Light bending in radiation background

We consider the velocity shift of light in presence of radiation emitted by a black body. Within geometric optics formalism we calculate the bending angle of a light ray when there is a gradient in the energy density. We model the bending for two simplified cases. The bending angle is proportional to the inverse square power of the impact parameter (∝1/b2\propto 1/b^2) when the dilution of energy density is spherically symmetric. The bending angle is inversely proportional to the impact parameter (∝1/b\propto 1/b) when the energy density dilutes cylindrically. Assuming that a neutron star is an isothermal black body, we estimate the order of magnitude for such bending angle and compare it with the bending angle by magnetic field.

Vacuum quark condensate, chiral Lagrangian, and Bose-Einstein statistics

In a series of articles it was recently claimed that the quantum chromodynamic (QCD) condensates are not the properties of the vacuum but of the hadrons and are confined inside them. We point out that this claim is incompatible with the chiral Lagrangian and Bose-Einstein statistics of the Goldstone bosons (pions) in chiral limit and conclude that the quark condensate must be the property of the QCD vacuum.

Light bending by nonlinear electrodynamics under strong electric and magnetic field

We calculate the bending angles of light under the strong electric and magnetic fields by a charged black hole and a magnetized neutron star according to the nonlinear electrodynamics of Euler-Heisenberg interaction. The bending angle of light by the electric field of charged black hole is computed from geometric optics and a general formula is derived for light bending valid for any orientation of the magnetic dipole. The astronomical significance of the light bending by magnetic field of a neutron star is discussed.

Annihilation Rate of Heavy 0−+0^{-+} Quarkonium in Relativistic Salpeter Method

Two-photon and two-gluon annihilation rates of ηcη_c, ηc′η'_c, ηbη_b and ηb′η'_b are estimated in the relativistic Salpeter method. By solving the full Salpeter equation with a well defined relativistic wave function, we estimate Mηc=2.979±0.432M_{η_c}=2.979\pm 0.432 GeV, Mηc′=3.566±0.437M_{η'_c}=3.566\pm 0.437 GeV, Mηb=9.364±1.120M_{η_b}=9.364\pm 1.120 GeV and Mηb′=9.941±1.112M_{η'_b}=9.941\pm 1.112 GeV. We calculated the transition amplitude using the Mandelstam formalism and estimate the decay widths: Γ(ηc→2γ)=7.14±0.95Γ(η_c \to 2γ)=7.14\pm 0.95 KeV, Γ(ηc′→2γ)=4.44±0.48Γ(η'_c \to 2γ)=4.44\pm 0.48 KeV, Γ(ηb→2γ)=0.384±0.047Γ(η_b \to 2γ)=0.384\pm 0.047 KeV and Γ(ηb′→2γ)=0.191±0.025Γ(η'_b \to 2γ)=0.191\pm 0.025 KeV. We also give estimates of total widths by the two-gluon decay rates: Γtot(ηc)=19.6±2.6Γ_{tot}(η_c)=19.6\pm 2.6 MeV, Γtot(ηc′)=12.1±1.3Γ_{tot}(η'_c)=12.1\pm 1.3 MeV, Γtot(ηb)=6.98±0.85Γ_{tot}(η_b)=6.98\pm 0.85 MeV and Γtot(ηb)=3.47±0.45Γ_{tot}(η_b)=3.47\pm 0.45 MeV.

Meson Mass at Large Baryon Chemical Potential in Dense QCD

We reexamine the quark mass induced term in chiral Lagrangian in color-flavor locking phase in dense QCD, and show that the meson mass term is determined by three independent invariants under chiral-axial symmetry, and a meson mass is given in terms of the quark mass, gap, and the chemical potential by mπ2∼mq2ΔΔˉ/μ2ln⁡(μ2/Δ2)m_π^2\sim m_q^2Δ\barΔ/μ^2\ln(μ^2/Δ^2). Thus mesons become massless as μ→∞μ\to\infty.

Higher Dimensional Operator Corrections to the Goldstino Goldberger-Treiman Vertices

The goldstino-matter interactions given by the Goldberger-Treiman relations can receive higher dimensional operator corrections of O(q2/M2) O(q^{2}/M^{2}), where MM denotes the mass of the mediators through which SUSY breaking is transmitted. These corrections in the gauge mediated SUSY breaking models arise from loop diagrams, and an explicit calculation of such corrections is presented. It is emphasized that the Goldberger-Treiman vertices are valid only below the mediator scale and at higher energies goldstinos decouple from the MSSM fields. The implication of this fact on gravitino cosmology in GMSB models is mentioned.

On the Interactions of Light Gravitinos

In models of spontaneously broken supersymmetry, certain light gravitino processes are governed by the coupling of its Goldstino components. The rules for constructing SUSY and gauge invariant actions involving the Goldstino couplings to matter and gauge fields are presented. The explicit operator construction is found to be at variance with some previously reported claims. A phenomenological consequence arising from light gravitino interactions in supernova is reexamined and scrutinized.
