No Ensemble Averaging Below the Black Hole Threshold

In the AdS/CFT correspondence, amplitudes associated to connected bulk manifolds with disconnected boundaries have presented a longstanding mystery. A possible interpretation is that they reflect the effects of averaging over an ensemble of boundary theories. But in examples in dimension $D\geq 3$, an appropriate ensemble of boundary theories does not exist. Here we sharpen the puzzle by identifying a class of "sub-threshold" observables that we claim do not show effects of ensemble averaging. These are amplitudes that do not involve black hole states. To support our claim, we explore the example of $D=3$, and show that connected solutions of Einstein's equations with disconnected boundary never contribute to sub-threshold observables. To demonstrate this requires some novel results about the renormalized volume of a hyperbolic three-manifold, which we prove using modern methods in hyperbolic geometry. Why then do any observables show apparent ensemble averaging? We propose that this reflects the chaotic nature of black hole physics and the fact that the Hilbert space describing a black hole does not have a large $N$ limit.

The prestige and status of research fields within mathematics

While the ``hierarchy of science'' has been widely analysed, there is no corresponding study of the status of subfields within a given scientific field. We use bibliometric data to show that subfields of mathematics have a different ``standing'' within the mathematics community. Highly ranked departments tend to specialize in some subfields more than in others, and the same subfields are also over-represented in the most selective mathematics journals or among recipients of top prizes. Moreover this status of subfields evolves markedly over the period of observation (1984--2016), with some subfields gaining and others losing in standing. The status of subfields is related to different publishing habits, but some of those differences are opposite to those observed when considering the hierarchy of scientific fields. We examine possible explanations for the ``status'' of different subfields. Some natural explanations -- availability of funding, importance of applications -- do not appear to function, suggesting that factors internal to the discipline are at work. We propose a different type of explanation, based on a notion of ``focus'' of a subfield, that might or might not be specific to mathematics.

Weakly Inscribed Polyhedra

We study convex polyhedra in $\mathbb{R}\mathbb{P}^3$ with all their vertices on a sphere. We do not require, in particular, that the polyhedra lie in the interior of the sphere, hence the term "weakly inscribed". Such polyhedra can be interpreted as ideal polyhedra, if we regard $\mathbb{R}\mathbb{P}^3$ as a combination of the hyperbolic space and the de Sitter space, with the sphere as the common ideal boundary. We have three main results: (1) the $1$-skeleta of weakly inscribed polyhedra are characterized in a purely combinatorial way, (2) the exterior dihedral angles are characterized by linear programming, and (3) we also describe the hyperbolic-de Sitter structure induced on the boundary of weakly inscribed polyhedra.

Constant Gauss curvature foliations of AdS spacetimes with particles

We prove that for any convex globally hyperbolic maximal (GHM) anti-de Sitter (AdS) 3-dimensional space-time $N$ with particles (cone singularities of angles less than $π$ along time-like curves), the complement of the convex core in $N$ admits a unique foliation by constant Gauss curvature surfaces. This extends, and provides a new proof of, a result of \cite{BBZ2}. We also describe a parametrization of the space of convex GHM AdS metrics on a given manifold, with particles of given angles, by the product of two copies of the Teichmüller space of hyperbolic metrics with cone singularities of fixed angles. Finally, we use the results on $K$-surfaces to extend to hyperbolic surfaces with cone singularities of angles less than $π$ a number of results concerning landslides, which are smoother analogs of earthquakes sharing some of their key properties.

Variétés lorentziennes plates vues comme limites de variétés anti-de Sitter, d'après Danciger, Guéritaud et Kassel

A survey on the recent work of Danciger, Guéritaud and Kassel on Margulis space-times and complete anti-de Sitter space-times. Margulis space-times are quotients of the 3-dimensional Minkowski space by (non-abelian) free groups acting propertly discontinuously. Goldman, Labourie and Margulis have shown that they are determined by a convex co-compact hyperbolic surface $S$ along with a first-order deformation of the metric which uniformly decreases the lengths of closed geodesics. Danciger, Guéritaud and Kassel show that those space-times are principal $\mathbb R$-bundles over $S$ with time-like geodesics as fibers, that they are homeomorphic to the interior of a handlebody, and that they admit a fundamental domain bounded by crooked planes. To obtain those results they show that those Margulis space-times are "infinitesimal" versions of 3-dimensional anti-de Sitter manifolds, and are lead to introduce a new parameterization of the space of deformations of a hyperbolic surface that increase the lengths of all closed geodesics.

Polyhedra inscribed in a quadric

We study convex polyhedra in three-space that are inscribed in a quadric surface. Up to projective transformations, there are three such surfaces: the sphere, the hyperboloid, and the cylinder. Our main result is that a planar graph $Γ$ is realized as the $1$-skeleton of a polyhedron inscribed in the hyperboloid or cylinder if and only if $Γ$ is realized as the $1$-skeleton of a polyhedron inscribed in the sphere and $Γ$ admits a Hamiltonian cycle. Rivin characterized convex polyhedra inscribed in the sphere by studying the geometry of ideal polyhedra in hyperbolic space. We study the case of the hyperboloid and the cylinder by parameterizing the space of convex ideal polyhedra in anti-de Sitter geometry and in half-pipe geometry. Just as the cylinder can be seen as a degeneration of the sphere and the hyperboloid, half-pipe geometry is naturally a limit of both hyperbolic and anti-de Sitter geometry. We promote a unified point of view to the study of the three cases throughout.

Analytic aspects of the circulant Hadamard conjecture

We investigate the problem of counting the real or complex Hadamard matrices which are circulant, by using analytic methods. Our main observation is the fact that for $|q_0|=...=|q_{N-1}|=1$ the quantity $Φ=\sum_{i+k=j+l}\frac{q_iq_k}{q_jq_l}$ satisfies $Φ\geq N^2$, with equality if and only if $q=(q_i)$ is the eigenvalue vector of a rescaled circulant complex Hadamard matrix. This suggests three analytic problems, namely: (1) the brute-force minimization of $Φ$, (2) the study of the critical points of $Φ$, and (3) the computation of the moments of $Φ$. We explore here these questions, with some results and conjectures.

Collisions of particles in locally AdS spacetimes II Moduli of globally hyperbolic spaces

We investigate 3-dimensional globally hyperbolic AdS manifolds containing "particles", i.e., cone singularities of angles less than $2π$ along a time-like graph $Γ$. To each such space we associate a graph and a finite family of pairs of hyperbolic surfaces with cone singularities. We show that this data is sufficient to recover the space locally (i.e., in the neighborhood of a fixed metric). This is a partial extension of a result of Mess for non-singular globally hyperbolic AdS manifolds.

Submatrices of Hadamard matrices: complementation results

Two submatrices $A,D$ of a Hadamard matrix $H$ are called complementary if, up to a permutation of rows and columns, $H=[^A_C{\ }^B_D]$. We find here an explicit formula for the polar decomposition of $D$. As an application, we show that under suitable smallness assumptions on the size of $A$, the complementary matrix $D$ is an almost Hadamard sign pattern, i.e. its rescaled polar part is an almost Hadamard matrix.

The convex core of quasifuchsian manifolds with particles

We consider quasifuchsian manifolds with "particles", i.e., cone singularities of fixed angle less than $π$ going from one connected component of the boundary at infinity to the other. Each connected component of the boundary at infinity is then endowed with a conformal structure marked by the endpoints of the particles. We prove that this defines a homeomorphism from the space of quasifuchsian metrics with $n$ particles (of fixed angle) and the product of two copies of the Teichmüller space of a surface with $n$ marked points. This is analoguous to the Bers theorem in the non-singular case. Quasifuchsian manifolds with particles also have a convex core. Its boundary has a hyperbolic induced metric, with cone singularities at the intersection with the particles, and is pleated along a measured geodesic lamination. We prove that any two hyperbolic metrics with cone singularities (of prescribed angle) can be obtained, and also that any two measured bending laminations, satisfying some obviously necessary conditions, can be obtained, as in [BO] in the non-singular case.

A cyclic extension of the earthquake flow II

The landslide flow, introduced in [5], is a smoother analog of the earthquake flow on Teichmüller space which shares some of its key properties. We show here that further properties of earthquakes apply to landslides. The landslide flow is the Hamiltonian flow of a convex function. The smooth grafting map $sgr$ taking values in Teichmüller space, which is to landslides as grafting is to earthquakes, is proper and surjective with respect to either of its variables. The smooth grafting map $SGr$ taking values in the space of complex projective structures is symplectic (up to a multiplicative constant). The composition of two landslides has a fixed point on Teichmüller space. As a consequence we obtain new results on constant Gauss curvature surfaces in 3-dimensional hyperbolic or AdS manifolds. We also show that the landslide flow has a satisfactory extension to the boundary of Teichmüller space.

Flippable tilings of constant curvature surfaces

We call "flippable tilings" of a constant curvature surface a tiling by "black" and "white" faces, so that each edge is adjacent to two black and two white faces (one of each on each side), the black face is forward on the right side and backward on the left side, and it is possible to "flip" the tiling by pushing all black faces forward on the left side and backward on the right side. Among those tilings we distinguish the "symmetric" ones, for which the metric on the surface does not change under the flip. We provide some existence statements, and explain how to parameterize the space of those tilings (with a fixed number of black faces) in different ways. For instance one can glue the white faces only, and obtain a metric with cone singularities which, in the hyperbolic and spherical case, uniquely determines a symmetric tiling. The proofs are based on the geometry of polyhedral surfaces in 3-dimensional spaces modeled either on the sphere or on the anti-de Sitter space.

The renormalized volume and uniformisation of conformal structures

We study the renormalized volume of asymptotically hyperbolic Einstein (AHE in short) manifolds $(M,g)$ when the conformal boundary $\pl M$ has dimension $n$ even. Its definition depends on the choice of metric $h_0$ on $\partial M$ in the conformal class at infinity determined by $g$, we denote it by ${\rm Vol}_R(M,g;h_0)$. We show that ${\rm Vol}_R(M,g;\cdot)$ is a functional admitting a "Polyakov type" formula in the conformal class $[h_0]$ and we describe the critical points as solutions of some non-linear equation $v_n(h_0)={\rm const}$, satisfied in particular by Einstein metrics. In dimension $n=2$, choosing extremizers in the conformal class amounts to uniformizing the surface, while in dimension $n=4$ this amounts to solving the $σ_2$-Yamabe problem. Next, we consider the variation of ${\rm Vol}_R(M,\cdot;\cdot)$ along a curve of AHE metrics $g^t$ with boundary metric $h_0^t$ and we use this to show that, provided conformal classes can be (locally) parametrized by metrics $h$ solving $v_n(h)=\int_{\pl M}v_n(h){\rm dvol}_{h}$, the set of ends of AHE manifolds (up to diffeomorphisms isotopic to Identity) can be viewed as a Lagrangian submanifold in the cotangent space to the space $\mc{T}(\pl M)$ of conformal structures on $\pl M$. We obtain as a consequence a higher-dimensional version of McMullen's quasifuchsian reciprocity. We finally show that conformal classes admitting negatively curved Einstein metrics are local minima for the renormalized volume for a warped product type filling.

A cyclic extension of the earthquake flow

Let $\cT$ be Teichmüller space of a closed surface of genus at least 2. For any point $c\in \cT$, we describe an action of the circle on $\cT\times \cT$, which limits to the earthquake flow when one of the parameters goes to a measured lamination in the Thurston boundary of $\cT$. This circle action shares some of the main properties of the earthquake flow, for instance it satisfies an extension of Thurston's Earthquake Theorem and it has a complex extension which is analogous and limits to complex earthquakes. Moreover, a related circle action on $\cT\times \cT$ extends to the product of two copies of the universal Teichmüller space.

Combinatorial aspects of orthogonal group integrals

We study the integrals of type $I(a)=\int_{O_n}\prod u_{ij}^{a_{ij}}\,du$, depending on a matrix $a\in M_{p\times q}(\mathbb N)$, whose exact computation is an open problem. Our results are as follows: (1) an extension of the "elementary expansion" formula from the case $a\in M_{2\times q}(2\mathbb N)$ to the general case $a\in M_{p\times q}(\mathbb N)$, (2) the construction of the "best algebraic normalization" of $I(a)$, in the case $a\in M_{2\times q}(\mathbb N)$, (3) an explicit formula for $I(a)$, for diagonal matrices $a\in M_{3\times 3}(\mathbb N)$, (4) a modelling result in the case $a\in M_{1\times 2}(\mathbb N)$, in relation with the Euler-Rodrigues formula. Most proofs use various combinatorial techniques.

Collisions of particles in locally AdS spacetimes I. Local description and global examples

We investigate 3-dimensional globally hyperbolic AdS manifolds containing "particles", i.e., cone singularities along a graph $Γ$. We impose physically relevant conditions on the cone singularities, e.g. positivity of mass (angle less than $2π$ on time-like singular segments). We construct examples of such manifolds, describe the cone singularities that can arise and the way they can interact (the local geometry near the vertices of $Γ$). We then adapt to this setting some notions like global hyperbolicity which are natural for Lorentz manifolds, and construct some examples of globally hyperbolic AdS manifolds with interacting particles.

The Weil-Petersson metric and the renormalized volume of hyperbolic 3-manifolds

We survey the renormalized volume of hyperbolic 3-manifolds, as a tool for Teichmuller theory, using simple differential geometry arguments to recover results sometimes first achieved by other means. One such application is McMullen's quasifuchsian (or more generally Kleinian) reciprocity, for which different arguments are proposed. Another is the fact that the renormalized volume of quasifuchsian (or more generally geometrically finite) hyperbolic 3-manifolds provides a Kahler potential for the Weil-Petersson metric on Teichmuller space. Yet another is the fact that the grafting map is symplectic, which is proved using a variant of the renormalized volume defined for hyperbolic ends.

A symplectic map between hyperbolic and complex Teichmüller theory

Let $S$ be a closed, orientable surface of genus at least 2. The cotangent bundle of the "hyperbolic'' Teichmüller space of $S$ can be identified with the space $\CP$ of complex projective structures on $S$ through measured laminations, while the cotangent bundle of the "complex'' Teichmüller space can be identified with $\CP$ through the Schwarzian derivative. We prove that the resulting map between the two cotangent spaces, although not smooth, is symplectic. The proof uses a variant of the renormalized volume defined for hyperbolic ends.

Maximal surfaces and the universal Teichmüller space

We show that any element of the universal Teichmüller space is realized by a unique minimal Lagrangian diffeomorphism from the hyperbolic plane to itself. The proof uses maximal surfaces in the 3-dimensional anti-de Sitter space. We show that, in $AdS^{n+1}$, any subset $E$ of the boundary at infinity which is the boundary at infinity of a space-like hypersurface bounds a maximal space-like hypersurface. In $AdS^3$, if $E$ is the graph of a quasi-symmetric homeomorphism, then this maximal surface is unique, and it has negative sectional curvature. As a by-product, we find a simple characterization of quasi-symmetric homeomorphisms of the circle in terms of 3-dimensional projective geometry.

Multi Black Holes and Earthquakes on Riemann surfaces with boundaries

We prove an "Earthquake Theorem" for hyperbolic metrics with geodesic boundary on a compact surfaces $S$ with boundary: given two hyperbolic metrics with geodesic boundary on a surface with $k$ boundary components, there are $2^k$ right earthquakes transforming the first in the second. An alternative formulation arises by introducing the enhanced Teichmueller space of S: We prove that any two points of the latter are related by a unique right earthquake. The proof rests on the geometry of ``multi-black holes'', which are 3-dimensional anti-de Sitter manifolds, topologically the product of a surface with boundary by an interval.

Quasi-Fuchsian manifolds with particles

We consider 3-dimensional hyperbolic cone-manifolds, singular along infinite lines, which are ``convex co-compact'' in a natural sense. We prove an infinitesimal rigidity statement when the angle around the singular lines is less than $π$: any first-order deformation changes either one of those angles or the conformal structure at infinity, with marked points corresponding to the endpoints of the singular lines. Moreover, any small variation of the conformal structure at infinity and of the singular angles can be achieved by a unique small deformation of the cone-manifold structure.

On the infinitesimal rigidity of polyhedra with vertices in convex position

Let $P \subset \R^3$ be a polyhedron. It was conjectured that if $P$ is weakly convex (i. e. its vertices lie on the boundary of a strictly convex domain) and decomposable (i. e. $P$ can be triangulated without adding new vertices), then it is infinitesimally rigid. We prove this conjecture under a weak additional assumption of codecomposability. The proof relies on a result of independent interest concerning the Hilbert-Einstein function of a triangulated convex polyhedron. We determine the signature of the Hessian of that function with respect to deformations of the interior edges. In particular, if there are no interior vertices, then the Hessian is negative definite.

Hyperbolic manifolds with convex boundary

Let $(M, \partial M)$ be a compact 3-manifold with boundary, which admits a convex co-compact hyperbolic metric. We consider the hyperbolic metrics on $M$ such that the boundary is smooth and strictly convex. We show that the induced metrics on the boundary are exactly the metrics with curvature $K>-1$, and that the third fundamental forms of $\dr M$ are exactly the metrics with curvature $K<1$, for which contractible closed geodesics have length $L>2π$. Each is obtained exactly once. Other related results describe existence and uniqueness properties for other boundary conditions, when the metric which is achieved on $\dr M$ is a linear combination of the first, second and third fundamental forms.

Hypersurfaces in $H^n$ and the space of its horospheres

A classical theorem, mainly due to Aleksandrov and Pogorelov, states that any Riemannian metric on $S^2$ with curvature $K>-1$ is induced on a unique convex surface in $H^3$. A similar result holds with the induced metric replaced by the third fundamental form. We show that the same phenomenon happens with yet another metric on immersed surfaces, which we call the horospherical metric. This results extends in higher dimension, the metrics obtained are then conformally flat. One can also study equivariant immersions of surfaces or the metrics obtained on the boundaries of hyperbolic 3-manifolds. Some statements which are difficult or only conjectured for the induced metric or the third fundamental form become fairly easy when one considers the horospherical metric. The results concerning the third fundamental form are obtained using a duality between $H^3$ and the de Sitter space $S^3_1$. In the same way, the results concerning the horospherical metric are proved through a duality between $H^n$ and the space of its horospheres, which is naturally endowed with a fairly rich geometrical structure.

On the Schlafli differential formula

he celebrated formula of Schlafli relates the variation of the dihedral angles of a smooth family of polyhedra in a space form and the variation of volume. We give a smooth analogue of this classical formula -- our result relates the variation of the volume bounded by a hypersurface moving in a general Einstein manifold and the integral of the variation of the mean curvature. The argument is direct, and the classical polyhedral result (as well as results for Lorenzian space forms) is an easy corollary. We extend it to variations of the metric in a Riemannian Einstein manifold with boundary. We apply our results to extend the classical Euclidean inequalities of Aleksandrov to other 3-dimensional constant curvature spaces. We also obtain rigidity results for Ricci-flat manifolds with umbilic boundaries and existence results for foliations of Einstein manifolds by hypersurfaces.
