Best Arm Identification with Contextual Information under a Small Gap

We study the best-arm identification (BAI) problem with a fixed budget and contextual (covariate) information. In each round of an adaptive experiment, after observing contextual information, we choose a treatment arm using past observations and current context. Our goal is to identify the best treatment arm, which is a treatment arm with the maximal expected reward marginalized over the contextual distribution, with a minimal probability of misidentification. In this study, we consider a class of nonparametric bandit models that converge to location-shift models when the gaps go to zero. First, we derive lower bounds of the misidentification probability for a certain class of strategies and bandit models (probabilistic models of potential outcomes) under a small-gap regime. A small-gap regime is a situation where gaps of the expected rewards between the best and suboptimal treatment arms go to zero, which corresponds to one of the worst cases in identifying the best treatment arm. We then develop the ``Random Sampling (RS)-Augmented Inverse Probability weighting (AIPW) strategy,'' which is asymptotically optimal in the sense that the probability of misidentification under the strategy matches the lower bound when the budget goes to infinity in the small-gap regime. The RS-AIPW strategy consists of the RS rule tracking a target sample allocation ratio and the recommendation rule using the AIPW estimator.

Adaptively Robust Small Area Estimation: Balancing Robustness and Efficiency of Empirical Bayes Confidence Intervals

Empirical Bayes small area estimation based on the well-known Fay-Herriot model may produce unreliable estimates when outlying areas exist. Existing robust methods against outliers or model misspecification are generally inefficient when the assumed distribution is plausible. This paper proposes a simple modification of the standard empirical Bayes methods with adaptively balancing robustness and efficiency. The proposed method employs gamma-divergence instead of the marginal log-likelihood and optimizes a tuning parameter controlling robustness by pursuing the efficiency of empirical Bayes confidence intervals for areal parameters. We provide an asymptotic theory of the proposed method under both the correct specification of the assumed distribution and the existence of outlying areas. We investigate the numerical performance of the proposed method through simulations and an application to small area estimation of average crime numbers.

Leptogenesis in $E_6 \times U(1)_A$ SUSY GUT model

We study the thermal leptogenesis in the $E_6\times U(1)_A$ SUSY GUT model in which realistic masses and mixings of quarks and leptons can be realized. We show that the sufficient baryon number can be produced by the leptogenesis in the model, in which the mass parameter of the lightest right-handed neutrino is predicted to be smaller than $10^8$ GeV. The essential point is that the mass of the lightest right-handed neutrino can be enhanced in the model because it has a lot of mass terms whose mass parameters are predicted to be the same order of magnitude which is smaller than $10^8$ GeV. We show that O(10) enhancement for the lightest right-handed neutrino mass is sufficient for the observed baryon asymmetry. Note that such mass enhancements do not change the predictions of neutrino masses and mixings at the low energy scale in the $E_6$ model which has six right-handed neutrinos. In the calculation, we include the effects of supersymmetry and flavor in final states of the right-handed neutrino decay. We show that the effect of supersymmetry is quite important even in the strong washout regime when the effect of flavor is included. This is because the washout effects on the asymmetries both of the muon and the electron become weaker than that of the tau asymmetry.
