An improved search for the electric dipole moment of the ττ lepton

We report a measurement of the electric dipole moment of the ττ lepton (dτd_τ) using an 833~fb−1^{-1} data sample collected near the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance, with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+ e^- collider. Using an optimal observable method, we obtain the real and imaginary parts of dτd_τ as Re(dτ)=(−0.62±0.63)×10−17 ecm{\rm Re}(d_τ) = ( -0.62 \pm 0.63 ) \times 10^{-17} ~e{\rm cm} and Im(dτ)=(−0.40±0.32)×10−17 ecm{\rm Im}(d_τ) = ( -0.40 \pm 0.32 ) \times 10^{-17} ~e{\rm cm}, respectively. These results are consistent with null electric dipole moment at the present level of experimental sensitivity and improve the sensitivity by about a factor of three.

Observation of Coulomb-assisted nuclear bound state of Ξ−Ξ^--14^{14}N system

In an emulsion-counter hybrid experiment performed at J-PARC, a Ξ−Ξ^- absorption event was observed which decayed into twin single-ΛΛ hypernuclei. Kinematic calculations enabled a unique identification of the reaction process as Ξ−+14Ξ^{-} + ^{14}N → Λ10\ \rightarrow\ ^{10}_ΛBe + Λ5^5_ΛHe. For the binding energy of the Ξ−Ξ^{-} hyperon in the Ξ−Ξ^--14^{14}N system a value of 1.27±0.211.27 \pm 0.21 MeV was deduced. The energy level of Ξ−Ξ^- is likely a nuclear 1p1p state which indicates a weak ΞNΞN-ΛΛΛΛ coupling.

Search for lepton-number- and baryon-number-violating tau decays at Belle

We search for lepton-number- and baryon-number-violating decays τ−→p‾e+e−τ^{-}\to\overline{p}e^{+}e^{-}, pe−e−pe^{-}e^{-}, p‾e+μ−\overline{p}e^{+}μ^{-}, p‾e−μ+\overline{p}e^{-}μ^{+}, p‾μ+μ−\overline{p}μ^{+}μ^{-}, and pμ−μ−pμ^{-}μ^{-} using 921 fb−1^{-1} of data, equivalent to (841±12)×106(841\pm12)\times 10^6 τ+τ−τ^{+}τ^{-} events, recorded with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^{+}e^{-} collider. In the absence of a signal, 90%90\% confidence-level upper limits are set on the branching fractions of these decays in the range (1.8(1.8-4.0)×10−84.0)\times 10^{-8}. We set the world's first limits on the first four channels and improve the existing limits by an order of magnitude for the last two channels.

Evidence for a vector charmonium-like state in e+e−→Ds+Ds2∗(2573)−+c.c.e^+e^- \to D^+_sD^*_{s2}(2573)^-+c.c.

We report the measurement of e+e−→Ds+Ds2∗(2573)−+c.c.e^+e^- \to D^+_sD^*_{s2}(2573)^-+c.c. via initial-state radiation using a data sample of an integrated luminosity of 921.9 fb−1^{-1} collected with the Belle detector at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) and nearby. We find evidence for an enhancement with a 3.4σσ significance in the invariant mass of Ds+Ds2∗(2573)−+c.c.D^+_sD^*_{s2}(2573)^- +c.c. The measured mass and width are (4619.8−8.0+8.9(stat.)±2.3(syst.)) MeV/c2(4619.8^{+8.9}_{-8.0}({\rm stat.})\pm2.3({\rm syst.}))~{\rm MeV}/c^{2} and (47.0−14.8+31.3(stat.)±4.6(syst.)) MeV(47.0^{+31.3}_{-14.8}({\rm stat.})\pm4.6({\rm syst.}))~{\rm MeV}, respectively. The mass, width, and quantum numbers of this enhancement are consistent with the charmonium-like state at 4626 MeV/c2c^2 recently reported by Belle in e+e−→Ds+Ds1(2536)−+c.c.e^+e^-\to D^+_sD_{s1}(2536)^-+c.c. The product of the e+e−→Ds+Ds2∗(2573)−+c.c.e^+e^-\to D^+_sD^*_{s2}(2573)^-+c.c. cross section and the branching fraction of Ds2∗(2573)−→Dˉ0K−D^*_{s2}(2573)^-\to{\bar D}^0K^- is measured from Ds+Ds2∗(2573)−D^+_sD^*_{s2}(2573)^- threshold to 5.6 GeV.

First search for the ηc2(1D)η_{c2}(1D) in BB decays at Belle

The first dedicated search for the ηc2(1D)η_{c2}(1D) is carried out using the decays B+→ηc2(1D)K+B^+ \rightarrow η_{c2}(1D) K^+, B0→ηc2(1D)KS0B^0 \rightarrow η_{c2}(1D) K^0_S, B0→ηc2(1D)π−K+B^0 \rightarrow η_{c2}(1D) π^- K^+, and B+→ηc2(1D)π+KS0B^+ \rightarrow η_{c2}(1D) π^+ K^0_S with ηc2(1D)→hcγη_{c2}(1D) \to h_c γ. No significant signal is found. For the ηc2(1D)η_{c2}(1D) mass range between 37953795 and 3845 MeV/c23845\ \mathrm{MeV}/c^2, the branching-fraction upper limits are determined to be B(B+→ηc2(1D)K+)×B(ηc2(1D)→hcγ)<3.7×10−5\mathcal{B}(B^+ \rightarrow η_{c2}(1D) K^+) \times \mathcal{B}(η_{c2}(1D) \to h_c γ) < 3.7 \times 10^{-5}, B(B0→ηc2(1D)KS0)×B(ηc2(1D)→hcγ)<3.5×10−5\mathcal{B}(B^0 \rightarrow η_{c2}(1D) K^0_S) \times \mathcal{B}(η_{c2}(1D) \to h_c γ) < 3.5 \times 10^{-5}, B(B0→ηc2(1D)π−K+)×B(ηc2(1D)→hcγ)<1.0×10−4\mathcal{B}(B^0 \rightarrow η_{c2}(1D) π^- K^+) \times \mathcal{B}(η_{c2}(1D) \to h_c γ) < 1.0 \times 10^{-4}, and B(B+→ηc2(1D)π+KS0)×B(ηc2(1D)→hcγ)<1.1×10−4\mathcal{B}(B^+ \rightarrow η_{c2}(1D) π^+ K^0_S) \times \mathcal{B}(η_{c2}(1D) \to h_c γ) < 1.1 \times 10^{-4} at 90% C. L. The analysis is based on the 711 fb−1\mathrm{fb}^{-1} data sample collected on the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance by the Belle detector, which operated at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+ e^- collider.

Measurement of time-dependent CP violation parameters in B0→K0SK0SK0SB^0 \to K_0^SK_0^SK_0^S decays at Belle

We measure the time-dependent C ⁣PC\!P violation parameters in B0→KS0KS0KS0B^{0} \to K^{0}_{S}K^{0}_{S}K^{0}_{S} decays using 772×106772 \times 10^6 BB‾B {\mkern 1.5mu\overline{\mkern-1.5mu B \mkern-0.1mu}\mkern 0.1mu} pairs collected at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+ e^- collider. The obtained mixing-induced and direct C ⁣PC\!P asymmetries are −0.71±0.23 (stat)±0.05 (syst)-0.71 \pm 0.23~{\rm(stat)} \pm 0.05~{\rm(syst)} and 0.12±0.16 (stat)±0.05 (syst)0.12 \pm 0.16~{\rm(stat)} \pm 0.05~{\rm(syst)}, respectively. These values are consistent with the Standard Model predictions. The significance of C ⁣PC\!P violation differs from zero by 2.5 standard deviations.

Measurement of two-particle correlations in hadronic e+e−e^{+}e^{-} collisions at Belle

The enhancement of charged-particle pairs with large pseudorapidity difference and small azimuthal angle difference, often referred to as the ``ridge signal'', is a phenomenon widely observed in high multiplicity proton-proton, proton-ion and deutron-ion collisions, which is not yet fully understood. In heavy-ion collisions, the hydrodynamic expansion of the Quark-Gluon Plasma is one of the possible explanations of the origin of the ridge signal. Measurements in the e+e−e^+e^- collision system, without the complexities introduced by hadron structure in the initial state, can serve as a complementary probe to examine the formation of a ridge signal. The first measurement of two-particle angular correlation functions in high multiplicity e+e−e^+e^- collisions at s=10.52\sqrt{s}=10.52 GeV is reported. The hadronic e+e−e^+e^- annihilation data collected by the Belle detector at KEKB are used in this study. Two-particle angular correlation functions are measured over the full azimuth and large pseudorapidity intervals which are defined by either the electron beam axis or the event thrust as a function of charged particle multiplicity. The measurement in the event thrust analysis, with mostly outgoing quark pairs determining the reference axis, is sensitive to the region of additional soft gluon emissions. No significant ridge signal is observed with either coordinates analyses. Near side jet correlations appear to be absent in the thrust axis analysis. The measurements are compared to predictions from various event generators and expected to provide new constraints to the phenomenological models in the low energy regime.

Search for B0B^0 Decays to Invisible Final States (+γ+γ) at Belle

We report searches for B0→invisibleB^0\to\rm{invisible} and B0→invisible+γB^0\to\rm{invisible}+γ decays, where the energy of the photon is required to be larger than 0.5 GeV. These results are obtained from a 711 fb−1711\,{\rm fb}^{-1} data sample that contains 772×106BBˉ772 \times 10^6 B\bar{B} pairs and was collected near the Υ (4S)Υ\,(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e−e^+ e^- collider. We observe no significant signal for either decay and set upper limits on their branching fractions at 90%90\% confidence level of B (B0→invisible)<7.8×10−5\mathcal{B}\,(B^0\to\rm{invisible}) < 7.8\times10^{-5} and B (B0→invisible+γ)<1.6×10−5\mathcal{B}\,(B^0\to\rm{invisible}+γ) < 1.6\times10^{-5}.

Search for the Decay Bs0→η′ηB_s^0 \rightarrow η^\prime η

In the Standard Model (SM) charmless hadronic decays Bs0→η′ηB_s^0 \rightarrow η^\prime η proceed via tree-level b→ub\to u and penguin b→sb\to s transitions. Penguin transitions are sensitive to Beyond-the-Standard-Model (BSM) physics scenarios and could affect the branching fractions and {\it CP} asymmetries in such decays. Once branching fractions for two-body decays Bs→ηη,ηη′,η′η′B_s \to ηη, ηη^{\prime}, η^{\prime}η^{\prime} are measured, and the theoretical uncertainties are reduced, it would be possible to extract {\it CP} violating parameters from the data using the formalism based on SU(3)/U(3) symmetry. To achieve this goal, at least four of these six branching fractions need to be measured. Only the branching fraction for Bs0→η′η′B_s^0 \to η^{\prime}η^{\prime} has been measured so far.

Measurement of R(D)\mathcal{R}(D) and R(D∗)\mathcal{R}(D^*) with a semileptonic tagging method

The experimental results on the ratios of branching fractions R(D)=B(Bˉ→Dτ−νˉτ)/B(Bˉ→Dℓ−νˉℓ)\mathcal{R}(D) = {\cal B}(\bar{B} \to D τ^- \barν_τ)/{\cal B}(\bar{B} \to D \ell^- \barν_{\ell}) and R(D∗)=B(Bˉ→D∗τ−νˉτ)/B(Bˉ→D∗ℓ−νˉℓ)\mathcal{R}(D^*) = {\cal B}(\bar{B} \to D^* τ^- \barν_τ)/{\cal B}(\bar{B} \to D^* \ell^- \barν_{\ell}), where ℓ\ell denotes an electron or a muon, show a long-standing discrepancy with the Standard Model predictions, and might hint to a violation of lepton flavor universality. We report a new simultaneous measurement of R(D)\mathcal{R}(D) and R(D∗)\mathcal{R}(D^*), based on a data sample containing 772×106772 \times 10^6 BBˉB\bar{B} events recorded at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e−e^+ e^- collider. In this analysis the tag-side BB meson is reconstructed in a semileptonic decay mode and the signal-side ττ is reconstructed in a purely leptonic decay. The measured values are R(D)=0.307±0.037±0.016\mathcal{R}(D)= 0.307 \pm 0.037 \pm 0.016 and R(D∗)=0.283±0.018±0.014\mathcal{R}(D^*) = 0.283 \pm 0.018 \pm 0.014, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These results are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions within 0.20.2, 1.11.1 and 0.80.8 standard deviations for R(D)\mathcal{R}(D), R(D∗)\mathcal{R}(D^*) and their combination, respectively. This work constitutes the most precise measurements of R(D)\mathcal{R}(D) and R(D∗)\mathcal{R}(D^*) performed to date as well as the first result for R(D)\mathcal{R}(D) based on a semileptonic tagging method.

Observation of the radiative decays of Υ(1S)Υ(1S) to χc1χ_{c1}

We report the first observation of the radiative decay of the Υ(1S)Υ(1S) into a charmonium state. The statistical significance of the observed signal of Υ(1S)→γχc1Υ(1S) \to γχ_{c1} is 6.3 standard deviations including systematics. The branching fraction is calculated to be Br(Υ(1S)→γχc1Υ(1S) \to γχ_{c1}) = (4.7^{+2.4}_{-1.8} (stat) ^{+0.4}_{-0.5} (sys)) * 10^{-5}. We also searched for Υ(1S)Υ(1S) radiative decays into χc0,2χ_{c0,2} and ηc(1S,2S)η_c(1S,2S) and set upper limits on their branching fractions. These results are obtained from a 24.9 fb^{-1} data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+e^- collider at a center-of-mass energy equal to the Υ(2S)Υ(2S) mass using Υ(1S)Υ(1S) tagging by the Υ(2S)→Υ(1S)π+π−Υ(2S) \to Υ(1S) π^+π^- transitions.
