Applications of Grassmannian flows to integrable systems

We show how many classes of partial differential systems with local and nonlocal nonlinearities are linearisable in the sense that they are realisable as Fredholm Grassmannian flows. In other words, time-evolutionary solutions to such systems can be constructed from solutions to the corresponding underlying linear partial differential system, by solving a linear Fredholm equation. For example, it is well-known that solutions to classical integrable partial differential systems can be generated by solving a corresponding linear partial differential system for the scattering data and then solving the linear Fredholm (or Volterra) integral equation known as the Gel'fand-Levitan-Marchenko equation. In this paper and in a companion paper, Doikou et al. [DMSW:graphflows], we both, survey the classes of nonlinear systems that are realisable as Fredholm Grassmannian flows, and present new example applications of such flows. We also demonstrate the usefulness of such a representation. Herein we extend the work of Poppe and demonstrate how solution flows of the non-commutative potential Korteweg de Vries and nonlinear Schrodinger systems are examples of such Grassmannian flows. In the companion paper we use this Grassmannian flow approach as well as an extension to nonlinear graph flows, to solve Smoluchowski coagulation and related equations.

From Braces to Hecke algebras & Quantum Groups

We examine links between the theory of braces and set theoretical solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation, and fundamental concepts from the theory of quantum integrable systems. More precisely, we make connections with Hecke algebras and we identify new quantum groups associated to set-theoretic solutions coming from braces. We also construct a novel class of quantum discrete integrable systems and we derive symmetries for the corresponding periodic transfer matrices.

Quasi-bialgebras from set-theoretic type solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation

We examine classes of quantum algebras emerging from involutive, non-degenerate set-theoretic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation and their q-analogues. After providing some universal results on quasi-bialgebras and admissible Drinfeld twists we show that the quantum algebras produced from set-theoretic solutions and their q-analogues are in fact quasi-triangular quasi-bialgebras. Specific illustrative examples compatible with our generic findings are worked out. In the q-deformed case of set-theoretic solutions we also construct admissible Drinfeld twists similar to the set-theoretic ones, subject to certain extra constraints dictated by the q-deformation. These findings greatly generalise recent relevant results on set theoretic solutions and their q-deformed analogues.

An algebraic approach to discrete time integrability

We propose the systematic construction of classical and quantum two dimensional space-time lattices primarily based on algebraic considerations, i.e. on the existence of associated r-matrices and underlying spatial and temporal classical and quantum algebras. This is a novel construction that leads to the derivation of fully discrete integrable systems governed by sets of consistent integrable non-linear space-time difference equations. To illustrate the proposed methodology, we derive two versions of the fully discrete non-linear Schrodinger type system. The first one is based on the existence of a rational r-matrix, whereas the second one is the fully discrete Ablowitz-Ladik model and is associated to a trigonometric r-matrix. The Darboux-dressing method is also applied for the first discretization scheme, mostly as a consistency check, and solitonic as well as general solutions, in terms of solutions of the fully discrete heat equation, are also derived. The quantization of the fully discrete systems is then quite natural in this context and the two dimensional quantum lattice is thus also examined.

Discretizations of the generalized AKNS scheme

We consider space discretizations of the matrix Zakharov-Shabat AKNS scheme, in particular the discrete matrix non-linear Scrhrödinger (DNLS) model, and the matrix generalization of the Ablowitz-Ladik (AL) model, which is the more widely acknowledged discretization. We focus on the derivation of solutions via local Darboux transforms for both discretizations, and we derive novel solutions via generic solutions of the associated discrete linear equations. The continuum analogue is also discussed, and as an example we identify solutions of the matrix NLS equation in terms of the heat kernel. In this frame we also derive a discretization of the Burgers equation via the analogue of the Cole-Hopf transform. Using the basic Darboux transforms for each scheme we identify both matrix DNLS-like and AL hierarchies, i.e. we extract the associated Lax pairs, via the dressing process. We also discuss the global Darboux transform, which is the discrete analogue of the integral transform, through the discrete Gelfand-Levitan-Marchenko (GLM) equation. The derivation of the discrete matrix GLM equation and associated solutions are also presented together with explicit linearizations. Particular emphasis is given in the discretization schemes, i.e. forward/backward in the discrete matrix DNLS scheme versus symmetric in the discrete matrix AL model.

Solitons: conservation laws & dressing methods

We review some of the fundamental notions associated to the theory of solitons. More precisely, we focus on the issue of conservation laws via the existence of the Lax pair and also on methods that provide solutions to partial or ordinary differential equations that are associated to discrete or continuous integrable systems. The Riccati equation associated to a given continuous integrable system is also solved and hence suitable conserved quantities are derived. The notion of the Darboux-Backlund transformation is introduced and employed in order to obtain soliton solutions for specific examples of integrable equations. The Zakharov-Shabat dressing scheme and the Gelfand-Levitan-Marchenko equation are also introduced. Via this method generic solutions are produced, and integrable hierarchies are explicitly derived. Various discrete and continuous integrable models are employed as examples such as the Toda chain, the discrete non-linear Schrodinger model, the Korteweg-de Vries and non-linear Schrodinger equations as well as the sine-Gordon and Liouville models.

The quantum auxiliary linear problem & Darboux-Backlund transformations

We explore the notion of the quantum auxiliary linear problem and the associated problem of quantum Backlund transformations (BT). In this context we systematically construct the analogue of the classical formula that provides the whole hierarchy of the time components of Lax pairs at the quantum level for both closed and open integrable lattice models. The generic time evolution operator formula is particularly interesting and novel at the quantum level when dealing with systems with open boundary conditions. In the same frame we show that the reflection K-matrix can also be viewed as a particular type of BT, fixed at the boundaries of the system. The q-oscillator (q-boson) model, a variant of the Ablowitz-Ladik model, is then employed as a paradigm to illustrate the method. Particular emphasis is given to the time part of the quantum BT as possible connections and applications to the problem of quantum quenches as well as the time evolution of local quantum impurities are evident. A discussion on the use of Bethe states as well as coherent states and the path integral formulation for the study of the time evolution is also presented.

Classical integrable defects as quasi Bäcklund transformations

We consider the algebraic setting of classical defects in discrete and continuous integrable theories. We derive the "equations of motion" on the defect point via the space-like and time-like description. We then exploit the structural similarity of these equations with the discrete and continuous Backlund transformations. And although these equations are similar they are not exactly the same to the Backlund transformations. We also consider specific examples of integrable models to demonstrate our construction, i.e. the Toda chain and the sine-Gordon model. The equations of the time (space) evolution of the defect (discontinuity) degrees of freedom for these models are explicitly derived.

A classical variant of the vertex algebra & the auxiliary linear problem

We propose a classical analogue of the vertex algebra in the context of classical integrable field theories. We use this fundamental notion to describe the auxiliary function of the linear auxiliary problem as a classical vertex operator. Then using the underlying algebra satisfied by the auxiliary function together with the linear auxiliary problem we identify the local integrals of motion, which by construction are in involution. The time components of the Lax pair are also identified in terms of the classical vertex operators. Systems in the presence of point like defects as well as systems on the semi-infinite line are investigated. Specific examples associated to the classical Yangian and twisted Yangian are also presented.

Jumps and twists in affine Toda field theories

The concept of point-like "jump" defects is investigated in the context of affine Toda field theories. The Hamiltonian formulation is employed for the analysis of the problem. The issue is also addressed when integrable boundary conditions ruled by the classical twisted Yangian are present. In both periodic and boundary cases explicit expressions of conserved quantities as well as the relevant Lax pairs and sewing conditions are extracted. It is also observed that in the case of the twisted Yangian the bulk behavior is not affected by the presence of the boundaries.

Lagrangian and Hamiltonian structures in an integrable hierarchy and space-time duality

We define and illustrate the novel notion of dual integrable hierarchies, on the example of the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) hierarchy. For each integrable nonlinear evolution equation (NLEE) in the hierarchy, dual integrable structures are characterized by the fact that the zero-curvature representation of the NLEE can be realized by two Hamiltonian formulations stemming from two distinct choices of the configuration space, yielding two inequivalent Poisson structures on the corresponding phase space and two distinct Hamiltonians. This is fundamentally different from the standard bi-Hamiltonian or generally multitime structure. The first formulation chooses purely space-dependent fields as configuration space; it yields the standard Poisson structure for NLS. The other one is new: it chooses purely time-dependent fields as configuration space and yields a different Poisson structure at each level of the hierarchy. The corresponding NLEE becomes a {\it space} evolution equation. We emphasize the role of the Lagrangian formulation as a unifying framework for deriving both Poisson structures, using ideas from covariant field theory. One of our main results is to show that the two matrices of the Lax pair satisfy the same form of ultralocal Poisson algebra (up to a sign) characterized by an $r$-matrix structure, whereas traditionally only one of them is involved in the classical $r$-matrix method. We construct explicit dual hierarchies of Hamiltonians, and Lax representations of the triggered dynamics, from the monodromy matrices of either Lax matrix. An appealing procedure to build a multi-dimensional lattice of Lax pair, through successive uses of the dual Poisson structures, is briefly introduced.

Lax pair formulation in the simultaneous presence of boundaries and defects

Inspired by recent results on the effect of integrable boundary conditions on the bulk behavior of an integrable system, and in particular on the behavior of an existing defect we systematically formulate the Lax pairs in the simultaneous presence of integrable boundaries and defects. The respective sewing conditions as well as the relevant equations of motion on the defect point are accordingly extracted. We consider a specific prototype i.e. the vector non-linear Schrödinger (NLS) model to exemplify our construction. This model displays a highly non-trivial behavior and allows the existence of two distinct types of boundary conditions based on the reflection algebra or the twisted Yangian.

Scattering matrices in the sl(3) twisted Yangian

A quantum spin chain with non-conventional boundary conditions is studied. The distinct nature of these boundary conditions arises from the conversion of a soliton to an anti-soliton after being reflected to the boundary, hence the appellation soliton non-preserving boundary conditions. We focus on the simplest non-trivial case of this class of models based on the twisted Yangian quadratic algebra. Our computations are performed through the Bethe ansatz equations in the thermodynamic limit. We formulate a suitable quantization condition describing the scattering process and proceed with explicitly determining the bulk and boundary scattering amplitudes. The energy and quantum numbers of the low lying excitations are also derived.

Classical impurities associated to high rank algebras

Classical integrable impurities associated to high rank (gl_N) algebras are investigated. A particular prototype i.e. the vector non-linear Schrödinger (NLS) model is chosen as an example. A systematic construction of local integrals of motion as well as the time components of the corresponding Lax pairs is presented based on the underlying classical algebra. Suitable gluing conditions compatible with integrability are also extracted. The defect contribution is also examined in the case where non-trivial integrable conditions are implemented. It turns out that the integrable boundaries may drastically alter the bulk behavior, and in particular the defect contribution.

Transmission amplitudes from Bethe ansatz equations

We consider the Heisenberg spin chain in the presence of integrable spin defects. Using the Bethe ansatz methodology, we extract the associated transmission amplitudes, that describe the interaction between the particle-like excitations displayed by the models and the spin impurity. In the attractive regime of the XXZ model, we also derive the breather's transmission amplitude. We compare our findings with earlier relevant results in the context of the sine-Gordon model.

Transmission matrices in gl(N) & U_q(gl(N)) quantum spin chains

The gl(N) and U_q(gl(N)) quantum spin chains in the presence of integrable spin impurities are considered. Within the Bethe ansatz formulation, we derive the associated transmission amplitudes, and the corresponding transmission matrices -representations of the underlying quadratic algebra- that physically describe the interaction between the various particle-like excitations displayed by these models and the spin impurity.

Type-I integrable quantum impurities in the Heisenberg model

Type-I quantum impurities are investigated in the context of the integrable Heisenberg model. This type of defects is associated to the (q)-harmonic oscillator algebra. The transmission matrices associated to this particular type of defects are computed via the Bethe ansatz methodology for the XXX model, as well as for the critical and non-critical XXZ spin chain. In the attractive regime of the critical XXZ spin chain the transmission amplitudes for the breathers are also identified.

Liouville integrable defects: the non-linear Schrodinger paradigm

A systematic approach to Liouville integrable defects is proposed, based on an underlying Poisson algebraic structure. The non-linear Schrodinger model in the presence of a single particle-like defect is investigated through this algebraic approach. Local integrals of motions are constructed as well as the time components of the corresponding Lax pairs. Continuity conditions imposed upon the time components of the Lax pair to all orders give rise to sewing conditions, which turn out to be compatible with the hierarchy of charges in involution. Coincidence of our results with the continuum limit of the discrete expressions obtained in earlier works further confirms our approach.

Selected Topics in Classical Integrability

Basic notions regarding classical integrable systems are reviewed. An algebraic description of the classical integrable models together with the zero curvature condition description is presented. The classical r-matrix approach for discrete and continuum classical integrable models is introduced. Using this framework the associated classical integrals of motion and the corresponding Lax pair are extracted based on algebraic considerations. Our attention is restricted to classical discrete and continuum integrable systems with periodic boundary conditions. Typical examples of discrete (Toda chain, discrete NLS model) and continuum integrable models (NLS, sine-Gordon models and affine Toda field theories) are also discussed.

Sigma models in the presence of dynamical point-like defects

Point-like Liouville integrable dynamical defects are introduced in the context of the Landau-Lifshitz and Principal Chiral (Faddeev-Reshetikhin) models. Based primarily on the underlying quadratic algebra we identify the first local integrals of motion, the associated Lax pairs as well as the relevant sewing conditions around the defect point. The involution of the integrals of motion is shown taking into account the sewing conditions.

Solutions of the Generic Non-Compact Weyl Equation

In this paper, solutions of the generic non-compact Weyl equation are obtained. In particular, by identifying a suitable similarity transformation and introducing a non-trivial change of variables we are able to implement azimuthal dependence on the solutions of the diagonal non-compact Weyl equation. We also discuss some open questions related to the construction of infinite BPS monopole configurations.

The sine-Gordon model with integrable defects revisited

Application of our algebraic approach to Liouville integrable defects is proposed for the sine-Gordon model. Integrability of the model is ensured by the underlying classical r-matrix algebra. The first local integrals of motion are identified together with the corresponding Lax pairs. Continuity conditions imposed on the time components of the entailed Lax pairs give rise to the sewing conditions on the defect point consistent with Liouville integrability.

BPS Monopoles and Open Spin Chains

We construct SU(n+1) BPS spherically symmetric monopoles with minimal symmetry breaking by solving the full Weyl equation. In this context, we explore and discuss the existence of open spin chain-like part within the Weyl equation. For instance, in the SU(3) case the relevant spin chain is the 2-site spin 1/2 XXX chain with open boundary conditions. We exploit the existence of such a spin chain part in order to solve the full Weyl equation.

Defects in the discrete non-linear Schrodinger model

The discrete non-linear Schrodinger (NLS) model in the presence of an integrable defect is examined. The problem is viewed from a purely algebraic point of view, starting from the fundamental algebraic relations that rule the model. The first charges in involution are explicitly constructed, as well as the corresponding Lax pairs. These lead to sets of difference equations, which include particular terms corresponding to the impurity point. A first glimpse regarding the corresponding continuum limit is also provided.

Generalized Landau-Lifshitz models on the interval

We study the classical generalized gl(n) Landau-Lifshitz (L-L) model with special boundary conditions that preserve integrability. We explicitly derive the first non-trivial local integral of motion, which corresponds to the boundary Hamiltonian for the sl(2) L-L model. Novel expressions of the modified Lax pairs associated to the integrals of motion are also extracted. The relevant equations of motion with the corresponding boundary conditions are determined. Dynamical integrable boundary conditions are also examined within this spirit. Then the generalized isotropic and anisotropic gl(n) Landau-Lifshitz models are considered, and novel expressions of the boundary Hamiltonians and the relevant equations of motion and boundary conditions are derived.

Introduction to Quantum Integrability

In this article we review the basic concepts regarding quantum integrability. Special emphasis is given on the algebraic content of integrable models. The associated algebras are essentially described by the Yang-Baxter and boundary Yang-Baxter equations depending on the choice of boundary conditions. The relation between the aforementioned equations and the braid group is briefly discussed. A short review on quantum groups as well as the quantum inverse scattering method (algebraic Bethe ansatz) is also presented.

Junction type representations of the Temperley-Lieb algebra and associated symmetries

Inspired by earlier works on representations of the Temperley-Lieb algebra we introduce a novel family of representations of the algebra. This may be seen as a generalization of the so called asymmetric twin representation. The underlying symmetry algebra is also examined and it is shown that in addition to certain obvious exact quantum symmetries non trivial quantum algebraic realizations that exactly commute with the representation also exist. Non trivial representations of the boundary Temperley-Lieb algebra as well as the related residual symmetries are also discussed. The corresponding novel R and K matrices solutions of the Yang-Baxter and reflection equations are identified, the relevant quantum spin chain is also constructed and its exact symmetry is studied.

Systematic classical continuum limits of integrable spin chains and emerging novel dualities

We examine certain classical continuum long wave-length limits of prototype integrable quantum spin chains. We define the corresponding construction of classical continuum Lax operators. Our discussion starts with the XXX chain, the anisotropic Heisenberg model and their generalizations and extends to the generic isotropic and anisotropic gl_n magnets. Certain classical and quantum integrable models emerging from special "dualities" of quantum spin chains, parametrized by c-number matrices, are also presented.

Weyl Equation and (Non)-Commutative SU(n+1) BPS Monopoles

We apply the ADHMN construction to obtain the SU(n+1)(for generic values of n) spherically symmetric BPS monopoles with minimal symmetry breaking. In particular, the problem simplifies by solving the Weyl equation, leading to a set of coupled equations, whose solutions are expressed in terms of the Whittaker functions. Next, this construction is generalized for non-commutative SU(n+1) BPS monopoles, where the corresponding solutions are given in terms of the Heun B functions.

Boundary Lax pairs from non-ultra local Poisson algebras

We consider non-ultra local linear Poisson algebras on a continuous line . Suitable combinations of representations of these algebras yield representations of novel generalized linear Poisson algebras or "boundary" extensions. They are parametrized by a "boundary" scalar matrix and depend in addition on the choice of an anti-automorphism. The new algebras are the classical-linear counterparts of known quadratic quantum boundary algebras. For any choice of parameters the non-ultra local contribution of the original Poisson algebra disappears. We also systematically construct the associated classical Lax pair. The classical boundary PCM model is examined as a physical example.

Generic boundary scattering in the open XXZ chain

The open critical XXZ spin chain with a general right boundary and a trivial diagonal left boundary is considered. Within this framework we propose a simple computation of the exact generic boundary S-matrix (with diagonal and non-diagonal entries), starting from the `bare' Bethe ansatz equations. Our results coincide with the ones obtained by Ghoshal and Zamolodchikov, after assuming suitable identifications of the bulk and boundary parameters.

The open XXZ and associated models at q root of unity

The generalized open XXZ model at $q$ root of unity is considered. We review how associated models, such as the $q$ harmonic oscillator, and the lattice sine-Gordon and Liouville models are obtained. Explicit expressions of the local Hamiltonian of the spin ${1 \over 2}$ XXZ spin chain coupled to dynamical degrees of freedom at the one end of the chain are provided. Furthermore, the boundary non-local charges are given for the lattice sine Gordon model and the $q$ harmonic oscillator with open boundaries. We then identify the spectrum and the corresponding Bethe states, of the XXZ and the q harmonic oscillator in the cyclic representation with special non diagonal boundary conditions. Moreover, the spectrum and Bethe states of the lattice versions of the sine-Gordon and Liouville models with open diagonal boundaries is examined. The role of the conserved quantities (boundary non-local charges) in the derivation of the spectrum is also discussed.

On reflection algebras and twisted Yangians

It is known that integrable models associated to rational $R$ matrices give rise to certain non-abelian symmetries known as Yangians. Analogously `boundary' symmetries arise when general but still integrable boundary conditions are implemented, as originally argued by Delius, Mackay and Short from the field theory point of view, in the context of the principal chiral model on the half line. In the present study we deal with a discrete quantum mechanical system with boundaries, that is the $N$ site $gl(n)$ open quantum spin chain. In particular, the open spin chain with two distinct types of boundary conditions known as soliton preserving and soliton non-preserving is considered. For both types of boundaries we present a unified framework for deriving the corresponding boundary non-local charges directly at the quantum level. The non-local charges are simply coproduct realizations of particular boundary quantum algebras called `boundary' or twisted Yangians, depending on the choice of boundary conditions. Finally, with the help of linear intertwining relations between the solutions of the reflection equation and the generators of the boundary or twisted Yangians we are able to exhibit the symmetry of the open spin chain, namely we show that a number of the boundary non-local charges are in fact conserved quantities

preprint2005arXiv

On the symmetries of integrable systems with boundaries

We employ appropriate realizations of the affine Hecke algebra and we recover previously known non-diagonal solutions of the reflection equation for the $U_{q}(\hat{gl_n})$ case. With the help of linear intertwining relations involving the aforementioned solutions of the reflection equation, the symmetry of the open spin chain with a particular choice of the left boundary is exhibited. The symmetry of the corresponding local Hamiltonian is also explored.

The XXX spin s quantum chain and the alternating $s^{1}$, $s^{2}$ chain with boundaries

The integrable XXX spin s quantum chain and the alternating $s^{1}$, $s^{2}$ ($s^{1}-s^{2}={1\over 2}$) chain with boundaries are considered. The scattering of their excitations with the boundaries via the Bethe ansatz method is studied, and the exact boundary S matrices are computed in the limit $s, s^{1, 2} \to \infty$. Moreover, the connection of these models with the SU(2) Principal Chiral, WZW and the RSOS models is discussed.
