Control of eigenfunctions on surfaces of variable curvature

We prove a microlocal lower bound on the mass of high energy eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on compact surfaces of negative curvature, and more generally on surfaces with Anosov geodesic flows. This implies controllability for the Schrödinger equation by any nonempty open set, and shows that every semiclassical measure has full support. We also prove exponential energy decay for solutions to the damped wave equation on such surfaces, for any nontrivial damping coefficient. These results extend previous works [arXiv:1705.05019], [arXiv:1712.02692], which considered the setting of surfaces of constant negative curvature. The proofs use the strategy of [arXiv:1705.05019], [arXiv:1712.02692] and rely on the fractal uncertainty principle of [arXiv:1612.09040]. However, in the variable curvature case the stable/unstable foliations are not smooth, so we can no longer associate to these foliations a pseudodifferential calculus of the type used in [arXiv:1504.06589]. Instead, our argument uses Egorov's Theorem up to local Ehrenfest time and the hyperbolic parametrix of [arXiv:0706.3242], together with the $C^{1+}$ regularity of the stable/unstable foliations.

Local eigenvalue statistics of one-dimensional random non-selfadjoint pseudo-differential operators

We consider a class of one-dimensional nonselfadjoint semiclassical pseudo-differential operators, subject to small random perturbations, and study the statistical properties of their (discrete) spectra, in the semiclassical limit $h\to 0$. We compare two types of random perturbation: a random potential vs. a random matrix. Hager and Sjöstrand had shown that, with high probability, the local spectral density of the perturbed operator follows a semiclassical form of Weyl's law, depending on the value distribution of the principal symbol of our pseudodifferential operator. Beyond the spectral density, we investigate the full local statistics of the perturbed spectrum, and show that it satisfies a form of universality: the statistical only depends on the local spectral density, and of the type of random perturbation, but it is independent of the precise law of the perturbation. This local statistics can be described in terms of the Gaussian Analytic Function, a classical ensemble of random entire functions.

Eigenmodes of the damped wave equation and small hyperbolic subsets

We study stationary solutions of the damped wave equation on a compact and smooth Riemannian manifold without boundary. In the high frequency limit, we prove that a sequence of $β$-damped stationary solutions cannot be completely concentrated in small neighborhoods of a small fixed hyperbolic subset made of $β$-damped trajectories of the geodesic flow. The article also includes an appendix (by S. Nonnenmacher and the author) where we establish the existence of an inverse logarithmic strip without eigenvalues below the real axis, under a pressure condition on the set of undamped trajectories.

Strong Scarring of Logarithmic Quasimodes

We consider a semiclassical (pseudo)differential operator on a compact surface $(M,g)$, such that the Hamiltonian flow generated by its principal symbol admits a hyperbolic periodic orbit $γ$ at some energy $E_0$. For any $ε>0$, we then explicitly construct families of quasimodes of this operator, satisfying an energy width of order $ε\frac{h}{|\log h|}$ in the semiclassical limit, but which still exhibit a "strong scar" on the orbit $γ$, i.e. that these states have a positive weight in any microlocal neighbourhood of $γ$. We pay attention to optimizing the constants involved in the estimates. This result generalizes a recent result of Brooks \cite{Br13} in the case of hyperbolic surfaces. Our construction, inspired by the works of Vergini et al. in the physics literature, relies on controlling the propagation of Gaussian wavepackets up to the Ehrenfest time.

Anatomy of quantum chaotic eigenstates

The eigenfunctions of quantized chaotic systems cannot be described by explicit formulas, even approximate ones. This survey summarizes (selected) analytical approaches used to describe these eigenstates, in the semiclassical limit. The levels of description are macroscopic (one wants to understand the quantum averages of smooth observables), and microscopic (one wants informations on maxima of eigenfunctions, "scars" of periodic orbits, structure of the nodal sets and domains, local correlations), and often focusses on statistical results. Various models of "random wavefunctions" have been introduced to understand these statistical properties, with usually good agreement with the numerical data. We also discuss some specific systems (like arithmetic ones) which depart from these random models.

Decay rates for the damped wave equation on the torus

We address the decay rates of the energy for the damped wave equation when the damping coefficient $b$ does not satisfy the Geometric Control Condition (GCC). First, we give a link with the controllability of the associated Schrödinger equation. We prove in an abstract setting that the observability of the Schrödinger group implies that the semigroup associated to the damped wave equation decays at rate $1/\sqrt{t}$ (which is a stronger rate than the general logarithmic one predicted by the Lebeau Theorem). Second, we focus on the 2-dimensional torus. We prove that the best decay one can expect is $1/t$, as soon as the damping region does not satisfy GCC. Conversely, for smooth damping coefficients $b$, we show that the semigroup decays at rate $1/t^{1-\eps}$, for all $\eps >0$. The proof relies on a second microlocalization around trapped directions, and resolvent estimates. In the case where the damping coefficient is a characteristic function of a strip (hence discontinuous), Stéphane Nonnenmacher computes in an appendix part of the spectrum of the associated damped wave operator, proving that the semigroup cannot decay faster than $1/t^{2/3}$. In particular, our study shows that the decay rate highly depends on the way $b$ vanishes.

Spectral problems in open quantum chaos

This review article will present some recent results and methods in the study of 1-particle quantum or wave scattering systems, in the semiclassical/high frequency limit, in cases where the corresponding classical/ray dynamics is chaotic. We will focus on the distribution of quantum resonances, and the structure of the corresponding metastable states. Our study includes the toy model of open quantum maps, as well as the recent quantum monodromy operator method.

Spectral theory of damped quantum chaotic systems

We investigate the spectral distribution of the damped wave equation on a compact Riemannian manifold, especially in the case of a metric of negative curvature, for which the geodesic flow is Anosov. The main application is to obtain conditions (in terms of the geodesic flow on $X$ and the damping function) for which the energy of the waves decays exponentially fast, at least for smooth enough initial data. We review various estimates for the high frequency spectrum in terms of dynamically defined quantities, like the value distribution of the time-averaged damping. We also present a new condition for a spectral gap, depending on the set of minimally damped trajectories.

Entropy of chaotic eigenstates

These notes present a recent approach to study the high-frequency eigenstates of the Laplacian on compact Riemannian manifolds of negative sectional curvature. The main result is a lower bound on the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy of the semiclassical measures associated with sequences of eigenstates, showing that high-frequency eigenstates cannot be too localized. The method is extended to the case of semiclassical Hamiltonian operators for which the classical flow in some energy range is of Anosov type, and to the case of quantized Anosov diffeomorphisms on the torus.

Quantum transfer operators and quantum scattering

These notes describe a new method to investigate the spectral properties if quantum scattering Hamiltonians, developed in collaboration with J. Sjöstrand and M.Zworski. This method consists in constructing a family of "quantized transfer operators" $\{M(z,h)\}$ associated with a classical Poincaré section near some fixed classical energy E. These operators are finite dimensional, and have the structure of "open quantum maps". In the semiclassical limit, the family $\{M(z,h)\}$ encode the quantum dynamics near the energy E. In particular, the quantum resonances of the form $E+z$, for $z=O(h)$, are obtained as the roots of $\det(1-M(z,h))=0$.

Half-delocalization of eigenfunctions for the Laplacian on an Anosov manifold

We study the high-energy eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on a compact Riemannian manifold with Anosov geodesic flow. The localization of a semiclassical measure associated with a sequence of eigenfunctions is characterized by the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy of this measure. We show that this entropy is necessarily bounded from below by a constant which, in the case of constant negative curvature, equals half the maximal entropy. In this sense, high-energy eigenfunctions are at least half-delocalized.

Distribution of resonances for open quantum maps

We analyze simple models of classical chaotic open systems and of their quantizations (open quantum maps on the torus). Our models are similar to models recently studied in atomic and mesoscopic physics. They provide a numerical confirmation of the fractal Weyl law for the density of quantum resonances of such systems. The exponent in that law is related to the dimension of the classical repeller (or trapped set) of the system. In a simplified model, a rigorous argument gives the full resonance spectrum, which satisfies the fractal Weyl law. For this model, we can also compute a quantity characterizing the fluctuations of conductance through the system, namely the shot noise power: the value we obtain is close to the prediction of random matrix theory.

Entropy of semiclassical measures of the Walsh-quantized baker's map

We study the baker's map and its Walsh quantization, as a toy model of a quantized chaotic system. We focus on localization properties of eigenstates, in the semiclassical regime. Simple counterexamples show that quantum unique ergodicity fails for this model. We obtain, however, lower bounds on the entropies associated with semiclassical measures, as well as on the Wehrl entropies of eigenstates. The central tool of the proofs is an "entropic uncertainty principle".

Fractal Weyl laws in discrete models of chaotic scattering

We analyze simple models of quantum chaotic scattering, namely quantized open baker's maps. We numerically compute the density of quantum resonances in the semiclassical régime. This density satisfies a fractal Weyl law, where the exponent is governed by the (fractal) dimension of the set of trapped trajectories. This type of behaviour is also expected in the (physically more relevant) case of Hamiltonian chaotic scattering. Within a simplified model, we are able to rigorously prove this Weyl law, and compute quantities related to the "coherent transport" through the system, namely the conductance and "shot noise". The latter is close to the prediction of random matrix theory.
