Dynamical Abelianization and anomalies in chiral gauge theories

We explore the idea that in some class of strongly-coupled chiral $SU(N)$ gauge theories the infrared dynamics might be characterized by a bifermion condensate in the adjoint representation of the color gauge group. As an illustration, in this work we revisit an $SU(N)$ chiral gauge theory with Weyl fermions in a symmetric ($ψ$) and anti-antisymmetric ($χ$) tensor representations, together with eight fermions in the anti-fundamental representations ($η$), which we called $ψχη$ model in the previous investigations. We study the infrared dynamics of this system more carefully, by assuming dynamical Abelianization, a phenomenon familiar from ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories, and by analyzing the way various continuous and discrete symmetries are realized at low energies. We submit then these ideas to a more stringent test, by taking into account some higher-form symmetries and the consequent mixed anomalies. A detailed analysis of the mixed anomalies involving certain $0$-form $U(1)$ symmetries and the color-flavor locked $1$-form $Z_N$ symmetry in the $ψχη$ system shows that the proposed infrared dynamics is consistent with it.

On the time dependence of holographic complexity for charged AdS black holes with scalar hair

In the presence of a scalar hair perturbation, the Cauchy horizon of a Reissner-Nordström black hole disappears and is replaced by the rapid collapse of the Einstein-Rosen bridge, which leads to a Kasner singularity [1,2]. We study the time-dependence of holographic complexity, both for the volume and for the action proposals, in a class of models with hairy black holes. Volume complexity can only probe a portion of the black hole interior that remains far away from the Kasner singularity. We provide numerical evidence that the Lloyd bound is satisfied by the volume complexity rate in all the parameter space that we explored. Action complexity can instead probe a portion of the spacetime closer to the singularity. In particular, the complexity rate diverges at the critical time $t_c$ for which the Wheeler-DeWitt patch touches the singularity. After the critical time the action complexity rate approaches a constant. We find that the Kasner exponent does not directly affect the details of the divergence of the complexity rate at $t=t_c$ and the late-time behaviour of the complexity. The Lloyd bound is violated by action complexity at finite time, because the complexity rate diverges at $t=t_c$. We find that the Lloyd bound is satisfied by the asymptotic action complexity rate in all the parameter space that we investigated.

Analytic Baby Skyrmions at Finite Density

We introduce a consistent ansatz for the baby Skyrme model in (2+1)-dimensions which is able to reduce the complete set of field equations to just one equation for the profile function in situations in which the baby baryon charge can be arbitrary. Many analytic solutions both with and without the inclusion of the effects of the minimal coupling with the Maxwell field are constructed. Linear stability and other physical properties are discussed. These analytic gauged baby Skyrmions generate a persistent $U(1)$ current which cannot be turned off continuously as it is tied to the topological charge of the baby Skyrmions themselves. In the simplest non-trivial case of a gauged baby Skyrmion, a very important role is played by the Mathieu equation with an effective coupling constant which can be computed explicitly. These configurations are a very suitable arena to test resurgence in a non-integrable context.

Deuteron electric dipole moment from holographic QCD

We compute the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the deuteron in the holographic QCD model of Witten-Sakai-Sugimoto. Previously, the leading contribution to the EDM of nucleons was computed, finding opposite values for the proton and the neutron which then cancel each other in the deuteron state. Here we compute the next-to-leading order contribution which provides a splitting between their absolute value. At large $N_{\rm c}$ and large 't Hooft coupling $λ$, nuclei are bound states of almost isolated nucleons. In particular, we find that in this limit the deuteron EDM is given by the splitting between proton and neutron EDMs. Our estimate for the deuteron EDM extrapolated to the physical values of $N_{\rm c}$, $λ$, $M_{\rm KK}$ and $m_q$ is $\mathcal{D}_D = -0.92\times 10^{-16} θ e \cdot {cm}$. This is consistent, in sign and magnitude, with results found previously in the literature and obtained using completely different methods.

Dynamics from symmetries in chiral $SU(N)$ gauge theories

The symmetries and dynamics of simple chiral $SU(N)$ gauge theories, with matter Weyl fermions in a two-index symmetric tensor and $N+4$ anti-fundamental representations, are examined, by taking advantage of the recent developments involving the ideas of generalized symmetries, gauging of discrete center 1-form symmetries and mixed 't Hooft anomalies. This class of models are particularly interesting because the conventional 't Hooft anomaly matching constraints allow a chirally symmetric confining vacuum, with no condensates breaking the $U(1) \times SU(N+4)$ flavor symmetry, and with certain set of massless baryonlike composite fermions saturating all the associated anomaly triangles. Our calculations show that in such a vacuum the UV-IR matching of some $0$-form$-$$1$-form mixed 't Hooft anomalies fails. This implies, for the theories with even $N$ at least, that a chirally symmetric confining vacuum contemplated earlier in the literature actually cannot be realized dynamically. In contrast, a Higgs phase characterized by some gauge-noninvariant bifermion condensates passes our improved scrutiny.

Gauging 1-form center symmetries in simple $SU(N)$ gauge theories

Consequences of gauging exact $Z_k^C$ center symmetries in several simple $SU(N)$ gauge theories, where $k$ is a divisor of $N$, are investigated. Models discussed include: the $SU(N)$ gauge theory with $N_f$ copies of Weyl fermions in self-adjoint single-column antisymmetric representation, the well-discussed adjoint QCD, QCD-like theories in which the quarks are in a two-index representation of $SU(N)$, and a chiral $SU(N)$ theory with fermions in the symmetric as well as in anti-antisymmetric representations but without fundamentals. Mixed 't Hooft anomalies between the 1-form $Z_k^C$ symmetry and some 0-form (standard) discrete symmetry provide us with useful information about the infrared dynamics of the system. In some cases they give decisive indication to select only few possiblities for the infrared phase of the theory.

Vortons with Abelian and non-Abelian currents and their stability

We explore vorton solutions in the Witten's $U(1) \times U(1)$ model for cosmic strings and in a modified version $U(1) \times SO(3)$ obtained by introducing a triplet of non-Abelian fields to condense inside the string. We restrict to the case in which the unbroken symmetry in the bulk remains global. The vorton solutions are found numerically for certain choices of parameters and compared with an analytical solutions obtained in the thin vorton limit. We also discuss the vorton decay into Q-rings (or spinning Q-balls) and, to some extent, the time dependent behavior of vortons above the charge threshold.

A Cosmology of a Trans-Planckian Theory and Dark Energy

We investigate a model based on a generalised version of the Fourier transform for curved space-time manifolds. This model is possible if the metric has an asymptotic flat region which allows a duality to be implement between coordinates and momenta, hence, the models's name, trans-Planckian. The theory and the action are based on the postulate of the absolute egalitarian relation between coordinates $x$ and momenta $p$. We show how to implement this construction in a cosmological setting, on a Friedman-Robertson-Walker metric background, where the asymptotic time infinity plays the role of the required asymptotic flat region. We discuss the effect of gravity, and, in particular, of the Hubble expansion of the universe scale factor on the Fourier map. The dual inflationary stage is responsible for making the dual sector of the action inaccessible at ordinary low energies. We propose a scenario in which an effective positive cosmological constant is caused by how the dual sector of the theory affects the equation of state for matter particles.

Large-N CP(N-1) sigma model on a finite interval: physical boundary effects

We analyze the two-dimensional CP(N-1) sigma model defined on a finite space interval L, with various boundary conditions, in the large N limit. With the Dirichlet boundary condition at the both ends, we show that the system has a unique phase, which smoothly approaches in the large L limit the standard 2D CP(N-1) sigma model in confinement phase, with a constant mass generated for the n(i) fields. We study the full functional saddle-point equations for finite L, and solve them numerically. The latter reduces to the well-known gap equation in the large L limit. It is found that the solution satisfies actually both the Dirichlet and Neumann conditions.

String pair production in non homogeneous backgrounds

We consider string pair production in non homogeneous electric backgrounds. We study several particular configurations which can be addressed with the Euclidean world-sheet instanton technique, the analogue of the world-line instanton for particles. In the first case the string is suspended between two D-branes in flat space-time, in the second case the string lives in AdS and terminates on one D-brane (this realizes the holographic Schwinger effect). In some regions of parameter space the result is well approximated by the known analytical formulas, either the particle pair production in non-homogeneous background or the string pair production in homogeneous background. In other cases we see effects which are intrinsically stringy and related to the non-homogeneity of the background. The pair production is enhanced already for particles in time dependent electric field backgrounds. The string nature enhances this even further. For spacial varying electrical background fields the string pair production is less suppressed than the rate of particle pair production. We discuss in some detail how the critical field is affected by the non-homogeneity, for both time and space dependent electric field backgrouds. We also comment on what could be an interesting new prediction for the small field limit. The third case we consider is pair production in holographic confining backgrounds with homogeneous and non-homogeneous fields.

$\mathcal{N}=2$ Argyres-Douglas theories, $\mathcal{N}=1$ SQCD and Seiberg duality

We revisit the study of singular points in the Coulomb branch of $\mathcal{N}=2$ SQCD in four dimensions with gauge group $SU(N)$ and odd number of flavors. For certain choices of the mass parameters these vacua are not lifted by a mass term for the chiral multiplet in the adjoint representation. By using recent results about the M5 brane description of $\mathcal{N}=1$ theories we study the resulting vacua and argue that the low-energy effective theory has a simple Lagrangian description involving a free chiral multiplet in the adjoint representation of the flavor symmetry group, a system somewhat reminiscent of the standard low-energy pion description of the real-world QCD. This fact is quite remarkable in view of the fact that the underlying $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFT (the Argyres-Douglas systems) are strongly-coupled non-local theories of quarks and monopoles.

Magnetic bags in hyperbolic space

A magnetic bag is an abelian approximation to a large number of coincident SU(2) BPS monopoles. In this paper we consider magnetic bags in hyperbolic space and derive their Nahm transform from the large charge limit of the discrete Nahm equation for hyperbolic monopoles. An advantage of studying magnetic bags in hyperbolic space, rather than Euclidean space, is that a range of exact charge N hyperbolic monopoles can be constructed, for arbitrarily large values of N, and compared with the magnetic bag approximation. We show that a particular magnetic bag (the magnetic disc) provides a good description of the axially symmetric N-monopole. However, an abelian magnetic bag is not a good approximation to a roughly spherical N-monopole that has more than N zeros of the Higgs field. We introduce an extension of the magnetic bag that does provide a good approximation to such monopoles and involves a spherical non-abelian interior for the bag, in addition to the conventional abelian exterior.

NonAbelian Vortices, Large Winding Limits and Aharonov-Bohm Effects

Remarkable simplification arises from considering vortex equations in the large winding limit. This was recently used in [1] to display all sorts of vortex zeromodes, the orientational, translational, fermionic as well as semi-local, and to relate them to the apparently distinct phenomena of the Nielsen-Olesen-Ambjorn magnetic instabilities. Here we extend these analyses to more general types of BPS nonAbelian vortices, taking as a prototype a system with gauged U(1) x SU(N) x SU(N) symmetry where the VEV of charged scalar fields in the bifundamental representation breaks the symmetry to SU(N)_{l+r} . The presence of the massless SU(N)_{l+r} gauge fields in 4D bulk introduces all sorts of non-local, topological phenomena such as the nonAbelian Aharonov-Bohm effects, which in the theory with global SU(N)_r group (g_r=0) are washed away by the strongly fluctuating orientational zeromodes in the worldsheet. Physics changes qualitatively at the moment the right gauge coupling constant g_r is turned on.

Hyperbolic monopoles, JNR data and spectral curves

A large class of explicit hyperbolic monopole solutions can be obtained from JNR instanton data, if the curvature of hyperbolic space is suitably tuned. Here we provide explicit formulae for both the monopole spectral curve and its rational map in terms of JNR data. Examples with platonic symmetry are presented, together with some one-parameter families with cyclic and dihedral symmetries. These families include hyperbolic analogues of geodesics that describe symmetric monopole scatterings in Euclidean space and we illustrate the results with energy density isosurfaces. There is a metric on the moduli space of hyperbolic monopoles, defined using the abelian connection on the boundary of hyperbolic space, and we provide a simple integral formula for this metric on the space of JNR data.

Vortex Zero Modes, Large Flux Limit and Ambjørn-Nielsen-Olesen Magnetic Instabilities

In the large flux limit vortices become flux tubes with almost constant magnetic field in the interior region. This occurs in the case of non-Abelian vortices as well, and the study of such configurations allows us to reveal a close relationship between vortex zero modes and the gyromagnetic instabilities of vector bosons in a strong background magnetic field discovered by Nielsen, Olesen and Ambjørn. The BPS vortices are exactly at the onset of this instability, and the dimension of their moduli space is precisely reproduced in this way. We present a unifying picture in which, through the study of the linear spectrum of scalars, fermions and W bosons in the magnetic field background, the expected number of translational, orientational, fermionic as well as semilocal zero modes is correctly reproduced in all cases.

A low-dimensional analogue of holographic baryons

Baryons in holographic QCD correspond to topological solitons in the bulk. The most prominent example is the Sakai-Sugimoto model, where the bulk soliton in the five-dimensional spacetime of AdS-type can be approximated by the flat space self-dual Yang-Mills instanton with a small size. Recently, the validity of this approximation has been verified by comparison with the numerical field theory solution. However, multi-solitons and solitons with finite density are currently beyond numerical field theory computations. Various approximations have been applied to investigate these important issues and have led to proposals for finite density configurations that include dyonic salt and baryonic popcorn. Here we introduce and investigate a low-dimensional analogue of the Sakai-Sugimoto model, in which the bulk soliton can be approximated by a flat space sigma model instanton. The bulk theory is a baby Skyrme model in a three-dimensional spacetime with negative curvature. The advantage of the lower-dimensional theory is that numerical simulations of multi-solitons and finite density solutions can be performed and compared with flat space instanton approximations. In particular, analogues of dyonic salt and baryonic popcorn configurations are found and analysed.

The Sakai-Sugimoto soliton

The Sakai-Sugimoto model is the preeminent example of a string theory description of holographic QCD, in which baryons correspond to topological solitons in the bulk. Here we investigate the validity of various approximations of the Sakai-Sugimoto soliton that are used widely to study the properties of holographic baryons. These approximations include the flat space self-dual instanton, a linear expansion in terms of eigenfunctions in the holographic direction and an asymptotic power series at large radius. These different approaches have produced contradictory results in the literature regarding properties of the baryon, such as relations for the electromagnetic form factors. Here we determine the regions of validity of these various approximations and show how to relate different approximations in contiguous regions of applicability. This analysis clarifies the source of the contradictory results in the literature and resolves some outstanding issues, including the use of the flat space self-dual instanton, the detailed properties of the asymptotic soliton tail, and the role of the UV cutoff introduced in previous investigations. A consequence of our analysis is the discovery of a new large scale, that grows logarithmically with the 't Hooft coupling, at which the soliton fields enter a nonlinear regime. Finally, we provide the first numerical computation of the Sakai-Sugimoto soliton and demonstrate that the numerical results support our analysis.

Holographic Dual of the Lowest Landau Level

We describe the lowest Landau level of a quantum electron star in AdS4. In the presence of a suitably strong magnetic field, the dynamics of fermions in the bulk is effectively reduced from four to two dimensions. These two-dimensional fermions can subsequently be treated using the techniques of bosonization and the difficult many-body problem of building a gravitating, charged quantum star is reduced to solving the sine-Gordon model coupled to a gauge field and a metric. The kinks of the sine-Gordon model provide the holographic dual of the lowest Landau levels of the strongly-coupled d=2+1 dimensional boundary field theory. The system exhibits order one oscillations in the magnetic susceptibility, now arising as a classical effect in the bulk. Moreover, as the chemical potential is varied, we find jumps in the charge density, oscillations in the fractionalised charge density and plateaux in the cohesive charge density

Magnetic Catalysis in AdS4

We study the formation of fermion condensates in Anti de Sitter space. In particular, we describe a novel version of magnetic catalysis that arises for fermions in asymptotically AdS4 geometries which cap off in the infra-red with a hard wall. We show that the presence of a magnetic field induces a fermion condensate in the bulk that spontaneously breaks CP symmetry. From the perspective of the dual boundary theory, this corresponds to a strongly coupled version of magnetic catalysis in d=2+1.

1/4 BPS String Junctions and $N^3$ Problem in 6-dim (2,0) Superconformal Theories

We explore 1/4 BPS objects in the Coulomb phase of the ADE-type 6-dim (2,0) superconformal theories. By using the previous work on the junctions of strings in 5-dim gauge theories and 6-dim superconformal theories, we count the number of 1/4 BPS objects, which are made of waves on selfdual strings and junctions of selfdual strings and show that for all cases the number matches exactly one third of the anomaly constant $c_G=d_G h_G$ which is the product of dimension $d_G$ and dual Coxeter number $h_G$. This suggests the long sought after $N^3$ degrees of freedom are these 1/4 BPS objects at least in the Coulomb phase.

Instanton Partons in 5-dim SU(N) Gauge Theory

The circle compactification of the 6-dim (2,0) superconformal theory of $A_{N-1}$ type leads the 5-dim SU(N) maximally supersymmetric gauge theory. Instanton solitons embody Kaluza-Klein modes and are conjectured to be composed of partonic constituents. We realize such a parton of 1/N instanton topological charge at the intersection of magnetic flux sheets. After a further compactification with nontrivial Wilson line expectation value, instantons or calorons have been shown to be split into fundamental monopoles of fractional instanton charge. In the symmetric phase with trivial Wilson line expectation value, BPS instanton partons emerge more concretely as nonabelian BPS monopoles of minimum charge allowed in Dirac quantization.

Monopoles and Holography

We present a holographic theory in AdS_4 whose zero temperature ground state develops a crystal structure, spontaneously breaking translational symmetry. The crystal is induced by a background magnetic field, but requires no chemical potential. This lattice arises from the existence of 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole solitons in the bulk which condense to form a classical object known as a monopole wall. In the infra-red, the magnetic field is screened and there is an emergent SU(2) global symmetry.

On The Problem of the Quantum Heterotic Vortex

We address the problem of non-Abelian super-QCD, with a Fayet-Iliopoulos term, as seen from the vortex worldsheet perspective. Together with the FI term $ξ$, also a mass $μ$ for the adjoint superfield $Φ$ enters in the game. This mass allows the interpolation between $\N=2$ and $\N=1$ super-QCD. While the phenomenology of the $\N=2$ case ($μ=0$) is pretty much understood, much remains to be clarified for the finite-$μ$ case. We distinguish, inside the parameter space spanned by the FI term and the mass $μ$, four different corners where some quantitative statements can be made. These are the regions where the strong dynamics can, in some approximation, be quantitatively analyzed. We focus in particular on two questions: 1) Is the quantum vortex BPS or non-BPS? 2) What is the phase of the internal non-Abelian moduli? We find that the answer to these questions strongly depends upon the choice of the linear term in the superpotential. We also try to explain what happens in the most unexplored, and controversial, region of parameters, that of the quantum heterotic vortex, where $Λ\ll \sqrtξ \ll μ$.

A Coincidence Problem: How to Flow from N=2 SQCD to N=1 SQCD

We discuss, and propose a solution for, a still unresolved problem regarding the breaking from $\N=2$ super-QCD to $\N=1$ super-QCD. A mass term $W=μ\Tr Φ^2 / 2$ for the adjoint field, which classically does the required breaking perfectly, quantum mechanically leads to a relevant operator that, in the infrared, makes the theory flow away from pure $\N=1$ SQCD. To avoid this problem, we first need to extend the theory from $\SU (n_c)$ to $\U (n_c)$. We then look for the quantum generalization of the condition $W^{\prime}(m)=0$, that is, the coincidence between a root of the derivative of the superpotential $W(ϕ)$ and the mass $m$ of the quarks. There are $2n_c -n_f$ of such points in the moduli space. We suggest that with an opportune choice of superpotential, that selects one of these coincidence vacua in the moduli space, it is possible to flow from $\N=2$ SQCD to $\N=1$ SQCD. Various arguments support this claim. In particular, we shall determine the exact location in the moduli space of these coincidence vacua and the precise factorization of the SW curve.

A Note on Chern-Simons Solitons - a type III vortex from the wall vortex

We study some properties of topological Chern-Simons vortices in 2 + 1 dimensions. As has already been understood in the past, in the large magnetic flux limit, they are well described by a Chern-Simons domain wall, which has been compactified on a circle with the symmetric phase inside and the asymmetric phase on the outside. Our goal is two-fold. First we want to explore how the tension depends on the magnetic flux discretized by the integer n. The BPS case is already known, but not much has been explored about the non-BPS potentials. A generic renormalizable potential has two dimensionless parameters that can be varied. Variation of only one of them lead to a type I and type II vortex, very similar to the Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen (ANO) case. Variation of both the parameters leads to a much richer structure. In particular we have found a new type of vortex, which is type I-like for small flux and then turns type II-like for larger flux. We could tentatively denote it a type III vortex. This results in a stable vortex with number of fluxes which can be greater than one. Our second objective is to study the Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory and and understand how the large n limit of the CS vortex is smoothly connected with the large n limit of the ANO vortex.

Domain Walls and Flux Tubes

We present a new vortex solution made of a domain wall compactified into a cylinder and stabilized by the magnetic flux within. When the thickness of the wall is much less than the radius of the vortex some precise results can be obtained, such as the tension spectrum and profile functions. This vortex can naturally end on the wall that has created it, making the simplest junction between a wall and a vortex. We then classify every kind of junction between a flux tube and domain wall. The criteria for classification are as follows: a flux can or can not end on the wall, and when it ends, the flux must go somewhere. Various examples are discussed, including abelian and non-ablelian theories, as well as supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric theories.

Light Nonabelian Monopoles and Generalized r-Vacua in Supersymmetric Gauge Theories

We study a class of N=1 supersymmetric U(N) gauge theories and find that there exist vacua in which the low-energy magnetic effective gauge group contains multiple nonabelian factors, \prod_i SU(r_i), supported by light monopoles carrying the associated nonabelian charges. These nontrivially generalize the physics of the so-called r-vacua found in softly broken N=2 supersymmetric SU(N) QCD, with an effective low-energy gauge group SU(r) \times U(1)^{N-r}. The matching between classical and quantum (r_{1}, r_{2},...) vacua gives an interesting hint about the nonabelian duality.

Monopoles Can be Confined by 0, 1 or 2 Vortices

There are three types of monopole in gauge theories with fundamental matter and N=2 supersymmetry broken by a superpotential. There are unconfined 0-monopoles and also 1 and 2-monopoles confined respectively by one or two vortices transforming under distinct components of the unbroken gauge group. If a Fayet-Iliopoulos term is added then there are only 2-monopoles. Monopoles transform in the bifundamental representation of two components of the unbroken gauge symmetry, and if two monopoles share a component they may form a boundstate. Selection rules for this process are found, for example vortex number is preserved modulo 2. We find the tensions of the vortices, which are in general distinct, and also the conditions under which vortices are mutually BPS. Results are derived in field theory and also in MQCD, and in quiver theories a T-dual picture may be used in which monopoles are classified by quiver diagrams with two colors of vertices.

The Holomorphic Tension of Nonabelian Vortices

We continue the work hep-th/0411075 considering here the case of degenerate masses. A nonabelian vortex arises in r-vacua upon the breaking by a superpotential for the adjoint field. We find the BPS tension in the strong coupling regime computing the dual-quark condensate. Then we find that it is equal to a simple quantity in the chiral ring of the theory and so we conjecture the validity of our result out of the strong coupling regime. Our result gives an interesting hint about the duality r <--> N_f-r, seeing it as the exchange first <--> second sheet of N=1 Riemann surface.

preprint2005arXiv

The Holomorphic Tension of Vortices

We study the tension of vortices in N=2 SQCD broken to N=1 by a superpotential W(Φ), in color-flavor locked vacua. The tension can be written as T = T_{BPS} + T_{non BPS}. The BPS tension is equal to 4π|\T| where we call \T the holomorphic tension. This is directly related to the central charge of the supersymmetry algebra. Using the tools of the Cachazo-Douglas-Seiberg-Witten solution we compute the holomorphic tension as a holomorphic function of the couplings, the mass and the dynamical scale: \T = \sqrt{W'^2+f}. A first approximation is given using the generalized Konishi anomaly in the semiclassical limit. The full quantum corrections are computed in the strong coupling regime using the factorization equations that relate the N=2 curve to the N=1 curve. Finally we study the limit in which the non-BPS contribution can be neglected because small with respect to the BPS one. In the case of linear superpotential the non-BPS contribution vanishes exactly and the holomorphic tension gets no quantum corrections.

The Liouville Geometry of N=2 Instantons and the Moduli of Punctured Spheres

We study the instanton contributions of N=2 supersymmetric gauge theory and propose that the instanton moduli space is mapped to the moduli space of punctured spheres. Due to the recursive structure of the boundary in the Deligne-Knudsen-Mumford stable compactification, this leads to a new recursion relation for the instanton coefficients, which is bilinear. Instanton contributions are expressed as integrals on M_{0,n} in the framework of the Liouville F-models. This also suggests considering instanton contributions as a kind of Hurwitz numbers and also provides a prediction on the asymptotic form of the Gromov-Witten invariants. We also interpret this map in terms of the geometric engineering approach to the gauge theory, namely the topological A-model, as well as in the noncritical string theory framework. We speculate on the extension to nontrivial gravitational background and its relation to the uniformization program. Finally we point out an intriguing analogy with the self-dual YM equations for the gravitational version of SU(2) where surprisingly the same Hauptmodule of the SW solution appears.

Nonabelian Superconductors: Vortices and Confinement in ${\cal N}=2$ SQCD

We study nonabelian vortices (flux tubes) in SU(N) gauge theories, which are responsible for the confinement of (nonabelian) magnetic monopoles. In particular a detailed analysis is given of ${\cal N}=2$ SQCD with gauge group SU(3) deformed by a small adjoint chiral multiplet mass. Tuning the bare quark masses (which we take to be large) to a common value $m$, we consider a particular vacuum of this theory in which an SU(2) subgroup of the gauge group remains unbroken. We consider $5 \ge N_f \ge 4$ flavors so that the SU(2) sub-sector remains non asymptotically free: the vortices carrying nonabelian fluxes may be reliably studied in a semi-classical regime. We show that the vortices indeed acquire exact zero modes which generate global rotations of the flux in an $SU(2)_{C+F}$ group. We study an effective world-sheet theory of these orientational zero modes which reduces to an ${\cal N}=2$ O(3) sigma model in (1+1) dimensions. Mirror symmetry then teaches us that the dual SU(2) group is not dynamically broken.
