which enclose and separate two prescribed volumes. To illustrate this field theory approach to double bubbles, we use domain walls to reconstruct the phase diagram for double bubbles in the flat square two-torus and also construct all known examples of double bubbles in the flat cubic three-torus.

Skyrmions and the pion mass

We present numerical evidence that suggests the introduction of a non-zero pion mass might dramatically affect the structure of minimal energy Skyrmions. It appears that the shell-like Skyrmions which are the minima when the pions are massless can fail to be minimal energy bound states for particular baryon numbers, with a strong dependence upon the value of the pion mass. The effects of a pion mass may include the replacement of shell-like configurations with crystal chunks and the loss of shell-like bound states with baryon numbers five and eight; which is in agreement with expectations based on real nuclei.

Domain wall networks on solitons

Domain wall networks on the surface of a soliton are studied in a simple theory. It consists of two complex scalar fields, in (3+1)-dimensions, with a global U(1) x Z_n symmetry, where n>2. Solutions are computed numerically in which one of the fields forms a Q-ball and the other field forms a network of domain walls localized on the surface of the Q-ball. Examples are presented in which the domain walls lie along the edges of a spherical polyhedron, forming junctions at its vertices. It is explained why only a small restricted class of polyhedra can arise as domain wall networks.

Monopoles and Harmonic Maps

Recently Jarvis has proved a correspondence between SU(N) monopoles and rational maps of the Riemann sphere into flag manifolds. Furthermore, he has outlined a construction to obtain the monopole fields from the rational map. In this paper we examine this construction in some detail and provide explicit examples for spherically symmetric SU(N) monopoles with various symmetry breakings. In particular we show how to obtain these monopoles from harmonic maps into complex projective spaces. The approach extends in a natural way to monopoles in hyperbolic space and we use it to construct new spherically symmetric SU(N) hyperbolic monopoles.
