Mathematics of magic angles in a model of twisted bilayer graphene

We provide a mathematical account of the recent Physical Reviews Letter by Tarnopolsky--Kruchkov--Vishwanath. The new contributions are a spectral characterization of magic angles, its accurate numerical implementation and an exponential estimate on the squeezing of all bands as the angle decreases. Pseudospectral phenomena due to the non-hermitian nature of operators appearing in the model play a crucial role in our analysis.

Honeycomb structures in magnetic fields

We consider reduced-dimensionality models of honeycomb lattices in magnetic fields and report results about the spectrum, the density of states, self-similarity, and metal/insulator transitions under disorder. We perform a spectral analysis by which we discover a fractal Cantor spectrum for irrational magnetic flux through a honeycomb, prove the existence of zero energy Dirac cones for each rational flux, obtain an explicit expansion of the density of states near the conical points, and show the existence of mobility edges under Anderson-type disorder. Our results give a precise description of de Haas-van Alphen and Quantum Hall effects, and provide quantitative estimates on transport properties. In particular, our findings explain experimentally observed asymmetry phenomena by going beyond the perfect cone approximation.

Resonances for obstacles in hyperbolic space

We consider scattering by star-shaped obstacles in hyperbolic space and show that resonances satisfy a universal bound $\mathrm{Im}\,λ\leq -\frac{1}{2}$ which is optimal in dimension $2$. In odd dimensions we also show that $\mathrm{Im}\,λ\leq -\fracμρ$ for a universal constant $μ$, where $ρ$ is the radius of a ball containing the obstacle; this gives an improvement for small obstacles. In dimensions $3$ and higher the proofs follow the classical vector field approach of Morawetz, while in dimension $2$ we obtain our bound by working with spaces coming from general relativity. We also show that in odd dimensions resonances of small obstacles are close, in a suitable sense, to Euclidean resonances.

Viscosity limits for 0th order pseudodifferential operators

Motivated by the work of Colin de Verdière and Saint-Raymond on spectral theory 0th order pseudodifferential operators on tori we consider viscosity limits in which 0th order operators $ P $ are replaced by $ P + i νΔ$, $ ν> 0 $. By adapting the Helffer--Sjöstrand theory of scattering resonances we show that in a complex neighbourhood of the continuous spectrum eigenvalues of $ P + i νΔ$ have limits as viscosity $ ν$ goes to 0. In the simplified setting of tori this justifies claims made in the physics literature.

A Fermi golden rule for quantum graphs

We present a Fermi golden rule giving rates of decay of states obtained by perturbing embedded eigenvalues of a quantum graph. To illustrate the procedure in a notationally simpler setting we also present a Fermi Golden Rule for boundary value problems on surfaces with constant curvature cusps. We also provide a resonance existence result which is uniform on compact sets of energies and metric graphs. The results are illustrated by numerical experiments.

Stochastic stability of Pollicott-Ruelle resonances

Pollicott-Ruelle resonances for chaotic flows are the characteristic frequencies of correlations. They are typically defined as eigenvalues of the generator of the flow acting on specially designed functional spaces. We show that these resonances can be computed as viscosity limits of eigenvalues of second order elliptic operators. These eigenvalues are the characteristic frequencies of correlations for a stochastically perturbed flow.

Resonances for asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds: Vasy's method revisited

We revisit Vasy's method for showing meromorphy of the resolvent for (even) asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds. It provides an effective definition of resonances in that setting by identifying them with poles of inverses of a family of Fredholm differential operators. In the Euclidean case the method of complex scaling made this available since the 70's but in the hyperbolic case an effective definition was not known until recently. Here we present a simplified version which relies only on standard pseudodifferential techniques and estimates for hyperbolic operators. As a byproduct we obtain more natural invertibility properties of the Fredholm family.

Decay of correlations for normally hyperbolic trapping

We prove that for evolution problems with normally hyperbolic trapping in phase space, correlations decay exponentially in time. Normal hyperbolic trapping means that the trapped set is smooth and symplectic and that the flow is hyperbolic in directions transversal to it. Flows with this structure include contact Anosov flows, classical flows in molecular dynamics, and null geodesic flows for black holes metrics. The decay of correlations is a consequence of the existence of resonance free strips for Green's functions (cut-off resolvents) and polynomial bounds on the growth sof those functions in the semiclassical parameter.

Heat traces and existence of scattering resonances for bounded potentials

We show that, in odd dimensions, any real valued, bounded potential of compact support has at least one scattering resonance. For dimensions three and higher this was previously known only for sufficiently smooth potentials. The proof is based on an inverse result, which states that the trace of the associated heat kernel has an appropriate asymptotic expansion if and only if the potential is smooth.

Resolvent estimates for normally hyperbolic trapped sets

We give pole free strips and estimates for resolvents of semiclassical operators which, on the level of the classical flow, have normally hyperbolic smooth trapped sets of codimension two in phase space. Such trapped sets are structurally stable and our motivation comes partly from considering the wave equation for Kerr black holes and their perturbations, whose trapped sets have precisely this structure. We give applications including local smoothing effects with epsilon derivative loss for the Schrödinger propagator as well as local energy decay results for the wave equation.

Semiclassical Lp estimates

The purpose of this paper is to use semiclassical analysis to unify and generalize Lp estimates on high energy eigenfunctions and spectral clusters. In our approach these estimates do not depend on ellipticity and order, and apply to operators which are selfadjoint only at the principal level. They are estimates on weakly approximate solutions to semiclassical pseudodifferential equations. The revision corrects an exponent in the main theorems.

Control for Schrödinger equations on 2-tori: rough potentials

For the Schrödinger equation, $ (i \partial_t + Δ) u = 0 $ on a torus, an arbitrary non-empty open set $ Ω$ provides control and observability of the solution: $ \| u |_{t = 0} \|_{L^2 (\T^2)} \leq K_T \| u \|_{L^2 ([0,T] \times Ω)} $. We show that the same result remains true for $ (i \partial_t + Δ- V) u = 0 $ where $ V \in L^2 (\T^2) $, and $ \T^2 $ is a (rational or irrational) torus. That extends the results of \cite{AM}, and \cite{BZ4} where the observability was proved for $ V \in C (\T^2) $ and conjectured for $ V \in L^\infty (\T^2) $. The higher dimensional generalization remains open for $ V \in L^\infty (\T^n) $.

Trapping of waves and null geodesics for rotating black holes

We present dynamical properties of linear waves and null geodesics valid for Kerr and Kerr-de Sitter black holes and their stationary perturbations. The two are intimately linked by the geometric optics approximation. For the nullgeodesic flow the key property is the r-normal hyperbolicity of the trapped set and for linear waves it is the distribution of quasi-normal modes: the exact quantization conditions do not hold for perturbations but the bounds on decay rates and the statistics of frequencies are still valid.

A quantitative version of the Catlin-D'Angelo-Quillen theorem

A theorem proved by Quillen and by Catlin and D'Angelo states that a bi-homogeneous form on a multidimensional complex space which is positive away from zero can be written as a sum of squares of absolute values of polynomials once it is multiplied by the norm raised to a sufficiently high even power. In this note we provide a quantitative version of this theorem by giving an upper bound on the minimal power. This bound is roughly C_f (n+m)^3 log(n)^3, where n is the dimension and m the degree of the form, and C_f is a multiplicative constant depending only on f, inversely proportional to the minimum of f on the sphere.

Pointwise bounds on quasimodes of semiclassical Schrodinger operators in dimension two

We prove optimal pointwise bounds on quasimodes of semiclassical Schrodinger operators with arbitrary smooth real potentials in dimension two. This end-point estimate was left open in the general study of semiclassical Lp bounds conducted by Koch-Tataru-Zworski. However, we show that their results imply the two dimensional end-point estimate by scaling and localization.

preprint2011arXiv

Control for Schroedinger operators on tori

A well known result of Jaffard states that an arbitrary region on a torus controls, in the L2 sense, solutions of the free stationary and dynamical Schroedinger equations. In this note we show that the same result is valid in the presence of a smooth time-independent potential. The methods apply to continuous potentials as well and we conjecture that the L2 control is valid for any bounded time dependent potential.

Weighted eigenfunction estimates with applications to compressed sensing

Using tools from semiclassical analysis, we give weighted L^\infty estimates for eigenfunctions of strictly convex surfaces of revolution. These estimates give rise to new sampling techniques and provide improved bounds on the number of samples necessary for recovering sparse eigenfunction expansions on surfaces of revolution. On the sphere, our estimates imply that any function having an s-sparse expansion in the first N spherical harmonics can be efficiently recovered from its values at m > s N^(1/6) log^4(N) sampling points.

Effective dynamics of double solitons for perturbed mKdV

We show that an interacting double soliton solution to the perturbed mKdV equation is close in $H^2$ to a double soliton following an effective dynamics obtained as Hamilton's equations for the restriction of the mKdV Hamiltonian to the submanifold of solitons. The interplay between algebraic aspects of complete integrability of the unperturbed equation and the analytic ideas related to soliton stability is central in the proof.

Breathing patterns in nonlinear relaxation

In numerical experiments involving nonlinear solitary waves propagating through nonhomogeneous media one observes "breathing" in the sense of the amplitude of the wave going up and down on a much faster scale than the motion of the wave. In this paper we investigate this phenomenon in the simplest case of stationary waves in which the evolution corresponds to relaxation to a nonlinear ground state. The particular model is the popular $ δ_0 $ impurity in the cubic nonlinear Schroedinger equation on the line. We give asymptotics of the amplitude on a finite but relevant time interval and show their remarkable agreement with numerical experiments. We stress the nonlinear origin of the "breathing patterns" caused by the selection of the ground state depending on the initial data, and by the non-normality of the linearized operator.

Distribution of resonances for open quantum maps

We analyze simple models of classical chaotic open systems and of their quantizations (open quantum maps on the torus). Our models are similar to models recently studied in atomic and mesoscopic physics. They provide a numerical confirmation of the fractal Weyl law for the density of quantum resonances of such systems. The exponent in that law is related to the dimension of the classical repeller (or trapped set) of the system. In a simplified model, a rigorous argument gives the full resonance spectrum, which satisfies the fractal Weyl law. For this model, we can also compute a quantity characterizing the fluctuations of conductance through the system, namely the shot noise power: the value we obtain is close to the prediction of random matrix theory.

preprint2005arXiv

Fractal Weyl laws in discrete models of chaotic scattering

We analyze simple models of quantum chaotic scattering, namely quantized open baker's maps. We numerically compute the density of quantum resonances in the semiclassical régime. This density satisfies a fractal Weyl law, where the exponent is governed by the (fractal) dimension of the set of trapped trajectories. This type of behaviour is also expected in the (physically more relevant) case of Hamiltonian chaotic scattering. Within a simplified model, we are able to rigorously prove this Weyl law, and compute quantities related to the "coherent transport" through the system, namely the conductance and "shot noise". The latter is close to the prediction of random matrix theory.
