Action complexity in the presence of defects and boundaries

The holographic complexity of formation for the AdS$_3$ $2$-sided Randall-Sundrum model and the AdS$_3$/BCFT$_2$ models is logarithmically divergent according to the volume conjecture, while it is finite using the action proposal. One might be tempted to conclude that the UV divergences of the volume and action conjectures are always different for defects and boundaries in two-dimensional conformal field theories. We show that this is not the case. In fact, in Janus AdS$_3$ we find that both volume and action proposals provide the same kind of logarithmic divergences.

Shape Deformations of Charged Rényi Entropies from Holography

Charged and symmetry-resolved Rényi entropies are entanglement measures quantifying the degree of entanglement within different charge sectors of a theory with a conserved global charge. We use holography to determine the dependence of charged Rényi entropies on small shape deformations away from a spherical or planar entangling surface in general dimensions. This dependence is completely characterized by a single coefficient appearing in the two point function of the displacement operator associated with the Rényi defect. We extract this coefficient using its relation to the one point function of the stress tensor in the presence of a deformed entangling surface. This is mapped to a holographic calculation in the background of a deformed charged black hole with hyperbolic horizon. We obtain numerical solutions for different values of the chemical potential and replica number $n$ in various spacetime dimensions, as well as analytic expressions for small chemical potential near $n=1$. When the Rényi defect becomes supersymmetric, we demonstrate a conjectured relation between the two point function of the displacement operator and the conformal weight of the twist operator.

Spin Matrix Theory in near $\frac{1}{8}$-BPS corners of $\mathcal{N} = 4$ super-Yang-Mills

We consider limits of $\mathcal{N} = 4$ super-Yang-Mills (SYM) theory that approach BPS bounds. These limits result in non-relativistic theories that describe the effective dynamics near the BPS bounds and upon quantization are known as Spin Matrix Theories. The near-BPS theories can be obtained by reducing $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM on a three-sphere and integrating out the fields that become non-dynamical in the limits. In previous works we have considered various SU(1,1) and SU(1,2) types of subsectors in this limit. In the current work, we will construct the remaining Spin Matrix Theories defined near the $\frac{1}{8}$-BPS subsectors, which include the PSU(1,1|2) and SU(2|3) cases. We derive the Hamiltonians by applying the spherical reduction algorithm and show that they match with the spin chain result, coming from the loop corrections to the dilatation operator. In the PSU(1,1|2) case, we prove the positivity of the spectrum by constructing cubic supercharges using the enhanced PSU$(1|1)^2$ symmetry and show that they close to the interacting Hamiltonian. We finally analyse the symmetry structure of the sectors in view of an interpretation of the interactions in terms of fundamental blocks.

Developments in non-relativistic field theory and complexity

This thesis focuses on two research areas: non-relativistic field theories and complexity. In the first part we review the general classification of the trace anomaly for 2+1 dimensional field theories coupled to a Newton-Cartan background and we apply the heat kernel method to compute the trace anomaly for specific theories. We find a relation with the conformal anomaly of the 3+1 dimensional relativistic counterpart which suggests the existence of a non-relativistic version of the a-theorem. We consider a model realizing a $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric extension of the Bargmann group in 2+1 dimensions with non-vanishing superpotential, obtained by null reduction of a relativistic Wess-Zumino model. We check that the superpotential is protected against quantum corrections as in the relativistic parent theory, thus finding a non-relativistic version of the non-renormalization theorem. We find evidence that the theory is one-loop exact, due to the causal structure of the non-relativistic propagator together with mass conservation. In the second part of the thesis we review the holographic conjectures proposed by Susskind to describe the time-evolution of the Einstein-Rosen bridge in gravity: the complexity=volume and complexity=action. We investigate both the volume and the action for black holes living in warped $\mathrm{AdS}_3$ spacetime. There exist extensions of the proposals when the dual state from the field theory side is mixed; we then analytically compute the subregion action complexity for a general segment on the boundary in the BTZ black hole background, finding that it is equal to the sum of a linearly divergent term proportional to the size of the subregion and of a term proportional to the entanglement entropy. We also find that mutual holographic complexity carries a different content compared to mutual information. This means that entropy is not enough!

On subregion action complexity in AdS$_3$ and in the BTZ black hole

We analytically compute subsystem action complexity for a segment in the BTZ black hole background up to the finite term, and we find that it is equal to the sum of a linearly divergent term proportional to the size of the subregion and of a term proportional to the entanglement entropy. This elegant structure does not survive to more complicated geometries: in the case of a two segments subregion in AdS$_3$, complexity has additional finite contributions. We give analytic results for the mutual action complexity of a two segments subregion.

On Newton-Cartan local renormalization group and anomalies

Weyl consistency conditions are a powerful tool to study the irreversibility properties of the renormalization group. We apply this formalism to non-relativistic theories in 2 spatial dimensions with boost invariance and dynamical exponent z=2. Different possibilities are explored, depending on the structure of the gravitational background used as a source for the energy-momentum tensor.

On Newton-Cartan trace anomalies

We classify the trace anomaly for parity-invariant non-relativistic Schrödinger theories in 2+1 dimensions coupled to background Newton-Cartan gravity. The general anomaly structure looks very different from the one in the z=2 Lifshitz theories. The type A content of the anomaly is remarkably identical to that of the relativistic 3+1 dimensional case, suggesting the conjecture that an a-theorem should exist also in the Newton-Cartan context. Erratum: due to an overcounting of the number of linearly-independent terms in the basis, the type A anomaly disappears if Frobenius condition is imposed. See appended erratum for details. This crucial mistake was pointed out to us in arXiv:1601.06795.
