Feasibility of Kitaev quantum spin liquids in ultracold polar molecules

Ultracold atoms and molecules trapped in optical lattices are expected to serve as simulators of strongly correlated systems and topological states of matter. A fascinating example is to realize the Kitaev quantum spin liquid by using ultracold polar molecules. However, although experimental implementation of the Kitaev-type interaction was proposed, the stability of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid has not been fully investigated thus far. Here we study a quantum spin model with long-range angle-dependent Kitaev-type interactions proposed for the polar molecules, by the pseudofermion functional renormalization group method. We reveal that the ground state is magnetically ordered in both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic models regardless of the spatial anisotropy of the interactions, while the isotropic case is most frustrated and closest to the realization of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid. Furthermore, by introducing a cutoff in the interaction range, we clarify how the Kitaev quantum spin liquid is destroyed by the long-range interactions. The results urge us to reconsider the feasibility of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid in ultracold polar molecules.

Scattering phenomena for spin transport in Kitaev spin liquid

The Kitaev model exhibits a canonical quantum spin liquid as a ground state and hosts two fractional quasiparticles, itinerant Majorana fermion and localized flux excitation. The former can carry heat and spin modulations in the quantum spin liquid, but the role of the latter remains unknown for the transport phenomena. Here, we focus on spin transport in the presence of excited fluxes and report that they yield strong interference in the propagation of the Majorana fermions, which feel gauge-like potential emergent around the fluxes. We examine the transient spin dynamics triggered by a pulsed magnetic field at an edge. In the absence of excited fluxes, the magnetic-field pulse creates the plane wave of the Majorana fermions, which flows in the quantum spin liquid. Although this wave does not accompany the change of local spin moments in bulk, it induces local moments at the side opposite to the edge under the magnetic-field pulse. We observe the spatial modulation of induced spin moments when fluxes are excited in the bulk region. This behavior is more striking than the case of lattice defects. Moreover, we find that, although the amplitude of the spatial change is almost independent of the distance between lattice defects, it is strongly enhanced by increasing the distance for the case of excited fluxes. The difference is understood from the influence on the itinerant Majorana fermions; the lattice defects change the system locally, but flux excitations alter all the transfer integrals on the string connecting them. The present results will provide another route to observing intrinsic flux excitations distinguished from extrinsic effects such as lattice defects.

Antisymmetric Thermopolarization by Electric Toroidicity

We investigate electric polarizations emergent perpendicular to an applied thermal gradient in insulating systems. The thermally-induced electric polarization, known as thermopolarization, has been studied conventionally in the case that an electric polarization appears along the thermal gradient. Here, we focus on the antisymmetric component of the thermopolarization tensor and reveal that it becomes nonzero owing to the ferro-type order for electric-toroidal dipole moments. To describe local electric polarizations originating from the disproportionation of localized electronic clouds, we introduce a two-dimensional three-orbital model with localized $s$ and two $p$ orbitals, where the electric polarization at each site interacts with the neighboring one as dipole-dipole interactions. We find that a vortex-type configuration of local electric polarizations appears as a mean-field ground state, corresponding to a ferro-type electric-toroidal dipole order. By taking account of collective modes from this ordered state, we calculate the coefficient of the thermopolarization based on the linear response theory. The antisymmetric component is nonzero in the presence of the electric-toroidal dipole order. We clarify that fluctuations in the $p$ orbitals are crucial in enhancing the antisymmetric thermopolarization. We discuss the appearance conditions based on the symmetry argument and the relevance to real materials.

Majorana-Magnon Crossover by a Magnetic Field in the Kitaev Model: Continuous-Time Quantum Monte Carlo Study

Kitaev quantum spin liquids host Majorana fermions via the fractionalization of spins. In a magnetic field, the Majorana fermions were predicted to comprise a topological state, which has attracted great attention by the discovery of the half-quantized thermal Hall conductivity. Nevertheless, a reliable theory remains elusive for the field effect, especially at finite temperature. Here we present unbiased large-scale numerical results for the Kitaev model in a wide range of magnetic field and temperature. We find that the unconventional paramagnetic region showing fractional spin dynamics extends at finite temperature, far beyond the field range where the topological state is expected at zero temperature. Our results show the confinement-deconfinement behavior between the fractional Majorana excitations and the conventional magnons.

Spin Seebeck Effect in Nonmagnetic Excitonic Insulators

We propose a mechanism of the spin Seebeck effect attributed to excitonic condensation in a nonmagnetic insulator. We analyze a half-filled two-orbital Hubbard model with a crystalline field splitting in the strong coupling limit. In this model, the competition between the crystalline field and electron correlations brings about an excitonic insulating state, where the two orbitals are spontaneously hybridized. Using the generalized spin-wave theory and Boltzmann transport equation, we find that a spin current generated by a thermal gradient is observed in the excitonic insulating state without magnetic fields. The spin Seebeck effect originates from spin-split collective excitation modes although the ground state does not exhibit any magnetic orderings. This peculiar phenomenon is inherent in the excitonic insulating state, whose order parameter is time-reversal odd and yields a spin splitting for the collective excitation modes. We also find that the spin current is strongly enhanced and its direction is inverted in the vicinity of the phase transition to another magnetically ordered phase. We suggest that the present phenomenon is possibly observed in perovskite cobaltites with the GdFeO$_3$-type lattice distortion.

Spin transport in the Quantum Spin Liquid State in the $S=1$ Kitaev model: role of the fractionalized quasiparticles

We investigate the real-time spin response of the $S=1$ Kitaev model upon stimuli of a pulsed magnetic field in one of the edges using the exact diagonalization method. It is found that the pulsed magnetic field has no effect on the appearance of the spin moments in the quantum spin liquid region, but induces the spin oscillations in the other edge region with a small magnetic field. This is understood by the existence of the itinerant quasiparticles, which carry the spin excitations without the spin polarization in the quantum spin liquid state. This suggests that the spin fractionalizations occur in the $S=1$ Kitaev model as well as the exactly solvable $S=1/2$ Kitaev one and the fractionalized quasiparticles play an essential role in the spin transport.

Strong enhancement of magnetic susceptibility induced by spin-nematic fluctuations in an excitonic insulating system with spin-orbit coupling

Effects of the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and magnetic field on excitonic insulating (EI) states are investigated. We introduce the two-orbital Hubbard model with the crystalline field splitting, which is a minimal model for discussing the exciton condensation in strongly correlated electron systems, and analyze its effective Hamiltonian in the strong correlation limit by using the mean-field theory. In the absence of the SOC and magnetic field, the ground state changes from the nonmagnetic band-insulating state to the EI state by increasing the Hund coupling. In an applied magnetic field, the magnetic moment appears in the EI state, which is continuously connected to the forced ferromagnetic state. On the other hand, in the presence of the SOC, they are separated by a phase boundary. We find that the magnetic susceptibility is strongly enhanced in the EI phase near the boundary with a small SOC. This peculiar behavior is attributed to the low-energy fluctuation of the spin nematicity inherent in the high-spin local state stabilized by the Hund coupling. The present study not only reveals the impact of the SOC for the EI state but also sheds light on the role of quantum fluctuations of the spin nematicity for the EI state.

The range of non-Kitaev terms and fractional particles in RuCl$_3$

Significant efforts have focused on the magnetic excitations of relativistic Mott insulators, predicted to realize the Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL). This exactly solvable model involves a highly entangled state resulting from bond-dependent Ising interactions that produce excitations which are non-local in terms of spin flips. A key challenge in real materials is identifying the relative size of the non-Kitaev terms and their role in the emergence or suppression of fractional excitations. Here, we identify the energy and temperature boundaries of non-Kitaev interactions by direct comparison of the Raman susceptibility of RuCl3 with quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) results for the Kitaev QSLs. Moreover, we further confirm the fractional nature of the magnetic excitations, which is given by creating a pair of fermionic quasiparticles. Interestingly, this fermionic response remains valid in the non-Kitaev range. Our results and focus on the use of the Raman susceptibility provide a stringent new test for future theoretical and experimental studies of QSLs.

Thermodynamic and Transport Properties in Disordered Kitaev Models

Effects of bond randomness and site dilution are systematically investigated for the Kitaev model describing a quantum spin liquid with fractional excitations of itinerant Majorana fermions and localized fluxes. We find that, in the high-temperature region where the itinerant Majorana fermions release their entropy, both types of disorders suppress the longitudinal thermal conductivity while keeping the specific heat almost unchanged. This suggests that both disorders reduce the mean-free path of the Majorana fermions. On the other hand, in the low-temperature region, the other specific heat peak associated with the entropy release from the localized fluxes is suppressed for both cases, but it is broadened and shifted to the lower-temperature side by the bond randomness, while the position and the width are almost unchanged against the site dilution. Contrasting behavior is also found in the thermal Hall effect under a magnetic field; the half quantization of the thermal Hall conductivity is fragile against the site dilution, while it remains for the bond randomness despite the reduced onset temperature. We discuss the contrasting behavior from the stability of the topological nature by calculating flux condensation and Majorana excitation gap.

Magnetic properties of the S = 1 Kitaev model with anisotropic interactions

We investigate magnetic properties in the $S=1$ Kitaev model in the anisotropic limit. Performing the fourth-order perturbation expansion with respect to the $x$-bonds, $y$-bonds, and magnetic field, we derive the effective Hamiltonian, where the low-energy physics should be described by the free spins with an effective magnetic field. Making use of the exact diagonalization method for small clusters, we discuss ground-state properties in the system complementary.

Majorana-mediated spin transport without spin polarization in Kitaev quantum spin liquids

We study the spin transport through the quantum spin liquid (QSL) by investigating the real-time and real-space dynamics of the Kitaev spin system with a zigzag structure in terms of the time-dependent Majorana mean-field theory. After the magnetic field pulse is introduced to one of the edges, the spin moments are excited in the opposite edge region although no spin moments are induced in the Kitaev QSL region. This unusual spin transport originates from the fact that the $S=1/2$ spins are fractionalized into the itinerant and localized Majorana fermions in the Kitaev system. Although both Majorana fermions are excited by the magnetic pulse, only the itinerant Majorana fermions flow through the bulk regime without the spin excitation, resulting in the spin transport in the Kitaev system. We also demonstrate that this phenomenon can be observed even in the system with the Heisenberg interactions using the exact diagonalization.

Fractional Spin Fluctuation as a Precursor of Quantum Spin Liquids: Majorana Dynamical Mean-Field Study for the Kitaev Model

Experimental identification of quantum spin liquids remains a challenge, as the pristine nature is to be seen in asymptotically low temperatures. We here theoretically show that the precursor of quantum spin liquids appears in the spin dynamics in the paramagnetic state over a wide temperature range. Using the cluster dynamical mean-field theory and the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method, which are newly developed in the Majorana fermion representation, we calculate the dynamical spin structure factor, relaxation rate in nuclear magnetic resonance, and magnetic susceptibility for the honeycomb Kitaev model whose ground state is a canonical example of the quantum spin liquid. We find that dynamical spin correlations show peculiar temperature and frequency dependence even below the temperature where static correlations saturate. The results provide the experimentally-accessible symptoms of the fluctuating fractionalized spins evincing the quantum spin liquids.

Magnetic field effects in a correlated electron system with spin-state degree of freedom - Implication of an excitonic insulator -

Magnetic field (H) effects on a correlated electron system with the spin-state degree of freedom are examined. The effective Hamiltonian derived from the two-orbital Hubbard model is analyzed by the mean-field approximation. Applying H to the low-spin (LS) phase induces the excitonic insulating phase, as well as the spin-state ordered phase where the LS and high-spin (HS) states are ordered alternately. In the case where H is applied to the HS phase, a reentrant transition for the HS phase appears. A rich variety of the phase diagrams are attributed to the spin-state degree of freedom and their combinations in the wave function as well as in the real-space configuration.

Phase diagram and collective excitation in excitonic insulator: from the orbital physics viewpoint

Excitonic insulating system is studied from the viewpoints of the orbital physics in strongly correlated electron systems. An effective model Hamiltonian for low-energy electronic states is derived from the two-orbital Hubbard model with a finite energy difference corresponding to the crystalline field splitting. The effective model is represented by the spin operators and the pseudo-spin operators for the spin-state degrees of freedom. The ground state phase diagram is analyzed by the mean-field approximation. In addition to the low-spin state and high-spin state phases, two kinds of the excitonic insulating phases emerge as a consequence of the competition between the crystalline field effect and the Hund coupling. The excitonic transition is classified to be an Ising-like transition reflecting a spontaneous breaking of the $Z_2$ symmetry. Magnetic structures in the two excitonic insulating phases are different from each other; an antiferromagnetic order and a spin nematic order. Collective excitations in each phase are examined by using the generalized spin-wave method. The Goldstone modes in the excitonic insulating phases appear in the dynamical correlation functions for the spins and pseudo-spin operators. Both the transverse and longitudinal spin excitation modes are active in the two excitonic insulating phases in contrast to the low-spin state and high-spin state phases. Connections of the present results to the perovskite cobalt oxides are discussed.

Phase transitions in the Hubbard model for the bismuth nickelate

We study low temperature properties of the Hubbard model for the bismuth nickelate, where degenerate orbitals in the nickel ions and a single orbital in the bismuth ions are taken into account, combining dynamical mean-field theory with the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method. We discuss the effect of the attractive interactions to mimic the valence skipping phenomenon in the bismuth ions. We demonstrate how the charge and magnetically ordered states are stable against thermal fluctuations. It is furthermore clarified that the ferromagnetically ordered and orbital ordered states are stabilized due to the presence of the orbital degeneracy at low temperatures. The crossover between metallic and insulating states is also discussed.

Valence Fluctuations in the Extended Anderson Lattice Model with Quasiperiodicity

We study valence fluctuations in the extended Anderson model on two-dimensional Penrose lattice, using the real-space dynamical mean-field theory combined with the continuous-time Monte Carlo method. Calculating $f$-electron number, $c$-$f$ spin correlations, and magnetic susceptibility at each site, we find site-dependent formations of the singlet state and valence distribution at low temperatures, which are reflected by the quasiperiodic lattice structure. The bulk magnetic susceptibility is also addressed.

DMFT Study for Valence Fluctuations in the Extended Periodic Anderson Model

We study valence fluctuations at finite temperatures in the extended periodic Anderson model, where the Coulomb interaction between conduction and localized $f$-electrons is taken into account, using dynamical mean-field theory combined with the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo (CT-QMC) method. The valence transition with the hysteresis is clearly found, indicating the first-order phase transition between the Kondo and mixed-valence states. We demonstrate that spin correlation rapidly develops when the system approaches the valence transition point. The comparison of the impurity solvers, %: the CT-QMC, non-crossing approximation, and one-crossing approximation, is also addressed.

Magnetic three states of matter: A quantum Monte Carlo study of spin liquids

We present thermodynamic phase diagrams showing magnetic analog of "three states of matter," namely, spin liquid, paramagnetic, and magnetically ordered phases, obtained by unbiased quantum Monte Carlo simulations. Our simulations are carried out for Kitaev's toric codes in two and three dimensions, i.e., the simplest realizations of gapped topological $Z_2$ spin liquids, extended by a nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic Ising coupling. We find that the ordered phase borders on the spin liquid by a discontinuous transition line in three dimensions, while it grows continuously from the quantum critical point in two dimensions. In both cases, our results elucidate peculiar proximity effects to the nearby spin liquids in the high-temperature paramagnetic phase, even when the ground state is magnetically ordered. The thorough study of magnetic three states of matter is achieved by introducing the "fictitious vertex" method into the directed loop algorithm. This provides a generic prescription to simulate models with off-diagonal multispin interactions, in which the conventional scheme may suffer from intrinsic ergodicity breakdown as in the present case.

Phase Diagram of the Kitaev-type Model on a Decorated Honeycomb Lattice in the Isolated Dimer Limit

An effective model in the isolated dimer limit of the Kitaev-type model on a decorated honeycomb lattice is investigated at finite temperature. The ground state of this model is exactly shown to be a chiral spin liquid with spontaneous breaking of time reversal symmetry. We elaborate the finite-temperature phase diagram by using the mean-field approximation and Monte Carlo simulation. We find that the phase transition between the high-temperature paramagnetic phase and the low-temperature chiral spin liquid phase is always of second order in the Monte Carlo results, although a tricritical point appears in the mean-field phase diagram. The finite-size scaling analysis of the Monte Carlo data indicates that the phase transition belongs to the two-dimensional Ising universality class.

Spin correlation and Majorana spectrum in chiral spin liquids in a decorated-honeycomb Kitaev model

Temperature evolution of the spin correlation and excitation spectrum is investigated for a Kitaev model defined on a decorated honeycomb lattice by using the quantum Monte Carlo simulation in the Majorana fermion representation. The ground state of this quantum spin model is given by two kinds of chiral spin liquids: one is topologically trivial with Abelian anyon excitations, and the other is topologically nontrivial with non-Abelian anyon excitations. While lowering temperature, the model exhibits several crossovers in the paramagnetic state, which originate from the fractionalization of quantum spins into Majorana fermions, in addition to a phase transition associated with time reversal symmetry breaking. We show that the spin correlation develops around the crossover temperatures, whereas it shows a slight change at the critical temperature, as in other Kitaev-type models. We also calculate the excitation spectrum in terms of Majorana fermions, and find that the excitation gap in the non-Abelian phase is fragile against thermal fluctuations of the $Z_2$ fluxes, while that in the Abelian phase remains open.

Thermal fractionalization of quantum spins in a Kitaev model: $T$-linear specific heat and coherent transport of Majorana fermions

Finite-temperature ($T$) properties of a Kitaev model defined on a honeycomb lattice are investigated by a quantum Monte Carlo simulation, from the viewpoint of fractionalization of quantum $S=1/2$ spins into two types of Majorana fermions, itinerant and localized. In this system, the entropy is released successively at two well-separated $T$ scales, as a clear indication of the thermal fractionalization. We show that the high-$T$ crossover, which is driven by itinerant Majorana fermions, is closely related with the development of nearest-neighbor spin correlations. On the other hand, the low-$T$ crossover originates in thermal fluctuations of fluxes composed of localized Majorana fermions, by which the spectrum of itinerant Majorana fermions is significantly disturbed. As a consequence, in the intermediate-$T$ range between the two crossovers, the system exhibits $T$-linear behavior in the specific heat and coherent transport of Majorana fermions, which are unexpected for the Dirac semimetallic spectrum in the low-$T$ limit. We also show that the flux fluctuations tend to open an energy gap in the Majorana spectrum near the gapless-gapped phase boundary. Our results indicate that the fractionalization is experimentally observable in the specific heat, spin correlations, and transport properties.

Thermodynamics of Chiral Spin Liquids with Abelian and Non-Abelian Anyons

Thermodynamic properties of chiral spin liquids are investigated for a variant of the Kitaev model defined on a decorated honeycomb lattice. Using the quantum Monte Carlo simulation, we find that the model exhibits a finite-temperature phase transition associated with the time reversal symmetry breaking, in both topologically trivial and nontrivial regions. While changing the exchange constants, the phase transition changes from continuous to discontinuous one, apparently correlated with the change in the excitations from Abelian to non-Abelian anyons. We show this coincidence by computing the topological quantities: the Chern number and the thermal Hall conductivity. In addition, we find, as a diagnostic of the chiral spin liquids, successive crossovers with multi-stage entropy release above the critical temperature, which indicates that the hierarchical fractionalization of a quantum spin occurs differently between the two regions.

Low-energy Majorana states in spin-liquid transitions in a three-dimensional Kitaev model

A three-dimensional Kitaev model on a hyperhoneycomb lattice is investigated numerically at finite temperature. The Kitaev model is one of the solvable quantum spin models, where the ground state is given by gapped and gapless spin liquids, depending on the anisotropy of the interactions. This model can be rewritten as a free Majorana fermion system coupled with $Z_2$ variables. The density of states of Majorana fermions shows an excitation gap in the gapped region, while it is semimetallic in the gapless region reflecting the Dirac node. Performing the Monte Carlo simulation, we calculate the temperature dependence of the Majorana spectra. We find that the semimetallic dip is filled up as temperature increases in the gapless region, but surprisingly, the spectrum develops an excitation gap in the region near the gapless-gapped boundary. Such changes of the low-energy spectrum appear sharply at the transition temperature from the spin liquid to the paramagnetic state. The results indicate that thermal fluctuations of the $Z_2$ fields significantly influence the low-energy state of Majorana fermions, especially in the spin liquid formation.

Resonating Valence-Bond State in an Orbitally Degenerate Quantum Magnet with Dynamical Jahn-Teller Effect

Short-range resonating-valence bond states in an orbitally degenerate magnet on a honeycomb lattice is studied. A quantum-dimer model is derived from the Hamiltonian which represents the superexchange interaction and the dynamical Jahn-Teller (JT) effect. We introduce two local units termed "spin-orbital singlet dimer", where two spins in a nearest-neighbor bond form a singlet state associated with an orbital polarization along the bond, and "local JT singlet", where an orbital polarization is quenched due to the dynamical JT effect. A derived quantum-dimer model consists of the hopping of the spin-orbital singlet dimers and the JT singlets, and the chemical potential of the JT singlets. We analyze the model by the mean-field approximation, and find that a characteristic phase, termed "JT liquid phase", where both the spin-orbital singlet dimers and the JT singlets move quantum mechanically, is realized. Possible scenarios for the recently observed non magnetic-ordered state in Ba$_3$CuSb$_2$O$_9$ are discussed.

Spin-orbit coupling in octamers in a spinel sulfide CuIr$_2$S$_4$: Competition between spin-singlet and quadrupolar states, and its relevance to remnant paramagnetism

We theoretically investigate magnetic properties in the low-temperature phase with the formation of eight-site clusters, octamers, in the spinel compound CuIr$_2$S$_4$. The octamer state was considered to be a spin-singlet state induced by a Peieirls instability through the strong anisotropy of $d$ orbitals, the so-called orbital Peierls state. We reexamine this picture by taking into account the spin-orbit coupling which was ignored in the previous study. We derive a low-energy effective model between $j_{\rm eff}=1/2$ quasispins on Ir$^{4+}$ cations in an octamer from the multiorbital Hubbard model with the strong spin-orbit coupling by performing the perturbation expansion from the strong correlation limit. The effective Hamiltonian is in the form of the Kitaev-Heisenberg model but with an additional interaction, a symmetric off-diagonal exchange interaction originating from the perturbation process including both d-d and d-p-d hopping. Analyzing the effective Hamiltonian on two sites and the octamer by the exact diagonalization, we find that there is a competition between a spin-singlet state and a quadrupolar state. The former singlet state is a conventional one, adiabatically connected to the orbital-Peierls state. On the other hand, the latter quadrupolar state is stabilized by the additional interaction, which consists of a linear combination of different total spin momenta along the spin quantization axis. In the competing region, the model exhibits paramagnetic behavior with a renormalized small effective moment at low temperature. This peculiar remnant paramagnetism is not obtained in the Kitaev-Heisenberg model without the additional interaction. Our results renew the picture of the octamer state and provide a scenario for the intrinsic paramagnetic behavior recently observed in a muon spin rotation experiment [K. M. Kojima et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 087203 (2014)].

Vaporization of Kitaev spin liquids

Quantum spin liquid is an exotic quantum state of matter in magnets. This state is a spin analogue of the liquid helium which does not solidify down to the lowest temperature due to strong quantum fluctuations. In conventional fluids, liquid and gas possess the same symmetry and adiabatically connect to each other by bypassing the critical end point. We find that the situation is qualitatively different in quantum spin liquids realizing in a three-dimensional Kitaev model; both gapless and gapped quantum spin liquid phases at low temperatures are always distinguished from the high-temperature paramagnet (spin gas) by a phase transition. The results challenge common belief that the absence of thermodynamic singularity down to the lowest temperature is a symptom of a quantum spin liquid.

Dynamical Jahn-Teller Effect in Spin-Orbital Coupled System

Dynamical Jahn-Teller (DJT) effect in a spin-orbital coupled system on a honeycomb lattice is examined, motivated from recently observed spin-liquid behavior in Ba$_3$CuSb$_2$O$_9$. An effective vibronic Hamiltonian, where the superexchange interaction and the DJT effect are taken into account, is derived. We find that the DJT effect induces a spin-orbital resonant state where local spin-singlet states and parallel orbital configurations are entangled with each other. This spin-orbital resonant state is realized in between an orbital ordered state, where spin-singlet pairs are localized, and an antiferromagnetic ordered state. Based on the theoretical results, a possible scenario for Ba$_3$CuSb$_2$O$_9$ is proposed.

Vibronic Excitation Dynamics in Orbitally Degenerate Correlated Electron System

Orbital-lattice coupled excitation dynamics in orbitally degenerate correlated systems are examined. We present a theoretical framework, where both local vibronic excitations and superexchange-type inter-site interactions are dealt with on an equal footing. We generalize the spin-wave approximation so as to take local vibronic states into account. Present method is valid from weak to strong Jahn-Teller coupling magnitudes. Two characteristic excitation modes coexist; a low-energy dispersive mode and high-energy multi-peak mode. These are identified as a collective vibronic mode, and Flanck-Condon excitations in a single Jahn-Teller center modified by the inter-site interactions, respectively. Present formalism covers vibronic dynamics in several orbital-lattice coupled systems.

Ordering and Excitation in Orbital Compass Model on a Checkerboard Lattice

We study an orbital compass model on a checkerboard lattice where orbital degree of freedom is represented by the pseudo-spin operator. Competition arises from an Ising interaction for the $z$ component of pseudo-spins along the vertical/horizontal bonds and an Ising interaction for the $x$ component along diagonal bonds. Classical and quantum compass models are analyzed by utilizing several analytical methods and numerical simulations. At a fully frustrated point where the two Ising interactions compete with each other, a macroscopic number of orbital configurations are degenerate in a classical ground state. This degeneracy is lifted by thermal and quantum fluctuations, and a staggered long-range order of the $z$ component of the pseudo-spin is realized. A tricritical point for this order appears due to competition between the bond dependent Ising interactions. Roles of geometrical frustration on excitation dynamics are also examined.

Polar Charge Fluctuation and Superconductivity in Organic Conductor

Superconductivity and polar charge fluctuation are studied in an organic conductor with the dimer-molecule degree of freedom. The extended Hubbard models, where the intra-dimer electronic structure and the inter-dimer Coulomb interactions are taken into account, are analyzed by the random-phase approximation and the fluctuation-exchange approximation. Superconductivity appears in a vicinity of the charge-density wave (CDW) phase where the electronic charge distributions are polarized inside of dimers. The extended s-wave type paring is favored and its competitive relations with the superconductivity due to the spin fluctuation depends on the triangular lattice geometry. Comparison between two superconductivities realized near the polar and non-polar CDW phases are also presented.

Ring-exchange interaction in doubly degenerate orbital system

Ring-exchange (RE) interaction in Mott insulator with doubly degenerate $e_g$ orbitals is studied. Hamiltonian for the RE interaction is derived by the perturbational calculation. A remarkably weak RE interaction destroys the orbital order caused by the order-by-fluctuation mechanism in the nearest-neighbor exchange-interaction model. A long range order of magnetic octupole moment, i.e. complex orbital wave functions, appears. Competition between octupole and quadrupole interactions strongly suppresses ordered moments.
