Holographic chaos, pole-skipping, and regularity

We investigate the "pole-skipping" phenomenon in holographic chaos. According to the pole-skipping, the energy-density Green's function is not unique at a special point in complex momentum plane. This arises because the bulk field equation has two regular near-horizon solutions at the special point. We study the regularity of two solutions more carefully using curvature invariants. In the upper-half $ω$-plane, one solution, which is normally interpreted as the outgoing mode, is in general singular at the future horizon and produces a curvature singularity. However, at the special point, both solutions are indeed regular. Moreover, the incoming mode cannot be uniquely defined at the special point due to these solutions.

Nonuniqueness of Green's functions at special points

We investigate a new property of retarded Green's functions using AdS/CFT. The Green's functions are not unique at special points in complex momentum space. This arises because there is no unique incoming mode at the horizon and is similar to the "pole-skipping" phenomenon in holographic chaos. Our examples include the bulk scalar field, the bulk Maxwell vector and scalar modes, and the shear mode of gravitational perturbations. In these examples, the special points are always located at $ω_\star = -i(2πT)$ with appropriate values of complex wave number.

Pole-skipping with finite-coupling corrections

Recently, it is shown that many Green's functions are not unique at special points in complex momentum space using AdS/CFT. This phenomenon is similar to the pole-skipping in holographic chaos, and the special points are typically located at $ω_n = -(2πT)ni$ with appropriate values of complex wave number $q_n$. We study finite-coupling corrections to special points. As examples, we consider four-derivative corrections to gravitational perturbations and four-dimensional Maxwell perturbations. While $ω_n$ is uncorrected, $q_n$ is corrected at finite coupling. Some special points disappear at particular values of higher-derivative couplings. Special point locations of the Maxwell scalar and vector modes are related to each other by the electromagnetic duality.

Holographic superfluid flows with a localized repulsive potential

We investigate a holographic model of superfluid flows with an external repulsive potential. When the strength of the potential is sufficiently weak, we analytically construct two steady superfluid flow solutions. As the strength of the potential is increased, the two solutions merge into a single critical solution at a critical strength, and then disappear above the critical value, as predicted by a saddle-node bifurcation theory. We also analyze the spectral function of fluctuations around the solutions under a certain decoupling approximation.

The enhanced holographic superconductor: is it possible?

It is known that time-dependent perturbations can enhance superconductivity and increase the critical temperature. If this phenomenon happens to high-T_c superconductors, one could obtain room-temperature superconductors, but this is still an open issue experimentally. Meanwhile, we would like to understand this phenomenon from gravity dual and see if the enhancement is possible for holographic superconductors. Previous work (arXiv:1104.4098 [hep-th]) has studied this issue by adding a "time-dependent chemical potential," but their analysis is questionable as a true dynamic equilibrium. In particular, the AdS boundary does not supply energy to the bulk spacetime in their setup. A more appropriate way to discuss the enhancement is to add a time-dependent vector potential, i.e., a time-dependent electric field. However, the enhancement does not occur for holographic superconductors.

The Incompressible Rindler fluid versus the Schwarzschild-AdS fluid

We study the proposal by Bredberg et al. (1006.1902), where the fluid is defined by the Brown-York tensor on a timelike surface at r=r_c in black hole backgrounds. We consider both Rindler space and the Schwarzschild-AdS (SAdS) black hole. The former describes an incompressible fluid, whereas the latter describes the vanishing bulk viscosity at arbitrary r_c, but these two results do not contradict with each other. We also find an interesting "coincidence" with the black hole membrane paradigm which gives a negative bulk viscosity. In order to show these results, we rewrite the hydrodynamic stress tensor via metric perturbations using the conservation equation. The resulting expressions are suitable to compare with the Brown-York tensor.

Inhomogeneous charged black hole solutions in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetime

We investigate static inhomogeneous charged planar black hole solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell system in an asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetime. Within the framework of linear perturbations, the solutions are numerically and analytically constructed from the Reissner-Nordström-AdS black hole solution. The perturbation analysis predicts that the Cauchy horizon always disappears for any wavelength perturbation, supporting the strong cosmic censorship conjecture. For extremal black holes, we analytically show that an observer freely falling into the black hole feels infinite tidal force at the horizon for any long wavelength perturbation, even though the Kretschmann scalar curvature invariant remains small.

Dynamic universality class of large-N gauge theories

In dynamic critical phenomena, singular behaviors appear not only in the order parameter but also in the other transport coefficients (due to the mode-mode coupling). However, this effect has not been observed in the AdS/CFT duality. We point out that this mode-mode coupling is suppressed by 1/N^2 in the large-N gauge theories which correspond to model H in the classification of Hohenberg and Halperin. Thus, the effect cannot be seen in the classical supergravity approximation. We illustrate this point using the example of the N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory at a finite chemical potential. We also discuss the implications of this result to heavy-ion collisions.

On two pieces of folklore in the AdS/CFT duality

In the AdS/CFT duality, it is often said that a local symmetry in a bulk theory corresponds to a global symmetry in the corresponding boundary theory, but the global symmetry can become local when one couples with an external source. As a result, the GKP-Witten relation gives a response function instead of a Green function. We explore this point in details using the example of holographic superconductors. We point out that these points play a crucial role to interpret the holographic London equation properly.

Vortex flow for a holographic superconductor

We investigate energy dissipation associated with the motion of the scalar condensate in a holographic superconductor model constructed from the charged scalar field coupled to the Maxwell field. Upon application of constant magnetic and electric fields, we analytically construct the vortex flow solution, and find the vortex flow resistance near the second-order phase transition where the scalar condensate begins. The characteristic feature of the non-equilibrium state agrees with the one predicted by the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau(TDGL) theory. We evaluate the kinetic coefficient in the TDGL equation along the line of the second-order phase transition. At zero magnetic field, the other coefficients in the TDGL equation are also evaluated just below the critical temperature.

Vortex lattice for a holographic superconductor

We investigate the vortex lattice solution in a (2+1)-dimensional holographic model of superconductors constructed from a charged scalar condensate. The solution is obtained perturbatively near the second-order phase transition and is a holographic realization of the Abrikosov lattice. Below a critical value of magnetic field, the solution has a lower free energy than the normal state. Both the free energy density and the superconducting current are expressed by nonlocal functions, but they reduce to the expressions in the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory at long wavelength. As a result, a triangular lattice becomes the most favorable solution thermodynamically as in the GL theory of type II superconductors.

Causal hydrodynamics of gauge theory plasmas from AdS/CFT duality

We study causal hydrodynamics (Israel-Stewart theory) of gauge theory plasmas from the AdS/CFT duality. Causal hydrodynamics requires new transport coefficients (relaxation times) and we compute them for a number of supersymmetric gauge theories including the N=4 SYM. However, the relaxation times obtained from the "shear mode" do not agree with the ones from the "sound mode," which implies that the Israel-Stewart theory is not a sufficient framework to describe the gauge theory plasmas.

On scattering off the extreme Reissner-Nordström black hole in N=2 supergravity

The scattering amplitudes for the perturbed fields of the N=2 supergravity about the extreme Reissner-Nordström black hole is examined. Owing to the fact that the extreme hole is a BPS state of the theory and preserves an unbroken global supersymmetry(N=1), the scattering amplitudes of the component fields should be related to each other. In this paper, we derive the formula of the transformation of the scattering amplitudes.

On Divergence of Decoherence Factor in Quantum Cosmology

To discuss the quantum to classical transition in quantum cosmology, we study the decoherence factor and the peak of the Wigner function, which respectively represent the degree of decoherence and the degree to which the classical motion of the Universe is defined, in a Robertson-Walker universe model coupled with a scalar field. It is known that the decoherence factor is divergent in some cases. This implies that perfect decoherence occurs, and classical correlation criterion fails. In this paper we discuss the divergence of the decoherence factor in some detail and obtain the constraints for decoherence factor to be convergent, making use of the arbitrariness defining the reduced density matrix. The result is discussed in connection with the arbitrariness of {\it system/environment} splitting.
