On representations of direct products and the bounded generation property of branch groups

We prove that the minimal representation dimension of a direct product $G$ of non-abelian groups $G_1,\ldots,G_n$ is bounded below by $n+1$ and thereby answer a question of Abért. If each $G_i$ is moreover non-solvable, then this lower bound can be improved to be $2n$. By combining this with results of Pyber, Segal, and Shusterman on the structure of boundedly generated groups we show that branch groups cannot be boundedly generated.

On upper bounds for the first $\ell^2$-Betti number

This article presents a method for proving upper bounds for the first $\ell^2$-Betti number of groups using only the geometry of the Cayley graph. As an application we prove that Burnside groups of large prime exponent have vanishing first $\ell^2$-Betti number. Our approach extends to generalizations of $\ell^2$-Betti numbers, that are defined using characters. We illustrate this flexibility by generalizing results of Thom-Peterson on q-normal subgroups to this setting.

A note on $p$-adic simplicial volumes

We define and study generalizations of simplicial volume over arbitrary seminormed rings with a focus on $p$-adic simplicial volumes. We investigate the dependence on the prime and establish homology bounds in terms of $p$-adic simplicial volumes. As the main examples we compute the weightless and $p$-adic simplicial volumes of surfaces. This gives a way to calculate classical simplicial volume of surfaces without hyperbolic straightening and shows that surfaces satisfy mod $p$ and $p$-adic approximation of simplicial volume.

Zeta functions associated to admissible representations of compact p-adic Lie groups

Let $G$ be a profinite group. A strongly admissible smooth representation $ρ$ of $G$ over $\mathbb{C}$ decomposes as a direct sum $ρ\cong \bigoplus_{π\in \mathrm{Irr}(G)} m_π(ρ) \, π$ of irreducible representations with finite multiplicities $m_π(ρ)$ such that for every positive integer $n$ the number $r_n(ρ)$ of irreducible constituents of dimension $n$ is finite. Examples arise naturally in the representation theory of reductive groups over non-archimedean local fields. In this article we initiate an investigation of the Dirichlet generating function \[ ζ_ρ(s) = \sum_{n=1}^\infty r_n(ρ) n^{-s} = \sum_{π\in \mathrm{Irr}(G)} \frac{m_π(ρ)}{(\dim π)^s} \] associated to such a representation $ρ$. Our primary focus is on representations $ρ= \mathrm{Ind}_H^G(σ)$ of compact $p$-adic Lie groups $G$ that arise from finite dimensional representations $σ$ of closed subgroups $H$ via the induction functor. In addition to a series of foundational results - including a description in terms of $p$-adic integrals - we establish rationality results and functional equations for zeta functions of globally defined families of induced representations of potent pro-$p$ groups. A key ingredient of our proof is Hironaka's resolution of singularities, which yields formulae of Denef-type for the relevant zeta functions. In some detail, we consider representations of open compact subgroups of reductive $p$-adic groups that are induced from parabolic subgroups. Explicit computations are carried out by means of complementing techniques: (i) geometric methods that are applicable via distance-transitive actions on spherically homogeneous rooted trees and (ii) the $p$-adic Kirillov orbit method. Approach (i) is closely related to the notion of Gelfand pairs and works equally well in positive defining characteristic.

Groups acting on rooted trees and their representations on the boundary

We consider groups that act on spherically symmetric rooted trees and study the associated representation of the group on the space of locally constant functions on the boundary of the tree. We introduce and discuss the new notion of locally 2-transitive actions. Assuming local 2-transitivity our main theorem yields a precise decomposition of the boundary representation into irreducible constituents. The method can be used to study Gelfand pairs and enables us to answer a question of Grigorchuk. To provide examples, we analyse in detail the local 2-transitivity of GGS-groups. Moreover, our results can be used to determine explicit formulae for zeta functions of induced representations defined by Klopsch and the author.

On $p$-adic limits of topological invariants

The purpose of this article is to define and study new invariants of topological spaces: the $p$-adic Betti numbers and the $p$-adic torsion. These invariants take values in the $p$-adic numbers and are constructed from a virtual pro-$p$ completion of the fundamental group. The key result of the article is an approximation theorem which shows that the $p$-adic invariants are limits of their classical analogues. This is reminiscent of Lück's approximation theorem for $L^2$-Betti numbers. After an investigation of basic properties and examples we discuss the $p$-adic analog of the Atiyah conjecture: When do the $p$-adic Betti numbers take integer values? We establish this property for a class of spaces and discuss applications to cohomology growth.

Characters, $L^2$-Betti numbers and an equivariant approximation theorem

Let $G$ be a group with a finite subgroup $H$. We define the $L^2$-multiplicity of an irreducible representation of $H$ in the $L^2$-homology of a proper $G$-CW-complex. These invariants generalize the $L^2$-Betti numbers. Our main results are approximation theorems for $L^2$-multiplicities which extend the approximation theorems for $L^2$-Betti numbers of Lück, Farber and Elek-Szabó respectively. The main ingredient is the theory of characters of infinite groups and a method to induce characters from finite subgroups. We discuss applications to the cohomology of (arithmetic) groups.

Positively finitely related profinite groups

We define and study the class of positively finitely related (PFR) profinite groups. Positive finite relatedness is a probabilistic property of profinite groups which provides a first step to defining higher finiteness properties of profinite groups which generalize the positively finitely generated groups introduced by Avinoam Mann. We prove many asymptotic characterisations of PFR groups, for instance we show the following: a finitely presented profinite group is PFR if and only if it has at most exponential representation growth, uniformly over finite fields (in other words: the completed group algebra has polynomial maximal ideal growth). From these characterisations we deduce several structural results on PFR profinite groups.

A geometric approach to divergent points of higher dimensional Collatz mappings

We define generalized Collatz mappings on free abelian groups of finite rank and study their iteration trajectories. Using geometric arguments we describe cones of points having a divergent trajectory and we deduce lower bounds for the density of the set of divergent points. As an application we give examples which show that the iteration of generalized Collatz mappings on rings of algebraic integers can behave quite differently from the conjectured behavior in $Z$.

On geometric aspects of diffuse groups

Bowditch introduced the notion of diffuse groups as a geometric variation of the unique product property. We elaborate on various examples and non-examples, keeping the geometric point of view from Bowditch's paper. In particular, we discuss fundamental groups of flat and hyperbolic manifolds. The appendix settles an open question by providing an example of a group which is diffuse but not left-orderable.

Lefschetz numbers of symplectic involutions on arithmetic groups

The reduced norm-one group G of a central simple algebra is an inner form of the special linear group, and an involution on the algebra induces an automorphism of G. We study the action of such automorphisms in the cohomology of arithmetic subgroups of G. The main result is a precise formula for Lefschetz numbers of automorphisms induced by involutions of symplectic type. Our approach is based on a careful study of the smoothness properties of group schemes associated with orders in central simple algebras. Along the way we also derive an adelic reformulation of Harder's Gauss-Bonnet Theorem.

On equivariant Euler-Poincaré characteristic in sheaf cohomology

Let X be a topological Hausdorff space together with a continuous action of a finite group G. Let R be the ring of integers of a number field F. Let E be a G-sheaf of flat R-modules over X and let $Φ$ be a G-stable paracompactifying family of supports on X. We show that under some natural cohomological finiteness conditions the Lefschetz number of the action of g in G on the cohomology $H_Φ(X,E) \otimes_{R} F$ equals the Lefschetz number of the g-action on $H_Φ(X^g, E_{|X^g}) \otimes_{R} F$, where $X^g$ is the set of fixed points of g in X. More generally, the class $\sum_j (-1)^j [H^j_Φ(X,E) \otimes_R F]$ in the character group equals a sum of representations induced from irreducible F-rational representations $V_λ$ of $H$ where $H$ runs in the set of G-conjugacy classes of subgroups of G. The integral coefficients $m_λ$ in this sum are explicitly determined.
