The averaged null energy condition on holographic evaporating black holes

We examine the averaged null energy condition~(ANEC) for strongly coupled fields, along the event horizon of an evaporating black hole by using the AdS/CFT duality. First, we consider a holographic model of a $3$-dimensional evaporating black hole with a perturbed 4-dimensional black droplet geometry as the bulk dual, and investigate how negative energy flux going into the boundary black hole horizon appears. We show that the ingoing negative energy flux always appears at the boundary black hole horizon when the horizon area decreases. Second, we test the ANEC in a holographic model of a $4$-dimensional asymptotically flat dynamical black hole, which describes the formation and subsequent evaporation of a spherically symmetric black hole. By applying the "bulk-no-shortcut principle", we show that the ANEC is always satisfied when the local null energy is averaged with a wieght function along the incomplete null geodesic on the event horizon from beginning of the formation to the final instant of the black hole evaporation. Our results indicate that the total ingoing negative energy flux is compensated by a large amount of positive energy flux in the early stage of the black hole formation.

Conformally invariant averaged null energy condition from AdS/CFT

We study the compatibility of the AdS/CFT duality with the bulk and boundary causality, and derive a conformally invariant averaged null energy condition (CANEC) for quantum field theories in 3 and 5-dimensional curved boundaries. This is the generalization of the averaged null energy condition (ANEC) in Minkowski spacetime to curved boundaries, where null energy is averaged along the null line with appropriate weight for conformal invariance. For this purpose we take, as our guiding principle, the no-bulk-shortcut theorem of Gao and Wald, which essentially asserts that when going from one point to another on the boundary, one cannot take a "shortcut through the bulk". We also discuss the relationship between bulk vs boundary causality and the weak cosmic censorship.

Cosmic Censorship at Large D: Stability analysis in polarized AdS black branes (holes)

We test the cosmic censorship conjecture for a class of polarized AdS black branes (holes) in the Einstein-Maxwell theory at large number of dimensions $D$. We first derive a new set of effective equations describing the dynamics of the polarized black branes (holes) to leading order in the $1/D$ expansion. In the case of black branes, we construct `mushroom-type' static solutions from the effective equations, where a spherical horizon is connected with an asymptotic planar horizon through a `neck' which is locally black-string shape. We argue that this neck part (of black string) cannot be pinched off dynamically from the perspective of thermodynamical stability. In the case of black holes, we show that the equatorial plane on the spherical horizon cannot be sufficiently squashed unless the specific heat is positive. We also discuss that the solutions are stable against linear perturbation, agreeing with the thermodynamical argument. These results suggest that Gregory-Laflamme type instability does not occur at the neck, in favor of the cosmic censorship.

Holographic superfluid flows with a localized repulsive potential

We investigate a holographic model of superfluid flows with an external repulsive potential. When the strength of the potential is sufficiently weak, we analytically construct two steady superfluid flow solutions. As the strength of the potential is increased, the two solutions merge into a single critical solution at a critical strength, and then disappear above the critical value, as predicted by a saddle-node bifurcation theory. We also analyze the spectral function of fluctuations around the solutions under a certain decoupling approximation.

Violation of cosmic censorship in dynamical $p$-brane systems

We study the cosmic censorship of dynamical $p$-brane systems in a $D$-dimensional background. This is the generalization of the analysis in the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory, which was discussed by Horne and Horowitz [Phys. Rev. D 48, R5457 (1993)]. We show that a timelike curvature singularity generically appears from an asymptotic region in the time evolution of the $p$-brane solution. Since we can set regular and smooth initial data in a dynamical M5-brane system in 11-dimensional supergravity, this implies a violation of cosmic censorship.

A rotating hairy AdS3 black hole with the metric having only one Killing vector field

We perturbatively construct a three-dimensional rotating AdS black hole with a real scalar hair. We choose the mass of a scalar field slightly above the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound and impose a more general boundary condition for the bulk scalar field at AdS infinity. We first show that rotating BTZ black holes are unstable against superradiant modes under our more general boundary condition. Next we construct a rotating hairy black hole perturbatively with respect to a small amplitude $ε$ of the scalar field, up to $O(ε^4)$. The lumps of non-linearly perturbed geometry admit only one Killing vector field and co-rotate with the black hole, and it shows no dissipation. We numerically show that the entropy of our hairy black hole is larger than that of the BTZ black hole with the same energy and the angular momentum. This indicates, at least in the perturbative level, that our rotating hairy black hole in lumpy geometry can be the endpoint of the superradiant instability.

A holographic superconductor model in a spatially anisotropic background

We investigate an anisotropic model of superconductors in the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory with a charged scalar field. It is found that the critical temperature decreases as the anisotropy becomes large. We then estimate the energy gap of the superconductor, and find that the ratio of the energy gap to the critical temperature increases as the anisotropy increases and so it is larger than that in the isotropic case. We also find that peudogap appears due to the anisotropy.

Can a stationary Bianchi black brane have momentum along the direction with no translational symmetry?

Bianchi black branes (black brane solutions with homogeneous but anisotropic horizons classified by the Bianchi type) provide a simple holographic setting with lattice structures taken into account. In the case of holographic superconductor, we have a persistent current with lattices. Accordingly, we expect that in the dual gravity side, a black brane should carry some momentum along a direction of lattice structure, where translational invariance is broken. Motivated by this expectation, we consider whether---and if possible, in what circumstances---a Bianchi black brane can have momentum along a direction of no-translational invariance. First, we show that this {\it cannot} be the case for a certain class of stationary Bianchi black brane solutions in the Einstein-Maxwell-dilation theory. Then we also show that this {\it can} be the case for some Bianchi VII$_0$ black branes by numerically constructing such a solution in the Einstein-Maxwell theory with an additional vector field having a source term. The horizon of this solution admits a translational invariance on the horizon and conveys momentum (and is "rotating" when compactified). However this translational invariance is broken just outside the horizon. This indicates the existence of a black brane solution which is regular but non-analytic at the horizon, thereby evading the black hole rigidity theorem.

Persistent Superconductor Currents in Holographic Lattices

We consider a persistent superconductor current along the direction with no translational symmetry in a holographic gravity model. Incorporating a lattice structure into the model, we numerically construct novel solutions of hairy charged stationary black brane with momentum/rotation along the latticed direction. The lattice structure prevents the horizon from rotating, and the total momentum is only carried by matter fields outside the black brane horizon. This is consistent with the black hole rigidity theorem, and suggests that in dual field theory with lattices, superconductor currents are made up by "composite" fields, rather than "fractionalized" degrees of freedom. We also show that our solutions are consistent with the superfluid hydrodynamics.

Stripe Instabilities of Geometries with Hyperscaling Violation

We study the dynamical stripe instabilities on the geometries with hyperscaling violation in the IR, which asymptotically approach AdS_4 in the UV. The instabilities break the translational invariance spontaneously and are induced by the axion term ~ a F \wedge F in the bulk action. We first study the perturbation equations in the probe limit, and find that there is a strong correlation between the stripe instabilities caused by the axion term and parameters of the theories which determine the IR hyperscaling violation. Contrary to the IR AdS_2 case, the effect of the axion term for the stripe instabilities can be enhanced/suppressed at low temperature depending on the parameters. For a certain one-parameter family of the hyperscaling violation, we find the onset of the stripe instability analytically in the axion coupling tuned model. For more generic parameter range of hyperscaling violation, we study the instability onset by searching for the zero mode numerically on the full geometries. We also argue that quite analogous results hold, after taking into account the graviton fluctuation, i.e., beyond the probe limit.

Thermalization of boosted charged AdS black holes by an ionic Lattice

We investigate thermalization process of boosted charged AdS black holes in the Einstein-Maxwell system in the presence of an ionic lattice formed by spatially varying chemical potential. We calculate perturbations of the black holes by the lattice and investigate how the momentum relaxation occurs through umklapp scattering. In the WKB approximation, both of the momentum relaxation rate and entropy production rate are analytically obtained and the first law of black holes is derived in the irreversible process. Interestingly, both the analytical and numerical calculations show that the momentum relaxation rate or the entropy production rate does not approach zero in the zero temperature limit unless the velocity of the black hole is zero. In the dual field theory side, this indicates that persistent current does not exist even in the zero temperature limit, implying that the "ionic lattice" does not behave as a perfect lattice in a strongly coupled dual field theory.

Inhomogeneous charged black hole solutions in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetime

We investigate static inhomogeneous charged planar black hole solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell system in an asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetime. Within the framework of linear perturbations, the solutions are numerically and analytically constructed from the Reissner-Nordström-AdS black hole solution. The perturbation analysis predicts that the Cauchy horizon always disappears for any wavelength perturbation, supporting the strong cosmic censorship conjecture. For extremal black holes, we analytically show that an observer freely falling into the black hole feels infinite tidal force at the horizon for any long wavelength perturbation, even though the Kretschmann scalar curvature invariant remains small.

Singularities in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes

We consider singularity theorems in asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetimes. In the first part, we discuss the global methods used to show geodesic incompleteness and see that when the conditions imposed in Hawking and Penrose's singularity theorem are satisfied, a singularity must appear in asymptotically AdS spacetime. The recent observations of turbulent instability of asymptotically AdS spacetimes indicate that AdS spacetimes are generically singular even if a closed trapped surface, which is one of the main conditions of the Hawking and Penrose theorem, does not exist in the initial hypersurface. This may lead one to expect to obtain a singularity theorem without imposing the existence of a trapped set in asymptotically AdS spacetimes. This, however, does not appear to be the case. We consider, within the use of global methods, two such attempts and discuss difficulties in eliminating conditions concerning a trapped set from singularity theorems in asymptotically AdS spacetimes. Then in the second part, we restrict our attention to the specific case of spherically symmetric, perfect fluid systems in asymptotically AdS spacetime, and show that under a certain condition concerning dynamics of the fluid, a closed trapped surface must form, and as a combined result with Hawking and Penrose's theorem, that such a spacetime must be singular.

Towards the Lattice Effects on the Holographic Superconductor

We study the lattice effects on the simple holographic toy model; massive U(1) gauge theory for the bulk action. The mass term is for the U(1) gauge symmetry breaking in the bulk. Without the lattice, the AC conductivity of this model shows similar results to the holographic superconductor with the energy gap. On this model, we introduce the lattice effects, which induce the periodic potential and break the translational invariance of the boundary field theory. Without the lattice, due to the translational invariance and the mass term, there is a delta function peak at zero frequency on the AC conductivity. We study how this delta function peak is influenced by the lattice effects, which we introduce perturbatively. In the probe limit, we evaluate the perturbative corrections to the conductivities at very small frequency limit. We find that the delta function peak remains, even after the lattice effects are introduced, although its weight reduces perturbatively. We also study the lattice wavenumber dependence of this weight. Our result suggests that in the U(1) symmetry breaking phase, the delta function peak is stable against the lattice effects at least perturbatively.

On two pieces of folklore in the AdS/CFT duality

In the AdS/CFT duality, it is often said that a local symmetry in a bulk theory corresponds to a global symmetry in the corresponding boundary theory, but the global symmetry can become local when one couples with an external source. As a result, the GKP-Witten relation gives a response function instead of a Green function. We explore this point in details using the example of holographic superconductors. We point out that these points play a crucial role to interpret the holographic London equation properly.

The final fate of instability of Reissner-Nordström-anti-de Sitter black holes by charged complex scalar fields

We investigate instability of 4-dimensional Reissner-Nordström-anti-de Sitter (RN-AdS$_4$) black holes with various topologies by charged scalar field perturbations. We numerically find that the RN-AdS$_4$ black holes become unstable against the linear perturbations below a critical temperature. It is analytically shown that charge extraction from the black holes occurs during the unstable evolution. To explore the end state of the instability, we perturbatively construct static black hole solutions with the scalar hair near the critical temperature. It is numerically found that the entropy of the hairly black hole is always larger than the one of the unstable RN-AdS$_4$ black hole in the microcanonical ensemble. Our results support the speculation that the black hole with charged scalar hair always appears as the final fate of the instability of the RN-AdS$_4$ black hole.

Vortex flow for a holographic superconductor

We investigate energy dissipation associated with the motion of the scalar condensate in a holographic superconductor model constructed from the charged scalar field coupled to the Maxwell field. Upon application of constant magnetic and electric fields, we analytically construct the vortex flow solution, and find the vortex flow resistance near the second-order phase transition where the scalar condensate begins. The characteristic feature of the non-equilibrium state agrees with the one predicted by the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau(TDGL) theory. We evaluate the kinetic coefficient in the TDGL equation along the line of the second-order phase transition. At zero magnetic field, the other coefficients in the TDGL equation are also evaluated just below the critical temperature.

Vortex lattice for a holographic superconductor

We investigate the vortex lattice solution in a (2+1)-dimensional holographic model of superconductors constructed from a charged scalar condensate. The solution is obtained perturbatively near the second-order phase transition and is a holographic realization of the Abrikosov lattice. Below a critical value of magnetic field, the solution has a lower free energy than the normal state. Both the free energy density and the superconducting current are expressed by nonlocal functions, but they reduce to the expressions in the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory at long wavelength. As a result, a triangular lattice becomes the most favorable solution thermodynamically as in the GL theory of type II superconductors.

Negative Energy Density in Calabi-Yau Compactifications

We show that a large class of supersymmetric compactifications, including all simply connected Calabi-Yau and G_2 manifolds, have classical configurations with negative energy density as seen from four dimensions. In fact, the energy density can be arbitrarily negative -- it is unbounded from below. Nevertheless, positive energy theorems show that the total ADM energy remains positive. Physical consequences of the negative energy density include new thermal instabilities, and possible violations of cosmic censorship.

Chronology Protection and Non-Naked Singularity

We test the chronology protection conjecture in classical general relativity by investigating finitely vicious space-times. First we present singularity theorems in finitely vicious space-times by imposing some restrictions on the chronology violating sets. In the theorems we can refer to the location of an occurring singularity and do not assume any asymptotic conditions such as the existence of null infinities. Further introducing the concept of a non-naked singularity, we show that a restricted class of chronology violations cannot arise if all occurring singularities are the non-naked singularities. Our results suggest that the causal feature of the occurring singularities is the key to prevent the appearance of causality violation.

Do naked singularities generically occur in generalized theories of gravity?

A new mechanism for causing naked singularities is found in an effective superstring theory. We investigate the gravitational collapse in a spherically symmetric Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton system in the presence of a pure cosmological constant "potential", where the system has no static black hole solution. We show that once gravitational collapse occurs in the system, naked singularities necessarily appear in the sense that the field equations break down in the domain of outer communications. This suggests that in generalized theories of gravity, the non-minimally coupled fields generically cause naked singularities in the process of gravitational collapse if the system has no static or stationary black hole solution.
