Calculus and applications

This is an introduction to calculus, and its applications to basic questions from physics. We first discuss the theory of functions $f:\mathbb R\to\mathbb R$, with the notion of continuity, and the construction of the derivative $f'(x)$ and of the integral $\int_a^bf(x)dx$. Then we investigate the case of the complex functions $f:\mathbb C\to\mathbb C$, and notably the holomorphic functions, and harmonic functions. Then, we discuss the multivariable functions, $f:\mathbb R^N\to\mathbb R^M$ or $f:\mathbb R^N\to\mathbb C^M$ or $f:\mathbb C^N\to\mathbb C^M$, with general theory, integration results, maximization questions, and basic applications to physics.

Linear algebra and group theory

This is an introduction to linear algebra and group theory. We first review the linear algebra basics, namely the determinant, the diagonalization procedure and more, and with the determinant being constructed as it should, as a signed volume. We discuss then the basic applications of linear algebra to questions in analysis. Then we get into the study of the closed groups of unitary matrices $G\subset U_N$, with some basic algebraic theory, and with a number of probability computations, in the finite group case. In the general case, where $G\subset U_N$ is compact, we explain how the Weingarten integration formula works, and we present some basic $N\to\infty$ applications.

Algebraic invariants of truncated Fourier matrices

A partial Hadamard matrix $H\in M_{M\times N}(\mathbb C)$ is called of "classical type" if the associated quantum semigroup $G\subset\widetilde{S}_M^+$ is classical. In combinatorial terms, if $H_1,\ldots,H_M\in\mathbb T^N$ are the rows of the matrix, the vectors $H_i/H_j\in\mathbb T^N$ must be pairwise proportional, or orthogonal. We propose here of definition for the algebraic (or quantum) invariants of such matrices. For the truncated Fourier matrices, which are all of classical type, we obtain certain Bernoulli laws, that we compute in the $N>>M$ regime.

Counting results for thin Butson matrices

A partial Butson matrix is a matrix $H\in M_{M\times N}(\mathbb Z_q)$ having its rows pairwise orthogonal, where $\mathbb Z_q\subset\mathbb C^\times$ is the group of $q$-th roots of unity. We investigate here the counting problem for these matrices in the "thin" regime, where $M=2,3,\ldots$ is small, and where $N\to\infty$ (subject to the condition $N\in p\mathbb N$ when $q=p^k>2$). The proofs are inspired from the de Launey-Levin and Richmond-Shallit counting results.

Quantum invariants of deformed Fourier matrices

We study the deformed tensor products of complex Hadamard matrices, $L_{ia,jb}=Q_{ib}H_{ij}K_{ab}$. One problem is that of reconstructing the quantum group $G_L\subset S_{NM}^+$ out of the quantum groups $G_H\subset S_N^+,G_K\subset S_M^+$ and of the parameter matrix $Q\in M_{N\times M}(\mathbb T)$, and we obtain here several results, including complete results in the Fourier matrix case, $H=F_N,K=F_M$, when the parameter matrix $Q$ is generic.

The quantum algebra of partial Hadamard matrices

A partial Hadamard matrix is a matrix $H\in M_{M\times N}(\mathbb T)$ whose rows are pairwise orthogonal. We associate to each such $H$ a certain quantum semigroup $G$ of quantum partial permutations of $\{1,...,M\}$ and study the correspondence $H\to G$. We discuss as well the relation between the completion problems for a given partial Hadamard matrix and completion problems for the associated submagic matrix $P\in M_M(M_N(\mathbb C))$, in both cases introducing certain criteria for the existence of the suitable completions.

Submatrices of Hadamard matrices: complementation results

Two submatrices $A,D$ of a Hadamard matrix $H$ are called complementary if, up to a permutation of rows and columns, $H=[^A_C{\ }^B_D]$. We find here an explicit formula for the polar decomposition of $D$. As an application, we show that under suitable smallness assumptions on the size of $A$, the complementary matrix $D$ is an almost Hadamard sign pattern, i.e. its rescaled polar part is an almost Hadamard matrix.
