QuatRE: Relation-Aware Quaternions for Knowledge Graph Embeddings

We propose a simple yet effective embedding model to learn quaternion embeddings for entities and relations in knowledge graphs. Our model aims to enhance correlations between head and tail entities given a relation within the Quaternion space with Hamilton product. The model achieves this goal by further associating each relation with two relation-aware rotations, which are used to rotate quaternion embeddings of the head and tail entities, respectively. Experimental results show that our proposed model produces state-of-the-art performances on well-known benchmark datasets for knowledge graph completion. Our code is available at: \url{https://github.com/daiquocnguyen/QuatRE}.

Active and Interactive Mapping with Dynamic Gaussian Process Implicit Surfaces for Mobile Manipulators

In this letter, we present an interactive probabilistic mapping framework for a mobile manipulator picking objects from a pile. The aim is to map the scene, actively decide where to go next and which object to pick, make changes to the scene by picking the chosen object, and then map these changes alongside. The proposed framework uses a novel dynamic Gaussian Process (GP) Implicit Surface method to incrementally build and update the scene map that reflects environment changes. Actively the framework provides the next-best-view, balancing the need for picking object reachability with map information gain (IG). To enforce a priority of visiting boundary segments over unknown regions, the IG formulation includes an uncertainty gradient-based frontier score by exploiting the GP kernel derivative. This leads to an efficient strategy that addresses the often conflicting requirement of unknown environment exploration and object picking exploitation given a limited execution horizon. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our framework with software simulation and real-life experiments.

A Label Attention Model for ICD Coding from Clinical Text

ICD coding is a process of assigning the International Classification of Disease diagnosis codes to clinical/medical notes documented by health professionals (e.g. clinicians). This process requires significant human resources, and thus is costly and prone to error. To handle the problem, machine learning has been utilized for automatic ICD coding. Previous state-of-the-art models were based on convolutional neural networks, using a single/several fixed window sizes. However, the lengths and interdependence between text fragments related to ICD codes in clinical text vary significantly, leading to the difficulty of deciding what the best window sizes are. In this paper, we propose a new label attention model for automatic ICD coding, which can handle both the various lengths and the interdependence of the ICD code related text fragments. Furthermore, as the majority of ICD codes are not frequently used, leading to the extremely imbalanced data issue, we additionally propose a hierarchical joint learning mechanism extending our label attention model to handle the issue, using the hierarchical relationships among the codes. Our label attention model achieves new state-of-the-art results on three benchmark MIMIC datasets, and the joint learning mechanism helps improve the performances for infrequent codes.

HSD Shared Task in VLSP Campaign 2019:Hate Speech Detection for Social Good

The paper describes the organisation of the "HateSpeech Detection" (HSD) task at the VLSP workshop 2019 on detecting the fine-grained presence of hate speech in Vietnamese textual items (i.e., messages) extracted from Facebook, which is the most popular social network site (SNS) in Vietnam. The task is organised as a multi-class classification task and based on a large-scale dataset containing 25,431 Vietnamese textual items from Facebook. The task participants were challenged to build a classification model that is capable of classifying an item to one of 3 classes, i.e., "HATE", "OFFENSIVE" and "CLEAN". HSD attracted a large number of participants and was a popular task at VLSP 2019. In particular, there were 71 teams signed up for the task, 14 of them submitted results with 380 valid submissions from 20th September 2019 to 4th October 2019.

Linearity defect of edge ideals and Fröberg's theorem

Fröberg's classical theorem about edge ideals with $2$-linear resolution can be regarded as a classification of graphs whose edge ideals have linearity defect zero. Extending his theorem, we classify all graphs whose edge ideals have linearity defect at most $1$. Our characterization is independent of the characteristic of the base field: the graphs in question are exactly weakly chordal graphs with induced matching number at most $2$. The proof uses the theory of Betti splittings of monomial ideals due to Francisco, Hà, and Van Tuyl and the structure of weakly chordal graphs. Along the way, we compute the linearity defect of edge ideals of cycles and weakly chordal graphs. We are also able to recover and generalize previous results due to Dochtermann-Engström, Kimura, and Woodroofe on the projective dimension and Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of edge ideals.

Necessary and sufficient condition for steerability of two-qubit states by the geometry of steering outcomes

Fully characterizing the steerability of a quantum state of a bipartite system has remained an open problem since the concept of steerability was defined. In this work, using our recent geometrical approach to steerability, we suggest a necessary and sufficient condition for a two-qubit state to be steerable with respect to projective measurements. To this end, we define the critical radius of local models and show that a state of two qubits is steerable with respect to projective measurements from Alice's side if and only if her critical radius of local models is less than $1$. As an example, we calculate the critical radius of local models for the so-called T-states by proving the optimality of a recently-suggested ansatz for Alice's local hidden state model.

Non-separability and steerability of two-qubit states from the geometry of steering outcomes

When two qubits A and B are in an appropriate state, Alice can remotely steer Bob's system B into different ensembles by making different measurements on A. This famous phenomenon is known as quantum steering, or Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering. Importantly, quantum steering establishes the correspondence not only between a measurement on A (made by Alice) and an ensemble of B (owned by Bob) but also between each of Alice's measurement outcomes and an unnormalized conditional state of Bob's system. The unnormalized conditional states of B corresponding to all possible measurement outcomes of Alice are called Alice's steering outcomes. We show that, surprisingly, the $4$-dimensional geometry of Alice's steering outcomes completely determines both the non-separability of the two-qubit state and its steerability from her side. Consequently, the problem of classifying two-qubit states into non-separable and steerable classes is equivalent to geometrically classifying certain $4$-dimensional skewed double-cones.

On the asymptotic behavior of the linearity defect

This work concerns the linearity defect of a module $M$ over a noetherian local ring $R$, introduced by Herzog and Iyengar in 2005, and denoted by $\text{ld}_R M$. Roughly speaking, $\text{ld}_R M$ is the homological degree beyond which the minimal free resolution of $M$ is linear. In the paper, it is proved that for any ideal $I$ in a regular local ring $R$ and for any finitely generated $R$-module $M$, each of the sequences $(\text{ld}_R (I^nM))_n$ and $(\text{ld}_R (M/I^nM))_n$ is eventually constant. The first statement follows from a more general result about the eventual constancy of the sequence $(\text{ld}_R C_n)_n$ where $C$ is a finitely generated graded module over a standard graded algebra over $R$. The second statement follows from the first together with a result of Avramov on small homomorphisms.

The Waldschmidt constant for squarefree monomial ideals

Given a squarefree monomial ideal $I \subseteq R =k[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$, we show that $\widehatα(I)$, the Waldschmidt constant of $I$, can be expressed as the optimal solution to a linear program constructed from the primary decomposition of $I$. By applying results from fractional graph theory, we can then express $\widehatα(I)$ in terms of the fractional chromatic number of a hypergraph also constructed from the primary decomposition of $I$. Moreover, expressing $\widehatα(I)$ as the solution to a linear program enables us to prove a Chudnovsky-like lower bound on $\widehatα(I)$, thus verifying a conjecture of Cooper-Embree-Hà-Hoefel for monomial ideals in the squarefree case. As an application, we compute the Waldschmidt constant and the resurgence for some families of squarefree monomial ideals. For example, we determine both constants for unions of general linear subspaces of $\mathbb{P}^n$ with few components compared to $n$, and we find the Waldschmidt constant for the Stanley-Reisner ideal of a uniform matroid.

Regularity over homomorphisms and a Frobenius characterization of Koszul algebras

Let $R$ be a standard graded algebra over an $F$-finite field of characteristic $p > 0$. Let $ϕ:R\to R$ be the Frobenius endomorphism. For each finitely generated graded $R$-module $M$, let ${}^ϕ\!M$ be the abelian group $M$ with the $R$-module structure induced by the Frobenius endomorphism. The $R$-module ${}^ϕ\!M$ has a natural grading given by $\text{deg} x=j$ if $x\in M_{jp+i}$ for some $0\le i \le p-1$. In this paper, we prove that $R$ is Koszul if and only if there exists a non-zero finitely generated graded $R$-module $M$ such that $\text{reg}_R\,{}^ϕ\!M <\infty$. This result supplies another instance for the ability of the Frobenius in detecting homological properties, as exemplified by Kunz's famous regularity criterion. The main technical tool is the notion of Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity over certain homomorphisms between $\mathbb{N}$-graded algebras. The latter notion is a common generalization of the relative and absolute Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of modules.

Koszul determinantal rings and $2\times e$ matrices of linear forms

Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$. Let $X$ be a $2\times e$ matrix of linear forms over a polynomial ring $k[\mathsf{x}_1, \ldots,\mathsf{x}_n]$ (where $e,n\ge 1$). We prove that the determinantal ring $R = k[\mathsf{x}_1,\ldots,\mathsf{x}_n]/I_2(X)$ is Koszul if and only if in the Kronecker-Weierstrass normal form of $X$, the largest length of a nilpotent block is at most twice the smallest length of a scroll block. As an application, we classify rational normal scrolls whose all section rings by natural coordinates are Koszul. This result settles a conjecture due to Conca.

$N_6$ property for third Veronese embeddings

The rational homology groups of the matching complexes are closely related to the syzygies of the Veronese embeddings. In this paper we will prove the vanishing of certain rational homology groups of matching complexes, thus proving that the third Veronese embeddings satisfy the property $N_6$. This settles the Ottaviani-Paoletti conjecture for third Veronese embeddings. This result is optimal since $ν_3(\PP^n)$ does not satisfy the property $N_7$ for $n\ge 2$ as shown by Ottaviani-Paoletti in \cite{OP}.

Periodicity of betti numbers of monomial curves

Let $K$ be an arbitrary field. Let $\a = (a_1< ... <a_n)$ be a sequence of positive integers. Let $C(\a)$ be the affine monomial curve in ${\mathbb A}^n$ parametrized by $t\to (t^{a_1}, ..., t^{a_n})$. Let $I(\a)$ be the defining ideal of $C(\a)$ in $K[x_1, ..., x_n]$. For each positive integer $j$, let $\a+j$ be the sequence $(a_1 + j, ..., a_n+j)$. In this paper, we prove the conjecture of Herzog and Srinivasan saying that the betti numbers of $I(\a + j)$ are eventually periodic in $j$ with period $a_n -a_1$. When $j$ is large enough, we describe the betti table for the closure of $C(\a+j)$ in $\PP^n$.

The Koszul property of pinched Veronese varieties

Let $K$ be an arbitrary field. Let $n,d \ge 2$ be positive integers. Let $V(n,d)$ be the set of all lattice points $\mathbf b = (b_1, ..., b_n)$ in ${\mathbb N}^n$ such that $\sum_{i=1}^n b_i = d$. Let $Γ= V(n,d) \setminus \{ \mathbf a \}$ for some element $\mathbf a \in V(n,d)$. In this paper we prove that the semigroup ring $K[Γ]$ is Koszul unless $d \ge 3$ and ${\mathbf a} = (0, ...,0, 2, d-2)$ or one of its permutations. This generalizes results of Caviglia, Conca, and Tancer.
