Antiferromagnetic Kitaev interaction in $J_\rm{eff}=1/2$ cobalt honeycomb materials Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$ and Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$

Finding new materials with antiferromagnetic (AFM) Kitaev interaction is an urgent issue to broaden and enrich the quantum magnetism research significantly. By carrying out inelastic neutron scattering experiments and subsequent analysis, we conclude that Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$ and Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ are new honeycomb cobalt-based AFM Kitaev systems. The spin-orbit excitons at 20-28~meV in both compounds strongly supports the idea that Co$^{2+}$ ions of both compounds have a spin-orbital entangled $J_\rm{eff}=1/2$ state. Furthermore, we found that a generalized Kitaev-Heisenberg Hamiltonian can well describe the spin-wave excitations of both compounds with additional 3rd nearest-neighbor interaction. Our best-fit parameters show large AFM Kitaev terms and off-diagonal symmetric anisotropy terms of a similar magnitude in both compounds. We should stress that our parameters' optimized magnetic structures are consistent with the magnetic structures reported from neutron diffraction studies. Moreover, there is also the magnon-damping effect at the higher energy part of the spin waves, as usually observed in other Kitaev magnets. We demonstrate that Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$ and Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ are the first experimental realization of AFM Kitaev magnets based on the systematic studies of the spin waves and analysis.

Damped Dirac magnon in a metallic kagome antiferromagnet FeSn

The kagome lattice is a fertile platform to explore topological excitations with both Fermi-Dirac and Bose-Einstein statistics. While relativistic Dirac Fermions and flat-bands have been discovered in the electronic structure of kagome metals, the spin excitations have received less attention. Here we report inelastic neutron scattering studies of the prototypical kagome magnetic metal FeSn. The spectra display well-defined spin waves extending up to 120 meV. Above this energy, the spin waves become progressively broadened, reflecting interactions with the Stoner continuum. Using linear spin wave theory, we determine an effective spin Hamiltonian that reproduces the measured dispersion. This analysis indicates that the Dirac magnon at the K-point remarkably occurs on the brink of a region where well-defined spin waves become unobservable. Our results emphasize the influential role of itinerant carriers on the topological spin excitations of metallic kagome magnets.

Emergent spin-$1$ Haldane gap and ferroelectricity in a frustrated spin-$1/2$ ladder

We report experimental and theoretical evidence that Rb$_2$Cu$_2$Mo$_3$O$_{12}$ has a nonmagnetic tetramer ground state of a two-leg ladder comprising antiferromagnetically coupled frustrated spin-$1/2$ chains and exhibits a Haldane spin gap of emergent spin-1 pairs. Three spin excitations split from the spin-1 triplet by a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction are identified in inelastic neutron-scattering and electron spin resonance spectra. A tiny magnetic field generates ferroelectricity without closing the spin gap, indicating a novel class of ferroelectricity induced by a vector spin chirality order.

Establishing the carrier scattering phase diagram for ZrNiSn-based half-Heusler thermoelectric materials

Chemical doping is one of the most important strategies for tuning electrical properties of semiconductors, particularly thermoelectric materials. Generally, the main role of chemical doping lies in optimizing the carrier concentration, but there can potentially be other important effects. Here, we show that chemical doping plays multiple roles for both electron and phonon transport properties in half-Heusler thermoelectric materials. With ZrNiSn-based half-Heusler materials as an example, we use high-quality single and polycrystalline crystals, various probes, including electrical transport measurements, inelastic neutron scattering measurement, and first-principles calculations, to investigate the underlying electron-phonon interaction. We find that chemical doping brings strong screening effects to ionized impurities, grain boundary, and polar optical phonon scattering, but has negligible influence on lattice thermal conductivity. Furthermore, it is possible to establish a carrier scattering phase diagram, which can be used to select reasonable strategies for optimization of the thermoelectric performance.

Zero-energy excitation in the classical kagome antiferromagnet NaBa$_{2}$Mn$_{3}$F$_{11}$

We performed inelastic neutron scattering measurements on a polycrystalline sample of a classical kagome antiferromagnet NaBa$_{2}$Mn$_{3}$F$_{11}$ to investigate the possibility of a dispersionless zero-energy excitation associated with rotation of spins along the chains. The observed spectra indeed exhibit such an excitation with strong intensity at low energy, as well as dispersive excitations with weak intensity at high energy. Combining the measurements with calculations from linear spin-wave theory reveals that NaBa$_{2}$Mn$_{3}$F$_{11}$ is a good realization of the classical kagome antiferromagnet which exhibits a dispersionless mode lifted by the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction.

Spin gap and L modulated intensity at the low-energy incommensurate magnetic fluctuations in the superconducting state of Sr2RuO4

Low-energy incommensurate (IC) magnetic fluctuations in the multiband superconductor Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ is investigated by high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering measurements and random phase approximation (RPA) calculations. Below $T_\text{c}$, the substantial spin gap is observed at $\mathbf{Q}_\text{IC}=(0.3, 0.3, L)$ where the quasi-one-dimensional $α$ and $β$ sheets consisting of the Fermi surfaces are in good nesting conditions. $L$ modulated intensity of the low-energy IC magnetic fluctuations and our RPA calculations indicate that the superconducting gaps regarding the $α$ and $β$ sheets have the horizontal line nodes.

YUI and HANA: Control and Visualization Programs for HRC in J-PARC

We developed control and visualization programs, YUI and HANA, for High- Resolution Chopper spectrometer (HRC) installed at BL12 in MLF, J-PARC. YUI is a comprehensive program to control DAQ-middleware, the accessories, and sample environment devices. HANA is a program for the data transformation and visualization of inelastic neutron scattering spectra. In this paper, we describe the basic system structures and unique functions of these programs from the viewpoint of users.

63,65Cu Nuclear Resonance Study of the Coupled Spin Dimers and Chains Compound Cu2Fe2Ge4O13

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) of Cu have been measured in a coupled spin dimers and chains compound Cu2Fe2Ge4O13. Cu NQR has also been measured in an isostructural material Cu2Sc2Ge4O13 including only spin dimers. Comparison of the temperature dependence of the 63Cu nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate between the two compounds reveals that the Fe chains in Cu2Fe2Ge4O13 do not change a spin gap energy of the Cu dimers from that in Cu2Sc2Ge4O13, contributing additionally to the relaxation rate at the Cu site. A modestly large internal field of 3.39 T was observed at the Cu site in the antiferromagnetic state of Cu2Fe2Ge4O13 at 4.2 K, which is partly because of quantum reduction of the ordered moment of a Cu atom. The internal field and the ordered moment of Cu are noncollinear due to large anisotropy of the hyperfine interaction at the Cu site. A model analysis of the internal field based on the fourfold planar coordination of Cu suggests that a 3d hole of the Cu2+ ion is mainly in the d(x2-y2) orbital state.

Spin Density Wave in Insulating Ferromagnetic Frustrated Chain LiCuVO$_4$

We study field induced quantum phase in weakly-coupled ferromagnetic frustrated chain LiCuVO$_4$ by neutron diffraction technique. A new incommensurate magnetic peak is observed at $H \ge 8.5$ T. The field dependent propagation vector is identified with the spin density wave correlation in the theoretically predicted magnetic quadrupole order. Quantum fluctuation, geometrical frustration, and interchain interaction induce the exotic spin density wave long-range order in the insulating magnet.
