Neutrino mixing in the seesaw model

In the seesaw model with hierarchical Dirac masses, the neutrino mixing angle exhibits the behavior of a narrow resonance. In general, the angle is strongly suppressed, but it can be maximal for special parameter values. We delineate the small regions in which this happens, for the two flavor problem. On the other hand, the physical neutrino masses are hierarchical, in general, except in a large part of the region in which the mixing angle is sizable, where they are nearly degenerate. Our general analysis is also applicable to the RGE of neutrino mass matrix, where we find analytic solutions for the running of physical parameters, in addition to a complex RGE invariant relating them. It is also shown that, if one mixing angle is small, the three neutrino problem reduces to two, two flavor problems.

A New Approach to Texture Analysis of Quark Mass Matrices

The triangular basis is proposed as an efficient way of analyzing general quark mass matrices. Applying the method to hermitian hierarchical matrices with five texture zeros, analytic predictions for quark mixing can be readily obtained. One unique texture pair is found most favorable with present data. Some remarks are also made concerning parallel textures between the up and down quark mass matrices with four zeros.

Direct CP violation in radiative b decays in and beyond the Standard Model

We consider the partial rate asymmetry in the inclusive decay modes b to s gamma and b to d gamma, concentrating on non-standard models with new charged Higgs interactions. We find that the charged Higgs contribution to the asymmetry for b to s gamma is small in such models due to a universal cancellation mechanism. The asymmetry is therefore difficult to distinguish experimentally from the Standard Model (SM) value, which is also small. The cancellation mechanism is found to be rendered inoperative in supersymmetry due to the presence of chargino loops. Unlike b to s gamma, the rate asymmetry for b to d gamma in Higgs models can be quite different from its SM value, generally ranging from -20% to +20%. Specific model calculations are performed for the Three-Higgs Doublet Model and the ``Top'' Two-Higgs Doublet Model to serve as illustrations. We also offer some suggestions that may be helpful to experimentalists in the detection of the inclusive mode b to d gamma.

Novel CP-violating Effects in B decays from Charged-Higgs in a Two-Higgs Doublet Model for the Top Quark

We explore charged-Higgs cp-violating effects in a specific type III two-Higgs doublet model which is theoretically attractive as it accommodates the large mass of the top quark in a natural fashion. Two new CP-violating phases arise from the right-handed up quark sector. We consider CP violation in both neutral and charged B decays. Some of the important findings are as follows. 1) Large direct-CP asymmetry is found to be possible for B+- to psi/J K+-. 2) Sizable D-anti-D mixing effect at the percent level is found to be admissible despite the stringent constraints from the data on K-anti-K mixing, b to s gamma and B to tau nu decays. 3) A simple but distinctive CP asymmetry pattern emerges in decays of B_d and B_s mesons, including B_d to psi/J K_S, D+ D-, and B_s to D_s+ D_s-, psi eta/eta^prime, psi/J K_S. 4) The effect of D-anti-D mixing on the CP asymmetry in B+- to D/anti-D K+- and on the extraction of the angle gamma of the unitarity triangle from such decays can be significant.

Classification and Application of Triangular Quark Mass Matrices

The hierarchical structure in the quark masses and mixings allows its ten physical parameters to be most conveniently encoded in mass matrices of the upper triangular form. We classify these matrices in the hierarchical, minimal parameter basis where the mismatch between the weak and mass eigenstates involves only small mixing angles. Ten such pairs are obtained for the up and down quarks. This analysis can be used to classify texture zeros of general mass matrices. For hermitian mass matrices with five texture zeros, this method yields immediately five pairs of textures with simple, analytic predictions for the quark mixings. Comparison with data indicates that, of the five pairs, three are disfavored, one is marginally acceptable, while the fifth fits well.

On the Interactions of Light Gravitinos

In models of spontaneously broken supersymmetry, certain light gravitino processes are governed by the coupling of its Goldstino components. The rules for constructing SUSY and gauge invariant actions involving the Goldstino couplings to matter and gauge fields are presented. The explicit operator construction is found to be at variance with some previously reported claims. A phenomenological consequence arising from light gravitino interactions in supernova is reexamined and scrutinized.

Polarization Measurements and T-Violation in Exclusive Semileptonic B Decays

We provide a general analysis of time reversal invariance violation in the exclusive semileptonic B decays B to D l nu and B to D* l nu. Measurements of the lepton and D* polarizations can be used to search for and identify non-standard model sources of T violation. Upper limits are placed on the T-odd polarization observables in both the supersymmetric R-parity conserving and R-parity breaking theories, as well as in some non-supersymmetric extensions of the standard model, including multi-Higgs-doublet models, leptoquark models, and left-right symmetric models. It is noted that many of these models allow for large T-violating polarization effects which could be within the reach of the planned B factories.

Testing Time Reversal Invariance in Exclusive Semileptonic B Meson Decays

We demonstrate that polarization measurements in exclusive semileptonic B decays are powerful tools for unraveling non-standard model sources of T-violation. Measurements of the transverse polarization of the tau lepton in the B to D tau nu and B to D* tau nu decays probe separately effective scalar and pseudoscalar CP-violating four-Fermi interactions, whereas the D* polarization in the B to D* l nu (l=e,mu) decay is sensitive to an effective right-handed quark current interaction. Two T-odd polarization structures exist involving the D* polarization and they can be isolated and studied separately. An estimate of these T-odd effects is also given in the context of supersymmetric theories.

Supersymmetric Time Reversal Violation in Semileptonic Decays of Charged Mesons

We provide a general analysis of time reversal violation arising from misalignment between quark and squark mass eigenstates. In particular, we focus on the possibility of large enhancement effects due to the top quark mass. For semileptonic decays of the charged mesons, K+→π0μ+νμK^+ \rightarrow π^0 μ^+ ν_μ, D+→K‾0μ+νμD^+ \rightarrow \overline{K}^0 μ^+ ν_μ, and B+→D‾0τ+ντB^+ \rightarrow \overline{D}^0 τ^+ ν_τ, the transverse polarization of the lepton Pl⊥P^{\bot}_l is a TT-odd observable that is of great experimental interest. It is noted that under favorable choice of parameters, Pμ⊥P^{\bot}_μ in Kμ3+K^+_{\mu3} decay can be detectable at the ongoing KEK experiment and it holds a promising prospect for discovery at the proposed BNL experiment. Furthermore, Pτ⊥P^{\bot}_τ in B±B^{\pm} decay could well be within the reach of BB factories, but Pμ⊥P^{\bot}_μ in D±D^{\pm} decay is not large enough for detection at the proposed ττ-charm factory.

T-Violation in K+→μ+νγK^+ \to μ^+ νγ Decay And Supersymmetry

Measurement of the transverse muon polarization Pμ⊥P^{\bot}_μ in the K+→μ+νγK^+ \rightarrow μ^+νγ decay will be attempted for the first time at the ongoing KEK E246 experiment and also at a proposed BNL experiment. We provide a general analysis of how Pμ⊥P^{\bot}_μ is sensitive to the physical CPCP-violating phases in new physics induced four-Fermi interactions, and then we calculate the dominant contributions to Pμ⊥P^{\bot}_μ from squark family mixings in generic supersymmetric models. Estimates of the upper bounds on Pμ⊥P^{\bot}_μ are also given. It is found that a supersymmetry-induced right-handed quark current from WW boson exchange gives an upper limit on Pμ⊥P^{\bot}_μ as large as a few per cent, whereas with charged-Higgs-exchange induced pseudoscalar interaction, Pμ⊥P^{\bot}_μ is no larger than a few tenths of a per cent. Possible correlations between the muon polarization measurements in K+→μ+νγK^+ \rightarrow μ^+νγ and K+→π0μ+νK^+ \rightarrow π^0μ^+ν decays are discussed, and distinctive patterns of this correlation from squark family-mixings and from the three-Higgs-doublet model are noted.

The Electroweak Chiral Lagrangian and CP-Violating Effects in Technicolor Theories

We estimate the CP-violating WWγWWγ and WWZWWZ anomalous form factors, arising from CP-violating interactions in extended technicolor theories, and discuss their future experimental detectability. The electric dipole moment of the WW boson is found to be as large as ${\cal O}(10^{-21}) \; \mbox{$e$ cm}$. We connect the CP-odd WWγWWγ and WWZWWZ couplings to the corresponding CP-violating electroweak chiral lagrangian operators. The electric dipole moments of the neutron and the electron in technicolor theories are estimated to be as large as ${\cal O}(10^{-26}) \; \mbox{$e$ cm}$ and ${\cal O}(10^{-29}) \; \mbox{$e$ cm}$ respectively. We also suggest the potential to observe large CP-violating technicolor effects in the decay t→b+W+t \rightarrow b + W^+.
