A generalization of Rasmussen's invariant, with applications to surfaces in some four-manifolds

We extend the definition of Khovanov-Lee homology to links in connected sums of $S^1 \times S^2$'s, and construct a Rasmussen-type invariant for null-homologous links in these manifolds. For certain links in $S^1 \times S^2$, we compute the invariant by reinterpreting it in terms of Hochschild homology. As applications, we prove inequalities relating the Rasmussen-type invariant to the genus of surfaces with boundary in the following four-manifolds: $B^2 \times S^2$, $S^1 \times B^3$, $\mathbb{CP}^2$, and various connected sums and boundary sums of these. We deduce that Rasmussen's invariant also gives genus bounds for surfaces inside homotopy 4-balls obtained from $B^4$ by Gluck twists. Therefore, it cannot be used to prove that such homotopy 4-balls are non-standard.

Murasugi sum and extremal knot Floer homology

The aim of this paper is to study the behavior of knot Floer homology under Murasugi sum. We establish a graded version of Ni's isomorphism between the extremal knot Floer homology of Murasugi sum of two links and the tensor product of the extremal knot Floer homology groups of the two summands. We further prove that $τ=g$ for each summand if and only if $τ=g$ holds for the Murasugi sum (with $τ$ and $g$ defined appropriately for multi-component links). Some applications are presented.

A refinement of Rasmussen's s-invariant

In a previous paper we constructed a spectrum-level refinement of Khovanov homology. This refinement induces stable cohomology operations on Khovanov homology. In this paper we show that these cohomology operations commute with cobordism maps on Khovanov homology. As a consequence we obtain a refinement of Rasmussen's slice genus bound s for each stable cohomology operation. We show that in the case of the Steenrod square Sq^2 our refinement is strictly stronger than s.

A note on sign conventions in link Floer homology

For knots in S^3, the bi-graded hat version of knot Floer homology is defined over Z; however, for a link L in S^3 with #|L|=l>1, there are 2^{l-1} bi-graded hat versions of link Floer homology defined over Z, the multi-graded hat version of link Floer homology is only defined over F_2 from holomorphic considerations, and there is a multi-graded version of link Floer homology defined over Z using grid diagrams. In this short note, we try to address this issue, by extending the F_2-valued multi-graded link Floer homology theory to 2^{l-1} Z-valued theories. A grid diagram representing a link gives rise to a chain complex over F_2, whose homology is related to the multi-graded hat version of link Floer homology of that link over F_2. A sign refinement of the chain complex exists, and for knots, we establish that the sign refinement does indeed correspond to the sign assignment for the hat version of the knot Floer homology. For links, we create 2^{l-1} sign assignments on the grid diagrams, and show that they are related to the 2^{l-1} multi-graded hat versions of link Floer homology over Z, and one of them corresponds to the existing sign refinement of the grid chain complex.

Moving basepoints and the induced automorphisms of link Floer homology

Given an l-component pointed oriented link (L,p) in an oriented three-manifold Y, one can construct its link Floer chain complex CFL(Y,L,p) over the polynomial ring F_2[U_1,...,U_l]. Moving the basepoint p_i in the link component L_i once around induces an automorphism of CFL(Y,L,p). In this paper, we study an automorphism (a possibly different one) of CFL(Y,L,p) defined explicitly in terms of holomorphic disks; for links in S^3, we show that these two automorphisms are the same.

Grid diagrams and shellability

We explore a somewhat unexpected connection between knot Floer homology and shellable posets, via grid diagrams. Given a grid presentation of a knot K inside S^3, we define a poset which has an associated chain complex whose homology is the knot Floer homology of K. We then prove that the closed intervals of this poset are shellable. This allows us to combinatorially associate a PL flow category to a grid diagram.

On sutured Floer homology and the equivalence of Seifert surfaces

We study the sutured Floer homology invariants of the sutured manifold obtained by cutting a knot complement along a Seifert surface, R. We show that these invariants are finer than the "top term" of the knot Floer homology, which they contain. In particular, we use sutured Floer homology to distinguish two non-isotopic minimal genus Seifert surfaces for the knot 8_3. A key ingredient for this technique is finding appropriate Heegaard diagrams for the sutured manifold associated to the complement of a Seifert surface.
