Inferring the nature of active neutrinos: Dirac or Majorana?

The nature of a neutrino, whether it is a Dirac type or Majorana type, may be comprehensively probed using their quantum statistical properties. If the neutrino is a Majorana fermion, then by definition it is identical and indistinguishable from the corresponding antineutrino. When a Majorana neutrino and antineutrino are pair produced, the corresponding state has to obey the Pauli principle unlike in the Dirac case. We use this property to distinguish between the two cases using the process $B^0 \to μ^-\,μ^+\,ν_μ\,\barν_μ$. We show that the two cases differ dramatically in a special kinematic scenario where, in the rest frame of the parent $B$ meson, the muons fly away back-to-back (i.e. fly with 3-momenta of equal magnitudes but opposite directions), and so do the neutrino and antineutrino. Unlike any other scenario, we know the energies and magnitudes of $3$-momenta of both the neutrino and the antineutrino in this back-to-back configuration without even directly measuring them. This provides a way of avoiding the constraint imposed by the `practical Dirac-Majorana confusion theorem', as one need not fully integrate over neutrino and antineutrino in this case. As a true signature of the universal principle of quantum statistics which does not depend on the size of the mass of the particle but its spin, the difference between Dirac and Majorana cases in this special kinematic configuration does survive independent of the neutrino mass as long as neutrino mass is nonzero. The analysis presented here is applicable immediately to several other processes with the same final state as in the case of $B^0$ decay without any major change.

CP violation in the rare Higgs decays via exchange of on-shell almost degenerate Majorana neutrinos, $H \to ν_k N_j \to ν_k \ell^{-} U {\bar D}$ and $H \to ν_k N_j \to ν_k \ell^{+} {\bar U} D$

We investigate rare decays of Higgs via exchange of two almost degenerate heavy on-shell Majorana neutrinos $N_j$ ($j=1,2$): $Γ_{\pm} = Γ(h \to ν_k N_j \to ν_k \ell^{\pm} π^{\mp})$, and into the open quark channels $Γ_{\pm} = Γ(h \to ν_k N_j \to ν_k \ell^{\pm} U D)$, where $U D$ are two jets of open quarks (${\bar U} D$, or $U {\bar D}$, where $U=u, c$ and $D=d, s$). The related CP violation asymmetry $A_{\rm CP} = (Γ_{-} - Γ_{+})/(Γ_{-} + Γ_{+})$ is studied in detail. We take into account the $N_1$-$N_2$ overlap and oscillation effects. We can see that for certain, presently acceptable, range of input parameters, such decays with open quark channels, and their asymmetries, could be detected in the International Linear Collider (ILC).

Probing sterile neutrino in $B$ ($D$) meson decays at Belle II (BESIII)

We present, how a systematic study of $B \to D\ell N$ ($D \to K \ell N$) decays with $\ell=μ,τ$, at Belle II (BESIII) can provide unambiguous signature of a heavy neutrino $N$ and/or constrain its mixing with active neutrinos $ν_\ell$, which is parameterized by $|U_{\ell N}|^2$. Our constraint on $|U_{μN}|^2$ that can be achieved from the full Belle II data is comparable with what can be obtained from the much larger data set of the upgraded LHCb. Additionally, our method offers better constraint on $|U_{μN}|^2$ for mass of sterile neutrino $m_N < 2$ GeV. We can also probe the Dirac and Majorana nature of $N$ by observing the sequential decay of $N$, including suppression from observation of a displaced vertex as well as helicity flip, for Majorana $N$.

Sensitivity bounds on heavy neutrino mixing $|U_{μN}|^2$ and $|U_{τN}|^2$ from LHCb upgrade

Decays of heavy pseudoscalar mesons $B$, $B_c$, $B_s$ and $D_s$ at LHCb upgrade are considered, which produce either two equal sign muons or taus. In addition, we consider the analogous decays with opposite sign muons or taus. All these decays are considered to be mediated by a heavy on-shell neutrino $N$. Such decays of $B$ mesons, if not detected, will give in general stringent upper bounds on the heavy-light mixing parameter $|U_{μN}|^2$ as a function of the neutrino mass $M_N \sim 1$ GeV, principally due to the large expected number of produced mesons $B$. While some of the decays of the other mentioned mesons are attractive due to a weaker CKM-suppression, the expected produced number of such mesons is significantly smaller that that of $B$'s; therefore, the sensitivity bounds from such decays are in general comparable or less restrictive. When $τ$ pairs are produced, only two types of such decays are significant: $B^{\pm}, B_{c}^{\pm} \to τ^{\pm} τ^{\pm} π^{\mp}$ (and $τ^{\pm} τ^{\mp} π^{\pm}$), giving us stringent upper bounds on $|U_{τN}|^2$; the other decays with a pair of $τ$, such as $B^0 \to D^{(*)-} τ^+ τ^+ π^-$ (and $D^{(*)-} τ^+ τ^- π^+$), are prohibited or very suppressed by kinematics.

Sensitivity limits on heavy-light mixing $|U_{μN}|^2$ from lepton number violating $B$ meson decays

We consider the lepton number violating decays $B \to μ^{\pm} μ^{\pm} π^{\mp}$ and $B \to D^{(*)} μ^{\pm} μ^{\pm} π^{\mp}$ which may be detected at LHCb and Belle-II experiments; and $B \to μ^{\pm} μ^{\pm} e^{\mp} ν$ and $B \to D^{(*)} μ^{\pm} μ^{\pm} e^{\mp} ν$ decays which may be detected at Belle-II experiment. The projected total number of produced $B$ mesons is $4.8 \times 10^{12}$ at LHCb upgrade and $5 \times 10^{10}$ at Belle-II. For the case that the above decays are not detected, we deduce the new upper bounds (sensitivity limits) for the mixing parameter $|U_{μN}|^2$ of heavy sterile neutrino with sub-eV light neutrino, as a function of the sterile neutrino mass in the interval $1.75 \ {\rm GeV} < M_N < 5.0 \ {\rm GeV}$. We take into account the probability of decay of the sterile neutrino $N$ within the detector, taking as the effective detector length $L=2.3 \ m$ at LCHb upgrade and $L=1 \ m$ at Belle-II. In the interval $1.75 \ {\rm GeV} < M_N < 3 \ {\rm GeV}$, the most stringent bounds can be obtained with the decays $B \to μ^{\pm} μ^{\pm} π^{\mp}$ at LHCb upgrade. The sensitivity limits are expected to be in general more stringent at LHCb upgrade than at Belle-II, principally because the number of produced $B$ mesons in LHCb upgrade is expected to be by about two orders of magnitude larger than at Belle-II. We conclude that the LHCb upgrade and Belle-II experiments have the potential to either find a new heavy Majorana neutrino $N$, or to improve significantly the sensitivity limits (upper bounds) on the heavy-light mixing parameter $|U_{μN}|^2$, particularly in the mass range $1.75 \ {\rm GeV} < M_N < 3 \ {\rm GeV}$. This work is a continuation and refinement of our previous work [1] on the subject.

A Model for Pseudo-Dirac Neutrinos: Leptogenesis and Ultra-High Energy Neutrinos

We propose a model where sterile neutrinos are introduced to make light neutrinos to be pseudo-Dirac particles. It is shown how tiny mass splitting necessary for realizing pseudo-Dirac neutrinos can be achieved. Within the model, we show how leptogenesis can be successfully generated. Motivated by the recent observation of very high energy neutrino events at IceCube, we study a possibility to observe the effects of the pseudo-Dirac property of neutrinos by performing astronomical-scale baseline experiments to uncover the oscillation effects of very tiny mass splitting. Using the result of global fit to neutrino data for the input of neutrino mixing angles and CP phase at $1σ$ C.L. and fixing neutrino energy and mass splittings, we study how the oscillation effects induced by pseudo-Dirac neutrinos may affect the track-to-shower ratio obtained from IceCube data. We also discuss future prospect to observe the effects of the pseudo-Dirac property of neutrinos at high energy neutrino experiments.

Constraints on $Z^\prime$ Boson within Minimal Flavor Violation

We explore a $Z^\prime$ boson coupled only with the Standard Model (SM) fermions ($Z^\prime f\bar{f}$) in the framework of Minimal Flavor Violation. We study its effects on the processes with lepton flavor violation $\ell_j\to \ell_i\ell_k\bar{\ell}_l$, $\ell_j\to\ell_iγ$, $μ^{-}N\to e^- N$, quark flavor changing neutral currents $b\to s \ell^+\ell^-$, neutral $B$ and $K$ meson mixing, and $e^+e^-\to f\bar{f}$ at the LEP experiment to constrain the parameter space of $Z^\prime$ mass and couplings. We find that among those relevant processes, $μ\to eγ$, $μ\to 3e$, $μ$-$e$ conversion and $e^+e^-\to f\bar{f}$ can put more stringent bounds on $Z^\prime f\bar{f}$ couplings normalized by $Z^\prime$ mass. Its implications on various processes are obtained, such as $B$ and $K$ mixing and $B/K\to M \ell_1 \bar\ell_2$ decays. In addition, we also make analysis on $Z^\prime$ signatures at the LHC with $\sqrt{s}=8$ and 13 TeV.

Constraints on the $U(1)_L$ gauge boson in a wide mass range

There is a growing interest for the search of new light gauge bosons. The small mass of a new boson can turn various kinds of low-energy experiments to a new discovery machine, depending on their couplings to the standard model particles. It is important to understand the properties of each type of gauge boson and their current constraints for a given mass. While the dark photon (which couples to the electric charges) and the $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge boson have been well studied in an extensive mass range, the $U(1)_L$ gauge boson has not been fully investigated yet. We consider the gauge boson of the $U(1)_L$ in a wide mass range $m_{Z'} \approx 0 - 10^{12} ~\ev$ and investigate the constraints on its coupling from various experiments, discussing the similarities and differences from the dark photon and the $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge boson.

Distinguishing Dirac/Majorana Sterile Neutrinos at the LHC

We study the purely leptonic decays of $W^\pm \to e^\pm e^\pm μ^\mp ν$ and $μ^\pm μ^\pm e^\mp ν$ produced at the LHC, induced by sterile neutrinos with mass $m_N$ below $M_W$ in the intermediate state. Since the final state neutrino escapes detection, one cannot tell whether this process violates lepton number, what would indicate a Majorana character for the intermediate sterile neutrino. Our study shows that when the sterile neutrino mixings with electrons and muons are different enough, one can still discriminate between the Dirac and Majorana character of this intermediate neutrino by simply counting and comparing the above decay rates. After performing collider simulations and statistical analysis, we find that at the $14~\text{TeV}$ LHC with an integrated luminosity of $3000~\text{fb}^{-1}$, for two benchmark scenarios $m_N$ = 20 GeV and 50 GeV, at least a $3σ$ level of exclusion on the Dirac case can be achieved for disparities as mild as e.g. $|U_{Ne}|^2 < 0.7~ |U_{Nμ}|^2$ or $|U_{Nμ}|^2 < 0.7~ |U_{N e}|^2$, provided that $|U_{Ne}|^2$, $|U_{Nμ}|^2$ are both above $\sim 2\times 10^{-6}$.

Exploring top quark FCNC within 2HDM type III in association with flavor physics

The top quark flavor changing neutral current (FCNC) process is an excellent probe to search for new physics in top sector since the Standard Model expectation is extremely suppressed. We explore Higgs-mediated top quark FCNC, focusing on $H$-$t$-$c$ Yukawa coupling $λ_{ct}$ within the general two Higgs doublet model. After electroweak symmetry breaking the top quark FCNC couplings are included in the charged Higgs Yukawa sector so that they contribute to various processes in flavor physics. To probe $λ_{ct}$, we study anomalous single top production and the same sign top pair production at the LHC in association with flavor physics from the tree-level processes $B\to D^{(*)}τν$, $B\to τν$ as well as from the loop-level processes $B_d \to X_s γ$, $B_{d,s}-{\overline B}_{d,s}$ mixing. We perform combined analysis of all the constraints regarding the fine-tuning argument to fit the data and discuss future prospect. The recently updated measurements on $B\to D^{(*)}τν$ still prefer large $λ_{ct}$, but we show that the current bound on the same sign top pair production at the LHC gives the most significant upper bound on $λ_{ct}$ to be less than $10\sim30$ depending on neutral heavy Higgs masses. We also find that for the given upper bound on $λ_{ct}$, $B\to D^{(*)}τν$ put significant lower bound on $H$-$τ$-$τ$ Yukawa coupling, and the bound is proportional to the charged Higgs mass.

Light Dark Matter and Dark Radiation

Light dark-matter ($M\leq20$ MeV) particles freeze out after neutrino decoupling. If the dark-matter particle couples to a neutrino or an electromagnetic plasma, the late time entropy production from dark-matter annihilation can change the neutrino-to-photon temperature ratio, and equally the effective number of neutrinos $N_{eff}$. We study the non-equilibrium effects of dark-matter annihilation on the $N_{eff}$ and the effects by using a thermal equilibrium approximation. Both results are constrained with Planck observations. We demonstrate that the lower bounds of the dark-matter mass and the possibilities of the existence of additional radiation particles are more strongly constrained for dark-matter annihilation process in non-equilibrium.

Prompt atmospheric neutrino flux

We evaluate the prompt atmospheric neutrino flux including nuclear correction and $B$ hadron contribution in the different frameworks: NLO perturbative QCD and dipole models. The nuclear effect is larger in the prompt neutrino flux than in the total charm production cross section, and it reduces the fluxes by $10\% - 30\%$ depending on the model. We also investigate the uncertainty using the QCD scales allowed by the charm cross section data from RHIC and LHC experiments.

Prompt atmospheric neutrino fluxes: perturbative QCD models and nuclear effects

We evaluate the prompt atmospheric neutrino flux at high energies using three different frameworks for calculating the heavy quark production cross section in QCD: NLO perturbative QCD, $k_T$ factorization including low-$x$ resummation, and the dipole model including parton saturation. We use QCD parameters, the value for the charm quark mass and the range for the factorization and renormalization scales that provide the best description of the total charm cross section measured at fixed target experiments, at RHIC and at LHC. Using these parameters we calculate differential cross sections for charm and bottom production and compare with the latest data on forward charm meson production from LHCb at $7$ TeV and at $13$ TeV, finding good agreement with the data. In addition, we investigate the role of nuclear shadowing by including nuclear parton distribution functions (PDF) for the target air nucleus using two different nuclear PDF schemes. Depending on the scheme used, we find the reduction of the flux due to nuclear effects varies from $10\%$ to $50 \%$ at the highest energies. Finally, we compare our results with the IceCube limit on the prompt neutrino flux, which is already providing valuable information about some of the QCD models.

Axial-Vector Emitting Weak Nonleptonic Deacys of $Ω_c^0$ Baryon

The axial-vector emitting weak hadronic decays of $Ω_c^0$ baryon are investigated. After employing the factorization and the pole model framework to predict their branching ratios, we derive the symmetry breaking effects on axial-vector-meson-baryon couplings and effects of flavor dependence on baryon-baryon weak transition amplitudes and, consequently, on their branching ratios. We found that the W-exchange process contributions dominate $p$-wave meson emitting decays of $Ω_c^0$ baryon.

Inflation and leptogenesis in the 3-3-1-1 model

We consider the SU(3)_C \otimes SU(3)_L \otimes U(1)_X \otimes U(1)_N (3-3-1-1) model at the GUT scale with implication for inflation and leptogenesis. The mass spectra of the neutral Higgs bosons and neutral gauge bosons are reconsidered when the scale of the 3-3-1-1 breaking is much larger than that of the ordinary SU(3)_C \otimes SU(3)_L \otimes U(1)_X (3-3-1) breaking. We investigate how the 3-3-1-1 model generates an inflation by identifying the scalar field that spontaneously breaks the U(1)_N symmetry to inflaton as well as including radiative corrections for the inflaton potential. We figure out the parameter spaces appeared in the inflaton potential that satisfy the conditions for an inflation model and obtain the inflaton mass an order of 10^{13} GeV. The inflaton can dominantly decay into a pair of light Higgs bosons or a pair of heavy Majorana neutrinos which lead, respectively, to a reheating temperature of 10^9 GeV order appropriate to a thermal leptogenesis scenario or to a reduced reheating temperature corresponding to a non-thermal leptogenesis scenario. We calculate the lepton asymmetry which yields baryon asymmetry successfully for both the thermal and non-thermal cases.

Investigation of Dark Matter in Minimal 3-3-1 Models

It is shown that the 3-3-1 model with the minimal lepton content can work as two-Higgs-triplet 3-3-1 model while leaving the other scalars as inert particles responsible for dark matter. We study two cases of dark matter corresponding to the doublet and singlet scalar candidates. We figure out the parameter spaces in the WMAP allowed region of the relic density. The indirect and direct searches for dark matter in both cases are investigated by using micrOMEGAs.

Model-Independent Analysis of CP Violation in Charmed Meson Decays

We present a model-independent analysis of CP violation, inspired by recent experimental observations, in charmed meson decays. The topological diagram approach is used to study direct CP asymmetries for singly Cabibbo-suppressed two-body hadronic decays of charmed mesons. We extract the magnitudes and relative phases of the corresponding topological amplitudes from available experimental information. In order to get more precise and reliable estimates of direct CP asymmetries, we take into account contributions from all possible strong penguin amplitudes, including the internal $b$-quark penguin contributions. We also study flavor SU(3) symmetry breaking effects in these decay modes and consequently, predict direct CP asymmetries of unmeasured modes.

Oscillation of heavy sterile neutrino in decay of $B \to μe π$

In a scenario with two almost mass degenerate heavy sterile Majorana neutrinos with a mass $\sim 1$ GeV, we present the semileptonic decay widths of heavy charged pseudoscalars such as $B$ mesons, either lepton-number-violating ($B^{\pm} \to μ^{\pm} e^{\pm} π^{\mp}$), or lepton-number-conserving ($B^{\pm} \to μ^{\pm} e^{\mp} π^{\pm}$), mediated by such on-shell neutrinos. It had been explained in the literature that such decays may be eventually detected, and that they can present even detectable CP violation effects. In this work we point out that, in addition, such decays may present detectable effects of heavy neutrino oscillation, allowing us to extract the oscillation length and thus the heavy neutrino mass difference $ΔM_N$, as well as a CP-violating Majorana phase.

Probing the Majorana neutrinos and their CP violation in decays of charged scalar mesons $π, K, D, D_s, B, B_c$

Some of the outstanding questions of particle physics today concern the neutrino sector, in particular whether there are more neutrinos than those already known and whether they are Dirac or Majorana particles. There are different ways to explore these issues. In this article we describe neutrino-mediated decays of charged pseudoscalar mesons such as $π^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$ and $B^{\pm}$, in scenarios where extra neutrinos are heavy and can be on their mass shell. We discuss semileptonic and leptonic decays of such kinds. We investigate possible ways of using these decays in order to distinguish between the Dirac and Majorana character of neutrinos. Further, we argue that there are significant possibilities of detecting CP violation in such decays when there are at least two almost degenerate Majorana neutrinos involved. This latter type of scenario fits well into the known neutrino minimal standard model ($ν$MSM) which could simultaneously explain the Dark Matter and Baryon Asymmetry of the Universe.

Renormalization Group Evolution of Neutrino Parameters in Presence of Seesaw Threshold Effects and Majorana Phases

We examine the renormalization group evolution (RGE) for different mixing scenarios in the presence of seesaw threshold effects from high energy scale (GUT) to the low electroweak (EW) scale in the Standard Model (SM) and Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). We consider four mixing scenarios namely Tri-Bimaximal Mixing, Bimaximal Mixing, Hexagonal Mixing and Golden Ratio Mixing which come from different flavor symmetries at the GUT scale. We find that the Majorana phases play an important role in the RGE running of these mixing patterns along with the seesaw threshold corrections. We present a comparative study of the RGE of all these mixing scenarios both with and without Majorana CP phases when seesaw threshold corrections are taken into consideration. We find that in the absence of these Majorana phases both the RGE running and seesaw effects may lead to $θ_{13}<$ 5$^\circ$ at low energies both in the SM and MSSM. However, if the Majorana phases are incorporated to the mixing matrix the running can be enhanced both in the SM and MSSM. Even by incorporating non zero Majorana CP phases in the SM, we do not get $θ_{13}$ in its present 3$σ$ range. The current values of the two mass squared differences and mixing angles including $θ_{13}$ can be produced in the MSSM case with tan$β$ = 10 and non zero Majorana CP phases at low energy. We also calculate the order of effective Majorana mass and Jarlskog Invariant for each scenario under consideration.

Color dipole cross section and inelastic structure function

Instead of starting from a theoretically motivated form of the color dipole cross section in the dipole picture of deep inelastic scattering, we start with a parametrization of the deep inelastic structure function for electromagnetic scattering with protons, and then extract the color dipole cross section. Using the parametrizations of $F_2(ξ=x \ {\rm or}\ W^2,Q^2)$ by Donnachie-Landshoff and Block et al., we find the dipole cross section from an approximate form of the presumed dipole cross section convoluted with the perturbative photon wave function for virtual photon splitting into a color dipole with massless quarks. The color dipole cross section determined this way reproduces the original structure function within about 10\% for $0.1$ GeV$^2\leq Q^2\leq 10$ GeV$^2$. We discuss the large and small form of the dipole cross section and compare with other parameterizations.

CP violation in lepton number violating semihadronic decays of $K, D, D_s, B, B_c$

We study the CP violation in lepton number violating meson decays $M^{\pm} \to \ell_1^{\pm} \ell_2^{\pm} M^{' \mp}$, where $M$ and $M^{'}$ are pseudoscalar mesons, $M=K, D, D_s, B, B_c$ and $M^{'}=π, K, D, D_s$, and the charged leptons are $\ell_1, \ell_2 = e, μ$. It turns out that the CP-violating difference $S_{-}(M) \equiv [Γ(M^- \to \ell_1^- \ell_2^- M^{' +})-Γ(M^+ \to \ell_1^+ \ell_2^+ M^{' -})]$ can become appreciable when two intermediate on-shell Majorana neutrinos $N_j$ ($j=1,2$) participate in these decays. Our calculations show that the asymmetry becomes largest when the masses of $N_1$ and $N_2$ are almost degenerate, i.e., when the mass difference $ΔM_N$ becomes comparable with the (small) decay widths $Γ_N$ of these neutrinos: $ΔM_N \not\gg Γ_N$. We show that in such a case, the CP ratio ${\cal A}_{CP}(M) \equiv [Γ(M^- \to \ell_1^- \ell_2^- M^{' +})-Γ(M^+ \to \ell_1^+ \ell_2^+ M^{' -})]/[Γ(M^- \to \ell_1^- \ell_2^- M^{' +})+Γ(M^+ \to \ell_1^+ \ell_2^+ M^{' -})]$ becomes a quantity $\sim 1$. The observation of CP violation in these decays would be consistent with the existence of the well-motivated $ν$MSM model with two almost degenerate heavy neutrinos in the mass range between $M_N \sim 0.1$-$10^1$ GeV.

CP Violation with Majorana neutrinos in K Meson Decays

We study the possibility of having CP asymmetries in the decay Kaon(+/-) -> pion(-/+) lepton(+/-) lepton(+/-) (lepton = muon or electron). This decay violates Lepton Number by two units and occurs only if there are Majorana particles that mediate the transition. Even though the absolute rate is highly suppressed by current bounds, we search for Majorana neutrino scenarios where the CP asymmetry arising from the lepton sector could be sizeable. This is indeed the case if there are two or more Majorana neutrinos with similar masses in the range around 10^2 MeV. In particular, the asymmetry is potentially near unity if two neutrinos are nearly degenerate, in the sense that the mass difference is similar to the decay rate. The full decay, however, may be difficult to detect not only because of the suppression caused by the heavy-to-light lepton mixing, but also because of the long lifetime of the heavy neutrino, which would induce large space separation between the two vertices where the charge leptons are produced. This particular problem should be less serious in heavier meson decays, as they involve heavier neutrinos with shorter lifetimes.

CP violations in $π^{\pm}$ Meson Decay

We study the pion decays with intermediate on-shell neutrinos $N$ into two electrons and a muon, $π^{\pm} \to e^{\pm} N \to e^{\pm} e^{\pm} μ^{\mp} ν$. We investigate the branching ratios ${\rm Br}_{\pm} = [Γ(π^- \to e^- e^- μ^+ ν) \pm Γ(π^+ \to e^+e^+μ^-ν)]/Γ(π^- \to {\rm all})$ and the CP asymmetry ratio ${\cal A}_{\rm CP} = {\rm Br}_{-}/{\rm Br}_{+}$ for such decays, in the scenario with two different on-shell neutrinos. If $N$ is Dirac, only the lepton number conserving (LC) decays contribute (LC: $ν= ν_e$ or ${\bar ν}_e$); if $N$ is Majorana, both LC and lepton number violating (LV) decays contribute (LV: $ν={\bar ν}_μ$ or $ν=ν_μ$). The results show that the CP asymmetry ${\cal A}_{\rm CP}$ is in general very small, but increases and becomes $\sim 1$ when the masses of the two intermediate neutrinos get closer to each other, i.e., when their mass difference becomes comparable with their decay width, $ΔM_N \not\gg Γ_N$. The observation of CP violation in pion decays would be consistent with the existence of the well-motivated $ν$MSM model with two almost degenerate heavy neutrinos.

Prediction of leptonic CP phase from perturbatively modified tribimaximal (or bimaximal) mixing

We consider the perturbatively modified tribimaximal (or bimaximal) mixing to estimate the (Dirac-type) CP phase in neutrino mixing matrix. The expressions for the CP phase are derived from the equivalence between the standard parametrization of the neutrino mixing matrix for the Majorana neutrino and modified tribimaximal or bimaximal mixing matrices with appropriate CP phases. Carrying out numerical analysis based on the current experimental results for neutrino mixing angles, we can predict the values of the CP phase for several possible cases.

Radiative and Seesaw Threshold Corrections to the $S_3$ Symmetric Neutrino Mass Matrix

We systematically analyze the radiative corrections to the $S_3$ symmetric neutrino mass matrix at high energy scale, say the GUT scale, in the charged lepton basis. There are significant corrections to the neutrino parameters both in the Standard Model (SM) and Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) with large tan$β$, when the renormalization group evolution (RGE) and seesaw threshold effects are taken into consideration. We find that in the SM all three mixing angles and atmospheric mass squared difference are simultaneously obtained in their current 3$σ$ ranges at the electroweak scale. However, the solar mass squared difference is found to be larger than its allowed 3$σ$ range at the low scale in this case. There are significant contributions to neutrino masses and mixing angles in the MSSM with large tan$β$ from the RGEs even in the absence of seesaw threshold corrections. However, we find that the mass squared differences and the mixing angles are obtained in their current 3$σ$ ranges at low energy when the seesaw threshold effects are also taken into account in the MSSM with large tan$β$.

Remarks on the lifetime of sterile neutrinos and the effect on detection of rare meson decays M+ -> M'- lepton+ lepton+

We review the detection of the Delta L=2 semileptonic meson decays of the form M(+) -> M'(-) lepton(+) lepton(-) that we studied in a previous work, mediated by a Majorana neutrino with a mass in the range between the masses of the initial and final mesons. For such range of masses, the Majorana neutrino will go on its mass shell and the two charged leptons will appear at displaced vertices or, if the lifetime is long enough, most secondary vertices will fall outside the detector. We study the consequences of this effect on the experimental searches and limits that can be extracted.

Top Yukawa coupling measurement with indefinite CP Higgs in $e^+e^-\to t\bar{t}Φ$

We consider the issue of the top quark Yukawa coupling measurement in a model in dependent and general case with the inclusion of CP-violation in the coupling. Arguably the best process to study this coupling is the associa ted production of Higgs boson along with a $t\bar t$ pair in a machine like the International Linear Collider (ILC). While detailed analyses of the sensitivity of the measurement assuming a Standard Model (SM) - like coupling are available in the context of ILC, conclude that th e coupling could be pinned down at about 10\% level with modest luminosity, our investigations show that the scenario could be different in case of a more general coupling. The modified Lorentz structure resulting in a changed functional dependence of the cross section on the couplin g, along with the difference in the cross section itself leads to considerable deviation in the sensitivity. Our studies with an ILC of center of mass energies of 500 GeV, 800 GeV and 1000 GeV show that moderate CP-mixing in the Higgs sector could change the sensitivity to about 20\ %, while it could be worsened to 75\% in cases which could accommodate more dramatic changes in the coupling. While detailed considerations of the decay distributions point to a need for a relook at the analysis strategy followed for the case of SM such as for a model independent analysis of the top quark Yukawa coupling measurement. This study strongly suggests that, a joint analysis of the CP properties and the Yukawa coupling measurement would be the way forward at the ILC and that caution must be excercised in the measurem ent of the Yukawa couplings and the conclusions drawn from it.

Triplet Dark Matter from leptogenesis

A triplet dark matter candidate from thermal leptogenesis is considered with building a model. The model is based on the standard two Higgs doublet model and seesaw mechanism with Higgs triplets. The parameters (couplings and masses) are adjusted for the observed small neutrino mass and the leptogenesis. Dark matter particles can annihilate and decay in this model. The time evolution of the dark matter number is governed by (co)annihilations in the expanding universe, and its mass is constrained by the observed relic density. The dark matter can decay into final states with three leptons (two charged leptons and one neutrino). We investigate whether the decay in the galaxy can account for cosmic ray anomalies in the positron and electron spectrum. A noticeable point is that if the dark matter decays into each lepton with different branching ratios, cosmic ray anomalies in AMS-02 measurements of the positron fraction and the Fermi LAT measurements of the electrons-plus-positrons flux could be simultaneously accounted for from its decay products. The leptogenesis within this model is studied in an appendix.

$B\to DK^*_{0,2}$ Decays: PQCD analysis to determine CP violation phase angle $γ$

$B^\pm \to (D^0, \bar D^0, D_{CP})K^{*\pm}_{0,2}$ decays are helpful in determining the CP violation angle $γ$, and we analyze these decay processes within the perturbative QCD approach based on $k_T$ factorization. We found that the branching ratio of $B^-\to D^0 K^{*-}_0$ can reach the order of $10^{-4}$, due to the enhancement of nonfactorizable contributions in color-suppressed $D^0$-emission, while the branching ratio of $B^-\to \bar D^0 K^{*-}_0$ is of the order $10^{-5}$. The ratio of decay amplitudes is about 3 times larger than the one in the channel $B^\pm\to D K^\pm$. Large branching ratios provide a good opportunity to observe $ B^\pm \to D K^{*\pm}_2$ on the ongoing and forthcoming experimental facilities and consequently these channels may be of valuable avail in reducing the errors in the CP violation phase angle $γ$. We also explore the possible time-dependent CP asymmetries of $B_s$ decay into a scalar meson to determine the phase angle $γ$.

Charge Asymmetry of Weak Boson Production at the LHC and the Charm Content of the Proton

We investigate the production of the weak bosons $W^+$, $W^-$ and $Z$ at the LHC as a function of their rapidity, reconstructed {\it experimentally} from their leptonic decay. We show that the measurements provide a powerful tool for constraining the parton distribution functions, as was already the case for the lower energy $p\bar{p}$ collider data. We study the charge asymmetry determining the $u$ and $d$ distribution functions using the reconstructed $W^+$, $W^-$ rapidities. We also show how the ratio of the $W$ and $Z$ boson rapidity distributions directly probes the charm quark distribution function of the proton.

Charmless $B_{u,d,s}\to VT$ decays in perturbative QCD approach

Motivated by the experimental data, we study charmless $B_{u,d,s}\to VT$ ($V$ and $T$ denote light vector and tensor mesons respectively) decays in the perturbative QCD approach. The predictions of branching ratios, polarization fractions and direct CP violations are given in detail. Specifically, within this approach we have calculated the polarization fractions and the branching ratios of $B\to ϕ(K_2^{*-}, \bar K_2^{*0})$ which agree well with the observed experimental data, however the branching ratios of $B\to ω(K_2^{*-}, \bar K_2^{*0})$ are hard to be explained, where the polarization fractions are well accommodated. The tree dominated channels with a vector meson emitted have longitudinal polarization fraction of 90%, while the penguin dominating ones have subtle polarization fractions. Fortunately, most branching ratios of $B_{u,d}$ decays are of the order $10^{-6}$, which would be straight forward for experimental observations. For the $B_s$ decays the branching ratios can reach the order of $10^{-6}$ in tree dominated decays, while in penguin dominated decays those are of order of $10^{-7}$ which require more experimental data to be observed.

Dipole-interacting Fermionic Dark Matter in positron, antiproton, and gamma-ray channels

Cosmic ray signals from dipole-interacting dark matter annihilation are considered in the positron, antiproton and photon channels. The predicted signals in the positron channel could nicely account for the excess of positron fraction from Fermi LAT, PAMELA, HEAT and AMS-01 experiments for the dark matter mass larger than 100 GeV with a boost (enhancement) factor of 30-80. No excess of antiproton over proton ratio at the experiments also gives a severe restriction for this scenario. With the boost factors, the predicted signals from Galactic halo and signals as mono-energetic gamma-ray lines (monochromatic photons) for the region close to the Galactic center are investigated. The gamma-ray excess of recent tentative analyses based on Fermi LAT data and the potential probe of the monochromatic lines at a planned experiment, AMS-02, are also considered.

Implication of a vanishing element in 3+1 Scenario

In this paper we study the phenomenological implications of the one zero textures of low energy neutrino mass matrices in presence of a sterile neutrino. We consider the 3+1 scheme and use the results from global fit for short baseline neutrino oscillation data which provides the bounds on the three additional mixing angles. We find that the mass matrix elements $m_{αβ}$ ($α, β= e, μ, τ$) involving only the active states can assume vanishing values in the allowed parameter space for all the mass spectrum. Among the mass matrix elements connecting the active and sterile states, $m_{es}$ and $m_{μs}$ can become small only for the quasi-degenerate neutrinos. The element $m_{τs}$ on the other hand can vanish even for lower values of masses since the 3-4 mixing angle only has an upper bound from current data. The mass matrix element ($m_{ss}$) involving only the sterile state stays $\sim$ $\mathcal{O}$(1) eV in the whole parameter region. We study the possible correlations between the sterile mixing angles and the Majorana phases to give a zero element in the mass matrix.

Spontaneous CP Violation in $A_4$ Flavor Symmetry and Leptogenesis

We propose a simple renormalizable model for the spontaneous CP violation based on $SU(2)_{L}\times U(1)_{Y}\times A_{4}$ symmetry in a radiative seesaw mechanism, which can be guaranteed by an extra $Z_{2}$ symmetry. In our model CP is spontaneously broken at high energies, after breaking of flavor symmetry, by a complex vacuum expectation value of $A_{4}$-triplet and gauge singlet scalar field. We show that the spontaneously generated CP phase could become a natural source of leptogenesis, %CP violation for neutrino oscillation and leptogenesis, respectively. Then, and also investigate CP violation at low energies in the lepton sector and show how the CP phases in PMNS could be arisen through spontaneous symmetry breaking mechanism. As a numerical study, interestingly, we show that the normal mass hierarchy favors relatively large values of $θ_{13}$, large deviations from maximality of $θ_{23}<π/4$ and Dirac-CP phase $0^{\circ}\leqδ_{CP}\leq50^{\circ}$ and $300^{\circ}\leqδ_{CP}\leq360^{\circ}$. For the inverted hierarchy case, the experimentally measured values of $θ_{13}$ favors $θ_{23}>π/4$ and discrete values of $δ_{CP}$ around $100^{\circ},135^{\circ},255^{\circ}$ and $300^{\circ}$. Finally, with a successful leptogenesis our numerical results give more predictive values on the Dirac CP phase: for the normal mass hierarchy $1^{\circ}\lesssimδ_{CP}\lesssim10^{\circ}$ and for inverted one $δ_{CP}\sim100^{\circ},135^{\circ},300^{\circ}$.

Vector like leptons with extended Higgs sector

We examined the influence of additional scalar doublet on the parameter space of the Standard Model supplemented with a generation of new vector like leptons. In particular we identified the viable regions of parameter space by inspecting various constraints especially electroweak precision (S, T and U) parameters. We demonstrated that the additional scalar assists in alleviating the tension of electroweak precision constraints and thus permitting larger Yukawa mixing and mass splittings among vector like species. We also compared and contrasted the regions of parameter space pertaining to the latest LHC Higgs to diphoton channel results in this scenario with vector like leptons in single Higgs doublet and pure two Higgs doublet model case.

Estimating Form Factors of $B_s\rightarrow D_s^{(*)}$ and their Applications to Semi-leptonic and Non-leptonic Decays

$B_s^0\rightarrow D_s^{-}$ and $B_s^0\rightarrow D_s^{*-}$ weak transition form factors are estimated for the whole physical region with a method based on an instantaneous approximated Mandelstam formulation of transition matrix elements and the instantaneous Bethe-Salpeter equation. We apply the estimated form factors to branching ratios, CP asymmetries and polarization fractions of non-leptonic decays within the factorization approximation. And we study the non-factorizable effects and annihilation contributions with the perturbative QCD approach. The branching ratios of semi-leptonic $B_s^0\rightarrow D_s^{(*)-}l^+ν_l$ decays are also evaluated. We show that the calculated decay rates agree well with the available experimental data. The longitudinal polarization fraction of $B_s\rightarrow D_s^*V(A)$ decays are $\sim0.8$ when $V(A)$ denotes a light meson, and are $\sim0.5$ when $V(A)$ denotes a $D_q$ ($q=d,s$) meson.

Majorana Dark Matter Cross Sections with Nucleons at High Energies

Non-relativistic dark matter scattering with nucleons is constrained by direct detection experiments. We use the XENON constraints on the spin-independent and spin-dependent cross section for dark matter scattering with nucleons to constrain a hypothetical Majorana fermionic dark matter particle's couplings to the Higgs boson and Z boson. In the procedure we illustrate the change in the dark matter nucleon cross section as one goes from non-relativistic, coherent scattering to relativistic, incoherent scattering. While the Z invisible decay width excludes directly couplings of dark matter to ordinary matter, by introducing a light Z' portal to the dark sector, a relatively large dark matter nucleon cross section can be preserved even with accelerator experiment constraints for dark matter with a mass of ~10 GeV

Order alpha_s^2 magnetic penguin correction for B decay to light mesons

We compute the order alpha_s^2 correction to the matrix element of magnetic penguin operator for B meson decaying to light mesons within the QCD factorization framework. We explicitly show that the soft and collinear divergences are canceled out, so that the validity of QCD factorization is confirmed. We present the result of the calculation in complete analytic forms. The result is also applied to B -> K pi decays, and we find that the order alpha_s^2 correction of magnetic penguin operator can considerably reduce the coefficient of penguin amplitude a^c_{4,I}. The reduction is stronger for the imaginary part.

Probing Majorana neutrinos in rare pi+ to e+ e+ mu- nu decays

We study the rare decays of charged π mesons, π+ to e+ e+ μ- anti-ν_μ and π+ to e+ μ- e+ ν_e, induced by a sterile neutrino N with a mass in the range m_μ< m_N < m_π. The first process violates Lepton Number by two units and so occurs only if N is Majorana, while the second process conserves Lepton Number and occurs irrespective of the Majorana or Dirac character of N. We study a way to distinguish the Majorana vs. Dirac character of N in these processes using the muon spectrum. We also find that the branching ratios could be at the reach of high luminosity experiments like Project X at FNAL or any proposed neutrino (or muon) factories worldwide.

Recent Neutrino Data and Type III Seesaw with Discrete Symmetry

In light of the recent neutrino experiment results from Daya Bay and RENO Collaborations, we study phenomenology of neutrino mixing angles in the Type III seesaw model with an discrete $A_4 \times Z_2$ symmetry, whose spontaneously breaking scale is much higher than the electroweak scale. At tree level, the tri-bimaximal (TBM) form of the lepton mixing matrix can be obtained from leptonic Yukawa interactions in a natural way. We introduce all possible effective dimension-5 operators, invariant under the Standard Model gauge group and $A_4 \times Z_2$, and explicitly show that they induce a deviation of the lepton mixing from the TBM mixing matrix, which can explain a large mixing angle $θ_{13}$ together with small deviations of the solar and atmospheric mixing angles from the TBM. Two possible scenarios are investigated, by taking into account either negligible or sizable contributions from the light charged lepton sector to the lepton mixing matrix. Especially it is found in the latter scenario that all the neutrino experimental data, including the recent best-fit value of $θ_{13} = 8.68^{\circ}$, can be accommodated. The leptonic CP violation characterized by the Jarlskog invariant $J_{CP}$ has a non-vanishing value, indicating a signal of maximal CP violation.

Total Hadronic Cross Sections and π^\mp π^+ Scattering

Recent measurements of the inelastic and total proton-proton cross section at the LHC, and at cosmic ray energies by the Auger experiment, have quantitatively confirmed fits to lower energy data constrained by the assumption that the proton is asymptotically a black disk of gluons. We show that data on \bar p(p)p,π^\mp p, and K^\mp p forward scattering support the related expectation that the asymptotic behavior of all cross sections is flavor independent. By using the most recent measurements from ATLAS, CMS, TOTEM and Auger, we predict σ^{pp}_{\rm tot} (\sqrt s=8 {\rm TeV})=100.6 \pm 2.9 mb and σ^{pp}_{\rm tot} (\sqrt s=14 {\rm TeV})=110.8 \pm 3.5 mb, as well as refine the total cross section σ^{pp}_{\rm tot} (\sqrt s=57 {\rm TeV})=139.6 \pm 5.4 mb. Our analysis also predicts the total π^\mp π^+ cross sections as a function of \sqrt s.

$Δm_D$ and $ΔΓ_D$ revisted

The lifetime difference ($y_D=ΔΓ_D/2Γ_D$) and mass difference ($x_D=Δm_D/Γ_D$) of neutral $D$ meson have been measured with $y_D=(0.80\pm 0.13)%$ and $x_D=(0.59 \pm 0.20)%$, respectively. Intriguingly, in contrast with the cases of $K$ and $B_q$ systems, the current data indicate that $y_D/x_D \sim 1$ and $y_D$ favors to be larger than $x_D$. For explaining the experimental indication, we here study the $D-\bar D$ oscillation in the framework of unparticle physics. We demonstrate that {\it the peculiar phase appearing in off-shell unparticle propagator} could play an important role on $x_D$ and $y_D$.

Discrimination of the light CP-odd scalars between in the NMSSM and in the SLHM

The presence of the light CP-odd scalar boson predicted in the next-to-minimal supersymmetric model (NMSSM) and the simplest little Higgs model (SLHM) dramatically changes the phenomenology of the Higgs sector. We suggest a practical strategy to discriminate the underlying model of the CP-odd scalar boson produced in the decay of the standard model-like Higgs boson. We define the decay rate of "the non $b$-tagged jet pair" with which we compute the ratio of decay rates into lepton and jets. They show much different behaviors between the NMSSM and the SLHM.

Rates and CP asymmetries of the non-leptonic two-body decay of $B_c$ are calculated based on the low energy effective Hamiltonian. We concentrate on such $b$ quark decays of the processes with $0^-$ and $1^-$ S-wave particles and/or $0^+$ and $1^+$ P-wave particles in the final states. The Salpeter method, which is the relativistic instantaneous approximation of the original Bethe-Salpeter equation, is used to derive hadron transition matrix elements. Based on the calculation, it is found that the best decay channels to observe CP violation are $B_c^-\rightarrow η_c +D^-(D^{*-}_0)$, which need about $\sim10^7$ $B_c$ events in experiment. Study of $\bar B^0 \to D^0 μ^+μ^-$ Decay in Perturbative QCD Approach

Within the perturbative QCD approach and ignoring the contributions of long distance and subleading penguin loops, we investigate $\bar B^0 \to D^0 μ^+μ^-$ decay in the large recoiling kinematic region in the Standard Model. At the tree level, $\bar B^0$ decays to $D^0$ by exchanging a $W$ boson accompanied by a virtual photon emission from the valence quarks of $\bar B^0$ and $D^0$ meson, then the virtual photon decays to the lepton pair. Numerically, we find that the branching ratio decreases rapidly as the $q^2$ increases, and the branching ratio of $ \bar B^0\to D^0μ^+μ^-$ is $(9.7_{-3.2}^{+4.2})\times 10^{-6}$ in the region $q^2 \in [1,5] \mathrm{GeV}^2$. The order of the branching ratio shows a possibility to study this interesting channel in the current $B$ factories and the Large Hadron Collider. The precise experimental data will help us to test the factorization approach and the QCD theory, in general.

The B ---> π K puzzle and the Bulk Randall-Sundurm model

The recent measurements of the direct CP asymmetries ($A_{CP}$) in the penguin-dominated $B\to K π$ decays show some discrepancy from the standard model (SM) prediction. While $A_{CP}$ of $B^+ \to π^0 K^+$ and that of $B^0 \to π^- K^+$ in the naive estimate of the SM are expected to have very similar values, their experimental data are of the opposite sign and different magnitudes. We study the effects of the custodial bulk Randall-Sundrum model on this $A_{CP}$. In this model, the misalignment of the five-dimensional (5D) Yukawa interactions to the 5D bulk gauge interactions in flavor space leads to tree-level flavor-changing neutral current by the Kaluza-Klein gauge bosons. In a large portion of the parameter space of this model, the observed nonzero $A_{CP}(B^+ \to π^0 K^+) - A_{CP}(B^0 \to π^- K^+)$ can be explained only with low Kaluza-Klein mass scale $M_{KK}$ around 1 TeV. Rather extreme parameters is required to explain it with $M_{KK}\simeq 3\tev$. The new contributions to well-measured branching ratios of $B \to K π$ decays are also shown to be suppressed.

A direct link between neutrinoless double beta decay and leptogenesis in a seesaw model with $S_4$ symmetry

We study how leptogenesis can be implemented in a seesaw model with $S_4$ flavor symmetry, which leads to the neutrino tri-bimaximal mixing matrix and degenerate right-handed (RH) neutrino spectrum. Introducing a tiny soft $S_4$ symmetry breaking term in the RH neutrino mass matrix, we show that the flavored resonant leptogenesis can be successfully realized, which can lower the seesaw scale much so as to make it possible to probe in colliders. Even though such a tiny soft breaking term is essential for leptogenesis, it does not significantly affect the low energy observables. We also investigate how the effective light neutrino mass $|<m_{ee}> |$ associated with neutrinoless double beta decay can be predicted along with the neutrino mass hierarchies by imposing experimental data of low-energy observables. We find a direct link between leptogenesis and neutrinoless double beta decay characterized by $|<m_{ee}>|$ through a high energy CP phase $ϕ$, which is correlated with low energy Majorana CP phases. It is shown that our predictions of $|<m_{ee}>|$ for some fixed parameters of high energy physics can be constrained by the current observation of baryon asymmetry.

Charge and CP asymmetries of $B_q$ meson in unparticle physics

Recently the DØ Collaboration reported an observation of like-sign charge asymmetry (CA), which is about $3.2 σ$ deviation from the standard model (SM) prediction. Inspired by the observation we investigate the scalar unparticle effects, under the color charge of $SU(3)_c$ symmetry, in the CP violation in neutral B meson oscillations as well as the dispersive and absorptive parts of $\bar B_q\leftrightarrow B_q$ transition, which can be related to the CA directly. In order to illustrate the peculiar properties of unparticle, our analysis is carried out in two scenarios for the right-handed section: (I) $λ_R=λ_L$ and $U_D^R=U_D^L$, where $λ_{L,R}$ and $U_D^{L,R}$ are the couplings and flavor mixing matrix of left- and right-handed section, respectively; (II) $λ_R >> λ_L$ and $U_D^R$ is completely a free parameter. In scenario I we found that the wrong- and like-sign CA cannot be changed significantly for a SM-like CP violating source because of the strong constraint of $Δm_{B_d}$. Contrarily, in scenario II we can figure out the parameter space in which the CA can be enhanced to the value observed by DØ with the constraint of $Δm_{B_s}$ due to the enhancement of $Γ^s_{12}$. In the parameter space we obtained, the correlation between $ΔΓ^s$ and $ϕ_s$ is consistent with the current CDF and DØ results.

Comments on $\left|\frac{V_{ub}}{V_{cb}}\right|$ and $|V_{ub}|$ from Non-leptonic $B$ Decays within the Perturbative QCD Approach

We revisited the extracting $\left|V_{ub}/V_{cb}\right|$ and $|V_{ub}|$ through calculating the ratios ${\cal B}(B^0\to D_s^{(*)+}(π^-,ρ^-)/ {\cal B}(B^0\to D_s^{(*)+} D^{(*)-})$ in the perturbative QCD approach, which is regarded as an effective theory in dealing with non-leptonic charmed $B$ decays. Utilizing this approach, we could calculate the form factors effectively as well as non-factorizable and annihilation contributions. Within the updated distribution amplitudes and the latest experimental data, we get $\left|{V_{ub}}/{V_{cb}}\right|=0.083\pm0.007$, which favors a bit smaller $|V_{ub}|$ compared with the averaged PDG value, but agrees well the exclusively measured values. Furthermore, we predict the branching ratio of $\bar B^0 \to D_s^-ρ^+$ $\sim$ $(2.7\pm 1.2)\times 10^{-5}$, which could be measured in $B$ factories near future. In our calculation, the major uncertainty is due to our poor knowledge of heavy meson wave functions. We also comment that it is not trivial to generalize this approach to $B_s$ system, primarily because both $\bar B_s^0 $ and $B_s^0$ can decay into the same final states $D_s^+K^-$ and $D_s^+D_s^-$.

Invisible Higgs decay with B\to Kν\barν constraint

If the Higgs boson were the only particle within the LHC accessible range, precision measurement of the Higgs's properties would play a unique role in studying electroweak symmetry breaking as well as possible new physics. We try to use low energy experiments such as rare B decay to constrain a challenging decay mode of Higgs, in which a Higgs decays to a pair of light (\approx 1 \sim 2 GeV) SM singlet S and becomes invisible. By using the current experimental bound of rare decay B\to Kν\barν and computing the contribution of B\to K SS to (the) B\to K+\cancel{E}, we obtain an upper bound on the Higgs coupling to such light singlet. It is interesting that the partial width of the invisible decay mode h\to SS by taking the upper bound value of coupling is at a comparable level with h\to WW/ZZ or WW^(*) decay modes, making the Higgs identifiable but with a different predicted decay BR from the standard model Higgs decay. It will then have an impact on precision measurement of the Higgs's properties. We also study the implication for cosmology from such a light singlet and propose a solution to the potential problem.

Little Higgs model with new Z-parity and Dark matter

It has been known that Little Higgs models with T-parity, which can give a dark matter candidate, suffer from the anomalies of given models through the Wess-Zumino-Witten term, which in turn can violate the T-parity. Here we thus introduce a new kind of discrete symmetry called Z-parity, which is a residual gauge symmetry of an additional U(1) symmetry of the extended gauge group of the Little Higgs models. Because Z-parity comes from the gauge symmetry, this discrete symmetry not only remains unbroken under the anomalies but also can give the lightest Z-parity particle, which is stable and becomes a viable dark matter candidate. We also show that there is an allowed parameter space in the global symmetry breaking scale f versus the mass of the dark matter, which satisfies the current relic density of the cold dark matter.

These processes provide information complementary to neutrinoless double nuclear beta decays, and are sensitive to neutrino masses and lepton mixing. Doubly Coexisting Dark Matter Candidates in an Extended Seesaw Model

We examine how a scenario of coexisting two-particle dark mater can be realized in the extended seesaw model, which we have proposed previously to accommodate small neutrino masses and low scale leptogenesis with an introduction of singlet Majorana neutrino $S$ and singlet scalar $ϕ$. We now impose the discrete symmetry $Z_2 \times Z_2^{\prime}$ and introduce new renormalizable interaction terms with a new heavy singlet scalar particle $Φ$ so as for previously introduced $S$ and $ϕ$ to be doubly coexisting dark matter candidates. Depending on the mass spectrum of the two dark matter candidates, the annihilation process either $SS\longrightarrow ϕϕ$ or $ϕϕ\longrightarrow SS$ is of particular interest because the annihilation cross sections for the processes can be so large that the relic abundance of decaying particle should get lowered, which in turn makes the constraints on its parameter space relaxed, compared with the case of one and only one dark matter candidate. We discuss the implications of the dark matter detection through the scattering off the nucleus of the detecting material on our scenarios for dark matter candidates. We also study the implications for the search of invisible Higgs decay at LHC, which may serve as a probe of our scenario for dark matter.

$μ-τ$ Reflection Symmetry in in Lepton Mixing and Radiatively Generated Leptogenesis

We study a $μ- τ$ reflection symmetry in neutrino sector realized at the GUT scale in the context of the seesaw model. In our scenario, the exact $μ- τ$ reflection symmetry realized in the basis where the charged lepton and heavy Majorana mass matrices are diagonal, leads to vanishing lepton asymmetries. We find that, in the minimal supersymmetry extension of the seesaw model with appropriate values of $\tanβ$, the renormalization group (RG) evolution from the GUT scale to seesaw scale can induce a successful leptogenesis. It is shown that the right amount of the baryon asymmetries $η_B$ can be achieved via so-called resonant leptogenesis, which can be realized at rather low seesaw scale in our scenario, so that the well-known gravitino problem is safely avoided. In this work, we consider both flavor dependent and flavor independent leptogenesis, and demonstrate how they lead to different amounts of baryon asymmetries in detail.

Test of the Littlest Higgs model through the correlation among W boson, top quark and Higgs masses

Motivated by the recent precision measurements of the W boson mass and top quark mass, we test the Littlest Higgs model by confronting the prediction of M_W with the current and prospective measurements of M_W and M_t as well as through the correlation among M_W, M_t and Higgs mass. We argue that the current values and accuracy of M_W and M_t measurements tend to favor the Littlest Higgs model over the standard model, although the most recent electroweak data may appear to be consistent with the standard model prediction. In this analysis, the upper bound on the global SU(5) symmetry breaking scale turned out to be 26.3 TeV. We also discuss how the masses of the heavy gauge boson M_B in the Littlest Higgs model can be predicted from the constraints on the model parameters.

Constraint of B_{d,s}-bar{B}_{d,s} mixing on warped extra-dimension model

Recent CDF measurement of the Bs-Bs oscillation frequency, at the Tevatron imposes significant constraint on various models for new physics. A warped extra-dimension model with custodial isospin symmetry accommodates the Bd-Bd mixing at tree level mainly through the Kaluza-Klein gluons. This is due to the misalignment between the bulk gauge eigenstates and the localized Yukawa eigenstates of the bulk fermions. We adopt the universal 5D Yukawa coupling model where all Yukawa couplings are of order one. The SM fermion mass spectra and mixings are controlled by the bulk Dirac mass parameters. With two versions of the hadronic parameter values, we investigate the implication of the observed BB mixings on this model. The CP-violating effects on the Bd system is shown to provide very strong constraint: The first Kaluza-Klein mass of a gluon has its lower bound about 3.7 TeV with 1 sigma uncertainty.

The colored SU(2)-singlet heavy T-quark is one of the most crucial ingredients in little Higgs models, which is introduced to cancel the largest contribution of the SM top quark to the Higgs boson mass at one-loop level. In two representative little Higgs models, the littlest Higgs model and the SU(3) simplest Higgs model, we comprehensively study the single heavy T-quark production at Large Hadron Collider (LHC). After presenting the possibility of relatively light (~500 GeV) T-quark in the simplest little Higgs model, we consider all the relevant processes, the 2->2 process of qb->q'T, the 2->3 process of qg->q'Tb, the s-channel process of q bar(q)'->T bar{b}, and the gluon fusion process of gg->T bar{t}. We found that the 2->3 process can be quite important, as its cross section is about 30% of the 2->2 one and it is dominant in high p_T distributions. The s-channel and the gluon fusion processes also show distinctive features in spite of their suppressed cross sections. In the gluon fusion process of the simplest little Higgs model, for example, the pseudo-scalar contribution is rather dominant over the Higgs contribution for relatively light M_T.

Average Kinetic Energy of Heavy Quark ($μ_π^2$) inside Heavy Meson of $0^-$ State by Bethe-Salpeter Method

The average kinetic energy of the heavy quark inside $B$ or $D$ meson is computed by means of the instantaneous Bethe-Salpeter method. We first solve the relativistic Salpeter equation and obtain the relativistic wave function and mass of $0^{-}$ state, then we use the relativistic wave function to calculate the average kinetic energy of the heavy quark inside heavy meson of $0^{-}$ state. We find that the relativistic corrections to the average kinetic energy of the heavy quark inside $B$ or $D$ meson are quite large and cannot be ignored. We estimate $μ^2_π~ (= - λ_1)~ \approx~ 0.35~ (B^0,B^\pm)$, $~0.28~(D^0,D^\pm)$, $~ 0.43~(B_s)$, $~0.34~(D_s)$, $~0.96~(B_c)$ and $0.62~(η_c)$ GeV$^2$.

B_s^0 - \bar{B}_s^0 Mixing in Leptophobic Z^\prime Model

Leptophobic Z^\prime gauge boson appears naturally in many grand unified theories, such as flipped SU(5) or string-inspired E_6 models. This elusive particle easily escapes the direct/indirect detections because it does not couple to charged leptons. However, it can generate flavor changing neutral current at tree level. In this letter, we show that the recently measured mass difference, Δm_s, in the B_s^0 -\bar{B}_s^0 system improves the previous bound of flavor changing effective coupling by about one order of magnitude, i.e irrespective of its phase, |U_{sb}^{Z^\prime}| \leq 0.036 for M_{Z^\prime} = 700 GeV, and |U_{sb}^{Z^\prime}| \leq 0.051 for M_{Z^\prime} = 1 TeV.

Exchange and correlation effects on the plasmon dispersions and the Coulomb drag in low-density electron bilayers

We investigate the effect of exchange and correlation (xc) on the plasmon spectrum and the Coulomb drag between spatially separated low-density two-dimensional electron layers. We adopt a new approach, which employs dynamic xc kernels in the calculation of the bi-layer plasmon spectra and of the plasmon-mediated drag, and static many-body local field factors in the calculation of the particle-hole contribution to the drag. The spectrum of bi-layer plasmons and the drag resistivity are calculated in a broad range of temperatures taking into account both intra- and inter-layer correlation effects. We observe that both plasmon modes are strongly affected by xc corrections. After the inclusion of the complex dynamic xc kernels, a decrease of the electron density induces shifts of the plasmon branches in opposite directions. And this is in stark contrast to the tendency obtained within the RPA that both optical and acoustical plasmons move away from the boundary of the particle-hole continuum with a decrease in the electron density. We find that the introduction of xc corrections results in a significant enhancement of the transresistivity and qualitative changes in its temperature dependence. In particular, the large high-temperature plasmon peak that is present in the random phase approximation is found to disappear when the xc corrections are included. Our numerical results at low temperatures are in good agreement with the results of recent experiments by M. Kellogg {\it et al.}, Solid State Commun. \textbf{123}, 515 (2002).

Phased Breaking of mu-tau symmetry and Leptogenesis

Non-vanishing U_{e3} has been theoretically related to a certain flavor symmetry breaking in the neutrino sector. We propose a scenario to break the mu-tau symmetry so as to accommodate the non-vanishing U_{e3}. Our scenario is constructed in the context of a seesaw model, and the mu-tau symmetry breaking is achieved by introducing a CP phase in the Dirac Yukawa matrix. We also show how the deviation of theta_{23} from the maximal mixing and non-vanishing U_{e3} depend on the CP phase. Neutrino mixings and the neutrino mass-squared differences are discussed, and the amplitude in neutrinoless double beta decay m_{ee} are also predicted. We found that a tiny breaking of the mu-tau symmetry due to mass splitting between two degenerate heavy Majorana neutrinos on top of the Dirac CP phase can lead to successful leptogenesis. We examine how leptogenesis can be related with low energy neutrino measurement, and show that our predictions for U_{e3} and m_{ee} can be constrained by the current observation of baryon asymmetry.

Exchange and correlation effects on drag in low density electron bilayers: Coulomb and virtual-optical-phonon-mediated electron-electron interaction

We investigate the effect of exchange and correlation (xc) in low-density electron bilayers. Along with the direct Coulomb interaction, the effective electron-electron interaction mediated by the exchange of virtual polar optical (PO) phonons is considered. We find that the introduction of xc corrections results in a significant enhancement of the transresistivity and qualitative changes in its temperature dependence. The virtual PO-phonon contribution behaves similarly to the Coulomb drag and reduces noticeably the total drag thereby resulting in a better agreement with the recent experimental findings.

An Analysis of $B \to η' K$ Decays Using a Global Fit in QCD Factorization

In the framework of QCD factorization, we study $B^{+(0)} \to η' K^{+(0)}$ decays. In order to more reliably determine the phenomenological parameters $X_H$ and $X_A$ arising from end-point divergences in the hard spectator scattering and weak annihilation contributions, we use the global analysis for twelve $B \to PP$ and $VP$ decay modes, such as $B \to ππ$, $πK$, $ρπ$, $ρK$, etc, but excluding the modes whose (dominant) internal quark-level process is $b \to s \bar s s$. Based on the global analysis, we critically investigate possible magnitudes of $X_{H,A}$ and find that both large and small $X_{H,A}$ terms are allowed by the global fit. In the case of the large $X_{H,A}$ effects, the standard model (SM) prediction of the branching ratios (BRs) for $B^{+(0)} \to η' K^{+(0)}$ is large and well consistent with the experimental results. In contrast, in the case of the small $X_{H,A}$ effects, the SM prediction for these BRs is smaller than the experimental data. Motivated by the recent Belle measurement of $\sin (2ϕ_1)$ through $B^0 \to ϕK_s$, if we take into account possible new physics effects on the quark-level process $b \to s \bar s s$, we can explicitly show that these large BRs can be understood even in the small $X_{H,A}$ case. Specifically, we present two new physics scenarios: R-parity violating SUSY and R-parity conserving SUSY.

Annihilation Rate of Heavy $0^{-+}$ Quarkonium in Relativistic Salpeter Method

Two-photon and two-gluon annihilation rates of $η_c$, $η'_c$, $η_b$ and $η'_b$ are estimated in the relativistic Salpeter method. By solving the full Salpeter equation with a well defined relativistic wave function, we estimate $M_{η_c}=2.979\pm 0.432$ GeV, $M_{η'_c}=3.566\pm 0.437$ GeV, $M_{η_b}=9.364\pm 1.120$ GeV and $M_{η'_b}=9.941\pm 1.112$ GeV. We calculated the transition amplitude using the Mandelstam formalism and estimate the decay widths: $Γ(η_c \to 2γ)=7.14\pm 0.95$ KeV, $Γ(η'_c \to 2γ)=4.44\pm 0.48$ KeV, $Γ(η_b \to 2γ)=0.384\pm 0.047$ KeV and $Γ(η'_b \to 2γ)=0.191\pm 0.025$ KeV. We also give estimates of total widths by the two-gluon decay rates: $Γ_{tot}(η_c)=19.6\pm 2.6$ MeV, $Γ_{tot}(η'_c)=12.1\pm 1.3$ MeV, $Γ_{tot}(η_b)=6.98\pm 0.85$ MeV and $Γ_{tot}(η_b)=3.47\pm 0.45$ MeV.

CP Asymmetries of $B \to ϕK$ and $B \to η^{(\prime)} K$ Decays Using a Global Fit in QCD Factorization

We analyze the CP asymmetries of $B\to ϕK$ and $B\to η^{(\prime)} K$ modes in the QCD improved factorization framework. For our calculation we use the phenomenological parameters predetermined from the global fit for the available $B\to PP$ and $VP$ modes (without the quark-level subprocess $b\to s\bar s s$). We show that the large negative $\sin (2ϕ_1)_{ϕK_s}$ and the large branching ratio for $B^{\pm}\to η' K^{\pm}$ can be simultaneously explained in the context of supersymmetry (SUSY). The R-parity conserving SUGRA models are used and their parameter space is constrained with the observed dark matter relic density along with other experimental constraints. The R-parity violating SUSY models are also used to show that they can provide solutions. We calculate the CP asymmetries for different $B^{\pm (0)} \to ϕK^{\pm (0)}$ and $B^{\pm (0)} \to η^{(')} K^{\pm (0)}$ modes and show that the SUSY model predictions are consistent with the available experimental data.

Remarks on the recently observed B decays into $f_X(1300) K$ and $J/ψK_X^*(1430)$

In light of the recent experimental results on decays $B^+ \to f_X(1300) K^+$ and $B^{\pm(0)} \to J/ψK_X^{*\pm(0)}(1430)$ from Belle, we study the $B \to P(V) S$ type decays, $B^{\pm(0)} \to f_0(1370) K^{\pm(0)}$ and $B^{\pm(0)} \to J/ψK_0^{*\pm(0)}(1430)$, in comparison with the $B \to P(V) T$ type decays, $B^{\pm(0)} \to f_2(1270) K^{\pm(0)}$ and $B^{\pm(0)} \to J/ψK_2^{*\pm(0)}(1430)$. We calculate the BRs for these decays by using the form factors obtained in the ISGW2 model [the improved version of the original Isgur-Scora-Grinstein-Wise (ISGW) model], as well as the ISGW model for comparison. The ratios of ${\cal B}(B \to P(V)S) / {\cal B}(B \to P(V)T)$ are also presented.

A Flexible Parametrization of CKM matrix via Singular-Value-Decomposition Method

We investigate a flexible method in which we can test the unitarity of the quark flavor mixing matrix step-by-step. Singular-Value-Decomposition (SVD) techniques are used in analyzing the mixing matrix over a broader parameter region than the unitarity region. Unitary constraints make us extract CP violating properties without any specific parametrization when the magnitudes of at least three mixing matrix elements in three generation quark mixing are given. This method can also be applied to the analysis of lepton flavor mixing, in which only a few moduli are presently measured.

A study of semi-inclusive charmless $B \to πX$ decays

We study semi-inclusive charmless decays $B \to πX$ in detail, such as $\bar B^0 \to π^{\pm (0)} X$, $B^0 \to π^{\pm (0)} X$, $B^{\pm} \to π^{\pm (0)} X$, where $X$ does not contain a charm (anti)quark. We find that the process $\bar B^0 \to π^- X$ ($B^0 \to π^+ X$) can be particularly useful for determination of the CKM matrix element $|V_{ub}|$. We calculate and present the branching ratio (BR) of $\bar B^0 \to π^- X$ as a function of $|V_{ub}|$, with an estimate of possible uncertainties. It is expected that the BR is an order of $10^{-4}$. Our estimation indicates that one can phenomenologically determine $|V_{ub}|$ with reasonable accuracy by measuring the BR of $\bar B^0 \to π^- X$ ($B^0 \to π^+ X$).

Difficulties in Obtaining Weak Phases from $b\to d$ Penguin Decays

We re-examine a recent proposal for obtaining βusing the measurements of the b -> d penguin decays B_d(t) -> K^0 \kbar and B_s(t) -> ϕK_S, along with a theoretical assumption. We show that there are in fact three assumptions one can make, so that the method can in principle be used to extract α, βor γ. We also show that it is the assumption which yields γwhich is the best. However, the theoretical error on this assumption is still 25-30%, which leads to an error on γof at least 20-25%. Given our current understanding of hadronic physics, it does not seem possible to reduce this error.

Measurement of the Width Difference of B_d Mesons

We estimate ΔGamma_d/Γ_d, including 1/m_b contributions and part of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections, and find it to be around 0.3%. We show the methods to measure ΔGamma_d/Γ_d by using at least two different final states on the untagged B_d decay. The nonzero width difference can also be used to identify new physics effects and to resolve a twofold discrete ambiguity in the B_d-\bar{B}_d mixing phase. With the high statistics and accurate time resolution of the upcoming LHC experiment, the measurement of ΔGamma_d seems to be possible. This measurement would be important for an accurate measurement of \sin2ϕ_1 at the LHC. We also derive an upper bound on the value of ΔGamma_d/Γ_d in the presence of new physics.

On Lepton Flavor Violation in Tau Decays

We study lepton flavor violation (LFV) in tau decays induced by heavy Majorana neutrinos within two models: (I) the Standard Model with additional right-handed heavy Majorana neutrinos, i.e., a typical seesaw-type model; (II) the Standard Model with left-handed and right-handed neutral singlets, which are inspired by certain scenarios of SO(10)models and heterotic superstring models with E_6 symmetry. We calculate various LFV branching ratios and a T-odd asymmetry. The seesaw Model I predicts very small branching ratios for LFV processes in most of the parameter space, although in a very restricted parameter region it can reach maximal branching ratios Br(tau to mu gamma) approx 10^-9 and Br(tau to 3mu) approx 10^-10. In contrast, Model II may show branching ratios Br(tau to e gamma) approx 10^-8 and Br(tau to 3e) < 10^-9, over a sizable region of the parameter space, large enough to be tested by experiments in the near future.

Charmless Hadronic Decays of B Mesons to a Pseudoscalar and a Tensor Meson

We study two-body charmless hadronic decays of $B$ mesons to a pseudoscalar meson ($P$) and a tensor meson ($T$) in the frameworks of both flavor SU(3) symmetry and generalized factorization. Certain ways to test validity of the generalized factorization are proposed, based on the flavor SU(3) analysis. We present a set of relations between a flavor SU(3) amplitude and a corresponding amplitude in the generalized factorization which bridge both approaches in $B \to PT$ decays. The branching ratios and CP asymmetries are calculated using the \emph{full} effective Hamiltonian including all the \emph{penguin} operators and the form factors obtained in the non-relativistic quark model of Isgur, Scora, Grinstein and Wise. We identify the decay modes in which the branching ratios and CP asymmetries are expected to be relatively large.

Measurement of the Lifetime Difference of $B_d$ Mesons: Possible and Worthwhile?

We estimate the decay width difference $ΔGamma_d / Γ_d$ in the $B_d$ system including $1/m_b$ contributions and next-to-leading order QCD corrections, and find it to be around 0.3%. We explicitly show that the time measurements of an untagged $B_d$ decaying to a single final state isotropically can only be sensitive to quadratic terms in $ΔGamma_d / Γ_d$, and hence the use of at least two different final states is desired. We discuss such pairs of candidate decay channels for the final states and explore the feasibility of a $ΔGamma_d / Γ_d$ measurement through them. The measurement of this width difference is essential for an accurate measurement of $\sin(2β)$ at the LHC. The nonzero width difference may also be used to identify new physics effects and to resolve a twofold discrete ambiguity in the $B_d$-$\bar{B}_d$ mixing phase. We also derive an upper bound on the value of $ΔGamma_d / Γ_d$ in the presence of new physics, and point out some differences in the phenomenology of width differences in the $B_s$ and $B_d$ systems.

Measuring sin 2βin Bs(t) -> phi K_s

We show that, unlike other pure b -> d penguin processes, the decay Bs(t) -> phi K_s is dominated by a single amplitude, that of the internal t-quark. The contributions of the u- and c-quark operators each vanish due to a cancellation between the (V-A) \otimes (V-A) and (V-A) \otimes (V+A) matrix elements. Thus, the indirect CP asymmetry in this decay probes sin 2β. Although this cancellation is complete only for certain values of the s- and b-quark masses, the theoretical uncertainty on sin 2βis still less than 10% over most (~80%) of the parameter space. By measuring the direct CP asymmetry, one can get a better idea of the probable error on sin 2β.

A Systematic Analysis of the Exclusive B -> K^* l^+ l^- Decay

A model-independent analysis for the exclusive, rare B -> K^* l^+ l^- decay is presented. Systematically studied are the experimentally measured quantities, such as, branching ratio, forward-backward asymmetry, longitudinal polarization of the final leptons, and the ratio $Γ_L/Γ_T$ of the decay widths when $K^\ast$ meson is longitudinally and transversally polarized. The dependence of the asymmetry parameter $α= 2 Γ_L/Γ_T -1$ on the new Wilson coefficients is also studied in detail. It is found that the afore-mentioned physical observables are quite sensitive to the new Wilson coefficients. Therefore, once we have the experimental data with high statistics and a deviation from the Standard Model, we can interpret the source of such discrepancy.

Hadronic Invariant Mass Spectrum in B -> X_u l nu Decay with Lepton Energy Cut

We discuss the implications of charged lepton energy cut to the hadronic invariant mass spectrum in charmless semileptonic B decays. Charged-lepton energy cut is inevitable in order to remove secondary leptonic events such as b -> c, tau -> l, and to identify the chaged leptons at detectors experimentally. We consider three possible lepton energy cuts, E_l^{cuts} = 0.6,1.5,2.3 GeV, and found that with the most probable cuts E_l^{cut} = 1.5 GeV and M_X^{max} = 1.5~(1.86) GeV, 45 ~ 60 % ~(58 ~ 67 %) of decay events survive. Therefore, B -> X_u l nu decay events can be efficiently distinguished from B -> X_c l nu decay events. We also discuss the possible model dependence on the results.

Measurement of |V_{ub}/V_{cb}| (and |V_{ub}|) in Exclusive Nonleptonic Decays, \bar{B}^0 --> D_s^{(*)-}(π^+,ρ^+) and \bar{B}^0 --> D_s^{(*)-}D^{(*)+}

We have studied extracting $|\vub/\vcb|$ by calculating the ratios ${\cal B}(\bar{B}^0\to D_s^{(*)-}(π^+,ρ^+))/{\cal B}(\bar{B}^0\to D_s^{(*)-}D^{(*)+})$ including penguin effects within the factorization assumption. The ratios involving $\bar{B}^0\to D_s^-D^{+}$ mode have considerable penguin corrections ($\sim 15%$ at the amplitude level), but those involving $\bar{B}^0\to D_s^-D^{*+}$ mode have relatively small penguin corrections. On the other hand, the $\bar{B}^0\to D_s^-D^{+}$ mode has smaller form-factor dependance. Therefore, these ratios complement each other in measuring $\vub/\vcb$. The theoretical uncertainty from the hadronic form factors in our method is at the level of 15%, which is comparable to the model-dependence uncertainty of about 20% in the measurement of $| \vub/\vcb |$ from the exclusive semileptonic B decays. Using the newest upper limit on $B\to D_s π$ decay from CLEO, our method sets an upper limit $| \vub/\vcb | < 0.13$ which is very close to the measured values from the semileptonic B decays. We also discuss the possible breaking of factorization assumption.

CP Violation in the Semileptonic B_{l4} (B^\pm -> pi^+ π^- l^\pm ν) Decays

Direct CP violations in $B_{l4}$ decays ($B^\pm \to π^+π^- l^\pm ν_l$) are investigated within the Standard Model (SM) and also in its extensions. In the decay processes, we include various excited states as intermediate states decaying to the final hadrons, $π^+ + π^-$. The CP violation within the SM is induced by the interferences between intermediate resonances with different quark flavors. As extensions of the SM, we consider CP violations implemented through complex scalar-fermion couplings in the multi-Higgs doublet model and the scalar-leptoquark models. We calculate the CP-odd rate asymmetry and the optimal asymmetry. We find that the optimal asymmetry can be measured at $1σ$ level with about $10^9$ $B$-meson pairs in the SM case and $10^3$--$10^7$ pairs in the extended model case, for maximally-allowed values of CP-odd parameters in each case.

Hierarchical Quark Mixing and Bimaximal Lepton Mixing on the Same Footing

We also reproduce the recently measured angle of unitary triangle, $\sin 2β$, as well as all the observed experimental values of $V_{\tiny CKM}$ of the quark CKM matrix. And we predict Jarlskog rephasing invariant quantity, $J_{\tiny CP} \simeq 0.18 \times 10^{-4}$, and the upper bound of the same quantity in the lepton sector, $J^l_{\tiny CP} \leq 0.012$, which may be indeed large enough to generate the lepton number violation of the universe.

Searching for New Physics in the b->d FCNC using B_s^0(t)->ϕK_s and B_d^0(t)->K^0\bar{K}^0

Time-dependent measurements of the decays B_s^0(t)-->ϕK_s and B_d^0(t) --> K^0 \bar{K}^0 can be used to compare the weak phases of B_d^0-\bar{B}_d^0 mixing and the t-quark contribution to the b->d penguin. Since these two phases are equal in the standard model, any discrepancy would be a sign of new physics, specifically in the b->d flavour-changing neutral current (FCNC). The most general model-independent analysis of the rare $B$ decay, $\Bsll$, is presented. There are ten independent local four-Fermi interactions which may contribute to this process. The branching ratio, the forward-backward asymmetry, and the double differential rate are written as functions of the Wilson coefficients of the ten operators. We also study the correlation between the branching ratio and the forward-backward asymmetry by changing each coefficient. CP Violation in the Semileptonic $B_{l4}$ ($B->D πl ν$) Decays: Multi-Higgs Doublet Model and Scalar-Leptoquark Models

CP violation from physics beyond the Standard Model is investigated in $B_{l4}$ decays: $B\to Dπl\barν_l$. In the decay process, we include various excited states as intermediate states decaying to the final hadrons, $D+π$. We consider the semileptonic decay to a tau lepton family as well. The CP violation is implemented through complex scalar--fermion couplings in the multi-Higgs doublet model and scalar-leptoquark models beyond the Standard Model. With these complex couplings, we calculate the CP-odd rate asymmetry and the optimal asymmetry. We find that for $B_{τ4}$ decays the optimal asymmetry is sizable and can be detected at $1σ$ level with about $10^6$-$10^7$ $B$-meson pairs, for maximally-allowed values of CP-odd parameters in those extended models.

CP Violation in the Top-Quark Pair Production at a Next Linear Collider

We provide a detailed, model-independent, study for CP violation effects due to the T-odd top-quark electric dipole moment (EDM) and weak dipole moment (WDM) in the top-quark pair production via $e^+e^-$ and two-photon annihilation at a next $e^+e^-$ linear collider (NLC). There are two methods in detecting CP violation effects in these processes. One method makes use of measurements of various spin correlations in the final decay products of the produced top-quark pair, while the other is to measure various CP-odd polarization asymmetry effects of the initial states. In the $e^+e^-$ case only the first method can be used, and in the $γγ$ case both methods can be employed. We provide a complete classification of angular correlations of the $t$ and $\bar{t}$ decay products under CP and CP\tilde{T} which greatly faciliate CP tests in the $e^+e^-$ mode. Concentrating on the second method with the Compton back-scattered high-energetic laser light off the electron or positron beam in the two-photon mode, we construct two CP-odd and CP\tilde{T}-even initial polarization configurations and apply them to investigating CP-violating effects due to the top-quark EDM. With a typical set of experimental parameters at the NLC, we compare the 1-σsensitivities to the top-quark EDM and WDM in the $e^+e^-$ mode and the two-photon mode. Some model expectation values of the T-odd parameters are compared with the results.

Has the general two-Higgs-doublet model unnatural FCNC suppression? An RGE analysis

There is a widespread belief that the general two-Higgs-doublet model (G2HDM) behaves unnaturally with respect to evolution of the flavor-changing neutral Yukawa coupling parameters (FCNYCP's) -- i.e., that the latter, although being suppressed at low energies of probes, in general increase by a large factor as the energy of probes increases. We investigate this, by evolving Yukawa parameters by one-loop renormalization group equations (RGE's) and neglecting contributions of the first quark generation. For patterns of FCNYCP suppression at low energies suggested by the existing quark mass hierarchies, FCNYCP's remain remarkably stable (suppressed) up to energies very close to the Landau pole. This indicates that G2HDM preserves FCNYCP suppression, for reasonably chosen patterns of that suppression at low energies.

As of my main topic, I introduce a model-independent method, which predicts Γ(B -> X_u l ν) / Γ(B -> X_c l ν) \equiv (γ_u / γ_c) \times | V_{ub} / V_{cb}|^2 \simeq (1.83 \pm 0.28) \times |V_ub / V_cb|^2 and |V_ub/V_cb| \equiv (γ_c / γ_u)^{1/2} \times [{\cal{B}}(B -> X_u l ν)/{\cal{B}}(B -> X_c l ν)]^{1/2} \simeq (0.74 \pm 0.06) \times [{\cal{B}}(B -> X_u l ν)/ {\cal{B}}(B -> X_c l ν)]^{1/2}, based on the heavy quark effective theory. I also explore the possible experimental options to separate B -> X_u l νfrom the dominant B -> X_c l ν: the measurement of inclusive hadronic invariant mass distributions, and the `D - π' (and `K - π') separation conditions. I also clarify the relevant experimental backgrounds.

Using B_s^0 Decays to Determine the CP Angles αand γ

Dighe, Gronau and Rosner have shown that, by assuming SU(3) flavor symmetry and first-order SU(3) breaking, it is possible to extract the CP angles αand γfrom measurements of the decay rates of B_d^0(t) --> π^+π^-, B_d^0 --> π^- K^+ and B^+ --> π^+ K^0, along with their charge-conjugate processes. We extend their analysis to include the SU(3)-related decays B_s^0 --> π^+ K^-, B_s^0(t) --> K^+ K^- and B_s^0 --> K^0 {\bar K^0}. There are several advantages to this extension: discrete ambiguities are removed, fewer assumptions are necessary, and the method works even if all strong phases vanish. In addition, we show that γcan be obtained cleanly, with no penguin contamination, by using the two decays B_s^0(t) --> K^+ K^- and B_s^0 --> K^0 {\bar K^0}.

Virtual SUSY Threshold Effects and CDF large $E_{T}$ Anomaly

Recent CDF data of the inclusive jet cross section shows threshold-like structured deviation, around transverse momentum $E_T(j)\approx 200 \sim 350$ GeV. If this data is real, not just some statistical fluctuation, is it possible to interpret the anomaly in terms of virtual SUSY effects? The purpose of this note is to address this question. However, we find that virtual SUSY loop interference effects [near the threshold] are too small to explain the CDF data. Our main conclusion seems to be on the right track if we assume that the recent global analysis of improved parton distributions by Lai et al. is correct. Average Kinetic Energy of Heavy Quark in Semileptonic B Decay

Within the ACCMM model the average kinetic energy of heavy quark in a heavy-light meson is calculated as $\langle {\bf p}^2 \rangle = {3 \over 2} {p_{_F}}^2$, solely from the fact that the Gaussian momentum probability distribution has been taken in the ACCMM model. Therefore, the Fermi momentum parameter $p_{_F}$ of the ACCMM model is not a truly free parameter, but is closely related to the average kinetic energy of heavy quark, which is theoretically calculable in principle. In this context, we determine $p_{_F}$ by comparing the theoretical prediction of the ACCMM model with the model independent lepton energy spectrum of $B \rightarrow e νX$ from the recent CLEO analysis, and find that $p_{_F}=0.54~\pm~^{0.16}_{0.15}$ GeV. We also calculate $p_{_F}$ in the relativistic quark model by applying the quantum mechanical variational method, and obtained $p_{_F}=0.5\sim 0.6$ GeV. We show the correspondences between the relativistic quark model and the heavy quark effective theory. We then clarify the importance of the value of $p_{_F}$ in the determination of $|V_{ub}/V_{cb}|$.

Color-Octet Contributions in the Associate J/psi+gamma Hadroproduction

Color-octet contributions to the associate J/psi+gamma hadroproduction are studied in detail, and found to be negligible, compared to the ordinary color-singlet contribution. Within the color-singlet model the J/psi+gamma production in the leading order is possible only through gluon-gluon fusion process. Therefore, the associate J/psi+gamma hadroproduction remains to be useful as a clean channel to probe the gluon distribution inside proton, to study heavy quarkonia production mechanism, and to find proton's spin structure.

Form Factors for Exclusive Semileptonic $B$--Decays

We investigate the form factors for exclusive semileptonic decays of $B$-meson to $D,~D^*$, based on the parton picture and helped by the results of the HQET. We obtain the numerical results for the slope of the Isgur-Wise function, which is consistent with the experimental results, and we extracte the dependences of hadronic form factors on $q^2$ by varying input heavy quark fragmentation function without the nearest pole dominance ansätze.

Dependence of $|V_{ub}/V_{cb}|$ on Fermi momentum $p_{_F}$ in ACCMM model

The Gaussian width of Fermi momentum, $p_{_F}$, is the most important parameter of the ACCMM model, and its value is essential in the determination of $|V_{ub}/V_{cb}|$ because the experimental analysis is allowed only at the end-point region of inclusive semileptonic $B$-decay spectrum. We extract the value of $|V_{ub}/V_{cb}|$ as a function of $p_{_F}$. We also calculate the parameter $p_{_F}$ in the relativistic quark model using the variational method, and obtain $p_{_F} = 0.54$ GeV which is much larger than the commonly used value, $\sim 0.3$ GeV, in experimental analyses. When we use $p_{_F} = 0.5$ GeV instead of 0.3 GeV, the value of $|V_{ub}/V_{cb}|$ from ACCMM model is increased by a factor 1.81, and can give a good agreement with Isgur {\it et al.} model.

INVESTIGATION OF $WWγ$ COUPLINGS

We investigated how measurements of weak boson production at high energy $ep$ and $eγ$ collisions can provide important information on anomalous $WWγ$ couplings. We also considerd the sinlge muon production through the virtual $W$-decay at the Pohang Light Source (PLS) facility, and found this process is not adequate to be detected at the PLS until a large luminosity ($\sim 10^{33}$/sec/cm$^2$) Free Electron Laser is installed.

Determination of V_ub at the Z-boson resonance

We show that the observation of energetic charged leptons from semileptonic $b$ becays at the LEP and SLC $Z$--boson factories offers a unique opportunity to measure the quark mixing matrix element $V_{ub}$. We present various distributions of the $b$ decay products to show that the $b \to u$ decays can be cleanly separated from the $b \to c$ decays, with a signal of $O(100)$ events per million $Z$ bosons produced.

New Approach for Measuring $|V_{ub}|$ at Future $B$-Factories

It is suggested that the measurements of hadronic invariant mass ($m_X$) distributons in the inclusive $B \rightarrow X_{c(u)} l ν$ decays can be useful in extracting the CKM matrix element $|V_{ub}|$. We investigated hadronic invariant mass distributions within the various theoretical models of HQET, FAC and chiral lagrangian as well as ACCMM model. It is also emphasized that the $m_X$ distribution even at the region $m_{X} > m_{D}$ in the inclusive $b\rightarrow u$ are effetive in selecting the events, experimentally viable at the future asymmetric $B$ factories, with better theoretical understandings.

Flavor Democracy in Standard Models at High Energies

It is possible that the standard model (SM) is replaced around some transition energy $\E_{tr}$ by a new, possibly Higgsless, ``flavor gauge theory'' such that the Yukawa (running) parameters of SM at $E \sim \E_{tr}$ show up an (approximate) flavor democracy (FD). We investigate the latter possibility by studying the renormalization group equations for the Yukawa couplings of SM with one and two Higgs doublets, by evolving them from given physical values at low energies ($E \simeq 1 GeV$) to $\E_{tr}$ ($ \sim \E_{pole}$) and comparing the resulting fermion masses and CKM matrix elements at $E \simeq \E_{tr}$ for various $m_t^{phy}$ and ratios $v_u/v_d$ of vacuum expectation values. We find that the minimal SM and the closely related SM with two Higgs doublets (type I) show increasing deviation from FD when energy is increased, but that SM with two Higgs doublets (type II) clearly tends to FD with increasing energy - in both the quark and the leptonic sector (q-q and l-l FD). Furthermore, we find within the type II model that, for $\E_{pole} \ll \E_{Planck}$, $m_t^{phy}$ can be less than $200 GeV$ in most cases of chosen $v_u/v_d$. Under the assumption that also the corresponding Yukawa couplings in the quark and the leptonic sector at $E \simeq \E_{tr}$ are equal (l-q FD), we derive estimates of bounds on masses of top quark and tau-neutrino, which are compatible with experimental bounds.

Hadronic $W$ production and the Gottfried Sum Rule

The difference in production rate between $W^+$ and $W^-$ at hadron colliders is very sensitive to the the difference between up- and down-quark distributions in the proton. This sensitivity allows for a variety of useful measurements. We consider the difference $d_s(x,Q^2) - u_s(x,Q^2)$ in the sea distributions and the difference $Δu(x,Q^2) - Δd(x,Q^2)$ in the polarized parton distribution functions. In both cases we construct an asymmetry to reduce systematic uncertainties. Although we discuss measurements at the Tevatron and future hadron colliders, we find that the Brookhaven Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) is the most appropriate hadron collider for these measurements.

Probing $WWγ$ Couplings from $σ_{tot}(W)/σ_{tot}(Z)$ in High Energy ep Collisions

We investigate the sensitivity of total cross sections of $e+p \rightarrow W,Z$ to CP-conserving non-standard $WWγ$ couplings. We include all the important production mechanisms and study the dependence of the total $W$ cross sections on the anomalous $WWγ$ couplings, $κ$ and $λ$. We argue that the ratio of $W$ and $Z$ production cross sections is particularly well suited, being relatively insensitive to uncertainties in the theoretical and experimental parameters.
