Role of Majorana Fermions in high-harmonic generation from Kitaev chain

The observation of Majorana fermions as collective excitations in condensed-matter systems is an ongoing quest, and several state-of-the-art experiments have been performed in the last decade. As a potential avenue in this direction, we simulate the high-harmonic spectrum of Kitaev's superconducting chain model that hosts Majorana edge modes in its topological phase. It is well-known that this system exhibits a topological--trivial superconducting phase transition. We demonstrate that high-harmonic spectroscopy is sensitive to the phase transition in presence of open boundary conditions due to the presence or absence of these edge modes. The population dynamics of the Majorana edge modes are different from the bulk modes, which is the underlying reason for the distinct harmonic profile of both the phases. On the contrary, in presence of periodic boundary conditions with only bulk modes, high-harmonic spectroscopy becomes insensitive to the phase transition with similar harmonic profiles in both phases.

Resummation-based updates for Stochastic Series Expansion Quantum Monte Carlo

For spin rotational symmetric models with a positive-definite high-temperature expansion of the partition function, a stochastic sampling of the series expansion upon partial resummation becomes logically equivalent to sampling an uncoloured closely-packed loop-gas model in one higher dimension. Based on this, we devise quantum Monte Carlo updates that importance-sample loop configurations for general $SU(N)$ in fundamental and higher-symmetric representations. The algorithmic performance systematically improves with increase in (continuous) $N$ allowing efficient simulation of quantum paramagnets. The underlying reason for the increased efficacy is the correspondence of quantum paramagnetic phases like valence bond solids to short-loop phases on the loop-gas side rather than the particular value of $N$. This also gives a connection between Sandvik's $JQ$ model class and classical loop-gas models in the deconfined universality class.

On the topological character of three-dimensional Nexus triple point degeneracies

Recently a generic class of three-dimensional band structures was identified that host two-fold line degeneracies meeting at three-fold or triple point degeneracies, which resist the usual topological characterization of isolated point degeneracies as in Dirac/Weyl semimetals. For these so-called ``Nexus" fermions which lie beyond Dirac/Weyl fermions, we lay out several concepts to characterize the wavefunction geometry and spell out its topology. Our approach is based on an understanding of the analyticity properties of Nexus wavefunctions building on a two-dimensional analogue studied recently by us. We use this to write down a homological classification of various Nexus triple point degeneracies in three dimensions.

Signatures of a spin-1/2 cooperative paramagnet in the diluted triangular lattice of Y$_2$CuTiO$_6$

We present a combination of thermodynamic and dynamic experimental signatures of a disorder driven dynamic cooperative paramagnet in a 50% site diluted triangular lattice spin-1/2 system, Y$_2$CuTiO$_6$. Magnetic ordering and spin freezing are absent down to 50 mK, far below the Curie Weiss scale of ~-134 K. We observe scaling collapses of the magnetic field- and temperature-dependent magnetic heat capacity and magnetisation data, respectively, in conformity with expectations from the random singlet physics. Our experiments establish the suppression of any freezing scale, if at all present, by more than three orders of magnitude, opening a plethora of interesting possibilities such as disorder-stabilized long range quantum entangled ground states.

SU(3) fermions in a three-band Graphene-like model

Two-dimensional Graphene is fascinating because of its unique electronic properties. From a fundamental perspective, one among them is the geometric phase structure near the Dirac points in the Brillouin zone, owing to the SU(2) nature of the Dirac cone wave functions. We ask if there are geometric phase structures in two dimensions which go beyond that of a Dirac cone. Here we write down a family of three-band continuum models of non-interacting fermions which have more intricate geometric phase structures. This is connected to the SU(3) nature of the wavefunctions near three-fold degeneracies. We also give a tight-binding free fermion model on a two-dimensional Graphene-like lattice where the three-fold degeneracies are realized at fine-tuned points. Away from them, we obtain new "three-band" Dirac cone structures with associated non-standard Landau level quantization, whose organization is strongly affected by the non-SU(2) or beyond-Dirac geometric phase structure of the fine-tuned points.

Interaction induced Dirac fermions from quadratic band touching in bilayer graphene

We revisit the effect of local interactions on the quadratic band touching (QBT) of Bernal stacked bilayer graphene models using renormalization group (RG) arguments and quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the Hubbard model. We present an RG argument which predicts, contrary to previous studies, that weak interactions do not flow to strong coupling even if the free dispersion has a QBT. Instead they generate a linear term in the dispersion, which causes the interactions to flow back to weak coupling. Consistent with this RG scenario, in unbiased quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the Hubbard model we find compelling evidence that antiferromagnetism turns on at a finite $U/t$, despite the $U=0$ hopping problem having a QBT. The onset of antiferromagnetism takes place at a continuous transition which is consistent with a dynamical critical exponent $z=1$ as expected for 2+1 d Gross-Neveu criticality. We conclude that generically in models of bilayer graphene, even if the free dispersion has a QBT, small local interactions generate a Dirac phase with no symmetry breaking and that there is a finite-coupling transition out of this phase to a symmetry-broken state.

Sign-problem-free Monte Carlo simulation of certain frustrated quantum magnets

We introduce a Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method which efficiently simulates in a sign-problem-free way a broad class of frustrated $S=1/2$ models with competing antiferromagnetic interactions. Our scheme uses the basis of total spin eigenstates of clusters of spins to avoid the severe sign problem faced by other QMC methods. We also flag important limitations of the new method, and comment on possibilities for further progress.

Transitions to valence-bond solid order in a honeycomb lattice antiferromagnet

We use Quantum Monte-Carlo methods to study the ground state phase diagram of a S=1/2 honeycomb lattice magnet in which a nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic exchange J (favoring Néel order) competes with two different multi-spin interaction terms: a six-spin interaction Q_3 that favors columnar valence-bond solid (VBS) order, and a four-spin interaction Q_2 that favors staggered VBS order. For Q_3 ~ Q_2 >> J, we establish that the competition between the two different VBS orders stabilizes Néel order in a large swathe of the phase diagram even when J is the smallest energy-scale in the Hamiltonian. When Q_3 >> (Q_2,J) (Q_2 >> (Q_3,J)), this model exhibits at zero temperature phase transition from the Néel state to a columnar (staggered) VBS state. We establish that the Néel-columnar VBS transition is continuous for all values of Q_2, and that critical properties along the entire phase boundary are well-characterized by critical exponents and amplitudes of the non-compact CP^1 (NCCP^1) theory of deconfined criticality, similar to what is observed on a square lattice. However, a surprising three-fold anisotropy of the phase of the VBS order parameter at criticality, whose presence was recently noted at the Q_2=0 deconfined critical point, is seen to persist all along this phase boundary. We use a classical analogy to explore this by studying the critical point of a three-dimensional XY model with a four-fold anisotropy field which is known to be weakly irrelevant at the three-dimensional XY critical point. In this case, we again find that the critical anisotropy appears to saturate to a nonzero value over the range of sizes accessible to our simulations.

Boson features in STM spectra of cuprate superconductors: Weak-coupling phenomenology

We derive the shape of the high-energy features due to a weakly coupled boson in cuprate superconductors, as seen experimentally in Bi_2 Sr_2 Ca_1 Cu_2 O_8+x (BSCCO) by Lee et al. [Nature (London) 442, 546 (2006)]. A simplified model is used of d-wave Bogoliubov quasiparticles coupled to Einstein oscillators with a momentum-independent electron-boson coupling and an analytic fitting form is derived, which allows us (a) to extract the boson mode's frequency and (b) to estimate the electron-boson coupling strength. We further calculate the maximum possible superconducting gap due to an Einstein oscillator with the extracted electron-boson coupling strength, which is found to be less than 0.2 times of the observed gap indicating at the observed boson's non-dominant role in the superconductivity's mechanism. The extracted momentum-independent electron-boson coupling parameter (that we show a posteriori to indeed be in the weak-coupling regime) is then to be interpreted as an (band-structure detail dependent weighted) average over the Brillouin zone of the actual momentum-dependent electron-boson coupling in BSCCO.

Emergent Spin Excitations in a Bethe Lattice at Percolation

We study the spin 1/2 quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a Bethe lattice diluted to the percolation threshold. Dilution creates areas of even/odd sublattice imbalance resulting in "dangling spins" (L. Wang and A. W. Sandvik, Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 117204 (2006); Phys. Rev. B 81, 054417 (2010)). These collectively act as "emergent" spin 1/2 degrees of freedom and are responsible for the creation of a set of low lying "quasidegenerate states". Using Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) calculations, we detect the presence and location of these emergent spins. We find an effective Hamiltonian of these emergent spins, with Heisenberg interactions that decay exponentially with the distance between them.

Néel to valence-bond solid transition on the honeycomb lattice: Evidence for deconfined criticality

We study a spin-1/2 SU(2) model on the honeycomb lattice with nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic exchange $J$ that favors Néel order, and competing 6-spin interactions $Q$ which favor a valence bond solid (VBS) state in which the bond-energies order at the "columnar" wavevector ${\mathbf K} = (2π/3,-2π/3)$. We present quantum Monte-Carlo evidence for a direct continuous quantum phase transition between Néel and VBS states, with exponents and logarithmic violations of scaling consistent with those at analogous deconfined critical points on the square lattice. Although this strongly suggests a description in terms of deconfined criticality, the measured three-fold anisotropy of the phase of the VBS order parameter shows unusual near-marginal behaviour at the critical point.

Effect of Dirac Spinons on ARPES signatures of Herbertsmithe

The spinon continues to be an elusive elementary excitation of frustrated antiferromagnets. To solidify evidence for its existence, we address the question of what will be the Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES) signatures of single crystal samples of Herbertsmithite assuming it is described by the Dirac spin liquid state. In particular, we show that the electron spectral function will have a linear in energy dependence near specific wave vectors and that this dependence is expected even after fluctuations to the mean field values are taken into account. Observation of this unique signature in ARPES will provide very strong evidence for the existence of spinons in greater than one dimension.

Extracting Quasiparticle Lifetimes from STM experiments

Based on Quasiparticle Interference(QPI) around a point impurity, we demonstrate an analysis scheme that extracts the lifetime of a quasiparticle by using the Local Density of States(LDOS) data around the impurity in a Scanning Tunneling Microscopy(STM) experiment. This data analysis scheme would augment the Fourier-Transform Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopic method which provides us with the quasiparticle dispersion. Thus, point impurities can be used as probes to extract quasiparticle lifetimes from STM experiments and this would complement other experimental methods such as Angle Resolved Photo-emission Spectrocopy(ARPES). We detail how the scheme would apply to conventional metals/Fermi Liquids and Superconductors.

Echolocation by Quasiparticles

It is shown that the local density of states (LDOS), measured in an Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) experiment, at a single tip position contains oscillations as a function of Energy, due to quasiparticle interference, which is related to the positions of nearby scatterers. We propose a method of STM data analysis based on this idea, which can be used to locate the scatterers. In the case of a superconductor, the method can potentially distinguish the nature of the scattering by a particular impurity.

Spontaneous Currents in Spinless Fermion Lattice Models at the Strong-Coupling Limit

What kind of lattice Hamiltonian manifestly has an ordered state with spontaneous orbital currents? We consider interacting spinless fermions on an array of square plaquettes, connected by weak hopping; the array geometry may be a 2 x 2L ladder, a 2 x 2 x 2L "tube", or a 2L x 2L square grid. At half filling, we derive an effective Hamiltonian in terms of pseudospins, of which one component represents orbital currents, and find the conditions sufficient for orbital current long-range order. We consider spinfull variants of the aforesaid spinless models and make contact with other spinfull models in the literature purported to possess spontaneous currents.
