Structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of nearly-ideal $J_{\rm eff}$ $=$ 1/2 iridium halides

Heavy transition metal magnets with $J_{\rm eff}$ $=$ 1/2 electronic ground states have attracted recent interest due to their penchant for hosting new classes of quantum spin liquids and superconductors. Unfortunately, model systems with ideal $J_{\rm eff}$ $=$ 1/2 states are scarce due to the importance of non-cubic local distortions in most candidate materials. In this work, we identify a family of iridium halide systems [i.e. K$_2$IrCl$_6$, K$_2$IrBr$_6$, (NH$_4$)$_2$IrCl$_6$, and Na$_2$IrCl$_6 \cdotp $ 6(H$_2$O)] with Ir$^{4+}$ electronic ground states in extremely close proximity to the ideal $J_{\rm eff}$ $=$ 1/2 limit, despite a variation in the low-temperature global crystal structures. We also find ordered magnetic ground states for the three anhydrous systems, with single crystal neutron diffraction on K$_2$IrBr$_6$ revealing Type-I antiferromagnetism. This spin configuration is consistent with expectations for significant Kitaev exchange in a face-centered-cubic magnet.

Enhanced electron-phonon coupling for charge-density-wave formation in La$_{1.8-x}$Eu$_{0.2}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4+δ}$

Charge density wave (CDW) correlations are prevalent in all copper-oxide superconductors. While CDWs in conventional metals are driven by coupling between lattice vibrations and electrons, the role of the electron-phonon coupling (EPC) in cuprate CDWs is strongly debated. Using Cu $L_3$ edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS), we study the CDW and Cu-O bond-stretching phonons in the stripe-ordered cuprate La$_{1.8-x}$Eu$_{0.2}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4+δ}$. We investigate the interplay between charge order and EPC as a function of doping and temperature, and find that the EPC is enhanced in a narrow momentum region around the CDW wave vector. By detuning the incident photon energy from the absorption resonance, we extract an EPC matrix element at the CDW wave vector of $M\simeq$ 0.36 eV, which decreases to $M\simeq$ 0.30 eV at high temperature in the absence of the CDW. Our results suggest a feedback mechanism in which the CDW enhances the EPC which, in turn, further stabilizes the CDW.

Coherent control of injection currents in high-quality films of Bi2Se3

Films of the topological insulator Bi2Se3 are grown by molecular beam epitaxy with in-situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction. The films are shown to be high-quality by X-ray reflectivity and diffraction and atomic-force microscopy. Quantum interference control of photocurrents is observed by excitation with harmonically related pulses and detected by terahertz radiation. The injection current obeys the expected excitation irradiance dependence, showing linear dependence on the fundamental pulse irradiance and square-root irradiance dependence of the frequency-doubled optical pulses. The injection current also follows a sinusoidal relative-phase dependence between the two excitation pulses. These results confirm the third-order nonlinear optical origins of the coherently controlled injection current. Experiments are compared to a tight-binding band structure to illustrate the possible optical transitions that occur in creating the injection current.

Demonstration of a neutral atom controlled-NOT quantum gate

We present the first demonstration of a CNOT gate using neutral atoms. Our implementation of the CNOT uses Rydberg blockade interactions between neutral atoms held in optical traps separated by >8 μ\rm m. We measure CNOT fidelities of F=0.73 and 0.72 using two different gate protocols, and show by measurement of parity oscillations that the gate can be used to generate two-atom states with fidelity at the threshold for entanglement. We anticipate that the long range nature of the Rydberg interaction will be attractive for future extensions of this work to multi-qubit systems.

Rabi flopping between ground and Rydberg states with dipole-dipole atomic interactions

We demonstrate Rabi flopping of small numbers of $\rm{^{87}Rb}$ atoms between ground and Rydberg states with $n\le 43$. Coherent population oscillations are observed for single atom flopping, while the presence of two or more atoms decoheres the oscillations. We show that these observations are consistent with van der Waals interactions of Rydberg atoms.

Fast Ground State Manipulation of Neutral Atoms in Microscopic Optical Traps

We demonstrate Rabi flopping at MHz rates between ground hyperfine states of neutral $^{87}$Rb atoms that are trapped in two micron sized optical traps. Using tightly focused laser beams we demonstrate high fidelity, site specific Rabi rotations with crosstalk on neighboring sites separated by $8 μ\rm m$ at the level of $10^{-3}$. Ramsey spectroscopy is used to measure a dephasing time of $870 μ\rm s$ which is $\approx$ 5000 times longer than the time for a $π/2$ pulse.
