Electric-Field-Induced Antiferromagnetic Insulating State in a Metallic Ferromagnet

We show that a static electric field induces the transition from a ferromagnetic metal to an antiferromagnetic insulator owing to the Bloch oscillation of conduction electrons. In the steady state, the electric current is inversely proportional to the applied electric field, implying the nonperturbative insulating nature that is different from the Wannier-Stark localization. Possible experimental realization based on recent terahertz pulse sources is discussed.

Strong enhancement of magnetic susceptibility induced by spin-nematic fluctuations in an excitonic insulating system with spin-orbit coupling

Effects of the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and magnetic field on excitonic insulating (EI) states are investigated. We introduce the two-orbital Hubbard model with the crystalline field splitting, which is a minimal model for discussing the exciton condensation in strongly correlated electron systems, and analyze its effective Hamiltonian in the strong correlation limit by using the mean-field theory. In the absence of the SOC and magnetic field, the ground state changes from the nonmagnetic band-insulating state to the EI state by increasing the Hund coupling. In an applied magnetic field, the magnetic moment appears in the EI state, which is continuously connected to the forced ferromagnetic state. On the other hand, in the presence of the SOC, they are separated by a phase boundary. We find that the magnetic susceptibility is strongly enhanced in the EI phase near the boundary with a small SOC. This peculiar behavior is attributed to the low-energy fluctuation of the spin nematicity inherent in the high-spin local state stabilized by the Hund coupling. The present study not only reveals the impact of the SOC for the EI state but also sheds light on the role of quantum fluctuations of the spin nematicity for the EI state.

High-Harmonic Generation in a Correlated Electron System

High-harmonic generation (HHG) in crystalline solids have been examined so far on the basis of one-body energy-band structures arising from electron itineracy in a periodic potential. Here, we show emergence of HHG signals which are attributed to dynamics of many-body states in a low-dimensional correlated electron system. An interacting fermion model and its effective pseudo-spin model on a one-dimensional dimer-type lattice are analyzed. Observed HHG signals in a spontaneously symmetry-broken state, where charge densities are polarized inside of dimer units, show threshold behavior with respect to light amplitude and are interpreted in terms of tunneling and recombination of kink-antikink excitations in an electric field.

Optical Response in Excitonic Insulating State: Variational Cluster Approach

Optical responses in an excitonic insulating (EI) system with strong electron correlation are studied. We adopt the two-orbital Hubbard model with a finite energy difference between the two orbitals where the spin state degree of freedom exists. This model is analyzed by the variational cluster approach. In order to include the local electron correlation effect, the vertex correction is taken into account in the formulation of the optical conductivity spectra. We calculate a finite-temperature phase diagram, in which an EI phase appears between a low-spin band insulating state and a high-spin Mott insulating state. Characteristic components of the optical conductivity spectra consisting of a sharp peak and continuum appear in the EI phase. Integrated intensity almost follows the order parameter of the EI state, suggesting that this component is available to identify the EI phases and transitions.

Magnetic field effects in a correlated electron system with spin-state degree of freedom - Implication of an excitonic insulator -

Magnetic field (H) effects on a correlated electron system with the spin-state degree of freedom are examined. The effective Hamiltonian derived from the two-orbital Hubbard model is analyzed by the mean-field approximation. Applying H to the low-spin (LS) phase induces the excitonic insulating phase, as well as the spin-state ordered phase where the LS and high-spin (HS) states are ordered alternately. In the case where H is applied to the HS phase, a reentrant transition for the HS phase appears. A rich variety of the phase diagrams are attributed to the spin-state degree of freedom and their combinations in the wave function as well as in the real-space configuration.

Phase diagram and collective excitation in excitonic insulator: from the orbital physics viewpoint

Excitonic insulating system is studied from the viewpoints of the orbital physics in strongly correlated electron systems. An effective model Hamiltonian for low-energy electronic states is derived from the two-orbital Hubbard model with a finite energy difference corresponding to the crystalline field splitting. The effective model is represented by the spin operators and the pseudo-spin operators for the spin-state degrees of freedom. The ground state phase diagram is analyzed by the mean-field approximation. In addition to the low-spin state and high-spin state phases, two kinds of the excitonic insulating phases emerge as a consequence of the competition between the crystalline field effect and the Hund coupling. The excitonic transition is classified to be an Ising-like transition reflecting a spontaneous breaking of the $Z_2$ symmetry. Magnetic structures in the two excitonic insulating phases are different from each other; an antiferromagnetic order and a spin nematic order. Collective excitations in each phase are examined by using the generalized spin-wave method. The Goldstone modes in the excitonic insulating phases appear in the dynamical correlation functions for the spins and pseudo-spin operators. Both the transverse and longitudinal spin excitation modes are active in the two excitonic insulating phases in contrast to the low-spin state and high-spin state phases. Connections of the present results to the perovskite cobalt oxides are discussed.

Quantum Melting of Magnetic Order in an Organic Dimer-Mott Insulating System

Quantum entanglement effects between the electronic spin and charge degrees of freedom are examined in an organic molecular solid, termed a dimer-Mott insulating system, in which molecular dimers are arranged in a crystal as fundamental units. A low energy effective model includes an antisymmetric exchange interaction, as one of the dominant magnetic interactions. This interaction favors a 90 degree spin configuration, and competes with the Heisenberg-type exchange interaction. Stabilities of the magnetic ordered phases are examined by using the spin-wave theory, as well as the Schwinger-boson theory. It is found that the spin-charge interaction promotes an instability of the long-range magnetic ordered state around a parameter region where two spin-spiral phases are merged. Implication for the quantum spin liquid state observed in $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$ is discussed.

Magnetoelectric effect in organic molecular solids

The Magnetoelectric (ME) effect in solids is a prominent cross correlation phenomenon, in which the electric field (${\bm E}$) controls the magnetization (${\bm M}$) and the magnetic field (${\bm H}$) controls the electric polarization (${\bm P}$). A rich variety of ME effects and their potential in practical applications have been investigated so far within the transition-metal compounds. Here, we report a possible way to realize the ME effect in organic molecular solids, in which two molecules build a dimer unit aligned on a lattice site. The linear ME effect is predicted in a long-range ordered state of spins and electric dipoles, as well as in a disordered state. One key of the ME effect is a hidden ferroic order of the spin-charge composite object. We provide a new guiding principle of the ME effect in materials without transition-metal elements, which may lead to flexible and lightweight multifunctional materials.

Optical freezing of charge motion in an organic conductor

Dynamical localization, i.e., reduction of the intersite electronic transfer integral t by an alternating electric field, E(omega) , is a promising strategy for controlling strongly correlated systems with a competing energy balance between t and the Coulomb repulsion energy. Here we describe a charge localization induced by the 9.3 MV/cm instantaneous electric field of a 1.5 cycle (7 fs) infrared pulse in an organic conductor alpha-(bis[ethylenedithio]-tetrathiafulvelene)_2I_3. A large reflectivity change of > 25% and a coherent charge oscillation along the time axis reflect the opening of the charge ordering gap in the metallic phase. This optical freezing of charges, which is the reverse of the photoinduced melting of electronic orders, is attributed to the 10% reduction of t driven by the strong, high-frequency (omega>t/h_bar) electric field.

Photo-Induced Phase Transition in Charge Order Systems --Charge Frustration and Interplay with Lattice--

Lattice effects on photo-excited states in interacting charge frustrated system are examined. Real time dynamics in the interacting spinless fermion model on a triangular lattice coupled to lattice vibration are analyzed by applying the exact diagonalization method combined with the classical equation of motion. A photo-induced phase transition from the horizontal stripe-type charge order (CO) to the 3-fold CO occurs through a characteristic intermediate time domain. By analyzing the time evolution in detail, we find that this characteristic dynamics are seen when the electron and lattice sectors are not complementary to each other but show cooperative time evolutions. We also find that there are threshold values in the optical fluorescence and electron-lattice coupling for emergence of the photo-induced 3-fold CO. The dynamics are distinct from those from the vertical stripe-type CO, in which a monotonic CO melting occurs. A scenario of the photo-induced CO phase transition with lattice degree of freedom is presented from a view point of charge frustration.

Photoinduced correlated electron dynamics in a two-leg ladder Hubbard system

Photoinduced carrier dynamics in a correlated electron system on a coupled two-leg ladder lattice are studied. The two-leg ladder Hubbard model is analyzed by utilizing the exact diagonalization method based on the Lanczos algorithm in finite size clusters. In order to reveal the transient carrier dynamics after photoirradiation, we calculate the low-energy components of the hole kinetic energy, the pair-field correlation function, the optical conductivity spectra and others. It is shown that the photoinduced metallic-like state appears in a half filled Mott insulating state, while the low-energy carrier motion is suppressed by photoirradiation in hole doped metallic states. These photoinduced changes in electron dynamics are associated with changes in the carrier-pair coherence, and are not attributed to a naive thermalization but to a ladder-lattice effect. Based on the numerical results, optical controls of hole pairs by using the double-pulse pumping are demonstrated. Implications to the recent optical pump-probe experiments are presented.

Charge Dynamics in a Correlated Fermion System on a Geometrically Frustrated Lattice

Charge dynamics in an interacting fermionic model on a geometrically frustrated lattice are examined. We analyze a spinless fermion model on a paired triangular lattice, an electronic model for layered iron oxides, in zero and finite temperatures by the exact diagonalization methods. We focus on the two charge ordered (CO) phases, termed CO_1/2 and CO_1/3, which, respectively, are realized by the inter-site Coulomb interaction and the quantum/thermal fluctuations. The optical spectra in CO_1/3 show multiple components and their low-energy weights are survived even below the ordering temperature (T_CO). Changes of the dynamical charge correlation below T_CO in CO_1/3 are weakly momentum dependent, in sharply contrast to CO_1/2. These characteristic dynamics in CO_1/3 are attributable to the charge frustration effects, and reproduce some aspects of the recent experimental optical and x-ray scattering spectra.

Photo-Induced Dynamics in Charge-Frustrated Systems

Photo-excited charge dynamics of interacting charge-frustrated systems are studied using a spinless fermion model on an anisotropic triangular lattice. Real-time evolution of the system after irradiating a pump-photon pulse is analyzed by the exact diagonalization method. We focus on photo-excited states in the two canonical charge-ordered (CO) ground states, i.e., horizontal stripe-type and vertical stripe-type COs, which compete with each other owing to the charge frustration. We find that the photo-induced excited states from the two types of COs are distinct. From the horizontal stripe-type CO, a transition to another CO state called the three-fold CO phase occurs. In sharp contrast, the vertical stripe-type CO phase is only weakened by photo-irradiation. Our observations are attributable to the charge frustration effects occurring in the photo-excited states.

Resonating Valence-Bond State in an Orbitally Degenerate Quantum Magnet with Dynamical Jahn-Teller Effect

Short-range resonating-valence bond states in an orbitally degenerate magnet on a honeycomb lattice is studied. A quantum-dimer model is derived from the Hamiltonian which represents the superexchange interaction and the dynamical Jahn-Teller (JT) effect. We introduce two local units termed "spin-orbital singlet dimer", where two spins in a nearest-neighbor bond form a singlet state associated with an orbital polarization along the bond, and "local JT singlet", where an orbital polarization is quenched due to the dynamical JT effect. A derived quantum-dimer model consists of the hopping of the spin-orbital singlet dimers and the JT singlets, and the chemical potential of the JT singlets. We analyze the model by the mean-field approximation, and find that a characteristic phase, termed "JT liquid phase", where both the spin-orbital singlet dimers and the JT singlets move quantum mechanically, is realized. Possible scenarios for the recently observed non magnetic-ordered state in Ba$_3$CuSb$_2$O$_9$ are discussed.

Dynamical Jahn-Teller Effect in Spin-Orbital Coupled System

Dynamical Jahn-Teller (DJT) effect in a spin-orbital coupled system on a honeycomb lattice is examined, motivated from recently observed spin-liquid behavior in Ba$_3$CuSb$_2$O$_9$. An effective vibronic Hamiltonian, where the superexchange interaction and the DJT effect are taken into account, is derived. We find that the DJT effect induces a spin-orbital resonant state where local spin-singlet states and parallel orbital configurations are entangled with each other. This spin-orbital resonant state is realized in between an orbital ordered state, where spin-singlet pairs are localized, and an antiferromagnetic ordered state. Based on the theoretical results, a possible scenario for Ba$_3$CuSb$_2$O$_9$ is proposed.

Optical manipulation of magnetism in spin-charge coupled correlated electron system

Photoirradiation effects in correlated electrons coupled with localized spins are studied based on the extended double-exchange model. In particular, we examine melting of an antiferromagnetic (AFM) charge order insulating state by varying the light intensity. When intense light is irradiated, the AFM insulating characteristics are strengthened, rather than change into the ferromagnetic metallic characteristic, which are expected from the conventional double exchange interaction when carriers are introduced by weak light irradiation or chemical doping. This provides a new principle for optically manipulating magnetism.

Transient Carrier Dynamics in a Mott Insulator with Antiferromagnetic Order

We study transient dynamics of hole carriers injected at a certain time into a Mott insulator with antiferromagnetic long range order. This is termed ``dynamical hole doping" as contrast with chemical hole doping. Theoretical framework for the transient carrier dynamics are presented based on the two dimensional $t-J$ model. Time dependences of the optical conductivity spectra as well as the one-particle excitation spectra are calculated based on the Keldysh Green's function formalism at zero temperature combined with the self-consistent Born approximation. At early stage after dynamical hole doping, the Drude component appears, and then incoherent components originating from hole-magnon scatterings start to grow. Fast oscillatory behavior due to coherent magnon, and slow relaxation dynamics are confirmed in the spectra. Time profiles are interpreted as that doped bare holes are dressed by magnon clouds, and are relaxed into spin polaron quasi-particle states. Characteristic relaxation times for Drude and incoherent peaks strongly depend on momentum of a dynamically doped hole, and the exchange constant. Implications to the recent pump-probe experiments are discussed.

Vibronic Excitation Dynamics in Orbitally Degenerate Correlated Electron System

Orbital-lattice coupled excitation dynamics in orbitally degenerate correlated systems are examined. We present a theoretical framework, where both local vibronic excitations and superexchange-type inter-site interactions are dealt with on an equal footing. We generalize the spin-wave approximation so as to take local vibronic states into account. Present method is valid from weak to strong Jahn-Teller coupling magnitudes. Two characteristic excitation modes coexist; a low-energy dispersive mode and high-energy multi-peak mode. These are identified as a collective vibronic mode, and Flanck-Condon excitations in a single Jahn-Teller center modified by the inter-site interactions, respectively. Present formalism covers vibronic dynamics in several orbital-lattice coupled systems.

Band and Mott Insulators and Superconductivity in Honeycomb-Lattice Ionic-Hubbard Model

Motivated by superconductivity (SC) in layered nitrides, we study an ionic-Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice, which consists of two sublattices with an energy-level offset, by using an optimization variational Monte Carlo method. Parameter values for the Coulomb interaction and the energy-level offset, to realize a band insulator in non-doped state, are evaluated, and the SC state is investigated in a carrier-doped band insulator. It is found that, in a weakly doped band insulator, spin fluctuation remains and the spin-singlet d-wave SC state is realized. Present results support an unconventional spin-singlet SC state suggested by the experimental observations in layered nitrides.

Collective Charge Excitation in a Dimer Mott Insulating System

Charge dynamics in a dimer Mott insulating system, where a non-polar dimer-Mott (DM) phase and a polar charge-ordered (CO) phase compete with each other, are studied. In particular, collective charge excitations are analyzed in the three different models where the internal-degree of freedom in a dimer is taken into account. Collective charge excitation exists both in the non-polar DM phase and the polar CO phase, and softens in the phase boundary. This mode is observable by the optical conductivity spectra where the light polarization is parallel to the electric polarization in the polar CO phase. Connections between the present theory and the recent experimental results in kappa-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu2(CN)3 are discussed.

Ordering and Excitation in Orbital Compass Model on a Checkerboard Lattice

We study an orbital compass model on a checkerboard lattice where orbital degree of freedom is represented by the pseudo-spin operator. Competition arises from an Ising interaction for the $z$ component of pseudo-spins along the vertical/horizontal bonds and an Ising interaction for the $x$ component along diagonal bonds. Classical and quantum compass models are analyzed by utilizing several analytical methods and numerical simulations. At a fully frustrated point where the two Ising interactions compete with each other, a macroscopic number of orbital configurations are degenerate in a classical ground state. This degeneracy is lifted by thermal and quantum fluctuations, and a staggered long-range order of the $z$ component of the pseudo-spin is realized. A tricritical point for this order appears due to competition between the bond dependent Ising interactions. Roles of geometrical frustration on excitation dynamics are also examined.

Photoinduced magnetic bound state in itinerant correlated electron system with spin-state degree of freedom

Photo-excited state in correlated electron system with spin-state degree of freedom is studied. We start from the two-orbital extended Hubbard model where energy difference between the two orbitals is introduced. Photo-excited metastable state is examined based on the effective model Hamiltonian derived by the two-orbital Hubbard model. Spin-state change is induced by photo-irradiation in the low-spin band insulator near the phase boundary. High-spin state is stabilized by creating a ferromagnetic bound state with photo-doped hole carriers. An optical absorption occurs between the bonding and antibonding orbitals inside of the bound state. Time-evolution for photo-excited states is simulated in the time-dependent mean-field scheme. Pair-annihilations of the photo-doped electron and hole generate the high-spin state in a low-spin band insulator. We propose that this process is directly observed by the time-resolved photoemission experiments.

Polar Charge Fluctuation and Superconductivity in Organic Conductor

Superconductivity and polar charge fluctuation are studied in an organic conductor with the dimer-molecule degree of freedom. The extended Hubbard models, where the intra-dimer electronic structure and the inter-dimer Coulomb interactions are taken into account, are analyzed by the random-phase approximation and the fluctuation-exchange approximation. Superconductivity appears in a vicinity of the charge-density wave (CDW) phase where the electronic charge distributions are polarized inside of dimers. The extended s-wave type paring is favored and its competitive relations with the superconductivity due to the spin fluctuation depends on the triangular lattice geometry. Comparison between two superconductivities realized near the polar and non-polar CDW phases are also presented.

Electronic Ferroelectricity in a Dimer Mott Insulator

Motivated from recent experiments in kappa-(BEDT-TTF)_2Cu_2(CN)_3, dielectric and magnetic properties in a dimer-Mott insulator are studied. We derive the effective Hamiltonian where the number of electron per dimer is taken to be one. Charge and magnetic structures in finite temperature are obtained by using the mean-field and Monte-Carlo methods. Magnetic and ferroelectric phases are exclusive with each other. Dielectric fluctuation is remarkable near a phase boundary between dimer-Mott phase and ferroelectric phase. Implications of the present results for kappa-(BEDT-TTF)_2Cu_2(CN)_3 are discussed.

Quantum Dielectric Fluctuation in an Electronic Ferroelectricity studied by Variational Monte-Carlo Method

Electronic structure and dielectric property in an electronic ferroelectricty, where electric polarization is driven by an electronic charge order without inversion symmetry, are studied. Motivated from layered iron oxides, roles of quantum fluctuation on ferroelectricity in a paired-triangular lattice are focused on. Three types of the extended V-t model are examined by the variational Monte-Carlo method with the Gutzwiller-type correlation factor. It is shown that electron transfer between the triangular layers corresponding to the inter-layer polarization fluctuation promotes the three-fold charge order associated with an electric polarization. This result is in highly contrast to the usual manner of quantum fluctuation in the hydrogen-bond type ferroelectricities and the quantum paraelectric oxides. Spin degree of freedom of electron and a realistic crystal structure for the layered iron oxides further stabilize the polar charge ordered state. Implications of the numerical results for layered iron oxides are discussed.

Ring-exchange interaction in doubly degenerate orbital system

Ring-exchange (RE) interaction in Mott insulator with doubly degenerate $e_g$ orbitals is studied. Hamiltonian for the RE interaction is derived by the perturbational calculation. A remarkably weak RE interaction destroys the orbital order caused by the order-by-fluctuation mechanism in the nearest-neighbor exchange-interaction model. A long range order of magnetic octupole moment, i.e. complex orbital wave functions, appears. Competition between octupole and quadrupole interactions strongly suppresses ordered moments.

Electronic Ferroelectricity and Frustration

Beyond a conventional classification of ferroelectricity, there is a class of materials where electronic degrees of freedom and electronic interactions are directly responsible for electric polarization and ferroelectric transition. This is termed electronic ferroelectricity. In this article, we review electronic ferroelectricity from a view point of frustration. Experimental and theoretical examinations in spin driven ferroelectric materials, recently termed multiferroics, are introduced. Spin frustration caused by competing magnetic interactions is of prime importance for this type of ferroelectricity. Charge driven ferroelectricity where electronic charge order induces electric polarization is reviewed. In particular, exotic dielectric and magneto-dielectric properties in layered iron oxides are focused on. Through a number of recent experimental and theoretical researches, charge fluctuation due to frustrated geometry plays essential roles on electronic ferroelectricity in this compound.

Quantum fluctuation and geometrical frustration effects on electric polarization

We examine theoretically a possibility of ferroelectricity caused by electronic charge order without inversion symmetry, motivated by layered iron oxides. Quantum electronic models in a paired-triangular lattice are analyzed by utilizing the variational Monte Carlo simulation. Our calculation demonstrates that combined effects of electron transfer between the layers, corresponding to quantum fluctuation between the potential minima, and geometrical frustration promote appearance of an electric polarization. Present results are in contrast to the conventional manner of quantum fluctuation in ferroelectricity.

Spin-state transition and phase separation in multi-orbital Hubbard model

We study spin-state transition and phase separation involving this transition based on the milti-orbital Hubbard model. Multiple spin states are realized by changing the energy separation between the two orbitals and the on-site Hund coupling. By utilizing the variational Monte-Carlo simulation, we analyze the electronic and magnetic structures in hole doped and undoped states. Electronic phase separation occurs between the low-spin band insulating state and the high-spin ferromagnetic metallic one. Difference of the band widths in the two orbitals is of prime importance for the spin-state transition and the phase separation.

Phase Diagram in R_{1-x}A_xMnO_3

We study the phase diagram of R_{1-x}A_xMnO_3 (R=La, Pr, Nd, Sm ; A=Ca, Sr, Ba) by taking into account the degeneracy of $e_g$ orbitals and the anisotropy of the transfer integral. The electron-electron interaction is treated in the mean field approximation with the optimization of the spin and orbital structures. The global phase diagram is understood in terms of the two interactions, i.e., the super exchange interaction for small $x$ and the double exchange interaction for larger $x$ modified by the orbital degeneracy. The dimensionality of the electronic energy band resulting from the orbital structure is essential to determine the phase diagram. The effects of the Jahn-Teller distortion are also studied.
