Bounded acyclicity and relative simplicial volume

We provide new vanishing and glueing results for relative simplicial volume, following up on two current themes in bounded cohomology: The passage from amenable groups to boundedly acyclic groups and the use of equivariant topology. More precisely, we consider equivariant nerve pairs and relative classifying spaces for families of subgroups. Typically, we apply this to uniformly boundedly acyclic families of subgroups. Our methods also lead to vanishing results for $\ell^2$-Betti numbers of aspherical CW-pairs with small relative amenable category and to a relative version of a result by Dranishnikov and Rudyak concerning mapping degrees and the inheritance of freeness of fundamental groups.

Bounded cohomology and binate groups

A group is boundedly acyclic if its bounded cohomology with trivial real coefficients vanishes in all positive degrees. Amenable groups are boundedly acyclic, while the first non-amenable examples were the group of compactly supported homeomorphisms of $\mathbb{R}^n$ (Matsumoto--Morita) and mitotic groups (Löh). We prove that binate (alias pseudo-mitotic) groups are boundedly acyclic, which provides a unifying approach to the aforementioned results. Moreover, we show that binate groups are universally boundedly acyclic. We obtain several new examples of boundedly acyclic groups as well as computations of the bounded cohomology of certain groups acting on the circle. In particular, we discuss how these results suggest that the bounded cohomology of the Thompson groups $F$, $T$, and $V$ is as simple as possible.

A note on $p$-adic simplicial volumes

We define and study generalizations of simplicial volume over arbitrary seminormed rings with a focus on $p$-adic simplicial volumes. We investigate the dependence on the prime and establish homology bounds in terms of $p$-adic simplicial volumes. As the main examples we compute the weightless and $p$-adic simplicial volumes of surfaces. This gives a way to calculate classical simplicial volume of surfaces without hyperbolic straightening and shows that surfaces satisfy mod $p$ and $p$-adic approximation of simplicial volume.

The spectrum of simplicial volume

New constructions in group homology allow us to manufacture high-dimensional manifolds with controlled simplicial volume. We prove that for every dimension bigger than 3 the set of simplicial volumes of orientable closed connected manifolds is dense in $\mathbb{R}_{\geq 0}$. In dimension 4 we prove that every non-negative rational number is the simplicial volume of some orientable closed connected 4-manifold. Our group theoretic results relate stable commutator length to the $l^1$-semi-norm of certain singular homology classes in degree 2. The output of these results is translated into manifold constructions using cross-products and Thom realisation.

A note on bounded-cohomological dimension of discrete groups

Bounded-cohomological dimension of groups is a relative of classical cohomological dimension, defined in terms of bounded cohomology with trivial coefficients instead of ordinary group cohomology. We will discuss constructions that lead to groups with infinite bounded-cohomological dimension, and we will provide new examples of groups with bounded-cohomological dimension equal to 0. In particular, we will prove that every group functorially embeds into an acyclic group with trivial bounded cohomology.

Finite functorial semi-norms and representability

Functorial semi-norms are semi-normed refinements of functors such as singular (co)homology. We investigate how different types of representability affect the (non-)triviality of finite functorial semi-norms on certain functors or classes. In particular, we consider representable functors, generalised cohomology theories, and so-called weakly flexible homology classes in singular homology and l1-homology.

Functorial semi-norms on singular homology and (in)flexible manifolds

A functorial semi-norm on singular homology is a collection of semi-norms on the singular homology groups of spaces such that continuous maps between spaces induce norm-decreasing maps in homology. Functorial semi-norms can be used to give constraints on the possible mapping degrees of maps between oriented manifolds. In this paper, we use information about the degrees of maps between manifolds to construct new functorial semi-norms with interesting properties. In particular, we answer a question of Gromov by providing a functorial semi-norm that takes finite positive values on homology classes of certain simply connected spaces. Our construction relies on the existence of simply connected manifolds that are inflexible in the sense that all their self-maps have degree -1, 0, or 1. The existence of such manifolds was first established by Arkowitz and Lupton; we extend their methods to produce a wide variety of such manifolds.

Integral Foliated Simplicial Volume of Aspherical Manifolds

We consider the relation between simplicial volume and two of its variants: the stable integral simplicial volume and the integral foliated simplicial volume. The definition of the latter depends on a choice of a measure preserving action of the fundamental group on a probability space. We show that integral foliated simplicial volume is monotone with respect to weak containment of measure preserving actions and yields upper bounds on (integral) homology growth. Using ergodic theory we prove that simplicial volume, integral foliated simplicial volume and stable integral simplicial volume coincide for closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds and closed aspherical manifolds with amenable residually finite fundamental group (being equal to zero in the latter case). However, we show that integral foliated simplicial volume and the classical simplicial volume do not coincide for hyperbolic manifolds of dimension at least 4.

Odd manifolds of small integral simplicial volume

Integral simplicial volume is a homotopy invariant of oriented closed connected manifolds, defined as the minimal weighted number of singular simplices needed to represent the fundamental class with integral coefficients. We show that odd-dimensional spheres are the only manifolds with integral simplicial volume equal to 1. Consequently, we obtain an elementary proof that, in general, the integral simplicial volume of (triangulated) manifolds is not computable.

The $\ell^\infty$-semi-norm on uniformly finite homology

Uniformly finite homology is a coarse homology theory, defined via chains that satisfy a uniform boundedness condition. By construction, uniformly finite homology carries a canonical $\ell^\infty$-semi-norm. We show that, for uniformly discrete spaces of bounded geometry, this semi-norm on uniformly finite homology in degree 0 with integral coefficients allows for a new formulation of Whyte's rigidity result. In contrast, we prove that this semi-norm is trivial on uniformly finite homology in higher degrees with real coefficients.

Integral foliated simplicial volume of hyperbolic 3-manifolds

Integral foliated simplicial volume is a version of simplicial volume combining the rigidity of integral coefficients with the flexibility of measure spaces. In this article, using the language of measure equivalence of groups we prove a proportionality principle for integral foliated simplicial volume for aspherical manifolds and give refined upper bounds of integral foliated simplicial volume in terms of stable integral simplicial volume. This allows us to compute the integral foliated simplicial volume of hyperbolic 3-manifolds. This is complemented by the calculation of the integral foliated simplicial volume of Seifert 3-manifolds.

Which finitely generated Abelian groups admit equal growth functions?

We show that finitely generated Abelian groups admit equal growth functions with respect to symmetric generating sets if and only if they have the same rank and the torsion parts have the same parity. In contrast, finitely generated Abelian groups admit equal growth functions with respect to monoid generating sets if and only if they have same rank. Moreover, we show that the size of the torsion part is in fact determined by the set of all growth functions of a finitely generated Abelian group.

Degree theorems and Lipschitz simplicial volume for non-positively curved manifolds of finite volume

We study a metric version of the simplicial volume on Riemannian manifolds, the Lipschitz simplicial volume, with applications to degree theorems in mind. We establish a proportionality principle and a product inequality from which we derive an extension of Gromov's volume comparison theorem to products of negatively curved manifolds or locally symmetric spaces of non-compact type. In contrast, we provide vanishing results for the ordinary simplicial volume; for instance, we show that the ordinary simplicial volume of non-compact locally symmetric spaces with finite volume of Q-rank at least 3 is zero.
