Shape Deformations of Charged Rényi Entropies from Holography

Charged and symmetry-resolved Rényi entropies are entanglement measures quantifying the degree of entanglement within different charge sectors of a theory with a conserved global charge. We use holography to determine the dependence of charged Rényi entropies on small shape deformations away from a spherical or planar entangling surface in general dimensions. This dependence is completely characterized by a single coefficient appearing in the two point function of the displacement operator associated with the Rényi defect. We extract this coefficient using its relation to the one point function of the stress tensor in the presence of a deformed entangling surface. This is mapped to a holographic calculation in the background of a deformed charged black hole with hyperbolic horizon. We obtain numerical solutions for different values of the chemical potential and replica number $n$ in various spacetime dimensions, as well as analytic expressions for small chemical potential near $n=1$. When the Rényi defect becomes supersymmetric, we demonstrate a conjectured relation between the two point function of the displacement operator and the conformal weight of the twist operator.

Holographic Complexity and de Sitter Space

We compute the length of spacelike geodesics anchored at opposite sides of certain double-sided flow geometries in two dimensions. These geometries are asymptotically anti-de Sitter but they admit either a de Sitter or a black hole event horizon in the interior. While in the geometries with black hole horizons, the geodesic length always exhibit linear growth at late times, in the flow geometries with de Sitter horizons, geodesics with finite length only exist for short times of the order of the inverse temperature and they do not exhibit linear growth. We comment on the implications of these results towards understanding the holographic proposal for quantum complexity and the holographic nature of the de Sitter horizon.

Constructing AdS_2 flow geometries

We consider two-dimensional geometries flowing away from an asymptotically AdS$_2$ spacetime. Macroscopically, flow geometries and their thermodynamic properties are studied from the perspective of dilaton-gravity models. We present a precise map constructing the fixed background metric from the boundary two-point function of a nearly massless matter field. We analyse constraints on flow geometries, viewed as solutions of dimensionally reduced theories, stemming from energy conditions. Microscopically, we construct computationally tractable RG flows in SYK-type models at vanishing and non-vanishing temperature. For certain regimes of parameter space, the flow geometry holographically encoding the microscopic RG flow is argued to interpolate between two (near) AdS$_2$ spacetimes. The coupling between matter fields and the dilaton in the putative bulk is also discussed. We speculate on microscopic flows interpolating between an asymptotically AdS$_2$ spacetime and a portion of a dS$_2$ world.

De Sitter Horizons & Holographic Liquids

We explore asymptotically AdS$_2$ solutions of a particular two-dimensional dilaton-gravity theory. In the deep interior, these solutions flow to the cosmological horizon of dS$_2$. We calculate various matter perturbations at the linearised and non-linear level. We consider both Euclidean and Lorentzian perturbations. The results can be used to characterise the features of a putative dual quantum mechanics. The chaotic nature of the de Sitter horizon is assessed through the soft mode action at the AdS$_2$ boundary, as well as the behaviour of shockwave type solutions.

Traversable wormholes in AdS and bounds on information transfer

We analyze the amount of information that can be sent through the traversable wormholes of Gao, Jafferis, and Wall. Although we find that the wormhole is open for a proper time shorter than the Planck time, the transmission of a signal through the wormhole can sometimes remain within the semiclassical regime. For black holes with horizons of order the AdS radius, information cannot be reliably sent through the wormhole. However, black holes with horizon radius much larger than the AdS radius do allow for the transmission of a number of quanta of order the horizon area in AdS units. More information can be sent through the wormhole by increasing the number of light fields contributing to the negative energy. Our bulk computations agree with a boundary analysis based on quantum teleportation.

Smooth and fast versus instantaneous quenches in quantum field theory

We examine in detail the relationship between smooth fast quantum quenches, characterized by a time scale $δt$, and {\em instantaneous quenches}, within the framework of exactly solvable mass quenches in free scalar field theory. Our earlier studies \cite{dgm1,dgm2} highlighted that the two protocols remain distinct in the limit $δt \rightarrow 0$ because of the relation of the quench rate to the UV cut-off, i.e., $1/δt\llΛ$ always holds in the fast smooth quenches while $1/δt\simΛ$ for instantaneous quenches. Here we study UV finite quantities like correlators at finite spatial distances and the excess energy produced above the final ground state energy. We show that at late times and large distances (compared to the quench time scale) the smooth quench correlator approaches that for the instantaneous quench. At early times, we find that for small spatial separation and small $δt$, the correlator scales universally with $δt$, exactly as in the scaling of renormalized one point functions found in earlier work. At larger separation, the dependence on $δt$ drops out. The excess energy density is finite (for finite $mδt$) and scales in a universal fashion for all $d$. However, the scaling behaviour produces a divergent result in the limit $mδt \rightarrow 0$ for $d\ge4$, just as in an instantaneous quench, where it is UV divergent for $d \geq 4$. We argue that similar results hold for arbitrary interacting theories: the excess energy density produced is expected to diverge for scaling dimensions $Δ> d/2$.
