Holographic chaos, pole-skipping, and regularity

We investigate the "pole-skipping" phenomenon in holographic chaos. According to the pole-skipping, the energy-density Green's function is not unique at a special point in complex momentum plane. This arises because the bulk field equation has two regular near-horizon solutions at the special point. We study the regularity of two solutions more carefully using curvature invariants. In the upper-half $ω$-plane, one solution, which is normally interpreted as the outgoing mode, is in general singular at the future horizon and produces a curvature singularity. However, at the special point, both solutions are indeed regular. Moreover, the incoming mode cannot be uniquely defined at the special point due to these solutions.

Nonuniqueness of Green's functions at special points

We investigate a new property of retarded Green's functions using AdS/CFT. The Green's functions are not unique at special points in complex momentum space. This arises because there is no unique incoming mode at the horizon and is similar to the "pole-skipping" phenomenon in holographic chaos. Our examples include the bulk scalar field, the bulk Maxwell vector and scalar modes, and the shear mode of gravitational perturbations. In these examples, the special points are always located at $ω_\star = -i(2πT)$ with appropriate values of complex wave number.

Pole-skipping with finite-coupling corrections

Recently, it is shown that many Green's functions are not unique at special points in complex momentum space using AdS/CFT. This phenomenon is similar to the pole-skipping in holographic chaos, and the special points are typically located at $ω_n = -(2πT)ni$ with appropriate values of complex wave number $q_n$. We study finite-coupling corrections to special points. As examples, we consider four-derivative corrections to gravitational perturbations and four-dimensional Maxwell perturbations. While $ω_n$ is uncorrected, $q_n$ is corrected at finite coupling. Some special points disappear at particular values of higher-derivative couplings. Special point locations of the Maxwell scalar and vector modes are related to each other by the electromagnetic duality.

The enhanced holographic superconductor: is it possible?

It is known that time-dependent perturbations can enhance superconductivity and increase the critical temperature. If this phenomenon happens to high-T_c superconductors, one could obtain room-temperature superconductors, but this is still an open issue experimentally. Meanwhile, we would like to understand this phenomenon from gravity dual and see if the enhancement is possible for holographic superconductors. Previous work (arXiv:1104.4098 [hep-th]) has studied this issue by adding a "time-dependent chemical potential," but their analysis is questionable as a true dynamic equilibrium. In particular, the AdS boundary does not supply energy to the bulk spacetime in their setup. A more appropriate way to discuss the enhancement is to add a time-dependent vector potential, i.e., a time-dependent electric field. However, the enhancement does not occur for holographic superconductors.

The Incompressible Rindler fluid versus the Schwarzschild-AdS fluid

We study the proposal by Bredberg et al. (1006.1902), where the fluid is defined by the Brown-York tensor on a timelike surface at r=r_c in black hole backgrounds. We consider both Rindler space and the Schwarzschild-AdS (SAdS) black hole. The former describes an incompressible fluid, whereas the latter describes the vanishing bulk viscosity at arbitrary r_c, but these two results do not contradict with each other. We also find an interesting "coincidence" with the black hole membrane paradigm which gives a negative bulk viscosity. In order to show these results, we rewrite the hydrodynamic stress tensor via metric perturbations using the conservation equation. The resulting expressions are suitable to compare with the Brown-York tensor.

Dynamic universality class of large-N gauge theories

In dynamic critical phenomena, singular behaviors appear not only in the order parameter but also in the other transport coefficients (due to the mode-mode coupling). However, this effect has not been observed in the AdS/CFT duality. We point out that this mode-mode coupling is suppressed by 1/N^2 in the large-N gauge theories which correspond to model H in the classification of Hohenberg and Halperin. Thus, the effect cannot be seen in the classical supergravity approximation. We illustrate this point using the example of the N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory at a finite chemical potential. We also discuss the implications of this result to heavy-ion collisions.

Critical phenomena in the AdS/CFT duality

We review black holes with second-order phase transition in string theory (R-charged black holes and holographic superconductors) and review their static and dynamic critical phenomena. Holographic superconductors have conventional mean-field values for static critical exponents, but R-charged black holes have unconventional ones. For dynamic universality class, holographic superconductors belong to model A, and R-charged black holes belong to model B in the classification of Hohenberg and Halperin. The analysis suggests that some black holes do obey the theory of critical phenomena in condensed matter physics.

On two pieces of folklore in the AdS/CFT duality

In the AdS/CFT duality, it is often said that a local symmetry in a bulk theory corresponds to a global symmetry in the corresponding boundary theory, but the global symmetry can become local when one couples with an external source. As a result, the GKP-Witten relation gives a response function instead of a Green function. We explore this point in details using the example of holographic superconductors. We point out that these points play a crucial role to interpret the holographic London equation properly.

The shear viscosity of holographic superfluids

We study the ratio of the shear viscosity to the entropy density for various holographic superfluids. For the s-wave case, the ratio has the universal value 1/(4pi) as in various holographic models. For the p-wave case, there are two shear viscosity coefficients because of the anisotropic boundary spacetime, and one coefficient has the universal value. For the (p+ip)-wave case, the existing technique is not applicable since there is no tensor mode of metric perturbations which decouples from Yang-Mills perturbations. Our results indicate that the shear viscosity does not show a singular behavior at the critical point for holographic superfluids.

Vortex lattice for a holographic superconductor

We investigate the vortex lattice solution in a (2+1)-dimensional holographic model of superconductors constructed from a charged scalar condensate. The solution is obtained perturbatively near the second-order phase transition and is a holographic realization of the Abrikosov lattice. Below a critical value of magnetic field, the solution has a lower free energy than the normal state. Both the free energy density and the superconducting current are expressed by nonlocal functions, but they reduce to the expressions in the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory at long wavelength. As a result, a triangular lattice becomes the most favorable solution thermodynamically as in the GL theory of type II superconductors.

Causal hydrodynamics of gauge theory plasmas from AdS/CFT duality

We study causal hydrodynamics (Israel-Stewart theory) of gauge theory plasmas from the AdS/CFT duality. Causal hydrodynamics requires new transport coefficients (relaxation times) and we compute them for a number of supersymmetric gauge theories including the N=4 SYM. However, the relaxation times obtained from the "shear mode" do not agree with the ones from the "sound mode," which implies that the Israel-Stewart theory is not a sufficient framework to describe the gauge theory plasmas.

The BRST quantization and the no-ghost theorem for AdS_3

In our previous papers, we prove the no-ghost theorem without light-cone directions (hep-th/0005002, hep-th/0303051). We point out that our results are valid for more general backgrounds. In particular, we prove the no-ghost theorem for AdS_3 in the context of the BRST quantization (with the standard restriction on the spin). We compare our BRST proof with the OCQ proof and establish the BRST-OCQ equivalence for AdS_3. The key in both approaches lies in the certain structure of the matter Hilbert space as a product of two Verma modules. We also present the no-ghost theorem in the most general form.

The no-ghost theorem in curved backgrounds with a timelike u(1): NSR string

It is well-known that the standard no-ghost theorem is valid as long as the background has the light-cone directions. We prove the no-ghost theorem for the NSR string when only the timelike direction is flat. This is done by the BRST quantization, using the technique of Frenkel, Garland and Zuckerman and our previous results for the bosonic string. The theorem actually applies as long as the timelike direction is written as a u(1) SCFT.

Zero Mode Divergence Problem in String Theory

For $2D$ string theory, the perturbative $S$-matrices are not well-defined due to a zero mode divergence. Although there exist formal procedures to make the integral convergent, their physical meanings are unclear. We describe a method to obtain finite $S$-matrices physically to justify the formal schemes. The scheme uses asymptotic states by wave packets which fall faster than exponentials. It is shown that the scheme gives well-defined $S$-matrices and justifies the formal shifted Virasoro-Shapiro amplitude for simple processes. The tree-level unitarity for these processes is also shown. We point out a problem in this scheme.
